Re: [Audyssey] Shades of Doom recording
Wow john its good to see someone attempt this again. The last time I attempted anything was back in my 20s where I had more time and less responsibility. Now I still have about the same amount of time, a little more responsibility and other things. Most of the time I always have something on and on the odd times I don't I junst want to relax knowing that the next day it will be back to waht it usually is. Re: [Audyssey] Shades of Doom Cheat codes
Hi Phil. I really ought to sort shades out. Unfortunately something wonkey seems to have happened with my Gma account and I'm not listed as owning the game with my account on the Gma site, and while David has given prefectly good instructions on fixing this involving copying bits of information and user codes and downloading new copies and what not I've just not particularly had the energy to go through it for essentially getting what is effectively a sound mod version of a game I already know very well, albeit an extremely good one, which I know is admitedly very lazy and more about my general lack of motivation than actual problems with the system. Indeed I've been vaguely tempted to just pay the 19 usd and count the extra as a donation to Gma, though again, the fact that when I already have a highly working copy on my Xp machine it's hard to summon the enthusiasm. This isn't to cryticise David and the upgrade, sinse I can see the point of what he's done and playing with the mouse would be fun, and what I have heard of the new sounds in the demo was nice, but it's just a case of actually featuring something exciting and new and interesting enough to make me get off my arse and take the trouble of installing it and refamiliarizing myself with all the controls. This is quite a contrast to say paladin of the Skies, where I really! was eager to try the thing, or even The Ensign, the recent sequel to A dark Room on Ios. As I said, I'm not sure how much is my general apathy with games which is probably just one part of my general apathy with life, as opposed to how much is David not putting enough new and interesting stuff into the upgrade to excite people who know the first game backwards like me, that is quite another debate and one I'd need to considder, plus of course it's one which i'd only be qualified to actually think about if I'd played shades 2.0 more than I actually have. Bit bummed that the sounds didn't get more of an overhaul here, for me the weaponry sounds have always been the slight downfall of SoD. Re: [Audyssey] Shades of Doom version 2 is released.
Hi phil sir that is a good news. Thanks for sharing it. as far as the concern of sounds I don't think so that david greenwood should change the sounds of game. I even not happy with eva voice as far as concern of the screenreader it is a good issue to talk about but I don't like to talk about. I tried NVDA but the screenreader support for only for former users I think because NVDA is not clear with this game. even I don't tried the game but I can think so. [Audyssey] Shades of Doom version 2 is released.
Hi all, Finally, Shades of Doom 2.0 is ready and out of beta. What's new: - Changes have been made so that sounds again represent the direction of the monster or object. After a previous version of Windows was introduced, sounds did not well reflect the actual position of the monsters and objects. The sounds seemed to center when the monster or object was close to the player character. - Changes have been made to remove a few problems arising with the introduction of Windows 8.1, - The user data files are now kept in the user's documents folder instead of being kept under the program files folder. This removes quite a few problems when trying to locate where Windows saved these files, especially for those running versions of Windows starting with the Vista version. This change should also eliminate problems related to privileges. - You may now use the mouse to play Shades of Doom. - Most of the sounds have been improved. - The EVA has a new voice. - You can select EVA's voice choosing between the default built-in voice, your screen readers' voice, or MS-SAPI. - Cheat codes are included at no charge. - There was a major reworking of the engine. - Many small bugs have been fixed. If you have not upgraded to Shades of Doom 2.0 during the beta, the upgrade price is $9.95. For first-time purchasers, we have decided to keep the price at $19.95 for the next little while. This is a $15 savings. For those who have already registered for Shades of Doom 2.0 as a public beta, you need only download and install the latest version and you are good to go. The latest version is 2.0.21. You may already have this if you kept up with the beta releases. You can download Shades of Doom from the following website: http://www.GMAGames.com To take advantage of the upgrade price, you must have an account set up with GMA Games. This will only take a minute. You must also have a Shades of Doom 1.2 registration in your on-line account. If you do not have this and you have previously purchased a license to Shades of Doom 1.0 or 1.2, complete a key replacement request through the Ordering Wizard found in many of our games, and send it to sa...@gmagames.com. We will try to process these as soon as possible. We will create an account for you if you do not have one, and add your Shades of Doom version 1 registration information to your account. The lower upgrade price will then be shown when you place an on-line order for Shades of Doom. Although we use PayPal to process payments, you do not need a PayPal account. PayPal accepts most if not all major credit cards. Re: [Audyssey] shades of doom
