Subject: NACO and RDA Authority Records for Hebraica contributors to the LCNAF
- Funnel and non-Funnel contributors

Dear Hebraica NACO Funnel members/contributors and institutional Hebraica NACO
contributors,

It was recently announced that PCC Day One for RDA Authority Records will be
March 31, 2013 .   What that means is that after PCC Day One

·      Access points used in all new RDA and AACR2
bibliographic records with authentication code “pcc” must be supported by RDA
authority records.

· PCC   catalogers contributing RDA or AACR2 bibliographic
records with authentication code “pcc” must evaluate and re-code as RDA any
AACR2 authority record that had been flagged as not usable as an RDA heading,
but which is needed as an access point in the “pcc” authenticated bibliographic
record.   These records include a 667 field beginning “This heading cannot be
used under RDA until …”

Until March 31, 2013 PCC catalogers will continue to follow the PCC Post RDA
Test Guidelines  ( http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/PCC-Post-RDA-Test.html ).

To prepare NACO catalogers for the transition to RDA, the PCC Secretariat has
developed a series of modules to serve as RDA NACO authority training for
current AACR2 NACO authority catalogers. T he training modules will be
available beginning in April 2012 . The training is totally online. It is
designed for existing NACO Program members who are making the transition from
AACR2 to RDA: Resource Description Access for NACO contributions. It is
assumed that participants are comfortable with creating and updating NACO
authority records in the MARC 21 Authority Format, and are aware of NACO
documentation and contribution parameters.

The training is general in nature, and highlights the differences between AACR2
NACO headings and references, and RDA NACO authorized access points and variant
access points. There is a concentration on recording attributes in the
authority record using the new RDA-inspired MARC 21 fields.

The training should take approximately 10-12 hours to complete (this is a rough
estimate) and it is recommended that the training be taken within a
one-to-two-week period, with a preference for the one-week period, for the sake
of continuity.

PCC has specified that a period of mandatory review will follow the completion
of the training.

*The training is not designed for new NACO Program members with no previous
authority experience. A period of mandatory review will follow the completion
of the training.

This training will not cover RDA/NACO authority work for more specialized types
of resources such as Hebraica, CJK, law, religion … [et al.].   Joan and I will
work together to provide additional training for creating Hebraica headings
with their unique and particular issues and practices.

Joan and I will assume responsibility for review of  all newly created and
updated RDA Hebraica headings for both Hebraica NACO Funnel and non-Funnel
members.

We are still in the planning stages but will keep you updated as more
information on workflows, etc. becomes available.

Thank you,
Heidi G. Lerner

[ha-Safran] RDA NACO trainnig for Hebraica NACO contributers

2012-07-25 Thread Heidi G Lerner

Dear Hebrew NACO Funnel members/contributors and institutional Hebraica NACO
contributors,

As I reported earlier (email to Heb-NACO listserv March 30, 2012 ), PCC is
working to transition NACO participants into creating RDA authority records.
PCC Day One for RDA Authority Records is March 31, 2013 . What this means is
that access points used in all new RDA and AACR2 bibliographic records with
authentication code “pcc” must be supported by RDA authority records (
http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/rda/RDA%20FAQ.html ).

The Hebraica NACO Funnel made arrangements with the PCC Secretariat to offer
formal RDA NACO Training, to coordinate the required webinars that have been
prepared by the PCC Secretariat, and to supervise the mandatory review period
for our community. This initial training is only available for independent and
experienced NACO Hebraica catalogers. We have been assigned August- September
2012 . The webinars are freely available to NACO catalogers and you should
watch them during the training period (
http://www.loc.gov/catworkshop/courses/rda_naco/index.html ). Joan and I will
prepare some supplementary materials during this training period. We are also
working on a platform to be coordinated with the Heb-NACO listserv which will
serve as a forum for general RDA questions that will come up as all of us
transition into the new cataloging environment based on the RDA Toolkit.

The review period will follow roughly the same guidelines as when catalogers
underwent initial ‎ NACO training. Catalogers will submit all newly created
NARS to me for review. These will be looked at by both Joan and me; we will
send them back with our comments. When we think that an individual cataloger is
ready for a formal review, he or she will be notified. Joan and I both
underwent the NACO review that was required of all official RDA testers.

