Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output
For me personally, I like the voice as it is in beta 20. Then again, I've been listening to speech for years, and am used to it at a high rate. I also think the game is very responsive, and have had no trouble with it. On 6/25/2011 7:28 PM, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi all, As I am now in the process of finalizing things in Mysteries of the Ancients for 1.0 release candidate 1 I would like to get your input on a few issues I have set aside until now. One of these issues is the matter of speech output for the game. As you all know back around beta 18 I rerecorded all the speech clips using Scansoft Tom's voice. Some have pointed out that the speech rate is way too fast for them, and they want me to rerecord the speech clips at a slower rate. I would certainly do so if I could figure out what is a comfortable speech rate for the majority of players out there. Its a bit hard for me to personally judge that is I tend to listen to speech at a faster rate anyway. However, I'd be willing to give it a try if people are still interested in me slowing the speech rate down. Others are just unhappy of the fact that I switched voices let alone speech rate. I gather quite a lot of you liked Acapella Heather, and many of you would rather see her return to the final release rather than Scansoft Tom. Again this is certainly doable if this is what the majority of you want. Either way I'm going to have to rerecord and update some voice clips. Finally, there is a third group asking for Sapi 5 support in the game. While I'm not completely against the idea I'd like to point out that doing so would require quite a bit of time rewriting all of the speech code to use Sapi 5 rather than prerecorded speech as the game wasn't developed with Sapi output in mind. Though, it is possible. My concerns with Sapi are this. First, that not everyone owns a high quality Sapi TTS voice, and therefore some users wouldn't have the same quality of experience as some of us with better voices like the ATT, Scansoft, or Cepstral voices to use.Second, I'm working with Blind Games Brazil and others to make Mysteries of the Ancients available to foreign non-English speaking markets. Its just easier to do that when someone can record the necessary speech clips, and drop them in the speech folder. Finally, last but not least, after we are done with the Windows release I'm going to pport the game to Mac OS and Linux and it will be easier if the game isn't tied to anything platform specific like Sapi 5. So as I currently see it I can either rerecord Scansoft Tom, restore the original Acapela Heather clips, or I can record new ones using an Ivona voice like Jenifer, Bryan, or Ashley, etc. Any thoughts or opinions? Level 2: The speed of the launching of the bottles increases after about 50, 100, 150, and so on, and the bottles also fall faster with each increase, but you can still shoot as often as necessary. Level 3: Highest skill level: Same as level 2, but only 1 shot per bottle is allowed. Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT
Could a check be built in to automatically check for the needed components, then prompt for download? I'm certainly OK with switching to the new. On 3/4/2011 3:03 AM, Philip Bennefall wrote: Hi all, Recently I have been making some drastic changes to the BGT core. As many of you will know, most audio games today use a technology known as DirectSound to output audio. BGT is no exception. Until about 3 years ago DirectSound was the interface of choice for all Windows based games. It has been around since 1995, and has become rather stable over the years. However, Microsoft are now pushing developers away from DirectSound as it is being replaced by a new audio engine called XAudio2. XAudio2 provides much greater flexibility when it comes to low latency audio processing, and is an over-all better system than DirectSound. However, in order for XAudio2 to work reliably I have found that the end users need to run at least the June 2010 release of Direct X 9. It is also necessary for users of Windows 7 service pack 1 to upgrade in a few cases. So my question to you all is this. In the next BGT release, would you like me to switch to XAudio2? This will give much better performance on Windows Vista and 7 as compared to DirectSound, but should be about the same on Xp. However, the games simply will not run if the user has anything earlier than Direct X June 2010 installed and it will force them to upgrade. Do I maintain two versions of the engine for a while, a DirectSound and an XAudio2 build, or are we okay to switch immediately? This is what I would like to ask you all before I make a final decision. Thanks for reading. Re: [Audyssey] Creating Adventure Games
I really like the single letter navigation/items idea. I also like the ability to either pick a screen reader to provide the output, or the Sapi/dispatcher for the output. I also think that availability of a game on a cell phone, specifically the iPhone would be very cool! On 2/18/2011 4:04 PM, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi everyone, For quite a while I have been thinking of trying my hand at some simple text adventure games and maybe eventually work my way up to some sort of game like Nethack, Ancient Domains of Mystery, or maybe even as complex as Entombed. As most of you know i use Linux most of the time, and the majority of accessible games are text adventures. So this would be a logical place to start since such games are relatively inexpensive and easy to make, and usually are cross-platform too. Of course, there is various text adventure systems like Inform, Adrift, Tads, etc but I've been thinking of writing them in a traditional programming language like C, Java, or Python. Anyway, before I even think of the technical details there are some things about the user interface I'd like to get your input on. First thing, is input. Most of the text adventures out there use various commands like grab sword, grab torch, light torch., etc. I could continue this tridition, but it seams to me there is an easier way to do this. For example, what if you pressed g for grab item, and then a menu popped up with a list of items in the room. You could then select the item you want to grab from a list. This would save a bunch of typing by effectively doing the same thing. For moving around the level asining directions to n for north, s for south, e for east, and w for west would certainly be preferable to ttyping out north, south, east, or west. What do you think about this approach? Second, is output. Again there is a couple of ways of doing this. We could certainly have everything be printed directly out to the console, text directly to the screen, which you can use your screen reader for. The other way is to use a Speech API like Sapi, Speech-dispatcher, etc that would automatically read out the information on the screen. This would make the games slightly less portable, but would have the advantage of