[lace] Silver/gold metallic thread?

2023-04-10 Thread lacysuzette
Hello All! I am searching for a 4-ply round, braided thread to finish a
project. Each ply is approximately equal to a single strand of Kreinik Japan
thread. Two plies are silver, two gold. It is likely the thread is
“Christopher TM #22” & discontinued. After scouring the net, I found
Christopher threads on eBay type sites but not this color/weight. By looking
at the various tags, it looks like the company was located in Newtown, PA;
Walnut Creek, CA or Reno, NV at some points in time. Many thanks in advance if
anyone can suggest a source—I need several yards! Sincerely, Susan Hottle,
South Florida, USA where it is very windy & there are marine warnings

[lace] Holiday Ornament Exchange

2022-12-30 Thread lacysuzette
Hello All! Now that the dust has cleared & the holiday hoopla is nearly
over, did anyone else miss our Annual Arachne Holiday Ornament Exchange? When
I searched the archives, I couldn’t find any posts for this year! The last
time I corresponded with our “exchange coordinator”, she was working thru
major health & housing issues in the summer. There’s been no correspondence
since then. Is this a good time to discuss what Arachne members want to do
going forward? And if we decide to continue our exchanges, to seek a volunteer
if our former coordinator is no longer willing/able? Any thoughts? Sincerely,
Susan Hottle in South Florida

[lace] Bolster Pillow Bobbin Management

2022-10-16 Thread LacySuzette
Thank you Janice for describing yet another management idea! I did finish my
sample swatch & posted it to Flickr Photostream. Sadly, my enthusiasm for
using my bolster for this project is waning so I think my next step will be to
test this pattern on a roller pillow to see if that helps. Frankly, it’s too
big a project & it won’t be any fun if I’m struggling with threads &
equipment. I did work “groups” of bobbins & set up a line of divider pins
along the edge, an arrangement that sounds similar to your pearl lineup. It
worked, but was very slow going. Maybe I’m expecting too much? Maybe I
can’t successfully manage more than 5 pairs (Idrija narrow tape)? A roller
pillow comparison test should help me find out whether this is a three month
or a three year project! In the meantime, I’m sorry about all the knots.
Between my mistakes & trying to use up odds & ends of perle 5, stuff happened.
I made the swatch as a mat so it might be useable for something. Sincerely,
Susan, South Florida

[lace] Bolster Pillow Bobbins

2022-10-12 Thread LacySuzette
Update—I’m now using a mix of ribbon (thx Angel) & crocheted holders (thx
DN). Just tied them on. Better organized, reduced threat of tipping over & no
danger of stabbing myself. It’s still pretty fiddly (for me) but an
improvement. Less gnashing of teeth that’s for sure! Susan, South Florida

[lace] Bolster pillow Bobbin management

2022-10-08 Thread LacySuzette
Many thanks to all who wrote—Clearly experience speaks volumes!! I
must say I would never have thought of using a wire wrapped dowel or rubber
bands. I truly appreciate your advice on the weekend especially as I was
hoping to make progress before Monday. There are definitely “groups” that
can be worked while others “rest” although I found it a bit of a challenge
unless the working threads are overly long. After considering all your
suggestions, combined with what I have on hand in our tiny condo, I decided to
try the “tuning fork” bobbin holders I bought at a Flanders
class—ironically from Annick! I did use divider pins plus one flat holder
but the elastic is fiddly to use without a flat pillow. All I can say is my
hat is off to anyone who manages lots of bobbins on a bolster! This might be
something I need to see/learn in person? So far my Rube Goldberg set up is
slightly faster than before. But—Anna—you have hit the nail on the head.
This might be easier on a different pillow. I do have a wide roller pillow
that I could try before I embark on making/buying a block pillow. I posted a
photo on Flickr & yes I realize it looks like something MacGyver would make!
;-) I also posted a pic of another small Binche ornament from “Christmas by
Kumiko”. They are in Photostream. Thanks again & enjoy what’s left of your
weekend! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, South Florid

