Page numbering query

2002-11-18 Thread jamesb3
Hi,
I'm just learing to use LyX, so I'm sorry if this is a bit of a
gumby-type question. I'm writing a large-ish report, and including
individual chapters as files in a 'master' file.
When I generate tables of contents, figures and lists, page numbers begin
from the beginning of the page of contents. I would like page numbering
to start at the beginning of my first chapter, and my title page,
abstract, and tables of contents, figures and tables to be numbered
consecutively with lower case roman numerals.
I have tried the LayTeX command
\pagenumbering
to restart page numbers at the beginning of my first chapter, but this
didn't seem to work.
I then tried the command
\pagenumbering{roman}
to try and convert numbering in selected sections to roman numerals, and
when this didn't work, I tried
renewcommand\thepage{roman}
(as per advice on the website), bt this didn't work either. Not sure If
I've got the wrong commands, or am putting them in the wrong place, or if
my approach is totally wrong. I have no prior knowledge of LayTeX, so I'm
not sure how to go about it.
Any tips?

James

Hi James

In the very beginning of the doc enter:

\pagenumbering{roman}

and on the top of the first page with arabic-numbers
enter:

\pagenumbering{arabic}
\setcounter{page}{7}

where the 7 of course is to be replaced with whatever page
you're at.
I didn't find the automatic way of seetting that number

You don't need to. Just use the command \pagenumbering{arabic} in ERT where you
want it to start.

document exchange between lyx 1.1.6fix4 and 1.2.0pre4 works?!

2002-11-18 Thread Jörn Lindmaier
Hello,

I am an windows user who uses lyx 1.1.6fix4 on a linuxServer via
winserver remote login. On this server ispell does not work corretly and
so I am tried another server on which lyx 1.2.0pre4 is installed. But
there I get lyx closes due to a bug everytime I try to insert a bib
reference.

Now I thought about this: writing on lyx 1.1.6fix4 and spell-checking on
the other server (and going back to the first server). Are there any
known problems that could occur when I exchange documents between these
two versions? (I think I have read about a problem concerning figures in
lyx...)

Best wishes,

1.1.6 probably won't read docs created with 1.2.

LyX not rendering graphics

2002-11-18 Thread Norbert Stribeck
Since more than a year I have watched the list and the discussion concerning
the problem that LyX renders graphics only sporadically on fast computers - I
still have the problem and tried the sporadic tips to solve the problem -
without success for SuSE 7.3 and SuSE 8.0. I have tried to update from 1.1.6
to 1.2.1, but was unable to compile the sources - because of the cc1plus
error. Now I have succeeded in part and feel that there might be somebody out
there knowing the ultimate solution. Here is what I did:

When I asked to check the dependencies, the output was:
# rpm -Uvh lyx-1.2.1-1rh8-xforms089.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
tetex-xdvi is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
tetex-latex is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
libstdc++.so.5   is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2)   is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
perl(Cwd) is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
perl(File::Basename)   is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
perl(FileHandle) is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
perl(lib) is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
perl(strict) is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
perl(vars) is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1

So I installed 1.2.1 from the binary rpm using --nodeps and supplied both
libstdc++.so.5.0.0 and libgcc_s.so.1 in /usr/lib (moreover, a symbolic link
to libstdc++.so.5 was generated and ldconfig was run).

Now LyX 1.2.1 works fine (even xdvi and PDF output), but I do not even see
graphics sporadically any more. Instead I get an error message in each
graphics box telling me that the conversion into a display format failed. In
fact, the message is in German and reads Fehler bei der Konvertierung in ein
darstellbares Format

I'm in a similar (sinking) boat. In previous versions of LyX, the
graphics would almost always render. At most, I would just have to
restart LyX and rendering would work again. Now that I've installed
1.2.1 for RH 8.0 and using xforms 0.89 (after upgrading to RH 8.0),
rendering just does NOT work at all. (Not quite true - it doesn't work
on eps files created by R.) This is on three Intel PCs all running RH
8.0 (one is a laptop, the other two are desktop systems). I can't be
sure the problem doesn't have something to do with Redhat 8.0. Or it may
be that all the eps files I'm creating come from R (they used to render
OK and they are eps files.) But I cannot fix it and have seen NOTHING on
the list that has helped. Someone did suggest turning on debuggind (lyx
-dbg graphics or lyx -dbg any) but that just tells me the conversion
doesn't work - even though all the software needed for the conversion is
readily available on all three systems - I can do it manually - and if
the conversion wasn't in the preferences I added it. LyX installed
differently on each system. On at least one I had to even get it to just
view in PS and PDF. Viewing in HTML gives a screwy message about the
file name having more than one period and that dvips can't handle it. I
have to rename the file so there is only one period. Fortunately I guess
I can live without rendering in LyX just so long as it prints and views OK.