automatic speech output by default. Any thoughts weather you would like to use a screen reader or use Sapi directly? Finally, we get down to the technical details. As I said I am well aware of Inform and Adrift, but in many ways those text adventure systems are not quite as flexable enough for what I want to do. If I wanted to create a multilevel dungeon like Entombed they would fall short pretty fast. That leaves me with the option of using a language like C/C++ or something else. At the moment I'm thinking of C/C++ because if written correctly the games should be fairly easy to recompile for other platforms and devices. While Java and Python have their advantages too if I wanted to port these games to cell phones, note takers, it wouldn't necessarily be as easy to do. However, the advantage of Python or Java would be I could hit the big three platforms Windows, Mac, or Linux with one easy swoop without having to recompile anything. Any thoughts? While an unlimited distribution license obviously offers the greatest flexibility and freedom, as has been discussed previously the price tag is way too high for many when paying up front. So I've thought of another method. What are your opinions of a single product license, which would allow you to make and sell as many copies as you could manage, of one single game? This license would be somewhere around the $150 mark, and would let you sort of test the waters commercially. If that first game sold well, you could then get pro at a later date or get another single product license for the next title as well if prefered, etc. I'd be greatful for any feedback on this. Kind regards, I think that's a great way to get started. It allows someone to try it for $65, then to sell one game for $150, then to really grown with the full $850 version. Re: [Audyssey] MOTA News
My view on these scenes is that they do make the game authentic, but once it's heard 10 times, it does loose it's appeal. It features the longest list of changes so far, so please be sure to read it carefully. Users of Windows x64 platforms especially should notice some radical improvements in this version as compared to beta 0.2. As always, the list of changes is below: Beta Version 0.3: * Updated the script interpreter to the latest version which fixes some more bugs found by users. * Added global date and time properties. * Reworked the menu class to support Sapi. Please note: Existing code using this class needs to be slightly modified in order to run. * Added a file_exists function. * Added two more string functions (string_contains and string_replace) (thanks Damien). * Added the ability to compile scripts into standalone executables, however this functionality is only available to preorder users. * Modified the end user license agreement to reflect the fact that demo users will not actually be allowed to compile binary executables. * Added a privacy policy. * Some bugs that would occur when playing audio on x64 machines have been fixed. * The pitch of a sound can no longer go quite as low as in previous versions, as it would often cause unstable behavior. * Added a property to the sound object called pitch_lower_limit that allows you to check how far down the pitch can go for the current sound. * Disabled the system menu that would appear when pressing the alt key in the game window, as this interfered with the BGT keyboard input (thanks Lukás). * The engine now looks for include files properly, e.g. first in the current working directory and then in the BGT include directory. * Changed the compiler output to specify the full path of the file that the error or warning message in question is refering to. The word section has also been changed to file. * Added some extended error checking to the compiler which is useful in some rare cases. * Moved the Blastbay office to a new location (thanks Stockholm furniture Removal Services, sort of). I hope that some of you will find these new features useful, and if you have any comments or questions or worries or complaints or problems or... That sort of thing then speak out! The new changes are as follows: * Updated the script interpreter to the latest version which fixes some more bugs found by users. * File reading and writing support has been added, both for binary and text files. * Properties to get the current position and total length of a sound have been added to the sound object, along with a method to set the position as well. * Partial support for Microsoft Sapi 5.1 text to speech has been added. * A fully featured waveform tone generator has been added which allows the creation of musical compositions using sine, sawtooth and square waves. * Fixed a few minor errors in the tutorial. * The error edit control now uses word wrap rather than a scroll bar. * Switched from the MinGw C++ compiler to Visual Studio 2008, which brings us up to date with all the latest Microsoft features, and which also produces an executable that is roughly 400 kb smaller and runs considerably faster. * Fixed a few object methods where I had forgotten to set the global error flag based on the results. I just downloaded it, but I just want to say Thanks very much for all of the hard work you've put into this. As a result I generally don't have a lot of problems getting around the levels in Monkey Business. One reason I believe I am so good at Monkey Business, Sarah, or Shades of Doom, is even though I'm totally blind now I still think like a sighted person. I'm able to see the level in my head and put doors, items, staircases, whatever in their proper relationship to each other. I'm able to see an entire level like a 2d map with this or that to the south, this or that to the east, something else is west of here, etc. So from what you and Scott both have said I gather blind people generally don't think like this. They think of an area not as a whole, but only in terms from getting from one landmark to the next. This is completely foreign to me, and would be for anyone who has been sighted for very long. This sounds to me like a very big difference in perception from a sighted person's point of view of the world and a blind person's point of view of the world. If so that would explain why I don't have problems getting around games like Shades of Doom, and why so many others can't make heads or tails out of the mazes. They litterally have no sense of depth, shape, and how things relate to one another in the real world. dark wrote: I love the sound effects and environmnet of the game too, I just find the unprecise nature of the game's navigation features rather gets on my nerves. there's personally nothing more annoying than hereing an object beacon, walking towards it only to walk past, then attempting to find it only to realize it's on the other side of some complicated wall Terrain. I admit though, my senses of both space and navigation are pretty abyssmal, even in real life (I remember all my routes by land marks, not by any sort of relations betwene the places I'm going), which is probably why i personally need such a handy navigation system as the one in the Gma engine and terraformers. Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Side-Scroller vs FPS
