I wrote down to press Jaws key plus windows key plus F4 and this turns off Jaws. And if I press these keys again, they act as a toggle. Am I supposed to press them simultaneously? When I press them the first time, I can see with my hugely magnified Magic that the screen changes. But I haven't gotten Jaws to restart with those keys or with any others. I am having to resort to turning the computer off with the button and then turning it on again. Even though I can see that I've moved to the screen that says, "Shut Down", the key strokes don't work. But, after I press the button, just before the screen changes, Jaws says something, but then the computer shuts down. I have a 64 bit windows 7 computer. I'd sell my soul for a key stroke that would just get Jaws working again without having to shut down the computer and wait for it to start and load. Hi Jim, The steps below are for Adobe XI / 11: Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the consequences of unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to say. Open Adobe from your desktop shortcut or start menu then, proceed with the steps below. 1. Go into preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view. If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security." Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck but, optional: Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked. Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked. Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other changes first. 2. Launch the Edit menu, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu and open it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next" in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make sure it is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay button & press enter to save your changes & close. If you are running AdobeX / 10, let me know & I'll send those steps as well. HTH Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] I need shortcut keys for 4 versions of jaws?
Hi Betsy, If something happens to your running version of Jaws and you lose speech, then having a hot-key for an earlier version allows you to easily reestablish a possible loss of the hot-key for the troubled version. This situation has happened to me many times, plus a number of other difficulties which might be able to be fixed by being able to look at the problem version quickly. Using a headset or external speaker with the Compaq doesn't remove the studdering and the sound quality still doesn't match that of the Toshiba. Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Dictionary.com
Hi, This web site acts in a strange way, but you can easily navigate with a tab and a few down arrows. The biggest problem was getting stuck in the edit field, but some experimenting solved this. I am using jaws 10 and hit enter on the desktop dictionary.com icon. This immediately put me into forms mode. I entered a word and tabbed to the search button. I then arrowed down 4 or 5 times, and I then hit the h for heading. This took me to the definitions etc. I could easily navigate around with the arrow keys. This site certainly has much information. Though it seems compatible at first, it has a couple of problems. The one that bothers me most is how to find the dictionary entreys. I enter the word and then submit it. If I want the thesaurus entry I hit that. The thesaurus entries are easier to find than the dictionary ones. My question is: Is there a key combination to find the dictionary entries? I have to go through the entire listing line by line to find it, and sometimes even that doesn't work. So, I call on sighted help, if it's around. Any suggestions? Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] Muting JFW
Hi, I believe in Jaws 9 and above you can do an Insert+V and hit the end key and hit the spacebar to off. To turn Jaws on again, just do an insert+V and hit the End Key and the spacebar to on. Hi, This Web site offers hundreds of musical selections from various catagories. The sound is quite good and it is in stereo. It is like a juke box in your computer. The basic menus are very well layed out. The audio player is self contained. http://www.theradio.com/genres.cfm Roger - Original Message - From: aiden gardiner aiden.gardiner@googlemail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, December 15, 2008 6:56 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] the radio dot com What exactly is so good about this little site? i'm not bashing it, having not visitted it, i'm just curious is all. Re: [JAWS-Users] I need help with avast please?
Hi Kimber, I have been noticing your progress with using the Avast program, and glad you are doing so well with this new challenge. You can make changes to Avast from the System Tray. Enter insert+F11 and arrow to a line reading Avast on access scanner --- and hit the Enter Key. You can arrow up or down to make your choice. If you select program settings it will give you a tree-view of the Avast world. Once you arrow to a function, then use the Tab Key to read the choices. The updating submenu will allow you to both check the virus database and the program updates. To activate either one just hit enter and the updating will proceed. In the tree-view arrow to the line reading update (basic) and reference this choice using the Tab Key. You will find check boxes for making updates automatic or prompted , or manual. The default is already set to automatic for the virus database, but you can also make the program updates automatic. As far as doing system virus scans, I think many people virus scan their system to death. Remember that Avast moniters all incoming and outgoing messages and new files for viruses. System scans are very resource intensive. Avast does not care what version of Jaws you are using. I am running both the free and pro version of Avast on two different XP machines. Automatic scheduling of scans can only be done with the pro version of the program. I hope I have helped you some, but please continue to ask for further information. Re: [JAWS-Users] I need help with avast please?
