[lace] Happy Anniversary
Over the years the question has come up as to whether other means of discussing matters may be better - some have tried ning, others yahoo groups - I seem to remember it was a yahoo group that was (or was to be) set up to discuss the details of the millenium project. It was, to me at least, always too much bother going to find or join other sites so I stuck with Arachne. The main 'problem' with changing to another 'group' was that there were always a number who didn't like whatever group it was for whatever reason - would never use yahoo, facebook, etc. So we stayed with Arachne which continues to serve its purpose well; we've surmounted problems like how to view photos (even when the photo site we were using went down permanently). It may be a little slower in response, but there is always someone to answer a question, no matter how often it is asked. But then, we're lacemakers, we're used to the slower pace of life (vbg). Where facebook is concerned, I did join bobbin lacemakers for a while but left, and find lacemakers (which was set up so that any type of lace can be discussed) far more friendly and helpful. Photos are shared of latest projects, as well as the "where have I gone wrong" photos, which are helpful to beginners. The availability of easy translation has encouraged non-English speaking lacemakers to join in, something we've never quite achieved on Arachne, although the welcome has always been extended with the suggestion that there will usually be someone on the list who can translate, and we don't mind if the standard of English isn't brilliant. It's good to see so many of the 'long in the tooth' Arachnes are still with us. I joined somewhere around July 1995, about three months after it started, after it was mentioned (I think by Jean Peach) on either uk.rec.crafts or rec.crafts.textiles.needlework - it was through sites like that that I discovered that computers had uses for things not just work related! - surprisingly some of the rec.crafts groups are still going, too. Is it time to start considering whether we are going to do/have something special for our 25th anniversary in two years time? (We could set up another yahoo group and then ignore it, in good Arachne tradition - vvbg). Jane Partridge Jane Read wrote... [lace] Lacing Outside
I have been enjoying the lovely weather here in the southwest USA and sitting outside for several hours each day to lace. we now have a tremendous amount of flies caused by the lovely weather. they are a nuisance. we never freeze to kill off insects during the winter as we are in true desert. i have a recipe for a spray that i can spray in the air and it keeps bugs away. i have to make up a batch for this year. you get a big bottle of cheap blue mouthwash and mix in 3 cups of Epsom salts with three cans (12 oz.) stale beer. mix until salt dissolves. put into a spray bottle and extra back in the mouthwash bottle - label it so you don't accidentally use it in your mouth. spray area where you sit or play (patio, pool, etc.). it lasts up to 80 days. does not harm plants or flowers but causes the mosquitoes and bugs to leave the area and not come back. usually spraying it twice in the summer does it. i have to get this mixed up and sprayed now. i will do the air which will also float down to the recliner and love seat outside on the deck, floor and tables, etc. which should keep that entire area free. i will do around my screen door and door too so i don't get them inside either. thought i would share this for those who have lovely weather and enjoy being outside to do anything - including lacing. it is a nuisance to have to shooo them away when holding those bobbins or tatting shuttles. enjoy. [lace] Happy Anniversary
So many years, how did that happen! Happy Anniversary, I raise my bobbins to all my fellow lacemakers :-) . I've recently joined the facebook group 'Bobbin Lacemakers' and I have to say, I think Arachne is much, much more useful. It is sooo much more informative. The facebook group seems to be mainly photos with occasional short questions & answers, its not the place to have a 'proper' informed discussion. Long may Arachne continue. In answer to Jeri's comment, I don't think there is any equivalent technology to the way Majordomo works. My understanding is that the Majordomo is part of the unix email system (and linux perhaps). All the social media stuff is quite different in concept and technology. Actually, given the length of time that Arachne has been in existence, I should think we've been 'migrated' forward a few times. We'd know nothing about it, as the tech guys transfer things from an old computer to a new one without changing anything. No-one is going to keep a server running for 25 years! Most of them are lucky to last 5y. Best wishes, Jane In a briefly sunny New Forest - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Happy Anniversary!