I say Bring on the Modern FPS! I for one am tired of classic games. I want a modern game, that really rocks! Randomize everything, and I'd love a network play option! Modernize it all the way! -- From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com Sent: Wednesday, October 28, 2009 6:03 PM To: gamers@audyssey.org Subject: [Audyssey] MOTA Side-Scroller vs FPS Hi everyone, This has been something I've wanted to say for quite a while now, and I think now is the time I need to say it. To get this out of the way as your opinions, responses, etc will completely determine the future of the game from here on out. This is extremely important, and I hope all of you take this message very seriously. I hope you think about your responses very carefully before responding as your input is very important to me right now. As most of you know James North was planning on releasing a remake of the classic side-scroller Montezuma's Revenge. He took several orders for that game in December of 2004, but do to a variety of personal issues he was unable to complete the game within the time specified. Eventually, I took over development of the game in early 2006, and I decided to rewrite the game in C# .NET. I was nearly finished with the game in January of 2008, had already taken orders for the game myself, when I was contacted privately regarding the game's copyright infringement. As neither James or I had legally applied for permission to make a modern remake of the game I was officially ordered to cease and desist all development of the game. Rather than fight the cease and desist order I complied, and began my own side-scroller called Mysteries of the Ancients. It was initially intended to be a classic side-scroller along the lines of Pitfall, Montezuma's Revenge, Mario Brothers, and similar games. The thing to keep in mind here is that those games lacked many of the features modern FPS games have today. There was no such thing as randomly placed items and monsters, you couldn't save your game and pick up where you left off later, when you punched an enemy you didn't miss unless you were too far away, etc. The main object of the game was to beat the game and earn the highest score possible. For some of you younger gamers it would be quite primitive compared to the Play Station and XBox games you are use too. It was a completely different generation of gaming. I realized back then that many of you may not be happy with a 1980's type of side-scroller. I asked many of you if you would be happy with a more modern FPS game instead. The answer i got back was a resounding no! A couple of you wrote me very passionate letters about how much you would like to be able to play a classic side-scroller like those that were out in the 1980's that you were never able to play. So I set out to do just that. However, what I had feared all along began to come true. Many of you began making requests that were completely contrary to the type of game that was being developed. You asked for random items and monsters. After some debate I decided to add that feature, and removed the scoring feature since it was no longer needed. Those of you who wanted the feature were happy to get it, but those who didn't began asking me for a way to turn it off. They wanted a classic side-scroller, and asked me to stop adding features like that. Since it was too much work to have it both ways I had to decide to leave the random items and monsters in since most of the people liked it that way. The thing is the suggestions and requests didn't stop there. Over the passed year I've been consistently asked to add features like you would typically find on more modern FPS type games. It isn't so much I am a posed to adding these kinds of features, but it is inconsistent with an 80's type side-scroller. As the game currently is it is neither a classic side-scroller, and it isn't a fully modern FPS game either. For that reason some people, including myself, are unhappy with the way the game is turning out. I would much prefer either a straight out classic side-scroller or a modern FPS game. At this point the game is neither one, and is a bit of a mix of both styles. That might not be bad, but over the passed few months I've grown to completely hate the game because it isn't the game I wanted to create. It is nothing like it. So here is the question. Do you guys want me to go back and make this game as a classic side-scroller, as was intended initially, without randomized monsters and items, no save game features, no modern FPS influences of any kind, or would you rather I just completely ditch the entire classic side-scroller idea and create an actual modern FPS game with all the requests, suggestions, and modern features you want?Personally, as many of you consistently request more and more modern features from mainstream games you play I think the majority of you

Over the passed few days/weeks I have been involved in performing a major upgrade of Mysteries of the Ancients. As the work I am doing is largely experimental I don't want to say too much about the work as yet. Although, I think if it pans out it will be a big step forward with the game, and possably will resolve several issues with the game. That said, here is the deal. I've been porting MOTA over to a newer version of the Genesis Engine, and so far so good. Thing is since Genesis is primarily for First Person style games I never put an arcade mode in the main Genesis Engine. It was strictly an addition to the modified engine for Mysteries of the Ancients. Obviously I can add an arcade mode to the Genesis Engine, make it a standard feature, but I'm not sure if that is necessary. So I am going to ask this question. When playing Mysteries of the Ancients do you prefer arcade mode or standard mode when playing? Hello everyone, As many of you know I have been spending a little time the last couple weeks just working on the cross platform Genesis Engine so that when Mysteries of the Ancients is finished I can jump in and begin work on some new titles with it. Anyway, while working last night I had some thoughts about gathering target information. The first way is I could have you press a single key like d to gett the distance and direction to the enemy. Obviously that is quick and simple, but you might get a lot of extra information you might not want at the time. For example, it might say something like this. Enemy 1 Below and to the left Distance 15 meters As a gamer I can see the value of using different keyboard commands depending on what specific information you need. For example you might press shift+d for direction and control+d for distance. That way you can get absolutely the information you need/want without hearing the entire message. Any thoughts on this? Most of it is confusion over how the setup asks you to unpack files to the temp directory and than manually run dxsetup.exe after the files are unzipped. With this mind I want to switch to an installlation that is easier and more intuative for you gamers in the future. I'm wondering wich of the following you want me to try. 1. Instead of having gamers download and install the full runtime i can use the Microsoft web setup tool which will detect which DirectX components need upgraded or installed and will do this live from the internet. The good news is it is very easy to use, not confusing, but you should have a high speed internet connection to use it. 2. I can repack the installer with winzip self-extractor and force it to run dxsetup.exe, and that might resolved the problem with the temp directory. 