Don't let being a "purist" stand in the way of logic and making a good
decision. The continental will go 200+ with accessories and neither it or
the Lycombing are suited for the KR1.

I seem to recall Jab's had some early problems but if those have been

KR> VW type 1 questions - best reliability

2016-04-23 Thread Dan Heath
I had a GPASC 2180 back before they realized that the oversized valves were
useless and a detriment. The replacements that I got from GPASC, were from
EMPI. If you want good heads, get the ones manufactured under license from
VW, note, that is NOT WW. The ones that I got were from Brazil with
standard sized valves and never had another problem with them. However, my
problem was not the same as yours. The exhaust valves in my heads were
sinking into the head. The reason was because EMPI makes them with plugs in
the valve recesses, to make it easy to remove after casting. This, plus the
oversize, causes the exhaust to have less meat around the valve seat, than
is necessary to remove the heat.

So, the message is get the right heads with standard valves and keep them
cool.

I used the firewall because I figured that it was the least likely point to
change, like tip of spinner that may change every time your old spinner
cracks up and get's replaced. I don't think the spread sheet really cares
if the numbers you put in are positive or negative. It will always give you
the right answer if the formula is correct. Several W & B sheets are
available on this site:

The one thing I may have done wrong, was to use the larger diameter tubing.
With my Matco, I use the 1/8" line and it is perfect. Tracy sent it with the
brakes, but I had never used a small line like that. Also, my existing tubing
was very old. Thus why I said that it could have been from a bad installation
on my part.

only with the VW, but with a 2700 Corvair.

Tracy also used some odd ball sized fittings, which would be enough for me
to NOT recommend them.

Subject: KR> Will Tracy O'Brien wheels work fine with heavier plane?

Gents,

My airplane will be heavier than most of the KR's, max gross will be
1250-1300 lbs. I would like to put Tracy O'Brien's Premium 5" wheels with
their C90 brakes but these wheels are limited to 1200 lbs. gross according
to the website. Is there anybody flying a heavier KR with these wheels and
if yes, any experienced issues?

Thanks in advance,

Always had a problem with my GPS in my KR-2 not operating on aircraft power,
but ok on internal batteries. Always made a note to trouble shoot that when I
got a chance. Did not need GPS on first flights over the airport. Today while
hooking up power for the new flap actuator, I found 2 each AN970-3 fender
washers on the power control printed circuit board. One was laying loose on
top of some components; no problem there, but some bouncing around could create
some excitement. The second washer was wedged firmly between a grounded brace
part of the power panel and the output terminal on the GPS power toggle switch.
So, every time GPS power was switched on, the electronic circuit breaker would
trip and no power for the GPS. Removed the offending washers and all is well.
Have no idea how these two big washers got there. Stuff happens.

So, have possibly toned down the level of excitement for subsequent flights.

At 876 lbs empty I'd be looking for a bigger engine than a VW - especially
at that altitude and with those temps. Also, I'm pretty sure 3,000 rpm is a
bit low - most of the VW guys seem to go for around 3,400 - 3,600.

KR> Flap or Belly Board wiring

2015-11-16 Thread Dan Heath
Yes, you MUST have a visual indicator to KNOW that it is FULL UP or not. I use
a micro switch connected to a warning light right in the center of my view out
the front. Don't leave home without it.

No indicator. I also found that it worked for me, the best, all the way up,
or all the way down. I got my actuator stuff from Steve Glover and it has
always worked perfectly. The wiring would be different for each
installation and I don't have my diagrams.

KR> Bleeding brakes

2015-11-08 Thread Dan Heath
I highly recommend putting the fuel in the wings and leave out the header
tank and make the deck removable.

At one time before I did that on the Black Bird, I got under there and was
afraid that I was not going to be able to get back out and no one was at the
airport that day.

After that and other bad experiences trying to work under there, I would
NEVER build a plane without a removable deck.

On the brake bleeding issue, I also swapped out the masters with the built
in reservoir for those with a remote reservoir that is clear, so you can see
exactly how much fluid you have at any time.

KR> [CorvAircraft] Intake manifold

2015-10-31 Thread Dan Heath
Paul,

I am just curious, when did you order your intake manifold from WW. It might
be a good idea to ask him to bring it to CC in Barnwell and I can pick it up
there and see to it that you get it. I know you come down this way quite often.

That would be better than your having to borrow one, until WW can ship yours to
you, then you would have to return the one you borrowed.

Just saying, since you have already purchased it from WW, I am sure he has it
ready for you.

