[Goanet] Goan Overseas Association elections
I received an email from a Goan Overseas Association (GOA) Toronto executive member informing me that there is talk of Kevin Saldanha running for president of the association. He wants to challenge Oscar Furtado who has been at the helm for maybe at least four terms. In a democratic setup, opposing an incumbent is part of the process. Oscar has worked hard to build the association and wants to continue his work. Those who have met and seen him work an attest to what I have said. Some years ago I asked him if he wasn't tired of running the GOA. He said he would quit if someone that he thinks would be an asset to the association comes forward to lead it. I doubt Kevin fits the bill. Forget how he ran the Goan International Convention and perhaps many will say I am bias because of what I wrote about it. No doubt would probably want to win the elections on the false canard that the convention, of which he The most recent news I heard from Toronto is that Kevin called the Goan Netters Association of Toronto (GNAT) and allegedly dissolved without inviting the president Francis Rodriques and secretary Bosco D'Mello. Francis is the founder-president and the man who originally thought of and worked to form the association. Besides, most constitutions of association gives the right to call a meeting to the secretary. On what basis Kevin called the meeting is a moot point. There is also talk that Francis has initiated legal proceedings against Kevin. Perhaps Francis himself or some GNAT members on this forum can clarify. The GOA AGM is on April 19. Goanetters in Toronto should make it a point to attend and vote for Oscar. Eugene

[Goanet] Is Mathany communal ?
I am amused to read Goan Observer and now Valmiki Faleiro hinting at Mathany's fondness towards BJP. The question that needs to be answered is --- is Mathany communal ? Mathany did side with BJP as against the Congress. When asked why, Mathany feels that the Congress are worse looters than the BJP in Goa. He is definitely right. Mathany sided with Parrikar because he was impressed by Parrikar's management skills. Each one has his own views. But it is important to know that unlike Babush and Digambar, Mathany did not join BJP. He maintained his independence. If Mathany gets elected, will he support BJP or Congress ? Mathany has made the following clear in the Herald interview yesterday. That he will give support to anyone who has the good of Goa in their heart and in the policies. I think today as far as we Goans are concerned, stopping the selling of Goa and the loot that is going on is the most important issue. Sure dirty communalism can spring its head up anytime. But, I am sure we can trust Mathany not to side with Modi's version of politics. samir

--- On Fri, 4/17/09, Gilbert Lawrence gilbert2...@yahoo.com wrote: Since you-both have asked for my clarification, I am stepping into this cross-current. Dear Gilbert, I had asked you to tell me why you think that even the religion that Fr. Ivo was preaching in these kinds of threads was pseudo-religion - a term that you used when you initiated this thread. Unfortunately, you have not done that in this post or any other. Instead, you have produced two posts whose contents as well as purpose are incomprehensible to me, and perhaps to others. So in order to try to understand what you are saying, let me ask you some simple questions and seek further clarifications from you. I would appreciate it if you could respond to them. There are the sciences of philosophy, theology, logic, human behavior etc. all of which fields (in varying degrees) are encompassed within the training of priesthood, irrespective of religion. Are you claiming that Christian priests and ministers, Muslim mullahs and imams, and Hindu bhots and swamis study science and scientific method as part of their theological curriculum? If so, could you please let me know the name of at least one science textbook that they are required to read. So IMO both Religion and Science can be scientific endeavors. Can you please explain how religion can be a scientific endeavor with at least one specific example? To be critical of the past (with a retro-spectroscope) is easy, may even border on demagoguery; but it is not very intellectual except for those with a low IQ. What in the world are you talking about here? The above statement does not make any sense at all in the context of what has been discussed in this thread. The problem is not the past but what is being done in the present - the fact that outdated ancient medical practices such as Ayurveda and Homeopathy are being practiced unchanged and untested at the present time. They are giving patients the same unregulated pre-scientific pills and potions that Dhanvantari and Hahnemann gave their patients centuries ago. How can you not recognize this simple fact after claiming in the same post that in your own field, breast cancer treatment has changed in less than three decades based on new findings, with the advent and insistence of the rigorous application of the scientific method in today's evidence-based scientific medicine? Whatever his political leanings might be, I have never seen Shrikant Barve abuse or slander anyone in any Goan forum. In fact, he did not even abuse the PM, a politician and an elected public figure, not subject to the same restrictions against public criticism that a private citizen enjoys. Shrikant simply raised a question. The answer to his question could have been No our`PM is not a liar. That is the answer I would have given him. [Goanet] Reponse to Bhaji on the beach