Just for your information, I always use rpm -U --test before actually
installing the binary. rpm never reported any problem either in test
mode or when I actually installed the software. There were no conflicts
and it didn't complain about any missing software - LyX installed (as it
had in the past) without any error messages or warnings. Everything
seems to work except for rendering (and viewing on one system) out of
the box.

At least for me, the rendering error message is in English. I miss the
days when I could just install a new version of LyX and continue doing
actual work.

If anyone can explain how to fix this I would certainly appreciate it.

I had a similar problem, but I was under RH 7.0: graphics would
*never* show up under Lyx 1.2.1.

This weekend I got pissed about it and after a while I came to the
idea of reinstalling ImageMagick, uploading from 5.3.3. to 5.5.*.

It worked... seems that convert was failing before.

In any case there is room for improvement in the way images are
handled now, because the text jumps to the beginning when a new
image is rendered, and the conversion process takes a long time
in a document with several of them. Maybe the procedures should be
reviewed somehow..

i just recently switched to 1.2.1 from 1.0.9(i think) and noticed that
the new version doesn't seem to recognize eps figures as viable graphics
files. the browse options for insert-graphics gives only gif|jpg|gif|jpg|gz
as options and all of my figures(eps) display the message error converting
to loadable format. i remember this working last night on my laptop
(which also has 1.2.1). the dvi looks fine, but i would like to be able
to see the figures in the lyx document. any idea how to fix this?
thanks,
alex.

I have a fix for that that has been applied to the development

versions).

rab I imagine when LyX installs itself (I used an rpm), it looks for
rab helper programs and configures accordingly. But I have all of
rab them and they worked in 1.1.6fix3 so I'm not sure why things are
rab so flaky now. If it was just one machine, I could understand it
rab but not three (all running RH 8.0 - maybe it has to do with RH

This has probably to do with the versions of some utilities shipped

For the spellchecker, only the third option (use alternative language in the

LyX tries to be clever and takes the name of the document language as ispell
language option. This works sometimes, if the name of the babel file and the
name of the ispell/aspell dictionary are identical. Often, they are not (cf.
german vs. deutsch), and spell checking fails, unless you tell LyX the
actual name of the dictionary.

Most simple solution is to put unbreakable space and on the
special line and give it environment Date. However, the result is
ugly (you get one more blank line in the title). The right
solution is to put this into Layout/Preamble (but you may break
something):

\def\@maketitle{%
  \newpage
  \null
  \vskip 2em%
  \begin{center}%
  \let \footnote \thanks
 {\LARGE \@title \par}%
 \vskip 1.5em%
 {\large
\lineskip .5em%
\begin{tabular}[t]{c}%
  \@author
\end{tabular}\par}%
% comment out printing of date
 % and improper vertical space
 %\vskip 1em%
 %{\large \@date}%
  \end{center}%
  \par
  \vskip 1.5em}

Happy LyXing!

Re: What's the real name??

2002-11-18 Thread Christian Ridderström
My two cents...

First, quoting from:
http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=TeXpronounce

How should I pronounce TeX?

The 'X' stands for the lower case Greek letter Chi (the upper-case
Greek letter doesn't look in the least like a letter X) and is
pronounced by English-speakers either a bit like the 'ch' in the
Scots word 'loch' ([x] in the IPA) or like 'k'. It definitely
is not pronounced 'ks'.

and then quoting from
http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=latexpronounce

How should I pronounce LaTeX(2e)?

Lamport never recommended how one should pronounce LaTeX, but a
lot of people pronounce it 'Lay TeX' or perhaps 'Lah TeX' (with
TeX pronounced as the program itself; see the rules for TeX). It
is definitely not to be pronounced in the same way as the
rubber-tree gum. The 'epsilon' in 'LaTeX2e' is supposed to be
suggestive of a small improvement over the old LaTeX 2.09.
Nevertheless, most people pronounce the name as 'LaTeX-two-ee'.

and about LyX, I got the tip from someone that as Swede I can just
pronounce it as the Swedish word for luxury which happens to be lyx.
(And I know from experience too that Americans find it hard to distinguish
between [licks] and [lyx] :-)

hyperref package conflicts

Hello:
I have problems with the hyperref package.
It seems like it must have conflicts with a lot of packages.
I have it loaded *last* in the preamble, but even so it does

(note that it is a long, compound document and I only am sending a small
part of the base file).

Thanks,

Richard I am attaching one example for people to try. I would like to
Richard know if LyX can render this eps - my LyX 1.2.1 doesn't.

It works fine for me with 1.2.2cvs, in two different environments:

- redhat 7.1, xforms 0.89.5, ImageMagick 5.2.7, ghostscript 7.0

- tru64 4.0f, xforms 0.88.1, ImageMagick 3.7.8, ghostscript 7.0

Do you still have this problem if the file name does not contain
multiple dots?

