A 98-kilometer segment of the TVH fiber-optic cable responsible for transmitting large volumes of data for landline systems and the Internet was stolen off the Ca Mau coast. Bui Thien Minh, deputy director of state-run Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), one of the owners, said repairs were estimated to cost US$2.6 million. Together with SMW3, the other undersea fiber-optic cable, the damaged network accounted for 82 percent of all data transmitted from and to Vietnam. The rest is transmitted by three land cables and a satellite system. Minh said if part of SMW3 too was stolen Vietnam would be cut off from the outside world. The Internet would collapse first. Even more pessimistic was Lam Quoc Cuong, deputy director of VTI, a VNPT subsidiary responsible for operating the two sea cables, who said there is no effort to ensure that that the remaining sea cable is not stolen. It could be stolen at any time, he warned. Nguyen Xuan Tru, deputy head of the Ministry of Posts and Telematics telecommunication department, said the situation was extremely serious. CAT, a Thai company that invested 45 percent of the cost of the TVH cable, said its experts estimated it would cost $2.6 million to repair the cable. Asean Explorer, a Singaporean ship specializing in cable repair hired by VNPT to survey the problem, said the repairs would take 88 days. Minh said this could take much longer due to paperwork, especially for permission for the vessel to operate in Vietnamese waters. Cuong said there were only three ships capable of repairing fiber-optic cables in the entire Indian and Pacific Oceans. In related news, firms from 10 countries including Vietnam, the US, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore, are teaming up to lay a 20,000 km, $500 million AAG cable to connect Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, with the US. It is expected to be finished by October 2008. Source: Tien Phong - Translated by A.N.O.N --- Government error to blame for undersea cable theft [logo_tnnews.gif] Government error to blame for undersea cable theft The theft of 98 km of undersea fiber-optic cable, which threatens to leave Vietnam isolated, was partly caused by authorities who permitted the collection of unused cable, Thanh Nien has discovered. In August last year the government of Ba Ria Vung Tau province issued a note permitting coast guards to cooperate with civilians in salvaging unused undersea cables laid before 1975. Such cables are no longer in use and are lucrative as scrap. This spawned a rush by fishermen to haul up cables along the southern coast and many reportedly failed to distinguish between unused cables and those in use. Some severed the TVH cable, one of the only two operational undersea cables connecting Vietnam with the outside world. Last month the Ba Ria Vung Tau government withdrew the permission and banned all kinds of cable salvage. A reader wrote to Thanh Nien expressing his indignation at the decision which allowed people to recover cables laid before 1975 at predetermined coordinates. He said the fishermen and soldiers involved were mostly ignorant of coordinates and could not know which cables were laid before 1975 and which after since they lay deep under the sea. Experts estimate it will cost around US$2.6 million and take at least three months to repair

Hi all, The network speed will be huge better when we have local mirrors in Vietnam (managed by a community like HanoiLUG or an organization such as corporates doing business in FOSS or universities, institutes, etc.). However, high Internet cost at home is still one of barriers to prevent someones do installing GNU/Linux over the Internet. In this situation, I think distributing CDs is the best way. Ubuntu-vi could be one of good ideas. However, users still have chances to use the standard Ubuntu (I prefer this idea). It will be better when we (HanoiLUG) can have a local (Ubuntu and others) mirror. [HanoiLUG] A technical question about Spam filter
Dear friends, I am using SpamAssassin 3.1.x on Linux. Now, all mails with spam score over five (5) are marked as spams (so simple configuration). Further more, I would like to remove permanently all mails with score over ten (10). All helps me to configure SpamAssassin to do that are highly appreciated. Also, if SpamAssassin can not or so difficult to do that, could you tell me other open source alternatives, you know, can do that well (marked as spam at 5 and remove permanently at 10). [HanoiLUG] Problem with SATA HDD on linux kernel 2.6.18
My friends, I have got an serious problem with SATA HDD running on CentOS Linux 5 (latest patched kernel 2.6.18). My server often stops working. Now I need to find one solution for anti-spam at mail gateway and the first name I got is Apache Assassin. However when I read Apache Assassin documentation at http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/spamassassin/branches/3.2/README they said that SpamAssassin is not a program to delete spam, route spam and ham to separate mailboxes or folders, or send bounces when you receive spam. Those are mail routing functions, and SpamAssassin is not a mail router. SpamAssassin is a mail filter or classifier. It will examine each message presented to it, and assign a score indicating the likelihood that the mail is spam. An external program must then examine this score and do any routing the user wants done. So somebody could provide me other solution for anti-spam at mail gateway (based on open source software). Kind regards, Tuan - Forwarded Message From: Benjamin Henrion bhenr...