It wouldn't be te first time. People come up with crap like that for mainstream games as well. I had a friend who swore up and down that you could play as Yoda and the Emperor in Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi, which was a fighting game sort of like Mortal Kombat but with Star Wars characters and lacking any finising moves. There were a few unlockable characters but neither Yoda nor the Emperor were among them. Besides, the means for unlocking the real unlockables were reasonably possible, while the supposed means to unlock Yoda were absurd to say the least. Re: [Audyssey] shades of doom
Hi Ishan, Sorry, but I can't find anything of the sort. I need a specific url or something. I have never heard of this so-called cheat, spoiler, etc and is probably at best a bug in the game rather than a built-in spoiler. I'm surprised in 14 years this is the first time anyone has heard of this cheat. I'm frankly doubtful it exists, but am willing to reconsider once I have more information about it. cheers! Re: [Audyssey] shades of doom
Hi Ishan, For once I agree with you. the user's guide doesn't talk about this spoiler, assuming it exists, which brings me to the other issue here. Are you even certain this spoiler actually exists. I have been playing Shades of Doom since it came out and have never once heard of this spoiler in all that time on this or the GMA list. Therefore I am rather skeptical about the authenticity of the spoiler and think whoever told you that is just blowing smoke. I'd need more information about it to be convinced it actually exists. That all depends on A, if you found any, and B, if you have any just drop one and when an enemy monster comes in range it will trigger the mine and it will explode. If you are talking about the disrupter pistol the short answer is you can't. You don't find one of those until a higher level unless you use the all weapons cheat code. Cheers! Hi Charles, How did you get the window keystrokes to not speak in JAWS? I'm currently using letters to navigate as my arrows are sluggish and seem to elicit JAWS's generic "selected" and "blank" messages when pressed in conjunction with control and shift. I need the speech to be flexible. For example, to be able to say someone's name, and to eventually translate all the speech to other languages. There is another issue. What about keyinterrupt? When Jaws, and maybe other screen readers are speaking, you press any key and it interrupts the current speech. You can miss important information that way, and you may not even know that you do. Lots of suggestions were included, and it can be played using the built-in voice, your screen reader, or MS Sapi. http://www.GMAGames.com/sod20015.exe As with all betas, backup any SOD data you do not want to lose. For example, the folder: c:\users\\documents\Shades of Doom 2.0 should be backed up. This name varies depending on the version of Windows. Other possibilities could be: c:\users\\my documents\Shades of Doom 2.0 or c:\documents and settings\\my documents\Shades of Doom 2.0 In the program folder there is a file called English.txt. Re: [Audyssey] Shades of Doom Beta version 20015
My big issue with JAWS isnt' jerky speech, but the fact that JAWS insists on saying "blank" every time I hit a control left, right, ro down arrow, and that it says "selected" when shift is used in conjunction with the aforementioned keys. Also, JAWS seems to be intercepting the keys as usual, so holding the arrows isn't as effective without it. For the time being, I'm actually just using the built-in EVA voice. Something else I've just noticed, key interrupt seems a bit wonky. For example, if I'm running along and I hit V to check whether I've been down this passage before, that stops me running. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case in SOD1.2, and it's already making movement around monsters a bit fiddly if I want to check info at the same time as fighting them on higher difficulties. From 8 July: What would people think if instead of having a built-in voice, we use your choice of MS Sapi or your screen reader. In this way I can be sure of having a consistent, easily understood voice, since you have selected it yourself. Also, I can expand Shades of Doom and not worry about matching voice tamber, pitch, and volume. Voice actors have been suggested, but sometimes you lose track of them, or they might not be interested in continuing when you make changes at a later date. There is another reason. This does not happen with MS Sapi. Sod version 2.0.15 is ready for download. For those who might be interested in translating the speech text to another language, you may be interested in this file. Of course you will need to set Speech in the options menu to MS Sapi or screen reader to take advantage of any changes. From Phil: To turn on your SAPI or Screen Reader voice, Play the game and after David says hit f1 for help, do that. Note the default built in voice will be used until you change it. After hitting f1 use up arro