offtopicAnd you are probably the same people that complain about 
windows security.  UAC is actually very helpful against malware/viruses, 
and really after you install your software, there is no reason to have 
it off.  I hardly ever have to hit a continue on my home machines 
(except if there is an update to the software).  Now at work its 
disabled because it severely slows me down having to hit continue every 
time I want to open a MMC console of some sort.  It doesnt require a 
password, but its better than nothing (and if it required a password 
everytime even more people would turn it off). /offtopic

I wrote a small batch file that renames the gameinfo.txt, runs the
update command, deletes the new gameinfo.txt, then renames the old one
back to gameinfo.txt.  Works swell and I dont ahve to remember to do
anything.

Do the updates HAVE to overwite this file?  Its a small
inconvenience to have to save a copy and write over it everytime.  I
have forgotten on more than one occasion and because I use metamod
and sourcemod none of my plugins load and I have to go back and
reboot the server.  I know its not a huge issue but it would be nice
not to have to do this on every update.

My updater works fine...dunno.

Anways, Im not sure if it was this update or one of the previous (I just
noticed it this morning), but the server menu bar now shows the server
name instead of Source Dedicated Server.  That is awesome!  Thank you

8)  Servers that are running that new plugin, which lies about the total
number of available slots.there's 32 slots but 24 are advertised!!!

And beating a dead horse wont resurrect him.  I ran a low grav server,
and they took away that cvar.  Our community is pissed, but you dont see
me sending out a gazillion emails.  Valve will never respond, just like
they havent in the past.  If they dont respond, then their is no
problem.  Like I said, get over it.  People sending emails isnt going to
do anything.

WRONG!  We were running a beta low grav server until the update or two
before the final release (the same one that killed 32 player servers).

You dont have to run a vanilla server...just one that doesnt hack the
dll in memory (or use a hacked dll).

have just taken away our access to it (for now anyways).

just changed the master server list to filter out anything reporting in at

That's not strictly true at all! First off it would be nearly impossible to
kill by a specific mod - the mod's could easily just change their signatures

I fixed this by moving hldsupdatetool.exe to a new folder, then running
it (still was pointed at the same install).  Dunno why, but then it
worked.  Must be something to do with the clientregistry.blob or
something.  You could try just deleting that file.

as far as i know - empty servers dont change maps. i had this (and as long

I'm not sure if that's specific to the Orange box engine though, I seem to
recall the same thing happening on my CS servers.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but if the server is empty
the timelimit will run until its out, and then it will wait to change the
map until someone has joined the server.

The -retry command doesnt work.  It kills the tool as soon as it errors out.

The only time I've seen that error with imagecfg, I was able to get around
it by using the full path to the executable:

imagecfg -a 0x1 D:\tf2_2fort\orangebox\srcds.exe

That's weird because I just did a test and imagecfg did


properly force srcds.exe to whatever CPU I chose. Here's my

1  2  Mani still mostly works.  Sourcemod is very stable and there are
a bunch of plugins for it.  It works for our servers.  Think of it as
amxmodx for the source engine.  TF2 is a new source engine.  The plugin
interface is broken in it and the sdk hasnt been updated to fix it.  So
nobody is able to load any kind of plugins.  Yay =(

Port for the new source engine is -port.  I had +port but it gave an
error.  Just a little tidbit I though I would pass on.  So use this:

C:\Servers\SrcDS\Servers\orangebox\srcds.exe -console -game tf +map
ctf_2fort +maxplayers 10 +ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -port 27015

Substitute your info for ip and port.

I know with a winblows 2003 server  2003 web addition, The wads didn't want
to download but with my fedora 3,4,5 and 6 boxes sv_downloadurl works
perfectly without adding any other mime types.



That's kind of what I'm seeing.  The .wad's, .bmp's, .wav's, etc...
all download correctly, but the client reports the .mdl files cannot be
downloaded.  So far if I redirect to the apache server under linux
everything works fine.  On the Win2k3 webserver, I've added all the file
extentions as MIME types as application/octet-stream.  The funny thing is
another test client (Buddy I called) downloads everything and loads the
map but there is evidence they are missing models (checkerboard textures
on some items).  At this point I need to clear the client of all non-
standard maps and add more logging to see if it's even being contacted.

