missing character (Lyx on Mac)
Hi everybody, I've just installed Lyx and even though things went fairly smooth, I'm struggling with a bunch of minor issues. (Using the latest Lyx version, Mac OS 10.4.2, Powerbook with a german keyboard. Gerben Wierda's TeX, ghostscript8, Freetype2, libiconf, libwmf, ImaheMagick, cm-super packages, ran the Lyx Installer script) - Lyx won't recognize the ^ key at all (as in x^3 for x cubed). It does recognizeshift ^ though, which correctly yields°on my german keyboard. - Whenever I click View - DVI nothing happens. Am I not supposed to get some kind of window displaying the Latex source code??? I'm planning to word process my math assignments (bachelor of computer science), so any help is highly appreciated! Thanks again, Max

About Beamer and Lyx
Hi everybody I think there is something wrong with Beamer class and Lyx. I have already found in the mailing list someone else having the same problems but I could not find the solution. In my case I have started to prepare a presentation (just title, authors and Outline section) and wanted to check if everything was ok. Therefore I have choosed View-PDF(pdflatex) and the error issued by latex was Undefined control sequence. \lyxframeend {}\section*{Outline} etc... I have compared a working presentation with this one and I have found in the Latex exported file that section %% Textclass specific LaTeX commands. \AtBeginDocument{ \let\origtableofcontents=\tableofcontents [EMAIL PROTECTED] {\gobbletableofcontents}} \def\gobbletableofcontents#1{\origtableofcontents} } \makeatletter [EMAIL PROTECTED]@lyxframestop}% [EMAIL PROTECTED]@ifnextchar{\@@lyxframe}{\@@lyxframe*}}% \def\@@lyxframe#1[EMAIL PROTECTED]@@@lyxframe#1}{\@@@lyxframe#1[]}} \def\@@@lyxframe#1[EMAIL PROTECTED]{\@lyxframe#1[} {\lyxframe#1[*][}} \def\@lyxframe#1[EMAIL PROTECTED]lyxframe#1[#2]} {\lyxframe#1[#2][]}} \long\def\lyxframe#1[EMAIL PROTECTED] \frame#1[#2][#3]{\frametitle{#4}#5}} \makeatother \newenvironment{centercolumns}{\begin{columns}[c]}{\end{columns}} \newenvironment{topcolumns}{\begin{columns}[t]}{\end{columns}} \def\lyxframeend{} % In case there is a superfluous frame end was missing. These commands are defined in the beamer.layout file and I suppose they should be inserted by Lyx in the temporary Latex file. The question is: why does Lyx sometimes export these commands and sometime it does not? I have exported today both presentations, I suppose there are some minor details in the skeleton presentation which issue an internal error in Lyx. Thanks a lot MAX

