Hello Jim,

Are you talking about word documents? If you are I am using word 2007 and
you can press the alt key while in the document and arrow to the right until
you hear review and down arrow until you then hear protect sub menu. Press
right arrow on the sub menu to open it and you will find a protect document
button I believe this button when pressed will effectively make your
document a read only document. I hope this helps

Re: [JAWS-Users] Adding notes to a PowerPoint in PowerPoint 2007

2014-03-18 Thread Ryan West

Hello Don,

The notes are kind of tricky in PowerPoint. I always open a word doc and
write my notes in word since I can spell check in word. I then copy and
paste them in the notes pain of the chosen slide. After you do there is no
way to edit them or see them with a jaws curser, so it looks like you did
not put any notes on the page but they are there. However, after you start
your slide show a control shift N will announce any notes you have on a
page. I hope this helps!

So, if I have not invoked mute with the JAWS key spacebar s sequence then

system sounds?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Ongoing problem with Outlook 2007 using Jaws 14 or
15beta

I am trying to identify why Outlook 2007 on my Windows 7 64 bit Toshiba
notebook computer does not work properly with either Jaws 14 or Jaws 15
beta. I have spoken to both Fs tech support and Microsoft accessibility
support without any success. The problem is that when I open Outlook 2007
in Jaws 14 or 15 beta Jaws will read emails properly for a while, 3 to 5
minutes or so. However at some point Jaws stops reading emails that are in
html format. Jaws presents them in a strange format with many garbled text
and the html commands such as t to move to tables and h to move to headings
do not work. Instead the letter t or h will appear in the body of the
email. And the cursor key (+ on the numpad) says pc cursor rather than
virtual pc cursor which it says when Jaws is working properly when reading
open html emails. If I close Outlook and reopen it Jaws will work properly
again for a few minutes and then revert to not displaying html emails
correctly.

Fs tech support has been unable to duplicate this problem on their computers
and have received no reports from other Jaws users with my problem. FS had
me completely uninstall Jaws 14 and do a clean reinstall but that did not
eliminate the problem. they also checked all my Jaws 14 settings and they
seem to be working properly.

Microsoft support says it must be a Fs issue since my Outlook 2007
installation looks fine to them. They checked all my settings for Outlook
2007 and nothing they did eliminated the problem. I also ran the Office
diagnostic from the Outlook 2007 help menu and it found no problems with my
Outlook 2007 program.

So I am wondering what could be happening on my system to cause this to
happen. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg Washington

Hello Joe,

I am not sure what you need help with? What is going on with your computer?
If your computer freezes up pushing the power button to turn off the
computer may be what you need to do. then if it does not come back on
normally you may need to press f 11 right after it starts up to get it to
start windows normally. If you have sighted assistance he can highlight
start windows normally and press enter. I hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] creating a website with Jaws 14

2013-06-05 Thread Ryan West
Hello all listers,

I am in my last term of my bachelor’s degree program for my Health and Wellness
degree and for my capstone class I need to build a website. My question to all
of you is this which one of these three website builders is most compatible
with Jaws 14 and windows 7(webs.com, weebly.com, or wordpress.com)
I have never created any websites before and I am feeling just a little
overwelmed by the thought of having to design my own website. Any help will be
much appreciated!

Hello Flor,

Yes, this is true most of the time, but now an then I have run across combo
boxes that when opened if you arrow down it activates the selected item. I
think it is because the developer thought it a good idea to have quick
response to a sighted persons mouse click. So, if a normal alt down arrow
then down arrowing through the list works great! If not, the jaws cursor
can navidgate without selecting an item in the list.

Hi Everyone,

I just got a new HP Envy laptop running Windows 8. I am using the latest
build of JAWS 14. The function keys on the laptop have lost their mind. I
cannot use the JAWS key with any of the function keys to get the expected
function. For example, caps lock plus F12 does not give me the time. If I
press F1, without holding down anything, JAWS says Windows F1 and it acts as
though I were holding down the Windows key even though I am not. If I press
F2 or F3, it says MK wheel click. If I press F4, it says Windows P.
This problem only effects the function keys (F1 through F12). If I use a
external USB keyboard, everything works normally. So, is there a software
issue here or is the keyboard on my new laptop defective?

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] two issues with the latest update.

Hello,

could it be that your lap top went back to factory defaults somehow and that
is causing the problem with the insert key? I only say this because on my
Hp laptop I had the same problems when it came from the factory and I had to
change something in the bios. It fixed part of the problem but not all of
it so I just decided to use an external keyboard and it solved the problem.

two issues I've found.

These are both after restarting the pc after the update was installed
successfully.

1. you are unable to use insert f11 to get to the system tray, it just
doesn't open the list of items.

2. I have a htm file with all my contacts, if i use an insert f to find a
contact the dialogue doesn't open.

Both these things were working yesterday before installing the new update.