I let my DAR know, or ask someone at your FSDO. They will tell you, but I

Interesting...I never thought you ever would go back to Phase 1. So let me
pose a question. If that is true and you make a major change like going
from a VW to a Corvair do you have to go back to Phase 1?

KR> Phase 1 and Phase 2 flight testing

2015-10-23 Thread Dan Heath
You are going to get 40 hours for phase 1, and unless I am mistaken, you
never get out of phase 2, unless you go back to phase 1 due to major changes
to the aircraft.

You should perform all the basic tests in phase 1 during the 40 hours that
you will have to fly within the area that you are given by your DAR.

This is standard for most experimental aircraft.

I am going to be cutting a thin line in the wing so I can lay electrical
cable to the position lights and strobes at the tips of the wings. The
person I bought the aircraft from didn't run any electrical through the
wings, so I'm thinking of using a dermal to cut a narrow deep line so I can
lay the cord without having to dig through the spar and what not. Then I
plan on filling in the hole with foam and re-applying fiberglass.

It was suggested that instead of placing it on the leading edge, that I
place the cut under the wing.

To pressure test a tank you use a pressure gauge connected to a T fitting
screwed in to the tank.
One of the T connections to the tank
Another to the pressure gauge
The third to the valve
Open the valve to allow air to go in to the tank Close the valve and make
sure the pressure doesnt drop after a set time say 24 hours.
Open valve to vent the tank and then unscrew the T.

Good Evening fellow Kr People.
Last week I had the pleasure of going for a ride in a KR2S aircraft at the
Oshawa airport. Upon inspection of the aircraft which was built and flown by

fever.
His aircraft was a solid well build VW powered aircraft. I am now looking at
carburetors for my 110 hp engine which currently is in a car.
From the reading and talking to others it would seem that several carbs are
an option and as such I would ask that anyone who has tested them give me
and the list some feedback as to the experience good or bad with the

2015-08-27 Thread Dan Heath
WOW!!! EFS-2. Most of you can not know what an awesome thing this is for
the VW flyers. These carbs are the best thing for the VW that you could ask
for. I put one on my first KR and it was "plug and chug". There are three
tuning steps that take less than 30 minutes total and you will never have
carb problems again. These have become virtually impossible to get since
Ellison quit making them.

If you ever use an Ellison on your VW, you will never want for any other
carb. It is a pay me now, or pay me later in money and frustration, so get
this when it is available, treasure it, and have no concern for what it may
cost as it will pay you back many times over.

Hi guys,
Monday we will do a weight and balance check to calculate the engine
position. We did build a KR-2 but did extend the tail like an kr2-s, have
the old kr2 wings but with the extension like the kr2-s. Fire wall is
reinforced for the more powerful engine but have no two inch extension to
the front. Can you guys give me the advice what you should use for the fwd
and aft gravity point? I think I can use the drawing dimensions. Result will
be more space after the engine.

plastic. I need to protect it and have been trying unsuccessfully to locate
a source for "spraylat.

Does anyone have contact info for a US distributor for spraylat or another
product called "protectapeel ?

Apparently both are made in the UK.

Sherwin Williams supposedly is the exclusive supplier but their local
customer service people don't know anything about.

One local salesman is looking into it but seems slow to get back to me.

I have tried Wicks and AC Spruce but neither carry it.

KR> Large valves on 2180 VW

2015-07-06 Thread Dan Heath
Yes, Steve's did come with large valves, but I have a friend who ordered a
new set from him a couple of years ago and then now come with stock valves.
There must be a reason for it and a reason why mine kept sinking into the
seat. Must be that some people are more lucky than others. You may have
better cooling than some have, who know, it is a mystery.

I'm about ready to give up on this. Steve's 2180's come with 40mm intakes
and 35.5 mm exhaust. These are larger than the valves in a standard Type 1
head so I consider them large valves.

KR> Large valves on 2180 VW

2015-07-06 Thread Dan Heath
Large valves have their problems, that is why ( I'm quite sure ), that Steve
quit using them in his heads. I went thru 3 sets of heads with the valves
sinking in the seats, before an expert VW mechanic told me that the reason
was that the aftermarket heads were cast using plugs for the exhaust ports
to make it easy to just pull the plugs out after casting, and then when you
grind it for large valves, you take off too much meat from the head so there
is not enough left to support the valve and dissipate the heat.

