Re: [JAWS-Users] Daisy Books?

2012-08-11 Thread Doris and Chris
The jaws Basic Training does come in audio. I think much better than
explaining on here is you trying it out. Install the FS Reader
program that comes with your jaws cd and use it to play the training material.

It is quite hard to explain and understandsomething that you are not
familiar with.

Also, you may want to look at

http://www.daisy.org/

which is the home of the DAISY Project. It will probably explain what
Daisy is all about far better than my feeble attempts at doing so.

NLS is short for National Library Service and it traditionally

digital audio books that either come on cartridges for their
hproprietary players or such players like the Victor Stream.

the jaws tutorials can be had in either daisy or mp3 format. If you

Dear Sir Richard,
The jaws tutoirals and help files FS puts out come in daisy
format. Daisy is an accessible audio and/or text that provides
for easy navigation by the reader. If you get nls contnet from
the BARD download site, this is in daisy format also. While nls

[JAWS-Users] Hotspot Clicker anyone or Taming a Talking Pony

Starting with version 1.63, the one-click host download manager
Mipony that i use for sites such as rapidshare, sendspace and
others has started talking to me delivering advertizing. since I
often hitch up my little pony and let it do its job over night,
having it talk and nicker at me constantly is more than a little annoying.

The solution to this unwanted chatter is to close the embedded mini
browser but this part of Mipony is inaccessible. There is a cross in
the upper righthand corner of the embedded minibrowser tab to close
the browser but jaws does not see this even with graphics set to all
and jumps right over it.

Is it possible to get hotspot clicker to click this cross shut,
possibly getting this set up with one-time sighted assistance?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 13 and windows 8

2012-05-11 Thread Doris and Chris
I have not had opportunity to work with win 8 nor with a non-demo
copy of jaws but I hthink things should work within limitations.

For one, in win 8, jawss video intercept is gone and jaws will need
to make do with the tools win8 itself offers.

Set jaws to use msaa for list views. you can enable this globally
within default.cfg. The option was first introduced in jaws 4.0.x and
win xp and has always been there since but only been used on demand.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Is FS Really Giving Up On JAWS 13?

2012-05-10 Thread Doris and Chris
I would not give anything to such statements unless they officialy
come from FS themselves.

It is fact that often fixes only come with new jaws releases but on
the other hand, FS several times also backported important features
to previous versions of jaws. Let's just wait if there is an official
statement and not discuss or speculate on nonexistent problems.

A tech from FS was reported to have told a seminar at the CSUN

it is too much of a mess.

They advised customers to wait for JAWS 14, which is where the new
fixes will be.

Re: [JAWS-Users] switching sound cards

2012-05-07 Thread Doris and Chris
In jaws 10 and up, there is an option to change the default soundcard
that jaws uses thru the utility menu.

The above option has always been available but required manually
editing the default.jfg file.

you change the default sound device windows uses in the sound applet
in control panel.

Most audio related programs will also have an option that allows you
to select the audio device the program uses independent of the
default system sound device. This is nothing that can be done with a
hotkey though either.

Actually, since the scripts were written for jaws 4.5.1 originally,
this is the location that jaws will look in by default. You need to
manually give the path to your script directory. since jaws 4.5.1 did
not differentiate between personal and all user settings at the

Hello,

like to know about the steps followed by me to add the scripts for jaws.

Since I have running multiple versions of Jaws 12 and 13 on the same
computer, pressed Insert+0, then closed the script manager before
continuing to the steps below.
After using the installer, there was a subfolder in my start menu labeled
Gutterstar. It contained another subfolder labeled PersonalAlarm. In the
PersonalAlarm folder, I have notice a shortcut labeled 1 PersonalAlarm.jss
Clicked on the shortcut labeled 1 PersonalAlarm.jss
The file got opened in the Jaws script manager. Once opened, pressed
Control+S.
To complete compile scripts and here I should get the message that scripts
are compiled and complete. But here I ggot the following
error:

Script Load Error
The file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\12.0\Settings\enu\PersonalAlarm.JSB could not be opened OK

Then I pressed Control+Shift+D. doing this, opened Default.jss
Pressed Control+End, then pressed enter key couple of times. At the bottom
of the file, typed the following line, Use PersonalAlarm.jsb
then press enter.
Pressed Control+S once again, then close the file.

After doing these steps, I should have got the confirmation of successfully
adding the scripts for personal alarm plugin but again I got the same error.

So I'm afraid anyone else out there having to use older versions of

Perhaps FS could be persuaded to release the source code of the

If I were to go back to a version of jaws that just used scripts with

2012-04-10 Thread Doris and Chris
Either a hardware synthesizer, something like a DECTalk, Doubletalk,
etc. or a second dedicated soundcard.

With the hardware synth, a used one with a serial to usb adapter will
do nicely usually and with a soundcard, any cheap cardfor US$20 or
less will do for speech output.

to type a particular search string and I know it will find the track

down the Dire Straits folder. I am able to search for the Dire

My mixer has multiple lines so I intend to keep my CD players and

I need to know if it is possible to keep the JAWS output separate
away from the actual music output in order that JAWS is not heard
through the PA system.and if so how?

