You can also try routing JAWS cursor to PC (Insert+numpad minus) then do 1 or 2 left mouse clicks (numpad /). Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws cursor reads blanks problem
The JAWS Cursor is becoming more and more useful year after year. In Windows Vista or newer, JAWS cursor will say blank in apps wose UIs use DirectDraw and hardware acceleration to draw screen contents. In 8 and newer, due to changes in the underlying DCM technology which supports assistive technologies video drivers like JAWS's FS Video Intercept, you will not be able to use JAWS cursor in Unrestricted mode, and performance will be a bit worser if your video card is not WDDM1.3-based. Additionally, Windows 8 and 10 “universal” or Modern apps does not allow using JAWS cursor at all. So, answering your specific question: If you aren't receiving alerts about video driver when you start JAWS, you'll probably fix nothing by changing the video card. Hope it helps. 2017-10-26 10:15 GMT-03:00 Fanus: > Hello list > For a long time I get no info when I use the jaws cursor. JFW just says > “blank blank ...” when I use the arrow keys. Firefox and Thunderbird both use Direct2D renderingby default. This prevents the JAWS cursor from detecting information. Fortunatelyit is easy to disable this rendering. You need to do it once for each versionof Firefox and Thunderbird you use on your system. To do this you need to settwo configuration variables to true: gfx.direct2d.disabled, and layers.acceleration.disabled. 1. Open the Configuration Editor. In Firefox, enter about:config in the address bar. In Thunderbird, go to the Tools menu and navigate to Options, Advanced, General, then Config Editor. 2. Once in the Configuration editor, press TAB until you are in the list of options. 3. Pressing UP or DOWN ARROW will move you between options or typing the first few letters of an option's name will move you to a specific option in the list. In this case, type gfx and press DOWN ARROW to gfx.direct2d.disabled. 4. Assuming the option is set to false, press the APPLICATIONS KEY to open the context menu and choose Toggle. This will change the option to true. 5. Go through the same process for layers.acceleration.disabled. 6. Close the Configuration Editor and restart Firefox or Thunderbird. The JAWS cursor should now show content. Hth. Angela from Italy Il 01/04/2015 21:19, Dujari, Prateek ha scritto: Hello gang. See also this discussion: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1095971 Harri This is the default setting: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled set Boolean true This is what I changed it to: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled set Boolean false With this line of text highlighted, press the application key to open the context menu press the letter, T, to toggle it to true or false. [JAWS-Users] JAWS cursor still not reading anything on a web page in Firefox after the about: config changes
Hello there. I made the changes as recommended by Angela with the GFX and layer setting to true as she suggests below. The only thing changed is the JAWS cursor now just reads the top title bar of the web page saying the name of that web page (for example BBC or whatever) and then saying the browser name 'Mozilla Firefox'. So my problem remains. I'd like to not only peruse the whole page on the screen with the JAWS cursor but also be able to then click on buttons and links on the page using the jaws cursor just like you can do with the default Internet Explorer configuration. Any further solutions please? Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Cursor Firefox 34.0.5
Hi Scorpio, Disabling hardware graphics acceleration in Office / Word 2010 / 2013 will help these programs as well. Check these notes: From: Jean Menzies via Jfw Just thought I'd share this for those who want to try it. The symptom. I've often found sluggish performance in Word when searching, or when opening a second document. Jaws seems to either not be able to read a screen without refreshing, or, in searching, it would sometimes take two tries to get to the results. Just plain sluggish. In going through settings, I came across an option to Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration. I checked that and things seem to be much more responsive now. I'll see how the day goes. But if anyone wants to do this, go into Options, Advanced, and the item is in there. If you use the, Alt + G keystroke, you'll get to it much quicker. From what I read on Google, if you change it in one MS program, it should affect all of them. Hey, I don't need graphics anyway. haha. Hope this works. Jean Note From Mike B.: My settings wouldn't stick until I checked the, prompt to update style, checkbox. To get to this checkbox the keystroke is, Alt + Y. Hi Jean Ted, I went into my MS Word 2010 played around with these 2 settings a little bit what I found was, sometimes they would hold sometimes not. So, when I found that they were both checked after a few attempts of saving these settings again,I got the hell out with the escape key! LOL LOL Note: I'm not sure but, it might make a difference in which order you check these options. I've got mine saved now , don't want to play around anymore. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Cursor Firefox
