As for how this is going to affect Community

some info as well. I don;t think they mean "12 v 12
lobbies", I
think they simply mean that using the "casual" quickplay
will send
you to a server with players of similar skill levels.

What I'm curious about is this:

1. How will this affect community servers - will people
still be
able to direct connect to their favorite server if that
server is
in the quickplay pool? (if not, I see this as the final
nail in
the coffin for community servers).

2. What about servers that host a mix of stock/custom
maps? Will
the system only "level up" players on stock maps...if
so, this

will further reduce an already dwindling supply of custom
map servers.

Also, what is the game going to do if a player drops

will

backfill players, but the update page mentions nothing
about this.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about:

Pardon my French, but sorry, bitching about something that has
absolutely jack shit to do with server issues won't get anything
accomplished. Trying to attract attention with that subject line doesn't
help matters either, it only makes you look like a fool.

Also, /*NEWSFLASH*/: the 75%/25% split has been the norm for all three
of Valve's flagship titles ever since the inception of the Workshop.
TF2, Dota 2, CS:GO. People that make items for one or more of those and
manage to get them shipped are familiar this exact same split, and
they're fine with it. It's nothing new to anyone that's even bothered
with learning who takes what, and apparently, this split is breaking
news and suddenly it's now unfair when nobody has really complained
about it for a little short of half a decade (October 2011).

Take it to any of the complaint threads on /r/steam, /r/pcmasterrace,
Gabe's emergency AMA thread in /r/gaming, or the equivalent other forum
of your choosing. I'm not in full agreement with this stuff myself, but
HLDS isn't the place to vent about these types of things.

what to expect in the upcoming update or must we wait until it's

Re: [hlds] Rethinking the community quickplay ban

2015-02-05 Thread wickedplayer494
I fully agree. I've seen some of my favorite servers drop like flies
over the past few months (and by extension the last 2 years), and the
assimilation of players into Valve-hosted servers is downright alarming.
Having a Valve-dominated server ecosystem only makes sense for three
things: Dota 2, CS:GO competitive matchmaking, and TF2 MvM Mann Up. It
doesn't make sense for PvP.

Truth be told, people are somewhat right about the game dying, but
only in some very, very specific components of the game, one of those
being community-run servers. Here's an example: TrashedGamers' Chicago
server. A few months ago, it would fill up every night with players.
Now? You're lucky to find even 4 people playing on a good night. This is
illustrated very well by the HLStatsX graphs for the server, found at
http://stats.trashedgamers.org. Here's an image for people browsing
very, very far into the future: http://i.imgur.com/u8FCWMJ.png

What happened to the days of picking a server yourself through the
browser? Is it /really/ that hard for the community? I think at this
point the only real solution is having to make people go through hoops
to get to quickplay. All it has done is open a can of worms, which Valve
has tried to clean up after (with the Policy of Truth memo long ago from
Fletcher and other measures), but people were still trying to cheat the
system, which forced the hand of Valve. Reducing its exposure would make
it not worthwhile for people to keep trying to cheat the system. There
should be a better emphasis placed on the server browser. To make it as
usable, make scores visible in the browser, and let users decide for
themselves (unless they go through those hoops to get to quickplay).
That way people can pick a server that they believe looks good to them,
instead of chancing that the server they get placed on looks good. While
we're at it, add server grouping to the browser, so say if someone wants
to view all the servers Organization A has, because they look better
than Organization B, they can pop open all of A's servers instead of
needing to scroll through all of B's servers, leaving them hidden.
Similar named servers that aren't grouped together by the server
operator would be given a score penalty.

To the TF2 team,

It has now been over a year since the decision to essentially ban
community servers from quickplay by defaulting to official ones. Here
are some facts of what has happened since then.

- Player gain dropped 4% from the year before.
- UGC highlander teams dropped 17%
- Highly reduced map variety from community servers.
- Even top non-quickplay servers have drastically fewer players than
in 2013.

You may have guaranteed new players a vanilla experience, but this is
ruining the experience for the rest.

Maybe nothing is being done because you do not see enough complaints
about this from reddit or spuf. This is because the problem is obvious
when someone connects to a pay to win server while it is not as
obvious when a server is dying over the span of several months because
official ones are getting all the new players.

Most of the people that I talked to even knew about this change so the
thought about complaining about it never crossed their minds. But just
because they never knew about it doesn't mean it wasn't a problem.

I hope you realize that this change is doing more harm than good. It
may have stopped some complaints but this is hurting TF2 in the long run.

I would argue that it is related to third party dedicated servers.

The people left in charge of TF2 have been out of touch with
players for a while and only now is it becoming more obvious. We
face the brunt of these bad policies because we don't have a
stream of new mann co store fodder from quickplay. A few years ago
the thought of making a major patch locked behind an uncraftable
purchase would not even have crossed their minds.

Despite 3 major non-MvM patches, global player counts are again on
their way to declining back to beginning of the year levels. With
the amount of developer time spent on the game, TF2 should not be
1/5th the size of CS. I've seen many quality servers die out this
year. Custom servers are also dying because new players aren't
being exposed enough to the fact that custom servers exist.

