GOA PAY PACKETS

The interns of GMC going on strike for increased wages should jolt our
Establishment (including Corporate Houses) into seriously addressing this
wages problem IN ALL ITS ASPECTS before it explodes .Whilst MPS/MLAs ,
bureaucrats hike their salaries and retirement benefits inspite of their
many and considerable perks, and Board Members/ junior Managers get
comparatively indecent remunerations (not to mention CEOs etc), the salaries
of hardworking , salt of the earth people cannot be considered even as
livable wages. The wide disparities in income and lifestyles between the
indecent rich and miserable poor is dangerous,AND IT IS INCREASING BY LEAPS
AND BOUNDS!
The Minimum wages Act is not taken seriously, and for too long
has this exploitation been going on and on.The many monkeys it appears,
always get the bananas and the work horses the peanuts, belaying the saying
You pay peanuts, you will get monkeys

Hi Filomena,

While you didn't say abolish in the article this is what you wrote in a

who believes that all slums should be abolished
in today's wealthy India . (end of quote)

The word menace I believe was used by another netter in response to your

Just clarifying. I do not wish to continue this argument any further.

Rs.18 crore spent on Navelim roads: Faleiro
PANJIM, Sept 19: Minister for Education Luizinho Faleiro has said that
works to the tune of Rs.18 crore have been tendered for providing
facelift to roads in Navelim and its surrounding areas during the last
one year. [H]

Comment: I trust all those PWD contractors who felicitated Faleiro on
his recent birthday by taking out Newspaper adverts in the local
dailies were first in line?

The Roads were so bad, that the locals in Colmorod had taken to
protesting on the Main High Road. Having been the beneficiary of RS 18

No rationality went into this statement of yours at all
The USA has allowed a Goan immigrant such as yourself (Mario Goveia)
to fulfil your

opportunity to a fellow Indian who wishes to do the same in Goa.

To compare Mario to a slumdweller is to do him an injustice.

Mario did not defecate where he should not.

All this while 'fulfilling his aspirations'.

Pope Benedict has said he is deeply sorry Muslims have been offended by his
use of a medieval quotation on Islam and holy war but has stopped short of
retracting his comments

Since Pope Benny XVI has proved that he is fallible (As a devout Catholic I
ask - whatever happened to papal infallibility, Ex Cathedra ?), he has
apologized to Muslims who have been offended by his use of a medieval
quotation on Islam and holy war but has stopped short of retracting his
comments, and aroused worldwide violence that has already resulted in
inciting hatred and violent clashes and the deaths of several faithful
including the murder of a Italian Catholic nun in Somalia, he should repent
and resign and atone for his mistake and elevate Amcho Cardinal Ivan Dias to
the papacy -- since he has proved beyond reasonable doubt he is no longer a
worthy successor to the saintly Pope John Paul II who was admired by
Catholics and non-Catholics the world over.

Dr. Carmo D'Cruz,
Indian Harbour Beach, Florida

See news item below:

ANKARA, Turkey (Reuters) -- Employees of the state body that organizes
Muslim worship in Turkey asked the authorities on Tuesday to open legal
proceedings against Pope Benedict XVI and to arrest
him when he visits the country in November. Muslims worldwide have been
angered by remarks the pope made in a lecture last week that they said
portrayed Islam as a religion tainted by violence and irrationality.

Benedict has said he is deeply sorry Muslims have been offended by his use
of a medieval quotation on Islam and holy war but has stopped short of
retracting his comments.

Employees of Ankara's Directorate General for Religious Affairs, or Diyanet,
presented a petition to the Justice Ministry asking it to launch a probe
into the pope's remarks and to detain him when he
arrives, the Anatolian news agency said.

They said the pontiff had violated Turkish laws upholding freedom of belief
and thought by insulting Islam and the Prophet Mohammed.

The protesters held banners that read Either apologize or don't come.

It is not uncommon for individuals or organizations in Turkey to seek legal
action against world leaders whose actions they disapprove of. They have
never succeeded.

Benedict is due to pay an official visit to Turkey on November 28-30, his
first to a Muslim country since he became pope.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has described the pope's comments on
Islam as ugly, but the government has said it still expects the visit to
go ahead on schedule.

The Diyanet controls all imams in Turkey, writes their Friday sermons and
sends prayer leaders to Turkish communities abroad.

Ali Bardakoglu, head of the Diyanet, has criticized the pope's remarks but
has also welcomed his subsequent apology.

