As someone who went blind later in life I totally agree. it is very hard to
try and learn all there is with screenreaders, braille displays. even more
so because to us who had to deal with all this new stuff later in life is
like learning to read and write all over.
there are also a lot of sighted people who are not that knowledgeable about
computers or technical stuff in general.
so be patient with the ones just learning. if a mail seems annoying just try
and ignore it and move on to the next one.
i got helped on here and other lists many times and appreciate everyone
that did help, even if it was a question asked for the umpteenth time. if
new inexperienced folks get flamed than that might discourage them from
playing great audiogames altogether and that would be a shame.

Hello Shadow Dragon,
While I certainly understand your position, your frustration, etc I think
it is better in the long run if we try to help Anthony rather than
attacking him.
In my conversations with Anthony on and off list I discovered we are
dealing with someone who isn't a very skilled computer user to begin with.
Just a few days ago Anthony had a problem selecting items using the combo
box on the audiogames.net web site. After talking with him off list I
discovered he wasn't aware he needed to press enter on the combo box to
get Window Eyes to disable MSAA/forms mode so he can use the combo box on
a web page. To some that sounds like a very stupid mistake, some might
think of Anthony as an idiot, but he simply has not had the same level of
training that some of us had. Therefore we have to walk him through this
not assuming anything, taking anything for granted, and when giving
instructions give him detailed instructions to him as a totally new user
to the computer.
Let's put it this way. If you knew someone recently whent blind, gave
him/her a new computer with a screen reader on it, would you expect him or
her to know how to use the screen reader, browse the web, install games,
whatever the first day? Probably not. I know I certainly didn't learn all
I know over night. I did however work hard to learn all I could about
computers, and years later I am very skilled at using them.

Shadow Dragon wrote:
Most games give system requirements, and installation instructions, and
a lot is covered on just about every audiogames page thanks in part to
dark, richard and a few others. Had you just taken the time to explore
the audiogames website and read some game documentation instead of
trying things for about 2 seconds, giving up and acting like a victim
like you're doing now, you probably would have been in business long
ago. I can understand that not everyone is a computer jenius, and odds
are I don't have too many friends here due in part to a fiasco on my
part a while back, but I don't like to see others blamed for one
person's falts. So take it easy, quit playing the role of a victim and
you'll get a lot farther in what you try to do. Appologies to the mods
 for borderline flaming.

Having said that there are a lot of online games and offline text games
such as world of legends that can be played without framework and other
such things, as well as very basic games like tournament and probably a
few others. Usually the truly good ones have some requirements attached
 to them though.

The trouble is, that to many people just assume that x person can use a
given thing. Anybodies knowledge of a given thing is as only as good as
the experience and training that they have had with it. There's tons of
stuff that I don't know about. And probably won't. that's just life. We
all have to learn and help those who need it.

I've found especially as I've written my own guides and manuals for
certain things, that a lot of manuals, and this is generic, not aimed at
anybody or anything, but they tend to assume that the end user will have
some knowledge of what ever it is they are trying to use. I had to learn
to go right back to scratch, and write the review and manual that I did,
from the perspective of someone who had never even herd of the product I
was writing about let alone used it.

Especially when it comes to computers, the fobias that people have is
because of attitudes like, oh you should know this or that. Which can be
expressed directly like as we've seen on this list, or in the writing of
the varius manuals for x product out there. And this really is half the
problem. Doesn't matter whethr you're blind or what ever. Any product is
only as good as the manual that comes with it. If the documentation
isn't written to a high standard, by that I mean to such a degree that
anybody can read and understand it within reason, then quite honestly,
people are going to pay money for x product and never gain the full
benefit from it. Which to be honest is a waste of an investment.

I agree. Manuals for audiogames are pretty good. But manuals for other
products - some of them have such complicated words I get tung tied in the
first few minutes of reading it or if its being read to me.
It also doesn't help that so many games require this, and another game
required that, then another program doesn't like that being installed so it
has to be replaced...etc.

I didn't get into audiogames until around 2006 myself, and it sure has been
a long road.

I agree. Manuals for audiogames are pretty good. But manuals for other
products - some of them have such complicated words I get tung tied in
the
first few minutes of reading it or if its being read to me.
It also doesn't help that so many games require this, and another game
required that, then another program doesn't like that being installed so
it
has to be replaced...etc.

I didn't get into audiogames until around 2006 myself, and it sure has
been
a long road.