In the meantime I hope that you are getting yourselves familiar with the
Toolkit and other documentation that can be found at the PCC and other
websites. Please feel free to contact Joan and me with any questions that you
might have.

Sincerely,
Heidi Lerner (Coordinator, NACO Hebraica Funnel)

[ha-Safran] Lets welcome Jerry Anne Dickel

2012-07-25 Thread Heidi G Lerner

Dear safranim and colleagues,

I am very happy to announce that Jerry Anne Dickel (Geraldine Dickel) has been
promoted to the position of Hebraica Cataloger at Yale University. Many of us
have worked with her in years gone by when she worked with Daniel Lovins as the
Hebraica copy cataloger. She brings a lot of experience and I know that we will
be very delighted to have a new colleague on board.
Her contact information can be found at the Yale website.

[ha-Safran] bibliography of Ladino author Moise Habib?

2013-02-11 Thread Heidi G Lerner

Dear safranim,

I have a small monograph with the title La ermoza Anjela i su amante.

It is a caption title, the monograph is paged [49]-64. I am certain that there
are pages missing after 64. I don't know what was contained in pages 1-48.

I have no statement of responsibility but it appears Moise Levi wrote at least
8 little books with similar titles that were published in Instanbul by Rekabet
Matbaasi in 1931.

Are any of you familiar with this author and/or this press? Is there a
bibliography of his works? I have found 8 titles by Moise Levi that are held by
the Yad ben Zvi Library but this title is not among them.

Any help that can be provided in idenfiying the author the piece that I have in
hand will be appreciated.

Thank you, Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran] Training and review for creating original RDA records for resources in Hebrew script (PCC BIBCO and Hebaica NACO Funnel members)

2013-04-10 Thread Heidi G Lerner

Please excuse cross-posting:

To: Catalogers of Hebraica materials whose institutions are in PCC BIBCO and/or
who participate in the Hebraica NACO Funnel

Subject: Training and review for creating original RDA records for resources in
Hebrew script*

Creating an original bibliographic record for a resource in Hebrew script
presents an array of challenges, and employs special rules and practices.
Issues encountered while describing resources in Hebrew script under AACR2
exist also under RDA.

Standard BIBCO training materials cover RDA, but Hebraica catalogers will
benefit from additional training and review.   The PCC hopes that offering a
unified approach for such training and review will increase the availability of
high-quality records cataloged according to RDA.

Pre-requisites for RDA training for Hebrew script:

1.   Membership in PCC BIBCO and/or the Hebraica NACO Funnel

2.   RDA NACO training to reach independence

3.   Completion of BIBCO RDA “ Bridge ” training, using online LC RDA
descriptive cataloging Modules 1-4, and the online BIBCO RDA Webinars 1-4 (live
or recorded)

Methods:

1.   Trainers will provide initial guidelines for Hebraica cataloging in RDA.

2.   Participants will follow the PCC BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) for textual
monographs ( http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/scs/documents/PCC-RDA-BSR.pdf ).

3.   Participants will submit records and receive comments from reviewers.

*Note:   Authentication of bibliographic records with official BIBCO coding
“042 pcc” will be used only by catalogers in BIBCO institutions, although all
participants in this training will be able to create RDA bibliographic records.
Staff at LC and other institutions are hopeful that this training program for
Hebraica RDA will expand into a BIBCO Hebraica Funnel.

To participating in this training program or for more information, please
email:

·     Heidi G. Lerner, Coordinator, NACO Hebraica Funnel; RDA PCC/BIBCO
record reviewer, Stanford University Libraries (ler...@stanford.edu)

·     With a copy to:   Carolyn Sturtevant, BIBCO Coordinator, Library of
Congress (e-mail: c...@loc.gov)

 Dear Safranim, This is a
wonderful achievement and Prof. Choueka deserves all the credit in the world for
developing and implementing the advanced computer programming which makes these
types of comparisons possible. It may be worth noting for historical
purposes that the use of digital technologies to search physically dispersed
genizah fragments and to compare them in order to identify matches was pioneered
at the Penn Libraries in partnership with the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Unit at
Cambridge University Library and with the Library of the Jewish Theological
Seminary in New York City. See: http://sceti.library.upenn.edu/genizah/index.cfm
/ Among the librarians who participated in this effort were our
own Heidi Lerner at Stanford University and Naomi Steinberger at the Library of
the Jewish Theological Seminary.. Note also that Heidi and Seth Jerchower,
then at the Penn Libraries, gave numerous presentations and published an article
discussing the MARC cataloging issues they solved in the course of the project.
Their article, which first appeared in Cataloging Classification
Quarterly, Volume 42, Number 1, 2006, pages 21-39, can be read on-line
via the Scholarly Commons website at the University of Pennsylvania: http://repository.upenn.edu/library_papers/7/

