Issues with FlowCleaner on a spam server.
Hi my friends I have a big issue that I still cannot track what is causing that my server stop working. I have a spam gateway running: spamassassin clamavis amavis apache+mailgraph postfix bacula client apcupsd client My server is running freebsd 8.0-p2 AMD64. Raid-1. My server can work for a month, each weekend I update the ports and upgrade my packages, spamd rules every month are updated. No issue here, suddenly after a month or 4-5 weeks the server stop working, amavisd stop doing the job, I can access the server via ssh and see the issue. This is the 4th time that happens. My IDLE goes to 50%, when I start debugging I see a process called FlowCleaner eating 1 CPU. Always got the PID 20, looks like a internal process, I have been searching info about this process but not to much info. I cannot kill this process, I can restart clamd, spamd, apache, bacula, but amavisd is stuck. If I send a shutdown -r now won't work, my server just hang-up, if I press the power button won't work to. I have to do a cold reboot, I don't have other choice. I have read logs but don't see any issue (maillog, console, all, message). One thing to mention, is that every time this happen, my server fan's are working more faster that usual, the first day I detect this I create a batch that send every 5 minutes the core temperature using freebsd coretemp.ko module. Avg. I got 40'c for each core: dev.cpu.0.temperature: 42.0C dev.cpu.1.temperature: 41.0C I search around on Intel site and this chip max temp. is 70'c, I had never seen this number on my emails, the biggest number had been 54'c and this appear before my server got crazy yesterday: dev.cpu.0.temperature: 53.0C dev.cpu.1.temperature: 49.0C Something is causing this, a spam attack, memory leak mmm I had not seen my server use the whole 4GB ever. My friends, what do u you recommend to me to track this? I have test dovecot+postfix and I can send emails with that jail. Now I want to setup my spam gateway, is another jail called jail-B, I have setup nss_ldap+pam_ldap to contact my PDC(jail-A) and is working: id user1 uid=10002(user1) gid=513(Domain Users) groups=513(Domain Users) id test uid=10003(test) gid=513(Domain Users) groups=513(Domain Users) Now, the part is the one is not working is postfix+ policyd-weight. Went I test with other machine in the network using telnet, for some reason once postfix accept the mail wants to send the email to the outside not internally. I have setup transport to send the email jail-A but I don't see any task doing this, check: Apr 8 07:02:01 filtro postfix/qmgr[6723]: 97002BB47C2: from=t...@x.org , size=409, nrcpt=1 (queue active) Apr 8 07:02:04 filtro postfix/smtpd[6727]: connect from filtro.X.org [192.168.49.7] Apr 8 07:02:31 filtro postfix/smtp[6725]: connect to X.org[X.Y.Z.W]:25: Operation timed out Apr 8 07:02:31 filtro postfix/smtp[6725]: 97002BB47C2: to=us...@x.org , relay=none, delay=869, delays=839/0.03/30/0, dsn=4.4.1, status=deferred (connect to X.org[X.Y.Z.W]:25: Operation timed out) You say that X.org should be delivered locally. Mail that's permitted by permit_mynetworks or submitted via the sendmail(1) interface won't trigger the policy server in your config. Thanks Noel for your quick answer, just would like to inform u that this is a spam server not a email server, once this server accept the email, he need to send it to the real mail server, is other machine in the network(other jail). This is why I'm using the transport stuff, if exist a more secure way please let me know, spam server + email server exist in the same network(jails). The test was made with telnet, about the sendmail, I don't know went I setup something about sendmail, I just have been working with postfix. Re: Shrink a Slice? FreeBSD 7.1
