Hi,

I think you would find it difficult to get good results with any OCR app since
the camera resolution is so poor on an iPod touch.

Hi,
Yes, having a similar experience. Not jumping to end of messages
though. In fact I can't figure out the command to get it to do this at
all if someone could let me know as command + down arrow no longer

I've had to rescue several accidentally deleted items from the trash

Thanks all,

Re: File sharing and permissions problems

2012-08-20 Thread Jeff Berwick
I don't know if this is the right way to do things, or if it will work in your
situation, but I recently had to take control of another user's files on my
wife's computer. At any rate, if you open up the folder in Finder, you can
navigate to the file. Do a [vo][shift][m] on the file and choose Get Info.
In that dialogue box you have the ability to set permissions. The interesting
part of this dialogue box is the action button. When you press it, you can
have the permission changes you have made apply to all subsequent files and
folders.

I am wondering if this may be helpful as you may have set the sharing
permissions on the parent folder and those permissions have not cascaded down
to the child folders.

May be worth a try.

Hth,
Jeff

start doing vo+down arrow, I'm finding though I see the results, if I keep
vo+down arrowing, I find the list of results is collapsing and not allowing
me to continue going down the list. I don't know if it has to do with that
stupid preview paine getting in my way, or what, but I'm finding this to be
 extremely irritating.

Is there not a way to get around this? What am I missing.

Here's an example: I have a contact named Ben Bloomgren in my addressbook.
If I hit command+space, then type bloomgren wait a second or so to let it
populate, then I vo+down arrow I hear his contact entry in my contacts, but
then I also have things like an IMessage I started with him, but then
apparently there are other things down there too. I can't get to them
though. As soon as I hit the result with our IMessage, the menu collapses
and then all I see is search wikipedia for Bloomgren, and if I try vo+up
arrowing, I get nowhere but back to the actual search text box, and if I
vo+down arrow it just sits there like an idiot and dings at me.

I'm obviously doing something wrong. Do tell. What changed from Lion to
 Mountain Lion? This is ridiculous.

Re: Bookshare, Unarchiver, after ML

2012-08-20 Thread Christine Grassman
There are a number of ways I have done this:
1. Typically, the titles are partial titles with the extensions, and the
slightest differentiation in spelling will not find them for you, so you could
use spotlight, finder, etc., to search for files with the extension .xml --
typically, the most recent one will show first.
2. Go into whatever folder you have the book in, and look for it. If the .xml
file isn't there, open the folder with the book's title, and arrow down until
you find the .xml file. Hitting enter should open Safari and place you at the
top with the Bookshare notice.
3. Of course, if you know the truncated title, write that with the .xml
extension in spotlight, and it should come up.
I am sure there are more tech-savvy ways to do this, but these are what work
for me.
I've noticed that over the past year or so, newly uploaded books which I
download from Bookshare have an XML file available, and I don't have to run
unarchiver or put in my password. With some older books, I still have to. I
never know which will be the case until I've downloaded a book and attempted to
open it.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for this tip. I learned about this option on a call to Apple

Do you have a large user folder shared that is working for all sub folders
including downloads, music, movies and such?

In the shared area in the info tab I've changed owner to my user account.
should it be something else? I think I tried Admin and can try that again.

I really appreciate your feedback on this. I have the feeling this powerful
tool is not used by many who would find it helpful. It seems pretty straight
forward in Mountain Lion System Preferences. That is it seems straight forward
but I have only some of the desired files sharing.

trying to get everything working correctly.

I've made good progress in having my three mac computers share files.
However, I'm wondering if I can increase the access I currently have or if
there is a limitation for Voice Over users.

I want to be able to share my complete user account on all computers.
I set up sharing but for some reason some folders insist on saying no
 permission to share

So for example I set up in sharing that file sharing is turned on. I
select my HD and give read and write permission. I then can access it just
fine for many of the folders but certain ones like Downloads, Music, and
some others insist on saying No Permission to read. and I can't access
these folders. Yet others like desktop and all the folders I have created
 work fine.

So, Are others able to set up sharing to work fully with Voice Over?

Any tips on getting file sharing to completely work?

Even the partially working sharing is very helpful. I'd love to improve
 things a bit.

Currently two of the three computers are using Mountain Lion and I plan to
update the other computer soon. they are acting the same with either
operating system, Lion or Mountain Lion, though Mountain Lion seems to be
 easier to work with.

Thanks for sharing any successes or similar problems. Tips are greatly
 appreciated.

I would imagine you should be able to copy and paste the necessary files onto a
data card the same way as with a PC, but haven't done it with my Mac.