I got a set of genuine VW heads (made in Brazil or Mexico, can't remember
which), with standard valves and the mechanic ported them properly, by hand.
Never had that problem again. That and all the other things that were found
wrong with the engine being corrected and $5000 solved all my VW problems.
That is the major reason why I did not build my Corvair engine and why I
have had no problems with it. You don't know what you don't know until it
bites you.

KR> Revmaster R2300

2015-07-04 Thread Dan Heath
Why you should buy my Corvair engine. Never had any of these issues. After
I connected the coils to the right polarity, cranked first time every time
and never overheats or has any of those problems. Also, no tappet
adjustment.

My Panther Building Documentation at PantherBuilder Web Site

Daniel R. Heath -?Lexington, SC

-Original Message-

Hi all, I Thought I would put my two cents in about the Revmaster R2300 as I
have one of these in my kr2, When I'm not working on it trying to figure out
the bugs, when its running right it is a great engine, after about 18 months
of playing with it I am now getting 140 kts cruise and 1200 fpm climb at
gross , so that i think is pretty respectable, and can now not stress to
much on it performing properly. But the problems I have had with the engine
at times I've been ready to burn the plane! thinking I would never get this
thing right. A few times in the early hours of it flying it I had to do
emergency 180 turn backs on climb out as the engine was not going to make
the full circuit, with CHT's going through the roof at 300 deg C+. (screen
only only goes to 300 got there in about 10 sec from take off, and EGT's 950
deg C+. (last flight when the heads finally cooked). a list of the faults I
had with it are. 1/ ign. timing set at approx 40 deg btdc, which cooked the
heads within 10 hrs from new (timing was factory set!) with a timing light
shown it was correct at the prop flange, but found it a with dial ind. on
piston #1 while stripping the engine down. 2/ aluminium push rods 6 out of
the eight failed in 40 hrs, now replaced all with steel ones (rod ends
crushed into the alloy tubes) and yes they were rubbing on the push rod
outer tubes . 3/. oil leaked out like a sieve every were since new, can
never seem to get one to take up from out the back of the engine, 4/.
constantly lapping valves particularly the exhaust valves, 20 hours ago had
the heads professionally ground and re seated and just recently 3 exh.
valves started leaking again and had to re lap (about 2 hours ago). and
feels like i am adjusting tappets every 5 hours. temp figures:- CHT's on
average in climb approx 180-190 degs C., 140-150 deg C in cruise 90-100 on
descent.EGT's around 680-720 deg C, in climb and about 600 deg C. in
cruise.Oil Temp about 60-70 deg C, pending on day temp.So the engine does
run pretty cool and I am running only on 98 unleaded fuel, no ethanol. (cant
afford AV gas over here or justify it.The engine now has 130 hours on it
(with 500 hundred hours spent working on it!)And as I said earlier when its
going properly it does perform very well, but the quality of manufacture
does let it down! Or mine must have just been a Friday build.

KR> 2700 CC Corvair Engine - Complete and then some

2015-07-04 Thread Dan Heath
I have my Roy's Garage built Corvair engine for sale. The reason for
selling is that I want to put a UL Power in the plane that I am now
building.

This is a real good value. All you would need is an exhaust system and
motor mount that fit your application.

This engine had my KR2 at 14,000 feet GPS altitude, on the way to the 2013
Gathering .

$10,500 and it includes:

Roy's special intake,

Niagara oil cooler

Weseman baffle system

gold oil system

Deere alternator rear mounted

Gold top cover and large oil pan

Roy's front bearing with stainless oil line

coils and separator

dual distributor

EGT/CHT senders for all cylinders

New starter installed

Ed Sterba 54X54 prop

13" spinner with bulkheads

Ellison EFS-3A

And, I probably forgot something. Roy just went thru the entire engine and

KR> to host a Gathering

2015-07-03 Thread Dan Heath
You need to know that this has been going on for a very long time.
Sometimes it is just as you described, but the KR group has evolved and they
expect a lot more. The aircraft really need to be hangared at night. No
one wants to lose their plane due to a freak storm. The expense for a pilot
to get his plane to and from the gathering is much more than many people
realize. And, ask Joe H. it can get really high when you can't get home and
have to make other arrangements and come back later for your KR.

For those of you who did not make Chino, it was a very good, maybe great
Gathering. Steve and crew did a wonderful job. The only downside to that
location is that it was not close enough to the runway.

I had thought that this was a much less formal thing.
Can't just meet in a hangar or at a local library?