Hi All, This is a note I found for the use of the Jaws cursor for Windows7, J14 / 15, Firefox. I tried the steps below with XP, J13, Firefox 26, they appear to be working. It's tricky so, just a warning. Reviewing a Web Page With the JAWS Cursor While Using Mozilla Firefox Version 4 and newer (Adapted from a GW Micro Knowledge Base article) When using Mozilla Firefox version 4 or newer, reviewing web pages using the JAWS Cursor is problematic. Mozilla is using a new graphical technology in Firefox version 4 and newer which bypasses the offscreen model, (OSM). Since JAWS For Windows depends on the OSM to allow the user to review the screen using the JAWS Cursor, things don't work the same as with older versions of Firefox, (such as version 3.6). Solution: 1. Launch Mozilla Firefox. 2. Press Control-L to open a new link. 3. Type about:config and press Enter. 4. If you are presented with a dialog which warns you about the dangers of making changes, Tab to the I'll be careful, I promise! button and press Enter. 5. At this point you should be out of Virtual Cursor mode and on a filter Edit Box. If not, turn off Virtual Cursor mode by pressing JAWS Key - z. 6. In the filter Edit Box type direct2d.disabled. 7. Press Tab to get to the list of filtered entries and you should see one called gfx.direct2d.disabled with a default value of False. 8. Press Enter to toggle this value to True. 9. Press Shift-Tab to get back to the filter Edit Box and type layers.acceleration.disabled. 10. Press Tab to get to the list of filtered entries and you should see one called layers.acceleration.disabled with a default value of False. 11. Press Enter to toggle this value to True. 12. Press Control-W to close the configuration window. 13. Restart Firefox. you should now be able to use the JAWS Cursor to review web pages while using Mozilla Firefox version 4 and newer. *** end of snip *** Dave Carlson Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor not following PC cursor
the trouble is you missed a step, on a webpage you need to stop the auto read of the page, then update the page (the trick they use for the page reading is to cause the pc cursor to move from top to bottom of the page in a read all type manover, and cause the virtual to follow, thus you start the reading and keep going down the page, to get things lined up you need to stop the auto read, make sure your virtual cursor is on the correct spot, refresh the screen (insert and escape) and then do the route jaws to pc. this doesn't always get you where you wanted to go, dynamic pages are notorious for making things extremely hard to get at now a days, but if the thing is accessible at all, then this is the way to get at it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor not following PC cursor
Why don't you just change Firefox to the default browser, at least temporarily, so the email will open in Firefox. I have done that. I have also opened a link in one browser, copied the url onto the clipboard and then opened the other browser and inserted the url. I find that in most cases Firefox is the most useful for many websites but occasionally IE will do a better job. I don't have any advice about the Jaws cursor as I am finding it next to useless for anything on the Internet lately with either browser. The site is www.gardeners.com. I'm trying to add items to the shopping cart. All the links work except add to cart, which Jaws doesn't recognize as a link in either IE or Firefox. In Firefox, though, if I hit enter, the item ends up in the shopping cart. Hello, I know this may sound stupid but I realize that I don't really know how to work with the jaws cursor efficiently. I know how to switch back and forth and how to move the jaws cursor to and from the pc cursor. I know that Jaws-key+r does somehow switch the area in which the Jaws cursor is able to move. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor
Hi Jeronimo; Your question is not a stupid question. There is only 1 stupid question, that is the 1 that is not asked! If there is 1 person with a question about something in particular, there are probably hundreds of others wanting to know the same thing! Below is an article that explains the functions of all 4 cursors. About JAWS Cursors Navigating through Windows with JAWS is accomplished with cursors. These cursors determine the focus of JAWS speech and are often directly linked with Windows cursors. The PC Cursor - Follows Keystrokes This cursor is linked to the keyboard functions of Windows and applications. This is the cursor that is used when typing information, moving through options in dialog boxes, and selecting options or icons. As you type information, the PC Cursor follows along with each key you press. If you are making a selection in a menu or dialog box, the PC Cursor highlights the currently selected object. The PC Cursor is activated by default when JAWS starts. If you are using a different cursor, pressing NUM PAD PLUS returns you to the PC Cursor. The JAWS Cursor - Follows Mouse Pointer The JAWS Cursor is linked to mouse pointer functions in Windows and other applications. It is used to read information the PC Cursor cannot read, such as toolbar information. The mouse follows along with the JAWS Cursor when it is moved, and you therefore have access to information in an application window that is beyond the scope of the PC Cursor. To activate the JAWS Cursor, press NUM PAD MINUS. The Virtual PC Cursor - HTML Environment The virtual PC Cursor mimics the functions of the PC Cursor, but is activated by default when entering an HTML document. The virtual PC Cursor speaks the number of frames in a document, and the number of links in the frame. You can switch between frames, and JAWS reads graphics labeled by alt tags in the HTML code. Invisible Cursor The JAWS cursor is basically the mouse cursor that is visible on screen. The invisible cursor can be moved around just like the JAWS cursor to view information. It works like the mouse cursor but can not be seen on screen or effect objects. Therefore you can not use the NumPad / (left mouse click) or NumPad * (right mouse click) on an object. It is useful to read information without disturbing the mouse cursor. It is also useful to determine colors or whatever might change when the mouse is over an object. It will not cause ToolTips to pop up. Hope this has helped. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor
