well I wouldn't install comodo stuff.
I tried their antispam once I didn't care for it so decided to kill it.
The installation routeen was busted.
I recomend you just reformat and never get any comodo stuff again.
The stuff is stable but after my experience I wouldn't trust it.
your isp is probably blocking ports.

What kind of firewalls are you running? It sounds to me like some

run an nmap scan onyour ip address, and see which ports are open and
which are blocked by your firewall.

Hi Claudio,
On the contrary I happen to think it is the fact Internet Exploder 7 is
brain dead when it comes to ftp sites. If you switch to a free ftp
client such as Filezilla you shouldn't have a problem with ftp sites any
longer.

As far as I know score posting does not use programs to send their score,
but rather an API. Mine uses a simple download function to download a PHP

Hi Bryan,
Actually, posting high scores to a web site doesn't have anything to do
with I.E. or Firefox. They generally run ascript which saves your score
to a text file or a mysql database on the web site. This doesn't need to
be done through a fully qualified web browser. Smile.

Hi Yohandy,
What kind of firewalls are you running? It sounds to me like some
blocked ports on your end. If you need some help with this I can try and
run an nmap scan onyour ip address, and see which ports are open and
which are blocked by your firewall.

FTP does not work either, I get a cannot find server no matter whether I use

communication. If anyone has any way of troubleshooting this I'd sure
appreciate it. I really like online registrations, until these sort of
 things happen.

Hi,
Well I guess you could use the phone, after all that's what Microsoft
does. You can force the user to put @signs and stuff like that. If
they enter a false email address, they will not get the code, and
cannot play the demo.

[Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-28 Thread Ryan Smith
Hi,
Well I am back for now everyone. Anyway, I was reading archives and
saw Damien was trying to prevent piracy in ACE Fire. What I could do
is, in the demo, force the user to give a valid email address. Then
have VB send an email to the person, using CDO, with a code. Once the
code is accepted, write a registry entry. This way you can always
check when the program loads up for the registry entry. You can also
send an email with the user's supplied email to your email (if they
enter an email on the vb end, send it to your email). You can send
emails through CDO. I also heard about Processor serial numbers. My
older computer running XP won't give me the processor number when I
try to use a WinApi in vb to get it, it just gives me X's.
Thanks!

I've been checking the list archives and I noticed a thread where liam
complained about people cracking his games.
Well liam, I've noticed something which you might take care of. I'm not
trying to be insulting or rude
I'm just giving a friendly warning.
Well, I don't own monkey business myself but I play it sometimes on a
 friend's pc.
I've noticed while playing the demo of super liam that the sound of the
monkeys dropping cocanuts is exactly the same as sounds in monkey
 business.
That little musical sound is exactly the same as in level9 in monkey
 business.
When you have to follow the monkey to the teleporter he makes that little
musical sound when you are close to him, when you get far behind him he
makes another sound. On the beach in the super liam demo I recognize that
 same musical sound.
I heard that same sound when listening to raul playing super liam.
The sound as the cocanut is falling together with that little whisseling
sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in the jungle and campsite
 in
 monkey business.
That dish sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in monkey
 business
and that whistling sound is the same as in monkey business when a cocanut
 hits you .
Because in monkey business if you walk into a tree more than once then
 you
 get hurt.
So liam, you want to take care of that. I don't think draconis is going to
be happy if they learn that you are using some of their sounds.
Ok its not a big deal, its 2 little sounds that is the same as in monkey
business, but if you are concerned about copyright issues and cracking,
 you
should really take care of those sounds by replacing it with original
 sounds.

Re: [Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
Well said. A lot of times we just don't think. We don't care about the
other side of the issue. We only see our side of the piracy issue, and
for most people that is enough. However, I can clearly remember such a
issue in my own life I now feel a bit ashamed of.
Back when I was in high school I had a girl friend named Mandy. She
really liked Amy Grant, but didn't own any of her tapes or cds. I knew
we had them at my house so in an attempt to win her affections I copied
them to tape, and gave them to her as a gift. She was predictably
excited to get a taped copy of Heart In Motion, House of Love, etc.
Though, at that time I didn't see it as steeling, piracy, etc. Just
something you do for someone you really like. A means of impressing the
girl you want to date.
Well, one thing I found out later on in life do to her Christian
upbringing Amy Grant actually does something useful with her money.
Instead of blowing it all on drugs, beer, etc she donates millions of
dollars of her own money to humanitarian origanisations that provides
homes for homeless families. She has spent millions on medicine, food,
and clothing for people who have none. Now, that I am older I would have
wished the $30 I pirated for my own interests might have been donated to
such good will organizations. It may have been used for a good cause,
but I didn't think or know about that side of the issue back then.

 legitimate copy.