There are a number of ways I have done this:
 1. Typically, the titles are partial titles with the extensions, and the
slightest differentiation in spelling will not find them for you, so you
could use spotlight, finder, etc., to search for files with the extension
.xml -- typically, the most recent one will show first.
 2. Go into whatever folder you have the book in, and look for it. If the
.xml file isn't there, open the folder with the book's title, and arrow down
until you find the .xml file. Hitting enter should open Safari and place you
at the top with the Bookshare notice.
never know which will be the case until I've downloaded a book and attempted
 to open it.

Bean Dafault Font Settings

2012-08-20 Thread Emilio Hernandez
Hello everyone,

Forgive my slight frustration, but as I am attempting to migrate from Windows
gradually, I know there will be those instances where it will not be likely to
avoid from using JAWS. I am a fan of using Windows and JAWS because when going
blind, this is the first introduction I had to accessible technology.
One thing I observe as I begin tackling the word processing aspect of the
Macintosh is the edit navigation for changing font criteria is roughly the same.
I can see how to change font, margin, and general characteristics of a
document, but how can I make these the default within Bean for example?
Looked at archives for Pages, but I did not clearly understand how to keep my
changes permanent, which is what I want. Within Bean, I have selected generic
new document template. I click on document settings, and VO-right arrow to
change font, but it does not appear my changes are accepted when relaunching
the application.

Sorry this note has been so lengthy.

thank you all for the help. :)

Hi there
Have you tried saving out the blank template with the changes that you want?
You have to save it as a template and not as another type of document for that

I haven't used Bean but some apps, like TextEdit, have preference
settings for the default font. Also, I thought there used to be a trick
that if you had no documents open but the app was running, changes made
would become the default. I wasn't able to reproduce this with TextEdit
but maybe Bean does it this way.

Firefox and Webvisum Keyboard Shortcuts?

2012-08-20 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I've gotten WebVisum installed with Firefox. Now I'm trying to figure out the
keyboard defaults for capchas and WebVisum menus, etc. I'm not even sure
whether these keystrokes will work on the Mac.

My biggest problem, however, is that I can't go into the webvisum submenu from
the Firefox tools menu. My sighted husband can't go in by clicking, either.

Anyone fooling around with all of this? It used to work, then I took a break
while installing ML, and now it seems broken again.

Thanks,
Teresa

are they joking with us

2012-08-20 Thread William Windels
Hello,
I have done a clean-install of 10.8 on my new air since I had very strange
problems with my air and , I was using in installation of 10.8 with some peaces
of 10.7.x, 10.6.x and 10.5.x from my time-machine backup.
So, a clean install seems a good idea to determine if I had software-problems
or other problems.

I have discovered that I can't import all my preferences of voiceover even if I
use separated vopref-files by item or if I use a global vopref-file that was
created before or after the introduction of mountain Lion.

I can't understand this at all since that bug was also announced since 10.7 and
since there where also other comments on this lists about this treads, I am
shore others have reported this also.

Even, the speech bugs with the nuance voices aren't fixed where some things are
spoken strange if there is a dot in the word without spaces before or after the
dot.
This is also a bug since 10.7 and, one year and a major release later, no
changes in this.

Do they have other priorities are there not enough people, is the last time of
voiceover announced and perhaps something new is coming (with new problems of
course like outspoken before voiceover)?

I am angry that this kind of bugs still exists after one year and a major
release.

frustrated regards,
William

Re: Bookshare, Unarchiver, after ML

2012-08-20 Thread Mary Scott
I solved the problem. It turns out that I can not unzip books downloaded
previous to ML. The books I just downloaded opened just fine, opened, and
transferred to the Stream like a charm. I am so relieved.
On Aug 20, 2012, at 8:51 AM, Christine Grassman cgrassman1...@gmail.com wrote:

There are a number of ways I have done this:
 1. Typically, the titles are partial titles with the extensions, and the
slightest differentiation in spelling will not find them for you, so you
could use spotlight, finder, etc., to search for files with the extension
.xml -- typically, the most recent one will show first.
 2. Go into whatever folder you have the book in, and look for it. If the .xml
file isn't there, open the folder with the book's title, and arrow down until
you find the .xml file.
never know which will be the case until I've downloaded a book and attempted
 to open it.

