[Frameworks] Antimatter [media art] Online Programs
Fellow Frameworkers, As some of you know, the Antimatter [media art] festival is happening right now through Oct 25 with both in-person screenings and online programs. Nightly screening programs are available on our website the next day for 24 hours where it says "Watch Online." There are also some fantastic little intro/profile/Q type videos from participating filmmakers to check out at "Automat" in the same section. http://antimatter.ca Enjoy! ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
[Frameworks] Antimatter Festival 2020 — Final Deadline July 11
Fellow Frameworkers, The final (extended) submission deadline for the 2020 Antimatter [Media Art] festival is coming up on July 11. We are planning for a real-life, non-virtual event to include physical screenings, installations and performances as we have for two decades. With restrictions on international travel we may add some online components as well. The situation here is currently quite good, with much reopening already including our own gallery (Deluge Contemporary Art) where we have a media installation running and are welcoming visitors eager to see art beyond their personal screens. Submissions are accepted through FilmFreeway or directly, with entry guidelines and form available on our website. https://filmfreeway.com/AntimatterMediaArt http://antimatter.ca Best, Todd Eacrett Victoria BC Canada ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Weird. The two I have are slightly different, but both are tethered to the case in the same way. With the screws removed is the mechanism loose within the case or still solidly attached? I'm not a camera technician so I don't recommend prying with a screwdriver, but it has worked for me. On Tue, May 26, 2020, at 3:43 PM, Morgan Hoyle-Combs wrote: > > Already tried it. Re: [Frameworks] Looking for camera repair
In addition to the three screws on the back of the case, you need to remove the shutter release knob and the footage counter (top of the case). The latter has a spring washer under it, so don't lose it. The mechanism should slide/wiggle out as one unit, but if the case is bent or dented it could hang up on the edges. You can clean and lube easily without further disassembly; I think I basically soaked the entire mech in solvent. Re: [Frameworks] Have old 35mm b + w ?
Hi Caryn, I have some old 35mm x-ray film, probably around 400'. Very slow, and orthochromatic, so you can work with it under a red safelight. It has certainly not been stored properly. Might be challenging to get it across the border without it being x-rayed (and don't even know how much that would affect it). The Clipper is supposed to start sailing again in June, so could conceivably send it to Seattle that way. Re: [Frameworks] speaking of Bleu Shut...
There was a 165° fisheye lens (Pacific Optical 3.45mm) for gun or cockpit cameras that produced a circular image like that and would jibe with the military surplus origin. One of the samples I have (and some others I’ve seen) has a small hole/divot dead centre in the front element. Definitely factory-drilled, and I’m guessing to provide a reference or alignment mark on the footage. Curator Emeritus Steve Seid thought it was a lab effect but I'm curious if any of you know how it was made, what the effect is called, and if you know of any other films that use it. Hi Carl, Here's a link to some photos of the loader: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/uxtk8fn768753yr/kO5KwtzU6NkKQkw2YwM3a?dl=0 Not sure if I've set it up correctly, or there aren't parts missing, but it works. I'm sure you could rig something up with rewinds and a rod to guide the film in at the right angle. Looking at the tanks, I think one of them originally had the centre tube but it's been removed and the hole brazed up with a metal patch. They sat in the original owner's basement since the 70s, when he did light shows and film loops for psychedelic bands. Re: [Frameworks] Eyemo camera repair
Jon, Steve's Cine Service in Vancouver if he (Steve Bereczky) is still in business. He's been repairing and modifying Eyemos for years. Why do you think it's the spring? Does it keep winding with the spring never getting tighter? Or does it seem fully wound but won't release? Former would be the spring, latter might be a spring washer clutch thingy that's sheared off. (I think it's designed to do that to protect the mechanism if it jams.) Disassembling an Eyemo is not that difficult; I've fixed a couple using an old military repair manual that I found online. If the spring is not broken there's no need to touch it and it stays securely in the body when you remove the mechanism. Parts are pretty hard to find, but if it is the spring washer, Filmos used the same one. It's been a couple years since I tore one apart, but I'm happy to help if I can. Hi Adam, I've been using one of the iSkysoft products. There are a couple for mac, Video Converter and Media Converter, which work with yosemite. These are commercial, but affordable, $40 to $60 or something like that, and will convert pretty much anything, with flexible settings and good results. They also capture/download streaming video from websites. One, if not both, will rip DVDs directly to a .mov -- but not ProRes, so you'd still need to do that with Quicktime. Re: [Frameworks] eyemo lens adapter
Technically it's possible -- Eyemo flange to focal distance is 1.5" and Nikon is 46.5mm -- but it would have to slide internally into the Eyemo mount, and most Nikon lenses have a shroud around the rear element (and preset levers) that will get in the way. An aside: when Nikon introduced their SLR system, they made the FFD longer than competitors' so buyers couldn't use other lenses on Nikons, but they could use Nikkors on any other camera. Brilliant engineering/marketing. Jeff's suggestion of a Nikon extension tube for a mount works well. I had a machinist turn a sleeve to fit into the tube and over the Eyemo mount (which was ground down in length and turned smooth on the exterior surface, removing the locking knob ridge). The new "mount" friction-fits over the old one and is secured with three grub screws so focus can be fine-tuned. Re: [Frameworks] HD cam 24 vs 25? vs DCP?
