[IRCA] DX Test Results
Here is the list of who heard what - or tried and didn't - or maybe did. Please excuse the delay in sending this. I am having computer troubles to the extreme. The only good news being that the new lap and notebook systems I've just bought are being set up this afternoon. This list is based on reports to four lists I subscribe to, and from people who have independently e-mailed me. Most cool, of course, is the reception in New Zealand of WKVQ, as well as various TA receptions. It's not meant to be a complete list of every one who heard the tests, but an indicator of where the tests were heard, or not heard, or possibly/marginally heard. Enjoy! In Spain, the origin of the Basques was a subject of occasional discussion. The most accepted theories (at least amongst my acquaintances in Madrid and Wikipedia) is that Basque has some linguistic roots in common with languages of the Caucasus and possibly with early European languas that pre-date the Indo-European languages now spoken. There is no clear consensus and no one seems to have conclusive proof, which tells you how old a language Basque is. And maybe not even radio related hobbies, either. I am on lots of forums and lists, both DX or non-DX related and I have been ignored in several instances. It is funny, even though it shouldn't be. Maybe it's because I'm younger than lots of the old guard, don't own tens of thousands of dollars of equipment, etc. In the past, I have tried to help some DX'ers with unID's, ask for advice, and so on while 90% reply there are some of the elite group that just ignore me and my peonic self. Have never confirmed that Top Inter is actually on the air; I asked Connelly since he's local, but was ignored, in keeping with NRC oligarchical tradition. It seems unlikely that it is actually on, given Soleil on the same channel, and I've never seen an actual log of it that confirmed it was Top Inter and not Soleil. Will check my peninsular comrades with respect to Dade City. Note that there are two list entries for the same location. Lubavitscher (thus nicknamed by virtue of being run by Chabad Lubavitsch sect) used to be easily heard down here but not for a few years, far stronger than anything heard there now. Fenique/Summum was publicized but never confirmed on the air at any of their alleged tx sites. When Lakay showed up, we first thought it was this but it was determined otherwise. All details about this one were derived solely from their website. Lakay is off, was audible here daytimes even but didn't last more than a few weeks, last log being 15 April 2008. I DF'd that one to Winter Haven myself. Soleil is confirmed active, 1709.983, tends to be the second strongest station on channel here, but generally buried by Celestial. Will inquire regionally re. KONK also. I thought that was on 1630 (see entry on link below). Celestial is the dominant 1710 station here, 1710.026 typically. Big Q has been known to make it into our area during its sporadic appearances, though I have yet to hear it myself since I'm rarely DXing at 0300 local. Most of these stations are somewhat off-freq but generally stable. Characterization of their freqs down to the Hz would be useful for IDing when signal strength doesn't support aural identification. This site has some Floridian 1710 references: https://sites.google.com/site/floridadxn/florida-low-power-radio-station s Terry isn't good about closure on the station entries however, i.e. recording then they disappear, so they don't necessarily still exist simply because an entry doesn't say they pulled the plug. Note the one entry about the WOCL/WKTK relay there; that's our biggest regional mystery, but it shows up very rarely. Undercover Radio (SW pirate) has used 1710 on occasion, audible here. If you plan to do so, it would be great to have a 1710 list online that is actually up-to-date and relies on something besides others' old web postings as information sources. You'd have my enthusiastic support with my own observations. 73, dc On 04/01/2011 07:02 AM, Saul DX wrote: I haven't seen these posted yet - web links with live audio to some of the 1710 stations we're talking about. [IRCA] Getting to the bottom of 1710
I haven't seen these posted yet - web links with live audio to some of the 1710 stations we're talking about. I'm in downtown Toronto where DXing is near-impossible, so that gives me time to think outside my radiobox. When I'm at my Burnt River DX site I'm so focused on the radio (when I'm not working) that I neglect these things. You can bet I'll be trying to sync what I'm hearing on 1710 with these live links whenever I'm on 1710. They give every impression of being live. Radio Celestiale: www.smjrc.com Radio Soleil Internationale: www.radiosoleilinternational.com Radio Top Inter: Nothing I can find I think these two live audio sites - if they're truly live, and it sounds like it - are a no-brainer for anyone of us DXing 1710. Use these to ID the stations and/or rule them out and have other suspects. I'd like to further have us all tear through Shawn Axelrod's excellent list on amandx and sort out what's on the air full-time, occasionally, or not at all. Re: [IRCA] Unid on 1710 Saturday
Sounds more like French (Creole) or possibly Spanish. I'm not sure...lot of noise and I don't have the facility to reduce the noise here... I haven't heard the Lubavitcher station in at least a year. Either it's off or it's overwhelmed by the Boston (Haiatian-Creole) or Spanish-language (reportedly in NYC?) pirates. I'd love to get to the bottom of the Spanish one(s) I've been hearing on 1710. Re: [IRCA] Unid on 1710 Saturday
