First of all, I use Internet Explorer, I tried firefox once, but found that
it introduced its own problems, so I went back to IE.

One common problem is buttons with no meaningful labels, just "button"
or "submit query". When there's only one it's not much of a problem, but
when you get three buttons next to each other all with the same useless
label.

Today I had to return an item, I was able to get to the returns page, but
could not check the check box for the item I was returning, nor could I get
the drop down list of reasons for my return to work. In the end I had to
call their customer service and get their help to submit the return request.
This wasn't the first time I had to do this either, the first was several
months ago and the problem persists, as does the unlabeled buttons problem
which is well over a year old.

Honestly, I would think that it would be more efficient to use best
practices for accessibility on their main site rather than to try to
segregate screen reader user to an equally flawed and less functional site.
It rather reminds me of how African Americans were treated in the early
sixties and before, separate and unequal.

Cheers!

Excellent work, Jim.
I'd like to suggest a possible change to the way you are recording which
will improve the quality of the sound.
There are audio mixers available which would allow you to send the signal
from your PC and your voice into a hard wired connection. In doing so, the
recording software would have a much cleaner signal to process.

This is in no way a criticism. Your work and delivery is top notch.
I'm a professional musician and for me, getting the best sound available is
important.
If you'd like to try this suggestion, please e-mail me off list and I can
research what is currently available for you.
Keep up the good work.

If you come up with a recording of good quality let me know. I have posted
recordings from list members on the audio page in the past. I have been away

things are starting to settle down maybe come fall I might try my hand at
another recording if an idea crosses my mind so to speak. Often times
something will occur to me that might turn out to make a good tutorial which

Yes, voice recorder looks like the replacement for sound recorder.
I did away with the audio file because of its bad quality.
I am not set up to make good quality recordings.
I will leave that to you, you make very nice and good quality recordings.
Sorry about all the emails concerning the audio recording.

I just discovered a new program to record with in w-10.
called voice recorder, very accessible.
you can see the buttons for record, stop, length of recording, when you are
done you can:
trim the beginning and the end of the recording, you can rename it as well.
it records in m4.a
I just added, w-10 navigation lesson 1 to one drive.
Not a great recording quality, I will get it better next time.
Use windows media player or voice recorderin w-10 to play it.
After you download it, go to your download folder.
press the application key, go down to open with.
choose windows media player.
Or, voice recorder in w-10.
press enter to play it.
here is the link again...

Hi leonard and all.
Thanks for the info on getting an icon of OneDrive to show up on my desktop.
I did some research on Google last night, and this might be useful for those
with Windows 8.1. Here is what I found.
I found an article that says that OneDrive is preinstalled on Windows
8.1 and there is no desktop program to download for Windows 8.1, because it
is preinstalled. You have to go to files explorer, and there is a folder
there called OneDrive. You put all of your material in that folder, and you
can even save your documents straight to that place on your computer. With
Windows 8.1, it is as though OneDrive is another drive built right into your
computer. You can manage your stuff from this OneDrive in files explorer
just like on your C-drive.
Just thought I would let you know what I found out about that. Take care
all and have a great day.

Hi all
I hope it is OK to ask this here. I am using Jaws and recently bought my
Windows 8.1 machine. I had my local tech guy help set things up. He put all
the things I normally use like Word, Outlook, Internet etc. on the desktop
and told me not to go near the start screen as it is not accessible. He
knows a little about Jaws but not a lot. Seeing mention of the weather app
caused me to have a bit of a look around on the start screen and I wonder
how accessible it is with Jaws as I'd like to be making use of it if some
things are accessible. I'm not sure where to start though. I found weather
bug as the weather had been mentioned here and got through an agreement for
its use but it lands on Auckland our main city and I can't tell if you can
change where it looks. I'm sure you can so wondered if anyone has any tips
about using things on the start screen if it is in fact usable. Can we also
use the touch feature on the screen itself? If this is too broad to be
asking on this list just tell me and I'll ask elsewhere. As I am using Jaws
15 though I thought it should be OK to ask at least whether the start screen
is accessible even if that's all I can find out. I shall continue to play
with tabbing and arrowing around but am wondering if there are shortcuts.
Cheers

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Virtual Ribbons Explained

Hi LeDon,

I believe you wanted the Virtual Ribbons explained. Here you go, from
Jaws
training:

The Virtual Ribbon Menu Feature - New in JAWS 12
Introduction

The ribbon is a new style of menu available in many new applications
being
released today. Ribbons first appeared in Office 2007 programs, but
are now
becoming more common in other applications tailored for the WindowsR 7

operating system. Ribbons create an accessibility challenge due to
inconsistent
navigation between various groups and items. For example, the lower
ribbon
contains groups of icons, sometimes arranged in several rows. When you
press
the ARROW keys to move between items in a group, you can skip items if
there
is a row above or below the one you are on. When pressing the ARROW
keys or
TAB, no indication is given when focus leaves one group and enters
another.
You cannot use first letter navigation in the ribbons, because
pressing keys
might activate ribbon key tips. Finally, because of a group's layout,
you do
not know if you should navigate up, down, left, or right to select an
item.

