[JAWS-Users] activate a mouse over link

2013-03-01 Thread John R Vaughn
List, I am trying to use the Morningstar investment web site.

I have noticed to do certain things, I have to activate a mouse over link
which will then bring up a list of actions in a list that will enable me to
either edit, delete, add holdings to the portfolio etc.

Jaws says mouse over but when I do a insert F1, jaws says it is a link and
enter on it to activate the link.

My sighted wife can activate this type of link by moving the mouse to the
link and be given the various options.

When I try and enter on the link with the PC cursor, or route the jaws
cursor to the link and replicate a click on the link, nothing happens.

Is there some sort of special jaws command I am missing.

John

Robin, Thank you so very much.
The secret here was to use the
Insertplus control and enter combination to replicate the application cursor
going over the link to produce the mouse over and bring up the desired
list of actions.

I searched google re: JAWS MouseOver Commands. This was the result:

OnMouseOvers
Web page authors use OnMouseOvers to display text or images when a visitor
moves the mouse pointer over a particular part of the page. The Freedom
Scientific Product Overview sample page provides an example of a way in
which OnMouseOvers are often used. On this page, when a user moves the mouse
pointer over one of the product names, which are actually graphic links, the
page displays a brief summary of the product. When the user clicks the
graphic, the page takes them to the Freedom Scientific Web site to provide
additional resources.

NOTE: Two different things happen here depending on whether you simply move
the mouse cursor over the graphic or actually activate the link.

JAWS says, OnMouseOver when you move to an element with an OnMouseOver.
OnMouseOver is an attribute that Web page authors add to HTML elements to
enable OnMouseOver functionality.

Open the Freedom Scientific Product Overview sample page. Read through the
page first. It is relatively short. Notice that after the first heading,
there are four OnMouseOver links which JAWS identifies. Continue reading and
you will hear a brief bit of text that begins This page is designed to
demonstrate the use of the OnMouseOver attribute. When a mouse user moves
the pointer over the image links ... Go ahead and read through this text.
When you activate an OnMouseOver in the next series of steps, this text will
change on the screen.

Activating an OnMouseOver with JAWS actually moves the mouse cursor over the
graphic for you. You do this by pressing INSERT+CTRL+ENTER when you hear
JAWS announce OnMouseOver links. To see how JAWS interacts with OnMouseOvers
on Web pages, do the following:

Go to the Freedom Scientific Product Overview sample page and press DOWN
ARROW until you move to the one of the graphic links with an OnMouseOver.
Press INSERT+CTRL+ENTER to activate the OnMouseOver for that link.
JAWS announces that the page has changed at a certain line. On the screen,
the brief descriptive text that summarized how to use the page with a mouse
is replaced by text that describes the product.
Press J, type the line number JAWS spoke, and press ENTER. JAWS moves you
directly to the place on the page where the new text is displayed. Using the
Jump To Line command (J) in this manner allows you to read new information
that appears on the page when you activate an OnMouseOver. Take a moment to
read through the new text.
Press SHIFT+J to move back to the graphic link. Holding down SHIFT when
using the Jump To Line command moves you back to your previous location on
the page.
Press ENTER to activate the link. This takes you to the Freedom Scientific
Web site. You can press BACKSPACE to return to the previous page.
Try moving to the other OnMouseOver links and following these same steps for
more practice.
JAWS Tip: Notice how pressing ENTER and pressing INSERT+CTRL+ENTER can
produce very different results with some Web page elements. Pressing
INSERT+CTRL+ENTER simulates the effect of moving the mouse pointer over the
element, while pressing ENTER simulates the effect of clicking the element.

Hi.

If you're using Adobe Reader 11, here you must uncheck the first 2
checkbox'es in Settings, Security Extended.

This will give access to screenreader's as Jaws to pdf documents, even they
are protected.

[JAWS-Users] unidentified imbedded link in a word Zoom in IE, and can I see everything.

2013-02-12 Thread John R Vaughn
Dan, do not know about the zoom resolution issue, but as to the other
issue of some pages having links imbedded in words that do not say link,
I have come across this most recently on the new delta.com web page for
Delta Airlines. I am not enough of a techie to understand why or how this
happens and jaws not alert you to the matter, but it happens. So when in
doubt these days, just enter on a word that seems to be for what you want.
I look forward to a post by someone who can help us resolve this
unidentified imbedded links issue.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Zoom in IE, and can I see everything.

Maybe I am missing something. Here is an interesting little issue I've
recently stumbled across. I wonder if I've been missing a lot of stuff over
the years.