Cuncolim

During the tenure of the strong man of Varca and the brother of former UGDP
Supremo,Mr. Joaquim Alemao ,the dream of Cuncollekars of having a stadium got
fulfilled. The work on the bus stand and joggers park is in full swing as the
inaugration of these projects is scheduled on the occasion of Varca Strong
man's Birthday somewhere in November as normally our politicians like to
inaugrate such projects on such occasions.

The work on market complex is at the initial stage.Have they made a thorough
study on the project? Thanks to the agitators of Cuncolim for forcing to shut
down three polluting industries at Cuncolim. These industries were brought in
Cuncolim without making a proper study and also sacs of rupees were involved
as sanctioning such projects is a good source of illegal income to our
politicians in Power.Anyway Saude and Mamaim saibinn saved us from a disaster
although our ground water got affected.

The recents rains resulted in the flooding of a place called Dandora and
Uskini arik at Cuncolim.Although these two places don't have any link with the
site for market complex, has a proper study been made on the filling of these
fields could result?Where the rain water will go?I hope Cuncollekars will
definately don't like to be the victims of floods for no fault of theirs. Can't
they have project without filling the fields? The past and the present 40
thieves must have made a lot on money on such projects which I call as
unplanned development. It is the common people who are facing the worst
consequences as a result of such unplanned developments works.

Hope the market complex at Cuncolim will not turn out to be part of unplanned

Bishops, Muslims Build Bridges of Peace Following Pope's Remark

By Michael Gonsalves, SAR NEWS

MUMBAI, Maharashtra (SAR NEWS) -- Even as Pope Benedict XVI's apology
over offensive remarks on Islam has not fully quelled Muslim rage
the world over, Catholic bishops, theologians and peace activists have
called for more inter-faith dialogue to bridge the growing gulf
between the two world religions.

Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) president Cardinal
Telesphore P. Toppo, Archbishop of Ranchi, took the lead last weekend
when he met a group of top Muslim leaders following widespread
criticism of the Pope's reference to Prophet Mohammed and issued a
joint statement.

The Muslim leaders met me and gave me a memorandum, asking an apology
from the Pope. But I explained to them that the media had reported a
few lines of the Pope's lecture out of context but the Pope has the
highest regard for Islam, Cardinal Toppo told SAR News over the phone
September 20.

The Muslim leaders, who were satisfied with the Cardinal's
explanation, issued a joint press statement, which was carried by the
local media. The Muslim leaders also advised their community to
maintain peace and religious harmony in Jharkhand State.

It is crucial to hold inter-faith dialogues and frequent meetings
with Muslims at the diocesan and local level over common issues
affecting the communities from time to time, to promote deeper
understanding and appreciation of each faith, Cardinal Toppo said.
This is the effective way to build bridges of peace between
communities, he added.

The German-born Pope's remarks which were considered offensive
during a lecture in Germany September 12 had sparked outrage and
provoked protests from Muslim political and religious leaders of many
countries – from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and
Turkey to Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan. A Catholic nun was shot
dead in Somalia.

The Pope had tendered an apology for the adverse reaction in some countries.

Bishop Thomas Dabre of Vasai, who held a meeting with over 100 Muslim
leaders September 17 at the Bishop's House, said tension,
misunderstanding arise when there is increasing gulf between various
communities. We are all daughters and sons of one God and the holy
will of the Almighty is not to fear any one. Once we stop fearing
another faith, misunderstanding will vanish, said Bishop Dabre,
chairman of CBCI Commission for Christian Doctrine.

I grew up among Muslims. They were my classmates in school and
college and my Muslim neighbours treated me as their own, he said
adding, When I decided to join the seminary to become a priest, the
neighbouring Muslim family was the first one to honour me on 21 June,
1962.

The prelate said when he was ordained a priest in 1971 and on his
Episcopal ordination in 1990, the Muslim community honoured him. I
have told my Hindu friends to try to know the Muslim families before
stereotyping them with any label, Bishop Dabre said, adding India is
a unique country where all major religions of the world exist
peacefully and this should maintained.

Even as the Catholics throughout India prayed for peace during Sunday
Masses, September 17, Muslim clerics too stepped up efforts to contain
the controversy from getting overtly communalised.

At an emergency meeting at a Madrassa at Bhendi Bazaar in Mumbai
September 16, over 200 Ulemas and Imams advised Muslims to maintain
restraint in their criticism of the Pope, as any irresponsible
criticism could increase tension between two communities.

