You didn't mention internet Explorer specifically. Have you tried with
it? Using JAWS, try IE and with the virtual cursor turned off
(JAWSKey+z, which toggles it off and (then next press) on).

Hi Flor,

I have Firefox as my default browser on my home computer, it was on FF
that
I first noticed the problem. Tried IE 64 bit with similar result. I
only
have Jaws 15, but have tried it using NVDA. Have tried the usual
restarts

and the like.

What I find is when I initially enter and ALT down-arrow on the Combo,
in
Firefox it states read only edit. When I tab away and tab back, it
has an
entry. Example: Country of residence: random selection: Albania as I
arrow
down, it continuously repeats Albania. If I tab away and tab back,
the

country has changed. Example: Denmark.

This occurs with both Jaws and NVDA, although I wouldn't be used to
working
with NVDA. The difficulty is that the form I am attempting to fill in
must

be completed in a certain number of minutes or it refreshes.

I believe it may be a specific type of form, or there is some security
feature applicable as I am able to access combo boxes on other sites
without difficulty.

Regards

Louis

Hi all,

Further to my below message, I looked at a number of sites with combo
boxes
while at work today. Running Jaws 15, with certain sites the combo
boxes
worked as expected: booking flights for example. However, with other
sites,
there was no feed-back from the combo boxes at all.

Is it possible that certain sites could have moved to a form of flash

combo boxes? Nothing else occurs.

To Jorge, nothing is spoken by Jaws on certain sites.

I am running JAWs 14, Windows 7 and have tried accessing it with

alt

I have also tried NVDA without success. Any ideas?

Louis,

have you ascertained from sighted assistance that there are, in fact,
text items in the affected combo boxes? (In other words, that they are
not blank - with no screen-reader loaded?) The scenario being presented
with at least two sepa rate screen readers and at least two separate
browsers seems more than coincidental, to be sure. Are you having any
other noteworthy issues elsewhere on your computers, such as stuff not
displaying correctly? And, not to overlook what seems obvious, are your
windows being used maximized?

Hi All,

I know this topic came up some weeks ago. However, in the past two
days I
experienced similar difficulties in opening combo boxes. It is on a
secure
site, a bank, where I have an account and they have recently
updated

their
pages.

I am running JAWs 14, Windows 7 and have tried accessing it with
Firefox and
IE. With FF I locate the combo box, hit enter for forms mode, then
alt

Hi all,

Further to my below message, I looked at a number of sites with combo boxes
while at work today. Running Jaws 15, with certain sites the combo boxes
worked as expected: booking flights for example. However, with other sites,
there was no feed-back from the combo boxes at all.

Is it possible that certain sites could have moved to a form of flash in the
combo boxes? Nothing else occurs.

To Jorge, nothing is spoken by Jaws on certain sites.

Hi,
Try entering on the combobox, wait then down arrow to the combobox you want

The screen should change now.

The selected combobox is now transferring money to the other account.

On the edit box $0.00,
Type in the amount with the numpad.
Then, submit and OK/confirm.

Re: [JAWS-Users] combo boxes

2014-09-09 Thread Anthony06
Hi Flor,

I have Firefox as my default browser on my home computer, it was on FF that
I first noticed the problem. Tried IE 64 bit with similar result. I only
have Jaws 15, but have tried it using NVDA. Have tried the usual restarts
and the like.

What I find is when I initially enter and ALT down-arrow on the Combo, in
Firefox it states read only edit. When I tab away and tab back, it has an
entry. Example: Country of residence: random selection: Albania as I arrow
down, it continuously repeats Albania. If I tab away and tab back, the
country has changed. Example: Denmark.

This occurs with both Jaws and NVDA, although I wouldn't be used to working
with NVDA. The difficulty is that the form I am attempting to fill in must
be completed in a certain number of minutes or it refreshes.

I believe it may be a specific type of form, or there is some security
feature applicable as I am able to access combo boxes on other sites
without difficulty.

