I've managed to walk around the first level of MOTA with no problems, find doors, etc. I used the GMA Engine as the basis of my engine in terms of features so if you can get around in Shades of Doom I think you should be able to get around in my games. First up, I think that having Blind and Sighted gamers playing together, either competitively or cooperatively, would be amazing and I fully support the idea. However, as a Sighted gamer, I've seen a lot of the bad things that can come from it so I have to warn you that if it's done incorrectly, you could end up having a lot more problems than you'd want. From what I've seen while browsing through the emails here and the forums at Audiogames.net, the Blind gaming community is full of awesome people that truly want to play new and inventive games. You guys seem eager to explore together, to build together, and to wage war together. That's awesome, and as a gamer I love that. Heck, that's one of the reasons I've been pushing Aprone to do more multiplayer games! I want to play with you guys too! Unfortunately, there are many Sighted gamers that don't feel the same. The majority of Sighted gamers are, in essence, similar to Blind gamers. They want to relax and enjoy the games they love with cool people. However, there are many that feel that they have the right to ruin the fun for everyone. Hackers, Spammers, Trolls, and just regular old Idiots run rampant on many multiplayer games, set on causing havoc for the sake of their own twisted fun. Aprone and I actually first met in a small game called Babo Violent 2, a multiplayer shooter game. We played together, and eventually became good friends. The game was fast, fun, and easy to pick up and play. However, it had little to no hack protection. I'll admit, I was one of the Hackers that found a lot of the security holes and had some fun seeing what I could do with the game. However, I wasn't malicious about it. I simply did it on my own, away from other players so as not to ruin their fun. Unfortunately, a large number of players thought differently. They ran rampant, making themselves invincible, cheating in the game, harassing other players, and even crashing the servers if they were bored. At one time players couldn't even get into a game because the servers were down constantly. It's sad but true, some people truly enjoy causing other people grief. Now, I'm not saying that you all should avoid having sighted players play with you. By all means, I think that goal is great and you should pursue it full force. However, be aware that with it comes some pretty hefty problems. It will require developers to rethink how they code their games. They'll have to take into consideration some form of anti-cheat programming, or even have a way for admins to remove cheaters from the game. It's definitely doable but will require a lot more work to make it happen. Anyways, my long rant is over. Lol! I know there are programs that can turn the display off, but as soon as one starts typing the displays switches itself back on. this of course, makes the programs useless. I'm willing to pay anyone that can code this as I've been looking for such a program for a very long time and can't find one. For instance, input.lib wraps DirectInput, speech.lib wraps MS Sapi, window.lib wraps the WWin32 API, and I purchased streemway.lib from Philip to wrap DirectSound. All of these libraries gives me that easy access you get out of the box with Visual Basic or one of the .Net languages because all that work is done for you. So obviously this takes us more time in getting started than someone starting out with a different language, because we have to write all that initial code, helper classes, and functions. Here is a few suggestions to check out. First, there is the ATT Natural Voices which happen to be sold through Nextup.com. I actually use Mike and Cristal a lot, and they are definitely some of the more human sounding voices out there. Next, there is the Swift 5 voices produced by Cepstral.com. Some of their voices like Callie and Diane actually sound pretty decent reading books from Bookshare etc. Even better yet they have 32-bit and 64-bit versions now, they have versions for Mac, Linux, and Windows and they seem to be open minded about supporting as many applications, screen readers, etc as possible. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their voices. There is the Ivona TTS voices sold by Ivona.com. These are probably the best sounding voices I've ever heard. They are a bit on the expensive side,$45.00 or so each, but they really sound human. I've been listening to a book read by one of their U.K. voices, Amy, and she sounds very human. Finally, there is the Cereproc voices Dark mentioned sold by Cereproc.com. I personally didn't care for their voices myself, but I do know some VI computer users/gamers like them. Now, if you want to hear the true plans for the project here they are. According to my notes I took these down in 2005. So I was right it was about six years ago. The game was basically to be a spin-off of the recently released Revenge of the Sith movie. The game was scheduled to have about 10 levels and you would play the game using various characters. For instance, level 1 was suppose to be the starfighter battle leading up to the attack on General Grevous's flagship. Level 2 you would take control of Anikin Skywalker and rescue Chanceler Palpatine and fight/kill Count Duku. Level 3 you would take command of Yoda and lead a strike force to the Wookiee homeworld to battle the droids there. Level 4 you would take the roll of Obi-Wan as he leads the attack against Grevous on Megeto where you would fight/kill Grevous. Anyway, the final battle would be you playing Yoda vs Emperor Palpatine. I can say that your description of the game is nothing more or less than a roomer.
