[Audyssey] flight simulator?

2007-10-31 Thread Timberwolf
Hi,

With all the emails, I didn't really get a chance to check them all, being gone
for quite a while, but what I picked up was that flight simulator was being
talked of quite a bit; does anyone have any idea where I could get it, and FS
navigator, and is it free?

E-mail me privately if this is off-topic.

thanks-
Tyler

Re: [Audyssey] Shoot Da Me Release!!

2007-10-31 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Ryan,
I have just downloaded and played Beta 1. I have a few suggestions if
you don't mind me giving you some. If you want to here my suggestions
read on. If not ignore this email and go on.
I like your basic story idea of the cop fighting the gang members.
Though, somehow shooting down a copter with a pistil doesn't seam all
that realistic. One possible idea is to have gang members walking
towards you from the left, right, and center and you shoot them and they
die. The second alternative is give the cop a much heavier weapon like a
shotgun, antiaircraft weapon, etc. In either case some environmental
ambience like wind etc would be nice.
If you have need of any sounds I have loads of them in the USA Games
sound library, and I would be willing to give you a few to get your game
project off to a good start.

The Voice. Well, I have gotten much better at programming. I had this
idea in a dream, that you would hit either left, right, or down arrow
for left, right or middle sounds. It is called Shoot Da Me and is
ready for public beta (Stable). Here is a quick list of features right
now for Public Beta 1:

° Main Menu
° 20 Levels, gets faster each level
° Unlimited Support
° Using DirectInput 8
° Score and Health
° Sapi and Sounds
All of my beta testers have not gone up to level 20, only 12. It is
very challenging. The game will be available tonight at 11:59 PM EST,
technically October 31, 2007 or Halloween. The game is at
www.rsgames.co.nr, we had to move again, 789mb is having problems, but
everything is under control. Please, from now on, only use
www.rsgames.co.nr. On that site, you may download Shoot Da Me Public
Beta 1 (Stable) tonight. It is stable, and it really fun, unlike GSV.
I highly recommend you try it, several people cannot wait for it. It
will be in .ZIP or .RAR, on SendSpace, YouSentIt and My Computer. If
you want more information on the server for my computer, please go to
www.rsgames.co.nr and find the link about the Server. This is only
Public Beta and includes all features above, so have fun.

Features in the Future:
° Score Posting
° Trophies
° Unlockables
° Mini and Bonus Games
° Difficulty Levels
° Dialog (Enemy Interaction)

Thank You and I hope you finally enjoy an RS Games Game!

Re: [Audyssey] monty question

2007-10-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tom,

Quote
Thomas do you know how the original game worked, manual
swords or automatic when you got close to the monster? I was never able
to play the original Monty that well so I don't recall. That is one
reason this Monty is so exciting for me.
End quote

To the best of my memory the swords were used automatically. The reason
was because the fire button was reserved for jumping, and items like
torches, swords, etc were used automatically because of the fact there
weren't enough buttons available for manual use of those items.

Quote
At the risk of being somewhat
of a purist I'd argue for keeping it like the original unless this truly
complicates the game from a programming, not from a playing standpoint.
End quote

As an Atari purist myself I have to agree. Though, from a programming
standpoint I just commented out the automatic code for swords and
converted it over to manual attack. I have found by doing so the manual
attack works much smoother and error free compared to the automatic use
of swords without altering the difficulty of the game much. So I think
manual attack using swords will stay just because this seams to be more
stable in the long run.
As a result by converting the swords over to manual rather than
automatic the ability to kill a monster when landing on them no longer
works. This is ok since the original game didn't support that anyway. In
the classic game if you landed on a monster sword or not you were toast.
So I think this is a bit of a trade off of total classic feel and a
little modern changes for easier programming and use.

Re: [Audyssey] Jim's NFL Football.

2007-10-31 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Ryan,

I will try to add that as well. But for now I think that it is standard that
you add 17 yards to the line of scrimmage when figuring the distance of a field
goal. That is that the holder sets up 7 yards back and the goal post is at the
back of the end zone which is 10 yards deep.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: [Audyssey] what about a kwiditch game

2007-10-31 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi nicol,

I will think about it, but I really don't think that I will be doing a kwiditch
game. I think that games like Baseball, Football, bowling etc are turn based
games. But in games like Soccer, Basketball and Hockey all of the players are
constantly in motion. In a game of kwiditch it would be even more so since it
would be 3d. I just don't know how to represent and control all of the players.