to get to options Then right arrow to open them, then up arrow two times to get to speech setting. To change it use the space bar When you have the correct setting hit down arrow to save settings and hit enter. If your computer doesn't allow changing files in c:\program files\Shades of Doom 2.0, the default location, You need to uninstall the game and install it in a different location, I would try, c:\users\YourName\downloads or c:\users\YourName\games If the folder doesn't exist, you need to create it. For those who want to use your SAPI voices in Shades of Doom, you need to pick the voice, volume and pitch in your Windows control panel. It is under Text to Speech. I adjusted my pitch from 50 percent to 75 percent which sounds better in the game. Re: [Audyssey] Shades of Doom Beta version 20015
Just taking a run through the demo. I love being able to play with my screen reader or Sapi, but the output to native screen readers could probably use some refinement. At the moment, the speech is very jerky, presumably because David is sending the exact same instructions to the various screen reader APIs that he is to trigger the recordings that make up the built in voice, so you'll get something like "1, hundred" out of NVDA instead of a more natural sounding and productive "100". Where do I go to file this as a bug report? Does David monitor this place? Re: [Audyssey] Shades of doom.
Hi thomas sir and others eva and this cane are very similar they both are rechargeble and mobility devices. I think Lindsay should practice only one stratagy because he is asking a question repeatedly. It is very confusing because different people use different stratagies They tell according to there abilities and they also tell that stratagies which they find suitable for them. For example people use projectile ammo for blob but I prefer a grenade. So the only thing is Lindsay should use only one stratagy and practice it. He'll become an unique gamer if he should note my point. This thing is helpful not for shades of doom but his whole life. Smilee! Re: [Audyssey] Shades of doom.
Well if you are not using xp shades of doom and tank commander are just going to be hard to play because half the audio is gone. There is only one way to go in all levels up to level 6, there are vary few double enterancs to bother with. Its not that hard, you should eventually pass through all the rooms as they all go one way and find the final locked door. As long as you have everything. once you kill everything in the level and opened the crate for the level3 boss, a blob he should have a message and a chip. Re: [Audyssey] Shades of doom.
Hi Lindsay, That may be the case. I know I have a fairly good sense of direction, spatial orientation, etc so playing Shades of Doom is relatively straight forward for me. On the other hand you indicated problems with a sense of direction in real live travel so that will certainly effect your playing Shades of Doom, and you do seem to have an inordinate amount of problems with the game. I won't go as far to say it is impossible but you may have more difficulty than someone like myself. If you are good at map reading Shades of Doom has a feature where you can output the current level to a braille map. If you have a braille printer you could try brailing a map of the current level and use that to give you an idea of what the level looks like which may improve your understanding of the level's layout. If you do not have a braille printer but have a set of Legos you can construct one as you play the level. For instance, on level one you begin in a east/west corridor at the top of the map. There is a short north/south corridor that connects to a second east/west corridor right below the first one. There is a second north/south corridor that connects to a third east/west corridor, and so on. Its actually pretty simple if you feel how the level is laid out. All you do is go back and forth from west, to south, to east, to south, to west, to south, to east, and so on. In short, the only suggestion I can give you is try and create a map. Maybe e, just maybe, that will help you mentally grasp the layout of the game's levels enough to actually be able to navigate them. I don't know if this would help but maybe a developer like myself could create a game like Maze Craze which might help you practice navigating mazes or something. Cheers! Hi Dark, I am trying to get 2 points for the cheat codes, but can't seem to find anything to kill, shall I start again? And I am missing some messages, which I need apparently, and can't find. Lindsay Cowell -original message- Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Shades of doom. From: "dark" Date: 25/04/2014 11:47 pm Hi Lindsay. Well in shades of doom you can always check your direction facing with I believe the f key though I could be wrong as it's been quite some time sinse I played the game. Either way what I always did myself was learn directions relative to the way I faced. So for example if I was going north I'd know east was to my right and west to my left, while if I was going west north was to my right and south to my left. This let check which way passages were going, like for example in level one where thelong passage goes to the west then I believe turns north, then goes back east, meaning I know I'm now going opposite to where I was