I haven't installed any new software prior to update.

I am running as administrator when installing update.

Re: [JAWS-Users] research it

2012-06-26 Thread Ryan West

Hello Norman,

I just put in Saturdays date as 06/23/2012 and it gave me all the scores for
Saturday. I also just put in todays date as 06/26/2012 and it gave me the
scores of the games in progress and what inning they were in. Not sure what
is going on with your research it but it works here.

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF documents in JAWS 13

2012-06-22 Thread Ryan West

Hello Tara,

If you press incert and space bar you will hear a click then press the
letter o, followed by the letter w. You will hear it say OCR finished and
the jaws curser will become active and if you then arrow down it will read
the ocr for the text in that window. You will have to then page down and go
through the process again for each new page. I hope this answers your
question about JFW's OCR. It is a little bit limited but it works great in
a pinch.

Hello Flor,

According to the JFW help file on OCR, the Control 1 will make the pdf
actual size while in Adobe reader. It will make the image larger so JFW's

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS Word 2007 Checkboxes

2012-06-09 Thread Ryan West

Hello Muhammad Babar Shahzad,
I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish? Do you want the document
to be read only, or do you want to password protect? If password protection
is what you want pressing alt F then E, followed by E will bring you to a
password protection dialog box in which you can put in a password and press
enter and you will then be prompted to confirm the password. A bit of
caution though, if you put a password on a document and then forget the
password you will not be able to get into your document. If making a
document read only is your goal, then follow these steps. 1. Press f-12 for
the save as dialog. 2. press the letter L for the tools menu, then down
arrow and press enter on general options. 3. To check the read only check
box you can press alt E or tab to the box and press the space bar. 4. If
you have already saved the document you will want to save it again now with
another name to make it read only. If you want to make a read only document
no longer read only follow the previous steps and step 3 pressing the alt E
key sequence will uncheck the read only check box. I hope this helps!

it says see more results Is there any way to reset this without

Re: [JAWS-Users] Packard-Bell Laptops

2012-04-02 Thread Ryan West

Hello,
I hope his advice works for you as for me I tried what he mentioned and it
did not work so I had to go the hard rout and fix it through the bios. Good
luck let me know how it worked out for you.

No. No! This is easy in Windows 7. Open your menus with the Windows key and
type mobility center without the quotes or enough to find it. Go through
the settings and there is clearly a setting about function keys. Select the
other option and it is all fixed. I cannot see the specific steps from where
I am but if you need them, I'll be glad to write it out and e-mail again.
Jaws will work perfect. I fought this for years till someone told me the
same thing on this list and life is so much better.

Hello Steven, I had the same problem with my new hp lap top and what you
have to do is have someone with sight go into the bios and change the
function keys to perform the functions without depressing the F/n key. Many
new laptops are now coming with media keys installed in the function
keys.As far as I know JFW will not work in the BIOS so you will need sighted
help.

Hi friends,

Does anyone have a Packard-Bell laptop.
For some reason, the function keys 1 through 10 don't seem to perform
standard operations without holding down the FN key and I am wondering if
there is a way to turn this feature off?

Many thanks in anticipation for any help,

Steve.

[JAWS-Users] pdf and jfw 13

2012-03-10 Thread Ryan West
Hello listers,

I have a text book on pdf that is driving me crazy. I wonder if anyone can
help me figure out how to make jaws read a pdf doc that has two columns . I am
using windows 7 and jfw 13.0.718. The problem is I start reading down the page
and it will read one Colum of text and sometimes it will skip over to the other
Colum and other times it will not read the other Colum at all. I miss the text
and this becomes a problem .

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello

I am new to the list and it has been a long time since I used a computer. I
am using CDEX to extract my CDs and put them in a music file on the
computer. I am most of the way done but it seems that each artist is placed
in reverse alphabetical order. How can I fix this problem? I would like it
to be in the correct order.

I am using windows 7 and Jaws 13. CDEX is 1.7.

I respectfully disagree with you. Prior to my upgrade I could hit the enter
key and jaws would read the entire message. In fact I just tested my theory
using Jaws v11 and the entire message was read after hitting enter.

Uhh. it is normal for JFW to not read out the entire msg when u open an
email up by hitting the enter key. It is normal to enter the 'say all' key
stroke to read the whole msg.

Today I installed the latest v13 jaws release and now when I hit enter on an

stop. How do I make it read the entire message without having to use the say
all command?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Multiple Selection in A List Box Problems

2012-02-24 Thread Ryan West

Hello Joy,

I think maybe what is happening is that jaws activates the list box when you
enter it and then if you pressed the space bar it deactivates the list box
so if you try all the steps without the first step of pressing the space
bar it may work. Good luck, hope this helps.

refreshed the page, and deleted my browsing history, ... anything else I can
try? Or is there something I don't know about?

Thank you for any help.