Re: [Audyssey] flight simulator?

2007-10-31 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi. This is not off topic. However, the simulator is not free. The
unfortunate thing is that finding it is difficult unless you can find
someone who is selling their copy. Recently there has been discussions
on this list concerning distributing the simulator on the Internet. The
excuse was that since it's no longer sold, then it was ok to do so. In
fact, since it's not freeware or in the public domain, this is not legal
and any illegal discussions on list are not permitted.

So in short, talking about the simulator is on topic, but talking about
how to get it illegally is off topic.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tyler,
Flight Symulator 2002 and FS Navigator are not free. Do to the fact
Flight Symulator 2002, the most accessible version, isn't being sold any
more you can probably find a copy at Ebay, a yard sale, or some other
place that sells old and used software.
As for the FS Navigator add on for FS 2002 and FS 2004 you can purchase
it from
http://www.fsnavigator.com
for $45.00 US.

You've got a choice of either downloading a zip version or a Ra version,
from either Sendspace or Yousendit.

I got the Ra version from Sendspace and it was fine.

Go to the shoot da me download page, and then, if you haven't got 7zip,

Find the file on that page (it'll be called shoot Da me public beta 1 zip),

Re: [Audyssey] what about a kwiditch game

2007-10-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Yeah, that is a tuff call. The game of qwiditch is not only 3D but there
are the various balls to think of as well. I don't think it can easily
be represented in turn based play like football and you can't control
everyone in real time.
The only way that a kwiditch game could be made that would be at all
realistic is put the player as the team captain and then the other six
players of the team would have to be AI bots.

Jim Kitchen wrote:
 Hi nicol,

I will think about it, but I really don't think that I will be doing a
kwiditch game. I think that games like Baseball, Football, bowling etc are
turn based games. But in games like Soccer, Basketball and Hockey all of the
players are constantly in motion. In a game of kwiditch it would be even
more so since it would be 3d. I just don't know how to represent and control
 all of the players.

Hello Audyssey,
I am Ryan of RS Games. You may know me as the *poor* creator of Guess
The Voice. Well, I have gotten much better at programming. I had this
idea in a dream, that you would hit either left, right, or down arrow
for left, right or middle sounds. It is called Shoot Da Me and is ready
for public beta (Stable). Here is a quick list of features right now for
Public Beta 1:
° Main Menu
° 20 Levels, gets faster each level
° Unlimited Support
° Using DirectInput 8
° Score and Health
° Sapi and Sounds
All of my beta testers have not gone up to level 20, only 12. It is very
challenging.
highly recommend you try it, several people cannot wait for it. It will
be in .ZIP or .RAR, on SendSpace, YouSentIt and My Computer. If you want
more information on the server for my computer, please go to
www.rsgames.co.nr and find the link about the Server. This is only
Public Beta and includes all features above, so have fun.
Features in the Future:
° Score Posting
° Trophies
° Unlockables
° Mini and Bonus Games
° Difficulty Levels
° Dialog (Enemy Interaction)

Thank You and I hope you finally enjoy an RS Games Game!

Your Fellow Gamer,
Ryan Smith
/RS Games Tip of the Day: RS Games Games use the default voice set for
Sapi. Change that in the control panel. /

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 - was: new directx 9

2007-10-31 Thread Davy Kager
Something to ask yourself is what the reason is why you would want to have a
newer version of the runtime libraries. If you don't run into any bugs, why
should you upgrade anyway?
Another thing to think about is that the current XAudio2-version is just a
beta that expires somewhere in the beginning of 2008 (according to the
August '07 SDK). It's still rather buggy and such. And I suppose there will
be a certain way to keep on using 2D sound, since not everybody wants a 3D
soundcard. I myself am going to buy a pro-quality soundcard somewhere next
month, but it'll just be a nice stereo card, since I don't like 3D and don't
have the speakers for it. I just hope that DirectX 10 will keep on knowing
what DirectSound is...