[lace] Bolster pillow bobbin management

2022-10-08 Thread lacysuzette
Hello All! Yesterday I started a test swatch for Annick Staes butterfly scarf.
Since I don’t own a block pillow, I’m working on my bolster—18” long X
7” diameter. This is the pillow I use for Idrija & I’ve never had a
problem managing my bobbins. I just throw them to the side & over the back or
hang them on a pin at the side of my work. Unfortunately my swatch has more
than 40 pairs! Needless to say they have been fighting amongst themselves &
gotten quite tangled. :-( Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal
with this? I looked online & only found YouTube videos on how to make the
pillow itself. Frankly I can’t imagine making a 48” scarf without
improving my bobbin management. I’ll still be working on it next year! Many
thanks if you can help. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, South Florida

[lace] Bobbin Hunt & Brian’s “retirement”

2022-09-28 Thread LacySuzette
Hello All! Gee, it’s been ages since I’ve “talked” with Arachne. Our
list is often quiet but I follow every comment. Brian—thank you for creating
such a wonderful bobbin resource! Enjoy your well-deserved retirement.
Undoubtedly archery will suit you well—aim high! Coincidentally, I’m on
the hunt for bobbins similar to ones I bought in Ohio many years ago. I posted
a photo to Flickr—it’s the newest entry in the PhotoStream because I
couldn’t remember how to edit the order in my album. Egad! The bobbins in
question are on the left in the photo—approximately 5-7/8” long & suitable
for making a scarf. They resemble Danish bobbins but are larger & hold LOTS
more thread. If anyone can shed light on where I can get them, please let me
know. (Apparently the bobbin turner has retired.) There’s an interesting
scarf pattern by Anne-Marie Verbeke hanging in the balance! It’s been a busy
year for me & I was lucky to take classes with Kumiko, Lieve Pollet & Annick
Wils. As usual, lots of mistakes but I detect a bit of improvement. Sue B,
thanks for posting pics of your “Lace Dress” components. I’m looking
forward to seeing the completed project. Hope every Arachnid is well & making

Hello All! This week I stumbled upon a most delightful holiday pattern when I
borrowed
some periodicals from the IOLI Library. The pricking was published in the
Summer 2004 issue, page 16, of “Australian Lace” & was designed by Robin
Heufhauff. If I start now, I might be able to complete it by next Christmas
LOL! Unfortunately, I have no clue where to start so I thought I would ask the
Arachne experts. Has anyone worked the lace or does anyone know the designer
so I could request some pointers? Father Christmas is very handsome & I own a
skein of Anchor variegated red embroidery floss that I’d like to use for his
robe. Many thanks if you can help. We are living thru challenging times so I
hope all Arachneans managed to find some joyful moments this season. Happy New

[lace] Half stitch repeats

2021-06-17 Thread LacySuzette
Hello All! I’m on the horns of a dilemma with a little lace strip involving two
sections of cloth stitch with a section of half stitch in between. I’m using
various color threads & wondered if there is a formula for calculating how many
rows of half stitch are in a repeat. One edge is a sewing edge pin under four,
the other is winkie pin. A long time ago I read something about keeping the
edge in cloth stitch (Cook?) & doing so would maintain the color as a border.
My goal is to have the half stitch section centered between the cloth stitch
sections & come out even. Is this something that I need to sketch out with
colored pencils or is there an easier way? Any suggestions are most welcome.

pretty Beds edgings seem to be at a premium these days. Louise West website has
some charming patterns but nothing that looked like the Sheet 42 sample.
Bedford Higgins Museum published some books of Beds patterns (OOP?) from items
in their collection, although I don’t recall small edgings. They are available
from the IOLI library—easy to borrow & find out. Another place to look would be
the Arizona Archives—loads of vintage stuff & free to download. Otherwise, if
Underwood pattern 7 is close enough, Karisse, could you interpolate? Hope you
find a workable solution! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, South Florida, USA

inside each “arch” instead of one as on Sheet 42. Hope this helps if other
ideas don’t work out. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, South Florida, USA