3. Perhaps rather than either method I should just pack the Managed DirectX components in the MOTA installer and forget about the rest. I'm not sure if there are any compatibility issues with doing this, but I do know the Microsoft license agreement frowns on doing this. On the good side though is you'll get the files with install. Hi all, I am ramping up plans for an online head to head fighting game. At first it will mostly be a test bed for latency issues, so I can see what the limitations are for head to head combat over the internet. One idea I am picking at is the inclusion of The nintendo Wii controllers for the game. It is possible to use the Wii controllers via a blue tooth hookup with a PC. Having used these controlers on my Wii, I can tell you they are amazing. In the boxing game, the faster you punch with the controller, the harder your character punches. In Mortal Combat, you draw a pattern in the air with your controller to execute certain moves. All of this functionality is available with the PC port of the controller software. My question is, how much would the average blind gamer be into this? I think the draw to a head to head fighting game would be good, assuming lag issues could be worked out, but would the average gamer be willing to drop the $50 or so necessary to buy a controller and blue-tooth hook up? The possibilities for useing the Wii controllers is immense for accessible gaming, most especially for action titles. The balance board can be used as well, another $80 or so. Think of the ability to dodge your opponent simply by leaning, or run away from a monster by, well, running. Anyhow, it is an exciting concept, what do you guys think? Re: [Audyssey] Cross Platform Speech Support
Sorry I'm a bit late chimming in here, but I most like RealSpeek Jill. Thanks - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2009 10:26 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Cross Platform Speech Support Hi all, As most of you know I am currently updating MOTA 0.5 to use the new cross platform Genesis engine that uses open source game development APIs such as SDL rather than DirectX. However, I do need your input on something since there obviously is going to be a rather big difference in the way speech is handled with the new engine. In the current 0.4 release of MOTA the game gets DirectX and Sapi 5 support from the Windows specific engine. Since there is no Sapi 5 on Mac OS and Linux the newer Genesis engine uses wav files of pre-recorded speech to announce status messages, menus, etc rather than any OS specific TTS engine. There are several other game developers that do it this way like Draconis, GMA, and BSC so this isn't something new for accessible games. It is also just easier to do it this way when building a cross platform engine rather than trying to support Gnome-Speech, Apple Voices, and Sapi 5 with the same game engine. Which brings me to my question. I was going to have someone do the voice overs for the menus, status messages, for 0.5 but do to other commitments and scheduling our plans fell through. For the time being i am going to have to record all the messages using a TTS engine such as the ATT Voices, Scansoft Voices, Cepstral Voices, etc. If you had a choice which of the following voices do you personally prefer? Re: [Audyssey] Unable to Install emon
I'm afraid once getting installed, You'll most likely find that you still have some problems to put it lightly. I thought I had it working on my system. in truth it works only have the time. when the you launch the installer, bring up the system menu by hitting alt+space and going to the properies thing at the bbottom. somewhere on the options page you will find some control, right before the OK button, that will allow you to choose the window setting. As for the installing, I think press 1 followed by enter a few times will most likely do it. I'm going to see if I can find someone who will come and have a look at my screen to see if it's just a jaws problem. I would suggest getting a coppy of NVDA if you can. funnyly enough, NVDA started to gouf up. wile I was playing or was trying to play this game wile using it. Hey people! Another problem,. my jaws not work in fullscreen mode, when y put alt enter, jaws don't read anithing, only the window title with jaws cursor. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Lone wolf sound pack.
Dark, I can create that mission for you. Do you want it timed? Also want Any minds? Where will you want to be placed on the map or do you care? You can drop me a message including all the details you can about what you want in the mission in my inbox, but be shure the subject maches the email or I might over look it. On the other hand, I wish LW came with better sounds, so as soon as the soundpack is up, I'll grab it. --- I also rather like lone wolf and have no regrets of buying it, but I do wish I was a litle less pants at the game. I can only barely get passed mission five, the one with the aircraft carriers, and that only after loots of practice and failed attempts. Despite having all the missions from gma games saved, I really haven't played it much sinse I always get so destroyed. It'd be cool if someone who knows about the mission parza could create some more practice and tutorial missions, with stuff like how to hit a destroyer going at 30 nots, and a bit more of a chance to work out proper firing solutions for various angles of ships, not just 90, 45 and 180 degrees. I admit though, I haven't exactly played the game much after my abysmal attempts at the first few missions, so if there are in fact easier more practice style missions later on I might well have missed them. Hi list. I been on here for alittle while and haven't poasted yet, because I wanted to get the hang of things. anyway, as for joinsticks and gamepads, I have an XBox controler and it can be set up without sighted help. the only problem I had was driver hunting. The sight given on the box doesn't work, instead, you have to do a search on microsoft's site to find it, and this can be like a needle in a haystack. As for rumble feed back, as far as I know, this one doesn't have it. I don't recall the exzack moddle number, but it is easy to set up once you have the drivers. Are the sholder buttons those trigger looking things on the front of the controler,? Re: [Audyssey] STFC 2.