@ffii.org To: dtanh at yahoo.com Sent: Friday, December 7, 2007 3:10:23 AM Subject: NOOOXML: Your action is required: Contact TCVN now! Dear Anh Tuan Truong, You signed the NOOOXML petition, a movement backed now by more than 70.000 supporters worldwide. Our effort to influence the OOXML (Office Open XML) standardization process has been an astonishing success so far. We aim for at least 100.000 signatures in February when the Geneva Ballot Resolution Meeting (BRM) will convene with the aim to resolve comments. Microsoft is trying by all means to get its standard adopted without substantial changes despite of its thousands of officially reported technical flaws and the pre-existence of ISO 26300:2006 (OpenDocument, ODF) as the most appropriate international standard for the representation of office documents. By next Tuesday Dec 11 2007 delegates from your National Standards Body TCVN who will participate in the BRM have to be announced to ISO. At least Portugal and Ireland will be represented by Microsoft. In many other countries, we know that Microsoft gold partners are proposing themselves as heads of national delegations. Many of them will prevail if we do not take action. Will you let Microsoft represent your country at Geneva and decide the future of OOXML? [HanoiLUG] Measuring VNPT's ADSL bandwidth quality
David, I agree with you. FPT ADSL is currently the best choice for speed and stability. Highly recommend. We also used it before. Unfortunately, it is not available at our new office. However, we will have to stand on two ways again. The best choice for me now is use both VNPT and Viettel lines. I will also install a Linux box for load balancing and fail over between them. I think It maybe good for you too, Thai. As a result, since November 2007, the new MegaVNN package has been applied in which we're charged 700.000VND/per month instead of 250.000VND/month. At first, our Internet connection did get increased. But gradually, no one can keep our calm with its slow and unstable speed, and we are no exception. To secure our investment, a simple decision was made to 1) downgrade the service to the normal one after March, 2) consider to stop MegaVNN, and switch to another ISP. FYI, here is the statistics data on Internet usage at our office after nearly five months using new package. (See files attached herewith: First screenshot was taken on Feb, the second was on Mar. Smoothwall is used as our firewall). As you can see, the highest speed did reach 152kbytes on Nov. But that's all. The average speed is just 15kbytes. What do you think? Are you in the same situation? Have you any suggestion/advice? What is your choice? At my office we have two ISP, Viettel and VNPT. Until T?t, Viettel was faster and more reliable and now Viettel is still faster but many website are now unaccessible on a random basis. Basically : unusable. At home I use FPT the smallest package at 250k, it just work I have a constant upload speed at 64.5kb and download speed is very often much over 70kb -- Le Quoc Thai Engineer Expert System Softcomputing Institute of Information Technology (VAST) Tel.: (84)-04-961 Mobile: 095-330-7791 ___ HanoiLUG mailing lists: http://lists.hanoilug.org/mailman/ HanoiLUG wiki: http://wiki.hanoilug.org/ HanoiLUG blog: http://blog.hanoilug.org/ ___ HanoiLUG mailing lists: http://lists.hanoilug.org/mailman/ HanoiLUG wiki: http://wiki.hanoilug.org/ HanoiLUG blog: http://blog.hanoilug.org/ -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Very good, more media exposure more members, more activities. More active members too and new initiatives. We receive funding too. * What are some changes you foresee in your plans for 2008? We don't really have plan we're a self help group, but some people wish we become more active at creating solution to help and to be more involved in the overall linux community We also receive donation from Intel in the form of a server and Netnam - a local ISP, in term of bandwidth to create an official mirror for the two most popular gnu/linux distro in Hanoi. * How has membership changed in the last few years? More vocal now? More members now? More member and certain more members that use not to talk. The one who talk keep talking, There's a majority of lurkers but it is accepted * Is the focus of your group discussion changing from a few years? Not really different the main topic is to fix traditional issue vietnamese have with computing under linux. However with the involvement of certain members in the overall GNU/linux community I think its changing to a more proactive role ___ HanoiLUG mailing lists: http://lists.hanoilug.org/mailman/ HanoiLUG wiki: http://wiki.hanoilug.org/ HanoiLUG blog: http://blog.hanoilug.org/ -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If so, my friend might be interested. If there is really someone with these skills willing to work long term in Hanoi, I'll definitely pay him at least $1000/month. Just tell him to send me an email. And personally I would even say that $1000 is not that much for all these skills at once... That's why skilled technical people would usually try to find a job in a foreign company (or even abroad) first. And because of that, the country would lack skilled people and grow slower at technology... [HanoiLUG] Internet/Firefox in North Korea?