Thanks for your great info, the only problem is that I don't want to cause any trouble to my current system and I needed to fix this quickly. I already install the system and everything is working, I have to built a system and test your procedure step by step. This info u give to us is very important, I had done this with Linux before, and is easy, but with FreeBSD is the first time I need to do this. I will let u know my results ASAP. Thanks again for your help Jerry. On Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 2:23 PM, Jerry McAllister jerr...@msu.edu wrote: On Thu, Feb 05, 2009 at 12:19:13PM -0800, perikillo wrote: Hi people. MicroSloth usage of the terms is different and confuses people sometimes. As far as I know neither growfs(8) nor tunefs(8) can shrink the disk allocated to a partition. The only way is to dump each of the filesystems to some other reliable media (maybe tape or a large USB disk) and then repartition that slice to be the sizes you want.Use dump(8) to make the dumps and then check the dump files out before starting the repartitioning. First you have to build a filesystem on the USB drive. You should be able to use bsdlabel to create a single partition that covers the whole drive. But, if your FreeBSD or BIOS is old enough it might not go that big, so you will need to break it down in to smaller slices and make a partition in each. (I have had to do that. But if it is 7.xx it should not be necessary) To break it up, get the gparted utility. Download its boot image and use it to break up the USB disk in to slices that your FreeBSD will handle. You need to have it make all what it calls (in the MS way) Primary Partitions, but those are what are called slices in FreeBSD land. Don't get tempted to use gparted to shrink your ad0s1 slice because it will not work right. That will just trash the current partitions. It is not what you are looking for. Either if your FreeBSD will handle the whole USB or after you have it broken up, then build a partition on each slice of the USB using bsdlabel. Don't make it bootable or write a boot sector on it. Then run newfs(8) on it to make a filesystem. This bsdlabel and newfs can be done while the system is running. Then, take the system down and run the dumps. You can do the dumps from single user mode or boot a fixit image from the install CD. You will need to do the repartitioning and restore the dumps from the fixit anyway so you could just start there. Boot the machine from the fixit disk - create a 'holographic' image as they call it. Fixit is usually on disc1. Run the dumps. Lets say you are doing the dumps to a USB drive that comes up as /dev/da0 in the fixit boot and your current disk still is comes up with the name /dev/ad0 . First, make up mount points for all your filesystems that you want to dump plus for the filesystem[s] on the USB drive. NOTE: That the fixit runs from a memory resident filesystem so whatever you create there will disappear on boot. Anyway, skip dumping /tmp and /dev is a pretend filesystem. mkdir /oldroot mkdir /oldusr mkdir /oldvar mkdir /oldbkup mkdir /usbdrive (You can actually make the dumps from the devices rather than mounting them, but I have never gotten in to that habit) Mount those partitions mount /dev/ad0s1a /oldroot mount /dev/ad0s1d /oldusr mount /dev/ad0s1e /oldvar mount /dev/ad0s1g /oldbkup mount /dev/da0s1 /usbdrive(This device name might be different depending on how you make it. Some possibilities are: /dev/da0s1If you just newfs the slice without making a partition in it /dev/da0s1a If you make a slice with fdisk and a partition with bsdlabel /dev/da0aIf you make a partition with bsdlabel without making a slice Now do the dumps dump 0af /usbdrive/rootdump /oldroot dump 0af /usbdrive/usrdump /oldusr dump 0af /usbdrive/vardump /oldvar dump 0af /usbdrive/bkupdump /oldbkup This will take a while depending on media you use. By the way, to tape it would go to /dev/nsa0 rather than /usbdrive/oldroot, etc Once the dumps are done, you may want to reboot and mount that USB drive or read the tape and look at the dumps to make sure they can be read

This could not be the sync of the server and my files, because the last time I try to sync my servers this was the same error I got today. More recently I needed to incorporate spamd which defaults to PF so I used that. However, now I am back to needing traffic shaping again. I suspect trying to use both PF and IPFW simultaneously will not be a good approach. In addition, there now are instructions for using spamd with IPFW so it appears that either PF or IPFW will do what I need. Is there any additional information available to assist in selecting between those? Thanks. As I understand it pf is often found to be easiest to use and has lots of features like altq and os fingerprinting but is quite a bit slower than ipfw. -- Bruce ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reading this post, i have some doubt, how is IPFW support for VoIP packets, can do traffic shaping?, i read that PF can do that, I'm right? FreeBSD + PHP + Barcode scanners for Web Application?
