To the best of my memory it was growing wild. Not planted in a
garden.

I realise the 1st pic is rather odd, making it appear to be floating.
The stem must have been hidden by the leaves.
Sadly these are the only pics I took.
I rather naively thought I would be able to id it with ease once I got

be important for id.. and ruling out costus...

Problems finding my posts.

Thank you for all help and advice.
I found the View Profile box... but only after searching back until I
found my last thread.

Putting Plantaholic Sheila in the search box works really well. Thank
you Gurcharan. Will use that way in future.

Now to try explain to Usha why I had 2 names.
When I 1st joined, I used our ordinary e mail and was mortified when
it appeared on screen as Howard Sadd and our e mail address as
hj.s***@tiscali.co.uk.

In Britain and other sites I use, the e mail addresses are ALWAYS
hidden to prevent spam etc. It was not rocket science to work out what
the *** stood for.

So, I set up a new e mail address, just to use here
as Plantaholic Sheila e mail luddite1***@tiscali.co.uk. Now the ***
are nor guesseable.

Being unused to having 2 e mail addresses for the first time in 5
years, I was not used to having to swap them over, and accidentally
sent a few threads under the old name. I tried to resign my old name
but that didn't work.

So humble apologies for the confusion.
I am old and a complete techno phobe!
I have made a real effort to get it right the past few posts!

Hope this explains the 2 names.

I think as this is a google site you have no choice in the way it is
set up.

By the way, I notice that you sometimes put ji after the name. What
does this mean please?

Thank you jui for the suggestion of Lagerstroemia parviflora

2011-11-09 Thread Plantaholic Sheila
Hi Shrikant,

I realise my pics are not always adequate and far from ideal.

I was a mere tourist seeing Sikkim for the very 1st time.
It was a fabulous, incredible 3 week trip, I loved every single
minute.
A am very keen gardener and plants person. An amateur. I am not and
never will be a botanist.

During this adventure I saw many many trees, shrubs and plants that I
had never encountered before.
I took many hundreds of pictures of the plants. ( As well as thousands
of the stunning scenery, people, temples, animals etc etc?)
I tried my best to get a few pics of each plant to give pointers to
id.

Sadly time did not allow for a 100% full pictorial record of every
plant, to include,a scale for size, bark, buds, flowers, fruits,
leaves, including whole specimen to show where it was growing.
Nor is my memory accurate enough to say now exactly the dimension of
the seed pod. I do remember at the time thinking it was large.

I am trying my best to learn. I am delighted to get it id as
Lagerstroemia.
I guess I will never know whether it is L. speciosa OR L. microcarpa
OR L. parviflora.
But if ever I come back I will take more care taking the pictures of
unknown plants.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my pics and to help.
Sheila.

[efloraofindia:93303] Re: TREE ID.........6th NOV 2011..........S.S.......045

2011-11-09 Thread Plantaholic Sheila
Thank you Ushadi for the clear explaination of ji.

I live in grey,damp Britain.
In South Wales. So not many exotic trees here! Hence my fascination
with all I saw.

I checked my pics folder from Sikkim. After editing and deleting
duplicates and rubbish images, I still have left 1400 ... just of the
plants!
My magical wee digital camera has changed my life.
I do take many many pics, and try to get good clear images for id
purposes.
Occasionally some that might be critical for id are just not clear
enough and get deleted.
Regards.
Sheila.

RE Ji after a persons name:

since you have been in India..  it would be easier for you to
understand than if you had never been to the country... so I'll try to
 say it here...

 Ji is an honorific..

we add it to mean you are respected...

In north india ... elders like a grandfather will even put ji after
the name of a grandchild...  and address the kid as Aap... aap we
reserve in hindi or gujarati  or Aapni in bengali  language(s)  for
elders only...    but that's the way it is in Punjab etc...

SECONDLY:   my sensibilities are/were just to call people by their
 first name...
but I have been getting indoctrinated in this way of addressing
 people ...
since I find  that it sets a tone of congeniality and respect...

esp because this medium of internet groups is really geared towards
short sentences and sometime curt scientific queries...
where people do not know each other , and it  takes a while to get to
 know people...

so its best to start out by respecting until friendships develop with
a few and you can do what you please or what your new found friend
 says you can do...

The tone of language of UTMOST geniality and courtesy is set by Mr.
Garg the owner of this group and
the tone of respect and mildness is set by  by Gurcharan ji who is the
elder statesman besides being a very precise taxonomist and font of
serious academic knowledge in this group...

 so we follow suit...
most of us are in  this group for the long haul.. so it behooves us
 to ...

may be you can  too... if  such is your intention...  so Sheila ji is
 it?