[hlds] Warning: AlliedModders has discovered a data breach - immediately change your passwords

2014-06-11 Thread wickedplayer494

https://forums.alliedmods.net/announcement.php?f=130a=49

This week we discovered a data breach that affects all our registered users.

On June 7th we discovered some anomalous files on our webserver, and
began investigating where they came from. From what we can tell, on
March 16th, an administrator's account was accessed by an unidentified
attacker. The attacker used an obscure feature in the forum control
panel to upload arbitrary code to our webserver. Then, the attacker
downloaded a portion of the forum database. The breached data contained
three pieces of information:

* Account names
* E-mail addresses
* Hashed passwords
* Last login IP address

Unfortunately our forum software (vBulletin) used a password hashing
scheme that is considered insecure by modern standards. We are therefore
recommending that all our users change their passwords as soon as
possible. If your AlliedModders password was used on other services, we
recommend that you change your password on those services as well.

We do not believe the attacker compromised our systems in a way that
would expose private messages, plaintext passwords, real names, or
otherwise intercept private traffic. We also believe the March 16th
incident was isolated in nature. Nonetheless, it is serious enough to
warrant immediate action.

We are deeply apologetic for this incident - it's a black mark on what
had been a perfect track record for over ten years. As a result we've
attempted to identify and address each of the weaknesses that
contributed to this attack. In particular:
* We have modified vBulletin to use more secure password hashing
(bcrypt, instead of md5).

* We are now restricting the privileges of all administrator accounts.
* We have restricted vBulletin's file system privileges and added
intrusion detection.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience. If you have any questions,
please contact us atsecur...@alliedmods.net.

update. But, my Steam client today said that it needed to
download and install a TF2 update. So, I let that commence, and
went to check my TF2 servers.

On the server side, it looked like there was about ~100-MB of
stuff to download, but it errored-out. Then, I noticed the
client-side update errored-out also.

I ran the update on the server-side again, and this time it said
Success! App '232250' already up to date. - as if there was no
longer any mystery ~100-MB update? Thankfully, I didn't run this
against my production servers yet - just a test instance.

The client-side update keeps cycling between Updating and

I am hoping this is not a repeat of what happened to
Counter-Strike the other day - or anything remotely similar?

suggests that:
- Initial infection from client to server is in
client_init.lua, which
downloads server.cfg (looking for the RCON password to
continue the
exploit) and uploads engine_win32.dll
- Once the server runs the server_infect.lua code, it writes back
engine_win32.dll and does a SendLua to install client_init.lua

If you've firewalled off RCON (as you should have) then this
particular version of the exploit won't hurt you. However,
there is
definitely some sort of bypass for the net_file blacklist.

If you want to point fingers at anyone, point fingers at the owners of
large server chains (ie Nighteam, saigns, WonkaGaming (are they even
still around?), bets.tf, etc). Quickplay has probably been killing many
other small servers as well before Valve introduced the official server
option due to the fact that these chains literally crap out servers and
smear it all over the planet.

Thanks Valve. Enjoy your cash.

Re: [hlds] l4d2 available via steamcmd?

2013-06-15 Thread wickedplayer494 .
There is no such thing as a TF2-specific mailing list. All three
hlds_announce, hlds, and hlds_linux mailing lists encompass DoD:S, HL2:DM,
CS:S, TF2, L4D2, *and* other games (such as TWI's Rising Storm). The only
L4D2-specific list would be L4Dmapper (see:
https://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/). It's pretty much all or
nothing.

Seeing as you're sending from a Gmail account, you're more than capable of
setting up a filter that auto-archives any messages but stuff relating to
TF2.

There is a page showing the list of supported servers, and l4d/l4d2 is not
one it, but I don't know if that list is current or not. You can look here:

 https://developer.**valvesoftware.com/wiki/Steam_**

And see the server IDs for l4d2 server files, 560/561/562. I try to
downlowd them via steamcmd and get no subscription error.

Re: [hlds] Steam is suspending accounts without reason

2013-01-27 Thread wickedplayer494 .
I think you need to use *your* head. The Steam forums are the most popular
forums for Steam discussions, so any issues would pop up there almost
instantly or relatively fast. How delusional do you have to be (if you're

Best you all can do is to not reply messages like this unless you have
something to contribute for. The matter is on the table now, if there is
any truth in this, it will come out.

I haven't seen or heard anything nor have the Steampowered forums, which

Re: [hlds] Serious new(?) TF2 bug involving infinite ubercharges of any type

2012-12-16 Thread wickedplayer494 .
BTW, Evan added me on Steam to discuss this. Not going to reveal too
much to avoid someone using the exploit with bad intentions.

He said that yes, the not sending usercmds part was right. But, as
some of you would remember, Valve fixed a bug where Medics could
infinitely uber themselves, but infinitely ubering someone else wasn't
fixed. Currently, the client handles the timing of ubercharges. They
end when powerplaytime clientticktime. clientticktime is only
updated when the client sends a usercmd. No usercmds being sent means
infinite ubercharges.