Hi people. Look we have some applications at work, that use scanners Manufacture by Symbol. Those applications were created in Access, but i want to create those app for a Web browser, my doubt is: Does someone here has a app running from the browser that use bar code scanners? Which languages did u use, python, php, other? Did u have problems with fonts? Does some know something about this? I still didn't see any app that runs in the browser that use bar code scanners, hope someone here give some light. This web app will be for FreeBSD 6.2 server, but i want to use the most used browsers like Firefox or Iexplorer but i don't want to depend just from Microsoft Windows + Office in my clients, i will like to use a browser on any OS to run my app. Thanks all for your time, greetings!!! ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A lot of barcode scanners work by generating keycodes (either connected via an adaptor to the PS/2 connector, or USB) so they should work in anything really... the one we have at work certainly will just write into Notepad or whatever has keyboard focus when you hit the scanner's Go button. Im home right now, here i have one NIC Intel (fxp driver) with 2 ports on it, this is my firewall machine but tomorrow i will take to my work, i dont have access top my server right now , but i will give you the info you request ASAP. I have another Linksys NIC, some posts say that those 2 NIC's on freebsd are really good. Another thing that i will do, i dont know if it works, disable the drivers form the kernel and just use the modules and see what hapend :-? But i need to see first how my backups finish, and will let you you now guys. Thanks for your time. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Or you could pass all traffic from a FreeBSD box in order to know what's going on. something like this central-switch--FBSD--router-1=router-2 [LAN] [-WAN-] No i dont administer those routers, i need to check if the problem is our network or the ISP link, and yes is Point To Point link and talk with the guys that setup that router, but im thinking in put a freebsd box between our lan and the router and sniff all the traffic and see whats is happening but wich port to use...? ntop can show how much bandwidth is used by whom There are many available and I'm not sure ntop is the best choice. There is pfSense which is a FreeBSD based live-CD for router-like installations. pfSense has ntop package. it won't hurt trying it out. , thanks all for your help. Ethereal is for read packets but can he check wich one device is causing problems..? device causing problems? Do you mean computer using a lot of bandwidth? You can check this with ntop(and a thousand others I guess, use google) Well to find how is causing my loss of packets, iam using ntop right now and ethereal, i try to find out who is causing the lost of packets, any recomendations...? This statement ifconfig_rl0=inet 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 is forceing that ip addr to be used and its wrong. you have to get ip assigned by your isp. Follow this example. Which means you can use ipnat or ppp nat. start of ppp.conf ### default: set log Phase tun #use to avoid excessive log sizes set timeout 0 # no idle time out, will not disconnect dialisp: set device PPPoE:XXX # replace xxx with your NIC device name set authname YOURLOGINNAME# Replace with your ISP account username set authkey YOURPASSWORD # Replace with your ISP account password add default HISADDR # Add a (sticky) default route (Mandatory) enable dns # Gets the ISP's DNS IP address places them # in resolv.conf for reference by FBSD box. ### End of ppp.conf # Replace the XXX in the [set device PPPoE:XXX] statement with the NIC's FBSD interface name. Sometimes it will be necessary to use a service tag to establish your connection depending on how your ISP and/or the phone company has its DSL network configured. Service tags are used to distinguish between different PPPoE servers attached to a given network. You should have been given any required service tag information in the documentation provided by your ISP. If you cannot locate it there, ask your ISP's tech support personnel. This is the format of the command with the service tag added: set device PPPoE::service_tag(in your case = rl0) The is