The new virtual ribbon menu feature in JAWSR screen reading software
provides predictable navigation, lets you see everything in the
ribbon, and
offers
consistency when navigating with the ARROW keys. For example, each
group on
the lower ribbon is treated as a submenu. Once you open the group
submenu,
you can press DOWN ARROW to move through all of the items within that
group.
When you reach the bottom of the items in that group, focus wraps back
to
the top item, and vice versa. You can also use first letter navigation
in
the virtual ribbon menu. Here are a few keystrokes to help you get
started
using
the virtual ribbon menu:

list of 6 items
. Move from one ribbon tab to another, ALT to move to the first tab,
then
LEFT or RIGHT ARROW. JAWS reads the name of the tab as you move to it.
. Move from an upper ribbon tab to the lower ribbon groups, DOWN ARROW
or
ENTER. JAWS announces and treats the lower ribbon groups as if they
were
submenus.

. Open a ribbon group submenu, RIGHT ARROW or ENTER.
. Navigate the items within each submenu, UP or DOWN ARROW, or first
letter
navigation.
. Close a submenu, LEFT ARROW or ESC.
. Move from the lower ribbon back to the upper ribbon, ESC.
list end

NOTE: One nice feature of the JAWS virtual ribbon menu is that when
you
activate an item and focus returns to the document or application you
are
working
on, JAWS remembers where you just were on the ribbon. If you press ALT

again, instead of having to go back to the upper ribbon and find your
place
again,
JAWS goes right back to where it was previously, in the same group,
and on
the exact same control you were last on.

I'll demonstrate all of these things to you, and you can practice
along with
me in just a few minutes.

Also, just a reminder, whenever you want to pause the audio of this
DAISY
book, just press CTRL+P. When you are ready to resume, press CTRL+P
again.
Remember,
you can leave the DAISY book in the background and use this keystroke
to
play or pause the audio while working on your practice documents in
the
foreground.
When FSReader DAISY player is open, even in the background, use this
keystroke to toggle the audio on and off. If you need to print
something
while FSReader
is open, just go to the File menu and choose Print.

Using the JAWS Virtual Ribbon Menu as Opposed to the Microsoft Ribbon
- Some
Differences

The virtual ribbon menus feature allows for ribbon navigation using
standard
menu type commands such as scrolling with the arrow keys and first
letter
navigation. While virtual ribbon menus are enabled with JAWS, the
built-in
key tips and accelerator keys that appear visually on the ribbon and
on the
buttons are disabled.

For example, to insert a bookmark in MicrosoftR Word, here are the
steps for
both scenarios, one using the ribbon, and the second one using JAWS
virtual
ribbon menus:

Using Microsoft Word Key Tips:

list of 2 items
. Using the built-in keyboard access in Microsoft Word, you would
first
press ALT+N to move to the Insert tab of the ribbon.
. Next, you press the letter K,

Hello, David F and Eric D,
wow! Thank you both, for all this Excel Check Book information and
assistance. Yet, I may have a loaded question. Can either of you, provide
a Check Writing and printing program that works favorably and relatively
easy with Jaws and that can be printed up in a public and business accepted
manner, and where No format questions will be targeted back to a user, such
as myself!

The reason I ask, is I just went through a check payment conflict with a
very notable cable company, where their computer system misread my most
recent payment check, and for the last week my cable service has been turned
off, each day at 11:45 AM; and it has been quite a battle with them, and I
even had to get my bank involved to back my payment of $100; where the cable
company's computer said I only paid $10. This is why I am asking this
question; and I am seeking Technical and quality advice, so that this
situation my be avoided in the future. To let you both know, I write my
checks using a plastic check template, and on the line for writing the
dollar amount in words, I Print those words in Capital Letters, for easy
recognition, and I never have written any check that has cents on it, as
they are always written in an even dollar amounts. Yet, this careful
technique failed me, in this situation; and that is Why I am asking such a
question, to evade this from happening in the future.

Thank you both, for any and all assistance.

Respectfully

Hi Trish,
You wouldn't possibly have steps on doing that with balloon messages for
windows eight would you ?
thanks in advance
Re: [JAWS-Users] Balloon Messages
Here is a tip on how to set the time for how long balloon messages will
stay
up so you can have time to access them.