There are no Spanish pirates in the Boston area that I know of. I know of at least two French-language, the Haitian Crole dialect, actually. One is Radio Soleil Internationale, the other is Radio Top Inter. Soleil has been heard very recently. Both are supposedly in the Boston area, where I believe there must be enough of a Haitian ex-pat population to support it. There's also at least one or two Spanish-language pirates in the U.S. There's evidence one is in the Bronx, and speculation of another in the Norfolk VA area. The one believed to be in CA is apprently running non-stop Spanish religious music with no talk or IDs. I heard this one a few days ago, taped it right through the TOH, with no success at anything IDable. I've also previously heard a station with Spanish talk and music there, seemingly also religious. This may be the Bronx station - and all this presupposes that the two stations are indeed different. I did have strong Spanish music on 1710 during auroral cx with a BOG aimed south, when signals were good to an area from VA to the Caribbean, and out to TN and Mexico. There is a strong religious pirate in the Bronx of New York City in Spanish on 1710 but your recording is not it. They never sound this good in production and fidelity. The jewish pirate has not been seen in some time. I think they finally gave up after a multi-year run. I could have sworn there was a 1710 on the air from the Caribbean, but I couldn't find anything on-line about it. It may also be one of the several Spanish pirates from the Boston area. [IRCA] The Ice BOG Cometh
There's been some discussion on the WTFDA Forums about a BOG I've been using here at Burnt River ON, where I've placed them atop the ice of frozen Four Mile Lake. I'r Reprinting my posts, leaving the interlocutors unIDed save their location because I have not asked them. I'm moving the discussion to the lists (partly because it originated in an area meant for solving unIDs). MY INITIAL MARCH 20 POST: Looks like I'm headed back to Burnt River for more punishment tomorrow. With the spring thaw upon us a bit early, I was feeling disappointed that I'd likely be removing the BOG wires from the ice for the last time this season, as it will likely be mildly unsafe to venture back onto the lake to put them back. But at the last minute I decided that if the lake is unsafe for walking, there'll likely be no snowmobile traffic to chew up the wires, or get snarled in them. And the ice is covered in small patches of water. I'll likely leave them in until the ice breaks up (usually mid-April, may be earlier this year). At that point, if the wires are still intact I'll pull them out from the shore. (Ice is powerful, won't surprise me if the ice breakup rips the wires to shreds...and I'm curious to see what does unfold). Late last winter was the first time I've ever put BOGs on lake ice, and I can say that the results have been uniformly incredible. Almost ever! y time I've been at the dials, the DX has been phenomenal. I have been getting 3-5 new stations some days, and I'm closing in on 2000, so it's no mean feat to do that. Normally I'm happy to get one new catch every two days of intense time at the dials, maybe one or two in a week when I'm more casual about it. I don't think it's conditions. I think I've hit on something good with the BOGs on Lake Ice, and you can bet I'll be at it when the lake freezes over again next winter (often by Christmas). LOUISIANA, MARCH 21: Saul, that is very interesting about the antennas in ice. That sure worked well for you. I know you have an AOR receiver. How many receivers are you using? SAUL MARCH 21: Mainly the AOR. One is enough to keep me more than busy. I have two dormant Sangean ATS 909 portables that are now relegated mainly to FM. Occasionally I will attach one to a radio shacvk loop, but have just purchased a larger loop that should arrive soon (for the AOR). I have a Tecsun 380 modified with a loopstick, but again I just use it for nulls. Much as these ULRs are fun and useful in certain ways, I'm not finding anywhere close to the same results as I am with the AOR. When I have a thousand to spend on another radio I see getting a Perseus... I might add to my point about the Ice BOGs. They are also aimed west and southwest, whereas I probably maxed out the east, northeast and southeast BOGs. They're all unterminated, but my radio to somke degree acts as a terminator. But I'm getting much less QRM from the back end with the ice BOGs than I was getting from the west with the ones running easterly through forest. I have no solid proof - may be the lack of tree cover, or the proximity to water, or the very straight line on ice (no trees to force small bends and curves, and I'm able to grave the wire at the far end and with soime muscle make it taut and straight (I even moved it a few degrees once that way without having any impediments). I guess you don't have much lake ice down your way... SAUL MARCH 21: Well, BOG on Ice season seems about done fer here. Got up a few hours ago. My SSW wire is out on the lake but got pulled a bit by a snowmobile. Which surprises me given that the lake has had water on top of the ice since I left here, and it's been mostly raining. But a neighbour told me they indeed were out after I left... This wire seems somewhat okay - a bit loopy in the middle but I'll likely have sufficient directionality. The west wire is a different story. A snowmobile took one end for a real ride, and I retriEved the spool end about 30 feet from shore. And I'm lucky to have it. The ice is solid enough in shore, buI could see a large hole maybe 20 feet further, in the direction I would have had to go to set it back out. The spring thaw has arrived. I like DXing, but not enough to risk my life. This wire goes west then arcs south. We'll see what it does. I have set a short wire due south through the woods Cx seem to be heading back to auroral, a bit at least. I'll leave the BOG Ice wires where they are, maybe tinker a bit close to shore where I am safe (just 2-3 feet of water) when it's daylight. And when I leave on Saturday morning I'll pull the wires out for the season. No matter, have a Quantum Loop coming soon in the mail. The Iceman will Cometh back next winter. SAUL, MARCH 22: After dawn today, I looked out, and it was clear the hole in the ice was an exception to the rule, seemed too even and completely surrounded by thick white ice. To get a closer look, put some skis on to distribute my weight

[IRCA] South Asian on 1090 - can anyone in the Detroit area give this a listen?