The trouble is, that to many people just assume that x person can use
a given thing. Anybodies knowledge of a given thing is as only as good

as the experience and training that they have had with it. There's
tons of stuff that I don't know about. And probably won't. that's just

life. We all have to learn and help those who need it.

I've found especially as I've written my own guides and manuals for
certain things, that a lot of manuals, and this is generic, not aimed
at anybody or anything, but they tend to assume that the end user will

have some knowledge of what ever it is they are trying to use. I had
to learn to go right back to scratch, and write the review and manual
that I did, from the perspective of someone who had never even herd of

the product I was writing about let alone used it.

Especially when it comes to computers, the fobias that people have is
because of attitudes like, oh you should know this or that. Which can
be expressed directly like as we've seen on this list, or in the
writing of the varius manuals for x product out there. And this really

is half the problem. Doesn't matter whethr you're blind or what ever.
Any product is only as good as the manual that comes with it. If the
documentation isn't written to a high standard, by that I mean to such

a degree that anybody can read and understand it within reason, then
quite honestly, people are going to pay money for x product and never
gain the full benefit from it. Which to be honest is a waste of an
 investment.

As someone who went blind later in life I totally agree. it is very
hard to try and learn all there is with screenreaders, braille

so because to us who had to deal with all this new stuff later in life
 is
like learning to read and write all over.
there are also a lot of sighted people who are not that knowledgeable
 about
computers or technical stuff in general.
so be patient with the ones just learning. if a mail seems annoying
just
 try
and ignore it and move on to the next one.
i got helped on here and other lists many times and appreciate

 if
new inexperienced folks get flamed than that might discourage them

Re: [Audyssey] Training and tutorials was: I give!!!!

2009-03-29 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
In my personal case I didn't need a lot of training or tootorials
either. I guess I was just wired for understanding computers from an
early age. I first used a computer around 1986, the legendary Apple
A-2E, and went from there. I was usually able to figure out most things
by experimenting with the computer and seeing what I could do with it.
That desire to play with it, make the computer do what I want, lead to
my interest in programming.
Anyway, the only document that comes close to what Anthony and others
like him might find useful is Personal Power by Michael Feir. Having
read it I think it is a great introduction to basic accessible computing
and what is out there for us as a blind computer user. Most people
haven't a clue what they can do with a computer, and what is out there
for them.

Smile.

dark wrote:
 Hi Tom.

Interested to read what you said about training sinse to be perfectly
honest I never had any, I just worked things out as different things
involving computers came up which I wanted to do.

It started with brousing a Cd rom for the DD 2nd edd rules when I was
finishing secondary school, sinse up until that point I'd only ever
used ms word and my documents.

Then, when I got to uni, I started on outlook express and using the net,
and I oh a lot of debt to the Hal version 5.1 manual for letting me
know about basic concepts like list boxes, buttons, page refresh etc.

In my second year in 2003, I discovered legend of the green dragon and a
couple of other online games, as well as using winamp to play various
formats of music and in my third year (in 2004), I discovered
interactive fiction and mucked about downloading, installing and playing
 those.

It wasn't really until 2006 that I started on audiogames, which also got
me into the habbit of installing programs and components and such,
not to mention finding out the background information about said
programs by asking on forums, reading on the net, and having chats with
some of my computer science studdying friends.

the point of all this, is I wonder if it would be worth having a basic
tutorial on audiogames.net, --- or another site, detailing some of the
essentials of computer knolidge necessary to play audiogames, to answer
the qu3estions of people like Antony, and indeed myself three years
 ago.

 just a thought.

 Beware the Grue!

 Dark.

trying to explain is what to do in these, that you don't played yet. it's
not saying i'll give up the others worked, why this one don't
works? that will solve the problem.
now let me explain what you have to do in this game to play.
well, these numbers like 1: new game 2: load game
are what you will have to press in the keyboard, in order to execute the
function that you wants.
in this case, for example, you whould press the number 1, then press
enter.
and then the next menus will appear, and it's just press your choice and
continues.
in this one, you don't have to click in the options.
see if it works and if you have more problems, just say that i'll try to

Re: [Audyssey] don't get it

2009-03-29 Thread Kai

Greetings Anthony.

The World of Legends uses a traditional DOS-style interface, reminiscent of
older computer systems that accepted commands via a command line, not
through the mouse.

