Hi, Yes, having a similar experience. Not jumping to end of messages though. In fact I can't figure out the command to get it to do this at all if someone could let me know as command + down arrow no longer seems to work. Instead, focus seems to shift around of its own accord. I've had to rescue several accidentally deleted items from the trash so if anyone knows how to stabilize this it'd be much appreciated. Re: File sharing and permissions problems
I don't know if this is the right way to do things, or if it will work in your situation, but I recently had to take control of another user's files on my wife's computer. At any rate, if you open up the folder in Finder, you can navigate to the file. Do a [vo][shift][m] on the file and choose Get Info. In that dialogue box you have the ability to set permissions. The interesting part of this dialogue box is the action button. When you press it, you can have the permission changes you have made apply to all subsequent files and folders. I am wondering if this may be helpful as you may have set the sharing permissions on the parent folder and those permissions have not cascaded down to the child folders. May be worth a try. Re: Bookshare, Unarchiver, after ML
There are a number of ways I have done this: 1. Typically, the titles are partial titles with the extensions, and the slightest differentiation in spelling will not find them for you, so you could use spotlight, finder, etc., to search for files with the extension .xml -- typically, the most recent one will show first. 2. Go into whatever folder you have the book in, and look for it. If the .xml file isn't there, open the folder with the book's title, and arrow down until you find the .xml file. Hitting enter should open Safari and place you at the top with the Bookshare notice. 3. Of course, if you know the truncated title, write that with the .xml extension in spotlight, and it should come up. I am sure there are more tech-savvy ways to do this, but these are what work for me. I've noticed that over the past year or so, newly uploaded books which I download from Bookshare have an XML file available, and I don't have to run unarchiver or put in my password. With some older books, I still have to. I never know which will be the case until I've downloaded a book and attempted to open it. Re: File sharing and permissions problems
Hi Jeff, Thanks for this tip. I learned about this option on a call to Apple support a few weeks ago. I tried changing the permissions there rather then in System Preferences I tried several different times and for the longest time didn't see any success. I still don't have most of the files sharing correctly but one folder on one computer, the Downloads folder, did start to show up as a separate volume and I could share with it. still the same folder in the shared HD folder says No Permission To Read. and it will not open. Do you have a large user folder shared that is working for all sub folders including downloads, music, movies and such? In the shared area in the info tab I've changed owner to my user account. should it be something else? I think I tried Admin and can try that again. I really appreciate your feedback on this. I have the feeling this powerful tool is not used by many who would find it helpful. It seems pretty straight forward in Mountain Lion System Preferences. That is it seems straight forward but I have only some of the desired files sharing. Bean Dafault Font Settings
Hello everyone, Forgive my slight frustration, but as I am attempting to migrate from Windows gradually, I know there will be those instances where it will not be likely to avoid from using JAWS. I am a fan of using Windows and JAWS because when going blind, this is the first introduction I had to accessible technology. One thing I observe as I begin tackling the word processing aspect of the Macintosh is the edit navigation for changing font criteria is roughly the same. I can see how to change font, margin, and general characteristics of a document, but how can I make these the default within Bean for example? Looked at archives for Pages, but I did not clearly understand how to keep my changes permanent, which is what I want. Within Bean, I have selected generic new document template. I click on document settings, and VO-right arrow to change font, but it does not appear my changes are accepted when relaunching the application. Sorry this note has been so lengthy. thank you all for the help. :) Sent from my iMac Twitter: TheOrangeCircle -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Bean Dafault Font Settings