I wondered about a multi channel sound card such as a Gigaport or
even using the built-in sound card and also another basic sound card
as well, one for the music and the other for JAWS, my other concern
is could I get a high enough output from JAWS so it can be heard via
headphones in a noisy environment. I haven't bought the laptop yet
either so if there is a laptop out there that has the facility to do
this without any additional sound cards that would be interesting too.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Audio Device Confusion

2012-03-17 Thread Doris and Chris
Plese. there was no problem with the soundcards or the driver. It was
total Recorder that set itself as the widnows default sound device
and since it did not close properly, did not undo this change.
therefore the sound devices got jumbled up. This should not have been
a problem, however, as jaws was set to use my external hardware
synthesizer. You may not go back long enough to remember hardware
synthesizers. This is not just an external soundcard but is a
hardwaredevice on its own that does not show up under windows's sound

Hardware synthesizers are legacy hardware devices. Other, and maybe
more familiar hardware synthesizers, are the DECTAlk synths (not to

I do not always do things the same way Mr. Dave does but I am very

access to these features , they probably will not be modified as you
modify the surrounding text. Obviously, you will not be able to add

Re: [JAWS-Users] ADD Shield?

2012-02-25 Thread Doris and Chris
Adshield is indeed still available from jfwlite and can be used.
since I switched to firefox for my default browser, i have not used
Adshield with Ie in a while. However, when i last installed and used
it, it did still help reduce popups as it always had. Adshield can be
used parallel to ie's popup blocker.

I am wondering, though, if your sister might not be better off
trying out nvda for a screenreader parallel to her jaws 7. And
remember that if she has jaws 7.0, she can download and install the
update to jaws 7.1 from fs's website for free. I would very
muchrecommend doing at least that and I am also recommending trying out nvda.

nvda has really been coming off age of late and the beta of the
upcoming nvda 2012.1 release has more capability and functionality
than nvda ever did. the learning curve for nvda should be manageable
for a jaws user as many of the keystrokes are similar. I am not
necessarily suggesting your sister should abandon jaws altogether but
with such an old jaws version, I think it would be good if she could
run nvda alongside it. It would allow her, for example, to use
Firefox as a browser and also, if she wanted to, upgrade to ie 8 as
nvda works well and reliable with both browsers.

since it lacks a video intercept, nvda is fully portable on the one
hand but also does not work with some programs that jaws does work
with. Also nvda's mouse emulation is not as good as that of jaws's
for the same reason. nvda does have ways to get around the screen
that jaws does not but its object navigation concept takes some
getting used to and I am still not very competent at it even though I
am generally quite computer savvy.

For many computer users, though, who do their regular bit of
chatting, surfing, email, playing music and a great many more things
on the computer, nvda is quite sufficient. I just think if your
sister learned to use it next to her version of jaws, she could only
gain and be moreflexible.

nvda can be gotten from

www.nvda-project.org

and is completely free though they always appreciate donations.

This might be a long shot asking if this is still available, but my sister

So, she calls me last night, and is frustrated with the pop-ups, I got her
to turn off the pop-up blocker and she was wanting that program she had
before her computer crashed this, ADD Shield. I told her I don't think
 it's
available any longer, but just thought I would ask here.
I remember it was once on the old Jaws lite site, is that still around?
I told her she better get inside window's update and hide that IE update
thingy, or one of these times it's gonna install without her knowing, and
 I
guess Jaws 7 wouldn't work for IE 8.
This would be a big and I mean big tragedy if she couldn't use her beloved

[JAWS-Users] Accessing Add-on Bar in Firefox 10.0

the hotkey to access the add-on bar in FF10 supposedly is

ctrl+/ (control+forward-slash)

but this did not produce any result regardless of whether or not I
entered the PassKey command in jaws.

am I missing something? Does jaws have its own set of commands to
access toolbars in firefox? The classic f8 command to access the
toolbar did not produce any result I could detect.

Thanks much.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Scan to text?

2012-01-25 Thread Doris and Chris
I have not used Textcloner personally but from what I have read about
it, it is just an accessible ocr package that is not self-voicing
like the $$$ packages but allows you to use your screenreader for speech.

Check the file menu if it has an Open entry or just try a

ctrl+o

I am pretty sure it will allow you to open some image formats at
least and then run ocr on them.

When an ocr program works with the scanner, the scanner takes a
picture of the print material you put on it and then saves the
picture as an image file that your text recognition program - Text
Cloner in your case - works its magic on, i.e. performs the optical
character recognition. When you feed it an image file, you just

They can scan the document and send the image file to you. If you
have an older version of Microsoft Office you can do the OCR from
within Word. If you have a newer version of Microsoft Office you
can use Microsoft OneNote to do the OCR.

If you have neither, but have JAWS 13, you can try the Convenient
OCR package for JAWS.

If you have none of the above, you can try submitting the image to
one of the free on-line OCR engines.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Scan to text?

