Please tell me again, in detail, what to do when Jaws 18 disappears. I wrote
down to press Jaws key plus windows key plus F4 and this turns off Jaws. And
if I press these keys again, they act as a toggle. Am I supposed to press
them simultaneously? When I press them the first time, I can see with my
hugely magnified Magic that the screen changes. But I haven't gotten Jaws to
restart with those keys or with any others. I am having to resort to turning
the computer off with the button and then turning it on again. Even though I
can see that I've moved to the screen that says, "Shut Down", the key
strokes don't work. But, after I press the button, just before the screen
changes, Jaws says something, but then the computer shuts down. I have a 64
bit windows 7 computer. I'd sell my soul for a key stroke that would just
get Jaws working again without having to shut down the computer and wait for
it to start and load.

Interestingly, when I go to my internet favorites in C users under my name,

However, when I bring up internet Explorer 11, the favorites are not listed
alphabetically. Instead, as I noted before, they are listed

I'm puzzled as to how to get the favorites list under c users to be

Hi Jim,

The steps below are for Adobe XI / 11:

Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the

consequences of
unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to say.
Open Adobe from your desktop shortcut or start menu then, proceed with the
steps below.

1. Go into preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow
down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security."
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck
but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.
Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other
changes first.

2. Launch the Edit menu, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu and open
it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make
sure it
is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay button &
press enter to save your changes & close.

If you are running AdobeX / 10, let me know & I'll send those steps as well.

HTH
Take care.

2014-08-26 Thread Roger Levine
Hi listers,
Casper is quite Jaws friendly. I am using Casper 7.0 and I don't have to
use the Jaws cursor. It only needs the Jaws cursor if you want more in
depth backup statistics. I am running Win 7 64-bit. In the past I used
Casper on an XP computer without any problems.

Unless Casper has greatly improved its accessibility recently, JAWS or

   Hi Betsy,
If something happens to your running version of Jaws and you lose speech,
then having a hot-key for an earlier version allows you to easily
reestablish a possible loss of the hot-key for the troubled version. This
situation has happened to me many times, plus a number of other difficulties
which might be able to be fixed by being able to look at the problem version

Sometimes lately when I do a Google search, there are search results
listed, but JAWS skips over them.
It will review my search line, then jump to the links for 1, 2, 3 and so
on at the end of the list of search results.
Pressing H for headings, or U for unvisited links won't get me to the
search results either.
I'm using JAWS 11.
Does anybody know what might cause this?

Tom

[JAWS-Users] Jaws sound quality with different computer brands

2010-02-13 Thread Roger Levine
Hi listers,
I have an older Compaq computer which has poor sound quality and studders. I
also have an older Toshiba computer which has exelant sound quality and no
studdering. The Jaws sound quality is in reference to Eloquence. Both
computers are laptops using XP. I am using a small external speaker with the
Toshiba. Using a headset or external speaker with the Compaq doesn't remove the
studdering and the sound quality still doesn't match that of the Toshiba. The
audio chip on the Compaq uses Conexant audio
and the Toshiba only indicates Audio Codecs under device manager. I am
bringing up this subject because I am planning to purchase a new computer with
Windows 7
and not necessarily a laptop. I would appreciate any recommendations or
information regarding this topic.

Hi Leonard,
You can delete many files at the same time. Hit Altkey + the letter A and
the selected files will be deleted after hitting the delete key. You can
also point to a file and hold down the shift key as you arrow down a list of
files. All the files that were selected will be deleted after hitting the

Hi,
To enter the research it mode you need only press and hold the insert key
and then hit the space bar. You can substitute the Jaws key (caps lock key)
for the insert key The R key can be pressed when you are ready.