Hi Shaun,
The problem here is that based on what I have read over the last couple
of days Microsoft will no longer be upgrading Managed DirectX. Auggest
2007 is the last version of Managed DirectX available for development.
November's Managed DirectX runtime libraries are exactly the same as
Auggest 2007. The November SDK has removed the Managed DirectX
development from the package which means USA Games is stuck with Auggest
2007 DirectX or is forced to convert to XNA.
At the moment converting Monty to XNA is not an option.I am to close to
release to rewrite the games Audio, Input, and storage engine.

shaun everiss wrote:

Everyone should use ie7 aparently but there are still updates for ie6

Guess what? Think I will keep it for a bit but I will go foreward at
 some point.

Re: [Audyssey] flight simulator?

2007-10-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I'd like to add to what Raul said. While we both understand the
difficulties in obtaining Flight Simulator 2002 we won't support illegal
distribution of the product. The last two listers that tried that were
removed from this list until such time as they have changed their minds
about piracy on list. Neither of us like taking list privileges away
from listers, but neither will we stand idle as someone steels and
illegally distributes software.
So any discussion about Flight Sym as far as this list is concerned
should be about actual play, how to get it legally, but no illegal
activity will be allowed.
Smile

Raul A. Gallegos wrote:

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2

2007-10-31 Thread Davy Kager
I follow the SDK's documentation of August '07, and that still deals with
IDirectSound8, so I use it. This suits my needs and is compatible with all
the operating systems that I'd like to support. Furthermore, I've never been
up-to-date, i.e. I absolutely don't like .NET and thus I don't use it.
For XAudio2, that might be a tricky point, but I'm sure it'll be possible to
find a good alternative for the panning functions in DirectSound. The
wrapper function will in that case convert any pan-value to a suitable 3D
position.

Hi Davy,
Well, I understand what you are trying to do, but there are some major
changes/differences between DirectSound and XAudio you might want to be
aware of before blindly creating allot of wrappers that require allot of
reworking in the future. To my knoledge XAudio doesn't offer a simple
stereo pan control and uses full 3D positional buffers in games.
Another consideration you might want to take note of is that
IDirectSound8 has been depricated for a long time. You should be using
the DirectX 9.0C com components. As of November 2007 IDirectSound8 no
longer ships with the SDK and distribution package.
Cheers.

Davy Kager wrote:
 Hi,

What I'm trying to build is an engine that has wrapper functions for all
 the
DirectSound functions. So a CreateBuffer() function and a SetPan()
 function
instead of using the methods from the IDirectSound8 interface. In that
 way,
if I wish to switch to XAudio2, I just have to change these wrappers and
 the
whole engine and any potential game sourcecode will still work fine.
Oh, just a quick note, I was talking about the COM-part of DirectX
 there...

 Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] what about a dialogue game

2007-10-31 Thread nicol
Well it can't be difficult to program such a game.
All right, maybe you have a point but this is just me.
I personally would love a game where I can fill in interesting dialogues and
be timed on it.
For instance can anyone tell me whereelse in windows do you get hot key
field controls except for the one everybody knows where you set an
application launch keystroke?
I would just love a timed game where I can have large dialogues to
workthrough.
If it's a ridiculous idea, well that's just me.

I would think this to be a learning tool rather than a game. Also, if the
program, however it is labelled, rushes you, it would frustrate new computer
and screen reader users rather than help them learn.

Subject: [Audyssey] what about a dialogue game

 Hi all
Here is a game I would like to play. I'm fond of navigating in windows
 dialogues.
I would like a game where you have to fill in information in a dialogue.
The game should work like this: the dialogue must be a standard windows
dialogue for which you use your screen reader, but then a voice tells you
what to fill in and its timed.
Say for instance you've got a huge dialogue to fill in, now the first
control is an edit box, now the voice tells you to type in something in
 the
 edit box.
Next you get some checkboxes, the voice tells you which ones must be
unchecked and which ones should be checked.
The ones that you have to uncheck is checked and those you have to check
 is
 unchecked.
Next you get a set of radio buttons, actually 4 sets of radio buttons, the
voice tells you to select an option from each one.
Next you get a multi line edit box, the voice narrates a story which you
must type into this multi line edit box.
Next is a button which will open adialogue inside this dialogue.
And in those are a lot of controls including those outlook calendar
 controls.
Of course if you don't tab to the apply button in this dialogue before
 you
activate the button the voice instructs you to activate, the game is
 over.
If you take a wild guess and hit alt+a and alt+a in that dialogue
 represents
another button, the game is also of course over. And don't be mistaken,
 you
will also need to press hot keys in this dialogue game, you will get hot
 key
fields such as those you get when you define a shortcut key to launch a
program. The voice will simply say a key combination and you must press
 it,
sometimes you will get weird combinations such as shift+
 windows+insert+alt+control+numpad period.
Of course the game is also over if you press escape per accident which
 will
of course cancel the dialogue like any standard dialogue. And this is
 timed,
the voice keeps on telling you what you have to fill in or check, so if
 you
are behind you have to remember what the voice said.
If the voice read the last control's state or info, it gives you a few
seconds to find the ok button and hit enter on it.
The less time you complete the game in, the hier your score.
I feel the blind community needs such a game, it will help the beginner
 with
computers in a fun way to learn to work with dialogues and it will also
 sharpen everybody's typing.