Regards

Louis

Hi, after you press enter to open the combo box you need to press alt and
down arrow. This will allow you to scroll through the list. Judy

I recall there being a way to do this. Having to do with the control button
and spacebar. I used to be in a fantasy football league and making and
receiving trades scenarios with multiple players was a big part of the
league. It's been years since I've played though and haven't had the need to
exicute this particular action so I can't remember exactly the steps needed.
I'm sure though that there's a way. Maybe another Jaws user with more

Hi All,

I came across the following notes on selecting more than 1 item in a
combobox:

In Windows Explorer, for example, you can hold down the control key
while you arrow through the list. When you get to an item you want to
select, you press the space bar. You're holding down the control key the
whole time. Release the control key when you want to stop selecting items.

If you're in a dialog box with an extended list item, you can use
shift+f8 to enter extended selection mode, arrow through the list, press
control+space or shift+space to select an item and shift+f8 to leave
extended list mode.

always got the answer to pretty much every jaws probllem that comes up on
the list. You could also try the reference materials on the FS website.
There's a page on there with all the JFW keystrokes that you could look at.

use control down arrow to open the combo box, then use the up and down

What I have tried in the past is activating the combo box with an alt down
arrow. Then I activated the jaws cursor, routed the jaws cursor to pc

then routed the pc to jaws. If you know the first letter of the item in the

Use alt down arrow, but you should be able to just use the virtual pc cursor
without routing jaws to it. If that does not work, route jaws to it and try
arrowing down, but on the internet, or in any combo box, you should just be
able to press alt down arrow and then arrow up and down through the list.

It's to do with Java controls. Whatever, alt+DownArrow is the surest way

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo Boxes IE |Reading Character By Character

2010-10-09 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Bill,

I think that the only way you can read a character at a time in a HTML combo
box in Internet Explorer is to have JAWS spell the line. This will not
allow you to navigate by character but you will hear each character spoken.
Use Alt+down arrow key to open the combo box. Use up and down arrow keys to
move between the combo box choices. Hold down the number pad insert key and
press the number 8 twice quickly before releasing the insert key to have the
current line spelled. If you are using a laptop configuration then hold
down the caps lock key and press the letter I twice before releasing the
caps lock key.

In order to copy individual combo box items to the clipboard to be pasted in
Word you should set JAWS verbosity to select and copy from virtual cursor.
Use JAWS key with V to bring up the adjust JAWS options dialog, press V
until you are at the virtual cursor group, and use down arrow to the select
and copy choice. Use spacebar until from virtual cursor is selected.
Press enter key to save any change you make. Move to the combo box and use
alt+down arrow key to open it. Use down arrow key to an item to be copied
and then use Alt+up arrow key to keep that item selected and close the combo
box. Use F8 to select the item and then use CTRL+C to copy it to the
clipboard. Do the same steps for each item except append the other
individual items by using Windows key with C instead of CTRL with C. You
can then open your destination program and paste the items.

Another thing you can do is open the source file. The source choice is
under the view menu in Internet Explorer. The source file should open in a
different window. In the source file use CTRL+F to bring up the find dialog
box, type in something like the word laser and press enter. The lines of
the source file that list the combo box items are 404 to 422. Each line has
other information on it but you can hear each item by moving a line at a
time with the down arrow key or up arrow key. You can also move to line 404
and then hold down shift while you down arrow to line 422 to select the
lines that contain the list of items. Copy the selected lines to the
clipboard and paste them in your destination document.

These are just a couple suggestions that you might want to try.

Take care.

Try opening it by first turning forms mode on and then using Alt plus down
arrow. You should hear something about the combo box being open. Now arrow
down to the choice you want. If it's the type of combo box I'm thinking of,
you can just press tab to move away from that box and it should open the
page with whatever choice you selected.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo boxes

Yes, probably. One of the places you can encounter them is at the FedEx.com
website. If you delete your cookie for Fedex, the one that remembers your
current location, you will be broght to their main homepage.

At this point, you are presented with a combobox to choose a location. When
you try to open the box, it immediately jumps to the first option and places
you in the Afghanistan locale. I didn't discover this until a few days
later, after wondering why my tracking number kept coming up with no
results.

I think I had to go into their sitemap to find reference to an accessible
page, which treated the combobox in a customary manner.