This command is a layered or two stage command.

or you will get either Jaws restriction message, or nothing at all. I
have not mastered a solution where it works correctly when pressed every
time. Also I wanted to get the NFL scores for a specific week so I typed
the phrase for example week 9or week 10 but NFL scores seems to always
bring up the upcoming schedule for the current week. Has anybody else
experienced issues like this using research it?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Dictionary.com

2009-06-14 Thread Roger Levine

Hi,
This web site acts in a strange way, but you can easily navigate with a tab
and a few down arrows. The biggest problem was getting stuck in the edit
field, but some experimenting solved this. I am using jaws 10 and hit enter
on the desktop dictionary.com icon. This immediately put me into forms
mode. I entered a word and tabbed to the search button. I then arrowed
down 4 or 5 times, and I then hit the h for heading. This took me to the
definitions etc. I could easily navigate around with the arrow keys. This
site certainly has much information.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using Dictionary.com

Hi Listers:

I've been using a lot of dictionary.com recently. Though it seems
compatible at first, it has a couple of problems. The one that bothers me
most is how to find the dictionary entreys.
I enter the word and then submit it. If I want the thesaurus entry I
hit that. The thesaurus entries are easier to find than the dictionary
ones.

My question is: Is there a key combination to find the dictionary
entries? I have to go through the entire listing line by line to find it,
and sometimes even that doesn't work. So, I call on sighted help, if it's
around. Any suggestions? Thanks. Barbara

  1. Bringing up the Jaws Verbosity Dialog with Jawskey plus V.
  2. Hit the End key to go to the bottom of the list or tree.
  3. You will hear: Synthesizer Speech On. Pressing the spacebar hear

[JAWS-Users] Installing IE 8

2009-03-22 Thread Roger Levine
Hi Listers,
I installed IE8 after I understood it was out of Beta, but the microsoft Web
site still refers to the Beta release as the most current download. While in
IE8 I experienced some sound distortion. The only way I could remove the sound
distortion was to unload jaws and hot-key it back. I am running the latest
version of jaws 10 and XP Pro. I have been using IE7 without any problems I
would appreciate any help on this topic.

[JAWS-Users] Installing IE8

2009-03-22 Thread Roger Levine
Hi Listers,
On an earlier post I indicated a sound distortion problem after installing IE8,
but the problem was a Toshiba virtual sound setting within the system tray. A
little detective work on my part payed off, problem solved.

Is there other way to use the CAPS LOCK mode in laptop settings?
Thank you for any help.

Hi,
It is possible that they are sitting on the group messages by conversation
line

and they see that it is unchecked. It is fairly common to just hit the
enter key, thereby checking it. I have ocationally done that myself, not
thinking.

If view messages by conversation is unchecked and we are still hearing
'collapsed', then that is a false report. I don't find any other way
messages could be 'collapsed' unless view by conversation is, in fact,
checked. Have her: Unload JAWS; reload it; and Press enter, NOT spacebar,
on view messages by conversation, and repeat the process if necessary, to
uncheck it.

Hi all.
I have XP home and 10.0
I am looking for some basic tutorials on how to burn, copy, download,

music.
There seems to be a ton of information and products out there.
I noticed the myriad of programs on the JAWS list.
My sighted wife is a pre novice with tech. information.
It was a laborious task just to copy a CD to another blank disc.

We figured it out using the MP player on our Dell.
I am familiar with terms like copy and paste, but then I hear rip and
burn.
My goal is to be able to get music on to a CD or MP3 then listen to it
on

the proper player, either home system or portable player.
How can I learn the terminology, and skills to do this?
Again, I really need to know the basics.
I know one can download songs, or albums as well as set up files with out
using too much memory.

Thank you for any help.

with it as it relates to Jaws is that some of the functions

Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Media Player

2008-12-10 Thread Roger Levine

Hi,
Make sure to properly close-up WMP before exiting and before opening any MP3
file to play outside of the WMP program. I have had this problem at times.
This might be a shot in the dark, but hopefully it will work.

Hi.
well tried again, set the rip music tab in options.
put the cd back in and ripped my music.
now editing my artist, album and track titles.
not sure why it did not do it the first time.
sorry about that.
well, got it working ownow.
but still got a strange thing, if i open the mp3 from windows explorer, if
i
close alt f 4 the audio track does not stop playing, and the only way, is
to

go into windows media player and go to play, and click on stop.
then the audio track stops.
real weird.
tried looking in the options in windows media player, and also, went to
the

mp3 properties, and set the associated program to windows media player.
real strange.
can any one throw some light on this one?
cheers Marvin.
ps: thanks for all your help on this issue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I need help with avast please?