2012-01-24 Thread Doris and Chris
Just as we blind folks do: by using a scanner and ocr software and
then either paste the text into an email or sending you the
accessible document as attachment.

Most scanners come with some kind of ocr tthat is not necessarily
accessible but would get the job done for a sighted person. Office
2k3 and earlier came with Document Imaging', which was actually a
fairly decent and accessible ocr solution

Re: [JAWS-Users] in the market for a new laptop

2012-01-14 Thread Doris and Chris
There are indeed different versions of jaws for 32bit and 64bit
windows but the price is the same. Different prices make a difference
not with 32bit or 64bit but with which version of the operating
system is being used, i.e. whehter jaws standard (for home) or
professional systems is required. These exist in both 32bit and 64bit flavors.

I am still on xp myself but I think I heard that the highest
version of win 7 that will work wiht the standard license of jaws is
Home premium. this is to be taken into account when buying the
computer with an operating system preinstalled. For most users, the
Home Premium version of windows should be all they ever need.

As for a hardware suggestion for a laptop, Chris and I both bought
Asus laptops that were affordable and which are very rugged and come
with a full-sized keyboard including numpad. We bought ours without
operating system and are running xp on them each but they came with 2
gigs of RAM (expandable to 4 gigs) and are capable of running win 7
in both 32bit or 64bit.

I certainly would not go with 64bit. The amount of complaints we've

that if your pc only has 4GB or less of memory, 32bit windows is
fine. if it has 4GB or more, then they recommend 64bit but in
reality 32bit can work on windows with up to 16GB of ram using PAE
or physical address extention technology. this probably isn't the
place to discuss 32bit verses 64bit, but i've a feeling that you're
paying extra for jaws 64bit, i haven't checked out the latest prices
but i do know that there are separate versions of jaws for 32bit

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS gets confused

2012-01-12 Thread Doris and Chris
I have no way of verifying this but check in yourinstallation folder
of windows LIve Mail 2011 for the name of the program executable. Is it

msimn.exe

this has been the name of the Microsoft Email client from since
before outlookk Express which was introduced origianly with Internet
Explorer 4.0, hwhich came as part of windows 95 OSR2 or was available
as an upgrade to I.e. 3.0.

the above name of the program executable originally was short for
Microsoft Internet Mail and News but was kept the same for Outlook
Express over several versions and, I am guessing, may still be the
name for the current Microsoft Mail client.

This would explain your jaws's getting confused as jaws looks at
the name of the program executable that currently has focus and loads
settings/scripts accordinglyly.

the script files that are loaded then internatally have a way of
determining which version of a program, i.e. Microsoft Word 2003 or
2010, is being used. This allows jaws to know the differences and
interact with the program as needed by the different versions.

If the name of the program program executable is the same as with
Microsoft Internet Mail and News and outlook Express, and, my
guess is, also with windows mail and windows LIve Mail, this to jaws
is the same program but with a different version number. So if jaws
announced outlook Express rather than Windows LIve Mail it got
confused on the version of the program you are using.

Do a

jawskey+escape

to refresh the settings being loaded and you should be good to go.

Now this is hoping I have not produced a lot of baloney and that my
guess is right and makes sense even though I am still in the
prediluvian and we actually still possess a working machine running
win 95 A ... g

Whehter or not a computer boots without monitor depends on the

Re: [JAWS-Users] sound cards with jaws

2012-01-03 Thread Doris and Chris
I think it has been a long while since there were any issues with
jaws and software speech causing trouble on a particular sound card.
This used to be the case on some 1st generation Creative Soundblaster
Live cards that caused eloquence to crackle but this was more a
hardware and driver issue than a problem of jaws and eloquence itself.

I had the dubious pleasure of using one of these legacy sb live cards
in one of our systems recently and I was not too sad to send the card
back into retirement after replacing it with another card - a US$20
pci card with a cheapie CM chip.

Any onboard audio or cheapie usb sound device should be good enough
to run your speech thru.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Skype Question.

2011-12-25 Thread Doris and Chris
This is related to her jaws version. It is either caused by running a
jaws script version not matching the jaws version being used or by
scripts not appropriate for the skype version used.

With focus on the main skype window, try recompiling the scripts.
(ctrl+shift+c - if things haven't changed too much)or jawskey+NumRow0
and then ctrl+s to recompile while focused on the skype window.

also while focused on the skype window, do a jawskey+q to find out
the script version she is running. for skype 3.8, it should be revision 653b.

If she is running jaws 13, the installer for the skype scripts might
not work correctly from what i heard some people say. Get the zip
archive of the appropriate scripts and install and recompile them manually.

2011-12-15 Thread Doris and Chris

Dear MIss Ariana,

I am sure more than I are intested in a sapi version of DECTAlk. I
know that a Miss Margret on here especially would love it as she has
mentioned her frustration of DECTalk Access32 not working with
anything higher than jaws 10. IN fact, this is of interst beyond this
jaws list as a sapi version of DECTAlk would work not only with jaws
but anything that supported sapi. I know nvda users would love to
have another light-weight but better sounding synth to use with nvda.

