Re: [Audyssey] New RPG and Sound RTS and its potential

2007-09-25 Thread Dark
Well, it is literally months sinse I last played, but it's nice to get back
onto the Sryth forum and have a chat with everyone.

One advantage of being away for so long though, is that there's now so much
new stuff for Ekitrina to do, it's lmost like playing a hole new Rpg. One
disadvantage is that from being one of the top four or five characters in
the game, she's gone right down!

I think I'll have to buy her some Ag tocans to compensate, - especially
as her Mr is currently slightly low. (and I don't mind contributing to the
game anyway).

Beware the Grue!

 Hello Bryan.

This e-mail has had a surprising effect! you've finally got me to get up
 and
star playing sryth once again! there's so many new features, it's almost
like a brand new game, but at the moment, sinse I haven't been playing
 for
 a
long time, Ekitrina is slightly overwhelmed, and in need of more Ag
 tocans
and Xp, I also need to renew my subscription, which is a pain, sinse at
 the
moment my creddit card appears to have stopped working, I'll have to go
 to
the bank tomorrow and see what I can do. then I'll probably be donating
 to
Sryth, in order for Ekitrina to at least stand her own again, even if
 she's
not going to be quite up at the end of the rankings she occupied
 previously
(as I said, it's the questing i enjoy anyway).

Oh, and as to the forum, my account seems to have auto deleted itself,
 and
 I
had to ask Havoc of the Sryth forum to create a new one for me (which he
 has
 now done).

 Beware the Greu!

Dark, or as I am on the sryth forum, Darkempathy.

Hello che.

while I take the point about single player games, what you say does slightly
concern me as regards the Pvp aspect.

cooperative quests, and interactions with other players deffinately appeals
to me, but Pvp isn't quite as much my thing, and I'd be slightly
disappointed if this aspect of the game took things over slightly (as it has
in some other games I've heard of).

will there be some kind of limit on player killing, such as only having
specific areas for it? or choosing account types? (pvp or not).

According to my brother, in world of warcraft, you can choose to either play
on a Pvp enabled or disabled server, - even on the disabled server,
there are battle ground areas specifically for fighting other players if you
want. apparently though, Pvp servers can be a pain, sinse you can basically
be ambushed and attacked by total strangers at almost any point when your
not somewhere safe, my brother says this can be a particular pest when out
of quests.

Of course, other sorts of competitions such as raking, or contests not
involving player killing are apparently encouraged on both servers.

I imagine I'll be more in the minority in wanting slightly less of the Pvp
game aspects, stil, while your at the planning stage I thought I'd put in a
word.

Beware the Grue!

Hi Orin.

As you say, I don't think we can predict what's in the beta. I remember
playing the RR demo for a really surprising amount of time when it first
appeared though, despite only having one (and eventually two), tracks.

Judging by that, I'm quite sure of Che's ability to make a litle go a long

interesting (something else we can occupy our time with in the Beta).

Hi Yvonne,
Yeah, that is the down side of paid subscriptions, and one reason I have
as yet not paid for a subscription to play Sryth. I am on so
infrequently that paying for the game would actually be a waist of money
rather than worth it. Yet, I do like the game and perhaps once my work
load lightens up here I'll take a greater interest insome of these
online games like Sryth, and of course Che's RPG game.

would like a single player rpg so that I can pick up the game where I left
off and not feel as though I am wasting money everytime I choose not to play
my game. I am currently subscribed to Sryth. I enjoy th game very much but
it just seems like other things have taken my attention the last few months
and I haven't played much at all.

Hi Dark,
I think there is allot of room for PVP challenges that doesn't mean
player killing. For example, say your character enters a pub and plays a
card game with another player. You might win gold, a weapon, etc but not
outright kill that player.
Another fun PVP might be a tournament of champions where two players
must engage in hand to hand combat. They will knock out rather than kill
the other player. If you win the challenge you might win gold, hp,
stamina, melee, etc.
So there is room for PVP without slaying the persons involved. The
RPG developer just needs to get creative how it is done.

appologies Tom, you are of course right. I was using Pvp in the sense it's
meant in the vast majority of online games, - indiscriminating player
slaughter, often with theft, usually with rankings. This is one of my main
issues with the majority of text rpg's, that they devolve into repetitive
stat grinding just so that your character isn't getting constantly murdered!