I was attempting to do some work via a web site. My coworkers told me to
click on some link. No matter what, I could not find that link anywhere on
the page. I had a sighted coworker take a look at my screen and they
confirmed the link was not there. They showed me the section where it
should be but I only saw about four links in that section, and they had
maybe 8.

I went to view, then zoom, and I moved it from 100% to 75% and suddenly more
links appeared in that section. I moved it from 75% to 50% and suddenly,
all the links, including the one I was trying to find, appeared.

Now, should I always keep my zoom setting to the minimum? How do I even
know when I am not seeing everything that should be there?

As another little issue, seems like in HTML 5, objects that are clickable do
not announce as being such. So, sometimes I am struggling to figure out how
to find some piece of information, only to have a coworker to tell me to
click on something that just appears as a piece of text to me. It doesn't
say, link, doesn't say mouse-over, nothing, it is just text. Am I supposed
to click on every word on a page now?

Flor, This happens when I am just booting up the computer. Then the
computer gives me a message to the effect that if you have not seen this
message before, turn off the computer and restart the computer. I can do
this using the on/off button.
Jaws is not talking when this happens.
The message also gives you steps to be taken if you have seen this message
before or had this happen before.
I have not gone through this door Number 2 yet as it will require sighted
assistance I suspect.
When the computer is attempting to repair itself, you are asked if you want
to use the restore feature and I have this selected by a sighted person.
Again, this may not happen but every two or three weeks and after the
restore is completed, things work just fine until two or three weeks later.
Today I went into the start menu and unchecked everything except Jaws so
that the computer has less things to start during boot up.

[JAWS-Users] adding hot key to Controlling The Volume

2012-12-13 Thread John R Vaughn
I agree, what a nice solution to be able to quickly access the controls to
change volume.
I have also made a hot key so that if I do a control key plus alt key and
letter V, I am in the dialogue box where I can page up or page down to raise
volume on the fly. Or I can tab to jaws or internet explorer and change
those volumes independently.
This is handy for me as I listen to Serious radio on my laptop and listen to

Thanks very much for this, such a simple solution.
I put a shortcut key of alt+ctrl+shift+v.
The focus lands straight on the slider bar, it works in the reverse order
e.g. right arrow decrease the volume and left increased it I think but who
cares.
It does actually change the volume on the fly as well.

Thanks again for your help.

 Hello friends,

I have an HP laptop and the volume control is on a touch sensitive pad
above the keybord which is a bit tricky but not impossible.
Is there a way within JAWS that you can control the volume on the fly
or another work around to avoid the touchpad to control the volume on
the fly, without having to use the system tray shortcut that anyone
 has found?

 Many thanks in anticipation,

When you open the contact list, you are most likely placed in the search
field. Press shift+tab one time and it will say Search by. The two choices
are Name only and more columns. If more columns is checked, you won't see
any names in the list. So make sure that name only is checked by selecting
it using the arrow keys.. Then you can tab twice to get to the list.

One way to do this is to press the alt key followed by the number 1 twice

The contact form will open and tab through to verify the information or add

says, jaws, u. It says jaws u quite frequently now instead of jaws for

[JAWS-Users] resources for your child-Re: Most commonly used programs

2012-08-07 Thread John R. Vaughn

Ruchi ,
The jaws help system lists programs that work with Jaws as well as tips on
using the program. Go into the jaws interface (insert key plus letter j).
The press alt key plus h for help and explore the various training materials
in this menu.
In addition, I would talk to your child's vision teacher and see if that
person has assistive technology resources that you can meet with as needed.
Also, your state may have a state department that deals with instructional
materials for children with a disability.
And finally, there are qualified blind teachers/trainers out there that
offer on line training that you can talk to the vision teacher/special
education director about and try and get the school system to fund such
training. No doubt sighted kids are being trained how to use various
programs, and if the school does not have the resource to teach your child,
then ask why the school cannot provide your child with the needed resources.
The law requires the school system to provide your child with the needed
resources.