approximately 60-90 minutes each after each of the self-study periods. The
anticipated dates of the workshop are Jan. 7-Jan. 21. Hebraica catalogers who
successfully complete this initial training are then invited to join the NACO
Hebraica Funnel and receive the specialized training that is required to create
Hebraica name authority records for personal names NARS, corporate bodies, and
preferred titles leading to the creation and contribution of NARs to the LCNAF.

Hi,

I m writing an artcile on the Jewish religioun texts' effects on Ottoman
poetry.
Ottoman religious poetry is getting its knowledge from Quran. But, Quran lacks
some info
about the lives of the prophets. So, the İslamic scholars take some more info
from Tora to add in their biography books of
prophets.
Apperantly, scholars took some info from the midrashes too.

I m now working on a 15th century poem book. (Halilname) All of the book is
telling the life story of Abraham.
It has Islamıc carecter. But, some info is from the Jewish religioun. Maybe the
writer talked with
some Jewish scholars in Anatolia, maybe he read some books. We dont know.

My questions are;
1) Is there diffrent midrashes? I've found midrash rabba in the library
2)Is this one a rigt midrash?
http://www.parsontom.com/books/Book%20of%20Jasher.pdf
3)Is there any further Jewish book, which can give the details of the life of
Abraham?
I m espacially looking for miracles. For example, Abraham becomes 5 years old
in 5 days in midrash and in
the Ottoman poem book.

Thank you very much,
Kind regards.

[ha-Safran] Fwd: A Computerized Corpus of Judeo-Arabic

2014-04-03 Thread Heidi G Lerner

FYI -
- Forwarded Message -

From: The Friedberg Genizah Project friedbergproj...@genizah.org
To: ler...@stanford.edu
Sent: Wednesday, April 2, 2014 11:17:00 PM
Subject: A Computerized Corpus of Judeo-Arabic

A Computerized Corpus of Judeo-Arabic

The Friedberg Genizah Project is pleased to announce the launching of a new
website: The Friedberg Judeo-Arabic Corpus Website, freely accessible to all
through http://www.jewishmanuscripts.org , pending a short registration (if you
already have a user name and a password for the Genizah website, you don't need
to register again).

For our purposes, Judeo-Arabic refers to works written mostly between the
eighth and the eighteenth century, both in classical Arabic and in the
day-to-day spoken dialect, with Hebrew characters (using diacritical marks for
Arabic letters that have no equivalent ones in Hebrew), instead of Arabic ones.

This first version of the site contains 110 works in Judeo-Arabic, among them
the famous works of Maimonides, Saadya Gaon, Yehuda Halevi, and many others,
totaling almost 4 million words, with a lexicon (list of different words) of
more than 280,000 words. The complete list of these works, with the relevant
bibliographical details, appear in the site.

The corpus is accompanied by an advanced full-text search system that can
search for words and phrases and display their occurrences in the corpus (or in
selected parts thereof) with suitable one-line context s and various
statistics.

The contexts can be sorted by the word following or preceding the keyword, and
can be enlarged to display an entire logical unit of that text.

For almost every page of every work in the corpus, an image is available that
can be viewed side-by-side with its transcription, for comparison purposes.
Easy and efficient browsing in all these works is also available.

For more information on all the functions available in the site and their
various parameters see the site's Homepage.

In the first stage, the site will contain Judeo-Arabic works that have already
appeared in print, focusing on works that were written up to the 16th century.

With time, the corpus will be expanded, hopefully encompassing all Judeo-Arabic
titles in the mentioned group.

We wish to thank Haggai ben-Shammai and David Sklare for their help in
compiling the nucleus of the list of works to be included in the corpus and for
placing at our disposal copies of some rare editions of these works.

The site was developed and is maintained by Genazim Digital, the Computing
Unit of the Friedberg Genizah Project, led by Professor Yaacov Choueka.