It is the ignorance of the people over certain issues which often
leads to misunderstanding and riots, said Maulana Zaheer Abbas Rizvi,
general secretary of the All India Ulema Council and national
secretary of the All India Shia Muslim Personal Law Board.

Naseem Siddiqui and Abraham Mathai, chairman and vice chairman of
Maharashtra State Minority Commission, respectively, said the issue
should not be blown out of proportion. Both were worried when RSS
praised the Pope's remarks, which they thought could provoke clashes
between the Hindu and Muslim communities. With the Pope's apology I
have been
appealing to my Muslim brothers to forget and forgive, Siddiqui said.

I have explained to Muslim leaders that the Pope has high regard for
Muslims and that he was quoted out of context by the media, Mathai

What's wrong with Goa's panchayats and their gram sabhas?

---
The Functioning of Gram Sabhas in Goa
Ms Seema Fernandes
Goa Institute of Rural Development Administration
Ela, Old Goa
No date mentioned. 107pp.
---

There's so much being written on Goa, but because it's not
widely catalogued or uploaded to cyberspace, it's difficult
to keep track of what all is being said. Here's a book one
came across because of a chance visit to the Goa Institute of
Rural Development Administration at Ela, Old Goa, in a
wholly different context.

Seema Fernandes' conclusions: Goa's overall panchayati raj
(rural governance) system needs improvement. Most people are
ignorant about the entire working of local self government
in Goa. Some didn't know that ordinary meetings and special
'gram sabha' (village council) meetings are convened in the
panchayat.

Most women said their husbands attended meetings, but very
rarely discussed matters at home. Others were ignorant about
the quorum needed to conduct gram sabhas. Most had never
attended a gram sabha meeting in their life -- they don't
feel the need to attend, or see it as a male dominated meeting.

And check this out: The people did not attend meetings
because they feel that the Panchayat (village council) is not
working for the village. They have selfish motives and due to
(their) affiliation with political bodies, only promises are
made but hardly fulfilled.

Other issues raised include:

* Elected women representatives do not address women's issues
at the gram sabha meetings.

* At meetings, people appear least bothered to hear the
minutes of the earlier meeting, and are not bothered on
other crucial issues like the expenditure of the outlay of
previous years.

* Some issues dominate the meets: issues pertaining to the
grant of NOCs for constructions, water connections, which
gutter or road or culvert has to be built or re-constructed,
why a particular person was given a construction license, or
illegal houses.

* Meetings tend to lack decorum in conduct, aggravated by the
fact that no time is given for the discussion of agenda
items. This leads to a lack of interest in meetings, boredom,
and walk-outs. Many a times, discussions get heated and
uncontrollable by the presiding officer; people would gherao
the elected representatives over issues affecting them, says
the study.

Ms Fernandes stresses the role of gram sabhas in rural
socio-economic development. But she says it can be a
meaninfgul institution only when a majority of the people are
involved. In reality, attendance is very thin. Average
attendance is around 30-50 people, except in rare cases. So,
the majority is absent when decisions are taken.

In the first place, the majority of the people are quite
ignorant of the role and importance of the gram sabha, says
the study.

It adds: People have expectations from the panchayat and
this hampers the participation at gram sabhas... Lack of
sound financial resources, adequate staff, instability of the
sarpanchas, interference at all levels are some of the
reasons hampering the success of the panchayat.

Ironically, though decisions are binding on the panchayat,
it remains only on paper. Participation in Goa's gram
sabhas is selective and therefore it can be called as a
group of people who have vested interests in attending the
meeting, and as such it can be called an autocracy.

This 94-page report (plus annexures) comes with seven
chapters. An introduction, another on the efforts towards
strengthening gram sabhas, a brief overview of literature on
gram sabhas in India, the Goa panchayati raj act, people's
participation, an analysis and conclusions.

Interesting issues for those wanting to understand this issue
of vital relevance to today's rural Goa. But it's not printed
as a book (yet) or available for sale. Such work needs to be
widely disseminated and discussed, if Goa's panchayats are to
have a future beyond window-dressing.

Dear Dr. Gomes
Please note that your well water could also contain pesticides! It isn't
that the beverage makers add pesticides or whatever. It just happens that
the ground water is contaminated, more in some areas, less in others. I am
certain that the Coke manufactured in Goa (Verna) will contain much lower
levels than the national average, if at all!!

The statement that the conclusions seem to be non biased and scientifically
sound is debatable!