PowerPoint at school along with the other programs made specifically for
the blind. But they have computer training at school till grade 8, and I
am not sure how many of those he may be able to use? Next semester they
have publisher, then coreldraw. If there are other accessible programs, I

[JAWS-Users] Help from this list-RE: resources for your child-Re: Most commonly used programs

2012-08-07 Thread John R Vaughn
Ruchi For starters, you might try the Freedom Scientific web
site and look at paid and free web based tutorials dealing with a range of
programs and capabilities like using the script utility which might enable
you to do some script writing for your son. Here is the direct link:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/training/Paid-Webinars.asp
I also understand that there is a list serve for screen reader users and
script writing. May be that someone on the list will share that info with
you.
I suspect that some folks on this list who are trainers might be a resource
as well in the event you solicit input from this list for possible on line
web training options for you and your son.
Also, some of the international users on this list might also be able to
chime in with any other ideas as I know in the UK there are some excellent
training being done in that country by the Royal National Institute for the
Blind. And now that you have advised us that you live in India, some other
users on this list from India might be able to steer you in other
directions.
Also, there are a number of lists around that you might come across that
others might steer you in the direction of for training and other resources.
Your son is very fortunate to have you as an advocate and to ensure that he
has the technology. I applaud you and hope others on this list can chime in
with any other specific suggestions.
I am now retired from the assistive technology arena and rehab services, and
so not as up to date with international options.
If I can think of anything else, I will certainly let you know.

Thanks John for your very valuable inputs. We are using a lot of Assistive
technology, almost all that is available for the blind. We use products from
aph and Marvelsoft and hentermath. We use devices from humanware, Plextalk.
We also use daisy books from bookshare and audible books from audible on
these devices. He plays a lot of interactive fiction and jim kitchens and
VIP game zone games.

Also, will check the jaws interface for software that are compatible with
jaws. But I also notice that scripts get written to make more and more
products available to the blind- are there any ready reckoner guides for the
same.

I live in India, and Assistive technology experts are not too many here.
There are a few but with not all the tools. In fact, since my son is not
using Braille yet, the challenge becomes a little bigger. Most other kids
here use Braille instructional materials.

I had been looking for word prediction software for him, but found none. In
fact, the local language support here is too weak. I also tried to look for
creative writing tools and mind mapping tools but nothing is available.
Would you know of any resources.

I will be only too overjoyed to find some online training resources. Since I
am from the engineering background, I will be able to take it up myself and
be in a better position to serve my son. If you could guide me onto that, it
would be great.

Once again, thanks for taking time off to reply in such detail.

Hi folks, I am using Jaws 13 on a Windows 7 computer. I need to raise the
pitch for all voices to hear more clearly. I've looked under Help and in the
Settings center, but haven't found what I need.

Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks very much! Vicky

Re: [JAWS-Users] Trapeze Booking Software

2012-03-09 Thread John R Vaughn
Jerry, to follow up on your question, the usual test is reasonable
accommodation and the reasonable accommodation to mitigate the problem.
That said, logically, any company covered by federal and state law for
making the work place accessible, when purchasing software and hardware
should write into the purchase specifications that it must be accesseble.
However, our federal government is probably one of the largest offenders of
not purchasing software and hardware that is accessible. And the federal
government is the responsibility of the President and Congress.
As I noted, the only thing we can do is work with the prospective employer
to see if scripts can be written to work around problems. And I think many
employers are fully supportive of this to retain or get a good employee.
Although assistive technology like Jaws has helped the blind, every time we
turn around, something that was accessible is no longer accessible because
of some change in software or hardware.
And unfortunately, we all must master our access technology like Jaws
because sometimes we can come up with solutions that are already within the
capability of jaws.
Good luck to all who are still of working age. And thanks to all who are
working to make the promise of technology a reality.

Unless VR can find a jaws or Window Eyes script writer who could come
up with scripts or set files to make the software accessible, the
client will not be considered for the job position. VR has been
working with Comcast here in the Atlanta Metro area for well over 2
years to develop scripts that will work with their Cable software
without success yet. Comcast of Atlanta has been able to higher Zoom

[JAWS-Users] Seeking solution to use inaccessible A.A.A. site with JFW13

2012-03-08 Thread John R Vaughn
Prateek, I am a AAA member and am able to log into my account and access
travel guides, reservations etc.
I am using latest build of Jaws 13, Windows 7 and IE 9.
I note that you cannot navigate the page by headings but other navigation
key strokes seem to work including edit fields etc.
So do not know your issue.
Below is the results of my doing a jaws key plus F1 to get jaws info and
help on the web page you have provided as a link.
John
This page contains 5 links.
There is 1 frame.
The address of the current page is
http://www.aaa.com/aaa/sem/sem.htm?redirectto=http://www.aaa.com/?area=JoinS
EM2skin=JoinSEM

This is an HTML or PDF document.
You can use the standard JAWS reading commands or Navigation Quick Keys to
navigate and read this document. JAWS can also
display lists of certain elements on this page. For example, you can press
INSERT+F7 for a list of links, INSERT+F6 for a list of headings, or
INSERT+F5
for a list of form fields. In addition, if you hold down CTRL+INSERT while
pressing a Navigation Quick Key, JAWS displays a list of all elements of
that
type on the page.