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2

2007-10-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Davy,
Fair enough. Yes, I agree XAudio 2 is definately not ready for the prime
time. The DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 com components should still have a
long shelf life on them seeing as the Auggest 2007 SDK is still current.
A developer can always offer that runtime on his or her web site as I
do until there is a major need to convert the games code base over to
XAudio, XInput, etc...
Also do to finances etc the blind computer market generally runs far
behind the industry standards and commercial markets anyway which
extends how long a DirectX 8 based engine will last.
A large majority of blind games are written in VB 6 with DirectX 8, and
while it is far behind industry standards I look for the games to last
quite a bit longer since the market has pretty much settled on the
Windows XP platform for most of the users out there.

Davy Kager wrote:
I follow the SDK's documentation of August '07, and that still deals with
IDirectSound8, so I use it. This suits my needs and is compatible with all
the operating systems that I'd like to support. Furthermore, I've never been
 up-to-date, i.e. I absolutely don't like .NET and thus I don't use it.
For XAudio2, that might be a tricky point, but I'm sure it'll be possible to
find a good alternative for the panning functions in DirectSound. The
wrapper function will in that case convert any pan-value to a suitable 3D
 position.

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 - was: new directx 9

2007-10-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Davy,

Quote
Something to ask yourself is what the reason is why you would want to have a
newer version of the runtime libraries. If you don't run into any bugs, why
should you upgrade anyway?
End quote

that is a very good question. I don't have an answer for that one. The
only reasons I would say is if the developer is planning to upgrade to
newer development tools or if they are preparing to support some
upgrades in the operating systems that are coming down the road.

Quote
Another thing to think about is that the current XAudio2-version is just a
beta that expires somewhere in the beginning of 2008 (according to the
August '07 SDK). It's still rather buggy and such.
End quote

that is a major reason I am not all that eager to switch my game engine
from MDX to XNA. XNA is only at 1.0, 2. is in testing, and I'm not ready
to switch over to something that is still very much being tested and
isn't necessarily established as a solution.

Quote
 And I suppose there will
be a certain way to keep on using 2D sound, since not everybody wants a 3D
soundcard.
End quote

Sure all you have to do in XAudio is pass a 0 value to the y axis and
only the x and z axis will get positioned. This esentually cansels out
the 3D effect and turns it into 2D audio. However, it will still have
the same hardware limitations and restrictions as a 3D game.
It is no big deal, but just less desirable.

Quote
I just hope that DirectX 10 will keep on knowing
what DirectSound is...
End quote

Well, tridition with Microsoft is to keep the last versions com
components in the instalation for backwards compatibility with older
programs. So DirectX 10 will have whatever it has and the DirectX 9.0C
com components will ship to keep compatibility with DirectX 9 based game
titles. At least that is the plan as best I know it.

Hi Charles,
Yes. If you are using this dialog based program as a learning tool
putting a timer on it would not help but hinder the person using it to
learn. Also you'd have to use it with your screen reader to get use to
the screen reader, because slapping Sapi in there to speak the fields
etc would not provide for any screen reader training at all.

Hi Nicol,
No, probably not very difficult, but probably just uninteresting for
most game developers. For me I know programming stuff like dialogs,
menus, etc is pretty boring as it gets. What I am interested in is
working on is stuff like the AI characters, building the levels, etc.
Doing basic stuff like menus and hot keys is the boring glue that holds
the program together.

If it's a ridiculous idea, well that's just me.

