Re: [Goanet] Tivim fort in ruins - Video and pics
Hi Joe, Thanks for the beautiful pictures of the crumbling Tivim fort. Actually, it is a chain of three forts, each having a different name. Of course, at the Colvale side, it ends abruptly in the middle of nowhere. Yes, it is also called the Colvale Fort at the northern end. In fact, well-known fashion designer Wendell Rodricks will know better, as his ancestral house was very close to the Fort perhaps within the fort itself. There was a Fortikar's house there. It was in a slightly better shape when I had been there about twenty years ago. Once they plant the 'green' metal board, the concerned authorities feel that they have done their duty unfortunately. Re: [Goanet] Surya... taxi-driver from Mapusa
Hi Rico, Almost on every Monday morning, I had to catch the first taxi leaving from Mapusa to Panjim. Quite often it used to be Suria's Peugeot taxi. It was in the Seventies, and the Peugeot was the best maintained taxi then. Suria too was a well groomed Bardezkar cabbie. Suria was hefty, physically, and his creamed, long black hair was combed straight back. You travelled in style in his taxi, because he opened the door for you and closed it gently himself. He hated passengers who banged the taxi doors. Hence he would prefer to open and close it gently himself. In order to retain his Peugeot in a prim condition, he had even purchased a second-hand Peugeot for spares.I can't remember whether Suria hailed from Bastora or Arpora. It was just around the time when the Ambassadors and Fiats entered the taxi scene in Goa. Most of the taxis were of the shared type and of the imported lot then. From the Mapusa taxi stand, they would travel to virtually every village in Bardez, tightly packed with passengers generally... specially every Friday. Until the Suez trouble, the taxi fare was just about half a rupee from Mapusa to Panjim, per passenger, because petrol would cost just about 95 paise in Mapusa, while it was five paise less in port town Vasco. Check with Domnic, and he will provide you with a detailed low-down on the taxi topic. Cheers. The entire village - Catholic and even some Hindu members - joined to celebrate the Patoieanchem Fest in a traditional way. Under the guidance of the Parish Priest, Fr Santana Carvalho, and assisted by Mario Fernandes and other villagers, it was a grand occasion, with traditional songs, dances, presentation of rustic occupations - clay pots, weaving of palm leaves, preparing of delicious patoieo and san'na. Above all, there was no chief guest, no competition, no prizes, no sponsors and no plastics. The various wards of the North Goa village collected the musicians among them, led by famed Jazz reedman Braz Gonsalves. There was the rustic percussion band too and the beat was kept by clapping with coconut shells. It was certainly an unique occasion, to watch which, people from surrounding villages too had gathered in Socorro in large numbers. It is a moving festival, which has shifted from Salvador do Mundo, to Pomburpa and this year to Soccorro - all neighbouring villages comprising the oldest settlement in the Bardez taluka.