This was in fairly well at times, but of course when TOH came around it faded down. So no IDs. That said, I am prepared to rule out KULF TX, because the signal was just too consistent for 250 (daytime) watts. I tried to get into its web stream but had trouble, even though this worked for me a few days ago in Toronto. I'm guessing this is WCAR Livonia MI, as others have suggested this as a likely candidate. But this doesn't seem to fit their (supposed) Catholic format. Anyhow, this South Asian music, a bit Bollywood'ish, stands out well on 1090 for anyone wanting to chase it. I'm getting in mainly between 2000-2100. WTAM has removed its IBOC, either temporarily or permanently, making 1090 much more DXable. Recorded at 0016 with more talk and music. Recorded again at 0017 with just music sounding Cuban. All thus far on south wire thus far. Recorded on the southwest wire at 0052 with talk and also a mention of Cuba. I am told the station folks are hearing on 1040 these days is Radio Mayabeque. I've yet to determine if this replaces the other two I'm aware of. You can follow the sordid tale at www.wtfda.info/showthread.php?t=5613 - and I'd really appreciate anyone who might be able to shed further light and maybe even listening to the clips which are posted at this link. 1040 WHBO FL Pinellas Park - 0003 - On tape underneath Cuban music, a distinct on ESPN and ESPNRadio.com is heard at 3:37 of clip that started at . Presumed, as NYC clears are fairly weak, and NJ is never heard at night. New ***IF*** this is Florida. Has anyone been hearing the NJ 1040 inland at night? 750 CMHV CUBA Trinidad - 0015 - Radio Progreso //630, 690 and later 730. Songs include a woman with a recognizably trilly voice. New. 650 HJKH COLOMBIA Santa Fé de Bogotá (RCN Antena 2) - 0028 - Presumed with Spanish talk about Latin American soccer teams, moving on to Colombian teams, including Barranquilla at 5:23 in the recording. Programming would fit with station website (antena2.com.co), which is full of soccer news. This is a relog, but a nice signal. Clip at www.wtfda.info/showthread.php?t=5615. 990 CMAP CUBA San Luís - 0059 - Radio Guamá with Cuban anthem. Also recorded at 0049 with brief snippet of Spanish talk followed by classical music on southwest wire. Again with more talk at 0056. And at 0255 with woman speaking Spanish after rhythmic music, mentioning Valencia in what may be a phone interview. Recorded again on south wire at 0300. And at 0318 with possible La Cadena in ID and Cuban-sounding music. New. I don't know of any other Cubans on 990Clips online at www.wtfda.info/showthread.php?t=5614 for anyone who wishes to listen. There were several Spanish stations in, so there's potential for more to be mined from this. Though I've reached the end of what I think I can do with what I recorded. 730 CMBB CUBA Nueva Gerona - 0115 - Weak but clearly //630, 690, 750 with singing and instrumental music. Programma Nocturna, Radio Progreso ID. New. 560 WQAM FL Miami - 0125 - Ads with 305 area code, miami.com in a web address, ad for the Country Club of Miami, and an ID that includes South Florida's sports leader...Fort Lauderdale. Weak but solid signal, mixing with Rebelde. New. 1170 unID - 0155 - Recorded with Spanish phone caller does not strike me as the same station as the NC daytimer that has been widely heard at night (and which I hear may no longer be running at night). A Spanish ballad follows, but seems like brief bumper music. Clip at

Re: [IRCA] DXpedition to Masset and report/audio
I've been playing aro8und with both my loopstick-modified Tecsun 380 and my AOR 7000+ (the latter with various BOGs). I like the ULR for nulling when there's a station I'm chasing and I can't get it in the clear with the BOGs, and need some nulling. (I'm also doing this with a Sangean ATS909 portable and a Radio Shack loop). I like the Tecsun for portability. It goes with me almost everywhere. I would definitely use it pretty heavily in a DX hot-spot like Newfoundland, for the circumstances noted above. A couple semi-locals there have frustrated me, and I am anticipating the Tecsun will help immensely on a couple of channels in particular. But if I am chasing weak to marginal stations, the Tecsun just doesn't cut it. I couldn't imagine chasing TAs from Ontario using this. Though if cx are good enough I think it would becool to log one that way. Thus far I've managed hets from TP stations a couple of times, here, on the BOGs, during exceptionally good cx. I don't see getting these with the Tecsun. ULRs and larger receivers are like tools in the DXer's toolbox. Sometimes a screwdriver is right for the job. But if you want to pound a nail you need a hammer. - Original Message - From: Richard Allen richa...