I had heard about a sapi version being worked on but not of it having
been released.

so why not just post the homepage of the program or is it being sold
by GW Micro as DECTalk Access used to be?

Also the price tag would be intersting to know.

Anyway, I think we all would benefit from the information and not
just me. Maybe this shiny new DECTalk was released just in time for Christmas?

Thanks for any Information!

Eagerly and curiously awaiting your reply!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 13 and latest skype

2011-12-06 Thread Doris and Chris

Dear Miss Kathy,

The tutorial for skype 4.x at

http://marrie.org/skype_tutorials_draft/

may be somewhat useful. However, skype is now at version 5.7 for the
latest beta and, while the really major change in its interface was
from version 3.8 to 4.0, skype is underconstant development and has
been and is changing from version to version.

Hosting a skype conference was much easier under skype 3.x IMO. I am
personally still running skype 3.8 on my xp box.

you also may want to try skypetalking from

http://code.google.com/p/skypetalking/downloads/list

this is a 3rd-party plugin or add-on for skype that has been
developed specifically to increase accessibility to skype for the
blind. since it was originally developed for users of nvda, it
duplicates some of the functionality of the jaws scripts for
skype. However, it has come a long way since its original
inception and has functions and keystrokes different from the skype
scripts. Among other things, it offers an alternative user interface
to skype itself and does have some keystrokes especialy for handling
conference calls.

I personally find skypetalking somewhat verbose, especially when used
in combination with jaws and the scripts for skype and therefore
rarely use it. When both the skype scripts for jaws and skypetalking
are configured to compliment each other and to avoid duplication of
announcements, the combination can be quiteuseful.

One thing to remember about skypetalking is that it is an plugin for
skype that uses the skype api to get the information it reads and
handle its many function. This is the way the scripts for window eyes
read and work with skype. Skypetalking, like any applet or plugin
that accesses the skype api, needs to be authorized for use with
skype. You will need to do this the first time you launch
skypetalking. depending on the version of skype you are using, you
either get a dialog box from skype asking permission for skypetalking
to be used with skype or you need to allow it directly in the
advanced section of skype's options.

There is, unfortunately, no extensive tutorial for skypetalking.
LIke with any new program you are learning, explore the help
dokumentation and its many options. I especially recommend looking at
the keyboard section that is found in skypetalking's system tray
options. Here is a list of all of skypetalking's keyboard hotkeys and
their purpose and you can also change hotkeys here if needed.

Re: [JAWS-Users] A video intercept problem and sluggishness with thunderbird

2011-12-06 Thread Doris and Chris

Having no experience with 64bit systems, these suggestions will be general.

1. Turn off automatically start jaws in the basic options.

2.use nvda at the logon screen if you need speech
at this point. This will also speak the task manager etc.

3. Manually put a shortcut to jaws into your
startup folder so that jaws is started as an
application rather than a service.

No idea on how to fix the underlying video
intercept problem as you seem to have gone thru
all the suggested motions for this already.

Finally, if the problem only started with the
november update, uninstall jaws including all
shared components and try reinstalling the previous build of jaws 13.

You'll need to use your jaws cursor a bit during installation but

Re: [JAWS-Users] Tandum

2011-12-03 Thread Doris and Chris
Now that is a new one on me! We Europeans usually speak more than one
language but Chinese is not among those! g I know that jaws comes
up in the system language on the box it is installed onbut it must
have confused your Taxan accents for Chinese. *giggle*

Being a nonnative speaker of English, A Southern - and a Texan
accent in particular - took some getting used to when we first
encountered it many years ago but it didn't sound quite like Chinese.
But then a friend from Texas during an English teaching campaign put
on by my husband's church mistook a French exchange student who had
enrolled in the English classes for a Chinese at first ... *g*

glad you got your problem fixed and thanks for sharing the story.
I'll keep this. *g*

It came up speaking Chinese. I had my bro in law and we all heard it
speaking this as wellas he was trying to assist me, but
unfortunately, we are just plain Texans with our own unique language
I might add, but this one had us in a pickle.

I have no idea what he did nor does he, but some how it got on
English. I think I must have done something by pressing keys for
narrator and getting it on Chinese, it was a challenge I do not want to repeat.

The windows narrator works very well in win/7 the voice Anna is very
clear as well, in case y'all need or want to know, sure beats chinese, lol.

Dear Sir Richard,

Your post reminded me that I had not updated Spyware Blaster in some time.

I downlnoaded version 4.5 from Major Geeks and just installed it
here. The basic version with manual updating is still free for
personal and educationaluse and according to the program always wil be.

You'll need to use your jaws cursor a bit during installation but
otherwise the program is fine. If you still have Miss Debbie's old

Re: [JAWS-Users] Latest Abbyy FineReader and jaws

2011-11-23 Thread Doris and Chris
I have been using Finereader since its version 3.0 at about the time
I lost my sight. The interface has changed several times over the
years. FR has always been accessible and usable by the blind, much
more so than, say, Omnipgage. Over here in Europe, it is _the_ocr
program used by the blind and, when the client is eligible, often
included in a reading solution package financed by the health
insurance or other organization.