There is another site that I use a lot when I speak about web accessibility.
Mr. Damry is aware of this site. If you go to the Cisco Linksys website and
attempt to download new firmware or drivers, you are presented with a
completely inaccessible combobox. I can kind of but not always get it to
work with System Access, but not at all with Jaws or Window-eyes so far. It
is kind of a combobox that scrolls when it is opened. Often, Jaws doesn't
even recognize it as being a comboboox.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo boxes

2010-04-03 Thread Hans Pauli Sundstein

Hi Dale, and any one on list, that has trubble's with the combo boxes.

I have visited the webpage that you linked to, and have tryed out the combo
boxes there, and there are two different ways to work, whether you are using
Jaws 10 - 11, or earlyer version's.

Well, if someone have disabled the autoforms mode in Jaws 10 - 11, than it
work's just as in the earlyer version's.

So let me begin with the older versions:
When getting to a combobox, press enter, to activate the forms mode.
Than press alt+down arrow to open the listbox, and then arrow down through
the combobox.
You can also use first letter to jump to a particular letter, and than use
the arrow key's to find what you are searching for.
Now press alt+up arrow, to close the listbox, and often the webpage
automatically click's here, otherwise, tab to a button that can be named go
or search or something else, and press enter here.

On webpage's where there are multiple of comboboxes, you sirtainly need's to
make your selection's in any one, before selecting the go/search ... button.

When you have activated the form's mode in the earlyer version's of Jaws,
you only can tab through the fields on the page, and if you want to read
anything of the text information between the field's, you must press the pc
cursor bbutton, to leave the forms mode, and come back to the virtual
cursor.
When you then again meet's a combobox, you must again activate the forms
mode, by pressing enter.

In Jaws 10 - 11 there are an automatic forms mode, that gives a sound, when
the cursor are placed on a combobox.
Here just press spacebar, to select the combobox, and than alt+down arrow,
and just continue as described above.
When there are pressed alt+up arrow to close the listbox, the combobox
automatically are left, and you can continue to arrow down the page, or tab,
just as you want your self.

I hope that this advice can be helpful to someone.

Hans Pauli.

I am noticing that Web implementations are finding ever more clever ways of
confounding access technology and I don't understand what benefits are
derived.

Try WWW.megabus.com for example.

There is a series of combo boxes there looking for origin and
destinations. Which ever method used to access the combobox Jaws doesn't
speak but it does jump elsewhere on the page. I discovered that if I go
out of forms mode, back to the combobox I can read the selection. I return
to forms mode, arrow or first letter the next navigation and find myself
once more somewhere else on the form, go back to virtuous cursor, relocate
the combobox and so on until the selection is made.

I would certainly like a better solution than that. Remembering that bus
travel is a pretty important travel accessibility option for the blind I
remain eternally grateful that my expensive software technology has put
its development energies into a substitute search for an already very
accessible service provided by google.

Hi,
these must be combo boxes that work by java script instead of incorporating
a regular submit button designed using html plain.
This has the advantage of the screen changing immidiately when the user
flipps through the available choices.
A screen reader needs to parse the java script before making a choice in
order to present the user with a virtual list of choices from which one is
able to pick without actually manipulating the situation of the web page
itself.
Jaws does have a mechanism for that. I am courious to know the vo solution
for this one.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo boxes

2010-04-03 Thread Dale Leavens

Hi Hans,

I am using Jaws 9 on this computer but it doesn't work like that here for
me.

First letter navigation works but immediately I am thrown out of the box to
some other part of the page without the selection being read. For example I
wanted to select Toronto. Toledo was the first 'T', it was selected once I
turned Forms Mode off and relocated the box. Hit enter again to get back
into Forms Mode and hit 'T' again and off focus goes somewhere else. Turning
off forms Mode again and relocating the combo box confirmed that Toronto had
been selected. then down to the next box to select Buffalo Airport or at
least discover it it is an option. As it turns out it is an option but the
second one so again another round into and out of forms mode.

