August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary On seeing these two photos, my 1st thought was, do these cops know how to swim? What are these guys doing on this boat, in their uniform and without the life jackets? Hope they can stop some defaulters by blowing their whistles! How long before the families of top Goa cops get joyrides on the Mandovi? We have to wait and see. Hopefully, Joe will be able to capture those pictures too! [Goanet] ST & OBCs reservations
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary The recent Supreme Court’s ruling on reservation for Schedule Tribes and OBCs which appeared in the local dailies on 18th August, 2009, is a welcome decision. The ruling states that a migrant SC or ST cannot claim a reserved status in OBC quota in another State. Many migrants have usurped Goan jobs reserved for OBCs in government and semi-government offices, etc. So too have students from outside States occupied seats in our professional colleges. It is now for our Labour, Employee’s, Student’s Unions, etc., to take up this issue and be vigilant in future. [Goanet] Righteous Christians?
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary NT report reads, "Campaigners for transparency and accountability in > management of church properties are expected to meet the > Archbishop soon. . Present at this meet were at least 40 persons. Prominent > among them being Ms Libby Lobo Sardessai, Mr Flaviano Dias, > Fr Romaldo De Souza, Mr Bernardo De Souza, Dr > Teotonio De Souza, Fr Mouzinho Athaide, Ms Devika Sequeira, > Mr Fredrick Noronha, ex-MLA, Mr Victor Gonsalves, > and ex-MLA, Mr Radharao." Can someone throw some light on whether these elements have ever been concerned about the welfare of the church in the past. What is their sudden concern for church properties? If they were, some of them would not have given consent to the communal CD during the BJP rule. Names are no pointer to being christian or not. Shantaram Kamat may also be a christian in today's era. The MP behind it all is alleged to have been a chamcha of Indira Gandhi and incited her to raid Gandhian institutions during the emergency wherein several manuscripts of historical importance were destroyed in those police raids. This non-resident Goan from Delhi who cannot reside without some government posting is not like the son of Goa, Planner Mr. Edgar Ribeiro who gave consultancy for a token fee of Re1/-. Before demanding transparency and accountability from the church, the NRI Commissioner and his band of self-proclaimed righteous campaigners need to give an account about themselves to the Goan pub lic. Some of them may be wanting to take away the church properties and give it alternate space in the cyber world. While there are so many pressing social issues confronting Goa that needs urgent attention, it is interesting that some people are distracting the public on church properties. -soter
[Goanet] Italian Reality TV Series
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary Folks, Next month a TV crew with a group of Italian celebrities, some of them notorious, arrives in Goa: La Nazione (26 Aug), Il Giornale (25 Aug) etc. Italy's Channel 5 is to broadcast a new series, The Tribe, which will be aired in prime time from 16 September for eight weeks. The 13 competitors will leave for Goa after a brief survival course in Rome. They will have to eat, work, sleep and live like the local population and survive! http://quotidianonet.ilsole24ore.com/2009/08/26/222865-ecco_tutti_nomi.shtml I do hope that none of them gets conned into buying property. Yes George? The Italian media are giving the series much attention but my Italian is not up to the mark. Vivian, are you there? Eddie Fernandes
Re: [Goanet] Goan associations
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary Eugene Correia wrote: As regards Goan associations, even the Toronto-based Goan Overseas Association (GOA) is facing membership problems. The number of members has dwindled down to about 700 from at least more than a 1000 some years ago. So, what is the way forward? Is George's suggestions valid in the context of what the GOA is facing? The GOA has tried and keeps on trying to have all kinds of events and initiatives to make the young Goans aware of Goan culture and heritage. Is is having little or no effect. I was told that the Viva Goa soccer tournament had two Punjabi teams The prospect of GOA shutting down is staring in its face. The membership now has mostly patrons and life members. The number of these two groups is getting less with deaths. It's sad but true that Goan associations everywhere face the same problem of survival. == == == My two cents worth and this relates only to Goan Associations Overseas. In random order: 1: Every organisation depends upon the young folks participating, and taking the lead. 2: It appears that whenever somebody tries to take the lead or organise a function, someone comes and blows that function apart. Let us, if we can, take the example of last year's Goan function in Toronto. Despite ALL the good work done by those who participated, just look at the damage done by a set of scurrilous (IMHO) articles plastered all over GoaNet about two of the main organisers of that function + the totally unnecessary "introduction" (for want of a better word) of the couple's daughter. Did the alleged journalist even bother to speak to the couple involved? 3: What are the chances that this couple and their children (and other Goans involved in the organisation of that event) will participate in the organisation of any future Goan events. 4: What are the chances that ANY other self respecting and respected Goan in Toronto will take such an undertaking after that absolutely disgraceful attack on the couple? 