Lately I have been having trouble with Mailing Lists. They disappear from from my address book. Then they will re-appear on another day. Are they kept in a special place where they can be checked or reviewed? I thought they were just in an alphabetical place in the list. Can anyone tell me what is going on. How to correct it? PS: I use w2000pro and have a large list. The address book brought up from the tools menu looks a lot different that the one that is beside the window where I write this letter. Here it is alphabetical. The Tools menu one is all over the map and it is hard to find if someone is in there. Can the Tools menu one be made alpha? Sam

Re: [H] Windows 7 ?
Read this**\ April 27, 2009 (Computerworld) Ever since Bill Gates stepped down and Steve Ballmer took over his role, Microsoft has been getting one thing after another wrong. Vista continues to be a disaster both for users and for the company's bottom line. And Microsoft's ad campaign last year, starring Gates and Jerry Seinfeld http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9114538, is already a model of how /not/ to do television advertising. Somehow, though, after years of stumbling around like a drunken college freshman after an NCAA basketball win, Microsoft is getting its act together. First, Microsoft has reluctantly -- oh how reluctantly -- brought back Windows XP. Officially, Microsoft has cut XP support http://blogs.computerworld.com/good_bye_xp_hello_windows_7. Unofficially, hardware vendors such as Hewlett-Packard aren't going to let XP die anytime soon. You'll still be getting new PCs with XP on them well into 2010 http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9131191, and I wouldn't be surprised to see fresh copies of XP appearing in 2011. Microsoft finally got it. No one with two brain cells wants Vista. What's more amazing to me, though, is that Microsoft finally figured out that after Vista, no one wants a long, drawn-out rollout of a new Windows operating system. So, instead of orchestrating its traditional years-long series of preannouncements and announcements, Microsoft is just focusing on getting Windows 7 -- a.k.a. Vista Lite -- out as fast as possible, with as little official fanfare as possible. That doesn't mean Microsoft hasn't been advertising Windows 7. But buying time on television and space in magazines might make more people realize just how thoroughly Microsoft has given up on Vista. Instead, Microsoft is advertising the upcoming release by leaking betas http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9124399 almost every week -- and will soon do the same with release-candidate builds. It's funny that some people actually think that anyone is pirating Windows 7 betas. It's clear that Microsoft is deliberately leaking them to build up buzz around the new operating system. Don't believe me? Then why does Microsoft give away free authentication keys that will let /any/ copy of Windows 7 work? If the company didn't want those copies of Windows 7 out there, it wouldn't do that. This tactic is fairly subtle: By making people work -- but not too hard -- to get copies of Windows 7, Microsoft is leading them to believe that they're onto something special. And since it has been a long, long time since anyone thought there was something special about Windows, this is savvy marketing on Microsoft's part. (Mind you, I've been running Windows 7 for quite some time now on a variety of test boxes, and it's not all that great. It's better than Vista, but that's really not saying much. For my money, XP SP3 is still the best of the Windows family.) Finally, Microsoft has also come up with a winning set of TV ads. The ones with the cute kids are, well, cute, and the Mac attack ads do make the point that PCs really are cheaper than Apple's proprietary hardware. However, if you're a thinking user, you'll realize that you get what you pay for and that Macs really are better than low-cost PCs. And if you're a thinking user who wants a really low-cost PC, you don't want Windows anyway -- you want desktop Linux. But Microsoft's ads aren't meant for savvy computer users. They're meant for home users with XP Home and Conficker on their PCs. As long as you don't look too closely at Microsoft's offerings, its new marketing and ads are making Windows look good again. Who would have thought that Microsoft could pull the wool over even dumb users' eyes again? That, nevertheless, is what it's managing to do. /*Steven J. It all comes down to bandwidth - the cable satellite operators have limited bandwidth and are trying to cram as many stations in as possible, and in many case this means highly compressing some stations. Usually they try to make sure that HD signals where it is most likely to be noticed (Discovery HD, PPV movies and live sports) get the best signal while other pseudo HD channels like History or HGTV will get re-compressed like crazy. --- Brian Weeden Technical Consultant Secure World Foundation http://www.secureworldfoundation.org +1 (514) 466-2756 Canada +1 (202) 683-8534 US On Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 1:35 AM, James Maki jwm_maill...