I do have Jaws 11 but have only installed it on my work computer. The joys
of Jaws 11 come with composing documents and spell checking MS-Word 2003.
Ultimately things just go silent, I cannot close jaws, cannot save my work
and close Word, mostly the keyboard stops working or if it doesn't the
computer stops talking so I can't tell what the keyboard response is. Only
resolution is to hit the power button. Since Jaws 11 comes up as the default
I often forget when working in Word to close it and load Jaws 9. Sometimes I
become aware that something isn't keeping up with me as I type, I get the
occasional beep from the computer as if I hit two keys simultaneously. When
this begins to happen it reminds me to save my work, kill Jaws and bring
back Jaws 9 and all goes well.

I am conflicted about replacing 9 with 11 on this machine not sure of the
advantages.

Thanks.

Dale

You can also use first letter to jump to a particular letter, and than use
the arrow key's to find what you are searching for.
Now press alt+up arrow, to close the listbox, and often the webpage
automatically click's here, otherwise, tab to a button that can be named
go or search or something else, and press enter here.

On webpage's where there are multiple of comboboxes, you sirtainly need's
to make your selection's in any one, before selecting the go/search ...
button.

When you have activated the form's mode in the earlyer version's of Jaws,
you only can tab through the fields on the page, and if you want to read
anything of the text information between the field's, you must press the
pc cursor bbutton, to leave the forms mode, and come back to the virtual
cursor.
When you then again meet's a combobox, you must again activate the forms
mode, by pressing enter.

In Jaws 10 - 11 there are an automatic forms mode, that gives a sound,
when the cursor are placed on a combobox.
Here just press spacebar, to select the combobox, and than alt+down arrow,
and just continue as described above.
When there are pressed alt+up arrow to close the listbox, the combobox
automatically are left, and you can continue to arrow down the page, or
tab, just as you want your self.

I am conflicted about replacing 9 with 11 on this machine not sure of the
advantages.

Thanks.

Hi Dale, and any one on list, that has trubble's with the combo boxes.

I have visited the webpage that you linked to, and have tryed out the
combo boxes there, and there are two different ways to work, whether you
 are using Jaws 10 - 11, or earlyer version's.

On webpage's where there are multiple of comboboxes, you sirtainly need's

 button.

When you have activated the form's mode in the earlyer version's of Jaws,
you only can tab through the fields on the page, and if you want to read

 Hi Don,

in Firefox, it is always recommended to drop down the combobox with
Alt+DownArrow. Make your selection using the Arrow Keys, then Alt+Up
Arrow to accept that selection. Unlike other browsers, this does not
automatically load a new page in dynamic comboboxes. Instead, you have
to press Tab once to get focus away from it. This is intentional
behavior to always guarantee full control over what's happening and not
pull a focused item out from under you.

The announcement of collapsed is also intentional. It indicates that
this combobox is not dropped down and that there are items to find by
 dropping it down.

 Hope this helps!

Firefox 3. With these scripts in place, combo boxes (drop down lists) and
list boxes are mostly unusable. One useful task performed in these scripts
is making an announcement in tab browsing. Speaking, New tab page for
immediate feedback. Overall, I would say that they break more than they fix.

Even with the scripts disabled, I still have a few problems with combo boxes
in some instances. One little annoyance, but not a actual problem, is that
in Firefox collapsed is announced after reading the combo box.

On one web site I use a lot for TV listings, zapp2it, the dynamic combo box
for available channels only shows up with one entry, My Stations. It
should be loaded with over 700 stations in my case having
direct TV. It loads other dynamic combo boxes, such as the date to view.
This box only gets filled with about 14 values. Perhaps it is simply the
 number of values?

The link I use in my desktop Shortcut is:
 http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/partners/grid.asp?partner_id=paret2

This shows me a listing of my favorite stations for the current time. There
are a series of combo boxes to select other times, dates, or stations. You
will probably not see the series of combo boxes mentioned unless you at least
enter a zip code and then select a cable/satellite provider. I went further
and customized my listings by creating an account and selecting the stations,
sort order, and how I want to view the grid. I don't think you need to do
this. This is an invaluable site for me. I found it on the Reading Eagle
 (PA) newspaper site.
