Re: [lace] informal survey

2004-07-04 Thread ann DURANT
A single bedspread? A throw? Cot blanket? Pram blanket? Something to
keep your knees and feet warm in the winter? A long time ago, when my
children were small, I made three bedspreads, in squares, in colours to suit
each child. One was in blues and greens, one in browns and oranges and the
third one was red, with two adjacent stripes in white, to signify the Number
11 that was used by George Best. The blue and green one became infested
with cat fleas while the cats were in a cattery, and my daughter put the
bedspread into a boil wash, to destroy the fleas. Unfortunately, it was
pure wool, so the result was tragic!

[lace] Informal survey

2004-07-02 Thread Whitham
Thanks Bev, this thread has been fun. It has also relieved me of some
quilty thoughts of not getting my conference class projects done. I am
not alone!!!

So my projects on the go are:

Russian Tape Lace, Tønder, 2004,
Crysanthemum Lace, Victoria, 2003,
Brugges Bloemwork, Tacoma, 2000,
Lace Edging started yesterday, goal: 5 metres

Now, we were only talking about "lace projects" weren’t we??? I have
more sewing, cross stitch, knitting etc etc but we won't go there!!!

Now to Alices's suggestion of having too many pillows, I sold 4 recently
at a lace day. I was feeling overcrowded in my computer/craft room and
wanted to avoid getting new projects on all my pillows. Then, I needed
to make a new square pillow that would fit in my suitcase to take to
Tønder that there wasn't room for anyway, either going or coming home.

Happy UFO'ing!!!

Hello Beth,
Is the bedspread in squars? Than you could make very modern sleeves for
a blouse or a dress, take it with one of the corner in the middle of
the shoulder and sew on the two sides going from this point and ready
is it.

Beth, you've just reminded me - I started a crochet tablecloth before we were
married nearly 39 years ago! I finished a 36" square one, then decided to add
more motifs to make it fit the dining table, which it nearly does, but then I
changed my square table to a round one! I can't bear to throw all that work
away, but I know I'll never get around to doing anything more with it.

how about a large floor cushion - make a dark blue floor cushion and use
your half a bed spread as a topper - mind you you'd have to sew down at a
lot of points to make it usable

[lace] informal survey

2004-07-01 Thread Westland District Library
We-e-ll, I've got three projects on pillows - a tape lace doily that has
been going on for far too long, a 'yardage' edging on my travel pillow
(begun in 2001, and a good length now), and a collar for one of my Sasha
dolls. Another project just awaiting finishing is a cherry spray (pattern
from the internet) which has to be sewn onto a t-shirt.

Just finished is a snake bookmark in one-third scale, for the recent Sasha
Doll Festival children's fund auction (Sashas need bookmarks for their
books, too!).

And the next project? a garter or handkerchief for my daughter's wedding!

Like Noelene, I have been captivated by (almost addicted to!) the results
one can achieve by knitting up sock yarn, and have made a number of Sasha
doll sweaters with it - now I want to try a pair of socks!

I'm used to doing conversions in the other direction, so that I can
knit/crochet US patterns using yarn bought in UK sizes. For my tension
converting a sport weight yarn to a UK double knit works. Double knit is
fatter than 4 ply, so maybe you do need something finer. I have made lace
(in a Jane Atkinson class) using threads of double knit thickness. The yarn
fills up the bobbins very quickly, so huge bobbins are needed to get any
decent amount on to make a piece of any size like a scarf.

I do not write often but I guess that survey is contagious! Like usual
for me, I have only one bobbin lace work going on. It is a swedish
torchon 'Girlang' with square tallies. I have 30 pairs with Bockens
linen #60/2 and one thread of 18/5 linen as gimp. I work on my
Christina pillow and it is very relaxing to do.

Besides, I am also making a necklace with Artistic wire #24 in spool
knitting and I add beads. These necklaces are very popular in my circle

[lace] informal survey

2004-06-30 Thread Janice Blair
Trust Bev to come up with a question that is filling the digests quickly. You will
need another question for August when we all go off to IOLI convention.

I have just finished the lace for the Seascape hankie that is on the front of
Traditional Bucks Point book and I am putting off attaching it to the fabric. Needles
and I just do not seem to work well together!! As my daughter does not seem in a
hurry to get married (31) or give me grandchildren, I am not in any hurry to do the
sewing. Wish I could find someone who likes heirloom sewing that I could entrust my
lace to. I think my only other lace on a pillow is a bucks point edging and I have a
couple of yards done but have lost interest in favour of designing my own stuff.

I have been working on some new designs for publication including a pendant in wire
and some Milanese. I am also knitting (very slowly) a lace shawl in alpaca in between
knitting scarves in Italian Eros yarn that we are selling for our convention fund. I
can't seem to keep one for myself as when I show them around they get sold off my neck!