Hi Shaun,
Yes, Che's locking system is pretty good. I like it myself. In fact, I
was working on something similar, but now I have the problem Mac and
Linux handle security totally different from Windows. Now, I have to
invent a totally new product ID system that will generally work on
multiple operating systems. Especially, since my new and improved
activation system relied on data recovered from the user's system
registry which Linux and Mac os do not have. Grr.

Re: [Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Well, how much you have to spend on a new key depends on the developer.
BSC has a very fair policy about handling new keys, and key
replacements. So does GMA. Microsoft is one of the companies that screws
you royally for a new product key, and one of the reasons I am beginning
to use more Linux software. I am tired of their draconian policies.
Like a lot of honest people I do not mind paying for software. What I do
mind is paying through the nose to get a new key for it if I get a new
laptop or replace a motherboard in a desktop computer. That is a
rediculous and unfare policy MS has regarding their Windows products.
It is one thing if you have to pay $35 for a new accessible game and
quite another if you have to pay $120 or more for a new key for Windows
Home Basic.

shaun everiss wrote:
thats true all the activations and checks windows has.
ok if you have the net and ok if its the same system but If you have another
system unless you are ditching the system that the product was on you have to
buy another licence, which costs as much as the full product.
I sertainly think this is real unfair for software companies to do this,
And in that case I wouldn't be happy since I had a copy of the software, I
also hate the fact laptops lock keys to the serials, i have dead laptops and
 desktops with xp on them.
These coppies are useless for that reason.

Re: [Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Technically that is the difference between intelectual copyright rights
and what the actual companies claim their rights are. I don't know if
you have read Microsoft's end user license agreements, but according to
them you do not own the software you pay for.
Specifically, the end user license agreement for Windows is written up
like a rental agreement. You are allowed to borrow and use the software,
for a fee, but you have no right to ownership, modification, sublicense,
or transfer your license under the agreement. Basically, you rent not
own the software in question. This is something that is not understood
by the typical Windows user at large. They think as you do they paid for
it so they own it. If they read their rights under the license they
would know they are renting not buying to own the software on their
computers.
That is totally different from the way the Linux community is setup.
Under their end user license agreements you are allowed to own, modify,
and freely redistribute the software under the terms of the agreement.
Open source software was designed specifically for people who have
addressed their intelectual copyright rights and demand full ownership
for the software they buy and use. That is why you can give Linux away,
sell it, modify it, do whatever you want to it, and no one can complain.

Hi Shaun,
Technically that is the difference between intelectual copyright rights
and what the actual companies claim their rights are.

Re: [Audyssey] Game Cracking

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Parham,
Not true. I have installed Ubuntu Linux 8.04 on my laptop, and Orca
works great with Firefox 3.0. It works a lot better than the 2.x
versions. I don't know where you got the information Orca doesn't work
with Firefox 3, but it isn't true at least with the latest builds of
Orca and Firefox 3.0.
As far as training courses goes you have a point there. Most colleges,
universities, and vocational schools haven't yet added Linux to their
training courses. At least not for the casual or average student. I did
have Linux for my Computer Science degree, but then again that was only
because it was emerging as a leader in server side software at that time.
However, as far as using shell commands like ls, cd, mkdir, etc there
isn't much demand to know that sort of thing since the majority of the
stuff is now graphical just like Windows. Many distributions of Linux
such as Ubuntu have done a lot of work the passed year or two in trying
to make Linux as user friendly as Windows and for the most part it is if
you get the right distribution. Problem is there are some Linux makers
out there that don't care about user friendliness, and they make all the
other companies that are doing it look bad.
Finally, if you want to talk about reliability I would have to say I
have found my Linux systems is far more stable and reliable than
Windows. For one thing all the thousands upon thousands of Windows
based viruses don't mean anything to Linux. Sure there are a handful of
Linux viruses out there, but the actual probability of ever getting one
is several thousand times less likely than getting a Windows based virus
on a Windows computer.
Both the dpkg and rpm package management systems are far more reliable
than Windows Installer based installations. The main reason is that it
will warn you if uninstalling a certain package will cause various
programs to crash, and they have smart installers. For example, if you
run the apt-get tool when installing a program it will see if all
dependancies are met, and if not go to the Ubuntu Linux web site and
grab the missing dependancies for you. Like if you install a game that
requires mono and SDL and they are not installed it will first install
them, or upgrade them to the required version, and then install your
game. This is so much nicer than trying to figure out what version of
Direct X a person has, if they have the .Net Framework, bla.In Linux it
will just do the version check for you, and just do the necessary
updates for you.
As far as recovering from a crash I have not found too many times where
the system crashed so bad I had to totally reboot the computer from
scratch. If Ubuntu Linux does crash, like Orca does lock up, just doing
an alt+control+backspace will kill the current Gnome session, take me
back to the login screen, where I log back in and resume what I was
doing. None of this Explorer has performed an illegal operation and must
be shutdown crap I have to deal with in Vista. If Explorer crashes I
usually have to wind up restarting the entire computer from scratch just
to fix the problem. So reliability is something I respect in Linux.
As for FreeBSD I have used it, but it is not my favorite OS. It is
falling behind Linux somewhat when it comes to accessibility issues. I
am not really all that impressed with FreeBSD's driver support. Their
primary market is server side applications, and wasn't really meant for
home user use like Linux is beginning to target.

