Page numbering query
Hi, I'm just learing to use LyX, so I'm sorry if this is a bit of a gumby-type question. I'm writing a large-ish report, and including individual chapters as files in a 'master' file. When I generate tables of contents, figures and lists, page numbers begin from the beginning of the page of contents. I would like page numbering to start at the beginning of my first chapter, and my title page, abstract, and tables of contents, figures and tables to be numbered consecutively with lower case roman numerals. I have tried the LayTeX command \pagenumbering to restart page numbers at the beginning of my first chapter, but this didn't seem to work. I then tried the command \pagenumbering{roman} to try and convert numbering in selected sections to roman numerals, and when this didn't work, I tried renewcommand\thepage{roman} (as per advice on the website), bt this didn't work either. Not sure If I've got the wrong commands, or am putting them in the wrong place, or if my approach is totally wrong. I have no prior knowledge of LayTeX, so I'm not sure how to go about it. Any tips? James
Re: pagenumbering
Hi James In the very beginning of the doc enter: \pagenumbering{roman} and on the top of the first page with arabic-numbers enter: \pagenumbering{arabic} \setcounter{page}{7} where the 7 of course is to be replaced with whatever page you're at. I didn't find the automatic way of seetting that number Med venlig hilsen Niels Müller Larsen M. Sc. document exchange between lyx 1.1.6fix4 and 1.2.0pre4 works?!
Hello, I am an windows user who uses lyx 1.1.6fix4 on a linuxServer via winserver remote login. On this server ispell does not work corretly and so I am tried another server on which lyx 1.2.0pre4 is installed. But there I get lyx closes due to a bug everytime I try to insert a bib reference. Are there any known problems that could occur when I exchange documents between these two versions? (I think I have read about a problem concerning figures in lyx...) Best wishes, Jörn

Re: LyX not rendering graphics
I had a similar problem, but I was under RH 7.0: graphics would *never* show up under Lyx 1.2.1. This weekend I got pissed about it and after a while I came to the idea of reinstalling ImageMagick, uploading from 5.3.3. to 5.5.*. It worked... seems that convert was failing before. In any case there is room for improvement in the way images are handled now, because the text jumps to the beginning when a new image is rendered, and the conversion process takes a long time in a document with several of them. Maybe the procedures should be reviewed somehow.. jb Since more than a year I have watched the list and the discussion concerning the problem that LyX renders graphics only sporadically on fast computers - I still have the problem and tried the sporadic tips to solve the problem - without success for SuSE 7.3 and SuSE 8.0. rab == rab [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: rab I asked the same question. I have three computers (work, home, rab and laptop) and the same thing happens on all three. Someone rab suggested turning on debugging using lyx -dbg any or lyx -dbg rab graphics. This shows that there is a problem in converting the rab eps into pnm (if memory serves). Yet all the necessary software rab is installed and functioning. LyX is set up to use convert from rab ImageMagick. I can convert the eps files manually but it just rab doesn't work in LyX. What is really funny is that if I load a LyX rab help document, it displays the eps figures. We are certainly aware of some of these problems, but we have difficulties to understand what they actually are, and how to solve them. It seems that various version of various utilities do not mix well together (notice the precision of this statement %-|). This problem is one reason why 1.2.2 has not been released yet, although it contains many important fixes. But, as the maintainer of the 1.2.x versions, I cannot afford to spend much time on this problem. I just do what I can. Nevertheless, I hear the complaints on lyx-users :) rab LyX 1.2.1 seems to have a lot of problems. I used to be able to rab just install the latest version and everything would basically rab work. Yet if I would log in rab as root, it would not work. This happens if latex is not configured properly for the user 'root', for example. I would be surprised if it was LyX' fault (but anything can happen...). rab Another strange problem is viewing as html. I get an error rab message about the document name if it has more than one .. rab Something about dvips not working in this case (although it has rab always worked to do a dvi preview). If I rename the document so rab it has only one ., then it makes a nice html document and rab displays it in netscape (4.79) using latex2html. This will be fixed in 1.2.2 rab In some situations (I don't remember exactly), I would get an rab error saying that netscape can't find the server. If I configure rab LyX to use mozilla, I always get this error. Must have something rab to do with writine the mozilla command to open a file. I have a fix for that that has been applied to the development version, and I will maybe apply it to 1.2.2, since we had many requests (I try to be conservative as to which fixes go to stable versions). rab I imagine when LyX installs itself (I used an rpm), it looks for rab helper programs and configures accordingly. But I have all of rab them and they worked in 1.1.6fix3 so I'm not sure why things are rab so flaky now. If it was just one machine, I could understand it rab but not three (all running RH 8.0 - maybe it has to do with RH rab 8.0). This has probably to do with the versions of some utilities shipped with rh8. Not necessarily that they are broken, but bad interaction. JMarc