I have only had a go at a demo of FR 11 as we usually get FR at a
much reduced price when the next version is released. however, FR 11
is certainly usable and its recognition is, as always, very very good.

FR's interface underwent a major change between its version 8 and 9.
It is still accessible and still usable but just quite different.
Whether you will be comfortable with it or not, depends largely on
how you use FR and what you do or do not consider accessible and what
your needs are. FR's reconition has always been amazingly
accurate and it has recongized just about anything I've slapped on
my scanner including poor quality print paperbooks yellow with age,
typewriter pages or even mimeographed publications of a few decades
ago. FR never failed me and never took even a fraction of the time I
spent with some ocr packages specifically for the blind that I worked
with. When the fine engine of a particular FR version was used with
OB or K1K, I always found without fail that recognition in FR itself
with the same version of its fine engine was better and much more painless.

The setup I have yere is that I scan my books and everyday
correspondence, forms, or documents my husband and I need electronic
copies of wiht FR 7, which I still prefer for its interface and ease
of use (due to my being very very familiar with it and my preference
for working in FR's internal editor.) If I need to recognize a pdf
document, maybe even a bilingual one, or a poor quality document, i
use FR 10 on it because its reconition accuracy has improved
dramatically since its version 7 or 8. Even on some of the bilingual
texts that I ran thru fr 10, the accuracy was amazing even though I
had just hset it to automatic language reconition.

If you are a longtime user of Finerader, you know that you can
download a free demo copy of it from Abbyy's homepage. I would
defiinitley advise you to do this. Also, you can keep your trusted
old FR 8 on the same system as they install to different folders.
You just need to keep the batches each saves separately as FR's
batches are not backward compatible.

Finally, depending on what country you live in, you might be able to
get the previous version of FR at a much much reduced price. I do not
quite remember the price of the latest version of FR at the time. I
think it may be around 200 Euros, which is roughly about US$300. The
previous version may be availablefor as little as 1/4 of the price of
the current version or even a little less. Unless you specifically
need a feature that comes with the latest version, you are probalby
going to be just fine with the previous one, especially in light of
the fact that the latest version of k1k or ob usually use the fine
engine of the previous version of the current retail version of fr itself.

I hope this was a little helpful and that you will find the version
of FR that works best for you and is the right size for your wallet.
And if FR 8 does all you need it to do - and it might well do that -
just remember if it ain't broke ... *g*

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 13 failing to load on start up!

2011-11-21 Thread Doris and Chris
Not really but have you tried loading jaws via the startup group
rather than as a service?

In the past, sometimes some antivirus software that also loaded early
on in the boot process interfered with jaws.

Loading jaws from the startup group is the same aas brining it up
with your jaws hotkey and will launch jaws only after your desktop is
completely loaded and after the login screen if you are displaying
that. If you need speech at the login screen, you may want to
consider installing nvda and having that come up at the login screen
rather than jaws.

 Hi All,

Jaws 13, windows XP home. After installing jaws 13 from the DVD and
 setting
it to load up on start-up I rebooted the computer and it won't load
 up.
Tried restarting a couple of times but it fails to start. However, if
 I then
do the jaws unload keystrokes of alt + F4 followed by enter and use
 the
keys, control + Alt + J it will load up. It acts like jaws is loaded
 but
just not talking. I uninstalled then reinstalled from the download
 package
on the FS web site but still the same behaviour.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas as to why it would act like
 this.

 Many thanks,

 Paul.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 13 update

2011-11-19 Thread Doris and Chris
Download the full installer from fs's website if you have not done
so already. Try to install this on top of your previous build of jaws 13.

If this fails also, make sure you have nvda to fall back on - download from

www.nvda-project.org

then uninstall your previous jaws 13 including shared components and
do a clean install of the latest jaws 13.0.527 that you downloaded
from fs's website.

If the above is daunting, get someone sighted and/or experienced to help.

You may want to keep nvda as a backup screenreader on your system.
It doesn't need a video intercept and has saved my own heiney more
than once. also, if you give nvda a good workout, you may find it
does a lot of what you need and want a screenreader to do and it
comes with a very user-friendly price tag ... *smile*

Re: [JAWS-Users] msconfig and the services tab

2011-11-11 Thread Doris and Chris
I am not sure who gave you that advice but you do
not just go and turn off all services but you
better know what those services are and what they do before messing with them.

I am not sure what version of windows you are
using but you want to get a list of the services
running under your operating ssystem and what
they do. You better make very sure you know what
service does what and what you need or want on yoursystem.

I am a pretty advanced computer user and probably
a bit geeky too but I would never ever just turn
something off without knowing what it does and
without knowing how to reverse the changes I
made. Some people are just irresponsible with the advice they give.

Also, msconfig is _not_ repeat NOT the place to
disable services. You do that in the services
applet - and that that is not visible to the average user has good reasons.