This is what he had to say:
It would be advisable to be informed on the high levels of pesticides
found in bottled water and soft drinks manufactured in India. read
the original CSE Report (Aug 2006). The analytical methodology and
conclusions seem to be non biased and scientifically sound-although

I am yet to witness the ANY good work done by all those who insulted
Sanjith
Sunith

Agreed, that Sanjith works more intelligently than most.
But will Sunith tell me is he paid at the end of the day to do that work
from the tax I pay to the government?
Is he not a part of the government that Sunith blames, for not doing the
work?

If Sanjith is so great, then let him resign like Pilarnkar, the dy.
collector of Margao, over Matka. Only then we shall know the true colours of
your dear Sanjith.

All Sanjith knows is to cover his tracks by blaming people for all ills. If
people have to solve the garbage problems by themseleves then they do not
need expensive Sanjiths to prey on them for their salaries. We will send
them all home and do the jobs ourselves and also keep our money.

One must know how to govern. And a whip is the weapon which is the integral
part of governance. Sanjiths of this world do not know the meaning of a
whip. They only know to use their tongues, as I have said earlier. If Sunith
feels offended, he is welcome to put Sanjith in front of me any day and he
can be the moderator. Let us see if Sanjith will agree to it. He will, if he
is not a whimp.

There is a limit to using the school kids to do the work in the name of
awareness, which paid-for Sanjiths have to do on a full time basis.

Only 'Chakas' will cover for the likes of Sanjiths. (I believe Chaka - Chak

 Dear Clinton,

Don't worry, most residents of Panjim are well aware of the benefits of
the
chak-a-chak campaign. The best part of it was the super participation of
school students in the campaign made possible entirely by the hard work of
youngsters such as yourself. We all know the reason why Panjim is stinking
again and it does not involve Sanjith nor the campaign.

I am yet to witness the ANY good work done by all those who insulted
Sanjith
and the campaign on this forum, unless of course lengthy mails, petty
abuse
and completely un-feasible ideas can be counted as work. Also please stop
providing statistics and figures as they will be refuted by illogical
random
observations and a few personal insults :))

Keep up the brilliant environmental awareness work you are doing and
ignore
the ramblings of a few individuals frustrated by the sudden lack of
special
attention and molly coddling they face.

 Regards
 Sunith Velho

I take the below the belt punch at the chaka chak campaign personally as
I
 was
one of the few that was involved in that campaign. We spend a number of
days
and nights, often skipping lunches to get the programme underway. 25
schools
were invited, 300 students actively participated in a door to door
awareness
campaign, mass awareness material like educational videos and information
sheets was generated, a 4 day exhibition on alternates to plastics was
organized, and the outcome of all this was increased awareness, and
improved
segregation at source. Quality of segregation was 60% before the campaign,
 and
after, it was 80 -90%. The reason Panjim stinks is because of an
unconcerned
government and uncaring citizens. Don?t just blame Sanjit because of a
personal matter between you and him. Acknowledge the fact that he worked
towards the solution instead of just sitting quiet.

This doesn't add to the debate. Where labels are needed, logic is in

We, at South Goa Public Interest Action Group
(SGPIAG) a registered NGO based in Margao,Salcete,
South Goa District ,with jurisdiction, at present,
over the entire South Goa District, wish to invite the
kind attention of all NGO's and well meaning citizens
of Goa India to a Draft National Rural Housing and
Habitat Policy 2006 a proposal to be put up to the
Government of India Facilitated by South Asia Regional
Knowledge Platform.

The draft was earlier developed at the workshop held
at New Delhi on 23rd February 2006

ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT
A house with basic amenities of water, sanitation and
domestic energy, offering a sense of privacy, safety
and dignity is the right of every individual in
society.

Facilities of education, health and child care, and
special opportunities for income generation are
essential to the growth and well being of a productive
society, and form a part of human habitat.

It is the responsibility of a society to ensure that
basic human rights and equity of opportunities for
growth are available to all citizens.

As a nation, we give our selves “policies” to create
conditions that cause the realisation of rights and
equitable access to
opportunities for all.

The National Habitat Policy over the decades, has
sought to achieve the aim of “adequate habitat
(shelter) for all”. It has undergone many revisions to
suit national priorities and changing macro - social
and economic conditions.

The last National Habitat Policy of 1998, although
comprehensive, could not provide adequate direction
especially to rural areas in the absence of a focus on
the distinct concerns and needs of these areas.