[lace] Luton Pattern Book

2020-11-13 Thread LacySuzette
The IOLI Library has four volumes of Luton Lace Treasury by Sally Berry. On
the IOLI site they are described as Bucks but the Luton Pattern Book included
other types. Sorry to say, I’ve borrowed the books & don’t recall exactly what
Ms. Berry researched & diagrammed. They ARE worth borrowing even if they don’t
contain the sheet 42 sample you seek! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, South Florida,

Re: [lace] Linen thread

2020-11-02 Thread LacySuzette
Thanks for weighing in on this issue Brenda! I’ve annotated my Threads for
Lace accordingly. My search has identified all kinds of linen threads/yarns
that I’d never heard of. Most of them are heavier weight to please the knitters
& book binders. BUT, perhaps I’ve hit a nerve here. Lacemakers are customers
too & one might wonder if someone wants to please us! Has any thread company
tried a subscription model? What’s the minimum run? There should be reasonable
demand for linen 130 to 140/2—40wcm seems like sewing thread. I’m not searching
for 300! In the meantime, I will test my design in cotton so I can move ahead
in the scale that I selected. Francis is both charming & helpful so I will see
what he says about the linen. I do think the “grabby” nature of linen would
produce a superior result. Thanks again to everyone who has corresponded &
added to this discussion. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, South Florida USA

Re: [lace] Linen thread

2020-11-01 Thread LacySuzette
To follow up—apparently Bockens has discontinued 120/2 linen (34wcm) so Holly
is offering Fil au Chinois, 1500m. Seems like a 3 lifetime supply plus I was
aiming for a slightly finer thread. I’ve been working with YLI Fine metallics
(39wcm) on a 3mm isometric grid. It’s a good fit for that scale, hence my
search! Susan

[lace] Linen thread

2020-11-01 Thread LacySuzette
Hello All! Quick question—it seems like semi-fine linen thread in the 40wcm
range is not available in the US. What gives? I want to make a bangle Christmas
ornament & try linen. Cotton isn’t my first choice. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

[lace] Happy Columbus Day?

2020-10-12 Thread LacySuzette
NOT! I’m trying to stay busy as I suffer from Ithaca Lace Day withdrawal. I’m
sure I speak for all when I express how much I miss the classes, shopping,
exhibits, fun, frolic & camaraderie that normally happens on Columbus Day
weekend. Holly, Jerry & many lace elves make this a “must attend” event. While
it can’t be replicated, I hope everyone is taking care of themselves at home by
doing something lacy in honor of Ithaca! I am organizing many weeks of
pointfusion emails by topic & adding pages to my design notebook. Looking
forward to seeing everyone again in 2021. Sincerely, Susan Hottle FLA, USA

[lace] Thread storage

2020-10-12 Thread LacySuzette
Hello All! My “lace cave” moved recently & I was faced with larger, deeper
drawers that are more difficult to subdivide. The Plano fishing boxes I use for
metallics are expensive & not really conducive to separating various size
spools of cotton, linen, silk & other fibers. What to do? As I opened my
recycling bin to discard a plastic berry box, I stopped dead in my tracks! Was
this a FREE (!!) & easy alternative to plastic boxes at The Container Store?
Berry boxes come in several sizes, they’re stackable & there’s an unlimited
supply because we eat berries every day. All I had to do was wash them out,
although there is a gel sticky pad in the smallest that it is easily removed.
I posted a photo to Arachne Flickr so you can see how it works. Smallest is
raspberry/blackberry size, 6oz/170g. Medium is blueberry 1 US pint/551 ml &
large is strawberry 1 US Lb/454g. Containers are clear plastic so you can see
what’s inside. Hope this is helpful to others who want to ta!
me their threads! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, FLA, USA

[lace] Needlelace—PHD finished!