With 1.2.1 now I also have trouble with the previewing of rab the document. On my home PC, if I logged in as a regular user, rab the preview worked OK (dvi, ps, and pdf). JMarc Well now that I know I didn't (necessarily) screw things up, I can just wait until the next version pr whenever it gets fixed. It was thinking that I could fix it that made me obsess about this. Thanks for letting me know. Rick B. P. S. I did upload a file produced by R you might want to use to test. I can get some eps files to render but none (so far) from R 1.6.1. I just checked and LyX 1.2.1 does render eps files from versions of R prior to 1.6.1. Unfortunately I cannot tell what is the version of R. If anyone needs an example file for comparison, please let me know.

Re: What's the real name??
My two cents... First, quoting from: http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=TeXpronounce How should I pronounce TeX? The 'X' stands for the lower case Greek letter Chi (the upper-case Greek letter doesn't look in the least like a letter X) and is pronounced by English-speakers either a bit like the 'ch' in the Scots word 'loch' ([x] in the IPA) or like 'k'. It definitely is not pronounced 'ks'. and then quoting from http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=latexpronounce How should I pronounce LaTeX(2e)? Lamport never recommended how one should pronounce LaTeX, but a lot of people pronounce it 'Lay TeX' or perhaps 'Lah TeX' (with TeX pronounced as the program itself; see the rules for TeX). It is definitely not to be pronounced in the same way as the rubber-tree gum. The 'epsilon' in 'LaTeX2e' is supposed to be suggestive of a small improvement over the old LaTeX 2.09. Nevertheless, most people pronounce the name as 'LaTeX-two-ee'. and about LyX, I got the tip from someone that as Swede I can just pronounce it as the Swedish word for luxury which happens to be lyx. (And I know from experience too that Americans find it hard to distinguish between [licks] and [lyx] :-) /Christian -- Christian Ridderström, +46-8-790 91 37 http://www.md.kth.se/~chr Mechatronics lab, Dept. of Machine Designhttp://www.md.kth.se

Any tips? James

With 1.2.1 now I also have trouble with the previewing of rab the document. On my home PC, if I logged in as a regular user, rab the preview worked OK (dvi, ps, and pdf). JMarc

Rename your file to pm25timeplot.eps and it will show up. This seems to be a LyX-bug similar to that with underscores in math formular names. Ronald

trouble viewing dvi (textcomp)
I am pulling out what hair I have left over an issue with \textcelsius on lyx 1.2.1 I have attached two lyx files one was generated by H. Voss (textcelsius.yes.lyx) and works perfectly on my machine (ie view dvi displays the degree C symbol just fine). The second file (textcelsius.no.lyx) was generated on my machine and gives an error on view-dvi. There has got to be a critical difference between these files. Has anyone else run up against this? Hi, I am trying to place a logo in my presentation using pdflatex, but the logo doesn't seem to be placed. The pdflatex output is there though, everything but the logo. Any idea? Remzi