@perryisp.net To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Tuesday, March 15, 2011 12:42 AM Subject: Re: [IRCA] DXpedition to Masset and report/audio Nick: I've had no luck hearing anything above 1134 kHz. Thanks, Paul. Figured it'd be them. But you never know. Easy relog here. My 1400 Fan is WDUZ Green Bay WI for a new catch. I think my 1460 might be Goshen IN, as I think I hear a rapid Goshen and South Bend in the mix. That'll be new, if it's them. I went to sleep after 4 am and had to wake up at 0700 to take out the trash, so settled in for what by that point amounted to torture. But pleasant, happy torture. - Original Message - From: Paul B. At Burnt River ON have logged new catches in Progreso 730 and 750 close to midnight. Had a Sporting News Radio on 560 that gave an ID sounding very much like WQAM (Miami). I'll listen to the 560 recording again the cold light of day to ascertain if WQAM is indeed caught. I'm getting music that sounds like it's being played on a tape recorder when the tape is not running smoothly on 750 and 1040 (seems like different programming). I'm getting wobblers on 930 and some other channels. Think I'll be up late tonight. I now know the country music isn't them. But I have heard Christmas music and morse code and voice IDs. Called Craig at the station, and had an exceedingly nice chat. They're running their 10 KW day power, btw, as noted in the announcements and confirmed with Craig. They activated their CP for this this past September. Not as good on the loopstick-modified Tecsun 380 ULR, but solid enough. Much stronger on the AOR, and much stronger than the earlier test. I am having interference problems on 990 WNTP here in Philadelphia, largely from CKGM in Montreal. Their signal is so strong here at night that it penetrates deeply within my licensed interference-free contour. It seems unlikely that the signal I am seeing can be produced by their licensed night pattern, which is (at least on paper) very restrictive into the US. On paper they should boom their 50kw almost entirely to the north while supposedly having deep nulls at night toward Philly, Providence, Rochester, and Knoxville (as well as toward Winnipeg, MB and Corner Brook, NF). You can see their licensed night pattern on the FCC Database: http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/403523-27563.pdf You can compare that with their much less restrictive licensed day pattern: http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/403523-27562.pdf Now, here is what I would like to know: what signals seem to be predominant in your area on 990 at night? Does CKGM come in more strongly that what you would think their pattern should produce? For those of you in areas with stations on 990, does CKGM present a problem to your local station at night? Finally, if you are in an area south of Montreal, is it possible for you to listen and detect if you can hear them change pattern from day to night? The change toward the south should be significant. According to the information provided by the FCC, they should be changing pattern at about 6:00PM EST in March. Any information you can give me concerning any of the above questions would be greatly appreciated. [IRCA] DX test this weekend
Just a reminder -- thanks to Bill Dvorak and George Santulli for keeping me on my toes -- the test for 1440 WFNY Gloversville is scheduled for Saturday night - Sunday morning, from 0100-0200 EST. I am up to my eyeballs this weekend in a conference I'm covering for four periodicals, vut look forward to seeing what can be done downtown, where I have a local on 1430 a mile away and cramming the dial around it. That will be my challenge for WFNY this time, given that I've heard it before both in the Toronto suburbs and at my Burnt River site. And I'm not sure I'll be able to hear it so close to the 1430 transmitter site...it will be interesting to try... As for the time change - that is next weekend. I will post a reminder for the tests slated for that weekend and the one after, closer to the dates. Those two are from Georgia. I expect to be at my Burnt River site for those if I can get away (and I should be able to). Here's hoping cx are good and WFNY gets out far and wide. [IRCA] Good auroral SRS ON