the FBSD interface name used by PPPoE. The interface must be UP (IE: enabled). It is only used as a transport, and does not need to be assigned an IP address. This can be done automatically at boot time by updating the /etc/rc.conf file. The format of the statement to add is ifconfig_=up where is the NIC's FBSD interface name used by PPPoE that you specified in the /etc/ppp/ppp.conf file. ee /etc/rc.conf # add following statements ifconfig_=up# (in your case = rl0) ifconfig_tun0=DHCP# get your ISP assigned IP address To setup user ppp to dial your ISP automatically at FBSD boot time, you have to add the following statements to the rc.conf file. I was reading the ppp man page, it says that the default value for MTU and MRU is 1500 bytes, but like i show you, i cannot send more than 1464+8, them i setup both values to 1472 on /etc/ppp/ppp.conf set MTU=1472 set MRU=1472 My conclusion is correct Vladimir...? I have one ISP that give 512Kbps service, they give to me one modem SpeedStream, i setup everything, before this service was running on freebsd 4.11-p16(i think ...?), them change all to freebsd 5.4-p8. I dont know if this problem is from my ISP or is Freebsd, i dont have a clue where to find the problem to fix this, with freebsd 4.11 i have this problems to. This is my /etc/rc.conf for ppp # User ppp configuration. ppp_enable=YES# Start user-ppp (or NO). ppp_mode=ddial# Choice of auto, ddial, direct or dedica ppp_nat=NO# Use PPP's internal network address translation or NO. ppp_profile=prodigy # Which profile to use from /etc/ppp/ppp.conf. ppp_user=root # Which user to run ppp as I was thinking to create a script that check every 5 minutes the link and do something to re-connect, but i dont think is the right solution. freebsd 5.4 and ipnat startup problem...?
Hi people. I was using freebsd 4.11 like gateway with ipfilter enable and ipnat. It was working very good, but after some years start giving me problems, it was the time to try with 5.4, them i made a fresh freebsd 5.4 installation. Them i update my source and made the buildworld process and now i have running freebsd 5.4-p7. I read the handbook to see if something change in the ipfilter section but dont see to much different. I change my kernel file to enable ipfilter plus another secure options, normally on my firewalls i dont install any X stuff only the necesary stuff to run my firewalls. Setup my /etc/rc.conf to enable ipfilter+ipnat+ipmon+gateway. My connection is PPPoE, them i copy those files: ppp.conf + ppp.linkup from my old machine to my new system and made the changes, normally the NIC option. Copy my ipfilter rules and ipnat rules from my old system to my new system, them made the neccesary changes on ipfilter.rules because ipnat.rules dont need to. I have on the new system one NIC Intel dual port 82558 Pro/100 Ethernet driver fxp, my PPPoE is conected to fxp1 and my gateway is fxp0(192.168.0.1). Test and after some little changes, i was having my new firewall + nat system to serve my local machines. I test my windows systems and it was working, but i found some messages on the startup process: ioctl(SIOCIPFL6): invalid argument Read some ipfilter maillist post and Darren Red say that if we enable IP6 on the kernel this message disappear, i ask my self, with do i need that option if only run one simply network with only one firewall and 2 clients IPv4...? Ok, i enable IP6 on the kernel and the message disappear, good. Them i found this message: filter sync'd twice why...? and ipnat wasnt translating anything to my clients, i can run: #ipnat -l And show me the list filter rules, i can ping my local machines from freebsd and from windows, i can ping internet adreess, like yahoo or freebsd from my firewall but windows cannot, if i ping with my firewall outsite address and them run ipnat -l, dosent show any active sessions...? i think only ipfilter is working but not ipnat...? Right now i need to manually run ipnat every time i use my firewall, i have been searching about, but dont see any solution yet!!! Another message appear on my startup process: su: NSSWITCH(nss_method_lookup): nis, passwd_compat, endpwent, not found I found with apropos nsswitch.conf, i still dont know about nis to much, i dont have nothing enable on my rc.conf file about nis, but i really need this option...? Them someone knows how to fix the ipnat problem? and is good to enable NIS...? Thanks all for your time. Re: securing FreeBSD