Re: [ha-Safran] how to romanize a shva merachef

2014-04-30 Thread Heidi G Lerner
Hi Hayim,
We do romanize this as bi-khelal. ALA/LC romanization is focused on sheva naʻ
and sheva naḥ. Take a look at Paul Maher's Hebraica cataloging (page 10).

Here is the link to the online version:

Dear Safranim,

I am cataloging a Hebrew book hat has the word בכלל in the title. The ב takes a
hirik and the כ keeps the shva. This shva becomes a shva merachef. My question
is: in romanizing this word should it be bikhlal or bi-khelal? My inclination
is towards the former, since I've been taught that the shva merachef is not a
real (vocalized) shva.

Thank you and Hodsh tov,
Haim

[ha-Safran] help identifying resource

2014-06-27 Thread Heidi G Lerner
Dear safranim,

I have a collection of selihot prayers and piyutim translated into Ladino by
Leon Gabai. My resource lacks a title page or any kind of imprint statement
although it seems that Leon Gabai is connected with Kushṭa (Constantinople)
with publications associated with him published in 1928-1935.
The volume is 19 cm and 78? pages [it is in very poor condition and some end
pages might be missign as well..The caption title on page 1 is Seliḥot. Page
29 has a caption title of Piyutim de Rosh ha-Shanah.
Any help in identifying this resource would be grealy appreciated.

Thank you, Heidi

[ha-Safran] Hebrew Cataloging RDA now available online

2015-02-09 Thread Heidi G Lerner
I would like to announce that Hebraica Cataloging RDA: a Guide to ALA/LC
Romanization and Descriptive Cataloging is now available. This online resource
supplements and updates Hebraica Cataloging (Paul Maher) that appeared in 1987.
This new resource aims to serve as a published guide to the romanization and
descriptive cataloging of Hebraica materials in RDA by the Library of Congress
and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC).

This resource was created by Joan Biella (formerly of LC), Benjamin Fryser
(LC), and Heidi Lerner (Stanford Libraries) and is available at the AJL RAS
Cataloging Committee Wiki:

http://rascat.pbworks.com/w/page/7836007/FrontPage

This resource has been several years in the making and incorporates many
comments made on the first draft. A second part containing annotated examples
taken from a summer 2013 workshop-style e-forum for Hebraica cataloguers
(developed to as a platform for discussing issues in RDA cataloging particular
to Hebrew and Yiddish materials) will follow in th spring or summer of 2015.

Thank you, Heidi Lerner

Dear safranim,

I would like to search ONLY the catalog of the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book.
When I go to URL:

http://web.nli.org.il/sites/NLI/English/infochannels/Catalogs/bibliographic-databases/Pages/the-hebrew-book.aspx

I click on the link to the Enter catalog bibliography of the Hebrew book.

However, it takes me to the catalog of the National Library of Israel.

If I click on Other Libraries| Bibliography of the Hebrew Book 1470-1960 (MBI)

It takes me to the new Merhav Library Catalog.

The options available to me there are either the entire catalog or other units
within NLI but there is not option for the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book.

Any advice on how to access it would be appreciated.

Thanks, Heidi Lerner

Subject: [ha-Safran] retirement

Dear Friends,

As many of you may have already heard, I will be retiring from my position as
Dean of Libraries at Yeshiva University at the end of this academic year.

My experience at Yeshiva has been an extremely rewarding professional journey;
one from which I derived a great deal of personal satisfaction. Along with a
wonderful group of librarians and support personnel, I had the opportunity to
move the YU libraries forward and to provide the student and faculty community
with the best that we could offer. I have had the pleasure of working with many
of you at AJL in various capacities and I expect I will continue to be involved
in the years to come.

A committee has been formed to search for my replacement.

For information see

[ha-Safran] Bibliography of the Hebrew Book

2015-02-26 Thread Heidi G Lerner

When I just checked the link to the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book (BHB) for
the page mentioned below (
http://web.nli.org.il/sites/NLI/English/infochannels/Catalogs/bibliographic-databases/Pages/the-hebrew-book.aspx
) does work and brings me to the BHB interface. But I will ask someone to
check it Sunday.

In any case I will check why the link to BHB appears in the Footer of the NLI
page only on the Hebrew side and not in English.