I haven't used Bean but some apps, like TextEdit, have preference settings for the default font. Hello, I have done a clean-install of 10.8 on my new air since I had very strange problems with my air and , I was using in installation of 10.8 with some peaces of 10.7.x, 10.6.x and 10.5.x from my time-machine backup. So, a clean install seems a good idea to determine if I had software-problems or other problems. I have discovered that I can't import all my preferences of voiceover even if I use separated vopref-files by item or if I use a global vopref-file that was created before or after the introduction of mountain Lion. I can't understand this at all since that bug was also announced since 10.7 and since there where also other comments on this lists about this treads, I am shore others have reported this also. Even, the speech bugs with the nuance voices aren't fixed where some things are spoken strange if there is a dot in the word without spaces before or after the dot. This is also a bug since 10.7 and, one year and a major release later, no changes in this. Do they have other priorities are there not enough people, is the last time of voiceover announced and perhaps something new is coming (with new problems of course like outspoken before voiceover)? Re: Bookshare, Unarchiver, after ML
I solved the problem. It turns out that I can not unzip books downloaded previous to ML. The books I just downloaded opened just fine, opened, and transferred to the Stream like a charm. I am so relieved. On Aug 20, 2012, at 8:51 AM, Christine Grassman cgrassman1...@gmail.com wrote: There are a number of ways I have done this: 1. Re: Cool discovery about Notification Center in Mountain Lion
You can actually just click an Notifications with the up and down arrow and it opens the Notification Center where you can turn on Do Not Disturb for 24 hours. If you go up into your extras menu bar area where your icons are like the notification center, if you go over to the notifications area, then make sure your actual mouse pointer is on the icon with vo+command+F5, if you then click your literal mouse/track pad, sorry, vo+command+space isn't gonna do the trick here, you literally! have to click the actual mouse, but anyway, if you click the physical mouse, now here's the trick though... while! holding down your option key, you're not gonna think anything happened from a Voiceover standpoint, however, lookat what you just did! Vo away and then back to the notificatino center icon! Cool! Huh! You just toggled on Do not Disturb for one whole day, 24 hours! Now, if you wanna toggle dnd back off, just do the same thing... option+literally click the icon again. Notice, this was not a typo on my part. I am perfectly aware that control clicking is your context shortcut menu. That isn't! what I'm talking about. I do literally mean the option key, not? the control key. Badges in YoruFukurou
When I launch YoruFukurou, each time I get new tweets in my timeline, mentions, or for that mind, DM's, it keeps updating with a badge, for lack of better term alert in my dock. So, recently, when I looked down in my dock, for example, it said, YoruFukurou 200 something odd items. This isn't per, sey, an issue, but, I do wonder if I can turn it off where it won't put the new item count with the icon in the dock. maybe I'm just weird, but I'd rather it not tell me that. I looked in the preferences under notifications, and also under account notifications, but I don't see any way to shut that off, unless it's berried, and I'm missing something. Obviously, there is nothing in the notification center preferences either under system prefs. I'm on version 2.76 of YoruFukurou, using mountain Lion, if that helps. I've used this method for several years. However, it's the older version of QuickTime, which is now dubbed QuickTime 7, that has the easy access to A/V controls of pitch, speed, etc. that was used for the scripts, and while this still works (and provides different playback options -- all accessible through the GUI with VoiceOver), it's no longer included by default with operating system distributions starting with Lion; you have to download it separately. I myself, in mountain Lion never've done it, but apparently starting in mountain Lion, you can just hit shift with the arrow keys like normal. Before that though, I think you had to interact first with the item that you wanted to select, then use your standard selection commands. To simplify things, you can't import VoiceOver Preferences from an earlier version of Mac OS X with ease. Does anyone know how to use Garage Band on Mountain Lion to record a podcast? Text Detective
HiRachel I have a question about text detective? It says to use unlock mode when doing the scan. What if you forget? I just did that and it sounded like it went in to unlock mode automatically. However, when I checked it, it was still locked. So, I unlocked it and start over. Do you have to do that? Badges in the dock.