Woke up to a solo, loud station on 580, and was I ever surprised when it IDed as WGAC Augusta (GA). WHP PA suddenly interrupted a minute later (must have been on open carrier), but WGAC soon dominated the pair. A Mexican on 620 playing some kind of soft music, kind of hybrid bertween classical and adult standards. Frequent mentions Educacion and musica, and a pretty clear ID that I have recorded, sounding like Radio Ceh Peh Ceh...but nothing close listed in my 2009 WRTH and there was too much action at the dials to check the online Mexican logs. I can do that during down time in Toronto. A lovely ID AM 690 WIST which is nice to hear as I have heard it but only as 'presumed' with FSR aimed in that direction (I was able to rule out Minneeap[olis). Lots of unIDs from this morning and the last few days. I have two hectic weeks of work coming up, but may find some time to start going through the recordings. Cx have been great the last few times I've been up here, but I'm also thinking these BOGs on the ice are working particularly well. The southwest wire is non-directional and only about 300 feet (and probably not completely straight as there are some obstacles getting down to the lake in that direction). Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] Huge Latin cx tonight ON
Thanks, Russ. I sorted out WNVA upon my return to Toronto. That's new here. Band was so hot I didn't spend time looking stuff up outside of the NRC log. The 620 is most likely a Mexican, and I know I have an ID that if I can't figure it out someone will be able to. I also presumed WSJS, which I have heard before - possibly also doing Wolfpack. Lotys more to work out, like Lady rebels basketball (likely high-school) on 1070; Mexicans on various channels, Progreso on 660 (WRTH has only rebelde listed), and more. I'm just back in Toronto and catching my breath before a rather intense period of work coming up. Half the fun from these DXpeditions is solving stuff afterwards. I'm surprised I'm not reading more from others...cx really were very good, and some solid signals last night this morning. - Original Message - From: Russ Edmunds wb2...@yahoo.com To: a...@nrcdxas.org; a...@wtfda.info; Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Wednesday, March 02, 2011 6:40 PM Subject: Re: [Amdx] Huge Latin cx tonight ON WSJS-600 is on NC State's network. Thank you to thhose who (a) reported WZRX is still having tonal automation issues (making it easy to log), and letting me know what you heard on 1510. On 1510, when In went back to the west wire the sports was gone. Perhaps CO or WA, though cx were not much more than average last night... On a separate note, this morning's post-SRS greyline actoivity was a sleeper. Given that I nabbed seven new catches yesterday (graveyarders from MN (3), WI (3) and MI (1 in Upper Peninsula), I can hardly complain. But interesting how cx can turn on a dime. [IRCA] More great southern DX ON
1350 with classic country and a jingle that sounded like WNVA - has Norton VA switched from southern gospel to classic country? 1070 with Lady Eagles basketball. Possibly playing U of KY but not yet sure. One key player has last name Jordan, which some searching takes me to the Union City TN area. But there's no 1070 close-by. 660 has Cuba's Progreso, in //690, 880, 890. The 2009 WRTH lists only a Rebelde in Cuba, so I'll have to work on this one. 990 in Knowxville with FSR and local ads. Haiti is absolutely huge on 840, with religious talk in Creole. No distortion at all in its signal, unlike something I heard awhile back on 840. Too busy listening to sort these all out, yet. [IRCA] DX update from the bat-cave at Burnt River ON
Heard KKOW 860 KS with tornado warnings and other bad weather ancts last night per tip on a couple lists. Common here when cx are good or when station is on day power, which it obviously was given the situation. This morning was superb in the two hours after sunrise. 1450 Fond du Lac WI KFIZ is becoming a proverbial pest, and was in for much of two hours post-sunrise. 1490 the same with Duluth MN, in solidly the various times I checked 1490 from before 0800 to 1000 EST. Your home for the wild...the Fan 1490... May also have had Alexandria MN there, have some tape listening to do, and web research. WOBT Rhinelander WI on 1240 with ESPN. Winona MN KWNO 1230. The Talk of Winona. 1450 KFIZ gave way briefly to Marshfield, and and ID which I recall was KVLB, though I need to recheck the NRC log as I forgot to write down the calls. It's taped, anyhow. That's four new, plus a bunch of ads I have yet to check on Google, and also some more possible taped IDs - or what sounded like IDs, for some maybe additional stations. Graveyarders are fun to work when cx are good. I've had pretty well all the regional stations for WI and the easy-moderate catches from MN. Actually, when I am working a channel like 1420, I want an eastern time zone time-check, not a central one, as I've had MN IA and WI there (KTOE Mankato is a pest there), but still need the two closer-in ones from MI. Would have had even more, but when I went to put out the garbage, I left the door open for a minute and a bat flew in. That surprised me, that it'd be flying around outside with sub-freezing temps and during daylight. Anyhow I stunned it with a broom and put it back where it belongs. [IRCA] Sunset and evening DX at Burnt River ON
