Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-30 Thread Pete Beatty
I have a setup similar to John's.
I have two machines: one for Daily use and one used on Travel.
I have a NAS installed at home with redundant hard drives.
The NAS can be accessed from the WEB (Double PASSWORD Protected).
The NAS retains the last edited version of the my data file.

When I finish updating my work data, on either machine. The Machine will
automatically update the modified files on the NAS.
When I power on either my Home or Travel machine, the first task the
machine performs is to sync with the NAS.
This makes sure that I am always working with the newest version.

In addition, both system will automatically backup the machine to the NAS,
daily.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname Changed When Immigrated

2019-11-25 Thread Pete Beatty
A lesson I learned: In the 1800’s and early 1900’s, the majority of
individuals could not spell. Therefore, when they would need to record
their name, they relied on the individual completing the form, to spell
their names. This resulted in numerous and different spellings for the same
individual.

I have one record where the spelling of the same individual has 6 different
spellings.

Gail,
The simplest way is to copy W7 media files to an external drive. Then copy
the files from the external drive to W10.1

Re: [LegacyUG] Location names for Pennsylvania

2019-08-02 Thread Pete Beatty
I believe that we should be bridging “what was” and “what is”. People like
to know the history. Yet, it has no meaning if they can not relate to
present day.

I take the approach of making a word modification to the location data.

I primarily use the current location and then insert the original location
in parenthetical notation (I.e. “formerly xxx township”).

[LegacyUG] Confused

2019-07-26 Thread Pete
I have a husband and wife that were married in the mid 1700's. They had a
total of eight children. A recent find was wills for both. The issue is
that the transcriptions indicate that two children were possibly born before
the marriage. Specifically, it suggests that both the husband and the wife
had at a children before there were married. No previous marriage has been
found or indicated.
I believe this could be shown if I record both with a previous marriage to
"unknown" individuals. I am also thinking about leaving the name empty.
I am getting confused with the various options. Is there a way to indicate
a previous marriage, without using a individual's name?
Any suggestion would be helpful.

Thanks

Pete

Re: [LegacyUG] Announcement from the staff

2019-05-16 Thread Pete
This is not a GMAIL issue.

ALL major mail systems are based on a defined standard (Simple Mail Transport
Protocol), and have the ability to request a return. The issue is wither or
not you have set the automatic option, on your email account. You first need
to check your options on your account. If you have not set the correct option,
you will not get an automatic copy for EVERY message you send. Check with your
provider if you REALLY want this option set for all emails you send.

If you only want a return form selected emails, try using the appropriate SMTP
delivery codes, usually "CC" (Carbon Copy).

No, because I am not using Gmail. I think it is Gmail that doesn't send

[LegacyUG] Possible Error

2019-05-08 Thread Pete
I have noticed that there appears to be an issue with the mouse fly over
implementation.
An example can be seen when you move you mouse over the four buttons on in
the Marriage section.
As the mouse moves onto a button you are presented with a QUICK single
description of the button (i.e. "Sources"). The time is so quick that you
need to rescan the button, before you can make out what it says. Obviously,
the intent of the box is to show the purpose of the button. However, the
current implementation a single flash, that is impossible to read.
I have not found anything in the options that appears to correct/improve
this visual issue. The same issue is present across all of the various
displays and suggests a programming issue.
Is this a common use? If so, when will it be fixed?
If not a common issues, does anyone know how to correct the issue?
I am running version 9.0.0.295

[LegacyUG] SourceWriter and Irish Census of 1901/1911

I have been trying to find some explanation of HOW TO add a master source,

However, I am now in the overload mode where I am totally confused.

Hi

Your question is whether to two people are actually one person. If you believe
that they are then you should merge them and document your decision.

It is not uncommon for people to have multiple names, quite often as a nickname
or because the family decided to use a different name.

This is a question about how Legacy software uses an individual’s AKA entries,
but I need to explain with a preface.

For a year or so I have wondered how to resolve this problem with an ancestor
who changed his given names at some time between 1896 and 1900, when he moved
from Melbourne to Cape Colony, South Africa. Online (and still remaining)
there are some family trees that list 2 members of the same family, with
Identical birth date (ie, twins). That has been proven to be incorrect. BDM
registration information doesn’t support that and I don’t believe the records
were lost.

He was born Adam James Douglass LANDELLS in 1876. In 1882, on a younger
brother’s birth certificate, his mother lists all children and he is “Eddie”,
aged 6. There is an 1896 Police Gazette report of his deserting his
illegitimate child – he is named and described: Edward Landells, correct age,
same suburb.

In 1900, he marries in South Africa as Edward George LANDELLS - and there are
numerous records of children born with father’s name Edward George LANDELLS.
Documents in the possession of the next generations of those children give his
exact date of birth as is known in Australia, for the Adam James Douglass
LANDELLS above. And for this Edward George, various Australian connections are
known and documented in South Africa and have been seen by still-living
descendants.

Until now, I have found it convenient to retain 2 individuals within that part
of the Landells family – they are (I believe) the same person, same birth date,
different names (and the Legacy Hints make use of those data and connections).
The “Adam” has no wife or children; the “Edward” has wife, children.