Hi list! I hope everyone is well! I was just reading list and saw some people talking about dock badges. (like how many unread mails you do have, unread tweets in youru fucurou etc). How ever, I can't see them with voice over. It just reads the name of the app and thats it. Is something broken or is there a setting somewhere to disable or enable it? keyboard randomly switching function key settings in ML
I'm using a SpaceSaver M external USB keyboard on an MBP13 circa 2008 running Mountain Lion. Occasionally, for no reason I can spot, the keyboard will switch from using the function keys as hardware keys, the way it's supposed to, to using the function keys as software keys, what I don't want. Thus, for a while, F-11 and F-12 will decrease and increase volume respectively; then, suddenly, they will open Spaces or Dashboard. The solution to this problem is to put the computer to sleep, and then wake it up again. But Im wondering if there's a way to stop it altogether? Thanks. :) • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Text Detective
Hi Eugenia, The tips do say to unlock the orientation, however, since the app goes into landscape mode, automatically, I think not unlocking it shouldn't set you back at all. If, for some reason, it does, then you can try to unlock the orientation and try again. If your scanning experiences are the same, then you can choose what method to use. Re: keyboard commands for iOS devices using bluetooth?
Try vo space to double tap. Or, with quick navigation on, toggled by the left and right arrow being pressed together, you can press up/down arrow together. The vo keys are the control and option keys, which are the 2nd and 3rd keys on the bottom left row. The keys in order from left to right are as follows, using an apple wireless keyboard: function, control, option, command, space, another command key, and the option key. Then the normal arrows. Hi Mike, Thanks for the help. Let me explain to you what it is that I am trying to do. I am using Audio Highjack Pro to record both my voice and my system sound. Fwd: tables not recognized by VO in Textedit
Hi all, I was surprised to get the below response. I normally get the usual we'll investigate form letter, but this is the first time they have said they confirmed my findings. Here's to a fix in 10.8.1! Begin forwarded message: Please include the line below in follow-up emails for this request. Follow-up: 223355164 Hello, Thank you for your email and for bringing this to our attention. We have been able to reproduce your findings. We appreciate the feedback and wanted to let you know that Apple will be investigating these issues. Unfortunately we cannot comment on when it may be resolved. Apple Accessibility Hello, Today I tried to insert a table into a Textedit document I created. Two odd things happened: 1. After I entered the number of rows, I was able to enter the number of columns. After entering columns, though, everything in the table dialog was dimmed. Closing the dialog seemed to be my only recourse, meaning I could not change my mind about the row or column counts. 2. More importantly, vo seemed unable to see the table. It read a great many new line characters, but no table at all. This was very disappointing as I had hoped to be able to fill in the data for the table once inserted and, in so doing, format the information in a visually pleasing manner (something made nearly impossible without tables for sets of data). Please pass this along so that vo is able to read and edit tables in Textedit. I imagine vo-arrowing to each cell and then typing into that cell whatever text belongs there, once interacting with the table as a whole. I am on a Mini running 20.8. Thank you for your time. Re: tables not recognized by VO in Textedit
Using the number, could you? I am not trying to be difficult, but I make it a point to not report anything I have not personally experienced. I have only ever used Textedit and do not have Pages or other exitors, so I cannot comment on any lack of table support therein. As I said, I'm not trying to be difficult here, it's just that I only report what I experience. On Aug 20, 2012, at 8:17 PM, Matthew Campbell wrestling.ch...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Alex. cool discovery in mail
Hi all, I wanted to let you know of a cool command I just discovered in mail, though most of you probably know it already. As you arrow through messages, you can hold shift and the message spoken is selected. When you first press shift and an arrow key, the message you were on as well as the one you land on are both selected. This is great since I can just select a bunch of messages and delete them, instead of deleting one by one and having that imap refresh annoyance restart the speaking of messages every time. Anyway, I just thought I'd share in case someone didn't know. If you get gibberish text, the page may be upside down. or, you may be too far, or too close to the text. the tips say to hold it about a forearm's length away. Or perhaps 6-8 inches from the page. The 4, you'll just need to keep practicing to get useable results. :) On Aug 20, 2012, at 5:35 PM, Lisette Wesseling lisettewessel...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Anyone got any hints on using this app? Re: Garage Band
