Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
I'm sorry but I cannot afford to have 2 laptops. I'm glad you have the finances to own multiple laptops affording you the ability of upgrading to Windows 10, but for someone like myself it just isn't feasible. I'm using Windows 7 Home (64 Bit) with latest build of JAWS 17 and a TripleTalk USB hardware synth, and I'm experiencing zero issues. My All-in-1 Epson printer/scanner/copier works. My WD 2 TB USB hard drive work. My duel layer DVD burner works... in other words nothing is broke, so I'm not in a rush to change anything. I'm not a computer/software programmer so I have no idea what a "Faster OS" mean. All I know is when I open an application or visit a page on the web,, my PC does the job and does it well. So please don't look at people hesitant about upgrading to Windows 10 as "Cavemen living in the stone age" for in this instance there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Continued fortune with your experience with Windows 10. When I feel the time is right and feel comfortable enough to take my flawlessly working Windows 7 PC down the road of uncertainty, I'll upgrade. That won't be anytime soon though. LOL! No one should be criticized for choosing to upgrade or not to upgrade. I am annoyed that Microsoft has taken this approach to force it on us, but that is not my reason for not upgrading. My primary reason is that my employer will not be upgrading to Windows10 anytime soon. As I grow older and wiser, I've decided that it is not worth my time and effort to be running different computer setups at work and home. There was a time in my life when I was simultaneously proficient in using Apple IIe, Apple GS, Apple Mac, and Windows 3.5, as well as able to write computer code in 4 different programming languages. I now leave the multi-platform use to others of you on this list. I monitor the information shared on this list and tuck it away (or search the archives) when I do need the knowledge. In addition, I'm pretty sure that when I do make the decision to upgrade at home, I will be faced with looking for a new printer and scanner. As best as I can tell neither will be supported in Windows10, but since I've been using them since WindowsXP I am well due for replacements of these devices. So my holiday which for this list is to continue to see useful information being shared on this list and no more criticism of people's personal decisions. If you visit the manufacturer's web site to search for drivers for your peripheral devices, the site will usually detect which OS you currently have installed and search for drivers for that particular OS. So if, for instance, you visit the Samsung web site to search for Windows 10 drivers for your Samsung laser printer before you upgrade to Windows 10, the site will detect your current OS, which will probably be either Windows 7 or 8. Of course, you could search for third-party Windows 10 drivers for your printer before you upgrade to Windows 10, but this is generally not recommended, as the reliability of such drivers is often suspect. And before you think that you can just rush out and buy a new printer if you are unable to find Windows 10 drivers for your old one, keep in mind that many, if not most, new printers, no longer come with tactile, rocker power switches, and often require sighted assistance to set up and operate because they have LCD display screens whose menu options are often totally inaccessible. We get enough stuff pushed on us from technology manufacturers. Happy Holidays to All!! [JAWS-Users] can someone post how to repair jaws please?
Awhile back someone posted 3 ways to repair Jaws. The most helpful way for me was the third way which was similar to the way I repaired it in older versions where you go to a place that asked if you wanted to modify or repair. Can someone repost the directions? I was going to open the EXE file and start the install and try to repair it from there, but as this option isn't an option anymore I thought I would inquire about a possible similar way to do this. joanne For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
Your advice is right-on. So you would first have to upgrade to Windows 10 to determine whether Windows 10 drivers were actually available for your printer. The same is true for scanners and all-in-one units. So again, proceed with caution. There is no hurry to upgrade to Windows 10, since Windows 7 will be supported until early 2020. Even Eric Damery has recommended that JAWS users wait awhile before upgrading. Gerald -Original Message- From: K. You will encounter driver issues with printers, scanners, DVD players, USB drives and the list goes on. If you don't mind loosing the ability to use hardware devices you now rely on, then go ahead and upgrade to Windows 10. A smart person would first do research to make sure their PC and all peripheral devices connected is 100% compatible with an OS before attempting to use it. If you are one who likes living on the "Microsoft" edge, then I guess taking such precautions means nothing. I agree. 2 of the Win 10 computers in the house we had to go and find the drivers for the printer. I have upgraded 1 of my computers and the other 1 I am not for various reasons, it's my choose to do so or not. This thread is going on forever. It's simple Microsoft wants everyone on 10 and is going to push it on you unless you change your settings and get rid of it. Some use it and it is fine and some don't want to use it. I hope we can end this argument about it soon. We all know what's going to or could happen if we don't change update settings. Microsoft shouldn't be pushing it but they are and we can't do anything about that. There are many reasons that one may not want to upgrade and so let them make their own decision. [JAWS-Users] Jaws start up options
Win 10 and Jaws 17. I am having difficulty with the Jaws start up. Jaws does not start automatically nor do I get the Windows chimes at start up. I have followed the steps in the Jaws help dialogue: a.. Select the Start JAWS at the Log On Screen check box. b.. Clear the Start JAWS after Log On for all Users check box. c.. Select Always in the Start JAWS after Log On for this User combo box. d.. click OK to save settings. Each time I do the above I get chimes when I click OK and Jaws goes silent and I have to hit escape to get it talking again. When I go back to the dialogue the first two check marks are reversed. The same settings are set in the start up wizard. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Tom For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] if you are not ready for windows 10 beware of windows update
That's the point those who are imploring everyone to upgrade do not tell you. Here's a thought. We have until 2020 to use a fully supported Win7 which works with few problems. I prefer to use the computer as a productivity tool and will leave upgrade headaches to others. When I find that Win10 has enhancements which will materially help me in my work, then I'll consider upgrading. Meanwhile the status quo serves me fine. My job gives me challenges enough. Re: [JAWS-Users] Can i get step by step instructions for converting M4A to MP3 files?