Maybe inkscape doesn't include the right fonts into the exported eps-file sometimes, but I don't really care as Arial works fine. I had the exact opposite problem. Arial didn't work -- Inkscape said it was n't there, even though I installed Arial on my Mandriva Linux 2007 in the norma l way. SteveT I had some problems with »extra signs« in Hoefler Text that displayed well in Inkscape as well as in LyX (using XeTeX) but for some reason were not there any more when including the SVG in LyX. I am writing a work on islamic political thought, so there is a lot of Arabic transliteration I use. Many of the letters, such as in Madîna, ‘Â’ischa and so on (I have no idea, whether they will be displayed correctly on this list, in my mail client they do (Outlook users usually experience problems, e.g.)) simply were not displayed correctly any more. Anyway, when exporting the SVG in Inkscape to PDF, the fonts are automatically embedded (as far as I remember) and inserting the PDF in LyX is painless. My more simple graphics are still SVG directly in LyX, as it is more comfortable to only make changes in one file. Anyway, I think that Inkscape really is the problem here, not LyX. By the way, just for typographic reasons, you know of the typographic criticism of Arial, do you :)? Max
Therefore I have choosed View->PDF(pdflatex) and the error issued by latex was Undefined control sequence. \lyxframeend {}\section*{Outline} etc... I have compared a working presentation with this one and I have found in the Latex exported file that section %% Textclass specific LaTeX commands. \AtBeginDocument{ \let\origtableofcontents=\tableofcontents [EMAIL PROTECTED] {\gobbletableofcontents}} \def\gobbletableofcontents#1{\origtableofcontents} } \makeatletter [EMAIL PROTECTED]@lyxframestop}% [EMAIL PROTECTED]@ifnextchar<{\@@lyxframe}{\@@lyxframe<*>}}% \def\@@lyxframe<#1>[EMAIL PROTECTED]@@@lyxframe<#1>}{\@@@lyxframe<#1>[]}} \def\@@@lyxframe<#1>[EMAIL PROTECTED]<{\@lyxframe<#1>[} {\lyxframe<#1>[<*>][}} \def\@lyxframe<#1>[EMAIL PROTECTED]lyxframe<#1>[#2]} {\lyxframe<#1>[#2][]}} \long\def\lyxframe<#1>[EMAIL PROTECTED] \frame<#1>[#2][#3]{\frametitle{#4}#5}} \makeatother \newenvironment{centercolumns}{\begin{columns}[c]}{\end{columns}} \newenvironment{topcolumns}{\begin{columns}[t]}{\end{columns}} \def\lyxframeend{} % In case there is a superfluous frame end was missing.
Re: About Beamer and Lyx
The situation is the following: - if I insert an EndFrame layout at the end of the document, I can compile and view the document w/o any problem. - if the EndFrame is inserted at the end of other frames and NOT at the end of the document, I can compile the lyx file but I can not see it with acroread. In particular latex issues an error ('"file ended while scanning use of \lyxframe.") but lyx does not recognize it and compiles further. - w/o any EndFrame layout lyx stops and issues an error ("Undefined control sequence. \lyxframeend"). missing character (Lyx on Mac)
- Whenever I click View -> DVI nothing happens. Am I not supposed to get some kind of window displaying the Latex source code??? I'm planning to word process my math assignments (bachelor of computer science), so any help is highly appreciated! Thanks again, Max
Countering more paragraphs
Hy everybody, the latex-file I use provides a secnumdepth of 8, this means 9 numbered headers. Meanwhile my LyX knows all of the (subsubsubsub...) paragraphs, but I can't see how to get a useful countering on sreen. Because this is for an easy-doing-user I want to have a layout which an countering like this for the standard-paragraphs. Hopefully need no help at the developer-list. Thanks for your tought. MAX

LyX on Windows Vista
I am using 1.53 on Windows Vista. I found pdflatex easiest to get what I need. However I have two problems with it: 1. When I do view-PDF(PDFLATEX), it will ask me if I want to create the directory for the output files. Is there a way to remove this unnecessary user input? 2. If the pdf is open in Acrobat, the update would fail. Is there a way to avoid this? Thanks. Max

I used the alternative installer. Was that the difference? Thanks. Max Uwe Stöhr wrote: Max Bian schrieb: 1. What installer have you used to install LyX, the standard, or the alternative one? regards Uwe

I tried the official installer but I got the same problems and more. It will not launch the Acrobat program to show the pdf file when I selection View-PDF (PDFLATEX). I tried both installer and updated the Acrobat. With the official installer, problem #1 is fixed. I still have problem with #2. LyX error: I cannot write on file xxx.pdf. If you can get it almost right with the LyX settings for Natbib then I would stick with it. There is a Natbib manual which is not too long and you can find a lot about Natbib in Google Groups. I would try to add some extra setup information for Natbib to the LaTeX preamble in LyX - Document settings to get it working. I have tried all my options but I am not able to change this style file to move to second line. (…) Hi Rohit, I suppose you work with Natbib (LyX - Document Settings - Bibliography). For Natbib you can set the style of in-text citations (via the preamble), which I assume you did, and set the style of the list of references by choosing a BibTeX-Style such as unsrt.bst. You will either need to find a style suiting your needs, or, if your needs are too special, make up your on style. This can be done with the command line tool makebst, which you can find via your preferred internet search engine. Missing files In TEMP dir
Hallo, As LaTeX user I tested the LyX program, converting a document It is a nice program, thank you. I had one major problem: Some files of the document directory (the .bib file with its original name, modified .sty files, and so on) were not copied into the temp dir. Therefore, I had to install the modified style file into localtexmf, copy the .bib file after each start of lyx into the temp dir. (I need it e.g. because of packages multibib, pdfx.) My request: It would be great, if there would be just two checkboxes in the document settings x copy all files from document directory to tempdir x include subdirectories Maybe a security question showing the number of files) Then the compilation of the document would really be equivalent to Latex. RE: lyx freezes during \HTML (MS WORD)\ export
Hallo, I had similar problems of the export (Word HTML), with Lyx 1.6.8, as described here. First, I wanted to tell, that it is not bad to have both configurations: - HTML (with elyxer) is more stable and works out of the box - HTML, Word (with htlatex) recognises more packages (if it works.) Apparently, Htlatex recognises more packages. For example, in my tests I found: If I have author - year - citation with package natbib, then elyxer exports only numbers [1], [2],. but htlatex exports the correct citations (author, 2011). So, I undertook the effort to configure htlatex. For my Windows system, I found that the missing points of the configuration of htlatex are as follows: - in the LyX converter options I need htlatex $$i html, word symbol/! -cvalidate (with double quotes instead of single quotes for windows) - you must assure, that the program ImageMagick is installed and in the system path (or in the PATH prefix of LyX). With the Lyx for Windows AltInstaller this is done automatically. - In the LaTeX distribution the packages with tex4ht and htlatex must be installed. If MikTeX is used (not texlive), then the file htlatex.bat has to be corrected: In the last two lines, there are wrong paths. For a standard installation, I corrected to tex4ht %1 -i/tex4ht/ht-fonts/%3 -ewin32/tex4ht.env t4ht %1 %4 -eC:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\tex4ht\base\win32\tex4ht.env After these corrections, everything worked fine on my system. In case of trouble, start LyX from a dos window, then the error messages can be seen. If there is an error with convert.exe, then ImageMagick is not properly installed. If there is an error tex4ht.env not found, the paths in htlatex.bat are incorrect. Finally two other remarks: - To open the document from elyxer in Word: Open in Firefox, then make a copy with save as, document type website complete. This copy can directly be opened in Word. Also, the graphics and the .css file are copied in a suitable subdirectory. - As a very easy to use converter, I found that tth.exe ( tex to html ) is very good. Export your document from lyx into latex, then execute tth -e2 document.tex. Gives a very good html Document (similar to elyxer). Regards, Max Funk