Please note that we have incorporated BHB information into our gneral authority
file as well, this can be accessed:

1. By clicking on the Reshumat Zihui in the library old catalogue OPAC.

2. VIAF (viaf.org), if you open the record of NLI (under the 678 fields).

3. If you use z39.50 to search our authority database.

Note, of course, that the information in the general authority of NLI exists
only in cases where such information existed in the BHB project.

Dear safranim,
A short while ago I sent out via Hasafran a short survey of digitization
projects. This survey was meant to look at what projects have been, or are in
development or completed that lie in the sphere of Jewish Studies. Please do
not list any projects that fall out of that scope.
Thanks, Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran] Extension of deadline to complete surveys on digital technology and Jewish Studies

2015-05-04 Thread Heidi G Lerner

Dear colleagues,
Many thanks to all of you who have already taken the time to fill out and
return your responses to the two surveys on digital technology and Jewish
Studies that I recently disseminated. I have extended the deadline for
responding to Friday May, 8 in the hopes that more of you will also fill out
the surveys (see links below).

I am certain that the information that is revealed through the surveys will be
of use to all of you in seeing what kinds of digital projects and tools are out
there, and being used or developed by faculty, researchers, students, and
cultural and information professionals working in Jewish Studies. Ideally we
will learn how our own teaching, researching, and curating Jewish intellectual
and cultural output can be created and enhanced.

Thank you, Heidi Lerner

Hi Anne,

You would probably be better off searching the Israel Union Catalog. It should
all Israeli dissertations:

"lib.ac.il"

Go to "other catalogs:

For all dissertations:

select: "ULITHE - Theses

For electronic dissertations

select "ULIETHE - E-Theses

Dear colleagues,

I am trying to figure out who was the author of the illustrations (apparently
woodcuts) in Tse’enah u-re’enah (Sulzbach, 1789, new edition 1826). It may be
very difficult to identify the artist, but perhaps someone has additional
information. Thank you. Gabriel

Hello Hebrew-studies-affiliated friends!

I am in a Hebrew-related conundrum I have on my hands a 300+ page
Hebrew-language dissertation on ... (the topic of my senior Honors thesis at
Tufts), which I was gifted kindly by its author at Hebrew University.
Unfortunately, the author refused to give me a digital copy (perhaps due to
fear of plagiarism?) so I have scanned the whole paper copy to take home over
vacation.

I recently realized I’d be able to use the work best if OCR’d (read digitally)
and translated, at least roughly, so that I can understand which sections are
most important to read in the original. I don’t, however, have Adobe Premium,
and all other OCR services (at least those I’ve used so far!) seem not to
really work on Hebrew texts. Do you have suggestions for an OCR or
OCR/translation app/website that can handle Hebrew, ideally in large
quantities? If not for your own personal use, do you know what students in the
field use?

Any help is appreciated! ...

[ha-Safran] help in identifying Yiddish playlet

2019-03-29 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I have an incomplete playlet published by A. Gitlin of Warsaw.(probably
published in the 1920s or 1930s).

The work is in 6 בילדער and I am missing the text of the 1st בילד.

The item is 40 pages and 16 cm.

The characters include "Ṭate, Prints, Tsirele, Royzale".

Unfortunately the 300 physical description field is not indexed in OCLC so
there is no way to narrow down search results under a search for publisher
(Gitlin).

Any help in identifying this work will be appreciated.

Thanks, Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran] seeking information on Israeli pianist

2019-08-29 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear Safranim and Yiddish theater enthusiasts,

I have a reference to a performance in Israel of the Dibek (undated and place
of performance unkown) that featured Mikhoel Grinshteyn, Nathan Wolfowich and
incidental music by Joel Engel.

The accompanist to the production was "שמואל פרסקו"

I cannot find any other references to him other than a possible tombstone. If
anyone knows more about him I would be most appreciative in learning more.

Thank you, Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran] seek help in identifying source of Yiddish play

2019-09-15 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

Sometime in the 1920s in Buenos Aires Nehemias Zucker directed/produced a
playlet in Yiddish based on a short story(?) by Mark Twain. The Yiddish title
is ״דער רעדאקטאר״.

I am wondering if is based on the Mark Twain short story "Nicodemus Dodge --
printer"?

Any help that can be offered is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Heidi Lerner

Hi Michelle,

I did a very quick search under Israel. Lishkah ha-merkazit li-sṭaṭisṭiḳah

for years 1970-1989 and came up with 118 titles in our local catalog.