The new ‘Draft National Urban Housing and Habitat
Policy’ attempts to tackle urban habitat issues. The
country now needs a ‘Rural Housing and Habitat Policy’
based on the “special character”, priorities and
potential of rural India in order that Rural Habitat
concerns are adequately and realistically addressed.
Considering its backward – forward linkages to the
overall economy, it is essential that rural habitat
development be seen in the context of rural poverty
alleviation.

The Bharat Nirman Program and the National Rural
Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) are steps in this
direction.

In order that positive movements are reinforced and
“people’s” investments are harnessed towards an
integrated rural development process, it is essential
that we give ourselves a National Rural Habitat Policy
that will promote conditions to facilitate the
creation of sustainable habitat and livelihood in
rural areas.

basin-South Asia Regional Knowledge Platform
(basin-SA) has undertaken a small initiative to bring
together ideas, opinions and successful methodologies
of different stakeholders to inform the development of
the ‘National Rural Housing and Habitat Policy’. The
dialogue was triggered by research and documentation
supported by the Building and Social Housing
Foundation, UK and Swiss Agency for Development and
Cooperation.

In this process, intensive research and consultations
with practitioners and policy makers across the
country
were carried out to form an understanding of rural
conditions, strengths, needs and potential for large
scale development of habitat and livelihoods in rural
areas.

The process resulted in the development of a
“Framework for a Rural Habitat Policy for
India” and has further motivated basin-SA to initiate
a country wide process of engaging different
stakeholders for developing a ---draft of the Rural
Habitat Policy – as it should be and proposing it to
the Government of India.

As a first step, a consultation was organised on 23rd
February 2006 in New Delhi by Akhil Bhartiya Samaj
Sewa Sansthan, facilitated by basin-SA and supported
by
DFID’s Poorest Areas Civil Society Program.

The consultation brought together NGOs, bankers and
government functionaries to discuss, debate and
propose clauses for the policy document This
document is the first draft of the policy developed
through this process to serve as a trigger for
discussion on policy clauses and provisions with a
wider audience.

It draws heavily from the ‘Draft National Urban
Housing and Habitat Policy’ (2005) and attempts to
connect the policy on urban areas with rural areas.

The process of policy development is now being taken
to all the States in the country for consultation.
Inputs from each State Level Consultation will be
incorporated at each step as the

The only thing that some of us have demonstrated concerning you is
that we don't take everything you say (or quote) at face value.

I'm sorry, I can't offer you any help in your newfound effort to stop

Thanks,
Another new Konkani word I learnt today.
(although, like many other words, it is not there in my Konk-Eng dictionary)

My analysis:
- It appears that 'bonk-maro' is derived partly from Hindi e.g Usko maro (beat
him)
- As it comes from Dominic's Antique shelf, it is evident that 'bonkmarop' is
not a new or
recent thing like in 1980s or 90s.
- I can well understand how and why the word 'Bonkmaro'
- I also understand that all Gays are not Bonkmaro/e
- Its Ok when it comes to M-to-M bonkmarop but what about M-to-F which is also
very common now
a day ? (perhaps, I am watching too many videos)
- Fianlly, Listen to this song first

Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh

Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightening
For they fought with expert timing
===
1980s, this was very popular dance in Goa (this song may be of 1970s)
I too enjoyed it very much (I Really miss those days)

This dance involves in touching each other waists bum (and elbows i think)
Where both (Male and female i mean) hit each other waists (Bendd) first
right(quickly
jump/QJ) then left (QJ)then Bum (Bonk).
When we were hitting each others bum (Bonk), and if you asked me what this was
called ? With
my little knowledge of konkani, I would say it is 'Bonkmarop'

Hoemwork:
Can any one suggest another (new) konkani word for 'Gay' ?

 Dear Clinton,

Don't worry, most residents of Panjim are well aware of the benefits of
the
chak-a-chak campaign. The best part of it was the super participation of
school students in the campaign made possible entirely by the hard work of
youngsters such as yourself. We all know the reason why Panjim is stinking
again and it does not involve Sanjith nor the campaign.