Hi Kimber, The free version is always monitering your data, but is not regularly performing a system scan. You must invoke a system scan manually, either from the system tray or the desktop. If you open up the program from the desktop you will find check boxes for setting the scope of your scan. Be assured that when new data is introduced to your system, Avast will check it out for viruses and spyware. If your computer house is completely locked up and it contains no viruses, then doing a system scan in your house does nothing but take up resources. One of the reasons for a system scan is to check for viruses which slipped in while you were surfing the internet. The real time scanning isn't perfect, so system scans occasionly are advisable. Hi Kimber, My experiences with Avast scans is that you have to use the Jaws Cursor to read the information during the scan. This isn't too hard to do, it just takes a little practice. You can access the scan statistics from the scan report from the desktop or the system tray. Hi Kimber, Just remember that the most important thing about the antivirus game is keeping viruses out of your computer. Avast is the guard at the door. If Avast encounters a virus, it makes a siren soundand warning message. It is comforting to know that every e-mail coming into your system is frisked for a virus. Hi Kimber, I only had an e-mail with a virus one time. Avast gives you choices how to deal with it. One choice always is to delete it and another choice is to put it in the chest (vault), or quarantine it. I think it is best to delete it instead of dancing with it another time. Hi, I understand your frustration. To help clean-up the screen make sure that Inline frames are turned off, and maybe turn off flash content. More restrictive searches really can also help. I had planned to contribute to the JAWS wiki but after spending fifteen minutes and finding nothing, I decided that a well-written contribution belonged elsewhere! And on web forums, it is rare to see a heading at all. In blogs, you see headings only if the blogger is a screen reader user, and even then not all the time. I guess some of the readers have more patience than I do. Typing N to navigate to the next non-link text, usually takes me to an ad. Hi Maria, You do not have to uninstall the XP Narrator. Narrator is a direct exec module. The reference for this is on the jaws Users Mailing List Home Page, and is under the Programs Page and the Windows Heading, and go to number 6. The new program belongs under the System Folder rather than the System32 Folder which contains the old XP Narrator program. Hi Bryan, I am using both the free and paid versions of Avast. I have the automatic program update check box checked as aposed to being prompted or set to the manual option. You can set scan regions, do updates, etc. using the menus and submenus that are present when you use the application key. You can also use insert-F11 and use down arrow to the AVAST scanner icon that usually tells you that six out of seven scanners are active (or something like that). use tab key to the right mouse button click and press enter. You will find most menus and submenus listed. Program settings, updates, etc. AVAST checks for definition updates every four hours automatically. The default setting for program updates is to let you know when one is available, but the definition updates are done automatically. . You can update manually through the updates menu or through the updates tab of the program settings dialog, but it is done automatically every four hours by the program. In my opinion, running full system scans doesn't need to be done often. If you have the available scanners in AVAST automatically protecting the system then the system is probably safe. you can also use the application key in Windows Explorer when focus is on a file that you downloaded (or on a folder when checking more than one file) and choose the scan option from the context menu. Although you can't use the AVAST program to schedule an automatic scan, you can set up a scheduled task in both XP and Vista. In the task manager you can specify the frequency and time for the scan. The executable used by AVAST is ASHQUICK.EXE. When setting up the scheduled task you can browse to that file in the AVAST folder. The AVAST folder is under the ALWIL Software folder, which is under Program Files on the hard drive. After putting ASHQUICK.EXE as the task name you should use a space and then put in the target of the scan, such as c: for the whole drive or c:\temp for a single folder. Vista and XP are somewhat different in the way you use the task scheduler, so if I can assist any more then feel free to contact me off list. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Jaws With Avast
HiBryan, You are correct, I was! referring to the program settings item. I should have been clearerabout this. I have not experimented with the Report File settings checkboxes, but it isn't really that critical. I am pleased with the functioning of Avast. I have also used AVG 7.5 Free before it was migrated to 8.0. Years ago I used Norton Antivirus and found it a nightmare of complexity especially as it related to Jaws. If so, the section is where you tell the program whether or not you want reports created. The reports are kept in c:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\Report and include such reports as Resident Protection.TXT and Simple User Interface.TXT. All of the reports are in text files. The most current report information is found at the bottom of the files. I am not using the paid version of the program but I am quite sure it has its own scan scheduler that can be used. however, the free version can be set up with the Windows Task Scheduler to scan on specific days and at specific times. Re: [JAWS-Users] Avast.
