I would guess that you could probably just re-enter the data in cfdisk or similar, but I'm not sure. Can anyone back me up on this? [gentoo-user] portage killed itself
Hi people, Wow, I can't believe it...after upgrading portage just today...I realized that it removed itself after I the upgrade. when I try to run emerge i get: "-bash: emerge: command not found" ...even accessing the manual : "No manual entry for emerge" ...even kportage sigfaults to something is definitely wrong. [gentoo-user] Subversion Ebuild
Hey all, Is there anyone out there who uses the new subversion ebuilds in portage? I've used subversion heavily since November, but I never used the gentoo-provided ebuilds because they were so out of date, and Berkeley 4.0.14 seemed to do weird stuff whenever I tried to emerge it. On my server the Berkeley/Subversion stuff is installed manually in /usr/local/ instead. Now I notice that the subversion ebuild seems to be more or less up-to-date again. Can anyone tell me if they've tried it, and if it works well enough for me to use? I admit I'd much rather be using ebuilds than manually installed /usr/local packages, but I won't install it untill I've heard from someone that it works (with the mod_dav_svn module for apache2 etc). [gentoo-user] [OT] Audigy2 configuration
Hi, This issue is not strictly gentoo-related, but I hope someone has encountered it in the past and can help me. I've recently bought an audigy2 card. I had no idea that it could be unsupported -- after all, the creative production is as mainstream as could be :). However, I can't get it to work. The alsa emu10k1 doesn't support it, but I hoped it would work in some sort of legacy mode. The module starts perfectly, but I can't hear anything from the speakers. (Yes, I did unmute the channels). Neither audigy2, nor audigy is not supported, according to alsa soundcard matrix, so I switched to OSS modules. The emu10k1 drivers from sourceforge.net should support audigy (not audigy2, though), but I can't even load the modules -- it exits with "unresolved symbol" error messages. Hope someone can help me. Also check with which USE flags gimp was compiled: $ etcat -u gimp (etcat is part of gentoolkit) If gimp was compiled without "tiff" USE flag then you will most probably have no tiff support in gimp. However gif support is always built in. If that's not the problem and GIF and Tiff are simply grayed out in the "Save" dialog box, then you can set "Determine File Type: By Extension" and then simply append "gif" or "tiff" to the file name. Hi, I have a laptop, and each place i come has different setting for DHCP, wireless, mount points and so on. Is it possible at boot time to choose where i am, and so activate thoose settings. I was thinking of several entries in my grub.conf and add something like this. kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda5 hdc=ide-scsi place=work1 But where can i grab the "place" variable ? Audacity 1.1.3 works for me on Gentoo. No messages at all in the term
where I start it. I'm using Alsa with an unreleased driver for an RME
card. (should be in CVS within a few weeks)

Ever since I emerged mozilla 1.4 the mail component has stopped working. I cannot send or receive messages. I am sending this from my debian sarge. Are bothe users the same ID ? Dit it work before ? The debian mozilla package is version Mozilla Debian Package did this so that whichever OS is active I can see any email received. Prior to the 1.4 emerge everything worked as planned. After upgrading to portage-2.0.49 I ran etc-update and then tried to edit make.conf with nano. Nano produced some blinking blocks of text that said something like "painting line 1 new line is". This is not verbatim as I exited nano immediately. Konsole then showed the following: bash-2.05b$ nano -w /etc/make.conf Main: set up windows delete_node(): free'd a node, YAY! delete_node(): free'd a node, YAY! delete_node(): free'd a node, YAY! (snip,snip many,many lines of the same) delete_node(): free'd a node, YAY! delete_node(): free'd last node. delete_opennode(): free'd last node. To me this looks like a virus. What do you think? i'm looking to move my existing gentoo install from a 3 gig hd to an 80 gig hd. i'm thinking i'll format the 80 gig (/dev/hdb) as 64 meg /boot (/dev/hdb1) 2 gig swap (/dev/hdb2) and the rest for / (/dev/hdb3) then i'll mount the /dev/hdb3 in /mnt/new and /dev/hdb1 as /mnt/new/boot and then cp -a ? all the top level directories except /dev and /proc to /mnt/new/ ? then i'll remove the 3 gig and everything should be sweet. i hope... any comments? -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

I had a problem, that an error message occured when I clicked on 'compose' or 'reply' which said, that I should try one more time... The debian mozilla package is version Mozilla Debian Package 1.0.0-0.woody.1. I have gentoo and debian setup to use a common /home. I did this so that whichever OS is active I can see any email received. Prior to the 1.4 emerge everything worked as planned. My problem was in fact, that I tried to use my old (1.3) profile. Perhaps better than a cp -a would be to enter: find dirtocp -depth -print -mount | cpio -pdfV /destpart where "dirtocp" is the path to the top of the directory structure to copy and "/destpart" is the full path to the mounted partition you wish to copy the file structure into. This copies every file, including directory structure, maintains ownership, creation time and permissions. The "-mount" prevents it from copying from a different partition than the one you start in (so /usr and /boot are not copied when you copy / ). After much frustration I finally found where the beast was hiding. It looks like "make" is not working correctly if you have CDPATH set. Unsetting CDPATH fixed the problem for me. [gentoo-user] MP3s playing too fast.
I have downloaded some copies of some old time Radio Mystery Theater stuff from various places around the Net. However, each and every one of the mp3s are playing far too fast. They all sound like a bunch of chipmunks reading a story :) I have tried using xmms and mp3blaster, and they both have the same result. Plenty of other music mp3s work just fine... Any ideas? -- :wq! Anyone on this list gone to Europe w/ a laptop? Going to Italy and France. I have an IBM T30. I know I'll need a plug adapter, but don't know if I need a voltage converter. [gentoo-user] determining length of MPEG video
I used dvd::rip to rip a DVD. It split it into the audio and video streams. When it used transcode to combine them, the audio was out of sync with the video. I opened the audio stream (.mpa) in xmms. It said it was 149:23. How can I determine the length of the video stream (.m1v)? Mplayer has support for outputting to a MPEG-PES audio or video stream. But I understood that alsa provides sound drivers, in substitution of the more standard OSS drivers, whereas aRts manages access to the sound hardware (something that apparently is not appreciated by many non-KDE applications). I don't know whether alsa can be viewed as an alternative to aRts, or whether an alternative is needed; my contact with these matters is very recent. Hmm. Not quite enough information here, would be useful to know if you're using ALSA or not. And which particular output plugin you're using in xmms. There _is_ an issue with some ALSA drivers in that select() isn't always handled properly. I know this can cause similar effects if I'm playing sound through SDL, which is the default for mplayer. If I set mplayer to play through ALSA directly, it works just fine: if it's through SDL, then the music plays fast and then skips as mplayer tries to sync the audio and video back up again. If you're using ALSA, try making sure that xmms is using an ALSA output plugin directly rather than going through anything else first.