I think I would vote for the enter prise E. Maybe a blend of movie/TV stiles of gameplay? Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 2:45 AM Subject: [Audyssey] STFC 2. Hi everyone, Over the passed couple of months I have been tinkering with STFC 2.0 off and on. Unlike STFC 1.x STFC 2.0 is going to be a real time action game. Instead of commanding several bases, ships, etc you will be in charge of commanding a single ship throughout the various missions. However, that is about as far as I have got with the basic idea for the game. One question remains which ship to use. I personally want to stick with something Next Generation era and that pretty much narrows it down to Enterprise NCC-1701-D or Enterprise NCC-1701-E. Though, thje U.S.S. Defiant is also an option here. Each ship is good, but all depends on if you want a television series type plot or a movie plot. Each ship is unique. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, as seen on Star Trek Next Generation, is a Galaxy-Class cruiser. Armorment includes 250 photon torpedoes, 9 deep space probes, standard type-x phasers, and shields were rated at 2026 gigawatts. Maximum achieved speed on STNG was warp 9.6 for 12 minutes. Not bad, but after the movies came out the Enterprise E has really made the television series sound sort of lame. Enterprise NCC-1701-E, as seen in Star Trek 8, 9, and 10 has far more fire power than its earlier name sake. The latest Enterprise comes armed with 325 photon torpedoes, 175 quantum torpedoes, type-x phasers, ablative hull armor, and shield strength is 5056 gigawatts. Maximum rated speed is warp 9.7. As you can see the newer Enterprise has far more armor, firepower, speed, etc. The U.S.S. Defiant, seen on Star Trek Deep Space 9, certainly has its own interesting abilities and features. It comes armed with a cloaking device, 60 quantom torpedoes, 30 photon torpedoes, type-u phaser cannon, ablative hull armor, and shields are rated as 2026 gigawatts. Maximum known speed is warp 9.985. Definitly not bad ship specs if you ask me. I guess what I am asking if you had to pick one which ship would you choose. If you choose Defiant chances are I would make most of the missions take place during the dominion war so you can slug it out with Jem'hadar fighters, Breen Battle Cruisers, and Cardassian Cruisers. If you pick Enterprise D I would make the missions play out more-or-less like the tv series with each mission have its own bad guys, mission orders, etc. With the Enterprise E we could go either way. The Enterprise E was constructed just before the Dominion War, served through the Dominion War, and seen action after the Dominion War. Re: [Audyssey] USA Raceway trailer released.
Well, part of the reason it sounded like a Sunday drive is because I didn't really hear acceleration. Also, when turning, the engine should sound different I think. Perhaps there should be a bit of an echo, there'd probably be a wall at least on one side that the sound would bounce off... Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2007 8:51 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] USA Raceway trailer released. Hi Casey, Hmmm... Why do you think it sounds like a Sunday drive? Perhaps I can work on that some and make it feel like a race and not a Sunday drive. As for the radio turn signals James North recorded those when it was still ESP Raceway, and I simply kept them in since they fit well in the game. Casey wrote: The trailer sounded good. Hi all, Recently I've been strongly considering upgrading all my games to the .Net Framework 3.0 in order to better support windows Vista which others and I now are using on a daily basis. The plus side of doing this is that all that will be required is installing or upgrading DirectX to Aug. 2007, and then install my games on Vista. The downside is that users using anything earlier than Windows XP will have no support for my games. I've read that .Net Framework 3.0 only supports, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP all versions, and Windows Vista. Which means if there are any of you still using Win 2K it will no longer be supported. First, I'd like to know if there are any of you out there using or playing my games on Windows 2000. I need to know how big an impact this would be updating to .Net 3.0. Second, how many have upgraded to Vista, or plan to upgrade to Vista in the next year or two. Re: [Audyssey] Possible changes in Monty beta 2.
For me the only thing that sometimes happens with Sapi is that when I arrow down to the bottom of the Sapi voices list, the game freezes up. Other than that I'm happy with Sapi. Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, August 08, 2007 6:48 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Possible changes in Monty beta 2. Hi everyone, I'm considering making a few drastic changes in Montezuma's Revenge Beta 2, but before I go ahead with it I would like to let you folks on the list give me your own feedback and opinions on this. Since introducing a Sapi 5 driver to the game a number of end users have emailed me on and off lists with problems using the game with Sapi issues. As I am beginning to find out Sapi works for most of the game's users, but for those unfortunate enough to have broken Sapi 5 installs it becomes a support nightmare to solve. Sapi can be broken in so many ways it is an unstable technology to hitch my waggen to. My thought if this issue is serious enough for most gamers I could revert back to the way it was earlier shipping the game with it's own built in speech using recorded samples of Scansoft Karen, Daniel, Neospeech Kate, whatever. Are most of you satisfied with the current Sapi 5 support, or would you prefer the game go back to using prerecorded speech? Thanks. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible methods for locating special items in games.