KR> Gathering 2016

2015-07-02 Thread Dan Heath
I have always thought that we should have a different way to choose the next
Gathering site. It is always going to favor somewhere in the vicinity of
the current site, because it is more convenient for those closest to the
site to vote. And, what do you suppose they vote for?

People who fly their KR get 5 votes, or maybe more. 10 would not be
unreasonable.

Attendees get 3 votes.

All netters not attending, get 1 vote.

New England would be great, but where is that? I am sure it is on the other
side of the world from Oregon or the Pacific Northwest.

Also, for those of you who want to submit your requests for a location, you
need to be specific and be willing to HOST, and that is a lot of work. You
also must have your proposal presented at the Gathering. If you cannot be
there, you can have a representative do it for you.

Larry, you are the one person who knows the most about how this is done.
Did I leave anything out?

KR> Revmaster VW cylinder problems

2015-06-20 Thread Dan Heath
Oversized valves and poorly made heads, also create an opportunity for the
valve seats to melt and sink into the heads. This happened on 3 sets of
heads before I found out that oversized valves, especially on heads made,
where the exhaust ports are made at casting time with plugs, were the
culprit. I then got a pair of genuine VW heads with normal size valves and
this problem did not occur again.

KR> For Sale

2015-05-25 Thread Dan Heath
My 2700CC Corvair engine built by Roy with his front bearing and set to zero
time by Roy last November. It is still at zero time because it has been
patiently awaiting another plane to fly. However, I need to part with it
and all the goodies that go with it for $10,500.

By all the goodies, I mean just about everything you need to put it on your
mount and fly away, including the prop, but no exhaust. It has most of the
WW gold parts and the black hub and a ring gear that was built by someone
else. It has a new starter, never used, and a rear mounted JD dynamo
(alternator).

Don't some of the guys move the engine forward? I've read posts where
spacers were added to the engine mount at the firewall to accomplish this.

Of course, you would need to modify the cowl, but that approach sounds more
predictable and least painful.

Moving the wing forward would exacerbate the problem. The aerodynamic fix
would be to move the wings 2-inches aft from the KR-2 plans callout. That
is essentially what was done with the KR-2S. In the case of my already
built (and flying) KR-2, moving the wings would amount to building another
fuselage and stub wings. I chose bolting on some steel weights. Granted
not the most elegant solution. As Larry recommends, perhaps a bigger engine
installation would indeed be the best choice. Anyone interested in a
firewall forward package for a Great Plains 2180 VW, Diehl case, Zenith
carb, RR engine mount with 2" extension blocks, Sterba 52x52 prop, Revmaster
oil cooler, Grand Rapids engine monitor with all probes and 10.6 engine
operating hours, turning 3150 RPM static WOT.

Sid Wood

Tri-gear KR-2 N6242

Mechanicsville, MD, USA

I'm no aerodynamicist but seems to me the proper way to fix this problem is
simply to move the wings forward. Either that or shorten the tail.

Using hydrogen or helium instead of air in the tires will help with
buoyancy, which might help. This has the side benefit of increasing the
service ceiling.

Keep in mind when playing around with lead that it is highly toxic. It's
against the law to use lead even for wheel weights, at least in California.

If your plane is loaded with lead it's possible you'll be stopped at the
state line and have to take a bus the rest of the way.

Lots to consider here.

KR> The most key VW type 1 aero mods question

2015-04-28 Thread Dan Heath
Front bearing is machined into the hub on both the Great Plains and
Revmaster. I still recommend that you contact both of these to get answers
you are looking for. Joe Horvath and Marty will surely be glad to assist
you.

KR> anyone using a redrive on small VW engine

2015-04-26 Thread Dan Heath
Marty,

What do you plan to use it on? Early crank breaks were due to cast cranks.
Most conversions now have some version of the "Force One Hub", which may or
may not be attributed to GAPSC. Your best bet here is to get the serial
number of the engine and ask Joe Horvath at Revmaster and Marty Roberts at
GPASC, if it is suitable and what it would take to get it air worthy,
assuming that you plan to use it in an aircraft.

I have always heard of crank shafts braking when used as direct drives. I
know that if you use a redrive there is a weight penalty. But does the
safety factor go up as well.

Paul,

Not sure what you mean by "sticky enough for the canopy"?

Has anyone bought the package of electrical tape from Harbor Freight? It comes
in stack pf ten or so rolls. I'm just curious if it's sticky enough for the
canopy.

KR> Gathering Site

Well, after a couple of tries, I got it to work this time. I think the rate
for the Vineyard Inn needs to be changed.