You might searching that way across monographs and serials.

volumes (Israel)

Dear all,

In clearing out a backlog of uncataloged materials, I've uncovered a huge
number of volumes from the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics from the 70s
and 80s. I would like to have them cataloged, but strangely I'm only finding
one or two records in Worldcat. Is there a serial name for these? They run
the gamut from Criminal Activity to Labour Force Survey and pretty much
everywhere in between.

Unfortunately we do not have an original cataloger for Hebrew, so I need some
kind of records to send these over for processing - I'd appreciate any ideas!

Thanks,
Michelle

Subject: Cataloging questions

Hello Heidi,

My name is Dave Saia, and I am the librarian at Heim Middle School, in
Williamsville, NY, just outside of Buffalo.

Through one of my coworkers here at Heim Middle, I have been asked to assist a
small local synagogue to help them get their library organized. Two synagogues
have just merged and built a new facility and both had a resource library. Now
that they have merged, they have a collection of about 2,000 items. Most of
the books are in English, but there are some titles…maybe about 150 that are in
Hebrew or Yiddish.

I am really looking for some advice and help getting started with cataloging in
either of these two languages. I have found some resources at some of the
larger academic libraries, like Yale University. But the materials seem above
my head, and beyond what we will need here.

The Temple has purchased one of those software packages for library
organization and building. It allows Z39.50 MARC record transfer through
Amazon and the Library of Congress. It also seems to allow records to be
transferred through file upload.

I am not Jewish, and I have no knowledge of Hebrew or Yiddish. The folks at
the Temple have told me they will have someone help me with translation of
materials into English.

My hope is that we can find most of the records we need through Z39.50
transfer. I am wondering if there is anyone in the AJL Cataloging Committee
who has experience with Z39.50 through the Library of Congress. Also, I am
wondering if there might be a Jewish libraries cataloging consortium that would
give us access to MARC records if we need it.

Thank you for whatever insights and thoughts you can share!

Sincerely,

Dave

[ha-Safran] Hebrew language theater program/group for young people in Los Angeles in the 1960s

2020-04-20 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I recently came across a reference to a young people’s Hebrew language theater
program that existed at least in the 1960s in Los Angeles (Bitsaron, v. 47,
gil. 236, p. 254) “ארגון התיאטרון העברי לנוער” under the auspices of the
Hebrew Language and Culture Association in Los Angeles (official name in
Hebrew: ההסתדרות העברית המרכזית בלוס-אנג'לס).

The director of this Hebrew theater program was an Israeli actress named Sarah
Arazi. I am very interested to learn something about her. If any of you know
of and have access to archives of these organizations, the Newsleetter of the
Bureau of Jewish Education in Los Angeles, ephemera, etc. I would be very
interested in hearing.

Please feel free to contact me privately.

Thank you in advance, Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran] upcoming retirement

2021-01-12 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I want to let you know that I will retire from my position as the Metadata
Librarian for Hebraica and Judaica at Stanford University Libraries during the
mid- to late Spring, 2021. The past thirty-one years of the sharing of
learning, knowledge and professional practices among our community have been
extraordinary. I am not sure if such collegiality and synergies exist among
other library communities.

So many of the professional relationships that I developed over this period
have crossed over into personal friendships that will continue to last long
after I officially leave.

My warmest wishes, appreciation and thanks to the entire Association of Jewish

before the students. Alas, present circumstances do not allow this, so I put
together a website with examples of the concepts/books being discussed. It's
openly available, and relies (where possible) on IIIF technology to allow

Obviously, the site was created for a specific classroom context (as reflected

Dear Elliot,

Thank you so much for your kind words. Indeed we both had our beginnings with
AJL the same convention. It seems and is so long ago. I have always enjoyed
and learned from our professonal and personal friendships.

Your commitment to AJL has always been a source and inspiration.

My warmest and best wishes.

Dear Heidi,

Mazel-tov on your upcoming retirement. You have been such a strong and very
active member and supporter of AJL for over three decades. Your contributions,
especially in your realms of expertise, notably cataloging and metadata, have
been too numerous to begin to list. You have also been very helpful in AJL, at
Stanford, and way beyond in providing answers outside of your "niche" as well
by presenting timely and useful
information on research, humanities, and social sciences reference inquiries
among others. You were one of the first people I met at my very first AJL
Conference (née Convention) back in 1991 in Miami Beach, and it was always a
pleasure to see you each year at subsequent annual gatherings at which I always
learned something unique and valuable from your presentations and just from
casual conversations.