By default, Auto Forms Mode is on. This means that when you navigate to an
edit field, JAWS automatically turns on Forms Mode so that you can
immediately
type text in the edit field. Forms Mode will turn off when you exit the edit
field.
If you turn off the Auto Forms Mode option, using the Quick Settings dialog
box (INSERT+V), you must now press ENTER to manually trigger Forms Mode
before
you can type in the edit field. Press ESC or NUMPAD PLUS to manually exit
Forms Mode.

You can create PlaceMarkers to help you bookmark important locations on the
page for easy reference. Press CTRL+Windows+K to create a temporary
PlaceMarker
that
you can return to by pressing the Navigation Quick Key K. To create a
permanent PlaceMarker at your current location, press CTRL+SHIFT+K to open
the PlaceMarker
dialog.

You can assign custom labels to almost any element on the page. To assign a
custom label to a link, image, button, or other element on the page, move to
it and press CTRL+INSERT+TAB. Alternatively, you can press INSERT+F2 and
choose Custom Label.

If a Web page supports a Web feed, JAWS will announce, RSS Feeds
available. A Web feed is a way to subscribe to your favorite Web sites and
receive updated content. This content can consist of headlines, articles,
podcasts, summaries, and so on. Internet Explorer 7 or later constantly
scans the Web pages that you visit to see if they support Web feeds.

To add a feed in Internet Explorer 7, press ALT+J to open the Feeds context
menu. Select the feed that you want and press ENTER.
To add a feed in Internet Explorer 8 or later, select Feed Discovery from
the Tools menu to open a context menu containing feeds and web slices for
the
current page.
Select the feed that you want and press ENTER.
Next, select the Plus button subscribe to this feed link, or the
Subscribe to this feed link. Finally, choose Subscribe.

To view a list of feeds, press CTRL+J, and use the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to
navigate the Feeds list.

For more details on these features, refer to the JAWS Help system. You can
also press INSERT+H to view a complete list of JAWS hot keys for HTML or PDF
documents.

2012-03-08 Thread John R Vaughn
Charlene, As a former assistive technology trainer in Florida and state VR
director in Virginia, You might call Freedom Scientific and ask them that
question. I would also contact the local state VR agency for their help in
testing the software or help in making the software accessible if it is not.
I also suspect that the local transit company receives federal funds and
must make the job accessible to you, a possible employee.
In my training consulting job, I have gone into possible employment sites
with VR clients and been allowed to either get a copy of the software to try
or put jaws on one of the business's computer to take the software for a
test drive. I am not suggesting you need to make a lot of noise at this
point in time, but pursue your own interest with the available resources
including the screen reader vender and state resources. This is particularly
true if you meet the qualifications for the job.
You might also want to check with the company's that make other screen
readers to see if there is any one of these that is accessible with the
product.
Hopefully, the software will work either out of the box or with some
scripting. And Jaws is a powerful program with all the new capabilities of
this product I have used since 1990.
Good luck on the job interview.

[JAWS-Users] outlook 2010 not automatically reading message after deleting previous message

Am I using the wrong type of delete key?

Al, when the message is opened, the delete key alone or with the shift key
do nothing.
So the control key with letter D is the only thing that works to delete the

Hello John,

There is an option that can be set to tell Outlook to open the next item
when one is deleted. When in the list of a folder use Alt+F followed by
Alt+T to move into the Outlook options. Use down arrow key in the list
Alt+of
options to move to the Mail options. Use shift+tab three times to get to
the combo box that controls what Outlook does when you delete an open
message. Use down arrow key until you get to the choice that tells Outlook
to open the next item. Tab to the OK button and use spacebar. If your JAWS
setting is set to read messages automatically, the next message in the list
should open and JAWS should start reading it after you use CTRL+D in an open
message to delete it.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using JAWS and buying a new computer