Question: should I retain the “Adam” individual (RIN 1303), and amalgamate all
the “Edward” family connections and add an AKA – then delete the “Edward”
individual (RIN 1304) ?

[LegacyUG] Mental Block on Sources and Citation

2019-03-02 Thread Pete
I am having a mental block (thinking too much on a subject). The question
addresses the use of Master Sources. I want to review All of my source and
citation information to ensure it meets standards
Lets assume that you have over 50 references to the 1930 US Census.
I have a Master source referencing the Census and looks like (I know this is
not correct and I want to change it):
"1930 USA Federal Census. USA, Bureau of the Census, Fifteenth Census of the
USA, 1930, Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration,
1930"
Can I use a master source linked to something that shows the unique?
Where/how do you apply the unique entry information: ( "Location, Address,
row No, etc.") so that it shows in the citation.
Do I need to create (50) new sources, repeating the repository and other
common information, for each family showing the unique information?
I keep thinking there is a way; but, cannot seem to find it.

[LegacyUG] Location standards

2019-02-04 Thread Pete
I am vacillating on the standardization of Irish Locations and asking for
comments/thoughts on using:
"County" or "Co." as a prefix to specifying the County portion of the
location. I know the "Standard" using is "County".
Does it really make difference? I want to make sure that all locations are
consistant.

Re: [LegacyUG] Individual ID '302' was not found

2019-01-09 Thread Pete
Brian,
Thks for the article. However, I already did that. I id try to copy the
tree into a new file and that seemed to eliminate the problem.
I still do not know what the error was or why it started. At his point, I
will simply thank you and continue with the newly created copy.

Try the fixes suggested there.

Re: [LegacyUG] Individual ID '302' was not found

2019-01-09 Thread Pete
It occurs when I start Legacy, before it shows the first record.
It occurs whenever I select a family member and before it shows the record.
I have run 'check repair' and checked 'RIN numbering'.
I have a single file.

Since you gave us no context on what you were doing when you received
this error it is impossible to figure out why you may have gotten the
message let alone how to find the error record which the error message
says does not exist anyway.

I do suggest you run File Maintenance > Check Repair since that will fix
any indexing errors with records.

Do you work with Multiple files? I have had that kind of error when I
used a report in one file then tried to use the same report in another
file which had fewer people. The report settings were for a person ID in
the original file and that ID did not exist in the smaller file.

[LegacyUG] Individual ID '302' was not found

2019-01-09 Thread Pete
I am wondering what the subject msg really means. I have attempted to
locate the record in error and can not find anything.
I though it was referring to a RIN. However, there is no RIN above 285. I
have manually looked at the Person list and not luck.
Anyone have an idea on how to find the error record?

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing

2018-04-01 Thread Pete Beatty
When a document is converted to PDF, the PDF conversion removes all formatting
and substitutes there own PDF formatting to give the appearance of the original
document.
All tables of contents, page numbers, paragraph numbers, indexes, captions,
etc. are converted to the PDF ‘fixed’ format.
These dynamic structures MUST be recreated(cleaned up) in any document which is
copied from A PDF file.

[LegacyUG] Source Citation Info

2017-08-05 Thread Pete
Using Sourcewriter:

How would you enter data for “Crossle Genealogical Abstracts Collection”

The collection covers multiple surnames, many covering numerous volumes in
which the noted genealogist Phillip Crossle recorded is research.

The collection is on microfilm.

I thought it would be “manuscript” and tried the only option “generic”. It
would not print out the collection title. I tried “book” this did not fit and
it expected additional data.

Any hints?

Don,
I am trying to sync my data with FamilySearch.
My issue is with the way I have recorded some dates.
I have several that use a prefix of "Abt", "Bef", "c.", ad so forth.
I want to, for example, replace "Abt" with "About" by cycling through each
possible prefix and correct all of them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-06-12 Thread Pete Beatty
Michele, your current tip contains the following: "Excel can't handle pre-1901
dates so you will have a problem sorting by columns."

Excel Does not have a problem with dates prior 1901. It can handle all formats
of dates. I have several spreadsheets with some having thousands of records
with dates ranging between 0900 and present. I can sort, and filter all records
correctly.

Perhaps you are referring to dates with prefixes. We sometimes think items such
as "bef" Or "c" as dates. Technically they are not components of a date. When
you add them to a date, they are interpreted as a character string, not a date.
As a character string, the entries are not sorted as a date.

If this is the case, then excel can still properly sort. You may have to define
a format, a relatively simple process, or perform a simple cleanup.

Re: [LegacyUG] V9 Error Code 3045

2017-04-22 Thread Pete
There appear to be two ".ldb" files under the Legacy Family Tree/Data
directory.
Before you run the Legacy Program, check the "Data" directory and delete any
".ldb" files you find. When you run Legacy, It will recreate the necessary
".ldb" files.