The models that do not download on the client do download via IE
or Firefox if the full URL is entered, which makes me think the client
has a configuration issue.



I have a crapload of bandwidth and everything all setup, If you want to, you
can use my URL for your downloads until you get yours figured out.   ;)



I do appreciate that.  If you wouldn't mind, could you send me
personal e-mail with the URL?  I won't use it for a production box (you
pay for that bandwidth after all, and I won't leech it) but your webserver
would make a perfect place to compare results with vs. my own.

I know you could do that...but we want to enforce only certain models so
that people arent using fullbright models etc.  My assumption is valve
really never thought of this scenario...I didnt either until I started
adding stuff to the list.

allow more than 1player models?  I mean if you drop the models into the
models folder and do crc check, you can only do 1 set since they will
overwrite each other if you drop more than 1 in.  Is there a way to do
multiple allowed that I am missing?

The betas are awesome...nobody is disagreeing with that.  The point is
that a fairly major feature has been changed...and it wasnt even in the
changelog.  And then when asked about it, it was like an afterthought
Oh yeah...we removed that.  Our players just want to have fun and play
in a place where all things are equal (no rate hacking or regular hacks
etc).  They dont care if we have to run commands on them to do that.
However now we have completely lost the ability to do certain things.
All players see is that us server owners are taking away their fun and
complain (and sometimes leave).  They dont understand.  Valve doesn't
pay for servers, we do.  MY money is going into keeping valve alive (my
running servers lets people buy more games and they then have somewhere
to play).  Valve needs to realize this.  In their Infinite wisdom they
forget that without server operators, a mod dies.  There have been
plenty of mods that have come and gone, and because they only had
players (not server operators) behind them, they never took off.

We are waiting for valve to reply and tell us WTF is going on...but the
lack of a reply is a pretty good indication that they are giving us
operators a giant middle finger.

Amxbans doesnt work like that, it doesnt load every ban.  As a player
joins, it checks with the mysql server to see if they are banned.  It is
an awesome tool, plus it makes it easy to figure out whos banned.  I
would HIGHLY recommend it.

We have a relatively large ban list on our dedicated CS 1.6 server,
approximately 124KB.   When the map changes, it seems like it takes the
hl1 engine about 25 seconds to chunk through it, causing the server to
be unavailable for players to join until it finishes this process.
Players that were currently connected, are waiting for the nextmap to
start during this window.   CPU use jumps to 100% locked while this is
happening.

Does anyone know if this is a known issue with cs / hl1, or if possibly
if I have a misconfiguration of the server?   I've talked with another
server op buddy, and he said he had the same problem, and fixed it by
reducing his banfile size.  I really don't want to do this, as these are
valid bans of bastage players we don't want returning to our server.

I'm looking at using a mySQL db (like amxbans, or something we custom
write) to store bans in, if there's no way to get around this beyond
trimming the banned file, however, I'd rather not externalize the ban
list if I can get the server configured to not take so long to process
the banned.txt file.

Your having problems with a new version of windows and you want to move to
linux for less hassle?  Good luck with that.
You guys need to give Manufacturers some time.  Vista was just released today.
Give it a few months and the drivers/support will be there.  Same thing
happened when XP came out with its Crazy new security.  Now its the standard
that everyone loves.  Give Vista a year and it will be the standard just as XP
is now.  Mark my words on it ;)
I run my steam games on Vista just fine.  I dont have an insane sound card
either though.   Now Im just waiting for Nvidia to get SLI working again so my
other video card doesnt get any more jealous =D

Since we no longer can run commands on the client its not possible to do
server redirection.  Im sure I am not alone missing this key feature on
the DS.  Would it be possible for you to add in the abilty for servers
to execute the connect command on the client or something similar?

Their API is useless.  There is a reason nobody uses it...it has very

rc11 or install the wuhs plugin that blocks a VERY serious flaw in
srcds.  A single command can indeed crash any source server.