Just got up to Burnt River ON this afternoon. Only sunset catch of note was 1600 KGYM Cedar Rapids IA with very strong signal. ESPN 1600. Relog. Despite its strength, nothing else of note at SSS. This evening I have black gospel on 1570 quite strong. I'll presume Harvey IL as this comes in often. Also, my old Heaven 1550 unID is actually Avenue 1550, Lake Geneva WI. I heard what I was sure was Heaven 1550 this evening, but got some local ads, and a second time the slogan aired I caught clearly what it really was. I get this fairly often, actually, and am somewhat surprised I mistook it for something else on a couple occasions over the past few months. It's mixing with CBE Windsor, which as we all know now is still on 1550 even while testing on 97.5. When Robert Ross in London ON, a short distance from Windsor, reported Springfield MO and Lake Geneva WI both dominant and mixing on 1550, that led me to wonder if CBE had finally gone dark. Obviously, it hasn't, as some of you noted, and is evident tonight. WSCR 670 Chicago - it's IBOC still seems to be off. I'll be keeping an ear on 670 to see if the station goes off again. It was reported off shortly after its IBOC went missing about a week ago. I have a wire aimed west, waiting. Have also kept an ear on 1590 on my sw wire, for reported tones from the Mississippi station whose automation seems to have gone awry. I would certainly appreciate any reports should anyone hear tone there - with thanks. Anyhow, it's all WAKR Akron OH thus far. One new catch from Toronto Saturday afetrnoon. Just befoire 5 pm, 1440 WFNY in Gloversville NY IDed, and gave power as 5,000 watts. I have it logged from BR but needed it in Toronto. Was at the airport waiting for my Nephew to arrive from Calgary. This means that if I log the coming DX test from WFNY in early March it will not be a new logging. While it's not that far away, I've never heard Henderson, Kentucky's WSON before. So it's technically a NEW log, despite the short distance. 620Khz UNID 5:43pm Central Poor but steady signal, heard preaching and teaching type program. Didn't sound loud and excitable like a church pastor.. but more along the lines of Turning Point, Thru The Bible and such.. but was neither of those programs. I don't think this was WRJZ Knoxville because during the time I heard whatever station this was, WRJZ's program schedule doesn't match. 1070Khz 5:29pm POOR signal, with a promo for a show.. all of a sudden it disappeared as if the station powered down or switched pattern. I suspect this was WAPI Birmingham, AL. As soon as WAPI disappeared, heard two talk show hosts appeared out of the mud with a POOR but steady signal and heard one announcer say to a caller, You're on WDIA 1080Khz 5:49pm Central VERY GOOD, steady signal with sports report, a single commercial, then an announcer mentioning Traffic and weather together on News Radio 1080 KRLD 1170Khz 5:38 pm Central OK signal, State News followed by stock news with mentions of 1170 KFAQ 1200Khz 5:49pm Central Marginal but steady signal, Coming back from a break, I believe the announcer introduced the show as The Joe Patton Show, talking about an u[coming guest and a book he wrote. WOAI San Antonio,TX. 1270Khz UNID Time: 5:50pm Poor to marginal signal, male talk show host talking to female caller, in spanish. Tried to pick out any words i could understand, but didn't understand anything that was being said. 1350Khz UNID Time: 5:51pm Central Oldies formatted music form The Jones Radio Network with announcer Brad Pierce. Coming out of a song, Brad talked, then into a commercial break. The Stereo light popped on and off a few times, but it may not be actual stereo just a false positive. I don't know what network WGAD Gadsden, AL carries so I don't know if this is them. 1380Khz UNID Time 5:38pm Central Marginal and fading signal, song ended into a fast paced and exited promo by male announcer in spanish. All i understand from it was La Musica and then it went back into a song. 1360Khz Heard a Good but fading signal, Walker County's Home of the legends, 1360 WIXI. When they upgraded from 1KW to 12KW Non Directional last year they REALLY blast in right before sunset!! 