2008-12-09 Thread Roger Levine

Hi Kimber,
I have been noticing your progress with using the Avast program, and glad
you are doing so well with this new challenge. You can make changes to Avast
from the System Tray. Enter

insert+F11 and arrow to a line reading Avast on access scanner --- and hit
the Enter Key. You can arrow up or down to make your choice. If you select
program settings it will give you a tree-view of the Avast world. Once you
arrow to a function, then use the Tab Key to read the choices. The updating
submenu will allow you to both check the virus database and the program
updates. To activate either one just hit enter and the updating will
proceed. In the tree-view arrow to the line reading update (basic) and
reference this choice using the Tab Key. You will find check boxes for
making updates automatic or prompted , or manual. The default is already set
to automatic for the virus database, but you can also make the program
updates automatic. As far as doing system virus scans, I think many people
virus scan their system to death. Remember that Avast moniters all incoming
and outgoing messages and new files for viruses. System scans are very
resource intensive. Avast does not care what version of Jaws you are using.
I am running both the free and pro version of Avast on two different XP
machines. Automatic scheduling of scans can only be done with the pro
version of the program. I hope I have helped you some, but please continue
to ask for further information. I too am still learning about the Avast
system, and your questions also help in my gaining new knowledge about the
program.

web-page?

now, you should be able to use the applications key, and arrow to
settings and press enter.

Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box
checked. Press spacebar to uncheck it.

now tab ok, press enter.

now, close avast, and re-start the program.

takes place. or you may have just missed the announcement, while you

Re: [JAWS-Users] I need help with avast please?

2008-12-09 Thread Roger Levine

Hi Kimber,
The free version is always monitering your data, but is not regularly
performing a system scan. You must invoke a system scan manually, either
from the system tray or the desktop. If you open up the program from the
desktop you will find check boxes for setting the scope of your scan. Be
assured that when new data is introduced to your system, Avast will check it
out for viruses and spyware. If your computer house is completely locked up
and it contains no viruses, then doing a system scan in your house does
nothing but take up resources. One of the reasons for a system scan is to
check for viruses which slipped in while you were surfing the internet. The
real time scanning isn't perfect, so system scans occasionly are advisable.

Hi Kimber,
My experiences with Avast scans is that you have to use the Jaws Cursor to
read the information during the scan. This isn't too hard to do, it just
takes a little practice. You can access the scan statistics from the scan
report from the desktop or the system tray.

Hi Kimber,
Just remember that the most important thing about the antivirus game is
keeping viruses out of your computer. Avast is the guard at the door. If
Avast encounters a virus, it makes a siren soundand warning message. It is
comforting to know that every e-mail coming into your system is frisked for
a virus.

Hello Kimber;

did you wait until the memory test was complete? and then close the
web-page?

now, you should be able to use the applications key, and arrow to
settings and press enter.

Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box
checked. Press spacebar to uncheck it.

now tab ok, press enter.

now, close avast, and re-start the program.

Good morning. I am in a bit of trouble here. I can't find where to
start
avast, do I go into the system tray? if so, I tried that, but then
jaws
went to the simple interface, and that's where it stopped talking. i
did
what you said or the scripts said to use the application key and
find
the settings, but I couldn't find where to uncheck the skins. Your
help
would be much appreciated and sorry if I keep coming back, but I'm
not
used to avast, and I don't want to go back to AVG as it's definitely
not

2008-12-09 Thread Roger Levine

Hi Kimber,
I only had an e-mail with a virus one time. Avast gives you choices how to
deal with it. One choice always is to delete it and another choice is to
put it in the chest (vault), or quarantine it. I think it is best to delete
it instead of dancing with it another time.