Dear Jason, This is with reference to your article, Bhaji on the Beach written in response to GBA's Picnic on the Beach invite to reclaim public spaces. You have raised several issues in your article. One of them is that if we do not have picnics on other beaches it amounts to selective targetting of a family. This is a typical response one gets when a general point is tried to be made through an individual case. The question asked is, why only the rape of Scarlette or the molestation by Narvekar or the land conversions by Babush or corruption by this Police or that Government official highlighted? While it is desirable that all cases should be addressed, does it mean that if we cannot take up all, we do not take up any? Just because some vested interests may take advantage of the protest and make us unwitting accomplices, do we allow the wrong doings to continue? My take on this is to do whatever possible with checks and balances. As a matter of fact, some years ago, we, as citizens of Goa, had held a similar picnic at the beach adjacent to the Taj, Candolim where locals used to be driven away by the security. You have also stated some of your aspirations from the GBA.You want a focused protest against the Government and a siege outside the Legislative Assembly till we put in place a legal and administrative system we want. You would like to see some more protests of civil disobedience where the livelihoods of people are the clear winners. You want a transparent and accountable governance through an efficient empowered panchayat.Only if these conditions are fulfilled will you participate. While there is nothing wrong in having aspirations, there is definitely something amiss when one does not want to participate out of choice stating that our protest will not continue onward to make the necessary challenge to the State. I believe that it is better to have tried and lost rather than not having tried at all. When GBA launched its first agitation against RP2011,we were not sure whether we would get 200 people.Yet we went ahead. The agitation not only revoked the RP2011, but inspired several village level struggles.for protection of livelihoods, lands and environment. You also stated that at the Land Acquisition Ordinance meeting in March, you hd suggested that we ought to focus on the larger processes through which the law in Goa is being subverted and we have to move our sights from manifestations to the root. . GBA is clear on that. However, for us ,the we means the people When GBA raised the demand for 73rd /74th amendment, it did not cut much ice with the people. The debate of whether the process was participatory or not was restricted to very few.Even the so called educated class could not make much sense of the debate in the newspapers. It is only when we explained the Draft RP 2021 to the people that they understood the importance of participatory process.People asked us whether the government would listen to their suggestions. That is the time we were able to impress upon them that the govt will be compelled if we have legal backing by way of 73rd/74th amendment which will be binding.Today we have support from the grass root level for this demand because people have understood and have therefore taken the initiative to write to the government demanding 73rd /74th, revocation of 16/16A which puts government projects outside the purview of RP. It is through the manifestations that one leads to the root.If these manifestations are not seen as problematic, then they remain firmly rooted with no challenge. Had we taken a stand that we will not participate because certain conditions of ours like 73rd/74th were not met, we would not have seen the kind of awareness and involvement of people in decision- making. Similarly had we taken a stand that we will not protest the Ordinance because it might look that we are targeting a particular family, we would not have reached this far of making a point on how the government bends backward to subvert law for the rich or on reclaiming public spaces. There has to be a connect between Theory and Practice. We are clear that we have to reach the finishing line.It does not matter whether we run a marathon or a relay. When the people at large will take this task upon themselves, it will not matter whether it was GBA's first or last step.It would be a positive step all the same. Come and enjoy the picnic. Regards, Sabina

Dear goankars, As per e-mails below on the topic Religion and Science: - Please remember that in India, 60% of families, earn a total wage of approximately Rs. 2,000/- per month. Hence, the majority of Indians, when they fall sick, cannot afford expensive, allopathic drugs and therefore, have to take homeopathic, ayurvedic, herbal, etc. medicine which is less expensive. Yes, when all else fails, we pray to God for a miracle cure, and God always hears our prayers and cures us. Today any branch of medicine is encouraged to cure, mind, body, soul. We Indians are truly lucky and blessed, because we have friends and relatives of different religious beliefs who will pray for our good health, when we fall sick. TS Eliot is still revered for saying in a few words what others cannot communicate in reams: By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third, by experience, which is the most bitter. Ignatius Bab, There are many konkani numbers the bands can play for the weddings. eg. Sacrament Zodlo by Seby, Mollbailou Dou, Adeus korcha vellar..etc but it all depends on the MC and the couple getting married. They can easily request the MC and the band to play konkani numbers.. This reminds me in 2005, I had my daughters first holy communion in Mumbai and there was a mix crowd for the function ...we chose the songs to be played for the dance which included a few konkani songs besides the Masala. In the end i requested the MC (Goan) to always play Konkani numbers for the goan functions. Now whenever I meet this MC he reminds, I have kept your word and always play Konkani Music for Goan Functions in Mumbai.. I think it all depends on each one us to keep the Konkani language alive. Dev borem Korum Edward Verdes http://edskantaram.blogspot.com/ After the lcl.I made it sure there were atleast 2-3 konkani numbers. From: ignatius fernandes I too complained bitterly about Goan bands playing English songs of yore (circa 1960 and 1970). I was reprimanded by JoeGoauk saying that Goan bands do not play many Konkani songs but churn out these old rubbish English songs to please the young Goan boys and girls who I am led to believe like these songs. How can we sustain our culture when these bands keep playing English songs. I cannot see any hope for Konkani language when we do not promote our own culture. Kind regards. Ignatius Fernandes.