Badges in YoruFukurou

2012-08-20 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
When I launch YoruFukurou, each time I get new tweets in my timeline,
mentions, or for that mind, DM's, it keeps updating with a badge, for lack
of better term alert in my dock. So, recently, when I looked down in my
dock, for example, it said, YoruFukurou 200 something odd items. This
isn't per, sey, an issue, but, I do wonder if I can turn it off where it
won't put the new item count with the icon in the dock. maybe I'm just
weird, but I'd rather it not tell me that.

I looked in the preferences under notifications, and also under account
notifications, but I don't see any way to shut that off, unless it's
berried, and I'm missing something. Obviously, there is nothing in the
notification center preferences either under system prefs.

I'm on version 2.76 of YoruFukurou, using mountain Lion, if that helps.

Chris.

Re: Podcast App for Mac

Hey Mark,

I can confirm that indeed Downcast is working on a app for the mac, as
they responded directly to me a few weeks ago on Twitter you can check

 Hi Mark,

I use a couple of AppleScripts to speed up playback of tracks selected
in iTunes and return to normal speed. iTunes itself doesn't support
variable speed playback, but QuickTime Player, which it uses, does. So
the scripts just pass the current position in the track to QuickTime
Player, with the speed boost, and then back to iTunes at normal speed,
so the track position can be kept.  I've used this method for several
years. However, it's the older version of QuickTime, which is now
dubbed QuickTime 7, that has the easy access to A/V controls of
pitch, speed, etc. that was used for the scripts, and while this still
works (and provides different playback options -- all accessible
through the GUI with VoiceOver), it's no longer included by default
with operating system distributions starting with Lion; you have to
 download it separately.

If you're interested, I posted instructions on the Mac-access list
earlier this year, and you can read the post in the mail archives:
 Speeding up podcasts on the

I myself, in mountain Lion never've done it, but apparently starting in
mountain Lion, you can just hit shift with the arrow keys like normal.

Before that though, I think you had to interact first with the item that you
wanted to select, then use your standard selection commands. I don't think
the interacting is necessary any longer though as of ML, but again, I've not
as of yet since upgrading had a need surprisingly enough to need to try.

Hi,

I think he's talking about the inability to import preferences that were
made with previous versions of OS X. For example, you can't import a
preference file you made in Lion into Mountain Lion.

2012-08-20 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland

Here's the thing:

If you try importing VO settings from a different version of OSX into
another version of OSX, it's not going to work. This is because you're
taking a set configuration from a different version of Voiceover as well
when you do this.

So, if you in theory, had pieces of OSX 10 6, 10 7, and, 10 8, God help you
by the way? LOL! If you try importing settings say from 10 6 into, say, 10
8, it's definitely not gonna work. Same vice versa. If you try importing
from 10 8, back into say... 10 7, it won't give very desirable, if any,
results.

To simplify things, you can't import VoiceOver Preferences from an earlier
version of Mac OS X with ease. What I did was to copy the VO preference
folders from my user preferences library and copy them in to my library in
Mountain Lion. This maintained settings from all the way back to Leopard in

Garage Band

2012-08-20 Thread Scott Rumery
Does anyone know how to use Garage Band on Mountain Lion to record a podcast?
I have been looking through the manual and it says to choose Podcast when
creating a project but I can't seem to find where I would do this. Any help
will be greatly appreciated.

Text Detective

HiRachel
I have a question about text detective? It says to use unlock mode when doing
the scan. What if you forget? I just did that and it sounded like it went in to
unlock mode automatically. However, when I checked it, it was still locked. So,
I unlocked it and start over. Do you have to do that?

When you first open it find the crate new project button.
Once you press that you will find the different templates, Podcast is
one of these templates.
Let me know if there is anything else you need. Take care!

Badges in the dock.

2012-08-20 Thread Jakob Rosin
Hi list!
I hope everyone is well!
I was just reading list and saw some people talking about dock badges. (like
how many unread mails you do have, unread tweets in youru fucurou etc). How
ever, I can't see them with voice over. It just reads the name of the app and
thats it. Is something broken or is there a setting somewhere to disable or
enable it?

I'm using mountain lion on the 2012 mac book air if that matters.

keyboard randomly switching function key settings in ML

2012-08-20 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I'm using a SpaceSaver M external USB keyboard on an MBP13 circa 2008 running
Mountain Lion. Occasionally, for no reason I can spot, the keyboard will
switch from using the function keys as hardware keys, the way it's supposed to,
to using the function keys as software keys, what I don't want. Thus, for a
while, F-11 and F-12 will decrease and increase volume respectively; then,
suddenly, they will open Spaces or Dashboard.