Hi Kimber,
Just remember that the most important thing about the antivirus game is
keeping viruses out of your computer. Avast is the guard at the door.
If Avast encounters a virus, it makes a siren soundand warning message.
It is comforting to know that every e-mail coming into your system is
frisked for a virus.

Hi Kimber,
My experiences with Avast scans is that you have to use the Jaws Cursor
to read the information during the scan. This isn't too hard to do, it
just takes a little practice. You can access the scan statistics from
the scan report from the desktop or the system tray.

Hi Kimber,
I have been noticing your progress with using the Avast program, and
glad you are doing so well with this new challenge. You can make
changes to Avast from the System Tray. Enter
insert+F11 and arrow to a line reading Avast on access scanner ---
and hit
the Enter Key. You can arrow up or down to make your choice. If you
select
program settings it will give you a tree-view of the Avast world.
Once you
arrow to a function, then use the Tab Key to read the choices. The
updating
submenu will allow you to both check the virus database and the
program

updates. To activate either one just hit enter and the updating will
proceed. In the tree-view arrow to the line reading update (basic)
and reference this choice using the Tab Key. You will find check
boxes for making updates automatic or prompted , or manual. The
default is already set to automatic for the virus database, but you
can also make the program updates automatic. As far as doing system
virus scans, I think many people virus scan their system to death.
Remember that Avast moniters all incoming and outgoing messages and
new files for viruses. System scans are very resource intensive.
Avast does not care what version of Jaws you are using. I am running
both the free and pro version of Avast on two different XP machines.
Automatic scheduling of scans can only be done with the pro version
of the program. I hope I have helped you some, but please continue
to ask for further information. I too am still learning about the
Avast system, and your questions also help in my gaining new
knowledge about the program.

Hi Stu,
I manage to get some things, but it is a wrestling match. I used the
Invisible cursor which helped some. By clicking some of the buttons, I was
able to get one of their videos. I also used the Jaws cursor, but it only
helped some. When I arrowed across on some lines and encountered a space

help, but it probably will take further experimentation.

I wish you good luck,

Hi,
I understand your frustration. To help clean-up the screen make sure that
Inline frames are turned off, and maybe turn off flash content. More

I am an experienced user, so I'm looking for tips more than perfect
solutions.

Do any of you others have this problem? Web pages seem to be getting less
convenient. I'm not talking about inaccessible. You can read everything
fine
-- just inconvenient. Kind of like putting the wheelchair ramp out back
with

the dumpsters instead of near the building's front door.

It used to be that when I googled for information, I'd find a variety of
mailing list archives with interesting posts. Or I'd find pages that
individuals created about that particular topic. But today, I tend instead
to find wikis and web forums, and sites with so many ads that I have to
read

hundreds of lines of irrelevant data only to discover a single line of
content, like no search results matched your query!

In wikis, half the links you select go to a page, with the same pleuthora
of

links and the message: You have followed a link to a page that does not
exist yet. If it doesn't exist, why do links take me there, anyway? I'd
feel more charitable about contributing to a wiki, if they didn't insist
on

wasting my time!

For another example, web forums will have more lines of text devoted to
trivia about who the user is, how many times he's posted, and when he
joined

the forum and whether he's online, rather than what content his message
contains. And often the post turns out to be something like I need the
same

information or That's a good idea. This is the sort of thing you might
say on the phone to a friend, but wasting bandwidth posting it seems
really

nuts.

Ad-supported sites don't seem to have any simple way to skip to the
content

directly. For a good example, just look at amazon.com. If they hadn't
invented amazon.com/access, I would've stopped shopping at amazon a long
time ago. But ten years ago, way before JAWS had quick keys, amazon was a
pleasure to navigate with screen access! And it worked fine without any
fancy virtual cursor!

Web forums are a nightmare. Every forum page has a list of posting rules,
thread tools and other clutter that I wish were in one place and not on
every single page. I don't want to reply, change my font size or submit
the

post to digg -- I just want to READ the darned thing! I don't care if
smileys are on, and how many cups of coffee the user had, I want to know
what he has to say!