5: If there was a problem with the organisation of that function, could it NOT have been dealt with internally FIRST? 6: Is it too much to ask that the person who writes this 'tabloid' stuff, asks all the key players before writing? 7: What was the idea? To build the Goan organisation ..or to break it down? I will omit at this time the type of chicannery which went on when the Lion hearted Rene Baretto tried to develop Goans International. We got wind of this undercurrent ONLY through two misdirected emails (reached us accidentaly instead of just circulating in the Goan cyber-underground). To his credit, Rene continues giving his 110% to the cause. 8: Goans must accept that imposing 'Goan culture' and this 'S-Konkani' will NOT work with the young Goans. If the parents speak in One Konkani and the children are taught this different Konkani . it will just be another subject to learn and forget like Sanskrit and Latin. 9: In general, I believe that educated Goans have lost the personal civility that educated Goans displayed a few decades ago. It is almost that - after a few drinks - we are gone hunting. I do not see us impressing the youth with this type of Goan culture. They might as well look elsewhere. 10: As a young person, I would love to go back home to Goa. It was clean, quiet and peaceful. Sure the only lights we had in the villages, were the odd Alladin lamps, several Petromaxes, the Oil lamps and the fire flies. But it was Home without this destructive concretization, corruption choas and filth. Why would any overseas young person want to travel to Goa except to see the grand-parents and remaining relatives? 11: When one goes to a Goan function, what kind of music does one hear? A fake, disaffinado version of some old Portuguese tune or some Bhangra music. Do tell me what it is in the music that will attract overseas Goans .in terms of Classic and well conducted music in the league of Maestro Antonio Figueiredo? (The good Victor Rangel-Ribeiro's recent stint having been noted) 12: As young Goans travel and live abroad, they are likely to meet young people in the communities they live. They are likely to develop relationships there and marry there. That is beneficial mixing of the gene pool. Imagine the gene pool if people from Carabolim (where we hail from) married only others from Carambolim ...and so on. The important thing to ask is the following: Are we displaying the decency, class and civility in our inter-personal relationships enough to attract the non-Goan spouses of our children towards Goan culture? . For now jc

[Goanet] Why we believe in lies?
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary Date: Tue, 25 Aug 2009 18:25:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Gilbert Lawrence Goanet sees some endless discussion about some event in history or belief. Here is an article by a medical writer in Newsweek that may provide answers / explanation why some people believe in lies. A short relevant paragraph is posted below. Readers are encouraged to read the entire article, the link to which is provided. Regards, GL = http://www.newsweek.com/id/213625?from=rss Excerpt: Some people form and cling to false beliefs about health-care reform (or Obama's citizenship) despite overwhelming evidence thanks to a mental phenomenon called motivated reasoning, says sociologist Steven Hoffman, visiting assistant professor at the University at Buffalo. "Rather than search rationally for information that either confirms or disconfirms a particular belief," he says, "people actually seek out information that confirms what they already believe." And God knows, in the Internet age there is no dearth of sources to confirm even the most ludicrous claims (my favorite being that the moon landings were faked). "For the most part," says Hoffman, "people completely ignore contrary information" and are able to "develop elaborate rationalizations based on faulty information." [end of excerpt] Mario observes: The "relevant paragraph" is hardly a promising insight to the rest of the article. Nor is the peculiar suggestion by Gilbert that "some people believe in lies". Does anyone consciously "believe in lies"? Or is what some people believe construed by people like Gilbert as "lies"? My response simply picks key attitudinal clues from Gilbert's post. If I find other aspects in the article worthy of comment I will do so separately. Writing an article in NEWSWEEK - which openly supports President Hussein and his government-run health care system in its editorials - citing "Some people form and cling to false beliefs about health-care reform (or Obama's citizenship) despite overwhelming evidence..." is a false premise and a reflection of an elitist attitude by the author of the article who implies that HE knows the "overwhelming evidence" and others do not. Poppycock. Here's why. 1. The vast majority of Americans do not cling to false insinuations about Obama's citizenship. Obama has contributed to those who do by keeping his official birth certificate sealed. 2. The vast majority of Americans do not believe the moon landings or the sneak attack on 9/11 were faked. 3. The "false beliefs about health care reform" were directly caused by a barrage of bald faced falsehoods by President Hussein about the legislation, which he was DEMANDING in mid-July be passed in TWO WEEKS before anyone had even had a chance to read the legislation. Then, after people read the bill, we found that the details in the drafts of the bill were not what he had been telling us. This is why his popularity is plummeting as people lose trust in his words and realize to their horror that he did not have a single legislative or executive achievement to his name before he ran for President. 