2012-02-15 Thread John R Vaughn
Kim, I just purchased a new laptop as I want something portable so I can
travel with the computer. This time, I went more top end and bought 8 gigs
of memory, an Intel I 5 2430 processor (quad processor with turbo boost) and
a 7200 rpm hard drive. I am using office 2010 and windows 7 home premium.
I wanted something that would not get bogged down when working with Word(a
memory hog) and outlook and the internet. I can have numerous documents,
web pages and excel all opened and no slowdown. I am a 22 year user of jaws
and have never had a computer like this and after two months, have not
locked it up.
I agree with the one suggestion that you consider whether you need the
ability to travel with the computer and if not, the desk top might be fine
as they are usually cheaper for the same capability as a laptop. That said,
I have another 15 inch laptop that I have 4 USB ports on and I plug a
keyboard into the computer alone with a scanner and remote hard drive and
printer so that it works like a desktop but I could pick it up and travel
with it. This laptop however weighs 6 pounds versus 3 pounds for my newest
laptop with a 13 inch screen.
Good luck and have fun getting the right computer. If you take second best,
you will not enjoy the experience. And I am the voice of experience talking
about that aspect of the issue.

Hi everyone:

I'm starting a new medical transcription job and finding myself in need of a
new computer. I will be running a transcription platform, which handles
downloading and playing of audio plus the word processing part of
transcription of that same audio. The minimum requirements are for a core 2
duo processor with 3 gigs of ram 32 bit, or 4 gigs with 64 bit. I realize
running jaws ups these requirements somewhat if I don't want to have lags
and sluggishness.

Can I get any suggestions for just how much processor speed and ram I should
spring for? Should I just go all out and get as much power and memory as I
can afford? Is anybody using JAWS with a solid state drive, and what's the
performance there like? Any configurations I should avoid? Should I go
desktop or laptop?

I have JAWS 13 and will be using the Windows 7 home version.

Thanks in advance and thanks for having me on the list.

In outlook 2010 you have to view some of the messages in internet explorer

That is my problem. You use alt-h plus a plus v to do this. But that

In outlook 2010 you have to view some of the messages in internet explorer
in order that they display correctly. There is no other way to read them.

That is my problem. You use alt-h plus a plus v to do this. But that
command is not working anymore.

A little confused here, are you trying to access your mail thru Outlook, or
logging directly into the mail server from the internet.
Normally, Internet Explorer doesn't come into play if you are using an
e-mail client such as Microsoft Outlook.

Hi all

I don't know if this is a jaws issue or simply something else so if this is
off topic, please accept my apologies.

Using Jaws 13 on an xp machine with office 2010.

For some time now, I am unable for some reason to view my outlook messages
in internet explorer as usual. When I press alt.h plus 8a plus v after a
delay I am simply back in the main message and windows explorer does not
open as usual. When I examine the screen with the jaws cursur, there is a
message saying that the view is not available. I can't understand this at
all because I did not change anything.

Can anyone help?

As this key stroke is the Freedom scientific solution to this problem, I
would E mail support at FS.
Sounds like you are losing focus if while reading the message in internet
explorer after you use this shift plus insert and letter W key combination.
When you get bounced back into the actual message in the outlook program,
can you alt tab back over to the browser window with the message being
accessed through the internet explorer?
Good luck.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 and Jas 13

2012-02-04 Thread John R Vaughn
Here is a message I sent out when I first was learning jaws with windows 7.
An updated resource would be the freedom scientific web page under training
for some free webinars including on a basic free download for jaws and
windows 7at
http://www.freedomscientific.com/training/Free-Webinars.asp#FreeArchive.

Also look around on the free webinar page as well as the paid webinars, some
which are excellent for learning office 2007 and 2010 among others.
And finally, there is the jaws help system.
John in sunny Florida
List, many of you have written me off list to get some of the tutorials and
resources for using windows 7.
to facilitate this and not have messages undelivered and returned to me
because of attachment size issues with some E mail providers, below are
links to source documents to help you transition to windows 7 john

A good starting point on your computer is to press the windows key and type
in getting Started and press enter. you will get into the Windows 7 help
system. Look around this web page interface. and enter on the link to get
you into the web site on line.
here are resources that have helped me in the past 8 months:
1. M S windows training resource that is aimed at accessibility and
transitioning to windows 7 and contains other links of help :

http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/windows7/transition.aspx

2. Here are links to VIP training materials on using the windows explorer
and task bar.

http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Taskbar-7-Guide.html
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Windows-Explorer-7-Guide.html

3. blind cool tech web site has some audio/spoken tutorials that might be
helpful, so on this page simply do a search with the jaws search feature
using the search item windows 7 and you can work your way through this
extensive list of audio tutorials on a variety of topics. here is their web
link:
http://blindcooltech.com/

