[lace] Expanding cloth stitch with weaving techniques

2018-12-10 Thread Joseph Young
Just wondering if any of you have contemplated using weaving techniques
inside our bobbin lace! Obviously it would add complications, but I am
sure it can be done.

One thing I have always wanted was a floor loom. 8 shaft. One day I will
get it!

I am thinking that any cloth stitch area could be manipulated to hold
pattern rather than just regular cloth stitch. Cloth stitch is
essentially just plain weave, so cant we add a pattern, like 3/1 twill
or even complex rose path ect by manipulating the way we cross and twist
our passive pairs. I think this could be a revelation to me.

Imagine a trail going around a mat that has an overshot pattern in it,
in multiple colours. Ohh la la this is intreguing!

regards Joseph

[lace] "gridding" to mark place on net.

2017-12-17 Thread Joseph Young
Hi Everyone, thanks for all your wonderful responses to Filet Lacis
(filet lace). If I haven't replied to everyone of you, its just that
there is heaps of emails, and I am still filtering through them.

Is there a simple way to "grid" your net once it is on the frame? When i
X-stitch I always grid my work with red fishing line so that I don't
have to continually keep counting where I am at. Would this be OK to do
with the gridded net? I guess its just a try and see thing, but i
thought it might trigger someone else's brain into streamlining their lace.

2017-12-12 Thread Joseph Young
This is the same way i was taught (not in the 50's though, but the
person who taught me learned in that era).

I am going to invest in a Bohin threader (what my quilting guild use)
and a clover "yarn needle threader" for size 24,26,28 tapestry needles.
These seem to be the crowd favorites.

Re: [lace] Re: Block pillow question

2017-12-11 Thread Joseph Young
I only use the hot-wire outside, preferably on a windy day as it makes the foam
cut straighter. The foam I use is called XPS, it does not bead and let off
little pearls like most foam, and it can easily be cut with a stanley knife,
but I use the hot wire purely because of my hand tremors. Much easier to push
it through the wire straight rather than with a knife. The foam is $12 for a
huge piece, probably make 3 pillows from it. I whip up cotton covers in
unbleached calico, overlock the squares then dye them with RIT dye to a nice
shade of mottled blue. The hotwire is really simple, just an old machine
knitting table with a hole drilled in the centre, and an L square attached to
hold the wire. I power it with a dimmer, old PC power supply and a foot pedal.
Grandad has also successfully cut the foam with the scroll saw (that i am not
allowed to go near with a barge pole).

I have started using a piece of yoga mat on top of my blocks now, as the pins
grab in it better than felt, and it kind of becomes self healing. Half blocks
and quarter blocks seem to be on the agenda now. I cannot stand a cookie pillow
as I HATE to move up my work. That is a sure fire way for me to stuff it up!

Joseph – be careful to use the hot wire in a well-ventilated space as the
gases that come off from the cutting are not good for you

Sue

[lace] Re: Block pillow question

2017-12-10 Thread Joseph Young
Thanks Nancy, I think I might make mine 30" octagonal with half blocks
and an optional pit to make spheres. I will certainly use some half
blocks as working on the hankie at the moment is awkward because its too
little to move the block, and too much to not move it, so the bobbins
only have a short working thread, and they are hanging off the pillow
which is not ideal.

I made myself a hot wire (with help from grandad), so I cut my own
blocks, cover them and then make trays out of coreflute. I just wasn't
sure about others preference or whether I was just being a tad fussy. I
also want to make a fan pillow that has triangular blocks that can be
swapped and replaced to make the curved fan.

Re: [lace] Spulfix bobbin winder for counter-clockwise winding

2017-12-10 Thread Joseph Young
I have one of these (I think). There is a little switch on the battery
box that allows you to change the direction of the way you wind the bobbin.

I wind my midlands this way, I might be doing it in the reverse of what
I am supposed to. maybe that's why I have some slipping with my
hitch, even though its not on the head of the bobbin, but rather over
the wound thread.