This means that, when presented with a menu system or a place to make any
kind of response, you do not click on the item you want on screen, but
rather type in its corresponding value.

In your case, for example, you would type in the digit zero, then hit enter
to exit the game, press 1 and then enter if you want a new game, etc.

Well they use seech but not your screen reader. Some use soud files that
were recorded specifically for the game while others use the Microsoft SAPI
Text-to-speech engine which most computers have istalled. Granted the
installed voices aren't necessarily the best but they're a start if you
can't afford to buy better ones.

You have acquired the skill of Weaponry Therimin.

Re: [Audyssey] Got it!!!!

2009-03-29 Thread dark

Hi Tony.

yes, World of legends is indeed a text game. assuming I did not make a
mistake when writing up it's entry on audiogames.net, when reading the
description, just before you get to the description of the game it should
say features text

For most games, it will say either features sound or features sound,
text
many other games which people have recommended to you are indeed full audio
games which do not use text, such as those from
http://www.gmagames.com/ and http://www.pcsgames.net/

The only bad news of course, is that on a dile up connection, the more audio
a game features, the longer it will take you to download.

Yep, you'd probably like Tank Commander and Loan wolf too - though not
adventure, they're action packed, though they cost money.

Also the mysteries of the ancients from
http://www.usagamesinteractive.com
would be enjoyable.

I might add here that we as blind folks are lucky in the sense our games are
rather small. Compared to games sited people play in this day in age, there
games can usually run a few gb, you on a dialup connection come out very
lucky at this point, as most games here run anywhere from 20 to 150 mb. I
also wouldn't want to download gb of things only to find out I didn't like
it - what a waste of bandwidth!

[Audyssey] manuals - Re: I give!!!!

2009-03-29 Thread Charles Rivard
User's manuals are often blamed for some of the problems that people are
having. Then again, it is found that people often don't read them. Manuals
are written by people who know what they're talking about for those that
don't. Think writing one is easy? Give it a try. In your spare time,
write the user's manual for something you have in your house, such as a home
stereo, CD player, or even, yes, a computer game. Don't leave anything out,
but make your manual understandable by someone who does not know the device
or product you are talking about. Be patient with the user and go slowly in
describing. Here's one for you, write a user's manual for a cell phone that
can guide a blind person through it's operations easily and in a way that
will not confuse them? I dare you. If you try this, you'll be able to see
the problem from both sides of the issue. Remember, the reader does not
know anything about what you're trying to teach them how to use.

Which to be honest is a waste of an investment.

more like 5 and 6. Has anyone figured out how to kill the air support
coming off the aircraft caryer. I haven't and the highest mission I
have won is mission 4 a few years ago, but can't seem to nab it now.
Thanks to all who may have some insite.

Hi folks,

Okay, I've dodged all the arrows, made it through without being crushed in
the cave in, and gotten to the place in the game with the alter, humming
statues, etc. Oh yes, and I've captured all the monkeys, collected all the
coins, and I think all the rocks, put the rocks where they need to be...I
hope. Now, can someone give me a hint what to do next to move on?

Thanks.

Hi charles.

i've written several faqs and tutorials, and with a litle empathy and
careful explanation it's not as bigger deal as you make out.

If I can explain brousing with windows explorer, the use of outlook express,
and the basic files and folders setup to my mum, who not only has no
computer experience, who's far from being technically minded in any way
shape or form (up until recently she stil made notes and other written
materials in braille), then i think anyone can learn if people will be
patient and explain things logically.

Oh btw, we've also played several of jim's games, and even troopanum.

Re: [Audyssey] lone wolf assistance

2009-03-29 Thread dark

Hi Michael.

I must confess I'm in the same position. I beat the first two missions of
the game a couple of years ago, was really pleased with myself and got as
far as mission 4, though targiting those circling destroyers was a
right pain, and I couldn't get the one going at 30 nots at all!

In the end I completed mission 4 by a very symple process, lowering my sub
to below detection range, lining myself up in position to take out an
aircraft carrier, then popping up, unloading torpedos like nobody's
business, then popping down again!

This was a slow process, but I was eventually victorious!

Right now though, even mission 1 is giving me trouble!

Hi Michael,
Yes, you successfully completed mission 8. It is not possible to destroy
the fighter support in mission 8. Most missions don't allow you to
destroy the fighter support. My mission, the Midway mission, does let
you shoot down the Japanese torpedo bombers.