I had to free up my large block pillow for convention which is why the hankie lace got
finished. I am in the Gillian Dye class working with wool. I am thinking of the
future when finer threads are too much for old fingers and eyes!! Has anyone taken a
class with Gillian and if so what sizes of yarn does she use as the instructions just
call for "wool"? I came across a pattern of hers in a Lace magazine which called for
4-ply yarn but when I went to my American yarn shop today she said 4-ply was the
equivalent to sports weight. I thought that looked too thick for making lace but
maybe she was right. Also can I mix different types of yarn such as wool, wool/silk
blends, etc. Input please.

I only have the one cookie pillow (my eyes about popped out at the
results of the CLG's pillow survey), and it's got a Russian Lace piece
on it. I recently hit the halfway-done mark, but I was distracted by

I really look forward to having separate pillows for separate levels

sometimes one wants to dive into a really big project (need more bobbins

Hi Bev and all,

I work on
- a Danish pattern "Flugten til Amerika" (=The escape to America) by Aase
Nilsson.
It is a picture with a girl and a boy and I make it as gift.
It is made in colour and I use Bockens linen 60/2.
- a Celtic wallhanging in torchon design by Jenny Hester (who I think is
lurking).
It is worked in white thread with gimps outline the knots.
When ready it will be a fringe of beads matching the gimps.
- on my Honiton pillow I have the 3rd pattern in Cynthia Voysey's book A
practical Guide.
- last but not least I work on a pattern in Bucks Point called Rosemary by
Geraldine Stott.
It is a hexagonal mat and I'm fine until I reach the place to turn...
I'm not giving up but I nearly throw the pillow in the wall the other day as
I couldn't figure out what I did wrong.
I will go back soon and look at it again.
I also got the beading bug and am making an amulet bag.
I have put all this in a folder called "bobbin lace and other crafts" in my
webshots to look at.

Myself, I have been mostly Lace Knitting lately. Some one gave the Agency I
work for over 200 skeins of acrylic yarn and I am making a baby blanket
right now. Plan to do some hats and maybe mittens for Christmas. (I work
for a small Social Services Agency.)
I did discover Lenka's Wire Angel almost ready to come off the pillow so
will finish that up -maybe that is the pillow I will take to Prague.
and last Sat. at our Guild meeting I started the world's smallest
handkerchief edging (fabric will be about 2 inches sq.). It is a lesson in
turning corners but with an new style beginning -from "The Beginning of the
End".
I need to measure the edging on another pillow and see if it is enough to do
a pair of pillow cases to enter into the local fairs. I know it is close.
I really should inventory all my pillows and see what else is in the works.

All this and try to get the house in shape to leave for two weeks.
Where will I find the time.

I also have in progress a cross stitch lion's head on a T-shirt (using waste

Does anyone have any helpful hints about dealing with this condition? I am

[lace] Informal survey

2004-06-30 Thread Jean Nathan
I'm currently working on my luggage label piece of lace for the Lace Guild
Census of Lacemakers, and I'm beginning to regret deciding on a curved
miniature piece. I started with Honiton bobbins, and abandoned those because
with RA I found them very difficult to pick up. Now I've sorted out my
lightest Midlands, and am on my third start with those.

For the first I tried using a scanned reduction of the pattern. That was too
light to see the pattern markings between the pin holes. For the second I
decided to modify the pattern and drew the whole lot. The lines were too
thick for me to see the thread paths under the threads. So the third attempt
is a good reduced photocopy with only the headside Tippexed out and redrawn
where the holes are furthest apart.

When I first started, I thought I was working with a cobweb, but now the
thread seems thick and the thinnest pins I can find seem like javelins.

Hi there I am currently trying to finish three half gloves for a wedding on
10th July. I have finished two and am working furiously on the third. The
gloves have a hand made ring which is joined to a piece of lace which comes
over the back of the hand and joins to a lace wrist band. This is my first
real try at designing and has been quite a challenge but the Bride is
pleased with my efforts so far - which is a relief!

[lace] informal survey

Hi Bev and all
I'm currently working on a pretty torchon wedding garter designed by
Maragret Allen, my son (oldest of three sons) gets married in February 2005
and it is for his bride to be. My husband is also working a pretty wedding
garter, my middle son gets married in August 205 and this is for his bride
to be.

Just hope neither of the two daughters decide to get married yet as I want
to get on with my own designs and projects - will just have to get this
worked extra fast!

Bye for now, must get on with this garter (chance would be a fine thing at
the moment!)

Half your luck! What sort of quilting - and the patchwork part, too, I
presume. By hand or machine?
How do you restrain yourself from buying a piece of everything? :)) :))

And here in Oz. no knitting needles, or crochet hooks are allowed on planes,
nor nail clippers, etc. I get out the plastic tatting shuttle that has a
long pointy end, and "play around" with that, just to keep my hands busy!!

Hello everyone,
Usually I am a lurker but it is neat to see what everyone else is doing.
1.Right now I am working on a piece of metal lace from Lenka's Renaissance
lace class
2. I also have a scarf from Clare Burkhold's book on my demo pillow but I must
look at it again to see if it is realistic to work on it as I demo.
3. I have just completed 3 bookmarks that were given to special friends.