There is a bunch of stuff in windows that can be
turned off or set to only launch manually - the
latter is what you need the services applet for -
but you better be prepared to do your
homework and know what you are doing. So three
lashes with a wet noodle for messing around with
something you don't seem to be too knowledgeable
on and something a bit more severe to whoever got you started on that. ;-p

I don't want to discourage you at all but rather
encourage you to know more whawt is going on on
your computer and then take control. if you
rather do not get that involved, putting more ram
in your computer might be another choice.
however, information is availble on those
services and if done right, tweaking the system
can really speed it up. But never ever turn off
anything without knowing the consequences - and
being able to reverse them. Getting sighted
assistance is, of course, normal but a cop-out
IMO if you do something as geeky and get yourself
into trouble. If you do this sort of thing,
knowing how to get out yourself should be part of
the package. And also, if you play, turn off one
app or one service at a time so you can keep
track of what might give you problems.

When I learned about services and what to
turnoff, i had a list with a description of what
did what and turned off quite a bunch. I only
messed up once and therefore was able to reverse the problem quite easily.

I hope you will enjoy learning more about your
system and what goes on under the hood and end up
knowing more and with a sleeker more responsibe system.

Take care and have fun but stay safe!

Re: [JAWS-Users] re-msconfig and the services tab

2011-11-11 Thread Doris and Chris

Dear Mr. Jim,

First of all, I meant no offense and did not
intend to cany name calling. Geeky in my book
is a compliment rather than a deragotory term but
then my book is a bilingual one and I may not
always get the terminology or register of
language right. So again my apology as no offense was intended.

I am absolutely self-taught on the computer also
back from the dos days when I reformatted and
reinstalled my first computer at least half a
dozen times in one weekend before I had it up and
running properly. I did learn how to install the
os and programs that way for sure! (I was sighted then though.)

I know what I can and cannot help with, though.
i'm afraid I have never touched or even just seen
a vista or win 7 system and would be foolish to
give advice on it. I know about services a little
bit but feel at home only with xp and 2k. I wish
I had a box capable of handling 7 as I would love
to learn the current os but we have father old
hardware here that will not handle a newer os.

I learned the hard way also to not necessarily
trust tech support people. They may know some
things but may not have any idea about some
others and especially not when access technology
comes into the picture. I may also be too
critical of some people though. I do want to know
what is being done to my system and would read up
on any changes anyone proposes to make to it. I
also would never want anyone just make some
changes to my system that I do not understand and
do not know how to reverse. I am probably some
help desk persons' nightmare at times.

To learn more about windows services and what to
disable or leave, you might want to google for
something like windows 7 and disabling windows
services. This should turn up some results that
give a list of services under win 7 with what
they do and what can be turned off. I do have
such listings for win xp and will be glad to
share but could not guarantee that or how much of
the information is relvant under win 7.

Again my apologies. I have utmost respect for
anyone learning computers - or anything for that
matter - on their own. I respect anyone who is
willing to learn something new and doesn't expect
to be spoond-fed. I wish I could help more with
your quest but I am not qualified. I am sure
there are others on this list who are more
up-to-date with their technology and who will be
happy to help you out. I was just outraged at the
idea of someone telling you to turn off all the
services. It makes me wonder now if there was a
misunderstanding. I wish you all the best of luck
and success with your quest and hope you come out
with a nicely tuned and obediently and happily
running system and also with some new experience
and the kind ofthrill I feel when having solved a
problem or accomplished a task or goal.

Sincerely

Doris

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 13 settings.

2011-11-06 Thread Doris and Chris

Dear Sir Richard,

The installation disk for jaws should be the same for both jaws
standard and jaws pro as the installer is the same for both versions.
Which you have on your system depends on the kind of authorization
you have. If you purchased the authorization for jaws pro, you are
good to go on any system. With a key for jaws pro, you can install on
any supported version of windows whereas with an authorization for
jaws standard, you can only install on the home flavors of windows.

When downloading an installer from the web, you need to make sure you
get the right one for either 32bit or 64bit - with your xp systems,
32bit is the only one that works, though - while when installing from
the disk, the right installer is used automatically according to the
system you are installing onto.

Good luck and enjoy your new and shiny jaws 13!

You do not need a scanner for the ocr that comes with jaws and
therefore do not need to worry about compatibility. Rather you should
check if there are any compability requirements with the ocr program
you scan your books, mail, etc. with.

[JAWS-Users] J-Downloader with JAWS

2011-10-10 Thread Doris and Chris
since my one-click host favorite downloader Mipony no longer properly
works with Sendspace, i have been looking for an alternative. Much to
my surprise I discovered that j-downloader works with jaws - sort of
anyway. As the name suggests, this is a java app. I have the java
runtime and java access bridge installed on my xp sp3 box.

I was able to add links to the donwload list by having jdownloader
monitor the clipboard adn then start the download process with the
continue with all button that has a shortcut.