1440Khz Time: 5:56pm Central Very poor but steady signal with Let's Hear It For The Boys...I am pretty sure this is WZYX Cowan, TN 1470Khz Time: Approximately 5:30pm Central Station ID, anchor mentioning time, temperature and then intro'd a traffic report and into news. Several mentions of Peoria, this was obviously 1470 WMBD Peoria, IL 1470Khz NEW LOGGING!!! Time: 5:17pm Central Heard mentions of (Unintelligble) Radio 1470 1290 by an announcer coming out of a song who went on to talk about an event, mentioned Mardi Gras, getting tickets to an event coming up on some Saturday. A mention of 2500 points in your account and Come by our studios in lake Charles. This would be KLCL Lake Charles, LA simulcast with KJEF 1290 Jennings, LA. NEW LOG!! 1550Khz Time: 6:13pm Central Poor signal, Heard gospel music on here.. suspect this to be the WPFC baton Rouge, LA that Rick from Omaha reported hearing the other night. That would provide two prominent possibilities - WVLN Olney IL and WMSP AL. Thanks, Barry (and Neil Kazaross for pointing to WVLN). Thu Feb 10 was one of the better mornings for DX at Burnt River ON. I've indicated links down below where applicable. 930 WDLX NC Washington - 0340 - Ha! Pirate radio 1250 and 930. Ha! Your talk station. 1030 unID - 0349 - Southern gospel music with lengthy jingle or brief bit of music in between songs. Tearing up WOWO. Seems too strong for its allotted 70 watts nighttime power. 790 unID - 0404 - Spanish Christian programming. This sounds like Catholic prayers. Was going on for at least an hour when I checked. Atop Cuba's Reloj. Has anyone heard and/or IDed anything like this on 790? [IRCA] 940 WCSW Jason Lewis Show oddity
On Friday 11 Feb at 1851 EST, on 940, after national ads, a female announcer said: Thank you for listening to the Jason Lewis Show and indicated the program will resume in a set number of minutes. This continued for over an hour, with Lewis actually appearing at various intervals and doing his show. The only station listed at Lewis' web site www.jasonlewisshow.com is WCSW Shell Lake WI, and my longwire is aimed west. Perhaps WCSW was running unattended. Anyhow, if you need the station, listen to the clips and then try 940 when the show is on. Maybe this is an ongoing problem at the station. The music stands out, even if it is a bit on the soft side. [IRCA] More greyline DX, and antenna question
More fun tbis morning pos-sunrise. lapeer MI 1230, then 810 Tomahawk WI, both new. The latter has been on my most-wanted list, been chasing that awhile. Both WI stations on 910 are relogs. When MI was huge I was looking for WGTO Cassoplis MI which is on my hit-list. Nabbed the 1620 HAR from north of Chicago again, albeit very briefly. I am wondering if the good cx to the west this trip reflect the temporary BOG I laid out on the ice facing west. It seems every time I do this, I do well to the west. Last year it was a beaut session to BC/AB. This year every time I have laid a wire on the ice I've done well in that relative direction. Ironically, I have done less than stellar in the opposite direction (east) - and given that the antenna is unterminated I am a bit puzzled (though happy to evade the east, which is generally what my unterminated wires through the woods have yielded for me, so the change is welcome). Is it possible my radio (at the east end of the wire) acts as a partial terminator? Included in this fine assembly were Guy Atkins (with his 18 Stormwise loopstick PL-380), Chuck Hutton (the only DXer ever to have logged India on an Ultralight radio in North America, from Newfoundland in 2008), Kevin Schanilec (fanatic tinkerer, newly hooked ULR- NDB chaser and moderator of Ultralightdx), Phil Bytheway (ex-EIC of the IRCA, now enjoying his free time with Ultralight radios) and me (generally keeping the ferrite and PVC suppliers from feeling any recession). Jim Kenney was also in attendance (expressing his skepticism that ULR's would ever cross the big pond in NDB chasing), and also Walt Salmaniw (who has used his E100 Slider model to post very detailed DXing reports from the South Pacific, and Hawaii). The weather was awful and the Seattle traffic was jammed as usual, but there was a lot of creative energy in the Ultralight group contingent. Thanks especially to Bruce and his wife for welcoming this diverse group, and to Kevin and Guy for bringing their monster antennas to the gathering (convincing me that I'm not the only eccentric tinkerer). Fortunately, because of the rain and wind, I decided not to bring one of the huge new portable PVC Loops (which might have upset my plan to appear relatively sane). 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] off-topic snowfall (was Robert Ross DX)