David
There is a possibility that this is caused by an anti-virus program putting
a lock on (the technical term) the .ldb lock file. This is not your Legacy
database itself, but associated with it.
If this is the cause, then you can tell your ant-virus software to exclude
scanning of MSACCESS.EXE files But I only know this for Symantec's DLP (Data
Loss Prevention) client software. It may not apply to other "domestic" virus
checkers.

Even if this is NOT the problem, you may have to delete the .ldb file. Check
the Legacy Help web page - I think there is a specific article there. The
file is recreated by the "Access database engine" which Legacy uses, and
deleting it does no harm.
Cathy Pinner or Brian Kelly may have some observations about Error 3045?

Thank you Robert and Bob... yes I have tried rebooting. I have since
confirmed that this is indeed a MS Access (which I believe Legacy uses)
error code and not Legacy's (it is not listed in Legacy's error list
either). A Google search turned up many hits on this. I will investigate
further and get back with the group on what I find out.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with v9 Hints

2017-04-21 Thread Pete
While this thread is about Hints, I have a slightly different, but relevant
observation.

My family has been in the US since 1880. My research extends into Ireland,
where I have conducted extensive onsite research However, when I attempt use a
source (SourceWriter), there are no templates for major sites in Ireland.
Discussions with Legacy resulted in the statement “SourceWriter templates are
mostly geared for US sources”.

I have requested that Legacy add the source templates for Ireland. They have
taken the request and placed it into the program bucket with a suggested “High”
priority. Without Legacy supporting the major archives, we must “Hack” out way
into recording data properly.

My experience with this thread, suggests that Legacy may have a major issue in
supporting “foreign”/(non US) sites and data.

Irish and others. Hope that is not the case and just taking awhile to get to
searching the "foreign" sites.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing hard copy / printed book

2017-02-09 Thread Pete Beatty
CE,

The is NO commercial word processor that is going to convert any document
from another other company with 100% accuracy.

An example of this is vendor A uses a 8 character name for a paragraph style
and that document is saved as a DOC/RTF/PDF file. You open your word
processor and then open the saved document. Your word processor attempts to
convert the document to its own format. In the process it discovers an
odd/unknown style name; so, it creates a new style that allows the data to
be imported EXACTLY as it is defined.

It is your responsibility to make any necessary corrections, not the Word
Processor.

Your issue with renumbering, IS NOT an MSWord issue, it is a difference in
how that data is recorded by Legacy. It is not an issue with Legacy, it is
doing what it was designed to do.

Whatever word processor you are going to use:

Learn how the processor uses style sheets.

Learn how to modify the style sheets.

Learn how to make changes to suite your style.

Learn how to redefine a paragraph, such as keeping two paragraphs together.

If you do not know how to work with Style sheets, you are not really using
the word processor and you will always have the same formatting issues.

Your issue with numbers changing is cause because you do not understand the
style sheet and its strengths. Repositioning or moving an image can cause a
renumbering; However, if you have properly defined your style, it becomes
an automatic process.

Learn the Find/Replace function in MSWord. It works on a lot of things
other than words or characters.

My parting Comment.

You appear to be constantly running Legacy reports and then importing them
into MSWord. I suggest that instead of replacing your MSWord document, cut
and paste ONLY those portions that have been changed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing hard copy / printed book

2017-02-08 Thread Pete Beatty
I would love to know what the problems, considering that MS Word is a
corporate level word processor and has been used to produce documents with
over 1000 pages of text, graphics and pictures.

I have not come across a document that could not be produced in MS word.

When trying to put high resolution pictures, the only issue is the size of
the image, considering you are usually working with 8.5 x 11.5 sheets of
paper. The higher the resolution the more time it takes to print. When
embedding an image in a document, a 150-400dpi image should be fine.
Anything with more resolution is typically not needed.

Do you really need the higher resolution, or you just want it?

I use MS Word 2007. A number of months ago somebody in the LUG mentioned
limitations or problems with MS Word while assembling a book, and suggested
another word processing program (possibly an open-source one). I do not
remember the original question put the LUG, or the alternative word
processing program.

My basic question is whether others have had problems preparing printed
books in MS Word. If so, which alternative word processing program would
they suggest? I get nervous about doing complex things on computers, so try
to foresee and prevent problems, rather than sorting out messes later on.

I have been gradually preparing pages in MS Word, to be later inserted where
Place Holder pages have been set aside via the Legacy Publishing Center. In
them, I have inserted high resolution photos, maps etc. Could large file
sizes cause problems e.g. Does MS Word have a small clipboard or memory
which does not handle rearranging chapters or pages with high resolution
images?

I presume that when you save a book in the Publication Center as an RTF
file, it would be compatible with any word processing program.

When everything is just right, I intend to save the whole book as a PDF file
before printing.

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. I did load my data using a
GED file. After reading I went back and did some detailed checking. I did
find my data. However, it is different and I do not know exactly what the
problem is. I will have to look a little harder. My Images did not
transfer, so that is something I will have to work with. I do have all of
my images in a non-Ancestry directory, so that might be the problem. I will
change the Media directory pointer in Legacy and see if it resolves the
references. If not, I will have to reconnect manually.

transferred files from FTM to Legacy. Whatever I did media files followed
but we're all associated as Individual rather than with any other