The solution to this problem is to put the computer to sleep, and then wake it
up again. But Im wondering if there's a way to stop it altogether?
Thanks. :)

Re: Text Detective

2012-08-20 Thread Rachel Feinberg
Hi Eugenia,

The tips do say to unlock the orientation, however, since the app goes into
landscape mode, automatically, I think not unlocking it shouldn't set you back
at all. If, for some reason, it does, then you can try to unlock the
orientation and try again. If your scanning experiences are the same, then you
can choose what method to use.
Good luck, and enjoy scanning!

Re: keyboard commands for iOS devices using bluetooth?

2012-08-20 Thread Rachel Feinberg
Try vo space to double tap. Or, with quick navigation on, toggled by the left
and right arrow being pressed together, you can press up/down arrow together.
The vo keys are the control and option keys, which are the 2nd and 3rd keys on
the bottom left row. The keys in order from left to right are as follows, using
an apple wireless keyboard:
function, control, option, command, space, another command key, and the option
key. Then the normal arrows.

Re: Garage Band

2012-08-20 Thread Scott Rumery
Hi Mike,

Thanks for the help. Let me explain to you what it is that I am trying to do.

I am using Audio Highjack Pro to record both my voice and my system sound. The
problem with this is that the program is making 2 separate files and I wanted
to use Garage Band to join these files, but when I try and open these files
with GB the Open File button is dimmed. Do you know what I am doing wrong, and
if you have a better idea how to record my voice along with my system sounds, I
would be open to hearing about it.

Fwd: tables not recognized by VO in Textedit

 Hello,
Today I tried to insert a table into a Textedit document I created. Two odd
 things happened:
 1. After I entered the number of rows, I was able to enter the number of
columns. After entering columns, though, everything in the table dialog was
dimmed. Closing the dialog seemed to be my only recourse, meaning I could not
change my mind about the row or column counts.
 2. More importantly, vo seemed unable to see the table. It read a great many
new line characters, but no table at all. This was very disappointing as I
had hoped to be able to fill in the data for the table once inserted and, in
so doing, format the information in a visually pleasing manner (something
made nearly impossible without tables for sets of data).

Please pass this along so that vo is able to read and edit tables in
Textedit. I imagine vo-arrowing to each cell and then typing into that cell
whatever text belongs there, once interacting with the table as a whole. I am
on a Mini running 20.8. Thank you for your time.

Using the number, could you? I am not trying to be difficult, but I make it a
point to not report anything I have not personally experienced. I have only
ever used Textedit and do not have Pages or other exitors, so I cannot comment
on any lack of table support therein. As I said, I'm not trying to be difficult
here, it's just that I only report what I experience.

cool discovery in mail

2012-08-20 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I wanted to let you know of a cool command I just discovered in mail, though
most of you probably know it already. As you arrow through messages, you can
hold shift and the message spoken is selected. When you first press shift and
an arrow key, the message you were on as well as the one you land on are both
selected. This is great since I can just select a bunch of messages and delete
them, instead of deleting one by one and having that imap refresh annoyance
restart the speaking of messages every time. Anyway, I just thought I'd share
in case someone didn't know.

Okay.

Subject line about says it all. Any progress on Winamp for Mac yet? IF not,
are there any players that can do ENQ like cueing one track after another and
overlap playback or cross fade? I tried DJ but that doesn't seem to work for

why I'd rather not use it.

If you get gibberish text, the page may be upside down. or, you may be too far,
or too close to the text. the tips say to hold it about a forearm's length

practicing to get useable results. :)

Re: Garage Band

2012-08-20 Thread Blinkin
Scott,
After you are done recording you can actually just copy and paste the
file itself into a Garage Band Project.
You can open a new project and once it is there just go to where your
file is saved in the Finder and copy it. Then go back to Garage Band, press
Enter to move to the beginning of your track and paste.
One easy way to record yourself and your voice over in a single track
is to just open quicktime and start a new audio file, then turn the audio
playback on.
There is a delay but this will loop your voice through your system so
all you would need to do is one recording on system audio and since your voice
is now coming through your system it will be recorded.
The delay is a little weird but at least you don't have to line tracks
up and you just have it in one track.
I don't do this recording skype calls though. I am still working out
the kinks here but it is better to have two tracks with two people so you can
edit them individually as necessary.
I have been trying to find a ood way to do this but haven't got it to
work yet.
I have started to record a Skype session and my input with the plan to
merge them in Garage Band but the Skype session always eliminates the silence
which makes aligning them impossible
I made sure that the silence monitoring was off but I still have the
same problem.
I will let you know when I come up with a solution to this.
I hope this has been helpful. If you have more questions or anything
let me know.
We can give Skype a go if you would like. I am free most evenings. Take
care!!