I should've thought about my language though. Obviously players challenging
each other in the way you suggest would be an incredibly good thing (and
something I might well engage in myself).

most likely another thread entirely.

Raul,
I am not telling the dev how to make his game. I wouldn't presume to do
that since I know next to nothing about programming. I am however adding in
my two cents worth on what I would like to see in a game. I thought that is
what this list is for. The developer can take it or leave it. It is
entirely up to him.

Here we go again. If it's not people trying to tell Jim he should make
it so his games can have their audio files changed, it's these same
people trying to dictate how an online game should be made to not be an
online game. I guess if the thread started by saying: I'm thinking of
making game XXX, what are everyone's opinions on how to make this game?
Should it be online or local? Should it be both? Should we charge a
monthly subscription or not? Then I could see all these messages. Come
 on folks, really!

Josh said the following on 9/23/2007 2:55 PM:
ok what you could do is charge a fee or $30 or $20 for the single-player
game, and then if we want the online game we pay you for it, you send us
 a
key and those features of the game are unlocked when we enter the key or
 something like that.

I can understand that certainly, but it is not cheap hosting a
 dedicated
server every month, and the bills have to be paid somehow.
I think there will be enough players of an online RPG to sustain the
server cost month to month, but it can only be proven if it is tried, so
 we
 shall see.

 Hello Bryan.

This e-mail has had a surprising effect! you've finally got me to get up
 and
star playing sryth once again! there's so many new features, it's almost
like a brand new game, but at the moment, sinse I haven't been playing for
 a
long time, Ekitrina is slightly overwhelmed, and in need of more Ag tocans
and Xp, I also need to renew my subscription, which is a pain, sinse at
 the
moment my creddit card appears to have stopped working, I'll have to go to
the bank tomorrow and see what I can do. then I'll probably be donating to
Sryth, in order for Ekitrina to at least stand her own again, even if
 she's
not going to be quite up at the end of the rankings she occupied
 previously
(as I said, it's the questing i enjoy anyway).

Oh, and as to the forum, my account seems to have auto deleted itself, and
 I
had to ask Havoc of the Sryth forum to create a new one for me (which he
 has
 now done).

 Beware the Greu!

Dark, or as I am on the sryth forum, Darkempathy.

Hi Dark,

Quote
I know it's a very early point to ask the question, but I sort of vaguely
got the idea that some program code can be written in such a way as to make
new add ons and so on easier to create.
End quote

Yep. All Che needs to do is make some sort of level or quest editor for
the game which generates new things for the games, and they can be added
into the main engine. All thanks to good object oriented moduler
programming.
The Rail Racer track editor and Lonewolf mission creator are all good
examples of this.

Hi Yvonne,
Well, Che says the subscription should be somewhere around $5.00 per
month. According to the math that is only $60.00 per year. Not bad all
things considered I guess.
I imagine if he wants to he can offer discounts such as if you pay for a
year subscription it is $50 which is like having two months free if you
pay anually rather than monthly.
Che what do you think?

2007-09-23 Thread Dark
Hi Josh.

From what Che says, I don't believe this game is the same style as Rail
racer or Sound Rts, --- Ie, you either play against the computer or other
people.

rather it will be like a mud, and the way warcraft etc works, with a full
online world, in which the various human players are different player
characters. The online world contains quests, which you can undertake alone
or in cooperation with others. there might even be the option to fight other
players (though personally, I'm not as interested in all the Pvp type stuff
myself), and would prefer it to be optional rather than required.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Hi,
Agreed. $5.00 each month is more than worth it if this games turns out
to be as good as it sounds in theory.
That is only $60.00 per year, and as you so correctly pointed out many
of the commercial RPG games for sighted players is much more than that.
Even better it is going to be the first of it's kind for blind gamers
and that has a price higher than money.