I am yet to witness the ANY good work done by all those who insulted

It gives me a certain thrill to announce that finally some well-meaning and
patriotic citizens of Candolim got together to honour a famous son of the
soil, Pe. Jose Custodio Faria who was born in Candolim, once-upon-a-time a
nondecrepit, sleepy little hamlet which did not even nhave an identity of
its won being part of the world-famous Calangute village.
The foundation ws launched at the hands of Shri Eduardo Faleiro who much
appreciated the efforts of the Foundation led by the indefatigable Shri
Tomazinho Cardozo and the local MLa Shri Agnelo Fernandes. He also assured
that he would take up the matter of honouring this great Goan at the
national level.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr.Nandakumar Kamat in his inimitable
style. Though he did not bring any new insight into the matter already known
he did intersperse his speech with his brand of humour which kept the
300 -strong audience attentive.
Earlier the gathering was welcomed by the Hon. MLA of Calangute
Constituency, Shri Agnelo Fernandes and the the introductions were made by
Shri Dominic Rodrigues. Shri Tomazinho Cardozo gave some glimpse of the man
and the future work of the Foundation.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Shri Rodrigues.
The foundation had also invited Prof. Santa Rita Vas whole documentary was
screened therafter.
As was the common refrain a beginning has been made in the right direction.
It's time we honoured our own with the honour due to them.

[Goanet] SAVE GOA FRONT REITERATES DECISION TO STOP IFFI 2006

A well attended public meeting of the Save Goa Front
held at Margao last evening (September 20) reiterated
and vowed not to allow the 37th IFFI, scheduled to be
held between 23 November and 3 December 2006 in Goa.

The Front has stated that it is left with no
alternative but to stall IFFI 2006 in protest against
the failure of the government to initiate any action
on the 7- point demands of the front.

By stopping IFFI 2006 the Save Goa Front would
highlight the plight of Goans and the ground realities
in Goa to the whole world.

Save Goa Front’s 7-point demands includes Scrapping of
Corporation of City of Panaji's plan to have a garbage
disposal site at Bainguinim it being a religious and
heritage site, the immediate recall of Goa’s Governor
S.C. Jamir for his cosmetic and partisan role and
moreover as his annual security costs of 2 crores was
an undue and highly exorbitant burden to the state and
national exchequers, a scrutiny and review of all
ration and voter cards issued, the immediate closure
of all polluting companies in Goa and a stop to any
more casinos, a ceiling on the quantum of land that a
person not of Goan origin may buy in Goa, a halt to
the rampant corruption and an immediate enquiry by the
CBI and Income tax authorities into all the
disproportionate assets of all current and former
Ministers, and a government policy to tackle
unemployment and a demand to immediately stop all
unnecessary extensions in service beyond retirement
and contract appointments.

Vowing not to allow Mr. Joaquim Alemao to set up a
garbage disposal plant at Baingunim, the Front has
demanded a vigilance inquiry into the recent tendering
of a garbage disposal facility at Sonsodo in South Goa
as the government will incur a heavy expenditure in
calling for an unproven, costly and non-workable
solution to the garbage issue, thereby wasting public
money.

The Front has expressed happiness that with the mass
support the Save Goa Front was getting from Goans
across Goa the Front would strive to preserve the Goan
identity, root out corruption and to prevent the
further degeneration of Goa’s cultural and moral
fabric.

The meeting was addressed by Mr. Bhiku Pai Angle, Dr.
Francisco Colaco, Mr. Babal Desai, Mr. Bissut Temudo,
Dr. Jorson Fernandes, Prof Harishchandra Nagvenkar,
Adv. Yogesh Gaitonde, Mr. Premanand Lotlikar, Mr. Joel
Morais, Adv. Jawahar Dias, Mr. Jose Maria Miranda and
the former Deputy collector of Margao Mr. Suresh
Pilarnekar.

Speakers expressed dismay at the state of Goa today
and appealed to every Goan to rise and play a positive
role in saving Goa.

Speaker after speaker lambasted the government over
various issues including the soaring levels of
corruption and crime in Goa, the pollution at Cuncolim
industrial estate, the high-handed decision to allot
free land to migrants at Moti Dongor, Margao and the
proposed mechanical ore handling plant at Xelvona.

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for posting your comments on the subject of gambling. It made
for very interesting reading. Your statement below was particularly
interesting:

Increasingly high rates of gambling have been noted among
Chinese communities, particularly new migrants and restaurant
workers. It is thought that this is precipitated by
loneliness, isolation, cultural and language barriers.

Would you happen to have any more research concerning the demographic
group you describe above in relation to gambling? I've often heard of
boredom leading to
drug addiction, petty crime, and depression; but gambling comes as a
surprise addition to the list. The common conception of Chinese
restaurant workers / new Chinese migrants is that they work so hard
that they have little time for anything else.