I like the style in Monty and SOD the best for identifying objects. I think sounds make things very easy to pick out even if it does take some time and practice to learn. To me that's part of playing the game... Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2007 3:54 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Accessible methods for locating special items in games. Hi all, All of us know there are several ways to make an inanimate object accessible in a game for a blind gamer, but I am wondering which way is best. For example, in Shades of doom when you wish to find a door, datacard, security chip, etc you can locate the object by listening for a continuous beep. That's fine for Sci-fi games. However, assume for a moment we are in a castle like in Sarah. In Sarah you will hear words spoken like sweet spoken over and over until you pick it up. There is also a third way as in Montezuma's Revenge were you are presented with sounds for gems, gold coins, etc and you listen for the specific sounds to collect the items. As many of you know I am working on other titles besides Montezuma's Revenge. In Star Wars for example when a enemy drops a hand blaster how would you like me to identify where that object is. Would you like to hear the sound of a voice saying hand blaster, hand blaster, hand blaster, over and over again, or would you like an object locator sound similar to Shades of Doom to find that object. Recently Trenton has braught up the idea for an accessible Tomb Raider which happened to be one of my favorite game series when I was sighted. If I do eventually do one of those I'll have to be creative in identifying objects as most of them are inanimate objects like hyrogliphs, chains and levers to open secret passages, swinging ropes, weapon ammo, med kits, and so on. Basically, some things such as ropes and chains I can put sounds in which would fit with no problem. Some of the other things are questionable. Say you are seaking a golden mask or golden snake. I can't really represent them with sound, but I can use a object locator with a beep to pick them up, or I can use words to announce golden snake, golden mask, etc What are your thoughts on this? ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Star wars Game with RPG elements.
That sound great. I think this would add a randomness to the game that is sometimes hard to come by. Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, July 16, 2007 1:01 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Star wars Game with RPG elements. Hi all, I've been pondering a slightly different approach to doing combat in Rise of the Empire. Basically, what I have been thinking of is adding in some real time RPG type elements which would not only make each game completely different, but could really alter the battle system to make battles more challenging over all. Of course, to the end user most of this would be transparent as the computer would do the rolls, add the hit points, etc all in real time. Though in some reguards it would have the same sort of combat as a d20 dnd game. For example, when you start a new game it would ask you skill level, your afiliation such as Jedi or Sith, and then randomly roll for various stats like your initial stamina, melee rating, force energy, etc... Bottom line each new game you would end up with a different character with different strengths and weeknesses. The really cool part about this would be during combat. Say Starstone is battling someone like Darth Vader. vader would have extremely good stamina, melee rating, and generally good stats across the board. So a saber battle might go like this. You press the space bar and the computer behind the scenes rolls for attack damage, and adds your melee rating to that. Let's assume all total you get a 14. However, immediately after word the computer rolls for Vader's defensive roll. It gets his defensive roll, adds his melee rating to it, and stamina. Now, he comes up with 23 on defense. Since his roll is superior to your attack roll you will hear the two sabers striking each other, and your saber attack was successfully blocked resulting in no damage. Let's say we run an another attack and defense roll and you have an attack roll of 26 to Vader's 18. You would here Darth Vader shoot off sparks, and 8 points of health are taken away from his health. I think the d20 system has a superior advantage when it comes to force battles with Palpatine. Let's assume you are currently using force protect and Palpatine is using Force lightning. He raises his hand and sends a green bolt of lightning your way. You have your protection up, and depending on the attack and defense rolls plus your own Force and stamina stats will determine how much of the lightning you successfully deflected. Then, you might switch to Force stun in attempt to stun Palpatine, and he will switch to Force protect and the rolls will determine weather or not your stun attack was successful and for how long. What do all of you think? ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development.
I think this sounds good. I would like to be sure that these games written in c++ will work under Vista? Wood the fact that it uses directX 10 play into this at all? Thanks for letting us know. Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2007 3:59 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development. Hi all, I am throwing this out here for public discussion. Since this effects all of you as well as me I think this needs public discussion. As you know I have written two games that requires the Microsoft .Net Framework and DirectX 9.0C using C#.Net. Well, since choosing this path I've had nothing but headaches and trouble getting those technologies working on end user systems. In most cases the game runs, but now and then there is a system or more that can't simply be fixed, and the games won't run reliably. I think allot of this boils down to using new non-standard Microsoft technologies, and these new technologies are not reliable for mass distribution. At least, not until all of this is packaged as a core part of Windows. They are a part of Vista, but those versions are not completely compatible with the versions I am using so that means the older ones needs installed nullifying the fact they are there in Vista already. My current thought is after Montezuma's Revenge is released I should rewrite the USA Games engine in C++. The reason is I can use core MS Windows technologies such as the standard Win32 API, and even support DirectX 8 or 9 with no problems. Since I won't require the .Net libs for DirectX upgrading to the latest DirectX won't be as necessary as it is now. The major advantage here will be improved performance, greater security, and games should in theory just install and run without having to install a bunch of other things before hand. Obviously, it is too late for Montezuma's Revenge and STFC 1.0 at this point, but if we decide to go with say C++ I could write a new engine, and convert USA Raceway to C++. Therefor, when Raceway is released we won't have to hastle with figuring out which version of the .Net framework is installed, if the DirectX managed components are installed, if they are up to date, and so on. Re: [Audyssey] Side-scrollers vs FPS games.