4. The belief in "Death Panels", even though no legislation will call it that, was derived from reports from other countries with socialized medicine and how they ration care and from the actual Death Panel in the State of Oregon's socialized system which refused to pay for a not-so-old woman's chemotherapy but offered to pay for her euthanasia. So, which is the lie, the fact that there is no "Death Panel" mentioned in the drafts, or the fact that socialized systems have panels of bureaucrats that can sentence hapless patients to death? http://www.dickmorris.com/blog/2009/08/18/its-all-a-death-panel-the-truth-about-obamacare/ 5. The belief that Catholic hospitals and physicians will be forced to provide abortion and contraceptive services comes from the fact that there is no mention of these services in the bill and no exemption for conscientious objectors written into the current drafts. Courts have previously ruled that such exemptions must be specifically written into a health care plan. So, some will truthfully say that abortion is not mentioned in the drafts, while others will just as truthfully point to previous legal precedents. 4. The belief that a government run health care system will be an unmitigated disaster is based on the overwhelming evidence of every other government run system in the country, from the Post Office to Amtrak to the Ponzi scheme called Social Security to Medicare to Medicaid to the VA, none of which are self sustaining without increasing amounts of taxpayer funding. Contributing evidence comes to us from the horror stories from Canada and Britain several of which have bee
Re: [Goanet] The Pope's moral blunders on outsourcing S A Aiyar(Times of India)
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary Date: Tue, 25 Aug 2009 11:35:49 -0700 From: "isouza" There is no need to be a professional economist or politician to know what it is dishonest behaviour in economic or political fields. The Holy Father will never speak on economics or politics without consulting experts in economics and politics... Mario responds: Poppycock. Whether after consultation or not, it is dishonest to pretend to address "human development" while harming working people by preaching against outsourcing. Fr. Ivo wrote: You can see how well the Goan politicians are doing without even S.S.C... They would have been successful and really responsible to the Goan people if they had followed the principles laid by the Church in her Social Encyclicals... Mario responds: Anyone who finds outsourcing beneficial in their business but is not doing so because of the Pope is harming his or her business, by definition. Fr. Ivo wrote: That is what John Paul II did throughout his life, and the married couples are grateful to him. The Youth still remember him. Mario responds: This must have been like the blind leading the blind. I remember John Paul II well, because he did not confront the pedophile priest issue until it was too little, too late, and was more concerned about the pedophiles than the innocent victims who were scarred for life. Fr. Ivo wrote: The Holy Father is right, whereas Mario is wrong. Benedict XVI did not "end" outsourcing ("if outsourcing were to end"), but "guided" it. Read the text before you criticise. Mario responds: You have told me what the text said. If anyone followed his "guidance" at their cost, he did not do them any favors, and harmed those who would have received the outsourced jobs as well.. Fr. Ivo wrote: Excerpt: "...Moreover, the so-called outsourcing of production can weaken the company's sense of responsibility towards the stakeholders - namely the workers, the suppliers, the consumers, the natural environment and broader society - in favour of the shareholders, who are not tied to a specific geographical area and who therefore enjoy extraordinary mobility". Mario responds: This makes no sense whatsoever. The shareholders own the company and no other "stakeholders" would benefit if it were not for them. So what if they have geographical mobility? The fact is that they have invested in a particular business which has to maximize its resources so that all the "stakeholders" can benefit in the long run. Fr. Ivo wrote: In short, as I said earlier, "Benedict XVI is not against outsourcing, but is appealing to responsibility towards all the stakeholders over mere profitability of shareholders"... Mario responds: There would be no successful "stakeholders" without successful "shareholders" making "mere" profits. Memo to Goanetters: Please note that Fr. Ivo and Pope's JP II and Benny have never had to make anything so crass as "mere" profits. So they can BS to their hearts content and pretend as if they know something about economics. This whole encyclical proves otherwise. Fr. Ivo wrote: The Vatican is not hampering business, but helping it to go the right way... Mario responds: As a businessman myself, the Vatican can PLEASE keep it's "guidance" to itself and use it in any businesses it owns. Listening to their non-expert advice would hamper my business. Fr. Ivo wrote: Unfortunately the Church cannot do it. Let her do what she is doing at present... Mario responds: Poppycock. If they can provide "guidance" to businesses they can do the same to governments. If they followed my advice more people and more "stakeholders" would benefit, which would also mean more donations for you and them:-)) Remember this. The more profits businessmen make the better for all you Padres. Where do you think your donations come from? Fr. Ivo wrote: Service is the key-word for every business company. Let them do it correctly and help those who are in need. The Church refuses to accept "black money" from the "dishonest stewards"... Mario responds: We don't need the Vatican to tell us that service is the key to our businesses. That's like telling us that the sun rises in the East. Very interesting but we knew that already. How does someone who has never run a business know what is "correct"? If you think the Church does not accept money from "dishonest stewards" you know even less than I thought. The biggest individual donors to the Church in Italy as well as the USA are Mafia Dons. They think they are buying advance tickets to good seats in the next world:-))