I hope that you will stay active in AJL where your many contributions have
always benefited your colleagues and the Association immeasurably. I greatly
appreciate having had the opportunity to work with you over the years and value
your friendship as well as your collegiality. I wish you great success upon
whatever roads you take going forward.

All the very best,
Elliot

Congratulations!!

This is very exciting. Kudos to Univ Penn, you Arthur and other staff and
faculty, for recognizing the value and importance of the rapidly growing
intersection of digital humanities technology and Jewish Studies. Emily's role
is so crucial in guiding current and future scholars to utilize these tools to
discover, visualize and evaluate relationships, and ways of maneuvering and
modeling data that previously remained hidden.

2021-03-19 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear Kristin,

Thank you very much reaching out to me. Based on what I saw on the digital
version I do not think that is matches what we have Stanford.

I would like to compare mine to the 1878 edition held by the German National
Library but I cannot seem to bring up a digital copy via their available link
in the catalog record.

Do you know any staff people working with their Judaica and Hebraica
collections that I might get in touch with ?

Dear Heidi,

I just checked the catalogue of the German National Library (DNB). They don't
have a physical copy of the 1879 edition, only a digital one which actually
comes from the NLI. It belongs to larger digital collection called
"Deutsch-Jüdisches Kulturerbe : Digitalisate der National Library of Israel",
which was a project celebrating the 50 year anniversary of diplomatic relations
between Germany and Israel.

You can find the digital version via the NLI
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nli.org.il/en/books/NNL_ALEPH002103146/NLI__;!!KGKeukY!lsl3wbByt5LM8g9W_iFBrPtknzY6DjsljmJO_iLmhdzAce5-QkTHZ5-0n6HSd0J4zX0$

I dont unterstand why the DNB doesn't provide access, it's in public domain.

Best regards,
Kerstin

[ha-Safran] help identifying Purim shpil

2021-03-17 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I have in hand a photocopy of a Purim shpil "אחשורוש שפיל" laid in a Turkish
Jewish calendar that has no relationship to the work. The work appears to lack
a title page or any other identifying information. I am taking the title from
the caption.

In looking at OCLC, NLI I believe that it may be from the press of Necheles in
Lviv and printed in 1876 or 1879?

If your institution has a copy of this please contact me (privately if
preferred). I believe that NLI, YIVO and the German National Library have
copies. Not sure about other libraries.

Thanks, Heidi

[ha-Safran] Wikidata used to describe Stanford University Libraries Israeli Yiddish poster collection

2021-04-12 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,
I want to alert you to a new blog post that has appeared on the Digital
Yiddish Theater Project website
(https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://web.uwm.edu/yiddish-stage/wikidata-yiddish-theatre-posters-and-the-world__;!!KGKeukY!hc_Yy01kpe5-68IAOGa6ct2ZqOpv8CQK4nCK8tQNAy5Ac4yIYTbelZPhw18EBQ023JE$
). This post describes how Wikidata (a new and increasingly popular
technology for describing cultural heritage materials) can enable libraries,
museums, and other cultural institutions to get their data and collections
available, discoverable, and reusable on the web.
Hopefully, the work that I briefly describe will encourage our colleagues who w
ork in Judaica libraries and archives to experiment with Wikidata in describing
their own unique collections.
Sincerely, Heidi G. Lerner

Dear all,

I’m wondering if you can help one of my faculty to get an article (actually a
series of articles) that appeared in the American Hebrew journal ha-Do’ar
(הדואר) in vol. 5 (1926), issue 12, from p 20 on. It is the memoir of a Polish
Jewish writer called Mordechai David Brandstetter. We were not able to locate
these specific articles in sources to which we have access to. Any help would
be appreciated.

[ha-Safran] Seder Hagadah shel Pesaḥ (Yaari no. 2552)

2022-07-01 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I am cataloging a Hagadah that lacks a date but I believe is a match for Yaari
2552. I do not have a copy of Yaari on hand so I would greatly appreciate if
someone could snap a picture of no. 2552 and send it to me.

The pagination of the item in hand ends at verso leaf 32 (page 61). If you have
a copy of Yaari 252 in your library, I would be much appreciative if you could
send me pictures of the title page and last page.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide.