HI Hung et all, I think Internet, especially in high speed, is not available or at least not available for almost people there. By the way, Vietnam symbol colour was finally changed to orange (over 50K downloads). It's good for us since there is only stronger one, the red, ahead :). US is the winner with over 3.2 million downloads and then German and Japan. You see, it is almost also the technology map in the world. Hope Vietnamese FOSS community will be grown up more and more. All the same problem. My problem occurs with both AJAX and Classic UI of Yahoo Mail! (in Classic UI, I even can not open the reply window). Note that this problem occurs only when I use wireless connection on Linux. Have you got any better advice? It seems to be at a lower level, maybe the network one. Try to reduce the MTU on your wireless interface. Something like this: sudo ifconfig wlan0 mtu 500 If it works like this, then try to increase the value up to 1400. [HanoiLUG] Problem with some web pages on Linux
Hi all, I had a strange problem when surfing some specific web pages on a newly installed Fedora 9 box. One most used page is Yahoo mail, I can get login, read messages... but I can not send message. It's OK when using wired connection both on Windows and Linux. It's also OK when using wireless connection on Windows (dual boot on that machine). But it doesn't work when trying to connect with wireless connection on Linux. Almost other pages are OK. It seems something wrong with HTTP POST or SOAP. I don't know. Anyone got the same problem? Can you help me! P.S. I have to change to a wired connection to send this message :) Thanks, Tuan -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's so interesting from my friend in AS2 community. Thanks for Patrice for sharing this for us. Hi All, The SELF project (*) and the Open University of Catalonia have jointly produced the book Introduction to Free Software, a really wonderful compendium of all you want to know, and to share, about Free Software (formerly 'F/OSS' or 'FLOSS') (**). It's 200p + 80 p appendixes. Free to download at: http://tinyurl.com/6f8xuo You must then go to (down the page, 'attachments'): Introduction_to_FS--SELF.pdf 2.09 MB for the book, and to: Introduction_to_FS--SELF_errata.pdf 38.18 KB for the errors (a few) A print version is also available, but even at costprice, pricey: Euro 11 + postage (add the same amount...). So what you could do is to print it on locale and distribute it around. The whole thing is of course copyleft! But for you my friends on this list, ferry spessial prayce! ;-) I can send a limited number of copies (@) free of charge thru the University mail (it's a bit of a smuggling operation). But really, really, they must go somewhere where there will be far more than one reader! Mail me pvt! (and allow some time) (@) 5 or so, not more... - (*) Now formally terminated, and is being continued thru the Free Knowledge Institute (http://www.freeknowledge.eu/) (**) After that book I decided to do away with the cumbersome, confusing, and ill-defined 'Open Source'. For me it's now Free Software all the way. Never mind people who still think it's about beer... ;-) Cheers to all, patrizio Dnooos! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Asia Source 2 group. What do you think if HanoiLUG can organize this summit? - Forwarded Message - From: Frederic Muller f...@beijinglug.org To: discuss at saigonlug.org Sent: Friday, May 15, 2009 7:30:26 PM GMT +07:00 Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta Subject: [saigonLug] Gnome.Asia Summit Hi guys! My name is Fred and I am ex-President of Beijing LUG and current Vice President. I am also on the board of Gnome.Asia summit and involved in a few other Open Source projects. Last year we organized Gnome.Asia summit in Beijing, China and we're looking for a team of motivated and passionate individuals to take leadership this year and organize it in a different Asian country/city. I was with mario Behling (LXDE) yesterday and he said the Saigon LUG would be very interested in doing so. We're actually sendint out a call for host on various Gnome mailing, to