Removing the extra periods allows the graphic to render. I hope this
will be fixed eventually because it will be very inconvenient not to be
able to use periods to make the file names more readable. With hundreds
of files, it is difficult to keep track of them with dos-like names.

Thanks.

New More Serious Problems with 1.2.1 - Partial Printing

2002-11-18 Thread Richard A. Bilonick
I have a 20 page document that I was previously working on using LyX
1.1.6fix3. It would print just fine - all 20 pages via postscript. If I
tried to view it through pdf, it would screw up some figure captions.
Using ps2pdf12 or ps2pdf13 manually rather than using ps2pdf seemed to
fix the problem. Now in 1.2.1, only the first 8 pages will print - EVEN
THOUGH all 20 pages show quite nicely in gv. If I try to print directly
from gv, again only the first 8 pages will print.

I can send the document if someone needs it to help diagnose the problem.

This is a much more serious problem because I need to be able to print
the documents and make them into pdf's. If I can't do that, there is not
much point to using LyX.

Why can gv view the entire document but not print it???

If it's a postscript printer, then there is probably some
non-standard/printer-incompatible postscript in your output --- this is why
the latest is not always the greatest. Star/OpenOffice have serious problems
here.

With latex, I found that ps printers (HP lasers) can't handle some compressed
image formats (png, jpeg) that have been converted to eps (with ImageMagik
convert or the Gimp). So I always convert images to xpm before converting
to eps.

Use protected spaces: CTRL-SPACE, like
First_M._Last
where _ is a protected space (CTRL-SPACE)

If that still splits your word_with_spaces (e.g. through hyphenation) you can
do an less elegant thing and type it in math-mode as text.

Instead of typing a normal space, hold ctrl and hit space for a
protected blank. It won't be broken across lines. (Hey, finally a question I

There is a way to prevent hyphenation/set hyphenation points in latex. I
remember reading sg. about it in the lyx documentation. I think it will be
much easier to just use text in mathed.

Page numbering query

2002-11-18 Thread jamesb3
Hi,
I'm just learing to use LyX, so I'm sorry if this is a bit of a
gumby-type question. I'm writing a large-ish report, and including
individual chapters as files in a 'master' file.
When I generate tables of contents, figures and lists, page numbers begin
from the beginning of the page of contents. I would like page numbering
to start at the beginning of my first chapter, and my title page,
abstract, and tables of contents, figures and tables to be numbered
consecutively with lower case roman numerals.
I have tried the LayTeX command
\pagenumbering
to restart page numbers at the beginning of my first chapter, but this
didn't seem to work.
I then tried the command
\pagenumbering{roman}
to try and convert numbering in selected sections to roman numerals, and
when this didn't work, I tried
renewcommand\thepage{roman}
(as per advice on the website), bt this didn't work either. Not sure If
I've got the wrong commands, or am putting them in the wrong place, or if
my approach is totally wrong. I have no prior knowledge of LayTeX, so I'm
not sure how to go about it.
Any tips?

James

document exchange between lyx 1.1.6fix4 and 1.2.0pre4 works?!

Now I thought about this: writing on lyx 1.1.6fix4 and spell-checking on
the other server (and going back to the first server). Are there any
known problems that could occur when I exchange documents between these
two versions? (I think I have read about a problem concerning figures in

LyX not rendering graphics

I sent a request for help some minutes ago --- the problem is solved! I had to
disable my ~/.lyx directory, and now it works and I see all the graphics

It is not very easy, especially since most of us do not run cjk-lyx,

You could try to run cjk-lyx under gdb, interrupt it with Ctrl-c and

Well now that I know I didn't (necessarily) screw things up, I can just
wait until the next version pr whenever it gets fixed. It was thinking
that I could fix it that made me obsess about this. Thanks for letting
me know.

P. S. I did upload a file produced by R you might want to use to test. I
can get some eps files to render but none (so far) from R 1.6.1.

I just checked and LyX 1.2.1 does render eps files from versions of R
prior to 1.6.1. Unfortunately I cannot tell what is the version of R. If
anyone needs an example file for comparison, please let me know.

Not from the lazy American pronounciation :-). Read it as you
wish.

 \documentclass[frenchb,dvips]{article}
I do not know why. I changed it to
 \documentclass[french,dvips]{article}
without the b and now it works.

frenchb.sty is -- beneath francais.sty and french.sty -- a valid babel file (I
don't know the differences)

So the best solution to fix this is not to change the babel sty name or a
symlink, but the use alternative language field in
Preferences-Language-Spellchecker. There you should enter the name of the
ispell dictionary (e.g. french)

Jürgen.