Change between latex distributions
Hallo, I installed the new lyx 1.6.9 and texlive 2010 in cygwin. However, lyx uses always the old tetex-distribution.contained in cygwin. Is there a possibility to change between distributions? AFAIK, there must be a setting path to latex.exe or similar... But I absolutely didn't find it. Regards
Re: Change between latex distributions
You have to add that path to Tools-Preferences-Paths-PATH prefix... pay attention to use posix paths... Thank you very much :-) Meanwhile I succeeded. My path from the default Texlive Cygwin Install was /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/i386-cygwin Then I made Tools-Reconfigure and rebooted Lyx. Now I made Tools-TeX Information and checked Show Path Now there was still shown the old path: /usr/share... Now I had to press button Rescan. Then I really get the new path /usr/local/texlive... (That was my Problem: I always omitted this step because I thought intuitively that Tools-Reconfigure would do everything)
Vs: How to use Enhant on Lyx
Yes, Hunspell is that bad when it comes to Finnish, in fact I'm not sure the dictionaries for Finnish even exist for Hunspell. I probably could try to install Ubuntu (I don't have enough space on my C drive so I'll have to find out if I can put it on my D drive, I have no previous experience using Linux). I hope support for Enchant will be added on the Windows installers of Lyx - I'm not a programmer so there is no hope that I myself could do it at the moment. Hi, what's your language? Finnish? Is it really that bad with Hunspell?
New layout
I am using LyX 1.6 on Windows Vista. How do I define a new layout that does the following: 1) Take an image and some text. 2) In the backend, get LyX to place the text in a box, the image in another box, then put the two boxes in a larger box side-by-side 3) Automatically number the outer box and display a label in final output. Is this possible? Thanks. Max

Is this possible? Yes, this can be done---anything you can do in LaTeX you can do in LyX---though not easily, because LyX does not support multi-argument commands or environments very well. But you could do it with a couple optional arguments to a command defined in a layout. What's not clear to me is how to deal with the image. Do you want just to give the path, or do you want to use LyX's support for graphics? You can probably do it either way, rh
Re: New layout
Below is the latex code I need to use. I am still not sure how to define a layout with the correct latex definition so I can pass the text and the graph to it without manually adding all the boxes (minipages). I'd like to be able to see the graphics like when I include a graph and edit the text freely. It is ok if I am limited to one paragraph but being able to enter multiple paragraphs is desirable. Thanks. Can you please give more details on how this can be done? Well, the first thing you have to do is figure out how to do what you want to do in LaTeX. You'll need a command or environment that works like this, more or less: \begin{graphbox}[text goes here] %in here is the graphic you want to display, the way LyX would format it, e.g.: \includegraphics{graphics/brown} \end{graphbox} and the result should be the output you want. Once you've got that, turning it into a LyX layout isn't terribly hard. Have a look at the customization manual, if you haven't already. But something more or less like this will work: Style GraphicBox LatexType environment LatexName graphbox OptionalArgs 1 Preamble %here you'll include the LaTeX definitions you need EndPreamble End You can tweak this endlessly. rh