Yet, other blind people are regularly accessing these things and not
complaining, so what am I missing? For example, the Hadley School for the
Blind and the AFB both have active web forums. There is a JAWS wiki,
though
the only thing I could actually find in it was a list of JAWS mailing
lists.

And many blind people put up blogs on sites full of advertising! And even
with blind bloggers' sites, you have to skip past reams of the irrelevant!

I am familiar with the quick keys for surfing of course. But they rarely
work in this Brave New Web-world. On websites devoted to product reviews
and

downloads, using H or number keys to move between headings takes me to
headings with words like recommended other categories and download
only it's a link to download something I'm not interested in. Try the
winamp
page for example -- it's easy to download a trial version of the
commercial

product by mistake.

On wikis, headings only appear if the user who edited that page added the
appropriate HTML code. There are lots of links, visited and unvisited
links
and many promising other page elements you can quick-key around. But most
of

those wiki-links lead nowhere. It's like being in one of those
text-adventure mazes! You are enticed by promises of cattegories, but how
can you tell which lead to only empty pages? I had planned to contribute
to

the JAWS wiki but after spending fifteen minutes and finding nothing, I
decided that a well-written contribution belonged elsewhere!

And on web forums, it is rare to see a heading at all. In blogs, you see
headings only if the blogger is a screen reader user, and even then not
all

the time. I guess some of the readers have more patience than I do.

Typing N to navigate to the next non-link text, usually takes me to an ad.
I
can learn all about increasing my sex appeal or how to get a stuffed
gorilla

absolutely free, but it's not the way to learn about a particular product
I'm researching. Often a page will have a full and

Hi guys,
I have a very weird problem. I am typing a word document in Microsoft
word 2003. What I have to do is type the document word for word as it is
in the recording. I first have to type the initials of the person that is
speaking. I then tab, and jaws 9 would say 1 point 2 2 2 inches from
left, one inch from top As I would continue to type the initials, it
would let me know how far I was from the top.
Now with jaws 10, everytime I type the two initials, it only says 1 point
5. I type a few more lines and it still says 1 point 5. Any suggestions.
I am using windows XP professional and jaws 10. When I go back to jaws 9
the problem is solved, so I don't think it is a Microsoft word problem.
I hope I am explaining my problem well enough. Thanks for any
suggestions.

have to use the #1 to go through a bunch of heading level ones before

Anyone know if there are settings I can check in order to fix this

Going to the text to speech tab in the sounds option in control panel.

I also do the change in the speech option in control panel, just in case

Re: [JAWS-Users] speech app in the controll panel and narrator

2008-11-30 Thread Roger Levine

Hi Maria,
You do not have to uninstall the XP Narrator. Narrator is a direct exec
module.
The reference for this is on the jaws Users Mailing List Home Page,
and is under the Programs Page and the Windows Heading, and go to number 6.
The new program belongs under the System Folder rather than the System32
Folder which

contains the old XP Narrator program.

First let me state this is more of a curiosity rather than a serious
problem/issue. I changed the default speech to scansoft Tom to use when I
update my voice files talk clips in Rockbox for my Ipod video 60GB player
and I am happy to report it worked. I hated that microsoft Sam voice.
However when I bring up narrator microsoft Sam is the voice that comes
up. Why isn't the voice not Scansoft Tom for narrator?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Jaws With Avast

2008-11-26 Thread Roger Levine

Hi Bryan,
I am using both the free and paid versions of Avast. I have the automatic
program update check box checked as aposed to being prompted or set to the
manual option. I have checked the first two checkboxes of the Report File
section, but I am not sure what this does for me and I have left the other
boxes as they were originally set.

Hello Marvin,

If you choose to use the simple interface then the application key gives
you the menus. You can set scan regions, do updates, etc. using the menus
and submenus that are present when you use the application key. You can
also use insert-F11 and use down arrow to the AVAST scanner icon that
usually tells you that six out of seven scanners are active (or something
like that). use tab key to the right mouse button click and press enter.
You will find most menus and submenus listed. Program settings, updates,
etc.