My server will crash 1 or 2 times in 24hrs generating minidumps (which i do not 
know how to read .mdmp files) and ServerChecker cancels any srcds/memory error 
popup windows and restarts srcds unatended.  I was previously running a .bat 
file from srcds.com however on srcds errors you have to clear the error window 
manually before the server restarts.  I also tried OGS Watcher however it 
seemed to lock up on srcds errors and would not restart the service, nor would 
it give me a console window.  I know that Mani is the problem, however i can't 
stop using it since GunGame requires it for map voting and GunGame sounds.  
Until Mani is fully updated or on a new version i'm stuck and am very happy 
that ServerChecker's got my back!

We run a public and a private server on a Windows 2003 server box with 1gb
of ram and an iis site that gets 147k hits per day.  We rarely have to
reboot this machine (cept for windows updates) and we also run it system
timer unlocked.

I also run another server with 12 hlds/srcds processes.  All servers have
fast downloads enabled and get served from iis running on the same machine.
It runs hlstats on a few and generates res files and psychostats
automatically.  I have very little problems with this machine.

Have you considered that maybe you just suck ass with windows and that is
why you cant run a stable system with it?  Don't blame the operating system
for your lack of skills.  I admit I am not the best with linux but I do like
it and have used it in the past.  But this IS the windows hlds list...

Get a clue.

steambans client.

I wish Sharedbans wouldnt have merged with them =/

As long as one server is running it on the machine it will kill the entire
servers ability to verify the steamid's.  A reboot of the machine will fix the
problem.

Take off steambans and you wont have another problem with it.  It sucks
because its been a known bug for at least a month (known that steambans causes
it) and the steambans team claims they fixed it but its obvious they havent.
Ever since I removed it last month I havent had a single problem with the
steamid verification error.  Its too bad because they block a lot of players
coming into the servers.
The only other option (and I didnt test this) would be to reboot the machine
everyday.  Since that clears up the problem when it starts, I would assume
that would allow you to keep running hte plugin and not get the errors.  But
who wants to reboot their machine every day?

servers!  The problem is related to the client, not the server.  The
client needs to logout of steam and then back in, then all is well.

I have several accounts (my whole family plays) and I think the steam
servers get nervous every once in a while and just flake
the auth for
the user, forcing them to sign back in.

Scott, I have noticed this problem on my server also.  In fact, I have
noticed this problem from my client when I attempt to connect to other
servers!  The problem is related to the client, not the server.  The
client needs to logout of steam and then back in, then all is well.

I have several accounts (my whole family plays) and I think the steam
servers get nervous every once in a while and just flake
the auth for
the user, forcing them to sign back in.

How does it actually work? I am using -heapsize 131072 for my HLDSs, its
reserving RAM but not really taking more then 60mb. I tryed different kind
of this value, but dont really see a difference. So the questions are:

-Will it take as much RAM as it needs if i wont set it?
-Does it make difference for server FPS or for speed in map change?

I got a lot of memory in my server, so i just want to know how to tweak it
for best performance.

I am using Windows, but insteresting if its working the same on linux.

[hlds] HLDS has issues only on one port?

Ok...I have been pulling my hair out for a week now trying to track down
why our server suddenly just goes unresponsive (yet another dod server
on a different port has no issues).  I tried a fresh install with no
configuration done to it and the same thing (no 3rd party
mods...nothing).  I finally figured out that it is the port.  If I
change the port, the server runs just fine.  Change it back and it
becomes unresponsive every 30 seconds or so.  This server has been
running just fine until last week.  I checked to make sure nothing was
attacking the port it was on (27016...sport is set to 27013).  I turned
the firewall completely off and it does the same thing.  I also checked
all the ports used on the machine to make sure nothing else was trying
to use that port.  Also, sometimes the server just gets mad.  It wont go
secure and it says on startup connection to steam servers failed.
Then it proceeds to give people errors about verifying steamids when
they try to join.  Although sometimes it works.  Now mind you that if I
simply change the port to 27015, everything works as it should with no
problems (I would rather not change the port if at all possible since
the server has been on that port for way too many years).  Does anybody
have any other ideas for me?  I really am at a loss.  Help.