Hi Ron, Here's a tutorial I wrote on how to use the batch converter, a feature that GoldWave has. This will allow you to do more than one file at a time, and you don't have to sit there and wait for the file to decompress in the main window. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. ***Begin Tutorial*** If you are in the Gold Wave main window, once it opens up, if you press the alt+F to get to the file menu, then press the letter B for batch conversions, it will open up another dialog box that you can do batch conversions with, or you can choose to do just one file, it's up to you. Once in that dialog box, tab to the button that says add, and press the space bar. Another dialog box will pop up, similar to the save as dialog box, so if you know exactly where the file is, go ahead and type it in. If you don't know the exact file location, just do a shift+tab to the window just above the one you're in, and backspace four or five times, or until your screen reader reads out my documents. Once it says that, just go ahead and find the folder where the files are that you want to convert. Once you find the files, go ahead and select them, either, contiguously, or non-contiguously, and tab to the open button and press the spacebar. Once you press the open button, you'll land back on the add button. If you have more files you want to convert, just press the add button and go through what I just outlined above. If you don't have anymore files to convert, you can tab to the check box that says, convert files to this format. Make sure this box is checked, so you can tell it what to convert the files to. Once you check that box, tab down to the combo box that asks you what file type to convert the files to. You must want to select the exact file type for all the files you want to convert. You can't do one file type for some of the files and another file type for another bunch of files you selected. That's why this function is called the batch conversion feature of Gold Wave. You can only convert the files to the same file type. Once you select the file format you want to convert the files to, tab down to the bitrate and frequency selection. I'm going to assume, for time's sake, that you already know all about bitrate and frequency rates, and just continue on from here to the next step. Once you set the bitrate and frequency rates, do a control+tab over to the file locations tab to set where you would like Gold Wave to save the converted files once their done. You have two choices here. You can either choose to save the converted files in their original folders, or save them in a different folder. This I leave up to you, and I can tell you that this tab is pretty much self-explanatory, so go ahead and make your settings as you see fit. Once you've made your selection, just tab over to the button that says begin, and press the spacebar. Once a dialog box pops up, with an ok button, you're files are done converting, and you can just press the ok button. You'll land back on the begin button, so just tab over to the cancel button, then you'll land on the Gold Wave main window. You can just alt+F4 out of that, and you can go delete the pre-converted files. Just make sure you clear your recycle bin, as those files will use up a lot of space on your computer. I would also recommend you check the files for length and bitrate choice, as you can always go back into your recycle bin and restore the files you deleted, so I suggest you check the files before you empty the recycle bin. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, and I'll endeavour to answer them as quickly as possible. Hi Joanne, Here you go: The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support. Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12, 13, 14, & 15 as well. 1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into the main root of the " C " drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11 most recent you would paste a copy of " J11.0.1430-32bit.exe " into the main root of the " C " drive. To open the main root of the " C " drive, go to the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and now you have the main root of the " C " drive open. 2. With the Jaws " .exe " pasted into the "C" drive, highlight the " .exe ", and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive. What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box instead of just the title. 3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC ," C:\ " without the quotes or spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following " /type repair" without the quotes but, with the spaces . So I’d like to listen to Jim’s tutorials on my small VRS unit to be easier to follow along. Until I pick up a couple of USB to nine pen adaptors so that I can have my dec-talk express back. [JAWS-Users] No acrobat reader on new Toshiba Win 10 laptop
Setting up my new Toshiba laptop and the frustration is almost overwhelming at times. At least when people upgrade to Win 10 they already have all their apps still installed. Learning a new system, a new keyboard, and trying to install programs is a challenge. Maybe the touch screen on the new laptop will come in handy for things like iTunes that cause super problems for me. So my first question is where do I get Acrobat reader safely and which version do I need? The users manual for the laptop is a pdf that insists on opening in Edge which sucks. I do have Firefox installed and listed as the default. The IE that was on here has extreme problems working with Win 10. Thanks for advice about Acrobat for now.