Packet manipulation could be used, among other methods which I won't reveal.

On Sun, Dec 16, 2012 at 8:14 PM, wickedplayer494 .
wickedplayer...@gmail.com wrote:
I was browsing /r/tf2 when I came across this video demonstrating
 infinite ubercharges of any type:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHUliYFjeQQ

The video's a bit long, so for those that don't have the time or CBA
to watch the whole thing, here's what I got from the video:

The Medic that's deploying the charge stops sending user commands
after the charge is deployed. The Medic can still use chat of both
kinds (voice and text), taunt, and use the voice command menu. An
external program can be used or packet flow to the server can be
 interrupted.

All classes (but other Medics due to their passive health regen
ability) can become infinitely charged, but some items will break the
charge (such as the Equalizer/Escape Plan when used). Another Medic
can break the charge just by healing you. Friendly payload carts and
dispensers will also break the charge as well.

There are two other scenarios in which the charge will break, but by

Reports on Reddit are noting that a lot of timer-like things are playing
animations backwards, such as the cloak meter on the face of the various
 Spy watches.

I've also been told that cloak meters for spy watches are reversed, but

I just saw my TF2 client update and spotted these update notes on the
 TF2 blog:

Updates to Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2:
Deathmatch have been released. The updates will be applied automatically
when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

 - Source Engine Changes (TF2, DoD:S, HL2:DM)
 * Fixed a client crash in the sound emitter

 - Team Fortress 2
 * Fixed a dedicated server hang in bot pathfinding
 * Fixed the tf_zombie entity crashing some servers

I assume that this is an optional update, since my server didn't
 auto-update.

Of course dedicated.so no longer exists since the Halloween update.
Strongly recommend Linux operators do not apply tonight's optional update.

 2012/8/18 Michael Tharp g...@partiallystapled.com

This is for a pvp server, as of version 1.1.2.5:

 If tf_mm_servermode = 0, everything is fine

 If tf_mm_servermode = 1 AND tf_mm_strict = 0 or 2, connections from
favorites are rejected with ad-hoc connections are not allowed

 If tf_mm_servermode = 1 AND tf_mm_strict = 1, connections from favorites
 work.

So, to workaround you can either turn off mm, or (ironically) set strict
 to 1.

server admins to control the maximum RCON packet size and whether or not
users get banned for exceeding that limit. The defaults reflect the
 existing behavior.

 - Fixed not being able to import custom spray images on Macs

 - Fixed Macs cancelling http map downloads that take longer than 30 seconds

I had to apply the optional update to our dedicated servers as weird
issues started happening ever since the clients received the update.
For example, different random sounds would play for the players on
the server when the spawn door would open etc. The issues did not
occur when I started a listen server from in-game.

We've released an optional update to Team Fortress 2. This update

updated so you will receive an update if you sync.

The note for the update is below.

Steam JUST died (is back up now), but people are still going crazy because
the item server is still having issues.

Our servers have been rebooted multiple times, but load-outs (and trading)
are borked for my community.is valve still doing something? Rebooting
the servers hasn't restored connection, so as a server owner, what can I do
 other than wait? Anything?

and I just run a master update, diff that, and apply it to all of my
servers. even when we were running 15 servers, i only had to do the
 download once.

Eventually, I'll see if it's faster if I just drive the 15 miles to the
 valve offices. :-)

No wonder so many people have your servers on their blacklists...

Either way guys, don't bother replying. Just leave them in a corner, and
Valve will deal with them as seen fit to them.

Re: [hlds] Day of Defeat: Source low textures + cl_ragdoll_physics_enable bug

2012-05-02 Thread wickedplayer494 .
strass, your issue is unrelated to what we're talking about. Except for the
occasional end-user's input (me included), the list is meant for issues
with servers.

Your best bet is to Google what's happening and post elsewhere other than
HLDS.

Well, most people have no idea about servers. But we're discussing about
the valves mailing list so let me say: i don't care about what most people
 do.
Whatever, the low textures are available in the menu and are still bugged.
I thought both shouldn't be that hard to fix - last but not least just the
developers can decide if they fix this.

There's lots of things that people change without it being in Valve's menu

show FPS counter in the menu).

 point across really :(

 2012/4/29 spendenanmich spendenanm...@web.de:
Bullet holes are red on wooden textures if using low textures.

Also there is a bug if using cl_ragdoll_physics_enable 0. Dead bodies
 will
  spawn in random position then.

Re: [hlds] Someones taking my server down

2012-03-29 Thread wickedplayer494 .
For the (D)DoS'ing, get a hold of your host and tell them the situation.
Also make sure to contact the abuse department of the ISP he's using.

For the crit hacking, I believe SourceMod Anti-Cheat has a module for that.

therefore killing the server and losing players. He did it last night and
now tonight, hes banned but is still managing to flood it or something,
changing the port of the server seems to work but I don't want to do that
seeing as people have it favourited and as soon as he finds out the new ip
he'll go for that. Anyone else had this and know a fix? He's also been crit
 hacking too.

 Thanks.