Re: [lace] Please Share Lace Experiences and Questions

2017-12-10 Thread Joseph Young
Arachne is a wonderful resource that I admit I do not use often enough.
I really need to start posting questions here as I always put it off
because I am not so timely writing responses.

I love the philosophy of sharing everything you learn, its important
that it is passed down. I originally found the lace community very
secretive, and talking to some people in my local guild was no help,
they fixed my mistakes for me, without explaining how to do it. So many
questions and answers on Arachne are wonderful! I need to stop lurking
and do more talking.

Facebook makes it easier to send photo's with your questions, that is
why some people flock to it. It would be amazing if Arachne opened a
closed Facebook group for members. Getting younger lacemakers is harder,
and I am currently working on a Youtube learning series where I am going
to teach what I learn as I learn it. Doing samples was all well and
good, but I spent a year making samples when I should have dived in and
made some actual lace. I am working on my first actual piece now, and i
have 3 pricking in the line up afterwards. I am truly addicted!

One question I have been meaning to ask is... when you use a block
pillow, how big is the total pillow. I am working on one that is 18"x18"
with 6" blocks. I need to make another that is larger, that includes
some smaller blocks. Its hard for me to manage the bobbins on this
pillow, as I really need to move the blocks up half a block at a time
rather than a full block.

Joseph.

[lace] Dyeing cotton threads

2017-08-25 Thread Joseph Young
Hi There, I thought this would be the place to ask.

Do any of you hank and dye thread? I have dyed a lot of regular yarn,
but I am not sure If i can do the same thing with thread. Obviously the
thread will take up the dye differently depending on how the thread was
spun and treated.

My main question is, can I hank the thread on a small diy niddy noddy,
tie it with figure 8 ties like yarn, and the thread will be ok and wind
off neatly like yarn?

I hope this is an OK question.

Re: [lace] Bobbin holder

I don't know if any of you are machine knitters, but you can use a
ribber cast on comb, and remove the wire, hang the bobbins over the pegs
and replace the wire. This really works well when using a lot of
bobbins. I twiched a wire on each end of one of mine, and then hung it
like a coat hanger on the back of my door when I first traveled with pre
wound bobbins. It also hangs well on the suit hook in my car, I draped a
cover cloth over the lot to keep the bobbins clean.

I have only just been able to send messages to the Arachne list, All my
messages were returned to me.

I have acquired some patterns for Idrija lace that I want to learn, but
I am stumped on the thread sizing. Alot of my patterns mention "idrija
brand" thread in various sizes. I have looked in my threads for lace
book, but I cannot find a reference to it. nr.40 is the most common
size, but I have seen it mentioned in 30

Does anyone have this thread? Would you be willing to share the wpc please?

Re: [lace] Pincushion

2017-01-02 Thread Joseph Young
Before I started lace making, all of my pin cushions were stuffed with
fine steel wool and a tiny cube of soap in the very centre to keep the
pins lubricated. This is how my granny always did them, but now that I
am using nickel plated stainless pins, i cant use that for fear of
damaging the pins.

In home Ec we were taught to use walnut hulls that you get from the
fodder store.

Now i stuff my cushions half unwashed wool and half polyfill from the
craft store. If your cushion is too soft once its stuffed, you can up
the ratio of wool in the stuffing and felt it in the washer and dryer so
that it can "grab" the pins a bit better.

[lace] Linen Thread Storage

2016-11-09 Thread Joseph Young
Hi Everyone,

I have been reading up on long term storage of linen. I like to collect
supplies when i can get them, I call myself a collector, others call me a

I would like to start buying some linen thread as i really like the texture and
the while concept of a fiber that you can grow (other than cotton and the
likes). I do know that linen threads store really well, but are difficult to
store.

Where would i begin to start storing the linen thread for the long term. I
would like to do it right the first time.

I would love to hear any factoids about linen, and how you like it.