I don't remember when I joined arachne, maybe a couple years after it started.  Jane Swanson told me about the list.  My brother built me a computer for Christmas one year, and I've been a member ever since.  Arachne  introduced me to the world of lacemaking.  Haven't made any lace recently, but hope to get back to it soon.  Am working hard to get my studio back in shape so I can get back to some hobbies that have been on time out.  Thanks for all you do! David, What I do for Jeri's messages, and might work for you with Devon's, is subscribe to both the individual messages and the digests. I quickly scan the digests to see if I've missed any messages, so I read Jeri's late if she hasn't bcc'd me, but I see them in full eventually. Dear Susan and other interested friends, David, since you are the only person I have ever known to play Carnegie Hall, please provide details! Some Arachneans may want tickets. Be sure to put in some lace content so it's legal. LOL. Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA I shall be taking lots of my Point Ground laces with me when I go to New York next January. We arrive on Jan 14th and will be staying at the Park Central Hotel. I think 17th and 18th are taken up with rehearsals and then performance of Karl Jenkins' "Amadeus" with him conducting. RE: [lace] My AOL message failed to get past Arachne's panix blockthis morning
Dear David, This is distressing to hear. I have started a gmail account specifically to engage with Arachne. It is sometimes the case that I get over excited and respond from my AOL account. But, I had thought that I was quickly sending a duplicate post from the gmail account when I realize I have done this. Are people really just receiving the first few words when I send from the gmail account? I thought that was the silver bullet. Dear Friends, I joined Arachne in late 1995 and made lots of friends throughout the world. B I even visited their homes in Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and the UK This comment from Janice reminded me that I've often meant to tell you all that now that I am retired, if ever anyone wants to mind my house here in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia for a month or 6 just ask. The main responsibility would be to feed and cuddle the cat (Rocket). The house is on 0.25 of an acre of forest with permanent Australian bush behind and is only a 10 minute walk from the centre of town. I'll go away at the drop of a hat. Re: [lace] My AOL message failed to get past Arachne's panix block this morning
Sorry Jeri, but I'm with Shirley on this one. I too am grateful for your wonderful posts and all your work in providing info to the lace and the broader textile community. The problems here, however, are almost certainly with using an AOL email account. AOL is a dinosaur-era system that doesn't have guards against users sending mass junk mailings and scams. As a result many more advanced email systems screen out mailings from AOL, Hotmail, and increasingly Yahoo. A mailing to Arachne is interpreted by many servers as a mass mailing, which it actually is, and gmail (among the most advanced email services) screens all AOL messages. I get very little spam, much less than 1% of my messages, as a result. I'm afraid the best solution by far would be for you to move to a newer, better email system. I recommend gmail (having used Outlook extensively), but almost anything would be better than AOL, Hotmail, or Yahoo. Were Arachne to move to an even newer service, the problems are likely to be worse. BTW, delays in posting messages, especially long ones, are just as likely to be caused by a delay on the internet itself in a packet that is part of the message, since the message won't be delivered until all packets have been received. That delay could be occurring at any one of millions of servers, most of which are probably newer than the AOL ISP's servers. I vote that Arachne stay with the current system. [lace] Happy Anniversary
Sending my Best Wishes and Anniversary greetings to all. I joined the list back in 1998, I think, having seen a piece about it in the Lace Guild magazine. I have enjoyed the discussions, raffles, exchanges and most definitely the information that has been given on the list and the camaraderie within the group. I don’t make as much lace these days as I have found lots of other crafts since moving house 4 years ago but still have work on pillows waiting for me to have the enthusiasm once again. RE: [lace] My AOL message failed to get past Arachne's panix block this morning
Hi Fellow Arachnids, Firstly, thank you Jeri for all you do for the Lace community and that despite being frustrated by the system you keep on helping us. Your email has com through to me ok. I looked at that wonderful shirt yesterday. Being a medieval re-enactor as well as a lace maker I was doubly interested. Secondly, my thanks to Liz for hosting the program AND PAYING for it all these years. I have sent an donation towards the costs, but that was several years ago. It would be nice if more people could see their way to doing that. Lastly, my thanks to Avital for keeping us on the straight and narrow with our emails. Yes, I am sorry to say that she has had to rap my knuckles a couple of times. I have cut severely this time and I hope that despite minimal lace content this missive is allowed. Joepie, East Sussex, UK, where the weather looks lovely and sunny. PS. I am just on my way to Triangle Lace Club in Eastbourne for about 4 hours. Lovely group meeting every even numbered month on the second Saturday (10.00 to 14.00 hrs). J. - - --- . Liz has been very generous in providing a server to us. Perhaps we should consider how we can update dinosaur-era computer programming ? Do we have a volunteer programmer and someone with a server to share that we could transition to, and could our existing files be kept intact ? Hi, Maybe I'm a tad tired after teaching bobbin lace all day but . Umm, why would we want to move our wonderful list somewhere else? We can always check out the wonderful lace posted to flicker as the address is at the bottom of each and every e-mail sent to Arachne.