If your pings are high then your connection isnt that great.  Either
that or your CPU's are getting maxed out.

And what I am trying to say I don't believe it's possible what your
asking. Pings are not really effected by tickrates all that much, it's
about server response.

I believe 600-700 is the most your going to get out SCRDS and with
that,
game is extremely responsive, can't get much better then that.

Our server had a clean install of 64bit FC5 last week and that

over 900fps and most people were whinging about choke.  We

You have to balance out the fact that many players have stupid rates

No confusion on my part...only confusion (or a better word would be a
lack of information) on your part.  Some people are pretty jaded as to
whats available out there.  That is why I visit cheat forums regularly.
If you dont, how are you to know what you should be looking for?
Anyways, this is a script that allows for no-recoil.  It is NOT a key
that actives a cheat.  This type of script will NEVER be detected by
things like VAC because VAC looks for hooks into the code but these
never hook in.  Why?  Because they are scripts and scripts are allowed
by the HL engine.  They combine multiple commands together that then act
like a cheat without ever having to install anything.  Like I said, I
will install a few and come on your server.  Lets see how fast people
call hax  Then I can say its ok because its just a script.

Like I said...tell me your server...Ill come pwn everyone and watch them
call [EMAIL PROTECTED]  I promise it will only be a script (there are many many

them out there).  I bet within 5 minutes of me playing people will be up
in arms.  Were they meant to be changed?  Yes, but not in the manner
they are being done.  By stringing the commands together you are
essentially creating a cheat.  I will NOT post the hacks here as I know
as soon as I do some unscrupulous individuals will use them somewhere
and I do not want to be blamed for it.  There are a ton out there.  Use
google.  You dont have to report back...we all know they are out there
already.

I didn't misunderstand you, I think we are just thinking of scripts in
different ways. You seem to think that all a script does is control
keystrokes but I can write a scripts that changes my view from right to left
hand and it has nothing to do with keystrokes, I am manipulating game
variables.
Controlling the recoil has nothing to do with the server. You should be able
to find one with a quick google search and see what it does. It basically
pulls your gun down as you fire. There is still recoil but it is controlled.
Some say this method isn't very effective but I have seen people run through
a server using this.

Depends...you want it for source or HL1?  For source you can use
Hlstatsx.  For HL1 there are a few, but nothing steller.  The one that I
used to have was built on amxx and used a db.  It would be really easy
to make an amxx plugin that takes all chat and tosses it to its own
file.  I could even probably write it for you if thats what you are
looking for.  Let us know.

Hlstatsx included this in the newest version.  The only problem is that
you can see sequential chat...its based per player (you go to the
players stats then click on chat log).  Good luck finding something!

You changed the IP address to your servers ip address right?  Also, make
sure you dont have any other servers running on that port.  Lastly if
you have a firewall make sure all the relevent ports are open.

Well that depends...was it purposely put into the code to do that?  If
not, then its an exploit/glitch and I would say thats unfair as that is
not the way the game was meant to be played.  For example, in DOD:S
right now there is the stupidest glitch where its really easy to get an
unarmed model (so you look like a scarecrow moving through the map).
You basically float around as you dont make any noise etc.  Only the
axis can do it as far as I know and the only way to kill them is to
shoot their feet.  People purposely do that then run up and block flag
caps etc.  They cant shoot, but they can cause a lot of chaos.  Is that
fair?  Its not meant to be part of the game but by your account it would
be ok to do.  Just something to masticate on =D

If the use is not limited to certain players and no downloading of
nefarious software is involved why do you consider this unfair?  Because
not everyone knows how to do it?  You would have to look at every

pros made up of this sort of thing?  Tricks you know that others don't

Yes they do.  Take a look at the forums.  They actually have more
because teh community is MUCH more helpfull.  Like I said, if you cant
find something that you already have its not hard to port it to AMXX.
They both use the Pawn (formerly called small) language.  A few of the
functions are different but essentially they are the same.

teh GIGANTIC exploit in argentan?   Im sick of all the people who are
exploiting it.  I thought it would have been fixed by now.  If valve
doesnt know about it I have a ton of Screenies that show it.  Very easy
to do.