From a presentation perspective, I'd nix both of the rapidly obsolescing HDCam and Blu-ray in favour of a ProRes file. Blu-ray is a pita for screenings. I've had discs that tested fine one day then wouldn't read the next. Even with a BR data drive and the software it's a slow and potentially lossy process to rip it back to a file. If you're sending out a physical object (hard-drive/memory stick) with files on it, consider including multiple versions with different resolutions and/or bitrates. When I have the time to re-encode a file I'm pretty careful, but if I have to do so an hour before a screening, not so much. You don't mention the running time, but a file that can be up//downloaded is theoretically cheaper/faster than shipping a tape or disc. At least it pushes the economic and environmental costs of the server farms onto the next generation.Cheers,Todd EacrettVictoria BC CanadaOn Thu, 12 Dec 2013 21:33:07 -0800 (PST), ev petrol epetr...@yahoo.com wrote:thanks loads folks for all the feedback!!this is a project that originated on super-8mm (18fps)I did a 4K scan then imported into avid as DNxHD 175X MXF (the highest resolution I could get to play back on my laptop)did all the conforming (stabilize, resize, timewarp, colour timing) exported same as source (avid DNxHD 1920x1080 / 24fps) I have to make a digibeta the DVDs (= what the funders asked for)would it make sense to make a HD ProRes file a Blu-Ray disc, instead of the HD cam, for screening purposes? ProRes is the best, it's full 4:4:4 color sampling and can optionally preserve RGB color space if you're working with graphics. HDCam-SR is a preferable tape master (but expensive to read from because only big labs have the players). A ProRes file is definitely more useful to work with, though a physical tape master is reassuring to have. 24PFS is the most compatible framerate for film original and HD projection including DCP. If you then make a downconverted SD version on beta or as an SD file then 25fps is the standard for that version. Watch out for DCP - this is an encoded file package like a DVD and certainly not a master element. It cannot be accessed or copied. It cannot even be read from in real time - it has to be ingested into the server. It is only useful for screenings in cinemas that are equipped. You are right to worry about servers and platforms - some DCPs don't play on all systems. But DCP has become the Hollywood standard to replace release prints. It is handy to have available for potential screenings an HD ProRes file, a Blu-Ray disc, and/or a DCP, an SD file, a beta, a DVD... But for preservation, archiving and future compatibility, the best master now is a 2K file, either in DPX or ProRes 4:4:4 or as tiff images. Down the road you will be able to convert that into anything you will need and you could even make a 35mm negative from it, which is the best solution of course. -Pip At 16:28 -0800 12/12/13, David Tetzlaff wrote: I'd recommend getting your film transferred to the highest quality codec available, then converting it to whatever you need on your own (or a friend's) computer (if you don't have a Mac). You'll want your film outputted to a file on a hard-drive regardless, not to any form of tape. If the transfer service can't do that, f**k 'em, and find someone who can. Assuming you have access to a Mac, I'd recommend ProRes 4:4:4. Not that you'd ever send it out in that, but as a 'best-quality' master. I assume DCP would be better (??) but I don't know of any software you could use to downconvert it. If it's shot at 24fps, get it transferred at 24fps. If you need to send it out to PAL-land, they might have 24fps capability... And if they don't, you can do the 24-25 conversion yourself in software. That way you have the option of doing a 1frame=1frame conversion so every frame remains intact but it just runs a little faster, or you can do a transfer that
Re: [Frameworks] Looping Super 8
There were Technicolor Super 8 projectors which have a reloadable endless loop cartridge. Just slots into the projector like an 8-Track. I've seen them used by a couple of different filmmakers for installations and expanded cinema performances. The projectors are not terribly bright (150 watt, maybe?), and the cartridges can jam, but having the film enclosed keeps it a lot cleaner than a loop running around the room on rollers. We had an installation at Antimatter a couple years ago by Kyle Whitehead that used two of these (highly modifed) projectors and it ran relatively trouble-free for the 10 days. Alex MacKenzie had a performance some years back using three of them and a multitude of cartridges loaded with his own rephotographed and hand-processed loops.Cheers,Todd EacrettVictoria, BC, CanadaOn Mon, 22 Apr 2013 12:15:15 +0100, Imogen Pring i.pr...@hotmail.com wrote:Hi there,I was wondering if anyone could help me or advise me on how to show Super 8 film. Re: [Frameworks] eiki xenon sound question
The sound drum should not move laterally at all. If it's moving in and out that much it's probably not a bent spindle or worn bushings. More likely when it was fixed someone left out a spacer or the compression spring that keeps it all tight (curved spring steel piece between the flywheel and bolt on the other end of the sound drum spindle -- or maybe they put it on backwards?). You might be able to find a manual at film-tech.com. I'm just working from memory, but can take a look tomorrow and confirm how the sound drum assembly should go together. Cheers, Todd Eacrett Victoria BC Canada Hey folk, I was haphazardly trained on an Eiki ex 6120 (being only experienced with smaller projectors). The sound on it was recently fixed, and it's probably the first time it's actually being used for optical in many a moon. However, it has a number of issues, most notably a warble, and I'm trying to narrow the exact issue. (And I can't seem to find a manual online.) One thing I noticed is that the optical sound roller seems to roll outwards as the film progresses; I uploaded images with the roller in and out right here Out: http://imgur.com/hZPhz In: http://imgur.com/KVMmR I presume this is the main issue, but let me presume ignorance here and ask you folk. Re: [Frameworks] Anti-static film cleaner recs
For a looper you need something fast drying. These days that means either an isopropanol or perchloroethylene base. I've used the Edwal version of the latter to clean footage on a looper and it worked well: you can see the cleaner evaporate before it winds into the take-up. Perch is dry-cleaning fluid, so if you know a dry-cleaner, you could score some on the cheap and dissolve a bit of paraffin in it to lubricate the film. Kodak used to suggest pure isopropyl with paraffin as a cleaner/lubricant... Hi all, Any recommendations for anti-static film cleaner? I'm running some continuous loops and the film-tech website seems to say that filmguard can't be used with endless platter loops. Thanks!