The JAWS cursor moves around the mouse pointer. You said that you already know that the NumPad - (minus) key puts you in JAWS cursor mode Insert + NumPad - (minus) moves the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor where the focus is currently placed, and NumPad + (plus) will return you to the normal PC cursor mode. Yes, the Insert + R keystroke sets the JAWS cursor restriction. In JAWS 10 these options are; Application (default), real, current, focus, frame, and unrestricted. These restrictions will not let the mouse leave the specified container, normally staying within the application's window. This prevents hearing unrelated information, like Desktop Icons, from being spoken while poking around. Unrestricted mode lets you move the mouse anywhere on the screen. There are many ways to move the mouse around at this point and have JAWS announce what is underneath. The PageUp key will move to the top of the window, the PageDown key to the bottom of the window, the Home key will move to the left side of the window, and the End key will move to the far right side of the window or container. You can simply use the arrow keys. Pressing Control with either the Left or Right Arrow keys will move to the next item in the container, such as the next piece of text or graphic. There are other combinations, such as holding down the Alt key while using the Arrow keys that moves the mouse in different increments. Someone else might want to specify further. I don't really use these keys. Typically, you will want to click on an item with the NumPad / (divide) key or right click using the NumPad * (multiply) key on the object under the mouse cursor. Another useful key is Alt + Delete, which announces cursor information. It will say the cursor mode which is active, the absolute X, Y position in pixels, the current restriction if not using the PC cursor, and many times the percentage of the way down in a scrolling window. The percentage is handy in browser windows as well. The best way to understand the PC cursor mode is to play around and explore. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS cursor and PC cursor
And this is a personal choice, but I turned off the screen track virtual cursor. With this turned off, the Jaws cursor and the mouse cursor can move independently of one another. So, if I'm needing to find something on the screen with Jaws, but someone sighted is looking at the monitor, the information on the screen doesn't move with the Jaws cursor. The person using the mouse has control over that. It makes it easy if you're both on the same screen. - Original Message - From: Lisa Belville missktlab1...@verizon.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, March 05, 2009 11:34 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS cursor and PC cursor Yep. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS cursor and PC cursor
Jack, on some programs, such as some antivirus programs, you find that not all of the on screen text reads to you. You know it is there but you can't get at it. So you can re-route the jaws cursor by pressing the insert key and the jaws cursor key so that it reads as the jaws cursor would. marilyn Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to jaws-users-list-le...@jaws-users.com For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: jaws-users-list-requ...@jaws-users.com Use the following address in order to contact the management team jaws-users-list-ow...@jaws-users.com If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: blind-computing-j...@jaws-users.com
Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS cursor and PC cursor
Hi, Jack. The JAWS cursor is equal to the mouse pointer. You can use it to read the screen, but you can also simulate mouse clicks with it just as a sighted person would when using a mouse. The PC cursor is the same as the blinking cursor in a word processor or in an edit field in a dialog. Basically, it reads the part of the screen that has the focus or that's active. [JAWS-Users] Jaws Cursor
I have changed the subject line. The best way to understand the Jaws cursor is that it is another name for the mouse cursor that sighted people can use. Jaws enables the navigation of this mouse cursor across the screen with the use of the normal arrow cursor keys. If you were sighted you would see the mouse cursor moving around the screen as you used the arrow keys. So when ever you hear jaws cursor think mouse cursor. I have never understood why FS did not call it this in the first place. As it is the mouse cursor the logical keystroke to use is the left and right mouse click. That is / and * on the NumPad. I think it is Caps lock plus 8 on laptop layout. Alternatively you could use an actual mouse button to provide the clicks needed but you would have to be careful not to move the mouse. The most unintuitive thing about using the jaws/mouse cursor is the restriction settings. I sometimes find when turning on this cursor I find myself stuck in the taskbar for example. I normally press Insert R until I hear unrestricted and go from there. I then set frame and window restriction as needed from there by repeatedly using Insert R. Other people may have other ways of approaching this but I found this works for me.