On a related note, there was an article in the _Wall Street Journal_
about a fortnight ago which talked about some of the bigger casinos in
China as being operated by wealthy Americans. They catered to domestic
and foreign businessmen, and not to the average Chinese person. So, I
was wondering, does the barrage of materialism that crashes upon
unsuspecting immigrants contribute to this (new?) love of gambling?

So I conclude this diatribe with some questions: Can Goa
afford to have ten new offshore casinos? Does it need to be a
gambler's paradise? Will these casinos create wealth for
Goans and Indians or will they cause more harm? Can industry
operators provide a safe product? If not is it better to not
have casinos at all? Will more casinos lead the way to the
 installation of electronic gaming machines?

Good questions all. Here is a partial answer from _New Scientist_:
The American gambling meccas of Atlantic City, Las Vegas and
Reno all suffer significantly higher suicide rates than comparable
cities that outlaw gaming. A new study suggests that cities pay a
price in public mental health when they cash in on gambling profits.

Gay marriages on the rise in Goa
Press Trust Of India

Panaji: The number of gays entering into wedlock in Goa is on the rise
and groups working for homosexual rights are demanding legal cover for
such marriages.

In the last couple of years in Goa, we got 25 such gay couples
married. They don't have social acceptance but the number of gay
marriages is rising, said Vishant Chodankar of the Humsafar trust in
Goa.

The NGO is the only one working for gay rights in Goa. Fearing social
stigma and discrimination, we had to conduct all these marriages in a
clandestine manner, he said.

A few years ago, a renowned male fashion designer based in Goa
solemnised his marriage to his male partner. It was recorded as the
first gay marriage in India.

Chodankar, who is himself married to a male partner, feels loyalty in
gay marriages is much more than in conventional marriages.

Without legality and social acceptance, many gay partners meet during
the day and live with their parents.

They are ready to come out in public with their relationship if there
is social acceptance, Chodankar said.

He says the NGO is worried about high susceptibility to
sexually-transmitted diseases among gays.

Every year, we meet around 1,000 to 1,500 new gay couples in Goa
itself. There will be many others. We have initiated an exercise to
educate them about the high risk they face, Chodankar said.

Referring to the demand for legalising gay marriages, he said, Gay
couples cut across the age group of 18 to 50 years. We need the
government's help to legalise such an institution, he added.

I don't pretend to understand homosexuality but
having known so many homosexual men, some of whom I
consider very good friends, I don't sit in judgment
of it. What goes on between two consenting adults
 is their own business.

Mario responds:

Selma,
I have no idea why you detect an undertone of
sarcasm in my post.

However, your admission that you have a host of very
good male homosexual friends reeks of an undertone
of sexism and discrimination against female
homosexuals:-)) [Two can play the same game of
identifying absurd reeks and undertones in what
others have said:-))]

I have both kinds of friends, just as I have friends
of diverse colors, sizes, shapes and ethnicities. The
reason we get along is because we have other things in
common and do not go around trumpeting our very
personal beliefs on religion and sexuality.

Your comical post reeks of presumptious indignation,
not to mention your remarkable ability to catch the
bull by the tail with amazing consistency.

First, in another recent post, you quote with absolute
certainty the opinions of atheists/agnostics on the
real reasons for the celibacy of Catholic priests.
This is like quoting Karl Marx on the wisdom of free
market economies.

Now you presume to interpret my use of quotes around
beacon of hope in describing Wendell Rodricks for
his moral support for the gay lifestyle.

In the meantime, you totally ignore the essence of
everything else I have said on the subject, which you
force me to repeat below:

a) As with private religious beliefs I have no
problems with what consenting adults of any gender or
combination of genders do in private as long as
they eschew stuffing it in my face. [Note: No smiley
face used, even though I was sorely tempted:-))]

and

b) I, too, am glad for all of them, as it must be
difficult to be gay in straight-laced Goa.

BTW, I used quotes around beacon of hope because I
personally doubt that the avante garde Wendell was
providing much hope for the average homosexual Goan
living under the storm-clouds of disapproval of the
very straight-laced Goans in Goa, any more than say,
Sir Elton John might provide. Look at Wendell, Ma!
is hardly likely to get much sympathy there.

Finally, I used quotes around moral simply to pull
your leg:-)). Please don't interpret it as anything
to do with real morality:-))

Peter,

Have you ever considered the possibility that you
might be wrong? From my standpoint, if you have
revealed anything in this forum, it is that you have
developed an antipathy towards me. I also know from
earlier experience, that you are fighting your own
imaginary battles between liberals and conservatives
divided along some arbitrary lines, and thrusting me
in the midst of them. I submit to you that the type of
groupism that you are advancing in this forum is toxic
by its very nature. I hope some day you find within
yourself the charity to post something without
insulting another human being.