2020-09-02 Thread LacySuzette
Hello All! It’s amazing what you can collect over the years! As we get ready
to move yet again, I was sorting thru my embroidery, beading, braiding & lace
stuff because I know that I can’t take all of it to a small condo. Mind you, I
did this less than two years ago when we downsized & my stash was still
overflowing. :-( So I made two piles—“keepers” & “find a good home”.
Luckily, friends & friends of friends provided good homes so I can move without
sending any treasures to the landfill. That brings me to my PHD—Project Half
Done. It’s a lovely Lynn Payette beaded needlelace dragonfly that I started in
EGA, 15 maybe 20? years ago. Everything was there in the plastic bag, calling
my name. With all my books/supplies packed & lots of last minute moving
details, it turned out to be the right project for the right time. When I
finished, I took my dragonfly outside to take a picture & a real dragonfly
immediately started to buzz me! He had iridescent blue!
wings & a copper colored body & he was quite persistent. According to Google,
male dragonflies are territorial. I think my lavender/blue version is a lady
but apparently he didn’t think so! My laptop is packed & I have not figured out
how to post a photo to Arachne Flickr from my iPad photo library so if anyone
has a tutorial, please share. Many thanks. Sincerely, Susan

[lace] Balmain gown with Cluny de Brioude leaves

2020-08-04 Thread LacySuzette
Thank you Vicki for identifying the house! I’ve been racking my brain to
remember because it didn’t seem like Dior & Givenchy sourced high-end
embroidery from Lesage. I met Odette Arpin (Meilleur Ouvrier de France en
dentelle Cluny) in 2002 & she showed me a photo (same one?) of a long gown with
hundreds of leaves on the bodice & a floaty layered chiffon skirt. It was
strapless & dreamy! I was under the impression that the leaves were gold, as in
metallic thread, but maybe that’s a factor of my lousy French & the fact she
didn’t speak English. Nevertheless, she was a gracious hostess & showed us her
exhibit of personal items (fans, gloves, parasol etc—some of which were lace)
that had belonged to a 19thC Portuguese queen. She also autographed her Cluny
book that I had bought in a miniature tabac in LaBourboule, where we were
staying. We were a small group of crazy quilt stitchers & we used our mid-week
day off to make a whirlwind tour of Brioude. We also found a!
haberdashery where handmade lace (Torchon-like trims & insertions) was still
sold by the yard & a brocante with 19thC fashion magazines. We all bought some
of each! So—designers have used handmade lace sporadically thru the
years/collections but it’s way too expensive for pret-a-porter. It’s a very
thin slice of the fashion market. Sincerely, Susan Hottle

OMG—what a great job! Organized in the twinkling of an eye by our very

[lace] Colored Silk threads

2020-07-11 Thread LacySuzette
Hello all! Many weeks ago, I asked questions about Soie Ovale & other “flat
silk” threads. I have an upcoming project that requires fine, colored silk
threads with low twist. Thanks to the Silk King, Francis B, I now have a better
understanding of silk thread construction! Sue Babbs kindly sent samples of
Bart & Francis 70/2 150 denier, Soie Ovale & Piper’s silk floss to help me
decide what might work. And YES—you can make a very useful sample with 2yds of
thread! ;-) I posted photos of some stem segments, 2-3mm wide, on Flicker.
From the top—B 4pr, Piper’s 5pr & Ovale 6pr. Trish Nguyen at Thistle Threads
mentioned in her blog that Ovale was divisible but seeing is believing. While
removing each of Sue’s threads from their ID tags, I managed to snag the
threads so I used a tiny sponge dampened with water to smooth the
fibers/reconstitute the threads. The strands of Ovale did not readily rejoin
each other so I tapped the end of the thread & voila—6 dist!
inct strands easily separated. It is slightly finer than Piper’s floss & when
I measured the single strand, I estimated 40 wraps. (According to Brenda, Soie
Ovale is 13 wraps.) While this would be a major undertaking for a large
project, it is do-able in a pinch. However, before dividing Ovale I think I
would take a closer look at color availability in B 140/2 75 denier, also 40
wraps. Lastly, I stumbled upon Kreinik silk Serica, a 3-ply that is divisible.
This has been quite an adventure in filament silkdom! Thanks for all the help
Arachne! Sincerely, Susan Hottle in Florida, USA