Forcasters almost uniformly called for 25-30 cm snow here. The Weather Network now reports Widespread total snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 centimetres are likely by the time the storm ends by this evening. We'll only know for sure after this is over. But if the forecasts overstated the amount of snow for at least much of southern Ontario, I think the effect on driving and such has probably (judging from looking outside and listening to the news) been the same as it would be with the additional 10 cm... I'm only sorry I had to leave Burnt River site last night. With reports of WBBM being on what would seem like reduced power, that would / might have been fun... Hope everyone is safe - it seems we've gotten off easy here in Ontario; I know folks elsewhere have had a rough time. From: Robert S.Ross VA3SW va...@rogers.com WellNothing of note was heard overnight in spite of the Big Storm!! I was hoping to hear some Daytimers on with Emergency Broadcasts...but none to be found. The first wave of the storm moved through here overnight and dumped a lot of snow...but I'm not sure where most of it went!!!? The Driving Wind has blown much of it away!! My Neighbour at the end of the Street must have a hell of big pile of Snow piled up in his yard!! Re: [IRCA] Run Don't Walk
I'd say... From Burnt River ON sunset skip started when I had a late luch at 2:30, with Maine and the rest of New England blasting in. 1280 Gardiner ME and 1230 CT (the Spanish station there) both new, some nice relogs. Veered to the sw and I netted Oakland NJ, on my target list for awhile, and some relogs from NJ area I don't hear often. WOKV 690 FL popped in, and then it was strong to the nw, with MN WI MI and MB. Nothing new up that way but one of best sigs ever to 730 Dauphin MB, and KTOE 1420 Mankato MN. 1100 Dilworth mixing evenly early on with WTAM 1100. Evening seems slow but now that I've read the e-mail from the NS DXer (below) I'll check eastwards and see if I can nab Nova Scotia and the Maritimes. I did a TA scan and neted good sigs out of Algeriaon 531, 549, and some other stuff, mkostly good hets. Too bad I have to leave tomorrow (I was going to go home on Wednesday morning but want to beat the coming snowstorm). I relaid a wire on the ice almost due west. It's about 400 feet and it rocks. Non-directional, just sitting on the ice. I did that on foot but after seeing an open spot on otherwise thick enough ice I went out on skis today to spread my weight a bit a, when I checked it (for damage from snowmobiles). It's generally only a problem on weekends. If any of you do use ice on lakes this way, play it safe. Go on skis, test the ice for thickness every so often, and take something that you can use to grab into the ice to pull yourself out; and if you do fall in flutter-kick like a seal to help get out. Is or was WVZN silent recently? DX from where I am was unusually strong to NYC-NJ around sunset tonight. Perhaps strongest noted in recent years. Might be worth a call to WLIM and WDAB... [IRCA] 810 Spanish unID
Heard Spanish one November evening on 810, with a wire beverage-on-ground pointed southwest. I think I've seen Bogota reported more than others up this way, but not sure in this case. Audio clips are as follows: Clip A) There's Spanish. Audio's poor for the most part, but I'm particularly interested in what sounds like an anthem (if it isn't just dramatic instrumental music) about half-way through, underneath the Time-warner ad WGY Schenectady NY is running. Clip B) Not uploaded here...too long, at 16 minutes. Nothing hugely compelling there anyhow. Clip C) Decidedly short with Spanish talk atop at first a bubbler (Cuba)? And then Michael Savage (WGY). Clip D) Same Spanish mentions Mexico a couple times but it seems like political talk. The bubbler pops up mid-way. I would expect if this is Cuba that the bubbling would be more consistent, thus I am thinking I should rule out Cuba. There's an ad or announcement with a woman's voice towards the end. Clip E) More talk. Clip F) Some music, then what could be an ID near the start. Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated, with thanks. [IRCA] Spanish unIDs 940 IDed + Solid Gospel
Jon in St. Catharines ON listened and heard La Explosiva IDs in all three clips, making this not a Mexican but WCND in Shelbyville KY. 250 watts daytime, 10 night. This has not been a regular, so either my n-s antenna is well positioned for the station's 10 watts, or they had an errant night-switch issue. On Clip 'b' I hear another station that's been a bit of a nemesis for me this season. Solid Gospel Radio (also IDs as Solid Gospel Music). This coule be WADV Lebanon PA, WNRG Grundy VA, or WECO Wartburg TN. It's been a struggle to get local content. I've heard WADV and WNRG from Burnt River before, but only have WECO in Toronto, so have been after that one. I suspect WNRG in most of these cases, as it's been at night, and WNRG seems to get out the best per others' reports; and a year ago I heard it a slew of times. Nothing IDable here in this clip, but worth reminding all that a Solid Gospel is waiting there on 940; some may need whatever it turns out to be. Again, my thanks to Jon.