Spiders,

I am currently working on a Downton edging of Duke's
Garter that I plan to use as a hanky edging for a
friend that is getting married next spring. I had no
purpose for the lace when I started it, but when Lisa
got engaged I knew what I was going to do with it.
She is a fiber person (she sews period clothes) and I
know it won't end up in a garage sale!

My son is working on a bookworm and I am going to push
him to finish it because I am going to need every
bobbin I own for my 2 bobbin lace classes at the IOLI
Convention. For that reason I haven't started any new
projects. I have been knitting lately, and am
interested in knitted lace. Does anyone have a
recommendation for a beginner's book on knitted lace?

I have some tatted snowmen that need hats still. I
wanted to finish them for a July birthday gift.

That's it for me right now. I'm sure it will be
different when I get home from Convention.

I'm working a 3" wide circular Bucks edgingI think the pattern came from a
"Lace" magazine at least 15 years ago! I actually worked the piece some 10 or
more years ago, but wasn't happy with the join, so always promised myself I'd
re-work it one day. When mounted, it makes a mat approx 10" across.

I've been alternating working on:
1. A 4-inch 's-Gravenmoerse edging,
2. A series of Flower Pictures from the Kortelahti Paper Strings book
3. Choosing patterns for a series of bookmarks I promised to make
4. A Torchon edging, homework from my Torchon for Teachers class
The various UFO's that have been waiting, are still waiting. The above is
taking all my lacing time so far this summer.

RE: [lace] informal survey

2004-06-29 Thread Clay Blackwell
Thanks, Bev - for starting an interesting thread that helps get us out of
our summer doldrums! I confess that I'm doing more quilting than
lacemaking at the moment - a fact that is attributed to my happy part-time
employment in a quilt shop where I can make up shop samples to my heart's
content - and not have to buy the fabric! Eventually, after the quilt has
been on display for a while, I'll be able to bring it (them) home for
"keeps" (I'm working on my second quilt, having done the first in just a
few days last month. This one is significantly more difficult!!)

But I do get back to my pillow several times a week! I'm currently working
on panel #1 from "HOOP" - the fabulous Binche piece which was worked to
raise money for Cancer research. This section is tiny - only about 1.5" x
maybe 3"... but it's worked in 140/2 cotton, and I currently have 148
bobbins on the pillow. It's not so difficult as it is tedious (because of
the tiny scale) but I thrive on that kind of work, and I'm enjoying it
immensely! So far, I've found the diagram to be excellent - accurate and
easy to read. Those are the main things I want in a diagram!!

I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of Beryl Maw's new pattern pack! I am
confident that once that's in my hands, I'll spend less time quilting, more
time making lace!!

I'm working on Louise Colgan's Bucks Point fan, from her book of 4
different types of lace fans. This was a class I took at last year's
IOLI convention, and I'm trying to finish it before this year's

I've got Marianne Kinsel's Rose of England Tea cloth on the needles. Knitted
lace is my lace of choice. I'm 129 rows of 152 rows down, but I just agreed
to doing lace for a wedding hankie for the last week of August.

So what I'm /really/ doing is swatching up edging patterns and trying to
find one that I like and speaks to be before I do 50 some odd inches of it.
And wondering if my barely beginner torchon skills are up to the challenge.

Quick answer in between travels and jet lag!

I am currently working on 4 projects (at different times of day)

1 a bobbin lace scarf in cotton perle 8 from an enlarged Binche pattern

2 a beaded necklace which I started 4 years ago, but have now decided to
finish

3 a quilted jacket, which will also have bobbin lace on it, when the scarf
pillow is free to use again

4 some crocheted hats (good for working on flights). Our church makes hats
and donates them to a shelter in downtown Chicago in winter.

There are a few ufos around also!

What lace(s) are you working on now? Maybe don't list all the ones you

ok - I'll begin - last night I borrowed DH's new hobby magnifiers (the
plastic hat-band style) and joyfully (because I could see to do so) put
pins in the Spring picture from Further Steps in Honiton Lace. That
project 'for now' has brevity - it will joins its sister pillows in
storage, waiting for ambition, 'round tuits, and other necessary willful
ingredients.

What I am really doing 'now' is the butterfly from 75 Quick and Easies, in
Valdani variegated thread, colour 'deep waters' - it is working up lovely,
esp. with the two gold threads that ended up begin paired with variegated
(when I hung on the loops to start, I forgot I had an uneven number - but
I rather like the effect of the gold more intermingled with the
variegated). I lucked into a sale of the Valdani, which might have
numbered days - I had bought it from aquilt shop, but they told me they
won't stock it again because of slubs. Yes, it has slubs - but otherwise
is a lovely thread to work with. I can see that the slubbing would cause
problems for machine embroidery/quilting.

Do, please, respond to the survey. I might compile something eventually,
or not