Protect Goan identity: UGDP 19 Apr 2009, 0610 hrs IST, TNN MARGAO: The United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) on Saturday made a passionate plea to the people to support the regional outfit in the Lok sabha elections with a view to safeguarding the interests of Goans and protecting the identity of the land. Addressing a public meeting at Lohia Maidan Margao, UGDP leaders accused the Congress-led government of working against the interests of Goans and urged the people to reject the Congress at the hustings. Radharao Gracias, in his address, made a scathing attack on chief minister Digambar Kamat accusing him of indulging in vote bank politics to the detriment of the locals. The chief minister's policy of appeasing the migrants to strengthen his vote-bank has resulted in a heavy influx of the migrant population in Margao. The locality around his residence at Margao is so populated with migrants which makes one wonder whether Kamat is the chief minister of Karnataka, Veigas said. Sympathising with PWD minister Churchill Alemao for being deceived by the Congress by the dishonour of the agreement that promised Valanka the party ticket, Gracias advised Alemao to quit the party for the insult heaped on him. Churchill is a leader of the masses in the true sense of the term. Re: [Goanet] Religion and Science (part 2)
I cannot believe what Gilbert has written in the post appended below. He has not only misled Goanetters on the subject of placebos, and how and why they are used in drawing inferences about the effectiveness of treatments, but he has made questionable statements on the treatment of pneumonia - a potentially fatal disease, if not properly treated. The following quotes in particular are very troublesome. In case of pneumonia, reserve the antibiotics only to those who do not respond to 'chicken soup'. ..Gilbert Lawrence I want to ask Gilbert if, as a physician, he would recommend that a person who has been diagnosed with pneumococcal pneumonia be treated with chicken soup alone. The standard of care today mandates that an elderly pneumonia patient be treated with modern antibiotics within 8 hours to substantially reduce the chances of 30 day mortality. So, Homeopathy works... not in all patients. But we do not know how i.e. no current explanation of the mechanism of action. ..Gilbert Lawrence He wrote this because he found out that there is no difference between homeopathic remedies and placebos. This tells me that he has not understood why placebos are used in clinical trials, and how to interpret such a result. The correct interpretation of this finding is that homeopathic remedies are not effective at all. A placebo is an experimental control to rule out nonspecific factors such as spontaneous recovery because of the self-limiting nature of many illnesses, subjective feelings of improvement, subconscious conditioning, temporary but long lasting remission, rare spontaneous cure, misclassification of illness, etc. The placebo effect is observed mostly in illnesses that have a strong psychological component. In fact, a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine has cast doubt on whether there is a significant placebo effect at all, if one focuses on illnesses with good objective measures. Here is the link to that full paper: http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/344/21/1594 Here is its conclusion: We found little evidence in general that placebos had powerful clinical effects. Although placebos had no significant effects on objective or binary outcomes, they had possible small benefits in studies with continuous subjective outcomes and for the treatment of pain. Outside the setting of clinical trials, there is no justification for the use of placebos. Therefore, when a clinical trial leads to the finding that a drug works no better than a placebo, the trial is thought to be a failure, resulting in the rejection of that drug as a valid treatment. Evidently, Gilbert does not know this. If homeopathy works (say) in 50 percent of cases; why not give it to those patients. True science would / should work on identifying the OTHER fifty percent of patients that are unlikely to respond to (say) the 'chicken soup'. .Gilbert Lawrence Here again Gilbert unfortunately does not understand the simple fact that it is impossible to know before hand which patient would show a placebo effect, and which would require specific treatment. Please note the 8 hour window for pneumonia above. If you do not treat all elderly patients with pneumonia within 8 hours with antibiotics the chances of death over the next 30 days go way up. The sad part is even at the highest levels, (university/research labs) no efforts are made to answer difficult questions and seek honest answers. Despite the lofty statements, sciences often may have an economic angle. If we had been honest, we would have spent the last thirty years developing newer / better drugs for breast cancer; .Gilbert Lawrence Would anyone believe that a guy who makes the above absurd blanket statement is trying to advocate the use of untested homeopathic remedies, which have not progressed much beyond the 19th century? I would ask Gilbert to tell me what the efficacy of homeopathic therapy against breast cancer is. What percentage of such patients are cured by it, and what honest efforts have been made by homeopaths to test the efficacy of their old treatments and find new treatments over the last thirty years? The rest of what Gilbert has written regarding Goan tailors, etc. and comparison with ayurveda fails the laugh test. Cheers, Santosh --- On Sat, 4/18/09, Gilbert Lawrence gilbert2...@yahoo.com wrote: From the link that Santosh provided, the second paragraph states, The scientific evidence shows that homeopathy acts only as a placebo, and there is no scientific explanation of how it could work any other way. So, Homeopathy works ... not in all patients. But we do not know how i.e. no current explanation of the mechanism of action. The placebo effect is still an effect triggered by as yet unknown factor. The placebo effect lies beyond the body's existing ability to heal. The placebo effect may be mind over matter, or if one want to sound scientific, the immune