before. You can always check this yourself by using the control and arrow keys to snap turn right and left and then test out what direction your facing. Fortunately in shades of doom unless your picking up objects or fighting monsters all the doors and passages are at streight right angles so you can always use snap turns as main navigation. Also, coordinates are your friend. If you are on 1-1 and go east you will be on 2-1. This is a great way of checking your exact location and knowing if you've been somewhere before. You can also work this out relative to what direction your travelling as well. indeed some games like galaxy ranger not to mention some browser games use coordinates as their main navigation feature all the time. My own spacial sense is very lousy, I find it difficult to extrapolate maps from small peaces of information, bu by using coordinates and directions it's more than possible to create routes, know if you've been somewhere before, enter a room and exit it etc, it just takes practice and training your memory. If shades of doom is giving you trouble, try something with a less complex layout but still in first person such as gma tank commander or packman talks. Indeed perhaps if Shades version 2 has some sort of map editer, someone could create some practice tutorial style maps so that people can get to grips with directions. Funnily enough practicing this sort of thing in a computer game will help with your mobility, indeed I've recently got the blind square ap for my iphone which gives very similar information in the real world to the navigator in shades of doom, eg, what direction your going, what your passing etc. I'd also advise mobility wise just keep practicing and learning, start off with say a streight route with one bend on it say to get to the nearest shop and go from there, also bare in mind not all mobility instructors are partciularly good at playing to people's particular strengths (I once knew a lady who thought I was the spawn of satan because I reffused to step count and didn't acknolidge my landmarks method at all). Never used them to be honest. If you play enough you shouldn't need them. On most of the levels bar 1 there shouldn'tneed to be a backtracking going on, you just have to play them right. I won't spoil it for you because its dead easy. Remember that some 2-3 passage junctions can lead to different orders off things depending on your style, there is no wrong way. With the grenades, well they work rather like jim's golf game, you hear a rising tone and the higher it is, the further you will chuck them. The problem is if they hit a wall and rebound they'll hit you and kill you instantly, so you need to be careful. Generally I only use the grenades when for example I'm in a very long corridor. Actually it's one of the rather fun ways to deal with those gelatinus blobs and cyborgs on stage two where the toilet is, get them to chase you up that long passage then turn round and chuck them a grenade :D. beware the grue! Are you waiting for a complete firing solution on the creatures? That is waiting until you get the correct blip sound, rather than the higher pitched bleeps which indicate your closer but not quite there yet. Personally what I do with combat, when I've got creatures coming at me who need to be close to attack is back up and side step so that I increase the distance they need to travel to get me, then quickly turn and blast them. For creatures who can attack at a distance and are mostly stationary I tend to try and get into an optimal firing position outside of where they can hit me if I can. Re: [Audyssey] Shades of doom level 8
Linzy Shooting the equipment is mostly not a problem but you will need it for navigation purposes. Saying that there are cases where I have found it hard not to destroy something and then do something else in as well. Some stuff will kill you but will be in the line of your fire anyway. After playing a few times you should know what you need to do to kill a monster. Counting your shots is probably the only way to have a chance and being carefull weather you lewer the enemy to you or away from equipment. Though this does not always work since some have a patrol root. The other way is if you find a place you know there will be a few enemies hidden or in range of you and you can get a way not effected by disruptions you can try a grenade. ie level2 then you may try to chuck one. However there are cases where when they see you they will move to get out your line of fire. In which case target the closest one, hose and then the others and just hope. In all situations where this has happened though, I have never had to worry about destroying mission critical equipment. In some levels like 8, shooting the machines can save you some time in killing one monster, or if you do hit multipul enemies which can happen that is also good to. Sadly with my xp machine offline until I decide what to do with it, gaming won't be on my list. If those computer consoles, radios and other noises weren't there I would find shades much harder to play sinse as I said it's just those sorts of landmarks I use. I also make use of the coordinates system. If for example I want to know which side of the large pillered hallway I'm on in stage 2, I use the coordinates. I also use direction facing not to try and orientate myself with where I am in terms of a larger space, but to determine certain places to remember. For example if I remember rightly the corridor in stage 3 with the gelatinous blob and the toilet is a long passage heading east and most of the passages of it go south. This is funnily enough exactly how I navigate in real life, indeed sinse I've recently got the blind square ap for my Iphone which will tell me what I am passing in shop terms, what direction I'm going and what street I'm on it's quite remarkable how many of the skills translate across. Then again, I dread to think what fiendish mazes David has built into shades 2.0 so I might end up having to eat my words on navigation :D. Beware the gruye! Re: [Audyssey] Shades of doom level 8