[ha-Safran] documentation on cataloging manuscripts in non-Latn scripts

2022-11-04 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I have been asked to discuss cataloging practices and guidelines for
manuscripts and manuscript codices in non-Latin scripts. I have not been able
to locate online any such documentation that is dedicated specifically to
non-print, unique items that are handwritten.

I am most eager to learn if any of you are familiar with such a resource(s).
These can be either internal documentation or a standard that has been
developed that serves a similar function to the PCC Guidelines for Creating
Bibliographic Records in Multiple Character Sets.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide.

Re: [ha-Safran] Question about Ethiopian-Israeli author Daniel Belete or Baltha

2023-08-02 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Hi Katalin,

This can be tricky because he writes in both Hebrew and Amharic, I would
follow this instruction since he writes in two non-Latin script languages:

If a name is found in more than one non-preferred script, transliterate it
according to the scheme for the original language of most of the works as noted
in RDA 9.2.2.5.3.

Looking at his website
"https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://beletebooks.co.il/**I/*__;15LXnNeo15nXlC8!!KGKeukY!wpMwNOwovehIP3hbn2GXa9az21xthK4Lj-3KoNYujy6Be7lpYhDc2HFlbJrKttT5qW2bMvQjYEi52-NVVkGf37w$
"; it appears that more of his books are in Hebrew than Amharic.

So: I would establish his name according to the Hebrew, with variant form(s) in
needed in Hebrew and Amhari. If you find a form also in Latin script that
changes things a bit: if you find a complete form in Latin script that complies
with one of the guidelines in LC-PCC PS 9.2.2.5.3.

Based on the above, I would establish the name as
Belete, Daniel, 1969- (based on romanized form found in Wikidata)
With references from:

  1. Beleṭeh, Daniyel, 1969-
  2. בלטה, דניאל, 1969-
  3. 2. AlA-LC systematic romanized form of Amharic form of name
  4. 3. Amharic form of name

These are just my thoughts. Perhaps my colleagues have found a better
alternative?

Best, Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran] help identifying work, manifestation

2024-02-09 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I am cataloging remotely what I believe is a pastiche of at least two different
editions of the prayers for Shabat. The manifestation that I am working on
would have been put together at least before 1926. The volume lacks any kind of
publication or title information. I could not locate an online version of any
of the printings.

My first hunch is that at least some of it comes from a multivolume set (5
volumes?) published by Henry Frowde in London, edited by Moses Gaster, David de
Sola. The text is in Hebrew and English on facing pages. I may be completely
off track on this.

My hope and request is that at least one of you could supply me images of the
following page numbers of volume 1. There are several printings (hard to say if
they all match). I would like to see pages 44-45,129-128, 130, 163-164,
171-172, 181-182. All or some, or even one of these pages could give me some
guidance.

Any help that you can provide would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Heidi Lerner

[ha-Safran] help with bibliographic question:( Pagination)

Seder Tefilot le-moʻadim tovim ḳahal ḳadosh Sefarad

Be-ʼAmśṭerdam : ǂb Be-vet ʻImanuʼel Benveniśte, ǂc 418 [1658].

I would like some help with determining the pagination.

I do not have easy access to:

Hebrew typography in the Northern Netherlands, 1585-1815 : historical
evaluation, and descriptive bibliography / . Fuks and R.G. Fuks-Mansfeld.

I am fairly certain that there is a bibliographic description of the work.

If any of you can get ahold of this two-volume set without effort, and see if

pagination.

[ha-Safran] Herrn Rabbiner Dr. Max Rosenberg

2024-06-12 Thread Heidi G Lerner via Hasafran
Dear safranim,

I have been trying to identify a Max(?) Rosenthal who wrote some Jewish
liturgical choral music. Some of his compositions appear in the collection of
the conductor and musicologist Eric Mandell. Date of activity would be late
19th century-early 20th century. The handwriting is fairly difficult to
decipher, and it might also be Mar.(?), Mr.(?). One of the compositions is
dated 1904.

I found the above reference in a record for an archive held by the National
Library/Central Archives of the Jewish people.

I am fairly certain that the composer of the synagogue of the compositions that
I have seen are not by the well-known composer Mortiz Rosenthal.

If any of you have any ideas who the above Rabbi/composer might be I would be
most appreciative to know.

Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Heidi Lerner