[lace] Tonder lace

2020-04-24 Thread lacysuzette
Hello All! Devon, I am most intrigued by your question & look forward to
answers from the experts. In the meantime, as one of the least experienced
lacemakers on Arachne, may I call your attention to the Lace Dealer’s Pattern
Book? When I saw your sample, I thought of the many fanciful floral samples I
saw in Luton. Shapes decorated with/divided by gimp fingers, patterned groups
of tallies, flower motifs strewn with abandon etc. I will be quiet now & wait
to get my ears pinned back by someone who will explain why this is Tonder & not
English lace!  Thanks for posting. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, FL, USA

[lace] Soie Ovale

2020-04-18 Thread LacySuzette
Hello All! On a quick break from Binche, I wanted to ask a question about this
thread. Has anyone used it to make lace? From what I can determine online, it’s
considered a flat silk but in fact has a very slight twist. A website—that I
can’t find now!—said that it makes nice lace. Looking at online photos, Soie
Ovale can’t possibly be “true” flat silk like the tubes they sell at the
Japanese Embroidery Center. JEC fiber is is intended to be “spun” by the
individual embroiderer before stitching. The way the Soie Ovale comes off the
spool is much different & it seems more integrated as a multi-filament strand,
even though it is divisible. If anyone can shed some light, I would appreciate
the help. Thanks. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Florida, USA

[lace] ClippyKit Bag Patterns by Jane Atkinson—sample on Flickr

2020-04-05 Thread LacySuzette
Thanks to advice from Jane & others, I managed to finish my sample! It was
quite an adventure working with multiple threads as weavers. Two strands of #8
perle were too thick so I tried 1) #12 perle with #8 & 2) two stands of floss
with #8. Passives are all #8. My colors are peach, rose & pale yellow as I did
not have red, yellow & orange as shown on Jane’s pattern. BTW—this is a free
pattern on her site if you want to have fun with stripes too! Be advised the
stripes are textured, sort of like bias tape. I do want to work her pattern
again to see if I can create more distinctive stripes. The heathered look is
appealing but it’s less bold than I would like. After posting a photo to
Flickr, I was surprised to see that we don’t have a boatload of new lace
posted. With everyone sheltering in place, Arachne members must be producing
lace by the pound! BTW—Something tells me one of our clever members is already
designing a lace coronavirus molecule to lift our spirit!
 s. I briefly (& foolishly) thought of trying it myself. Ha, ha—my usual
enthusiasm without skills! Wishing Good Health to all. Sincerely, Susan Hottle,

[lace] Identifying Rosaline - or something else?

2020-04-04 Thread LacySuzette
Thanks to Devon for sharing your collar & to Elizabeth Kurella for identifying
it! The last photo on Ning—a closeup of a partial “rose”—was a real puzzler for
me. The way it is made/attached to its stem makes it seem like a Rosaline
wannabe rather than the real thing. Rosaline is light & airy, even when the
tiny motifs are densely spaced. The brick
needle ground in Devon’s piece produces a much heavier appearance. Thanks for
the tutorial! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Florida USA

[lace] Clippykit Bag Patterns by Jane Atkinson

2020-03-28 Thread LacySuzette
Hello All! Hope everyone is virus free & using their personal quarantine
period to make some lace! I am revisiting the colored Torchon samples on Jane’s
site & have run into a snag. It’s the first sample—red & yellow diagonal
stripes over butterscotch passives. I am clueless on how to change colors when
starting stripes on the righthand side! In the upper right corner, I’m inclined
to just start with a red weaver rather than switch at the first pin, but that
theory doesn’t work further down in the sample. Should I just tie on a new
thread to be used as the weaver as the work progresses? I would be more eager
to try this if I was replacing a passive! Will the experts please offer
suggestions? Many thanks. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, still virus free in Florida