First of all, my work experience with LyX was really great so far and I don’t think, I will ever switch back to the solutions I used before (Word, OOWriter, Pages, Scribus and plain LaTeX). However, all through my work progress I had these vref-Errors fading in and out all the time. Usually, they could be fixed by deleting them and reinserting them again; in some cases where they could not be fixed, I tried not to bother and thought about simply writing them manually at the very end. But now there is this one error that I cannot solve, I cannot even find the proper the reference that it seems to refer to (even though double-clicking on the error seems to take me to the place in the LyX document): Package varioref Error: \vref } Please check the pages in question. You might need to replace the \vref or \vpageref by a normal \(page)ref to stop LaTeX running forever. My LyX preamble can be found here: http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0303098/public/lyxpreamble.txt The error appears to happen somewhere here: falsch \emph default zu entscheiden und dass ein wohlgesonnener Einzelherrscher, der immer das Allgemeinwohl im Blick habe, hilfreich dabei sein könnte, die Gesellschaft in moderne Herrschaftsstrukturen zu überführen. Symbol in manual
Hi. I am curious about the symbol in the help documents. There is the sideways triangle used when referring to menu item, for example, Insert-Box. The - actually looks like a triangle in LyX. How do I insert a symbol like that? Thanks. Max
Flex insets
In layout directory stdinsets.inc, there are definitions of Info:menu, Info:shortcut, and Info:shortcuts. It appears that these are the ones to define the menu/shortcut styles in the help files. However, I don't see there is anyway to use these from LyX menu. Actually, the definitions in Logical Markup module is listed in Edit-Text Style. I am a little confused. Shouldn't these Info:??? styles be available from the LyX Menu, like Algorithm, Box, ERT, etc? Or am I only supposed to copy them and make my own in a layout or module file? I am using lyx 1.6 on Windows. Thanks. Max
InsetLayout CharStyle:MenuItem
If I have InsetLayout CharStyle:MenuItem, it works. If I have InsetLayout CharStyle:Menu_Item in a layout module, LyX displays it as a red box. I like the latter since it displays a space in the Edit-Text Style menu. Not sure why it would be red though. Any idea? I am using LyX 1.6 on Windows. Thanks. Max
Toolbar bug?
I am using LyX 1.6 on Windows Vista. If I have the three toolbar panels on three separate rows, it works fine. If I put two of them on one line, LyX will not be able to restore them correctly when I start it next time: the second one on the row will go all the way to the right and I cannot see any icons. Anyone else seeing this? Max

Re: Bad PDF generated from LyX
Never mind. The problem appears to be caused by the binary encoding format I selected. I selected ASCII encoding the problem has disappeared. Btw, for anyone who includes screenshots in their documents, enabling Image Interpolation in Photoshop EPS conversion will create a much better looking PDF file. Including bitmap files directly will lead to very fuzzy results when the PDF display resolution does not match the native capture resolution of the screenshot. LyX can’t find sprachwerker.bst
Hi everyone, I am trying to set up sprachwerker.bst for use in LyX, so I can use Natbib and a German bibliography style for linguistics (other than dinat and more Harvard-like). I installed it in ~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bst run sudo texhash and yes, kpsewhich sprachwerker.bst tells me, that it is exactly there. However, in LyX I cannot find it at all (although I ran Reconfigure several times). I tried to display the bibliography via ERT, manually choosing \bibliographystle{sprachwerker} and so on but it still does not work. I updated both MacTeX from 2007 to 2008 and LyX from 1.5.4 to 1.6.0 (all on latest Tiger/PPC) but the problem still exists. However, exporting to LaTeX and compiling through TeXShop works. I even restarted my computer and reconfigured LyX several times but the style still does not show up in LyX. What more can I do? How to change the distance between caption and the figure/table?