I love some of the classic side scroller games, but I also like the fPS games. I think at least for the short term I'd like some side strollers, especially if they were based the classics! Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 10:31 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Side-scrollers vs FPS games. Hi all, Over the weekend I've been doing allot of thinking about the Monty game engine which I had design to be generic enough to be applied to new side-scrollers. However, it seams that many of you are really into the FPS type games such as Shades of Doom, Sarah, Monkey Business, etc. I know years ago side-scrollers were hugely popular in the sighted gaming market and has produced some of the most popular games of all time like Mario, Double Dragon, Legend of Kage, Castlevania, Megaman, etc... I know from working on Monty they are relatively easy to make, adapt to audio, and generally easy to learn and play. However, as sighted game technology has advanced the First Person Shooter was born. Games like Quake, Jedi Knight, Doom, etc began to be very popular, and for the most part many sighted games are usually some sort of FPS game and side-scrollers aren't what they use to be. So my question is when I complete Montezuma's Revenge and Raceway would you like me to continue to produce side-scrollers using the Monty 2D game engine, or update the Monty engine to support more 3D FPS styles of play. If we go with side-scrollers I can concieve of many clones of classic side-scrollers like Double Dragon, Mario, Megaman, etc being produced. In addition since there is more or less an engine I could create new interesting side-scrollers like a Star Wars one where you explore the death star kill storm troopers, gather items for points, and battle it out with Vader or the Emperor. Just an idea like that. If we go with FPS, (First Person Shooters,) then we can have games that are like Elete Force, Jedi Knight, Quake, etc with 3D worlds and mazes. Obviously things are more realistic, and navigation is harder to get since we visually can't see it. Though, it seams games like Sarah and SOD are hugely popular, and I'm uncertain as to which type of style the community really likes best. Do you guys like FPS better or side-scrollers. Re: [Audyssey] USA Games and SAPI support?
I think you should go with the SAPI method. I like the idea of getting the games just a tad earlier. Thanks Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2007 4:55 PM Subject: [Audyssey] USA Games and SAPI support? Hi everyone, I'm more or less throwing this one out here for some end user feedback as I need it at this point. As many of you know STFC 1.0 and Montezuma's Revenge Alpha 4.4 are using prerecorded wav files for speech playback. The problem with this method is generally that It takes me lots of extra time to sample, record, trim, and edit every voice file for the game. In STFC I think there are a total of 400 wav files I had to do which took me something like three weeks to do. With the end result being massive over head. Needless to say using prerecorded speech has added allot of extra time to every production, added CPU over head, and at the end of the day I have to put in lots of special flags to get it to act something like a synth doing key interrupts etc so that the speech wouldn't hold up the application, etc... On the positive side though the voice, speech output, is generally better than most synths. I have the option to correct the way the synth says something which helps. For example Cardassian which might sound like car-dashen can be respelled during recorded to say car-dass-e-an. However, I am not sure the improved speech is all that worth it. What I would like to do is build a speech class into my engine.dll which should support all Sapi 5 synths, and through a good Sapi tts engine you could gain self voicing that way, and not have to wait an extra month or so as I edit voice samples to use for the game. The advantages here is less overhead, more rapid production time for games, smaller downloads, custom speech settings, and allot of other stuff you don't get with prerecorded speech. Since I was working on my screen reading project i realized how much faster it is when you can just do something like synth.Speak(message, SpeechVoiceSpeakFlags.SVSFDefault); and on to the next line of code without having to actually record the message, load and then play back a wave file. Which eats CPU power, not to mention lots more of my time to do the wav self-voicing option. The only thing I need to do with Sapi is construct a string of text, store it in the message string, and pass it to the synth.Speak method, and away I go. Another reason to go Sapi is there are allot of high quality speech engines out there that can be generically ssupported. The scansoft voices which ship with Jaws 8 are simply awesome. Since I have installed them I have no problems with using them with LW and Jim Kitchen's games, and they sound good for synths. The catch 22 is I don't know how many you have purchased the higher quality synths, and how many of you are using the older Microsoft ones Mike, Mary, Microsoft, etc which sound, well, terrible. So what do you as end users think? Should I go ahead and make Sapi a core part of future releases? ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Future USA Games product designs.
I for one would like to keep things the way they are now. I make a point to keep my computer updated regularly, and when a new version of .net makes itself available I usually get it. It is the same for directX. Like you said I don't want to see things slow down either. It seams that currently most users of the USAGames had little or no problems running the games. There are always exceptions to the general rule, but I bleieve that developers should consentrate on creating the games, and provides the tools that enable the games to work, rather than make all of the pcs happy. Re: [Audyssey] STFC 2.0 questionnaire.