Cheers,

Santosh

Fausto, I am aware of the fact that the Coke and Pepsi companies DO NOT ADD
pesticides. Why would I think so? Large quantities of pesticides in ground
water are a consequence of an over zealous green revolution. Another
consequence of this green revolution is the high levels of nitrate and
phosphate which have been added to coastal waters of the west coast of India
and which have caused severe eutrophication at mid depth. There is evidence
that an already existing O2 minimum zone may be increasing.

The statement that the conclusions seem to be non biased and
 scientifically
 sound is debatable!
What would you debate about this statement? I could pass on your comments to
my friend and he will certainly address them.

Once again, Santosh has it backwards. It has nothing
to do with being smart, since Santosh probably has
the highest IQ of all Goanetters. In my never humble
opinion the high IQ is part of the problem because it
has impressed several old and vociferous Goanetters,

submission and acclaim and reticence, and, until
recently, has gotten away with the most outrageous
assertions interspersed among many valuable insights
and observations.

However, as we have seen over and over again, most
recently in the unprovoked and horrific attack on
Gilbert's professionalism and core ethics, based on a
totally false reading of what Gilbert had written and
a rush to judgement that was grossly uncalled for from
a medical professional, what we need is an attitude
adjustment and a respect for opposing views that is
totally lacking, no matter how many personal

high time he reflected on what made them feel that

Hi VRR, Quite a few of us on this forum would know that Goa on
London's BTInternet service is Cipriano Cyp Fernandes, former PWD
engineer in Goa, from Arpora, and for long in the UK. If I'm not
mistaken, I first encountered him via Goanet in 1995. But he could be
requested to spell out his name in more detail if the other netters
request this :-) FN
PS: As far as Cyp goes, my perennial regret (hint, hint!) is that I
have been unable to adequately coax him to activate a cyberpresence
for Goa's oldest English-language school, the Fr Lyons-launched St
Joseph's Arpora and also build up the ArporaNet at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/arporanet/ But must add he's a great
guy for keeping in touch whenever he's passing through Goa

In 1974, Yassar Arafat standing infront of the UN
general assembly said to the world:

Today I have come bearing an olive branch and a
freedom fighter’s gun. Do not let the olive branch
fall from my hand.

Since then, we have seen very little of the olive
branch from the Muslim community. We are constantly
told that it is a small section of the Muslim world
that is given to extremist ideology, if so then where
is the moderate Muslim hiding?

The silence from their so-called voice of moderation
is deafening, while fatwas are pronounced, holy-wars
are incited against the infidels, beheadings are
carried out under Sharia law, planes and towers are
brought down in the name of Allah, embassies are
burned to the ground on the flimsiest of excuses.
Meanwhile the world is held hostage to Muslim
sentiments outraged by cartoons and speeches.

I read a quote once, can't remember where; nature
abhors a freak but cannot go for long without
producing one. When I use the term freak, I mean only
an aberration.

I think alternative lifestyles and genetic/chromosomal
aberrations such as homosexuality, eunuchism,
transvestism, have a very difficult time in India.
They are still mired in superstition and
misunderstanding of human sexuality and genetics.

If indeed bonkist and bonkmarop are words used in Goa
to describe homosexuality, all humour aside, it speaks
to the paucity of our understanding of such matters
not mention our lack of compassion.

Just as colour, race, economic circumstance, caste and
creed have long been used as an indictment on men's
character, so is sexual orientation used to
marginalise and demean sections of society. And we
should have none of it.

Dear Roland,

Please refrain from 'stuffing' this kind of information into patronizing,
homophobic faces on GoaNet :-( They are the ones who have no problem with
gays having 'civil unions' but legally santioned marriages Oh, no
what next legally sanctioned beastiality??? The typical homophobic
arguments furthered by ignorant theologians.

What appears to have been completely lost on many who would 'prefer to live
their insulated lives in ignorance' is that homosexuality has more to do
with relationships and less to do with sex. Bonkmaro is the typical
attitude of those who have failed to understand the emotions of homosexual
orientation, instead blaming just their hormones. I think 'Brokeback
Mountain' should be required viewing for them (even if the hormones do seem
to get in the way ;-).