Navigating the program is very cumbersome at best though and I am
wondering if there are any scripts for the app or if someone is
actualy using the program with jaws and can help me get started with
some memonics or advice on how to best configure both jaws and jdownloader.

any help is much much appreciated. i like jdownloader because it is
portable and fairly straightforward in its use apparently but this is
the first time, really, that I am using a java app and I surely can
use all the help I can get!

this is what I usually do. Even with lists that allow use of the bcc
field, i just go to send again in my email program and manually
enter the address for each list that I want to post to rather then
try to use the bcc field or some othe rmeans to address the same
message to multiple recipients. i have each list or addressee I write
to on a regular basis in my address book and thus sending a message
is just a matter of typing the alias for that recipient in the to
field of each message to be posted. this doesn't really take longer
than typing the recipient into a cc' bcc field of one message.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Low on virtual memory

2011-10-03 Thread Doris and Chris

Do you have a second internal hd in your box?

You can manually set the size of the swap file (virtual memory); the
recommended size is 1.5 times the amount of hardware RAM in your
system. however, this is a setting you should only takcle if you are
comfotable doing so and also know what you are doing. *g* If you set
this up wrong, your box might not boot anymore and that's something
to be avoided. So maybe you have a computer geeky friend to walk you
thru the steps the first time. Once you know your way aroudn the
settings and get comfrotable with it, this is not difficult at all
and i have manually been configuring my swap file for more than 10
years and going back to win 9x..

If you have a second physical hard drive in your box (an internal not
an external drive) you can further speed up your system by putting
most of your virtual memory on the second drive, preferably on a
partition of its own so the page file does not become fragmented.
Again, though, this is something you want to be sure you know what
you are doing so that you don't accidentally render your box inoperational.

If having the page file on a 2nd drive is not an option, there are
utilities out there that will defrag system files - and the page file
(virtual menory is such a system file) during bootup as they cannot
be accessed and defragged during regular windows operation because
they are in use then.

There are several good defrag programs available that have the option
of defragging system files at bootup. I like open source and free and
am using ultradefrag for this . And to get this back on course *g*,
Ultradefrag does work quite nicely with jaws. *smile*

Before changing settings, though, make sure your computer is running
at its best being properly maintained with regular spyware checks,
not running unnecessary programs and services in the
background, being defragged regularly, etc. and if you do decide to
monkey around with your virtual menory settings, be really careful,
create a restore point before you do, and preferably have someone
walk you thru the steps in the beginning. This said, I monkeyed for
myself but I have the luxury of having a fully sighted hubby who
saves my butt every now and then when I get in trouble. *g*

Good luck and safe computing!

Dear Miss Jenny,

Winrar is quite accessible but is commercial software. If you only
need to unpack .rar archives, you might want to give 7-zip from
http://www.7-zip.org/

a try. 7-zip is free open source software and, if anything, more
accessible. It works with jaws, nvda, window eyes, etc.

It can open .rar, zip and about a couple dozen other archive types.
Additionally, unlike other decompression software packages, it will

Re: [JAWS-Users] Issue with IE8 Jaws9 Windows XP

2011-08-28 Thread Doris and Chris
jaws 9.0 only marginally supports ie 8.0. Make sure you are using the
very latest build of jaws 9.0 available for download from fs's
website and not the initial relese you got on cd or a subsequent
earlier update.

If this menu problem only occurs in IE, you may also want to consider
using Firefox as an alternative browser. If using jaws 9.0, use
Firefox 3.6, which is currently still being maintained and updated.

You may also want to download and install the latest jaws 12 build
and run it in 40-minute demo mode to see if the problem with ie 8.0
persists when you run the latest version of jaws. jaws 12 should
coexist peacefully with your earlier version and be available in
demo mode when needed.

Make sure you have all the latest updates and patches for Windows
installed and that your video card drivers are up to date and that
you have your windows color depth and screen resolution set up
appropriately. the problem you describe with the menu bar sound a bit
like what i have seen in some programs where I needed to define
custom background colors to get the menu bar to read but this should
not be an issue in Internet Explorer.

also, you may want to give nvda a try it is very good for web
browsing and a lot of other everyday tasks and a good alternative or
backup screenreader especially when you cannot afford running the
latest and greatest of the comercial offerings.

9.0 on her 2k box. Before anyone suggests upgrading, this is not an
option. Her computer won't run anything newer than 2k and jaws 9.0 is
the latest jaws version to run on win 2k anyway and she can't afford
upgrading jaws either.

She is trying to use Thunderbird 3.1 and Firefox 3.6 on her machine.
I made sure that she is running the latest jaws 9.0 build available
from Fs's website.

Are there scripts for Thunderbird that wil work with jaws 9.0?

Firefox is working fairly well with jaws 9.0. However, the Firefox
scripts are not being called so that some of the Firefox specific
keystrokes are not available when running firefox 3.x. I vaguely
remember reading some time ago that there was a fix for this by which
jaws could be made to load the firefox scripts properly when
encoutering a firefox 3.x version. Could someone please refresh my
memory on how to do this?