1. Do you want STFC 2.0 to be a turn based game as is, or would you like STFC 2 go real time where you command one starship, say Enterprise, and issue orders to your fleet? This would probably work similar to GTC where you give commands to your other ships, and they carry out your orders in real time... I would love a real time stfc style game! 2. The current STFC is based in the DS9 era. How would you feel about STFC 2 based on the TNG era of starships and enemies? I think I'd like to stay within the ds9 series. Foes seamed more difficult to beet. Also, I really like the defiant! 3. Do you want STFC 2 to feature different classes of starships, or have one single class of starship? I think different classes of ships would be fun, but I'd be fine with 1 class. 4. Currently STFC does not have any type of mines. Do you want STFC 2 to feature mines as a weapon? Yes, the minds that Rom helped to developed in ds9! 5. Several you have expressed dislike for the current sector location. Would you rather have the x/y coordinates read out like 50 90 or 85 22 rather than Sector A1 or E3? I think I'd like number based. 6. Some of you have requested the ability that each starship is equip with aft shields, port, starboard, bow shielding systems so that when a torpedo strike hits it damages the shields in one area which you may have to defend by transferring power from say from aft to bow or turn to allow the enemy hits to hit an area that is well shielded. I would like that especially in a real time situation. 6. In sTFC 1 there is only one class of Borg ship the Borg Cube. Would you like to see more classes of Borg ships such as Spheres, Scouts, Cubes, etc? Yes I would. 7. Are there any other special considerations you would like to make? I would like to see the ability for users to be able to create missions for STFC! Casey - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2006 8:49 PM Subject: [Audyssey] STFC 2.0 questionnaire. Hi all, There has already been some discussion about STFC 2.0 over the passed couple of days. Obviously, there are things that are missing from 1.0 such as a save game feature, bugs in the enemy AI, and other miner bugs here and there. However, to solve these issues I am placed in the position of rewriting the game from scratch. Since I really don't want to rewrite the game to fix miner issues I am wondering if we should make STFC something totally different from the original design concept. The following questions are here in hopes of flushing out what you, the STFC fans, want to see STFC 2 become. 1. Do you want STFC 2.0 to be a turn based game as is, or would you like STFC 2 go real time where you command one starship, say Enterprise, and issue orders to your fleet? Re: [Audyssey] final conflict error
Right, I hadn't seen all of the messages. Works fine now! Thanks Original message: Hi Casey, The error you described is likely do to an incompatible version of Microsoft DirectX as was discovered already on list. Steven's suggestion below seams to work everytime so far. Stephen wrote: go to: www.microsoft.com/directx then download the file dxwebsetup.exe, then run it. DirectX has been updated since xpsp2 was released, and the version on your machine just won't cut it Note you'll need to have a genuine copy of windows in order to download the file, and probably to install it as well. Hope this helps! btw: I can't understand why the windows update didn't pick up that my version of directX was out of date. Perhaps the updater is only for security vulnerabilities, though it doesn't speciffically say that on the webpage. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hi listers, As all of you are now aware the original STFC source code is gone so I am going to have to rewrite the game from scratch or from near scratch no matter what I do. Over on the audyssey list Nicol was making a suggestion of making Trek 2000 real time. I'm wondering since I have to rewrite anyway how would you all feel if I just rewrote STFC as a real time game? If we stick with the same old turn based game it will be basicly the same only better than before. If we go to real time the game could be more like Lonewolf consisting of missions you would have to cary out against the Romulans, Breen, Klingons, Borg, Breen, etc... Since it is in real time you would have to play one ship and stick with it. However, I can imagine how fun it would to be say the Defiant and cloak and and attack various targets deep behind enemy lines, or you could be the Enterprise patroling the Romulan Neutral zone when you are jumped by the Romulans. What do you all think? ___ Gamers mailing list .. Casey - Original Message - From: Che [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2006 6:24 PM Subject: [Audyssey] New Blind Adrenaline game survey Booga booga kids, As I wind down the beta programming for Rail Racer, I am considering gathering resources for the next release from Blind Adrenaline. Here are the three games I am considering at this point: 1. Kickboxer - A fighting game where two players meet over the internet to beat each others brains out. Like rail racer, this game allows use of the mouse or joystick to input various combinations against your opponent. For instance to pull off a roundhouse kick, you may need to move your controller left, then right and hit the second button. There will be lots of combos like this that willl need to be mastered to be an effective fighter. 2. Head to Head football - A football simulation allowing two players to go at it on the gridiron. This also will be internet ready, and will include season results posted to the web, so we can hold tournaments and the like. Besides a full playlist to simulate coaching, I plan on including the ability to control individual players to some extent during a play. The way I envision it, folks can set up their own leagues, and play an entire season of NFL football, with any teams not claimed by humans being played by the computer. 3. Gunship - A helicopter fighting simulation modeled after the Apache A64 attack helicopter. The Apache is currently the baddest helicopter on the planet, capable of holding a large amount of various missiles for tank killing, troop slaying, and target bombing. In addition the Apache has one of the most advanced targeting systems known to man with the TADS system, and all of this will be integrated into the simulation, along with the fearsome chain gun mounted on the front of the chopper. I am curious what players out there are most interested in of these three games. The games are pretty much listed in ascending order of complexity, and therefore development time, with Gunship being far more complex than the other two games. If I go with Gunship, you can expect an extended wait on the release of the simulation, as I used to be a hard core flight simulation player when I could see, and I plan on bringing a high level of intensity to this game. Please let me know what you think, and which game you would prefer.