Dear Samir, I have not suggested that Mathany is communal. But, please do say, do you have any doubt who he would support in the event he wins? *“I don’t want to get involved in politics”* Dear Arwin, What axactly are you trying to tell GOANs by the above?? -We know that you have not filed your nomination papers for the 15th Lok Sabha Elections. -We know that you are not actively campaignning for Congress or BJP or UGDP etc. -We know too that you are not in Goa presently where the election fever is hotting up. -We know that you have been very very vocal about Goa's politics and Goa's politicians for far too long. And yet you prefer to tell us that you don't want to get involved in politics !! Pray what is it that you have been talking about for so long and doing so now, if it is not politics??? Or is it some kind of a 'bangra dance?? Please do not get me wrong here. I am not critiking you. All I am saying is that your line above is sending wrong signals to Goans who always but always have been comfortable to be 'ARMCHAIR POLITICIANS' whose 'APOLITICALITY' has done almost irreversible damage to Goa's fabric that you have been talking about for so long. I don't think Goans who are concerned and worried about Goa's well-being can afford to say *“I don’t want to get involved in politics”* They have to. There is no other alternative. Each and every one of us Goans must imparatively get INVOLVED IN GOA'S POLITICS if we want to SAVE GOA from the circling VULTURES. B/rgds floriano goasuraj PS: Your advice to South Goans to vote for Matanhy is fine. I too want them to vote for him. Let’s at least support specific candidates on issue basis only and change them if they don’t deliver. Yes, we have apprehensions about politicians but surely we can manage them wisely, to get our objectives done!! For instance, on the contestants for the South Goa Lok Sabha seat; I appreciate what critics say, but I still think that Mathany Saldanha is far better than the rest i.e. (1) Historically he is the only one who was the most vocal of the candidates, against various anti-goan initiatives e.g. SEZ’s, Draconian Regional Plan etc (2) His party manifesto is the most detailed comprehensive vs. all others, on not only the need, but also on the ways to protect/preserve Goa its identity. (3) We have given so many chances to the others and they have clearly let Goans down; so let us now change and give a chance to someone new!! (4) Other politicians falsely malign Mathany, by linking him to the so called communal elements; those very politicians tasted power by aligning themselves, with very elements that they now call “communal”. (5) Worst Case, even if Mathany is elected and does nothing; by just electing him we can send a strong message to the national parties that Goans cannot be taken for granted and it’s high time they start putting in measures to protect Goa, its identity and stop the destruction of our beautiful land. Goans please act before it is too late!! Arwin Mesquita (UAE)

[Goanet] Religion and Science
Dear Santosh, Thank you for your polite response and not knit-picking my post. Let me answer your questions: SH: Are you claiming that Christian priests and ministers, Muslim mullahs and imams, and Hindu bhots and swamis study science and scientific method as part of their theological curriculum? If so, could you please let me know the name of at least one science textbook that they are required to read. GL: Theology is a required curriculum subject that Catholic priests study. Fr. Ivo can give you a list of simplified and high-level theological books and other books on logic and deductions. Please tell us the names of five theological books you have studied (not just read)? I look forward to your reply. SH: Can you please explain how religion can be a scientific endeavor with at least one specific example? GL: Here may be the problem - Semantics! Please read my definition of scientific inquiry. Please ask questions ABOUT religion instead of trying to provide answers TO religion. I think religion has plenty to do with individual and social behavior. Yes, there are anecdotal exceptions to the rule. Demagogues love to quote these anecdotal cases. SH: The problem is not the past but what is being done in the present - the fact that outdated ancient medical practices such as Ayurveda and Homeopathy are being practiced unchanged and untested at the present time. GL: The NCI (National Cancer Institute) in the USA has multimillion dollar research studies on Alternative Medicine. After making sure there is no infection, my patients of prostate cancer with urinary symptoms are recommend, plenty of fluid intake and Cranberry juice (from the grocery shelf) along with radiation for their cancer.. About seventy percent have good relief of their urinary symptoms. The remainder get medications after a three day trial of Cranberry Juice. There are therapeutic benefits to massage, acupuncture, manipulation, exercise, etc. When osteopathic medicine first started (by an allopathic doctor), allopathic / scientific medicine rejected it. But there is definitely a role for manipulation in patient care. Similalry 'cognitive therapy' may have a role in preventing and treating Alzheimer's and other neurological disorders. Perhaps you can write on the scientifically proven (with EEG and MRI studies) effects of meditation - mind-altering technique and the effects of the same on