4. blind geek zone web site has some audio tutorials and a windows 7 list
serve for the blind:
http://blind-geek-zone.net/ some

5. I have about completed reading a book (11 CD) from a book written in the
UK by Dr. Sarah Morley Wilkins entitled Windows 7 and Vista Explained: A
Guide for Blind and Partially Sighted Users (WINDOWS7)
This is distributed in the USA by the National Braille Press. This is a
good systematic tutorial for those who learn best this way. As a former
trainer of jaws and Assistive technology, this fits my personality but it is
not for everyone. the book is available in 5 formats including Braille.

http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/WINDOWS7.html

Award-winning author Dr. Sarah Morley Wilkins has teamed up with Steve
Griffiths in this new step-by-step guide on Microsoft Windows 7 and Vista,
written specifically for blind users. The fifth book in the Windows
Explained series from the Royal National Institute for the Blind, this
tutorial starts with the basics and guides users through topics such as file
management, troubleshooting, and using the Internet. Written from a
non-visual perspective, this guide will also benefit adaptive technology
trainers and people supporting users with sight loss. By special arrangement
with RNIB, NBP is offering the full range of formats (with American braille)
to customers in the United States and Canada only.

For some inexplicable reason, since yesterday, when I try to display

explorer. This worked perfectly until yesterday and I did not do anything

Re: [JAWS-Users] researchit again

2012-01-25 Thread John R Vaughn

Dan, research it might not be for you. On the otherhand, there is a lot of
convenient ways to get specific info at your finger tip. So in the jaws
help system under topics, there is a chapter on research it. Here is the
first book from that topic in the event you want to pursue this further.

John

Research It

For a quick overview, see Research It On the Fly

or continue reading the following introduction.

Research It is a versatile tool that provides quick access to data while
also making it easy to return to your primary task. It uses what is known as
a lookup source and the Results Viewer to find information, whether it is
the meaning of a word, your local weather forecast, top news stories, sports
scores, directions to and information about a local business, and more.
Using just a few keystrokes, you can launch Research It from any application
on your computer. The following describes keystrokes, available lookup
sources, and various ways to launch and use Research It.

Research It On the Fly

To quickly lookup an item of interest using Research It, do the following:

1. Press INSERT+SPACEBAR, R.
The Research It dialog box appears with focus in the Word or Phrase edit
combo box.
2. Do one of the following:

* Type a word, phrase, date, tracking number, or other item into the
edit combo box, press TAB, and then select a lookup source from the list.
* Select an item from the edit combo box history list, press TAB, and
then select a lookup source from the list.
* Press TAB to jump directly to the Lookup Source list, and then
select a lookup source. (This option is useful when using a news lookup
source.)

3. Press ENTER.
After a few seconds, the JAWS Results Viewer window opens and displays the
search results.

Note: For specific examples describing how to enter search parameters, refer

Keystrokes

The following briefly describes the available Research It keystrokes. Note
that if JAWS is configured for Laptop Layout mode, substitute CAPS LOCK for
the INSERT key.

* INSERT+SPACEBAR, R: Opens the Research It dialog box, where you can
then type a word or expression of interest, and then select a lookup source
to perform your search. This can be a zip code, or city and state, or city
and country that can be used with the Weather lookup tool to read a
forecast, or a date that is used to view baseball or football schedules and
scores, or a word to use with the Wikipedia search query to view its meaning
or description. This convenient, layered keystroke provides the most
efficient way to search for a term. Note: When using this keystroke, press
and release INSERT+SPACEBAR, and then press R.
* INSERT+WINDOWS Key+R: Launches Research It and uses the primary
lookup source to directly show results in the Results Viewer. This keystroke
bypasses the Research It dialog box.

By default, Wiktionary is the primary lookup source. This means that while
the cursor is on a word in a document or Web page, you can press this
keystroke and quickly lookup the Wiktionary description for that word. You
can always change the primary lookup source at any time using the Options

The materials they send you to have to help you remember what you are taught

I will spend the $30 each for the webinar training for each specific program
including word, excel and outlook. I know this will save me a lot of time.

[JAWS-Users] FS training webinars

2011-11-19 Thread John R Vaughn
Fred, I am talking about the one's Al noted in his last message.
There is a free intro webinar for office 2010 this Tuesday for an hour at 12
noon. Also, you can go to the download page for the training area and
download audio and text documents with training material for the free
webinars. I am going to pay roughly $30 for the Outlook 2010 webinar as you
can follow along during the class and or simply use the downloaded materials
with or without being at a specific date for training. There is a good
schedule of upcoming webinars.