[Goanet] Ted Kennedy Dead
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary Date: Wed, 26 Aug 2009 04:00:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Gilbert Lawrence Likely?most goanetters may know the sad news on the passing away of Senator Edward Kennedy from his Brain tumor. This death and that of many others, destroys the myth commonly heard, "In America today, death is an option" Mario responds: If death in America was an option wouldn't the life span be much higher? Besides, isn't a "commonly heard myth" an oxymoron? I have lived in America for 38 years with and among physicians and have never heard anyone say, "In America today, death is an option". Any American who says anything like this would need their head examined or be in a straitjacket already. However, there are some advantages to living in America: http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba649 As far as Ted Kennedy was concerned, the American expertise he received by all accounts is why he lived far longer than his initial diagnosis and prognosis indicated. May his tortured soul rest in peace.

Re: [Goanet] Goan associations
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary As regards Goan associations, even the Toronto-based Goan Overseas Association (GOA) is facing membership problems. The number of members has dwindled down to about 700 from at least more than a 1000 some years ago. I was told that at the boat cruise event for youth, most of the youth were non-members. When a committee member asked them why they are not becoming members the person was told that they would rather prefer to attend the events than become full-time members. The events hosted and organized by the GOA are either losing money or just breaking even. The association is facing financial constraints but continues to put on a bold face. The future does not look bright. Besides the second- or third-generation Goans not becoming members, they are only bringing about an early death of GOA. It is sad scenario but there is little the committee can do. I was told that the Viva Goa soccer tournament had two Punjabi teams. The six-a-side inter-village tournament, which was part of the Viva Goa celebrations, was supposed to promote Goan talent. Why the tournament was opened to outside teams is beyond me. It is my understanding that the sports committee was making its own rules. It was also found that the committee was discrimanatory. It permitted outside teams but would not allow one team to have non-GOam members play for it. I think a couple of years ago, non-Goans were made "instant" GOA members on payment of 25 dollars. Most of them never renewed their memberships after the tournament. I can understand if the tournament is "invitational" and non-Goan teams are allowed to participate. The executive committee is finding it hard to find ways to solve the membership issue. Most of the Goans who migrated from the Middle East have kept away from the association. They have found their own group or groups and seem quite content with it. So, what is the way forward? Is George's suggestions valid in the context of what the GOA is facing? The GOA has tried and keeps on trying to have all kinds of events and initiatives to make the young Goans aware of Goan culture and heritage. Is is having little or no effect. The prospect of GOA shutting down is staring in its face. The membership now has mostly patrons and life members. The number of these two groups is getting less with deaths. It's sad but true that Goan associations everywhere face the same problem of survival. Eugene Correia __ Yahoo! Canada Toolbar: Search from anywhere on the web, and bookmark your favourite sites. Re: [Goanet] Abdul Kalam's Letter to every Indian
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary Date: Tue, 25 Aug 2009 11:55:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Anthony M Barreto Abdul Kalam: "I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary." Tony: Not a bad achievement to match the Hamas. But I think the Tel Aviv sub lacked in news sense. If that happens in India the sub and the chief sub on the night shift will get the kick and rightly so because a newspaper is supposed to be objective in its job. Mario observes: I agree with Tony here. Perhaps the Israelis are just too numb after 62 years of relentless attacks. Abdul Kalam: "In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime." Tony: In India we read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime because that is the primary concern here. In health care, where is the system? And it is not just about international terrorism. In fact it is more about internal warfare. Mario observes: Kalam is wrong based on my observations. Newspapers everywhere lead with articles about "death, sickness, terrorism, crime..." American journalists have a well known saying about what gets reported first, "If it bleeds, it leads." Abdul Kalam: "Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - ?YOURS?. Give him a face - ?YOURS?." Tony: Singapore and Dubai have rulers and administrators who are serious about the rules of