AVAST checks for definition updates every four hours automatically. The
default setting for program updates is to let you know when one is
available, but the definition updates are done automatically. . You can
update manually through the updates menu or through the updates tab of the
program settings dialog, but it is done automatically every four hours by
the program.

In my opinion, running full system scans doesn't need to be done often.
If you have the available scanners in AVAST automatically protecting the
system then the system is probably safe. you can also use the application
key in Windows Explorer when focus is on a file that you downloaded (or on
a folder when checking more than one file) and choose the scan option from
the context menu.

Although you can't use the AVAST program to schedule an automatic scan,
you can set up a scheduled task in both XP and Vista. In the task manager
you can specify the frequency and time for the scan. The executable used
by AVAST is ASHQUICK.EXE. When setting up the scheduled task you can
browse to that file in the AVAST folder. The AVAST folder is under the
ALWIL Software folder, which is under Program Files on the hard drive.
After putting ASHQUICK.EXE as the task name you should use a space and
then put in the target of the scan, such as c: for the whole drive or
c:\temp for a single folder.

Vista and XP are somewhat different in the way you use the task scheduler,
so if I can assist any more then feel free to contact me off list.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Jaws With Avast

2008-11-26 Thread Roger Levine

HiBryan,
You are correct, I was! referring to the program settings item. I should
have been clearerabout this. I have not experimented with the Report File
settings checkboxes, but it isn't really that critical. I am pleased with
the functioning of Avast. I have also used AVG 7.5 Free before it was
migrated to 8.0. Years ago I used Norton Antivirus and found it a
nightmare of complexity especially as it related to Jaws.

Hi Roger,

I think you are referring to the report section of the program settings
dialog box. If so, the section is where you tell the program whether or
not you want reports created. The reports are kept in c:\program
files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\Report and include such reports as
Resident Protection.TXT and Simple User Interface.TXT. All of the reports
are in text files. The most current report information is found at the
bottom of the files.

I am not using the paid version of the program but I am quite sure it has
its own scan scheduler that can be used. however, the free version can be
set up with the Windows Task Scheduler to scan on specific days and at
specific times. As I mentioned in my earlier post, the ASHQUICK.EXE is
the executable file that can be used.

Take care.

Plese try this website

www.hsbc.ca

Jaws is opening the page but announces there ar no links and it just
announces the site name, I cannot do anything else with it. It is a
banking site and there are a lot of links on the page.

Using one of our competitors there is no problem and the site is fully
acessibel, however if I close the competitor reader and then load Jaws
whilst the page is still open Jaws has no problems at all.

Any ideas why Jaws is having trouble with the initial page please.

Appreciate any help

When using Outlook Express, I have chosen Crystal 16 as my Say All Voice.
Yet, for some odd reason, I get Tom, one of the American voices which
either reads a line or two and then is replaced by Crystal 16 or reads the
entire document.
I'd like to get this setting fixed so that it reads with my chosen voice,
not some arbitrary voice coming out of Heaven knows where. Can anyone

[JAWS-Users] Hard Disk Backup programs

2008-11-06 Thread Roger Levine
Hi List,
I am looking for a hard disk backup program that is Jaws friendly and fairly
easy to use. A low cost program or suite of programs is okay. I also would
like to know which type of backup is recommended, either image or clone. A
friend suggested to check out the Acronis backup program , but I don't know if
it is Jaws friendly. I would appreciate any help from the List members.
Thank you,
Roger

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 beta expired?

2008-11-01 Thread Roger Levine

Hi,
I am using version 10.0.419 with no experation date problems. I have heard
that if you miss an update, it will break the beta update pattern. This is
probably the reason why you are having this issue. It appears that you are
locked out using version 10 until the official program release.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10 beta expired?