Hi Nicol,
What you described to me sounds more like a training program than a
game. Honestly, I don't see many gamers being all that interested in
that kind of game concept.
I know for me I really like games with involved story lines, puzzles,
strategies, and a game involving day to day dialog windows would not be
my cup of tea. I couldn't personally get interested in playing a game
like that let alone writing one.

[Audyssey] games in general

2007-10-31 Thread shaun everiss
Hi.
A side note to this fs thing is that I had a lucky break finding
silent steel in nz.
I got it for 20 bucks but well sometimes you need to be in the right
place at the right time.
At 12:59 a.m. 1/11/2007, you wrote:

[Audyssey] Shoot Da Me Information and Bugs Info

2007-10-31 Thread Ryan Smith
Hey,
I am very happy to see that people are playing this game, and most
enjoying it. At the last second, it was decided that I change the timers
interval to 3000. Since no beta tester has gotten up to 19, this bug was
not spotted. The entire game has the same commands, left, right or down
arrow. Nothing changes at level 19 except the speed. I will relook and
fix the bug, I believe it may be the timer interval, or some typo in the
program. Daniel or Blindguy as we know him, asked me what does unlimited
support means. It means, you can email the rsgames email as many times
as you need. Nicol asked if it were better than SuperShot. I am not
trying to compete with SuperShot, however, in the end, I expect more
features than SuperShot has. Like I said, I am not trying to rip L-Works
off, SuperShot was discontinued, and is/was never my intention to
compete with any developer. Claudio asked me if I could make it easier.
It is so hard, because of the speed. A bug, however, somehow does make
it harder, because it disables or somehow interferes with DirectInput 8.
And, to Thomas Ward, I will use you suggestions, thank you for them. I
hope to have a patch out! Keep Shooting those Copters!!

Hello,

Being the poor creator of GSV, a game like Nicol suggested would not be
too difficult. If no other developer wishes to program that, I may do
it. But, if someone else does want to program it, please do.

 Hi,
I found something pretty cool while browsing the
 rec.games.roguelike.announce newsgroup.

It's a role-playing game similar to games like Nethack and ADOM but based
on the Castlevania gameworld. In adition to the features commonly found in
such games there is also sound and music!

Bundled in the game download are MIDI arrangments of various tunes from
the Castlevania series that are used throughout the game as well ass very
decent sound effects. It's all very atmospheric and original.

The game features a good story and several game modes such as a prologue,
a prelude and a training mode in a dition to the main story mode.

The game requires a Java engine and has both a graphical and a text-based
interface. The text (console) mode worke dwell for me in Linux, so I
suppose it would work pretty well with Windows screen readers too.

Now, this is what I'd call a real Halloween treat! :-)

 Happy gaming,
 Tobias

Go check it out at www.santiagoz.com. The download link will take you to a
blog site, but one of the entries near the top holds the actual download
 link.

I've gotten the message windows cannot open this file and all that.

2007-10-31 Thread Tobias Vinteus
Hi,
This game requires a Java installation. You can grab one from
www.java.com. The game itself is a .jar-file, but to start it you can use
the .bat-files found in the game folder. For those who don't know,
.bat-files are a sort of script-files that were common in the DOS
operating system and that can be used in Windows too. They are simple text
files containing commands in the command line environment.

The game itself is a roguelike game, meaning it's similar to Rogue, an
ancient predecessor to Nethack.

Monsters, items and geography in the gameworld are represented by
characters onn the screen. In modern roguelike games the characters are
often replaced by graphical tiles. I don't know if i.e. Jaws can be used
to label these tiles, but what I do know is that this particular game
(CastlevaniaRL) has a console mode, which in plain English means a text
mode.

I've found it to work in the Linux text console. Given that Nethack and
similar games seem to work with Jaws, I thought it might be possible even
for this game to work with Windows screen readers.

HTH,
Tobias

Re: [Audyssey] cvrl game

2007-10-31 Thread Tobias Vinteus
Hi,
This game case sensitive, in other words it differs between normal and
capital letters. Thus a capital T should get the music turned off.

(Personally I think the music is really cool, but that's me. S*smile*)

There is also a text file called cvrl.cfg that contains game options.
Almost at the very top of that file are some options to control the sound
and music. Try replacing the word true with the word false on the
line starting with EnableMusic = .