Thanks much.

Doris

Re: [JAWS-Users] Shared components

2011-08-19 Thread Doris and Chris

Dear Miss Maria,

Shared components get updated to the ltatest version each time jaws
is installed as these shared components (the jaws video intercept and
some shared libraries etc.) are downward compatible. Thus if you have
5 versions of jaws installed on your system, you do not have 5 video
intercepts installed but only one, the one that comes with the latest
version of jaws that you have on your system, and all five versions
of jaws that you have on your computer use that same video intercept
of your newest shiniest version of jaws.

Thus unless you have reason to remove the video intercept, you should
indeed leave shared components when you uninstal your older version
or your newer versions of jaws would not run until you reinstall the
video intercept and other shared components. In fact, if you have
need to uninstall the video intercept, you should do so from the
video intercept manager of your latest version of jaws. I pray,
though, that you never have reason to mess with your video intercept
but just have it quietly doing its job.

Warm regards and God Bless,

Doris

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS License

2011-08-16 Thread Doris and Chris
Yes, you can install jaws on more than one computer if you are the
single user of those computers. You may have jaws on a desktop system
and a laptop or on a computer in the den and one in your bedroom or
whatever need you have.

If you have a hardware dongle, you can take your authorization from
computer to computer even and authorize the one you are working on
each time you change computers.

with an ILM license, I think you get three keys at a time if that
hasn't changed and can thus install jaws and authorize it for use on
three computers. If you have more than three, you need to talk to FS
and explain the situation and see if they give you extra keysas
needed or maybe suggest you use a dongle instead.

If you just sometimes need to work on someone else's computer, I
would suggest using a portable version of nvda or, if jaws is
required, run jaws in 40-minute mode rather than putting a key on it
that is hhardly ever used. nvda is quite good for computer
mmaintenance and basic tasks such as websurfing or email.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and wireless keyboard

2011-08-15 Thread Doris and Chris

the numpad right mouse key will open whatever the jaws cursor is focused on.

If you are not happy with shift+f10 for the context menu shortcut,
you need to route your jaws to the p c cursor to get the focus where
you need it to do a right click on the file or folder you want to get
the context menu on.shift+f10 is easier and quicker imo as it
substitutes for the applications key directly.

Thank you. The only problem with this seems to be, that although the right

bring up another context menu on the same file that gives me file options
such as play in WinAmp. Do you know why the difference in opening a context

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS SCRIPTS WITH CURRENT SKYPE SOFTWARE

2011-08-14 Thread Doris and Chris

Hi,John,

The Jonathan Mosan tutoiral was made when skype 2.5 was the current
version and skype 2.6 was in beta.

It is a good tutorial and some of the basic concepts certainly still
apply. You did not tell us, however, which version of skype you are
using. the skype interface underwent several major changes over the
year. the most current tutorial I know of is for skype 4.x. It can be found at

http://www.skype.com/

this is a free tutorial but quite good. it is probably the closest to
the current 5.x skype version even though skype's interface has
changed again some between the 4.x and 5.x cycle.
Skype is usable without scripts as it has inbuilt accessibility.
However, the skype scripts do make it easier to get around skype and
provide such features as automatic reading of chat messages..

I personally would try skype without scripts first and get familiar
with the program's layout, inbuilt keyboard shortcuts menus and such
and then go and get the scripts appropriate for your version of skype.

Happy skyping!

Doris

2011-08-14 Thread Doris and Chris

Dear Miss Vicky,

I am using a logitech wireless keyboard with jaws just now. Mine
still has all the keys, however.

You may want to look for a keyboard remapping utility. Mr. Scott aka
Arizona Blue' back on 4tp talked about such a keyboard mapping
utility. I think the one he used and recommended was called
keytweak. I do not remember the home page for it but consulting
your favorite search engine should turn this up.

jaws has an inbuilt utility called keyboard manager with which you
can reassign jaws specific keyboard shortcuts. I am not aware,
however, of this being able to remap windows keys.

the shift+f10 key combo still works for me to bring up the context
menu. this is a windows keyboard shortcut and should work independent
of your jaws version or, indeed, independent of what screenreader you use.

enjoy that new keyboard and the freedom from being tied to a wire!

Dear Miss Margaret,

You should not have to activate your jaws 9.0 in order to turn off
the run jaws first option in it.

when it comes up after bootup and asks to be activated, have it run
in 40-minute mode instead. This is plenty of time to go into its
basic options and to uncheck the run first jaws (or run jaws at
windows startup or whatever it is called these days.

when you have unchecked the option in jaws 9, tab to the OK tutton,
enter on it. then close out jaws 9 and bring up jaws 10 or whatever
version you want to have coming up when you start your computer. go
into its options and and check the checkbox to have it start
automatically. This should fix the problem.

I can only guess to the reason why your jaws 9 wants to be activated
when your 10 is working fine. Did you by any chance get a new jaws
license in between so that the newer jaws maybe has a diferent
serial number? You cold check the serial number - not the long
activation code) when you bring up the different versions to fix the