the body. In this regard, likely you have read the works of neuroscientist Richard Davidson of the University of Wisconsin. Here is a non-scientific web link for those interested: http://meditation-health.suite101.com/article.cfm/meditation_changes_the_brain http://www.healthy.net/scr/Interview.asp?Id=306 It is said that among all illnesses presenting to a Primary Care Physician, about 70 percent are self-limiting (self-healing). We would all agree that in these situations, allopathy, homeopathy, Ayurveda or 'chicken soup' should do equally well. I will grant you that medications may make the recovery process faster. Of the remainder, about ten percent of illnesses are too far advanced and irreversible for any treatment to significantly help. Perhaps here we can improve the quality of life. These are chronic illness and terminal illness. Skilled medical intervention really helps in about twenty percent of illnesses - but here it can make the difference between life and death. The important point is: All of us should understand and accept the limitations of what we do. I have said on this forum before: A good surgeon knows how to operate. A great surgeon knows when not to operate. Regards, GL

[Goanet] RELIGION AND SCIENCE
Dear Santosh, Science is no match for religioud belief. We go to temples, churches and pray to a particular deity or saint, with a mind set. Human mind is very complex and if one truly believes the favour will be granted or certain ailment will be healed, it is possible it might. As an example, I firmly believe if you pray to Saint Antony, to help find a lost item, there are 99.9% chances he will help you find it. It has happened to me. Similarly devotees make a vow and if the favour is granted, they will fulfill what they promised in return. See the several Hindu devotees donate huge amounts in gratitude at the Temples. Similarly, a honest. god fearing Homeopathic practitioner, mostly does it as a social service, expecting noting in return unless he is commercial minded. I have known, for example, my grand mother treated Jaundice but did not expect any thing in return, but the cured patient some timesused to come and thank her. That's all. In the bargain, I had to go hunting for all the herbs, shrubs, and roots she wanted. So do not be skeptical but if you want to do scientific study, observe such practitioner. Do not pressurise Fr. Ivo. He has written in good faith. It is time, we learn from our elders what they have learned from their elders, because some times (ZAD/PALO) herbs and shrubs do cure certain diseases, but it takes time. At the same time, let me tell you, allopathic medicines are habit forming and seem not to work after prolonged use and in that case, the physician will prescribe higher dosage. [Goanet] Matanhy, the best choice
Dear fellow Goans, As the final countdown is nearing this Parliamentary election, there are bound to be “ifs” and “buts” in the voters mind which is quite understandable. A lot has been said and published about the candidates on offer through the media and cybernet. For South Goa parliamentary constituency, Matanhy Saldanha appears to be the only politician with a vision, who does his homework well and pursues his goals with conviction of purpose. His mission during the last 35 years and leadership to peoples’ struggles speaks volumes of his honesty and selfless devotion to Goa and its people. Through this election campaign Matanhy has already achieved in making his demand for Special status, popular with the people and finding favour with all the major parties contesting. Moreover, every issue Matanhy has raised and fought has been taken on board by successive Governments in the past, and it is interesting to see now too, the Congress and BJP camps are chanting the slogans of “Special status” for Goa and CRZ issues, etc. though not out of belief, but more as an election gimmick, beware. The Congress knows how easily the Goan electorate can be fooled, like Eduardo Faleiro did during the Konkan railway realignment agitation and Sardinha whose reputation is not any better, even after more than 30 years in power, must be told in no uncertain terms, that Goa is faced withmore important issues that need attention on priority, than his nonsense of legalizing “Dhirios” . With crucial issues like CRZ, SEZ , Mega Housing and illegal Mining to name a few, haunting the aam aadmi, the Congress cannot be trusted at all, and since the BJP - Modi brand hidden agenda is alien to peace loving Goans, the only choice is ‘KATOR’ in the safe hands of Matanhy Saldanha. Matanhy therefore is the best choice by miles May God save our Goa. Geraldo Oliveira

Can Digamber come out publicly and tell the world how much money he has made in the last couple of years ? What has Sardinha done for the people ? Can he come out and list his achievements ? It is not that Valimki doesnt know all of the above. regards, Samir
[Goanet] Film: Das Avatar
Das Avatar We watched the movie ‘Das Avtar’ this late night show. With Kamla Hassan , Jayapradha, Malika Sherawat etc The audience was about 25 this time at Samrat including Mr. Mrs. Sandesh Prabudesai of Prudent Media Long 3 hour movie, it was Ok in the beginning but later it was boring specially the hero and young heroine playing with ‘Bhagvan ki Murti’ (Statue of Hindu deity). To save the dangerous contents (deadly biological weapon in box as small as a match box) . It looks like as if they were playing with the ‘Murti’ throwing it to one another, some time in the sand, sometimes in the junk trawlers, packing it in air cargo, then again in ice box/container, the villain wearing it on shoulder strap etc. Strangely, I guess there were no complaints about the ‘Murti’ by the so called Hindu Fundamentalist. May be it did not hurt their religious sentiments this time. There was little