 ... RE lagerstomia:

I do not know where you are... but in southern california or southern
florida you'll fine the Lagerstomia planted as street trees esp in the
large mall parking lots and in highway medians...   dont stop on the
highway ... but in  mall parking lots... one can easily stop and take
pictures of all the plant parts that are IDEALLY needed to ID a
plant.. and in such cases you can keep going back for the seeds
etc...   and you'll get to classify your lagerstaomia.. from the
 pointers you got here...

 RE: photos

Its all in the mind set... once you get used to taking pictures of the
habit, stem, bark, leaf front and back, flower face and side...   plus
other features that strike you...  put a finger in the view somewhere
for a quick size guide... with a digital camera its a snap... does not
take that long... one to two minutes at the most...esp when
 traveling...

however takes longer , much longer if you want competition quality
photographs or for publication in high quality printed books...   but
most of our intention is for memory of a place or for id... so 5 - 6
pics of the features of a plant all one needs...

 hope this explained it...

Sheila and Ritesh I think I have discovered why your thread was
 broken...

Look at the the two titles

 Original thread:
 TREE ID.10/12/2011..S.S...058... Near
 LAVA. WEST BENGAL
 This  thread :
 TREE ID.10/12/2011. .S.S...058... Near
 LAVA. WEST BENGAL

 See the difference

After the date there are 9 dots and the line is broken... gap appears
 and then dots again...

that's why the google group program treated this as a different
 thread...
also the original font was times new roman and this thread title font
 is calibri.
Dont know if that also makes a  difference or not..

@SHEILA may I suggest that you not put any dots in the title, just
ordinary conventional numbers of space/gaps as per normal typing
norms, that should be it. It would be also good when the title /and
its links are used for further future reference : less space is used
 etc etc..

It is the beautiful, interesting young seed pods that I recognise from
Duabanga.
But I was not sure that this was the only tree which had these.
Which is why I was seeking confirmation.

This link shows the interesting fruits more clearly than my pics.

Number of corolla lobes is variable in Lasianthus (4-6).

over the world. Except hot tropical ones!

I am learning all the time and love to find plants that I have not
seen before.
I now have a very extensive picture library, (many taken in our own
garden) As well as wild flowers in the hedgerows.
I try to get a record of the leaves ,flowers , seeds and any other
interesting features through the changing seasons. I am fascinated by
the shape of leaves.
All pics are labelled with full latin name, and are a terrific aide
memoir when I try to help others on other forums to id their plants.
( It has become an addiction!)
I love it when a forum has experts and amateurs, such as myself, from
all over the world, prepared to help others id a plant.
The internet is just AMAZING!

I am afraid I completely missed the last 4 posts.

Next question... Why?
I started by asking for e mail notifications. But my in box was
completely flooded with 100's of posts . So I opted out.
Now, I seem to be missing replies to my own threads.

How can this be sorted? Help reqested yet again.
I never have any problems on any other forum... just this one!

[efloraofindia:90653] Re: Unknown shrub.

2011-10-30 Thread Plantaholic Sheila
Sorry Giby.
I really appreciate all your help and do not wish to appear
ungrateful.

However, Lasianthus parvifolius is not at all like it.

My mystery shrub has 5 petals not 4.

I found this pic showing the leaves.

http://www.biotik.org/india/species/l/lasiparv/lasiparv_05_en.html

It just doesn't come close to my amateur eye.

It was a very large shrub. My pic does not show the bulk of the shrub,
just a few bottom branches. See my 3rd pic for the base of the mother
plant.

I thought at the time it might be a shrubby honeysuckle. But the
stigma is not right.

Of all the unidentified plants from this trip this is THE one I would
really love to id.
I thought my close up pics showing the detail pretty well would make
it so easy! Not so!

Any further thoughts anyone?

Regards
Sheila.

Thank you hari for your suggestion of Nephrolepis. However, I cannot
see any that look like it.

Thank you Satish for your suggestiomn of Alsophila. Again I can see
nothing like it.

If you look at my pics you can see my head in pic 4.
The ferns tower above me. But the growth is not with a trunk as tree
ferns grow.

Each frond is forked and keeps re forking as it get larger.

I have tried searching www and the nearest I get is the forked ferns
in Gleicheniaceae.
Nearest is Diplopterygium .. see image below.

http://www.plantsystematics.org/imgs/robbin/r/Gleicheniaceae_Diplopterygium_bancroftii_5390.html

However, I do know ferns are very very difficult to id especially
from a few amateur images.
I do not know whether the above ferns even grow in India.

I was hoping that there might be an expert with local knowledge of the
ferns that grow near Lava that would immediately say what it is.

Thank you for looking and your help.

2012-05-14 Thread Plantaholic Sheila
Thank you so much JM.Garg for bumping my post to the top.
Love the new site!

I have received an e mail in reply...

It is Leycesteria formosa of Caprifoliaceae. It is very common in Neora
Velley National Park, may be around Aluabari and upto Jopokhri at the top.
PROF. A. P. DAS
 Thanks, Prof. Das.