which I do not know whether you are subscribed. Here is what it says: Call for invitations to be the host of GNOME.Asia Summit 2009 We are soliciting proposals for hosting GNOME.Asia 2009. The GNOME.Asia Summit is planned to be an annual GNOME event hosted in Asia. We started the GNOME.Asia Summit in 2008 and we want to continue this tradition and spread GNOME throughout the Asian region. The GNOME.Asia Summit will focus primarily on the GNOME desktop including both applications and the development platform in addition to larger GNOME-related community in Asia. The Summit brings together the GNOME community in Asia to provide a forum for users, developers, foundation leaders, governments and businesses to discuss a varied range of topics relating to GNOME and the GNOME community in Asia. Learn more about GNOME.Asia Summit from our website at http://www.gnome.asia/en/ The Summit has an active committee to assist the local coordinators, but there is a definitive need for individuals actively involved and committed to the planning and execution of the Summit. There are challenges to work through but the process can be a very rewarding and a lot of fun. GNOME.Asia is much like a tiny seed we want to grow into a tree in Asia. We are looking for local organizers in any Asian country with the desire to take on and succeed in the challenges of organizing an excellent GNOME event. The following two links are must read items for GUADEC, the European model for the Summit. It has also worked well for GNOME.Asia Summit organizers : How to: http://live.gnome.org/GuadecPlanningHowTo?highlight=(guadec)|(howto) http://live.gnome.org/GuadecPlanningHowTo?highlight=%28guadec%29%7C%28howto%29 Check list: http://live.gnome.org/GuadecPlanningHowTo/CheckList You will also find the template of GNOME.Asia Summit 2008 Proposal is very helpful: Download the proposal template from: http://www.gnome.asia/static/upload/document/GNOME_Asia_Summit_proposal.pdf Dear GNOME friends For those of you who would like to host the next GNOME.Asia Summit in 2009 you are hereby invited to write a formal invitation to the GNOME.Asia Committee list (asia-summit-list at gnome.org mailto:asia-summit-list at gnome.org) regarding your ideas for this years signature Asian GNOME event! So it would mean putting you in a risky situation, at least for the stability of your system... If I'm correct on this one and if, like me, you want your main desktop system to keep being stable because it's what you use for your everyday work and you don't have time to play around everyday (or near so) to correct the effect of a bleeding edge update, then you'll probably don't want to use the rawhide repository. Sorry everyone. I assumed that you know the risky of rawhide (under development) packages :) If the only thing you want to risk now is the Pidgin update, then you may prefer to add the Pidgin dedicated repository instead, see: http://www.pidgin.im/download/fedora_core/ This contains packages for Fedora until core 7 (not 8 and higher) so you should use my preferable way, download and install manually (using rpm -Uvh...) from: ftp://195.220.108.108/linux/fedora/updates/10/x86_64/libpurple-2.5.7-1.fc10.i386.rpm ftp://195.220.108.108/linux/fedora/updates/10/i386/pidgin-2.5.7-1.fc10.i386.rpm Kind regards, Tuan ___ POST RULES : http://wiki.hanoilug.org/hanoilug:mailing_list_guidelines ___ HanoiLUG mailing lists: http://lists.hanoilug.org/ HanoiLUG wiki: http://wiki.hanoilug.org/ HanoiLUG blog: http://blog.hanoilug.org/

Re: [HanoiLUG] Attend to Japan Linux Symposium
- NAHieu nah...@gmail.com wrote: On Tue, Oct 27, 2009 at 8:20 PM, Truong Anh. Tuan tua...@iwayvietnam.com wrote: My friends, I have been back from Japan Linux Symposium and certainly enjoyed my trip much. These are some lines about my feelings at the event: http://blog.iwayvietnam.com/tuanta/2009/10/27/japan-linux-symposium-a-point-of-view/ Bạn có câu khá lý thú: Tại sao cộng đồng sử dụng và tham gia phát triển phần mềm tự do nguồn mở, đặc biệt là phát triển, đóng góp cho Linux Kernel tại Việt Nam chưa có mức độ phát triển tương xứng với tiềm năng thực sự của chúng ta?!?!