Scott, After you are done recording you can actually just copy and paste the file itself into a Garage Band Project. You can open a new project and once it is there just go to where your file is saved in the Finder and copy it. Then go back to Garage Band, press Enter to move to the beginning of your track and paste. One easy way to record yourself and your voice over in a single track is to just open quicktime and start a new audio file, then turn the audio playback on. There is a delay but this will loop your voice through your system so all you would need to do is one recording on system audio and since your voice is now coming through your system it will be recorded. The delay is a little weird but at least you don't have to line tracks up and you just have it in one track. I don't do this recording skype calls though. I am still working out the kinks here but it is better to have two tracks with two people so you can edit them individually as necessary. I have been trying to find a ood way to do this but haven't got it to work yet. I have started to record a Skype session and my input with the plan to merge them in Garage Band but the Skype session always eliminates the silence which makes aligning them impossible I made sure that the silence monitoring was off but I still have the same problem. I will let you know when I come up with a solution to this. I hope this has been helpful. If you have more questions or anything let me know. We can give Skype a go if you would like. I am free most evenings. Take care!! Mike On Aug 20, 2012, at 6:35 PM, Scott Rumery blindfait...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Mike, Thanks for the help. Re: cool discovery in mail
Hi Alex, Just to let you know, holding down the shift key and arrowing through is general way to select (highlight) multiple contiguous items. It works in other tables, too. You can select multiple files for deletion this way in Finder, or select multiple tracks in iTunes to use to either create a new playlist from selection or delete from your library. (What's more fun is doing non-contiguous selection!) Re: cool discovery in mail
Hold up though. You forgot something *really!* important about this method. This only works if cursor tracking is disabled. 1. With cursor tracking enabled, select the first msg you want to begin selecting noncontiguously from. By the way, also, be sure you're interacting with the table first before you try this. 2. Turn off cursor tracking with vo+shift+F3. 3. Press vo+down arrow until you get to the next item you wish to select. 4. Now, press vo+command+space bar to select the item. 5. Keep vo down arrowing until you see the next item to be selected, then repeat step 4. The reason this is so important to understand first before trying this method is because if your cursor tracking is enabled, then as soon as you vo+down arrow, you're gonna deselect the previous item and just move down the list as if you were navigating the table normally not even caring about selecting things to start with. If cursor tracking is off, then your voiceover cursor can freely move without having to worry about your mouse pointer or your keyboard focus tracking along. Actually, he's not kidding! I did see a version 1.0 for the Mac way way back in the days, but God Jesus! That had to be like OS8, or 9! This was like, even before the days of Voiceover, and I don't really think they did much with it. I don't think Melsoft even did anything past 1.0. It was so darn limited from what I've been told, trust me, even if you used Outspoken, it most likely wouldn't a been worth it. Why not give VLC a go. I really like it for what it is. Re: cool discovery in mail
I'm not sure, but it works here with cursor tracking on. Very strange. However, whatever works, works. So, chalk this up to who knows. Take Care John D. Applications Not Coming Up with Cmd+Tab
Hello, I am having a strange problem. It started with Messages. If I have messages open, and I command tab away from it, I cannot command tab back to it. I have to go to the application switcher menu and select it. Now it is doing the same thing with Safari, which is really annoying. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? exporting Contacts
Hi, When you export your contacts on the Mac, by default, it creates 1 vcf file with all of your contacts. If you want to create 1 vcf file for each contact, you must hold down the option key while dragging and dropping. It's already been determined that the VoiceOver drag and drop does not work. It just says item no longer visible. But I can do this by holding down the mouse by control-option-command-shift-space bar. The problem is the option key is already pressed and it still creates 1 vcd file. Anyone know how to do this with VoiceOver? Thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com.