*GOA WEATHER cloud cast on June 4, 2012* The sky is overcast, with every shade of gray, to the north at around 5.30 pm on June 4, 2012, in Assagao. Goa's first good shower of Monsoon 2012 came later, around midnight. The comparison, for the cloud cast, could be in the earlier picture, around the same time. It was the eve of the traditional Mirg - the day the Catholics in Goa believe to be the start of the annual monsoon. On that day, the parishioners of St Anthony's Church in Siolim, and elsewhere in Goa, celebrated the first day of the trezenas, thirteen nonvenas for the feast of St Anthony. In times of drought or undue delay in the approach of the rains, Goans generally turn to St Anthony for a miracle. Among the Hindu community in Goa, June 6 is considered in their version of Mirg. *RENOVATED REIS MAGOS FORT, GOA:* *Built by Adil Shah as a smaller fort in 1497, the Reis Magos Fort was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1510. The Portuguese conquerors rebuilt it on a grander scale in 1543, particularly to ward off the Dutch invasion. Prominent Goan Architect, Gerard da Cunha, known for Natural Achitecture, was the force behind the restoration. The fort was converted into a jail in 1900 and several freedom fighters - three of whom were present on the occasion - were imprisoned in it. Gerard recalled the efforts of Goa's famed cartoonist, the late Mario Miranda, to restore the fort, supported by the UK-based Lady Hamlyn Trust. Restored at Rs.3.5 crore and rechristened Reis Magos Heritage Centre, the stupendous work is a pioneering endeavour in 'adaptive resuse' of the rich heritage structures in Goa. [Goanet] Aldona bus tragedy claims six lives, mostly students, one woman missing
*Aldona bus tragedy claims six lives, mostly students, one woman still missing* In a tragic accident, a school bus carrying students from St Thomas High School in Aldona, fell in the Calvim river, when the driver of the bus lost control due to brake failure. The serious mishap, which occurred at 12.30 am claimed several lives. A group of around 10 brave boys, who rushed to the scene of the accident and got into the river before the government bodies could arrive, rendered invaluable co-operation in the rescue operation. Rajesh Naik, who is the driver as well as the owner of the ill-fated bus, and the conductor saved their lives by jumping off the bus when it could not be controlled; the vehicle slipped into the water from the ferry ramp, while the ferry was not there. Unofficial reports claim that around eight persons were travelling by the vehicle at the time of the accident. Most of the passengers were students of St Thomas Girls High School in Aldona in the 8 to 10 age group. The bodies found so far include that of Prial P Salgaokar (10), Diana Dias (8) (daughter of Chris Dias), Elvina Dias (11) and Nigel Gracias (11) have been found besides that of Josephine Salvador Dias (58) and Dayanand Janardhan Hoble (55) of Mayem. One woman is believed to be still missing. One family lost two daughters. According to the police, the Interceptor jeep arrived on the scene within 20 minutes of the mishap. A marine commando, Drishti life guards, fire brigade, coastal police, coastal guard helicopter and a crane were a part of the rescue attempt. The crane had a tough time to salvage the bus and managed to lift the bus only when people climbed on it to provide enough leverage. Chief Minister Kamat has announced Rs.2 lakh each as ex-gratia payment for the families of the persons who succumbed to the accident, which has cast a gloom all over Goa. Since there were no proper details forthcoming, the concern grew worse. The Carnival parade, which was just about to begin in Panjim, was called off by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat. The Carnival floats were yet to take off at that time and excited crowds had already lined up along the route, including lot of tourists. The people gathered at the site shouted were enraged to find that all the efforts were concentrated on salvaging the bus from the river instead of searching for the missing bodies. The crowd smashed the window panes of the bus, in anger. There were some heart-rending scenes too when anxious parents of the missing children realised that there were no chances of their children being rescued alive. They blamed the ill-maintained bus owner. Local MLA Dayanand Narvekar, who visited the accident site, too came up for criticism and he had to walk away quietly unable to face the angry crowd. [Goanet] MEET THE ARTIST: KAMALAKANT CHARI
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- *MEET THE ARTIST: KAMALAKANT CHARI* The Tiatr Academy, Goa, (TAG) hosted veteran stagecraft wizard Kamalant Chari in their Konkani Artiste/Artist Series on October 28, 2011, wherein the simple, humble but a higly creative artist from Merces recounted his 40-year-old continuous association with theatre in Goa. Chari, of course, is a household name among the tiatr directors for whom he has been improvising stage sets even at short notice... and doing two or three shows a day at different venues (as only happens in Konkani, Goan, tiatr) certainly calls for superb skill. Out of the 30-odd plays at the ongoing 37th KA Academy Tiatr Competition, Chari has handled the stage sets for as many as 25 plays. One of the most difficult incidents Chari recalled was the morning on which two tiatr directors were at his door pleading him to handle the sets for their respective plays (this, of course, was not rare but it happened) while his little daugther had expired and her body was about to be taken for the final rites. Popular playwright-director-actor Prince Jacob, who trusts Chari for his regular shows, lauded Chari not only for his hardwork and talent but for the fact that Chari never gets angry or annoyed even in the midst of the most trying situations. TAG president Tomazinho Cardozo, who introduced Chari, agreed with Jacob, and said that it is sad that Chari happens to be one of the very few persons doing theatre sets... and at a very nominal charge... which has not made him rich despite so much intense work. Hi Fred, Eric and Roland, Assagao or Anjuna... I belong to both the places somehow or other. I did ask Rodney whether he knew Roland Francis. But he didn't know at that time. I had a feeling that Roland was from Sokolvaddo, where Rodney and former editor of O Heraldo Robin Abreu live. I even had the feeling that Roland's house was below the legendary Kator and near the Marathi Xalla... the big banyan tree next to the xalla is no longer there now. I also feel that A.L. Dias, a former governor, hailed from the vaddo. There are beautiful houses in this Vaddo, including the majestic Lisboa House, with the maximum number of steps leading to it. About Eric Pinto... I am getting interested. Would like to know in which Vaddo his house lies... By the way, is Stanley Pinto from Assagao too? Rather too many questions... and feelings... just nostalgia perhaps. Besides Sobit Assagao, Aldeia de Assagao was a smaller book written by the late Robert de Souza. Rodney is probably the last son of the soil who knew a lot about the aboleancho ganv, immortalised by the likes of Msgr Dalgado, and was interested in it. We leave it to Roland and Eric and others from the Assagao soil, to fill in more details, perhaps fill in the gaps. Assagao lost one of her illustrious daughters - Lea Rangel-Ribeiro - recently. We didn't know her much. You Don't Know Until It Has Happened was the only bit of a book cover I came across in a large heap of ashes, when the famed Vhoddlem Ghor (now Palotti House) was virtually devastated in a fire just on the doorstep of completing a century...about a decade ago! Anjuna has almost been overwritten with Dr Teresa Albuquerque having written Anjuna: Profile of a Village in Goa, published by Promilla Co, New Delhi, in 1988, chronicling the village; and Under the Archangel's Wings, which marked the 400 years of the Church of St Michael in the parish in 2004. She also did a volume on the late Pascoal de Mello. As far as our dongra sokolu neighbour Siolim is concerned, the late Sebastiao D'Cruz has published quite a lot about the beautiful village of Johnson ( his jolly boys) and Reginald (great Goan Konkani novelist), and several others... Now music-maker Remo and cartoonist Alexyz savour the murdoxeo there. Above all, the Saligao book is almost a village bible for me. And the current episode runs out of steam here... Regards. Joel.