their countries. If I know I cannot bribe an RTA Officer I will dare not try. But if I know I will never get the licence without a bit of compromise on my beloved Dubai and Singapore ideals I will be compelled to chose the Indian way to spare myself the harrassment and agony of going against a treasured tradition of the country. Mario responds: Tony is correct about Singapore and Dubai, which are also tiny city states and dictatorships with little tolerance for bad civic behavior. However, Tony left out the rest of what Kalam said in this segment, which included London and Washington, Australia and NZ. The civic behavior Kalam mentioned was the focus of my post: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-August/182239.html The kind of civic behavior mentioned is also commonplace in the western democracies and in Taiwan and Thailand. This is what India and Indians need to work on in my opinion: a sense of personal civic responsibility, which is largely lacking in India. Just take the lack of consideration on the roads and it is the same attitude everywhere. Abdul Kalam: "What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU." Tony: Well I would recommend Dr Kalam something as simple as trying to get a birth certificate from Panjim as a resident of Canacona to get a taste of how impossible the system can be for somebody who is too stupid to stubbornly stick to his avowed principles. Mario observes: Tony is correct about how it works in India - people feel they have no choice but to go along and do whatever is necessary just to get done what would be routine in most developed countries where civic sense and consideration for others is the norm and small time corruption is minimal or even non-existent. Tony concludes: Dr Kalam or for that matter anyone else with a gift for words could use his pen to make an equally compelling case with as much rhetoric to suggest that the Indian political system has gone to the dogs beyond a point of salvation. And that it is certainly sensible to shut up and endure it as best as and as long as one can. Mario responds: I hope Tony is wrong when he says "the Indian political system has gone to the dogs beyond a point of salvation." though I can see why he thinks so, and it obviously seems that way to anyone who has to deal with the system in India on a day-to-day basis. I have been disappointed that other Indian leaders have not made an issue of civic behavior, so I was surprised to see that Kalam had done so, but without any follow up or interest shown by other leaders, Tony's sad conclusion may well be the correct one. The opinion leaders on Goanet have been concentrating on other issues which may be more important in the scheme of things.

[Goanet] Goanet's 15 years of existence.
August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary As Maurice D'Mello suggests, let us for a change carry out a worthwhile project on Goanet to celebrate its 15 years rather than use this wonderful medum for non productive purposes. My suggestion : Let us create a 'Hall of Fame' for eminent Goans. Let Goanetters decide on the criteria for including a name to this list. Suggestions for inclusion of names should also include reasons for inclusion. Let there be a panel to finalize the list. This could be put up on the goanet.org website. Am I expecting too much from the respected members of this forum or can we for once rise to the occasion and show that we can carry out a worthwhile and useful project - a sort of Goanet Wiki. Could some netters volunteer to form the panel? I would be very willing to collate the names which are suggested. Netters are free to modify or outright reject this proposal. If you in your wisdom decide to reject it, then please suggest an alternative. Let us be positive. I certainly agree with him that we should look towards the future but at the same time we cannot ignore past misdeeds. They have to be kept in proper perspective.. After all, what is history ? Is it not remembrance of the past, both good and bad, deeds ? Antonio

It's a crucial milestone, which will transform India into an aircraft carrier-building nation. The IAC, to be delivered in 2014, will enhance the Navy's blue-water capabilities. August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary Purists believe that of all India idiom, we have diverged the least from the mother Sanskrit. Geography does not limit us, and we use it wherever we happen to live, across the length of the huge Indian peninsula. It was only in Goa that we shared the language with a local populace who do not share our distant origins. Science meets its needs for neologisms by turning, more often than not, to Greek. Now Greek is considered a perfect hybrid : one half Tamil, the other Sanskrit. Tamil arrived on Kriti from the Nile delta, Sanskrit fom the Kannan/Ugarit coast, where Jesus spoke a sister Amhara. For a look at early Crete, watch the m.ovie 'Zorba the Greek.' Todays English blends the French/Phoenician of the the invading Normans of Brittany, and the Germanic/Ugric of Anglia and the Frisian islands. August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary Subject: [Goanet] Congratulations to Goa Net on its Silver Jubilee Hi Tony de Sa, I feel your greetings are timely. The way things are going on on this forum, I see nothing worth its while. We should devote our time to use this forum to enhance our knowledge by discussing issues rationally rather than getting personal. Is there a rule here that a third person should not express his or her(?) opinion on any thread? Just curious. DEAR MODERATORS, CONGRATULATIONS, GoaNet, ON YOUR SILVER JUBILEE And thank you for putting up with us. How about a New Look GoaNet? Maurice D'Mello