@comcast.net wrote: I discovered something this week and am trying to understand its ramifications. I noticed lots of pixelation and motion blur the last two weeks of Heroes. NBC broadcasts at 1080i for HDTV. I checked the statistics for the show I recorded via HD Homerun tuners using Comcast cable, and NBC is averaging about 4.8 GB per hour for a 1080i show. I thought is a bit low but was even more surprised when I checked out shows on the other broadcast networks. ABC 720p/60fps 6.3 GB NBC 1080i/29.97fps 4.8 GB CBS 1080i/29.97fps 5.6 GB PBS 720p/60fps 5.4 GB CW 1080i/29.97fps 7.9 GB FOX 720p/60fps 7.3 GB I find it strange that NBC has the lowest total file size but is broadcasting at 1080i, so I assuming (and I know the drawback of that!) it is compressed more than the other channels and am again assuming that is why I am seeing the picture degradation. Calling Comcast is a joke, so I wanted to do the math to calculate the 'bits-per-second for each case, but am not exactly sure if I am doing this correctly. It would seem that 4.8 GB/hr would calculate as: 4.8 GB/hr * 1 hr/60 min * 1 min/60 sec * 1024 MB/GB * 8 Mb/MB = 10.9 Mbps. One online source indicated that for quality 1080i you should have at least 15 Mbps. For the FOX network, the calculation would give 16.6 Mbps, far better than the 12 Mbps my online source gave for quality 720p broadcasts. I can't understand why the 720p broadcast is actually providing better throughput than the 1080i. It seems backwards (which is why I am wondering if my math is correct). I am not sure how to factor in the fps figures, if at all. If you can add some insight, it would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim Maki jwm_maill...@comcast.net No virus found in this incoming message. Have you got this problem solved? Did you get Acronis? Sam DHSinclair wrote: Sam, Went and dl'd the trial copy of DD10 from Acronis. I do recognize the windows. Re: [H] Non booting case
I am at a standstill on my checking. Would there be any danger in using a second known good psu and just plugging in the 24 pin main supply cable and leave the HD power on the old power supply? This would show up if there was a break in one of the power wires in the old power supply without just changing ir all out. Sam FORC5 wrote: I have always used pins 16 and 10 At 01:10 PM 11/23/2008, DHSinclair Poked the stick with: Sam, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATX IIRC, if you jumper pins 15 and 16, you will do the same thing the m/b's internal switching logic does to turn the system on. Please do not hold me to my choice of pins. Others in the collective have much more experience with this and may offer other choices of pins. And, in all truth, I have not really seen all that many true internal wiring problems in modern PC cases since ~1975. I have only seen one m/b whose internal switching logic went bad or died. I would focus on the m/b ground logic and/or the psu. Jumpering the 24-pin power connector should really be a last ditch kind of trial. [H] Ubuntu 8.04
I just got the new Ubuntu and decided to try it. I put in the CD, followed the instructions to install, and the darn thing trashed both my hard drives by the time it was through. I had an EXT3 partition I thought it would use. That drive it wiped everything off it and took over the end of the other drive. It squashed my 2 other partitions right up against each other at the beginning of the drive, taking up all the extra space. All my data was on partition 2 and it squashed it so tightly I can not even access it. The first partition had my Windows on it. Windows would still run, but it was useless because it could not access the data on partition 2. Can anyone tell me how to install Ubuntu without trashing everything after I get my computer back running again? Or is it necessary to install it on it's own box? Sam

But if that is actually true, why are they so anti-religious in their daily actions? I'm guessing most people either feel they MUST say they are religious, or use religion as a salve to cover their own guilty consciences. There's a lot of truth in what you say. There are many different degrees of religious belief, and for some people it is only a thin veneer. In the end, each one of us will have to stand in front of the Judgment seat and our actual adherence to Jesus' teachings will be revealed. Here's a quote from Jesus, talking about eternal life: For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (Matthew 7:14, RSV) and elsewhere: Unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3) I think what he is saying is that the way of salvation was purposefully made difficult to accept, requiring child-like faith, and a non-reliance upon acquired wealth, intellect, or degree of scientific knowledge. Gary VanderMolen I have been following this thread with no comment to date. Here is my 2 cents: I believe there are very few Christians. Ones that really live the life Jesus taught. There are numerous ones that speak it. The same can be said for Muslims, Jews, Budhists and the rest of them. Whether they believe in Evolution or Intelligent design is another matter. I think most of them parrot what they think their peers expect of them. Not too many of them are capable of independant thinking and scientific analysis. A great example is President Bush. We would not be in the terrible situation we find ourselves in if he was a real CHRISTIAN that he claims he is. A person who lived Jesus teachings could not slaughter innocent people. And he would not have a foe. The human race has not evolved enough or Intelligent Design was a failure. Sam