For which I would like to thank Prof Das.
However... Leycestria formosana is a very common shrub in UK. I have never
seen it without the bigpuple coloured bracts that come with the flowers and
remain on the plant with the berries.

Does it do something very different in Nepal?

Help experts.
Warmest wishes from UK to you all.
Sheila.

2012-05-21 Thread Plantaholic Sheila
I would like to thank you all for the research and help you have given me
for trying to id this plant.

Thank you J.M. Garg for bumping this to the top for further help from
everyone.

Special thanks to Prashant for the suggestion of Litsea.

Also Jui for the suggestion of Casearia and Xylosma.

Also Surajit for the suggestion of Litsea monopetala... and Xylosma. and
for taking so much trouble in giving me links for these

I have tried to look on www for further help.
But am unable to find any image for Litsea monopetala, that match the
leathery leaf, with the curved veins (sort of in loops), small petalled
flowers on very short stalks directly from the branches, which bear both
buds and flowers together. etc. etc

http://www.hkwildlife.net/viewthread.php?tid=40623

I believe that Xylosma can be ruled out as it has fruits that are small
purple/black berries.

So inspite of all your generous help I still feel that this is unresolved.

 Garg Sir,

The probability of a Myrtaceae member also occurred to me and i searched a
 lot on *Syzigium* too!

Specially because the 4th image (041 13-04-2011 17-46-30.jpg) gives hint
of hermaphrodite flowers and the 5th image (041 13-04-2011 17-46-54.jpg)
clearly shows sub-marginal venation. On the other hand *Litsea* is
 a dioecious plant.

Fruits (041 13-04-2011 17-45-42.jpg) are more like *Michelia champaca*, a
Magnoliaceae member. But, i think, this plant in question cannot be a
 Magnoliaceae!

Neither would i go for Myrtaceae, fruits are different and i think almost
all flowers and fruits bear pedicel.

So, only chance left to me is to vote for *Xylosoma* sp.

 Thank you Regards,

Hi everyone,
On our magical 3 week trip to Sikkim and West Bengal on March 2011, this
shrub has stayed in my memory.
It was along side the road to Tiger Hill near Ghoom, ( not far from
Darjeeling.)which many hundreds of tourists visit every day to watch the
sun rise over the Himalayas.
There were lots of these shrubs... so very common ... or so I thought.
I took more pic of this one shrub than any other, to try and capture as
much detail as possible.

I thought it would be so very easy to id.

I have even sent a letter ( snail mail!) to the Lloyd Botanic garden in
Darjeeling with photos, but sadly did not receive a reply.
( I would normally put a stamped addressed envelope with my letter for a
reply. But this does not work in foreign countries.)

Somone on this learned forum must live near here/ visit here.
I have often wondered what the berries are like, what colour they will be.

Your help is requested.
Thank you for looking.
Warmest wishes.
Sheila.

Usha di, this is the first time in these forums I have not been comfortable.
Until now everyone here has been just wonderfully and so very helpful.

I am sorry my ignorance as a foreigner to Sikkim is so amusing to you.
But please do not mock me for being ignorant.

If I remember correctly this tree was growing in the huge grounds of Teen
Taley eco Tourist Resort.

*Quote..Teen Taley Garden resort*
Daintily perched on a picturesque slope of Rumtek is the *Teen Taley Eco
Garden resort*, a pioneer in the new breed of eco-conscious resorts. Set
amidst landscaped gardens and lush forests, this hill resort in Sikkim is a
mere 30 minute drive away from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. This nature
resort in Sikkim blends traditional architecture and interior design with
modern amenities. A strict vigil is kept on preserving and conserving the
environment.

The eco –friendly resort around Gangtok is spread out over six and a half
acres of natural beauty.

The cuisine is traditional Sikkimese prepared with produce from the
Resort’s organically grown kitchen garden. The garden has special area of
Medicinal Plants and Herbs. Dairy, poultry and fresh meat products are also
provided from the Resort’s farm. You can also pick vegetables of your
choice and have them prepared for food. ...

In the grounds they had several poly tunnels where they were growing fresh
vegetables for the guests.
On the edge of this cleared, cultivated area were several huge trees and
paths going into other parts of the grounds, that sadly we did not have
time to explore.I assumed they lead into the original, uncleared forest.

However, I do not know which are native trees in the area and which are
planted introductions.

I was just enjoying a holiday... but I was also fascination and
interest by all the wonderful new trees and shrubs, that I have never seen
before.

So my assumption that it was growing wild could be completely erroneous.
Sorry if I was misleading.

Surajit, thank you for your suggestion of Magnolia and for all the trouble

 Some earlier relevant feedback:

“The young leaves (emerging), which are looking like flower buds point
*towards one of the Ficus species*. I am not sure.” from Mahadeswara ji.