References in captions
I need to put references in the table/figure captions. For example, Figure. Screenshot of a nice program called Lyx. From [12]. However I don't want to have it (From [12]) show up in the list-of-figure of list-of-table. I know I can do it with two captions, one short and one long. The short one goes to the LOF/LOT and the long one appears only in the text. I am wondering if there is a way to make it easier. i.e., is it possible to have lyx automatically generate the two captions, one short and one long, from one single caption when there is a citation reference detected in the caption? But the result is different: with 1.16, I have both numerical key and the bibtex key shown in the bibliography section, but only the numerical key shown with 1.20. Re: drftcite requires cite? And some other problems with 1.20
Alright! I went through the steps carefully and finally found the problem! This is indeed the babel problem. Sorry for the mix-up. In my 1.16 documents, I didn't use the babel package at all. When I open it with lyx 1.2, the default preference of lyx1.2 has \usepackage{babel} in the lang opt/language, so the babel package is inserted into the document, after all other packages. The cite, drftcite packages do need the babel to be loaded first, if the babel is used. Please note this is just opposite to what other people have said: http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/msg34407.html http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/msg34641.html Since I do not use babel at all for my older documents written with lyx 1.16, I don't have any problem. Right now, I strongly believe people are using different versions of latex or different versions of latex packages! That probably explains the inconsistancy between machines. I have send my non-working examples out several times to people and they told me nothing was wrong. I don't see the usefullness of an example this time so I will not include one here. And people should move on to do something else. However they would need to clear the selection first if that feature is there before they can do anything. For example, I want to insert a space after the pasted text, I need to first unselect it and then type space otherwise the selected text is cleared! If you check other editors, the most common behavior is unselect after paste. 2a. The Do not show graphics in the preferences is not honored. If you set an override in the graphics, it will over ride the general prefs. This again is intended and correct IMO. What it means is that the preference in the preference dialog is useless. I do not mean to close/or open the floats, I mean render or not render the graphics in the open floats. Yes, maybe ... This implementation is not needed if the reference setting I described in 2a is used. 4. The graphics conversion takes too much CPU! A way to cap the CPU usage is useful. Why ? Which xforms version / convertor are you using ? Try using the netpbm tools instead, if you're using convert Why? I have tens of eps graphics in the paper. I am using xforms 0.89. Addition, the scroll-mouse seems not working either. 6. Footnote in the section heading is not working any more. Worked in 1.16fix4 and prior versions. Already solved. Works perfectly for me - testcase please 7. Mouse selection too difficult to use. If I try to select lines of texts and figures, the scrolling will be so fast that I cannot stop at the end point easily. Means of marking start and stop point to make a selection or distance-out-of-bounds scrolling speed variation is useful. The last part means the scrolling speed will vary during a selection scrolling: depends on how far the mouse is out of the bonds, the farther the faster the scrolling... Great! That fixed the problem! Thank you. Max Jean-Marc Lasgouttes wrote: Max == Max Bian [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Max Mandrake 8.2! What's broken? How do I fix it? The urw-fonts package installs a wrong description of fonts (this is fixed for future mandrake releases, AFAIK). To fix it, edit the /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/fonts.dir file, so that the line which reads s05l.pfb -URW-Symbol-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-urw-fontspecific is changed to (only urw is changed to adobe) s05l.pfb -URW-Symbol-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-adobe-fontspecific Then restart the X server (or reboot if you do not know how to do that) and things should work again. That is, I want the WYSIWYG feature within the caption, but the LATEX enviornment doesn't seem to allow it. Basically, I'd like to be able to put math formulas, equation cross references, etc., within the caption without having to type the raw latex. Probably there's a better way for me to insert the caption, but I don't know it. Now it seems that I have to do this manually with LATEX boxes for \begin{center} and \end{center}. How do I make figures centered by default? Appendix not working correctly
Hi, The last part of my current Lyx document is an Appendix. For this I switched on the Appendix in the menu. The problem is that in the final output file (Postscript) Appendix A is shown correctly, but all the following ones are displayed as Chapter B, Chapter C etc. instead of Appendix B This is both in the table of contents as well as in the actual headlines. Does anybody know a solution? Thanks Max

Hi. I really need to get the subfigure package to put the label on the left (or right) of the figures. It takes too much space at the bottom. Label at left is quite oftenly seen in books, papers. As I understand, all figures should take one page by itself and labeled as Figure XX only, where XX is the number. And all the captions should be listed in a sheet seperate from all the figures. Strange eps problem
Hi. I included a eps figure in lyx saved from photoshop 6 with the jpeg hires option. It looks fine in ghostview/ghostscript. However, the generated PS document with this figure included will show the page number in ghostview only upto the page where the figure is included. For example, if the figure is on page 5, only page 1 to 5 is listed in the quick access panel in ghostview. No other eps has had this type of effect, so I don't think it is a gv/gs bug. Anyone has a clue? This figure is large so I am not including it here. If you are interested, I can send you a copy. Thank you. Max __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: pstex2eps: a very helpful utility
It works for rectangles and math formula I put in there. If it doesnt work for other stuff, it is easy to work around it: just put an invisible box around the figure in case anything happens.