Thank you for this item. I would not have easily found it and I already
spent more time on it than I should have.
I think I am going to get the jaws office outlook tutorial and approach all
of this office 2010 systematically. This program is so different from
Office 2003 that I really need to start from scratch.
So hopefully an old dog can learn new tricks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS-Users] Jaws 13 update and MS Outlook 2010

2011-11-18 Thread John R Vaughn
Mark and David, I was having a similar problem reading certain E mail
messages in outlook 2010 with Jaws 13 and I talked to FS and they gave me a
solution for reading those web pages that do not read. The solution is to
have the E mail read in the web browser and the command is
Shift plus insert and the letter W as in william. You go to the web page
and read the message and it works fine.
This may not be the solution to your problem but was for me and will be for
others using outlook 2010 and jaws 13.

Hi All,

Trying to switch from XP Home to 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium with a new
version of JAWS, a different e-mail client , synth, and new keyboard at the
same time has totally fried my brain and I need some help please with
something that should be simple.

In Windows Live Mail 2011 and JAWS 12 with Eloquence, JAWS is speaking
brackets, parentheses, etc. in the names of lists that appear in the subject
field and, at least for now, I'd like to hear only the names without the
extraneous symbols being spoken.

For example, JAWS says
left bracket JAWS dash users right bracket in the subject field for this
list. For now, only hearing

JAWS Users

would make me very happy. I think I have Advanced Verbosity set, but I
can't remember if brackets, parentheses are included in punctuation or not.
I know I used to be able to use the JAWS dictionary to have list names not
speak at all, but I want to see how it goes hearing them minus the
extraneous stuff. Do I still do it with the JAWS dictionary or is there
some setting somewhere to accomplish it? JAWS 10 on the XP home is saying
it the way I prefer

Any help would be appreciated.

1. While in your in box, hold down the insert key and press the letter v

2. you are in the quick settings tree view. down arrow through the various

enter on it to check or uncheck an item.

This time I am considering buying direct and selecting components.
I use jaws V12, and do not store video or pictures but do a lot with the
internet, documents, spread sheets and outlook for E-mail.
1. Does jaws work better with a dedicated video card as it did years ago
when that was the option of choice.
2. Do the intel processors with turbo boost improve the performance of jaws
3. Does moving to a faster hard drive improve the performance of jaws.
4. With windows 7 home premium, does paying up for 8 megs of ram warrant the
additional cost of $$160 to go from 4 megs to 8 megs. Can purchase 2 megs
of additional for $80?

of a previously saved item i.ie. from adobe PDF to text or a word format

Re: [JAWS-Users] Save v Save as

2011-07-26 Thread john R. Vaughn
Rich, remember, when you select either save or save as, you are put into
a dialogue box. within the dialogue box, you can tab through all the
controls or fields that you can change before actually doing the save. Try
it out and after you tab through and see choices, simply press the escape
key and you are out of the dialogue box and nothing is changed. So this
sort of lets you take a test drive from within this particular dialogue
box.
But when you are within the dialogue box, if you are not sure what you can
do from within a control, use jaws help (jaws key plus F1 key) to let jaws
give you some help about the control.

Try the information below to see if this will do what you are
wanting to
accomplish.

The F8 key in Word is a Toggle. You press the F8 key a different
number of
times to select different amounts of text.
Pressing the F8 key 1 time turns extended selection mode on. In
this mode
you can arrow up or down to select text line by line.
Pressing the F8 key 2 times will copy the highlighted word.
Pressing the F8 key 3 times will copy the sentence the cursor is
in.
Pressing the F8 key 4 times will copy the paragraph the cursor is
in.
Pressing the F8 key 5 times will copy the document.

Hope this has helped. Take care.

Was surfing the net this morning and when I reached a site, I was

When this has happened before, I simply hit Escape, and could again arrow in

and out of the search box. Not today. Today, Jaws said: Virtual PC cursor
(which I have never heard before), and once I hit Escape, that was it. Jaws
refused to read out any content on the site, I could not refresh the page or

reload it, if I tabbed into the address bar and went to another page, if it
had a Search box, same thing happened. How can I turn off this Virtual PC
Cursor? If I shut down Explorer and reopened it, the same problem occurred.
A full reboot seemed to get things back to normal, until I tried the
YahooGroups home page, which immediately brought back the Virtual PC Cursor

forms boxes without clicking Enter to activate forms mode. Any help would be

greatly appreciated, thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop doesn't show on AC power

You could have a bad power cord or it is not properly attached. Or the
battery could be really old or damaged and needs to be replaced. thirdly,
the computer has a problem charging and that is where the problem lies. So
I would eliminate possible problems.
I would suggest you see if the power cord is working.
1. shut down the computer.
2. take the battery out of the computer.
3. be sure your power cord is properly attached to the computer and the wall
outlet and that this wall outlet works. also be sure any other connections
in the power cord are attached.
4. turn on your computer now and if it boots up then you know your power
cord is working and you have another problem.
good luck.