A strange thing happened this morning that I'm wondering if particular to
my

computer or if this applies to others as well. I turned my computer on as
normal and when done booting up I heard Jaws 10 beta version expired,
contact freedom scientific. Following this and on subsequent boots
nothing

but silence, not even a 40 minute demo mode. This beta version has been
working fine as I've been giving them feedback. I did not upgrade to the
latest beta version a couple of weeks or so ago but have the one just
before

it. I know these beta versions expire once they release the final JAWS
version and folks receive their CD's in the mail. Have they released the
CD
yet as I've not received or heard that they have. Fortunately I still
have

JAWS 9 on my machine so no big deal. However, I'm not looking forward to
going to work Monday morning and having the same thing happen down there.
Anyone else had this?

Al

Re: [JAWS-Users] Avast.

2008-10-29 Thread Roger Levine

Hi Sue,
My experience with Avast is is that every time you start the program the
scan is set to 50 percent (standard). My opinion is that people do scans
more than is necessary. Remember that Avast is constantly monitering your
data and software for viruses. I really think Avast is a very Jaws friendly
program and is quite thorough in its anti virus function.

When scanning with Avast, is the thorough scan button highlighted by
default does anyone know? I'm just wondering because after opening Avast,
I check the local hard disks check box then press alt A to start the scan.
I know that you can do a quick, standard and thorough scan and I'm just
wondering if the thorough scan button is highlighted so that the thorough
scan is performed each time you do a scan.

I hope this makes sense to someone as I've not explained myself very well.

Thanks.

Hi,
You can monitor the scan using the Jaws Cursor. You have to arrow around
abit, but it's doable. The Simple Interface is the most practical to use.

It seems to be working fine now. Another quick question...
Can you schedule scans in avast? If so, how would you do that as I don't

Thanks again

Hi Faisal,

Try the steps below.
do the following two things to make Avast more accessible.
Configuring Avast to not use the skins for the simple user interface:
1. Start Avast.
2. Wait for the memory test to be completed, then close the web page that
appears. You should now land on a dummy check box.
3. Press the applications key to open a context menu, down arrow to
settings

and press enter. The Programme Settings dialogue box appears, with the
categories tree gaining focus.
4. Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box
checked. Press space to uncheck it.
5. Tab to ok and press enter. You'll land back on the dummy check box.
6. Close and restart Avast. You should now be able to tab through the
controls in this programme.
Configuring JAWS to read lists in Avast:
1. Make sure that you're focused on the Avast Simple User Interface.
2. Press JAWS key 6 to open Configuration Manager.
3. Press enter to accept the New Configuration File dialogue box.
4. Press alt s to open the set options menu, then press a. The advanced
Options dialogue box appears.
5. Shift tab till you hear, Rely on MSAA for List Views check box not
checked. Press space to check it.
6. Press enter to activate the ok button.
7. Either press control s to save your configuration file immediately, or
press alt F4, pressing enter to activate the yes button on the confirm
dialogue box.
By doing these steps, you'll resolve an issue on some machines whereby
JAWS

stops speaking when focused on any of the lists in Avast.

for a complete scan, check all local disks, check archives, move the
slider to 100% (thorough scan), and click start. Hope that helps.

The link below will provide you with more information.

http://www.accessible-devices.com/AvastProgram.html

Also, once the scan has started turn on your Jaws cursor or route Jaws
cursor to PC cursor with Jaws key + minus key on num pad, then press your
home or control + home keys, then arrow down and you will run across
something that tells you what percentage of scan has been completed.
Hope all this helps. Have a nice weekend.

Mike

Well, I had installed it over the weekend and right before posting this
message I had downloaded the latest defs and installed them and from
reading on the status screen, it was saying this..

SE1R47 24.05.2005

So after reading the 2005 I was thinking this thing is like way outdated.

I followed the steps to the letter to download and install just like those
steps said and all went accordingly, then I did the scan and before the
scan, I got to the status screen and this is where I believe another David
Whitehead had posted awhile back to look at that area so you would know
you had installed the latest def's. This is what I did and that 2005 thing
threw me..

So did I mess up some where?

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Adaware?