I understand that Alfred...but whats worse...bad behavior or a server
that doesnt work the way it was intended.  Its kinda like not moving to
the newest Service pack of windows right away.  Its a better idea to
wait and see what breaks before you go and update all your machines
right?  If there is one thing I have learned in my days as a Microsoft
admin at my job is that being on the bleeding edge of updates/new
releases usually gets you in trouble.  Right now I am glad that I didnt
update our servers so I can have a peacefull night instead of running
around searching for fixes.

website and the user in question is not listed there but is

I have not had any complaints from visitors to my CS server about this
type of behavior.

Although, I did get visited by the same problem mentioned by Dan last
week.  The maps on my server changed.  What I noticed was outstanding
updates from the system had yet to be applied.  My guess is this error
happens whenever they update the maps on the content servers and that
checksum information is passed to our game servers.

The problem is that it doesnt put anything into the event log, or logs.
It just quits,  creates a mdmp and thats it.  Now unless you are a
programmer (and I am not) it is not exactly easy to figure out the mdmp
files.  Trust me, I have tried.  I am MCSA certified (on my way to mcse)
so I am not exactly dumbfounded when it comes to Windows.  So when valve
helps us to help them, maybe we can include more things =/

I run both Linux and Windows servers, and hence subscribe
to both lists.  In the Linux list you'll see posted logfile exerpts,
error messages, core dumps, stuff the dev team can use to fix a
problem.  You'll also see troubleshooting steps taken, various
library versions that Source depends upon, etc...

In the windows list you see Fix this.

I suspect the problem has been so long in the offering
because Valve can't reliably reproduce it.  Help them.  They're
a small team, why not put the event logs and any Dr. Watson's and
server logfiles on a webserver and help them out by providing the
information they need to start working the problem?

Fix this leaves a lot of leeway in isolating the problem.
Without repeatable results, Valve would have to guess at the cause
and risk ruining all servers with their attempted fix.  I don't
think any of us want to go down that road.

Thats fine...but how do we know if its a 3rd party problem or a valve
problem if we cant see why it crashed?

  I run both Linux and Windows servers, and hence subscribe
to both lists.  In the Linux list you'll see posted logfile exerpts,
error messages, core dumps, stuff the dev team can use to fix a
problem.  You'll also see troubleshooting steps taken, various
library versions that Source depends upon, etc...

  In the windows list you see Fix this.

  I suspect the problem has been so long in the offering
because Valve can't reliably reproduce it.  Help them.  They're
a small team, why not put the event logs and any Dr. Watson's and
server logfiles on a webserver and help them out by providing the
information they need to start working the problem?

  Fix this leaves a lot of leeway in isolating the problem.
Without repeatable results, Valve would have to guess at the cause
and risk ruining all servers with their attempted fix.  I don't
think any of us want to go down that road.

We use hlstatsx for source, psychostats for HL1.  Works swell.

HLStats is not a plugin. It consists of a Perl module that receives

[hlds] Bans Keep getting reset

Ok, ever since dod:s has come out I have been fighting with this
problem, and I cant figure it out.  Every day or two our bans get
erased.  I thought it was when the server crashed, but thats not it
because I saw it happen when the server hadnt crashed at all.  I have
this in my server.cfg:

exec mani_server.cfg
exec listip.cfg
exec banned.cfg
exec banned_users.cfg
writeid
writeip

But nothing seems to work.  I changed the rcon so only I knew it for a
few days and it STILL happened.  I have searched every forum known to
man and still cant figure it out.  Anyone have any ideas?

Wish amxbans worked on source =/

They are infact being written to the source files (banned_users.cfg,
havent banned anyone by IP addy so dont know on that one).  It just
randomly disappears though =/