Re: [JAWS-Users] IE 8 and jaws 11 lockup?

2010-09-02 Thread john R. Vaughn
Dale,
Which version of MS windows are you using? I have minimal problems on my
laptop running windows 7 and IE 8 versus the lockups with IE 8 and windows
vista. I have not figured out what is happening when a lock up occurs but
usually have just thought my fingers were going to fast and that locked up
the computer. But if so, seems like the lock up problem would be similar on
both systems.
But again, many more problems with vista and IE8. I will probably upgrade
the vista system as that computer is only 1 years old.
In any event, I always try to avoid just turning the computer off as a
remedy but rather try and get the system to shutdown normally. As to a
remedy, if after numerous alt plus F4 commands I do not get speech to come
back and or I try reloading the jaws program, I go to the shutdown command
to let the system shutdown so I can reboot the system. No doubt you will
have no speech doing this. On vista that command sequence is:
1. windows key plus letter M to minimize to the desk top.
2. windows key to bring up search dialogue box.
3. right arrow twice to get placed on the shutdown command and press enter.
On windows 7 system.
1. windows key plus letter M to go to desktop.
2. windows key to bring up search box on the start menue.
3. right arrow only once and press enter to shutdown the computer.
I sure think it is best when you lose speech after some sort of lock up to
try and get the computer to shut down normally so you can reboot the system,
especially on the windows vista computer.
And of course you can always try the alt plus control alt keys and delete
key to bring up the task manager which sometimes brings back speech.
Good luck

Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessing the toolbar

2010-08-15 Thread john R. Vaughn
Jose, I do not know about this program but, I am assuming that this is not a
program that Jaws has some scripts developed for. you can check this by
using insert key plus letter Q to see if you hear jaws say default, then
there are no jaws scripts. If jaws announces the name of the program, then
that would mean jaws has some scripts it is using for the program and so you
can check jaws help for the program and helpful hints or keyboard shortcuts.
Usually if there is a tool bar, the jaws command insert key plus F8 might
invoke a tool bar.But you may still be able to use the program using the
jaws cursor to help you find out about the program and if there might be
tool bars or a menue bar and short cut keys.
I would use the jaws cursor and look around the top of the page to see if
you have some tool bar or menue bar at the top of the page.
You could try using the alt key to see if it brings up a menue bar so you
can arrow around and see if there are some keyboard commands to invoke
actions.
You might find the programs help file and read it using the jaws cursor.
Hope these ideas might help you try and figure this all out.
good luck.

2010-08-15 Thread John R. Vaughn
Jose, that is why I suggest you try using the jaws cursor to check around
the top of the page to see if you might find some tool or menue bars. did
you simply try using the alt key to see if it brings up a menue bar? Or
insert F8 or just F8 key to see if it bring up a tool bar.

good luck
John

This tool is for Microsoft Word! It is a plug-in for it! Therefore I
cannot view it in the start menu or anything like that! No their is no
scripts for this program!

Jose, I do not know about this program but, I am assuming that

this is not a

program that Jaws has some scripts developed for. you can check

this by

using insert key plus letter Q to see if you hear jaws say

default, then

there are no jaws scripts. If jaws announces the name of the

program, then

that would mean jaws has some scripts it is using for the program

and so you

can check jaws help for the program and helpful hints or keyboard

shortcuts.

Usually if there is a tool bar, the jaws command insert key plus

F8 might

invoke a tool bar.But you may still be able to use the program

using the

jaws cursor to help you find out about the program and if there

might be

tool bars or a menue bar and short cut keys.
I would use the jaws cursor and look around the top of the page

to see if

you have some tool bar or menue bar at the top of the page.
You could try using the alt key to see if it brings up a menue

bar so you

can arrow around and see if there are some keyboard commands to

invoke

actions.
You might find the programs help file and read it using the jaws

cursor.

Hope these ideas might help you try and figure this all out.
good luck.