Hello Patricia,

Close the Ad-Aware program if it is opened. Open the DEFS.ZIP file that
you downloaded. Select the DEFS.REF file that is in the zipped file and
copy it to the clipboard. Use either My Computer or Windows Explorer to
move to c:\program files\lavasoft\AdAware SE Personal. When you follow
the above path and the AdAware folder is opened then paste the DEFS.REF
file into the folder. Answer yes when you are asked if you want to
overwrite or replace the existing DEFS,.REF file. You can then close the
open folders and open the program to use it.

When the program opens, route the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor and use the
down arrow key four times to get to the line that shows the date for the
currently installed definitions.

Take care.

Well can you tell me if, I'm suppose to delete the old Def's or seems
like before there was another way to do this where you type in a path
name and I did that for a time, but have lost those instructions, grrr.

I just found some other posts of this very subject and redownloaded them
only this time they are a .zip file. So do I unzip before pasting them
into the Lavasoft folder?

Thanks,

Patricia

Well, I had installed it over the weekend and right before posting this
message I had downloaded the latest defs and installed them and from
reading on the status screen, it was saying this..

SE1R47 24.05.2005

So after reading the 2005 I was thinking this thing is like way
outdated.

I followed the steps to the letter to download and install just like
those steps said and all went accordingly, then I did the scan and
before the scan, I got to the status screen and this is where I believe
another David Whitehead had posted awhile back to look at that area so
you would know you had installed the latest def's. This is what I did
and that 2005 thing threw me..

So did I mess up some where?

Hi David,

I was wondering if the Adaware up on your site and the scripts still
works?
Or what I mean to ask is, Adaware still a functional spy removal
program even downloading and installing the Def.Ref file as
instructed in the upper portion of the download link of Adaware on
your web site?

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Windows Narrator Program

2008-08-09 Thread Roger Levine

Hi List,
I have successfully invoked this version of Narrator. My experience with it so
far seems to indicate some program instability, but this might be due to my own
set of circumstances. I am running XP Pro and the latest version of JAWS. The
good voices do work with this version of Narrator (Realspeak etc.).

Hi Mike,
Narrator does not take an install.
To use it, do the following:

(This is the version of narrator that ships with Win2k pro. You can get it to
work in Windows XP by simply placing these 2 files in any directory except
system32, as long as they stay together. It is more functional than the version
that ships with XP.

narrator5.0.2195.6619.zip Download Link)
 1. extract the files from the zip archive.
2. copy the files to the clipboard
3. paste the files in the following folder:
c:\Windows\system
4. Create a shortcut on the desktop for the, Narrator.exe file.
You may assign a hotkey for the shortcut if you want.
That's it, you are done.
Simply activating the shortcut, will load Narrator
If you have other sappi voices on your system,
the ones that will work with this version of Narrator will
show up in the Narrator main window under the voices dialogue.

Hi List,

AVG Anti-Virus will do that if you have it configured to certify incoming
email. When AVG certifies incoming mail, it causes Outlook Express to see
the certification as an attachment. If you have AVG, open the Control

In the directions it only states how to set JAWS up with XP and doesn't
state on which type of computer. Maybe David can shed better light on

topic so we all feel more secure with this information.s

 Windows XP and JAWS

This topic discusses settings changes we recommend you make when using
 JAWS
in Windows XP Home or Professional. You must be logged in with
administrative rights to make several of these changes. Many of these
settings are changed within Control Panel. To open Control Panel, press
 the
WINDOWS KEY to open the Start Menu, move to Control Panel, and press
 ENTER.

Depending on your system settings, Control Panel either opens in a
 separate
window, or the Control Panel items open as a sub-menu. We recommend making
 changes in the following areas:

 Display Properties
 Folder Options
 Start Menu
 Windows Explorer System Performance

Hi,
In Jaws Version 9 the Insert V is now changed. It is now Jaws Options. Do
an insert V and type the letter V, you will be in a tree view. Arrow down
one line and hit the Spacebar to choose Virtual Cursor, then hit the Enter
Key. This will make the copy to clipboard without the formatting data. This
should solve your problems.

 ||| Hi, Not sure, but try pressing tab and shift tab. When you
 |||  hit   tab it  should
 ||| say the address it selected, and shifttab goes back to the