Parham wrote:
 Hi,
speaking sighted-wise, it's because there are all these courses for learning
Windows and such, and there are not much people who know how to use linux,
let alone use it. My girlfriend who studied computers in highschool knows
about LS and stuff. They teach them very basic stuff, and on a RedHat
 distro, so it's not reliable.
Speaking blind-wise, I myself don't like Orca because of the support it
doesn't provide. I mean it's wonderful and it's going to be great in a year
or two -- but not now. FreeBSD still remains to be tested, though. I've
heard Orca doesn't support Firefox 3 on it!

 Hi damien,
what you are proposing to do is virtually impossible from a realistic
stand point. In general email clients save all account settings
including the user's email address in special account files in the local
user's Application Data folder. If we were talking just one email
program it might be a feasible concept. However, there are several email
application choices out there including Outlook, Outlook Express,
Windows Mail, Udora, Thunderbird, etc. It would be a nightmare to write
a utility to support every known email clients unique account file and
look inside for email settings and addresses.
Then there is of course all those users that use web mail services such
as Yahoo, Google, Hotmail, etc which saves all the account settings on
the host's server. In that case you are really in trouble as you need
admin rights to the server just to get a peak into those files, and need
to know what account to look into. In other words really and truly
 impossible.
About the only way you might be able to get their email address is have
a demo registration screen that comes up when running the program
forcing them to register the demo with a valid email address. this isn't
ideal, because even that can be faked or cracked which was the very
thing you tried to prevent in the first place.

 Damien Sadler wrote:
Well that would've been a slight problem. I thought it was possible to
 track
down an email address by their IP address, but many things could've
prevented that. I'll have to look for a method of retrieving the user's
email address from their computer or something like that.
I'm sure their email address would be stored somewhere in the registry
 or
 in
their email client's server settings or whatever, unless there's any
 other
way of doing something like this...
At least though, if I couldn't track down the user in question's email
address, I'd've had to release a patch that made all the previous keys
invalid and provide new keys to my existing customers who had obtained
 a
 legal key.

Re: [Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
Yeah, one time random keys do wonders for cutting down the cracking of
software. However, the problem with that method of security is it is
just as effective in blocking access to the program for the legal user
as the illegal one.
For example, let us say you create a random seed which gets encripted
and stored in the users registry hive. Ok, they register their program
and the random seed is used to generate the product key. The program is
unlocked and everything works fantastic.
Well, along the way that user gets a nasty virus or something that
whipes out there system. They need to reinstall Windows. Since the
random seed is no longer available their product key no longer works.
They now need to reregister their game. This will not be very apealing
to the user who paid for your ggame. If you make it possible to back up
the random seed then the game can be easily cracked.
If you use the processor ID as your seed for the product key that fixes
the problem of Windows reinstall, but forces them to register if they
buy a new computer. It is a lose lose situation really.

Hi Damien,
Well, if you are talking about online registration it it is a good way
to foil your average everyday pirate. Though, the system isn't a fully
bullet proof system either.
What you can do is setup a mysql database somewhere with every valid
name, product key, and product purchased by said user. You would then
have a script in your application that compares the registered name,
product key, etc with the master database on the server during
registration time.
Now, if you want to really get sneeky and make sure it is the same user
who purchased the product you can lift certain information from the end
user's computer such as the persons name, Windows product key, etc and
store it on the server. That way if said user gives out his product key
to a buddy his name, Windows product key, etc won't match and the
application will tell them they are trying to crack the software.

Hi Liam,
Well, as far as I know most orders for accessible games is done through
internet sales. That would indicate the majority of our users do have
some sort of internet access. Though, that is definitely a good argument
against web based product activation. I had the same sort of argument
with Microsoft tech support and Windows Vista's web based product
activation system.
However, the fact of the matter is that the majority of people who own
computers do typically have some form of access to the web. More and
more Windows products require internet based product activation, and
unless we plan to go to Linux or some other free software platform we
will all need web access to activate the majority of new products and
services for our computers.
Some products such as Jaws 9, Windows Vista, Rail Racer, etc are just
the beginning of web based product activation software. It is our future
like it or not.