On 7/13/05, Greg Barniskis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hi guys I would like to secure my FreeBSD server. I don't want anyone to be able to access to the disk using a bootable CD (or by setting the actual hdd to secondary and plug an other primary hdd). I just don't want anyone to be able to hack this box nor any password. Do you have a solution? Securing a platform against a determined attacker who can put their hands on the physical hardware is a significant challenge for any OS. To protect against the type of attack you describe, encrypting all disk content (or at least the sensitive parts) is probably the only effective thing you can do, short of sealing the whole thing inside some other physically protected environment. http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/disks-encrypting.html Short of that, you could use a case with a trigger mechanism that informs the BIOS that the case has been opened, so that a warning is emitted at boot time re: physical security has been violated. Of course, that doesn't prevent intrusion, it just tells you that it occurred (and then, only if the intruder doesn't also violate your BIOS security and simply reset the case has been opened bits). -- Greg Barniskis, Computer Systems Integrator South Central Library System (SCLS) Library Interchange Network (LINK) gregb at scls.lib.wi.us, (608) 266-6348 ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Plus, use google: +hardening freebsd. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Xorg 6.8.2 Big Problems....
MY KEYBOARD DOSENT RESPOND Hi i have almost 1 month trying to run xorg, the problem is my keyboard, went i run test#startx X window system start, my mouse is working, but my keyboard dosent respond to anything. If i test the xorg config: test# Xorg -config xorg.conf.new The black and grey grid and an X mouse cursor appear, if i press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace my keyboard respond and send me back to my shell. Now, i have been testing with freebsd 5.3 and 5.4 release, i see that on both release we have xorg 6.8.2, and they are using the new driver kbd, i see that we have the choice to use the old driver keyboard, i change my x.org config file and the driver, but the same results no answer from my keyboard. Another thing, went i test my keyboard pressing different keys, went i kill my session with the mouse option Kill, i found all the time strange characters on my shell, example this are from today in the morning test: xauth: (argv):1: bad display name devhora:0 in remove command ^_^^ Ÿ9 ^_ž ^YŸ¹^^™9ž¦^\+^^:ºœ«ž ^\¹œ^NŽ^NŽ^]8^NŽ^NŽ^\œ^NŽ^\œ^NŽ^O^R œ^NŽ:º^O^R œ^NŽ:º:^O^R œ^NŽ:º:º^A;¼»à57EൕGÅÇNÎKOËÏà^\RSàœÓÒàMàPàKàÐàÍàËàOàQàSàÑàÏFàRÆàÒàÓ^[^Zloa d: 0.66 cmd: csh 479 [running] 0.15u 0.04s 0% 1944k ¹•!/load: 0.66 cmd: csh 479 [running] 0.15u 0.04s 0% 1944k ¯¡ 9¹ ¸devhora# devhora is the name of my computer. My xorg.conf files have been made with this two options: test# Xorg -config xorg.conf.new and test# xorgconfig But no results with any of both options. I read my X log on /var/log/X.org.0.log but any errors appear. I have another system running freebsd 5.2.1-Release and the X system is working very well, on this system my keyboard is working, i see that here the xorg version is 6.8.2 and the xorg is not using the new driver kbd, we still using the old driver keyboard. Them, i was thinking that maybe my keyboard was the problem but went i test with 5.2.1 i see that is not, i think the new drivers is the problem. I have my xorg files, log, dmesg, if someone could help me how to fix this i will apreciate, i dont know if someone else has this problem right now with xorg 6.8.2, someone from this list say to me that after he change his system to 5 stable, his keyboard start to work, but, i am going to try to see if i can find the problem, iam not a guru but i can read the files. Thanks all for your time, i hope we can fix this little problem, if not i will test with 5 stable i send the results. I dont want this mail to be to long i only going to put my Xorg log from /var/log/, i someone need more information just ask for it, and i with pleasure send the info. greetings.