bit of Mr. George Bush, Sadam Hussaim, India’s Jailaitha, Manmohan Singh, Tamilnadu CM etc etc. One must not miss the end part of film where Tsunami with giant waves shown with destruction of properties and mankind. One Trawler seen hanging up on top of the ‘South India Church’ looks like Vailankani church near Madras.. In the beginning king ordered to remove a giant Hindu deity from a temple and dump it in the ocean together with its poojari Kamla Hassan. In the end the same Murti shown thrown ashore by the powerful Tsunami. At first, I recongnised Kamla Hassan as double role then soon treble role, then again I suspected an old wrinkled faced lady as Kamla Hassan too. Then again a Sardaji and again one darker skinned… So how many Kamla Hassans? Not just 2 or 5 or 7 but 10 The title of the film is ‘Das Avatar’ remember? Check it out here all 10 Kamla Hassan with 10 different roles. http://kollywoodhots4you.blogspot.com/2008/06/kamal-hassans-das-avatar.html I would give the movie 2.5 stars out of 5, but the tsunami episode/scenes got itself a half star extra. As for Kamla Hassan, he is seen in (1981) film ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye with Rati Agnohotri. Again, (1983) SADMA with Sri Devi. This movie really brought down tears more than once and I could not get over it at least for a week. Note: Some of you may think why bolywood movies are discussed here? Well, during my time, for us, there was only one entertainment i.e. Bollywood movies. I may have seen more film in Cine Lata, followed by Cine Vasco, Cine Vishant, cine Metropole, Cine Elmonte and Blue Pearl (all fromm Margao Vasco only). There were no TV/video/DVD and day time Tiatr that time. If not face disqualification (as in the past) Matanhy may have fought several battles but he did so as Matanhy Saldanha or as GRE,GMAS etc not necessarily as UGDP For this Matanhy should have gone alone (as independent) and then it was upto to him who he supports. As said in the front page of latest GO, it does looks like 'Matanhy KATORFIED by UGDP' http://goanobserver.com/ Don't know as to why UGDP did not file similar disqualification against Babush, instead they let him go just like that. 19APR09 Dear Joe, Reading about Fozznem (see below) it looks like you've got the balls rolling, (I mean the cannon balls) which open up many questions which would show us Goans to be rather not too savvy with our Goan (Christian, Hindu and Moslem) culture. Why I say this? Let's see the Christian side first Can anyone explain why we have this Gon'nall (almost cannon-loud booms) during our Salves and Vespers, from which we get proverbs like Filluchea kusthar Fozznem or Fest korta Ganv, Pirjentichem Nanv? Tip: Has it anything to do with our colonial past? And talking of Festas could anyone explain why we call it the Feast of St.Francis Xavier when actually it's the day of his death? We don't have the same appellation for Good Friday, the day of Christ's death, do we? Tip. Has it anything to do with our Hindu past? Which in turn takes us into the Church of Bom Jesus itself, (it's like panning of your camera, Joe) to ask: whose statue do we see in the main altar? ( only one guess, please) And while tarrying on the sacrosanct and historic grounds of Old Goa please allow me to ask just three more questions which occupy my mind: What significance has the Feast of St. Catherine for us Goans (25th November) and which St Catherine are we referring to (there are several St Cathrines) here? Two. Did that epic Portuguese writer Luis de Camoes (Os Lusiadas) live in Goa along with his friend Garcia de Orta (medico) and who was this Goan girl he (Camoes) loved called Barbara who had captured his heart (aquela cativa que me tem cativo)? Was she his concubine or did they live in connubial harmony? You can take as many shots as you like here. Finally. A simple question, is there a Church of SFX in Portugal? Of course these are heritage questions pertaining to our (Christian, Hindu, Moslem) historical links and has per se nothing to do with present day Portugal. We also have our historical links to Hindu and Muslim India, where I have collected and collated in a set of questions and answers for my book Tun Sang Maca which I intend to get going sometime after I get clearance from the Govts religious authorities concerned and after hearing more from your dear readers about some of the question that will interest us all as Christians, Hindus and Moslems.. I don't wish my people to call me a Gon'nall if you know what that means. All in good fun. Kind regards. P.S. This is no promo for my book.It wants to do with the pen what you're doing with your camera. Re: [Goanet] Goan writer
Epitácio Pais was born in 1926, and is now 83 years old. He started writing in the late 40s, published his short stories in the O Heraldo in the 50s, and, in the 60s, transmitted them over the All India Radio. The high point of his career came in the early 70s, when 13 of his short stories were compiled in a book and published under the title Os Javalis de Codval (Lisbon: Editorial Futura 1973). Goan short story writing in Portuguese, never prolific, was initiated by Júlio Gonçalves (1846-1896) in the late 19th century. Inspired by the matchless style of the great Portuguese novelist Eça de Queirós (1846-1900), it attained maturity in the satirical short stories of José da Silva Coelho (1889-1944) in the early 20th century. Finally, it can be said to have climaxed in the late 20th century in the work of Epitácio Pais. Manuel de Seabra, the acute historian of Goan writing in Portuguese, compares Epitácio to the great 19th century Russians like Turgenev (1818-1883) and even to Dostoievski (1821-1881) himself! But Epitácio lives, and knows about his own life better than any one else. Break your silence and speak Epitácio, we are all ears!