 Hi Mike,

Thanks for the help. Let me explain to you what it is that I am trying to do.

I am using Audio Highjack Pro to record both my voice and my system sound.
The problem with this is that the program is making 2 separate files and I
wanted to use Garage Band to join these files, but when I try and open these
files with GB the Open File button is dimmed. Do you know what I am doing
wrong, and if you have a better idea how to record my voice along with my
system sounds, I would be open to hearing about it.

Re: cool discovery in mail

2012-08-20 Thread Esther
Hi Alex,

Just to let you know, holding down the shift key and arrowing through is
general way to select (highlight) multiple contiguous items. It works in other
tables, too. You can select multiple files for deletion this way in Finder, or
select multiple tracks in iTunes to use to either create a new playlist from
selection or delete from your library. (What's more fun is doing non-contiguous
selection!)

Cheers,

Esther

Re: cool discovery in mail

2012-08-20 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
Hold up though. You forgot something *really!* important about this method.

This only works if cursor tracking is disabled.

1. With cursor tracking enabled, select the first msg you want to begin
selecting noncontiguously from. By the way, also, be sure you're interacting
with the table first before you try this.

2. Turn off cursor tracking with vo+shift+F3.

3. Press vo+down arrow until you get to the next item you wish to select.

4. Now, press vo+command+space bar to select the item.

5. Keep vo down arrowing until you see the next item to be selected, then
repeat step 4.

The reason this is so important to understand first before trying this method
is because if your cursor tracking is enabled, then as soon as you vo+down
arrow, you're gonna deselect the previous item and just move down the list as
if you were navigating the table normally not even caring about selecting
things to start with.

If cursor tracking is off, then your voiceover cursor can freely move without
having to worry about your mouse pointer or your keyboard focus tracking along.

Chris.

I don't think Melsoft even did anything past 1.0. It was so darn limited from

wouldn't a been worth it.

Why not give VLC a go. I really like it for what it is.

Re: cool discovery in mail

2012-08-20 Thread John Panarese
Actually, the method, as of Lion, works with or without cursing tracking on
for non contiguous selecting. You must be interacting, but cursor tracking
can be on.

If cursor tracking is off, then your voiceover cursor can freely move without
having to worry about your mouse pointer or your keyboard focus tracking
 along.

Re: keyboard commands for iOS devices using bluetooth?

2012-08-20 Thread Damashe Thomas

Hi,
Here are a couple of sites you may want to take a look at
http://www.hllf.net/
Contains a detailed list of iOS bluetooth keyboard commands
http://axslab.com/articles/ios-voiceover-gestures-and-keyboard-commands.php
Contains commands for bluetooth keyboard commands, gestures and commands for
use with most braille displays.
I hope these help, they helped me a lot last year, I found out I could do a
lot more with my keyboard than I thought. Any thanks is owed to Ester, who
posted these links last year on the viPhone list.

Hi both John and Chris
Well John, you say it works without turning cursor tracking off, but when I
used the method Chris suggested, I got to work. I have not a clue why it
doesn't work the way you said. Could it have anything to do with the fact that
I have my mouse following the voiceover cursor?

 Hi all,
I wanted to let you know of a cool command I just discovered in mail,
though most of you probably know it already. As you arrow through
messages, you can hold shift and the message spoken is selected. When you
first press shift and an arrow key, the message you were on as well as the
one you land on are both selected. This is great since I can just select a
bunch of messages and delete them, instead of deleting one by one and
having that imap refresh annoyance restart the speaking of messages every
time. Anyway, I just thought I'd share in case someone didn't know.

Applications Not Coming Up with Cmd+Tab

2012-08-20 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hello,

I am having a strange problem.

It started with Messages. If I have messages open, and I command tab away from
it, I cannot command tab back to it. I have to go to the application switcher
menu and select it.

Now it is doing the same thing with Safari, which is really annoying.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

Thanks,
Brandon

exporting Contacts

2012-08-20 Thread Shen
Hi,
When you export your contacts on the Mac, by default, it creates 1 vcf file
with all of your contacts. If you want to create 1 vcf file for each contact,
you must hold down the option key while dragging and dropping.
It's already been determined that the VoiceOver drag and drop does not work. It
just says item no longer visible.
But I can do this by holding down the mouse by
control-option-command-shift-space bar. The problem is the option key is
already pressed and it still creates 1 vcd file.
Anyone know how to do this with VoiceOver?
Thanks.