In Windows 7 it's under Ease of Access. Type Ease of Access in to the
search box in the start prompt. In the Ease of Access Center go to,
Make it
easier to focus on tasks, and hit enter. Near the end of the options that
come up is a combo box with different time settings to adjust the time that
those balloons stay on screen.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Detailed instructions for the Sample Check BookRegister Sample file

2014-03-05 Thread dooie13

Hello, David F and Eric D,
wow! Thank you both, for all this Excel Check Book information
and assistance. Yet, I may have a loaded question. Can either
of you, provide a Check Writing and printing program that works
favorably and relatively easy with Jaws and that can be printed
up in a public and business accepted manner, and where No format
questions will be targeted back to a user, such as myself!

The reason I ask, is I just went through a check payment conflict
with a very notable cable company, where their computer system
misread my most recent payment check, and for the last week my
cable service has been turned off, each day at 11:45 AM; and it
has been quite a battle with them, and I even had to get my bank
involved to back my payment of $100; where the cable company's
computer said I only paid $10. This is why I am asking this
question; and I am seeking Technical and quality advice, so that
this situation my be avoided in the future. To let you both
know, I write my checks using a plastic check template, and on
the line for writing the dollar amount in words, I Print those
words in Capital Letters, for easy recognition, and I never have
written any check that has cents on it, as they are always
written in an even dollar amounts. Yet, this careful technique
failed me, in this situation; and that is Why I am asking such a
question, to evade this from happening in the future.

Thank you both, for any and all assistance.

Respectfully

Book

Register Sample file

All,

If you plan to set this up and try it, I have given more detailed
instructions for the Check Book Register file in Excel below. It
takes a
little bit to understand this setup, but once you get it, you'll
find it
works quite well. If you have trouble, I'm sure someone on this
list would
be happy to Tandem to your computer and help you set it up so you
can try it

out.

Here you go:
Get the file from:
http://www.jaws-users.com/text/Office/Sample-checkbook-register.h
tml

1. Save the file and give it a name you wish to use.
2. Now open the newly named file in Excel and move to Column A,
Row 4, (this
is the intersection of the row and column headings and the next
step is to

inform JAWS of that).
3. Press Insert + V to get into Quick Settings of JAWS for
Excel.
4. Press the letter T, and then down arrow to the item that says
Define

Name Column and Row Titles Override Off.
5. Press Space Bar a couple of times so the item above is set to
On for the

Current File.
6. Now down arrow a few times to the item called: Column Titles
to Row
Range. Press Space and you should hear it reflect 4, since you
were on row

4.
7. Now down arrow once to the item called: Row Titles to Column
Range.
Press Space and you should hear it reflect A, since you were in
column A.
8. Tab 3 times now to the OK button and press enter to dismiss
the Dialog

and you are done.

In the future, anytime you open a spread sheet with the name you
gave this
one, it will assume that Row 4 has the column headings and Column
A has the
row headings. If you are moving around in the area below and to
the right of
that intersecting point, it should read the headings as you
navigate to make

it easier to understand where you are.

Hope this Helps,
Eric

Re: [JAWS-Users] New Build of Winamp 5.666 now available

2013-12-26 Thread dooie13

Hello to All,

I am 100% Blind, and live by myself; and I have a Dell Tower,
Win7, 64 bit PC with Jaws 14; and I am trying to put WinAmp
5.6/5.66 on it.

Back on Friday, November 22, Y13; I tried using a link from an
Email of this Support Group to do a download of the WinAmp 5.6
version; and I was going to follow the suggestion to Save the
program first, before trying to do a run; and once that began,
all of a sudden my Dell Tower locked up with some sort of a
statement saying the following:

NPT this 64 bit XVC dll program can not run on Windows computer,
go to System Administrator for help or call the software vendor;
press OK. That is about the best I can do for presenting the
statement i was confronted with. If I was to hit OK, Jaws was
totally lost.

If I hit Alt tab; I would get a statement saying the following:
windows log on windows log on dialog use tab. And when tab is
pressed, there is absolutely nothing thereafter.

I can only Alt tab, back and forth between those 2
Statements/lines.

The following week, the Dell Tower was taken to a Boundless
Assistive Technology group, as I had been told over the phone
that this was a Virus, that could only be corrected with the PC
on site.  Then, 3 days later I got the PC back, and all was fine;
but then on Thursday, December 19, Y13; I tried to download and
save the new WinAmp 5.66 upgrade that was on this Support Group's
listing, and on another new support groups list, by either the
owner, or one of it's moderators. I initialized the link and
tried to Save, not Run the program once again,; and then, I
received it exact same failure line as above; and the Dell Tower
is totally locked up again, and it will have to go back in, to
get this repetitive viral problem corrected.

Note; My sighted brother was on site when this 2nd lockup
occurred; and he tried using the mouse and monitor, with
absolutely No luck or corrective action. Has anyone else
experienced such a similar situation with WinAmp downloads! Might
anyone have any workable suggestions for this dilemma!

Any and all suggestions and information will be greatly
appreciated.

Good Holiday Cheer!

PST mean Personal Store Table.