[Goanet] Chicken soup in Anjuna
To test the theory of allopathic and alternative medicines I went to Anjuna this morning. Mr. Lobo just passed away yesterday and so we administered a variety of allopathic drugs with chicken soup to try and revive him. A lot of drugs supplied by the greedy big-pharma companies were tried. We even gave him drugs for diseases he did not have or die of, in the hope something would work. No luck, nothing worked. Dead as a doornail. Then we gave him homeopathic chicken soup. He stirred. Either that or the big trucks illegally scooping sand from Anjuna beach caused the earth to move and so did Mr. Lobo. Next we gave him ayurvedic chicken soup and he awoke (I am not kidding) and said he wanted to clarify that his ex-sister-in-law Mrs. D'Souza gets no property from his will. Unfortunately, Mrs. D'Souza was standing next to him and slapped him hard and he died again. Moral of the story: if you are going to have ayurvedic chicken soup and come back from the dead, do not have a disgruntled ex-relative around. Given this is Goa and nothing is straight-forward, we have to test again, next time in South Goa. After the elections, we plan to visit Quepem and try our allopathic, homeopathic, ayurvedic chicken-soup experiments, assuming there are any chickens left. Possibly our 'fowl' political candidates might have given all the chickens away as voter gifts (bribes) in the Lok Sabha elections. So now you know the truth. George
[Goanet] Chicken - soup
In case of pneumonia, reserve the antibiotics only to those who do not respond to 'chicken soup'. ..Dr. Gilbert Lawrence Dr. Santosh Helekar wrote: I want to ask Gilbert if, as a physician, he would recommend that a person who has been diagnosed with pneumococcal pneumonia be treated with chicken soup alone. The standard of care today mandates that an elderly pneumonia patient be treated with modern antibiotics within 8 hours to substantially reduce the chances of 30 day mortality. Folks, In my experience, most Goans with pneumonia will go to the doctor only AFTER they figure out chicken soup is not working on them. It is funny (to me) to find out that there are Goan doctors who will even contemplate 'chicken soup' as medication. Mervyn1650Lobo __ Be smarter than spam. Eugene Correia wrote: I received an email from a Goan Overseas Association (GOA) Toronto executive member informing me that there is talk of Kevin Saldanha running for president of the association. No doubt would probably want to win the elections on the false canard that the convention, of which he Eugene, of which he WHAT? I spoke to Kevin today. Kevin was holidaying in the US. As usually, you put your spin on everything that is fed to you with out even trying to check the facts. The most recent news I heard from Toronto is that Kevin called the Goan Netters Association of Toronto (GNAT) and allegedly dissolved without inviting the president Francis Rodriques and secretary Bosco D'Mello. Eugene, who is feeding you this rubbish? The above info is a complete fabrication. Francis is the founder-president and the man who originally thought of and worked to form the association. Besides, most constitutions of association gives the right to call a meeting to the secretary. On what basis Kevin called the meeting is a moot point. Once again, the info you have is completely false. There is also talk that Francis has initiated legal proceedings against Kevin. Perhaps Francis himself or some GNAT members on this forum can clarify. This too, is news to me. Once again, who is feeding you this info? I attend all GNAT meetings and everything goes on in an orderly manner. The GOA AGM is on April 19. Goanetters in Toronto should make it a point to attend and vote for Oscar. Oscar was elected, unopposed, today. He promised that this would be his last term. If you, or anyone else you know is interested in running for the GOA President or any other position, call me. Re: [Goanet] LOK SABHA Elections : MY Choice
Samir has not understood the thread of floriano's thinking. Time has come when the best candidate ( in this case surely Matanhy for South) must declare his preferences now so that the voters know how he will vote in case there is a vote to prove the strenght in the house. India has been given/declared just two probables for the Prime Minister's post. Surely there are many deserving others who could would and could be prefered once election results are declared. But floriano is working on the premise of the two probales already declared. If not Manmohan Singh, it could be any body else. Floriano will be happy if it is not a Congress lead government. India requires a change and Congress requires to cool itself in the opposition benches. If not Congress, it must also not be the BJP aka NDA. What