Hi Charles, Well, according to David Greenwood he came up with a fairly simple solution to the problem. Apparently as I understand it he changed the values DirectSound uses to position the sounds in 3d and it seems to be working fine on newer versions of Windows as well as work more or less the same on XP. So it sounds to me like it wasn't a big problem to overcome. It just took some time and experimentation to come up with a new set of values and calculations to make it work correctly. Cheers! Hi Wayne, No, having a 64-bit version of Windows shouldn't have anything to do with it. I have both 32-bit and 64-bit systems here with Windows 7 installed on them and both work the same for me. Hi Lindsay, Sigh...As has been explained to you before there is no specific place you have to put the markers. You pretty much can put them anywhere you want them or think will do you the most good. In other words use your personal judgement. If you aren't able to do that effectively we can't really help you. I'm afraid it is possible you just don't have the necessary skills to complete a game of this complexity. Cheers! On 4/17/14, Lindsay Cowell wrote: > I ran out of markers. Hi Dark, Same here. I usually find just keeping track of the map coordinates and the direction I am facing is more than sufficient in finding my way around the levels. It is for that reason I am really amazed that so many gamers are having a huge issue with it as I didn'5 think the levels were that hard to navigate. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Shades of doom level 8
As I said, I usually marked pasages I'd explored when I wanted to explore the third, so for example if there was a three way intersection I'd mark the one that lead away when I went down it, so I'd know if I got back to that intersection to take the unmarked path. To be honest though as I said if you pay attention to coordinates, direction facing and the equipment sounds you shouldn't need too many markers, I think I only tended to use about 5 or 6 in a level. Re: [Audyssey] Shades of doom level 8
Hi Dark, That is a good point. The room you mentioned is also one of the same landmarks I use to know if I am progressing because while the number of enemies that appear from game to game in that room changes somewhat from game to game it usually has quite a lot. In any case it is something of an identifiable landmark just because I know when I go down that hallway and turn right into the doorway I best get ready to fight like hell, and I know if I clear that room all I have is two more large rooms to explore, and then take the l-shaped hallway to the elevator room. Something else that might help Lindsay is each room has its own equipment and general background ambiance. I can often tell exactly where I am in the level just by recognizing the sound of a computer console or fan somewhere in the room. Cheers! I personally tended to use markers to mark passages I'd already explored myself, so that I would know which passages to try. I found myself that though I do have a problem with spacial orientation, the same sort of memorization of significant places and land marks I used in real life worked in shades of doom, for eample if I remember rightly in level 1 there is a westward passage that finiishes at a right turn with a door ahead through which is a lot of monsters, so I know once I reach that point that I am nearly at the end of the level. Where and when to place markers is largely a personal judgment where you think they will do you the most good. There is no specific place where you must put them. Only put them where you think they will do you some good. For example, when I was first learning my way around the game if I came to a three-way intersection I would drop a marker there, because regardless of what corridor I picked I knew I would have to come back to that intersection eventually. How to mark areas you have already visited has been given previously, and it is also in the user's guide. Read the posts to the list so that this does not have to be repeated numerous times, please. --- Be positive! Are you perhaps asking about level 8? On level 9 once you shutdown the experiment with the experiment control box you need to grab the radio, and take the elevator up to the roof to get rescued. There isn't a teleporter on that level. As for the second teleporter on level 8, which I assume you are talking about, I believe it is behind a false wall if memory serves me correctly. Its been a couple of years since I have played the game so my memory isn't too clear on exactly where the teleporters are on level 8. Cheers!