Re: [Goanet] Talk to him well, he's a Global Goan
Hi Fred, Your's is a quick, great review of the Konkani play Tum Khuim Asa? from the Kala Academy competition. I felt the community spirit was alive and kicking right through the performance. The narrative took to task some Goan attitudes, but also provided possible alternatives to some of our current ills. It had everything from modern mobile phones to the solar cooker... and how effective these would be in certain circumstances. I saw Roland Martins (GoaCan) watching it quite seriously, with Alexyz and Salil Konkar (Moving Images) in the same row. There were several others too... elite or otherwise. And that reflects tiatr today (as shown and seen), whatever one may feel or say... about it, there is some sort of an equaliser at play, to bring together all sorts of people to the theatre through tiatr... the medium being the mother-tongue. You heard the frequent applause when someone came across an interesting piece of dialogue... and not merely the comic songs (as in a normal tiatr situation). Could be the mixed Catholic-Hindu audience. Thanks for the candid pictures of the tiatr, which in fact had the largest cast, and the charming flower show brought all of them on stage together... and some at the fish market... with Abolem and Kukut ruling the roost. I can't believe that such crowd scenes are possible in any tiatr. Kudos to Mario Fernandes for the global perspective, to director Shirish Naik and Fr Santan, parish priest of Pomburpa, for motivating all of them. 2011/9/21 Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا fredericknoron...@gmail.com Talk to him well, he's a Global Goan --- AS I found my way backstage,

Being rather costly and voluminous the book sells slowly. Damodar, however, is quite satisfied with it. Youtube link: http://w.youtube.com/watch?v=KV4O4focz88 Comments please. Thanks. Joel

[Goanet] Zagrann, art exhibition by sociologist-artist Bernadette Gomes
*ZAGRANN, Night life in Goa, a two-day exhibition of aesthetic paintings by socioligist-artist Bernadette Gomes, was inaugurated by 80-plus Daji Shirodkar (famed for singing at the traditional Siolim Zagor in Goa) at the Kala Academy Art Gallery in Panjim, Goa, India, on 8th April 2011. Bernadette's brush captures some distinct ethnic aspects of Goan life and culture and related colourful events, which are gradually seen being overcome by rapid urbanisation. The sociologist leaves behind for the forthcoming generations some vignettes of the life in Goa, and her brush strokes do it superbly. The paintings (not for sale) are a result of her research.* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6VSTj46eVAhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6VSTj46eVA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_WQaxdni08 *Pics at FlickR* *http://www.flickr.com/photos/52243088@N00/5601437816/* *http://www.flickr.com/photos/52243088@N00/5601437814/* *http://www.flickr.com/photos/52243088@N00/5601437812/*http://www.flickr.com/photos/52243088@N00/5601437812/

[Goanet] EARTH DAY 2011 OBSERVED IN SALIGAO
Hi, Tarika, a college-going lass from Saligao, Goa, did a neat and commendable job of organising a fine gathering of her villagers, to observe the Earth Hour at the Lourdes Convent high school between 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on March 26, 2011. The participants included young and old, to whom Tarika explained the meaning of the Earth Hour; they sang songs (also in Konkani), played their guitars and spoke about some of the things they can do to save the planet and to prevent climate change. Re: [Goanet] This is also carnival – The traditional Carnaval or intruz
Hi Joe, Thanks a lot for the video of zomnivello fell and the beautiful pictures. This year, I was fortunate to see a group perform in Cortalim, Consua, Salvador do Mundo and Curpavaddo. The excitement that the Khell creates in South Goa villages is really unbelievable. People come with their own chairs for the show, walking distances... in the hot sun, standing/sitting in the sun for a couple of hours... and thoroughly enjoying the scene. And the dynamic troupes... almost tireless, very punctual and talented... doing a sequence of shows right through the day. No props. No stage. Just a good Goan band to provide the musical accompaniment. And the politicians supporting the shows quite often. Viva Carnaval! Joel.