Hi Thomas,
Yes most people do tend to have an internet connection, but people who are
on the move with a laptop using wireless aren't always going to have
internet.
I have internet now in my current residence, but as I am currently moving
from location to location, I could've ordered a game product here, received
my key, had to go off in a rush and find that in my new location I have no
internet, at which point I'm stuck until I move either back to my previous
location or to a new location with internet.

I think che has it bang on with activations through a server, and a way to
backup the keys and then if you run on another system you need to reregister
but you can backup that computers file to.
At 12:25 a.m. 26/07/2008, you wrote:
Hi Damien,
Yeah, one time random keys do wonders for cutting down the cracking of
It is a lose lose situation really.

thats true all the activations and checks windows has.
ok if you have the net and ok if its the same system but If you have another
system unless you are ditching the system that the product was on you have to
buy another licence, which costs as much as the full product.
I sertainly think this is real unfair for software companies to do this,
And in that case I wouldn't be happy since I had a copy of the software, I also
hate the fact laptops lock keys to the serials, i have dead laptops and
desktops with xp on them.
These coppies are useless for that reason.

 Hi Damien,
Well, if you are talking about online registration it it is a good way
to foil your average everyday pirate.
 Hehehehehe.

 Damien Sadler wrote:
I suppose the only other possibility would be to check whether the game
 is
pirated and make it revert back to demo mode if it is.
Hmm, I suppose a way to do that would be to put a bunch of registered
 codes
on a server or somethin', but I suppose that wouldn't exactly work, since
 a
not yet registered code could be used by generic crackers.

 Damien

well thats what site licence keys are for.
Unfortunately these things can be missused etc because you don't need the net.
also are codes that are tied to say laptops for example.
you can't use them again on another system though and in most cases they are on
incripted recovery cds or partitions.
I would though at some point like it if say I sent a laptop somewhere say to
the manufacturer to get got rid of because it was no good. and have the keys
unlocked to the software so I could then use it on another system, I mean I
payed for it and by right its mine.

Assunto: [Audyssey] very important message to liam erven!

I've noticed while playing the demo of super liam that the sound of the
monkeys dropping cocanuts is exactly the same as sounds in monkey business.
The sound as the cocanut is falling together with that little whisseling
sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in the jungle and campsite in
monkey business.
That dish sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in monkey business
and that whistling sound is the same as in monkey business when a cocanut
hits you .
Because in monkey business if you walk into a tree more than once then you
get hurt.
So liam, you want to take care of that. I don't think draconis is going to
be happy if they learn that you are using some of their sounds.
Ok its not a big deal, its 2 little sounds that is the same as in monkey
business, but if you are concerned about copyright issues and cracking, you
should really take care of those sounds by replacing it with original
sounds.

Assunto: [Audyssey] very important message to liam erven!

I've noticed while playing the demo of super liam that the sound of the
monkeys dropping cocanuts is exactly the same as sounds in monkey business.
The sound as the cocanut is falling together with that little whisseling
sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in the jungle and campsite in
monkey business.
Ok its not a big deal, its 2 little sounds that is the same as in monkey
business, but if you are concerned about copyright issues and cracking, you
should really take care of those sounds by replacing it with original
sounds.

Lol! I don't think it's only Liam's games that are cracked, anyway. Besides,
whatever one does, someone would come and crack the program/game/whatever.
My friend tells me that she cracked the latest game of Liam, because she
thought it wouldn't be worth paying for. Since I do not play much of audio
games anyway, I refrain from giving my own personal opinion on the matter.

Re: [Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-24 Thread Damien Sadler
Well that would've been a slight problem. I thought it was possible to track
down an email address by their IP address, but many things could've
prevented that. I'll have to look for a method of retrieving the user's
email address from their computer or something like that.
I'm sure their email address would be stored somewhere in the registry or in
their email client's server settings or whatever, unless there's any other
way of doing something like this...
At least though, if I couldn't track down the user in question's email
address, I'd've had to release a patch that made all the previous keys
invalid and provide new keys to my existing customers who had obtained a
legal key.

Regards,
Damien

Re: [Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi damien,
what you are proposing to do is virtually impossible from a realistic
stand point.
In other words really and truly
impossible.
About the only way you might be able to get their email address is have
a demo registration screen that comes up when running the program
forcing them to register the demo with a valid email address. this isn't
ideal, because even that can be faked or cracked which was the very
thing you tried to prevent in the first place.

trying to get someone's IP address through the use of local settings
should be illega. What ou could do is force them to activate the demo
using a code sent in an email, that way you could register their
address on the server andand if they crack it you know who to email :P