floriano is saying is that Matanhy must tell us if he will root for Advani as the PM if he is on the choice. That will make everything clear to start with. No hidden agendas. And there is no doubt in my mind that Matanhy is the best between all on display excluding just one. Independent Ms. Salunke. It takes guts to do what she is doing. And I like what she is doing. And YES, we are going to choose our two best representatives to send to Delhi. But these two best representatives must definately tell us if they are going to choose LK Advani or someone else to sit on the chair of the Prime Minister of India. It will be better to eat a lot of salt in advance rather than wait for the promised 'malai' later which might not be fortcoming at all. floriano goasuraj - Original Message - From: Samir Kelekar samir_kele...@yahoo.com To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Sent: Sunday, April 19, 2009 10:59 PM Subject: [Goanet] LOK SABHA Elections : MY Choice Floriano writes: This 15th. Lok Sabha Elections has nothing to do with Shripad Naik, OR Jitendra Deshprabhu Or Sardinha, Or Matanhy Saldanha Or whoever. It is either Manmohan Singh or LK Advani. There is a saying in Konkani --- Xitafundem mith khai naka. Roughly translated it means -- Dont eat salt before the rice -- or some such thing. Floriano insults Indian people when he says that the choice is between Manmohan and Advani. The voting is yet to take place; there are tons of candidates for the Indian people to choose from and in all their wisdom let us hope that they will choose the right candidates. Mathany is one of them. How can one be sure before hand that there are only two choices for the PM's post ? Not just that, who knows what power any upcoming PM will have? Our current choice is to elect our best representative. And surely Mathany is the best. There is nothing ambivalent in Mathany saying that he will decide the PM based on the one who will do the best for Goa Whatever one may say, one thing surely one can be assured --- no one can do worse than Sardinha, and the other jokers we have elected in the past! In other words, Mathany definitely deserves a chance much more over these other jokers (for want of a better word). regards, Samir
Re: [Goanet] Religion and Science
Deo Gratias for JGR and her emotionally intelligent response on Religion Science. Over the past couple of decades we know so much more than before, but people become evermore polarised, overly-aggressive and paranoid, or am I talking about the warring governments/nations of the world? Is there enough love or understanding in the world? JGR mentions We Indians are truly lucky and blessed, because we have friends and relatives of different religious beliefs who will pray for our good health, when we fall sick. I campaigned for affordable living and if 60% of Indian families cannot afford over-priced, over-hyped allopathic medicines, thank God they can get homeopathic, ayurvedic, herbal, etc. Reference Goa, was I a fool to fall in love with the land? Are the ex-pats who feel they have been cheated in Goa got it right? I met a Goan woman in February whose family earned income over 10K rupees per month, and yet that was not enough to satisfy her. Then I met a nurse bringing up 2 kids without any help from her estranged husband. She earned 3K rupees, about half of the other woman's salary, for a hard slog, with many more hours and weekend work. It is only by that comparison, I began to understand how Goans have to manage on low incomes, compared to US, Canadians, OZ European residents. In fact, UK does not have any magic potion, we live in fear of what the rabid party political system will do next. We ought to be a rich country, but I believe we are bankrupt, morally, ethically and financially. Our wealth has been siphoned into the wrong pockets. Is that the same situation in Goa, and India? Why is there such a shortage of empathy towards our fellow man? I feel shame for the torture, kidnap and rendition of suspect detainees, whereas others feel such inhuman means justify the end. Is Obama comfortable sitting on the fence, boycotting the UN sponsored racism conference, knowing that Israel US have blemished records? He has much on his hands, but I cannot condone the bogus war on terror, or the excessive force it has unleashed. Clive Stafford-Smith, an English lawyer, has given his life to defend US prisoners on death Row detainees as well. I know and greatly admire several other eminent English lawyers who take hopeless cases and sometimes win justice, eg. for an Iraqui widow and her two young sons, left fatherless when UK soldiers beat her hotel receptionist husband to death in prison. It seems our governments and fundamentalists of any kind will not give peace a chance. Rita Grootendorst