Hi Sue, My experience with Avast is is that every time you start the program the scan is set to 50 percent (standard). My opinion is that people do scans more than is necessary. Remember that Avast is constantly monitering your data and software for viruses. I really think Avast is a very Jaws friendly program and is quite thorough in its anti virus function. When scanning with Avast, is the thorough scan button highlighted by default does anyone know? I'm just wondering because after opening Avast, I check the local hard disks check box then press alt A to start the scan. I know that you can do a quick, standard and thorough scan and I'm just wondering if the thorough scan button is highlighted so that the thorough scan is performed each time you do a scan. I hope this makes sense to someone as I've not explained myself very well. Thanks. Sue. Thanks again Mike Barbara wrote: Hi Faisal, Try the steps below. do the following two things to make Avast more accessible. Configuring Avast to not use the skins for the simple user interface: 1. Start Avast. 2. Wait for the memory test to be completed, then close the web page that appears. You should now land on a dummy check box. 3. Press the applications key to open a context menu, down arrow to settings and press enter. The Programme Settings dialogue box appears, with the categories tree gaining focus. 4. Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box checked. Press space to uncheck it. 5. Tab to ok and press enter. You'll land back on the dummy check box. 6. Close and restart Avast. You should now be able to tab through the controls in this programme. Configuring JAWS to read lists in Avast: 1. Make sure that you're focused on the Avast Simple User Interface. 2. Press JAWS key 6 to open Configuration Manager. 3. Press enter to accept the New Configuration File dialogue box. 4. Press alt s to open the set options menu, then press a. The advanced Options dialogue box appears. 5. Shift tab till you hear, Rely on MSAA for List Views check box not checked. Press space to check it. 6. Press enter to activate the ok button. 7. Either press control s to save your configuration file immediately, or press alt F4, pressing enter to activate the yes button on the confirm dialogue box. By doing these steps, you'll resolve an issue on some machines whereby JAWS stops speaking when focused on any of the lists in Avast. for a complete scan, check all local disks, check archives, move the slider to 100% (thorough scan), and click start. Hope that helps. The link below will provide you with more information. http://www.accessible-devices.com/AvastProgram.html Also, once the scan has started turn on your Jaws cursor or route Jaws cursor to PC cursor with Jaws key + minus key on num pad, then press your home or control + home keys, then arrow down and you will run across something that tells you what percentage of scan has been completed. When you follow the above path and the AdAware folder is opened then paste the DEFS.REF file into the folder. Answer yes when you are asked if you want to overwrite or replace the existing DEFS,.REF file. You can then close the open folders and open the program to use it. [JAWS-Users] OE and Atachments with AVG
Hi List, AVG Anti-Virus will do that if you have it configured to certify incoming email. When AVG certifies incoming mail, it causes Outlook Express to see the certification as an attachment. If you have AVG, open the Control Center, click on Email Scanner then at the bottom, click on the Properties button. In the Window that opens, click on the Configure button. Uncheck Certify Mail under Check Incoming Mail. Click OK and OK again, close the Control Center. Hi, In Jaws Version 9 the Insert V is now changed. It is now Jaws Options. Do an insert V and type the letter V, you will be in a tree view. Arrow down one line and hit the Spacebar to choose Virtual Cursor, then hit the Enter Key. This will make the copy to clipboard without the formatting data. This should solve your problems.