Hi Josh,
Making a stand alone game, in my personal opinion, defeats the purpose
of an RPG. A qq RPG game is one where the developer or games master

2007-09-23 Thread Orin
The way that the game works (I asoom Hack and Slash, there's really no way it
could be played single player. It'd be out of this world boring.

If any of you play muds you'll know what I'm talking about. Especially since in
this game you'll have to party up with people for certain monsters I suppose,
but perhaps Che could make a singleplayer party system where you could cast
some sort of spell to have an NPC join your party.

Maybe this is getting too in depth, but this kind of RPG that Che is aiming
for, in my oppinion, is designed to play online, and only online.

Who knows though, we might see lots of things in the first beta. Anyway, it's
not even to that yet so I'll just stop with my prodictions...

It's not the price. I would be more than willing to pay a year's price for

Yes, that is a good point. Perhaps a system where one could suspend their
character for a time, or buy daily credits instead of monthly chunks. I
will give this some consideration.

 Che,
I think you misunderstood my concerns about the game. I am hesitant to
pay a monthly fee because I can get busy with work and I may only play a
 few
times a month. Other times I am not doing much and I can play a lot. I
would like a single player rpg so that I can pick up the game where I left
off and not feel as though I am wasting money everytime I choose not to
 play
my game. I am currently subscribed to Sryth. I enjoy th game very much
 but
it just seems like other things have taken my attention the last few
 months
and I haven't played much at all.

I can understand that certainly, but it is not cheap hosting a dedicated
server every month, and the bills have to be paid somehow.
I think there will be enough players of an online RPG to sustain the
server cost month to month, but it can only be proven if it is tried, so
 we
 shall see.

I am also excited about the multi-player rpg but I would also like to see
something that is a single player game. I am not sure that I want to

Re: [Audyssey] New RPG and Sound RTS and its potential

2007-09-23 Thread Che
There simply will not be a single player mode of this game, it would take
a lot of extra programming to do and most of the people playing it wouldn't
be playing for the single player experience anyway.
I think we have plenty of single player games out there, and the success
of Rail Racer online racing has shown me there is definately a place for
online competition in the blind gaming community.
Additionally, making it online only releves me of the headache of building
in anti piracy code, as the program itself will be completely free to
download.

ok what you could do is charge a fee or $30 or $20 for the single-player
game, and then if we want the online game we pay you for it, you send us a
key and those features of the game are unlocked when we enter the key or
 something like that.

 Hi che,

If we don't want to pay the monthly fee to play online then can we just
 play
 against the computer?

Absolutely, and it will work fine with multiple accounts, as has been
brought up on this list.
I agree with Thomas that if you aren't running multiple accounts with just
one admin you are putting yourself at unneccessary risk.
Please keep in mind, the coding for this game has not even started yet,
and it is a very ambitious project, so the beta probably won't be out for
another year or so.

Re: [Audyssey] New RPG and Sound RTS and its potential

2007-09-22 Thread Dark
Good grief Che! this sounds fantastic! I've been waiting for this type of
game for a veeery long time indeed.

Obviously now your only in the very preliminary planning stage, but one
question that does occur to me regards updates.

Personally, my favourite aspects of rpg gaming are carrying out the various
quests and enjoying the plot, and the exploration of the different
environments of the world. I've been incredibly jealous of my brother (a big
world of warcraft player), not only because of the game itself, but because
of the frequency of updates to both the world and the quests.

so, will the system be such that new quests and areas to explore will come
out on a relatively regular basis, - obviously not every week as in
warcraft, but more than say, every six months.

I know it's a very early point to ask the question, but I sort of vaguely
got the idea that some program code can be written in such a way as to make
new add ons and so on easier to create.

the voice chatting also sounds cool!

finally, any vague ideas on price? depending upon update frequency, I'd be
quite willing to pay as much as $15 a month for a game like that.

If it's too early to think about these sorts of questions now, I appologise.

It's just coming back from my weekly dice roleplay session, and finding this
mail, my brain is whirling with expectation and possibilities, - even if
it is likely to be a while before anything concrete turns up.

all the best.

Dark.
