Re: External drive
If the drive isn't going to be used to transport stuff from your Mac to a Windows box then you can use one of the native Mac disk formats, which is usually Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Assuming you'll run time machine and store the backups on this drive, I don't know if that works well with a FAT or ExFAT partition. article: What’s New in iOS 7 Accessibility for Individuals who are Blind, Deaf-blind, or who have Low Vision
http://applevis.com/blog/apple/what%E2%80%99s-new-ios-7-accessibility-individuals-who-are-blind-deaf-blind-or-who-have-low Introduction: Just like the last several Autumn seasons, this one comes with another new iOS release. And just like other releases, this release brings a lot of new features and functions to supported iDevices. Major changes include enhancements to Siri, a new Control Center available from anywhere within the OS giving you instant access to several essential controls, a revamped Notifications Center, and much more. Many blogs and Apple themselves will be highlighting these new enhancements to iOS, so I will not discuss them in great detail. This article, as the title implies, deals with enhancements pertaining to accessibility: specifically, those changes which impact individuals who are blind or deaf-blind. One of the joys and curses of getting a new release from Apple is that they do not actively document the changes in accessibility with their products. This is good for me, because it gives me the chance to share new features with my readers, but it is also a challenge. While I have taken care to work extensively with the new version of iOS since the first Beta release in June, there will be things that I have missed. I'm confident this will also be the case with other people attempting to do the same thing. This is also part of the fun. Whenever I discover a new feature that was not previously written about, it's almost like solving a puzzle or getting an early Birthday present. With that said, here are the changes Detective Davert found while investigating accessibility with the new iOS. General changes: As anyone who has tried to enable VoiceOver on an iDevice can tell you, Triple Click Home, while designed to quickly enable selected accessibility features, by default will do nothing unless configured or unless it is during the initial set up of the device. With iOS 7, you can press and hold the home key and tell Siri to enable some accessibility options such as VoiceOver, inverted colors, assistive touch, and guided access. Simply say: “turn off VoiceOver”. Or “turn on assistive touch”. Sadly, this does not appear to work with other accessibility features such as Zoom, Hearing aid mode, etc. I would hope that Apple would consider making this an option for other accessibility features in the future, so that more users could quickly toggle on and off settings as needed. Note that to use Siri, you must have either a data connection to a cellular network or wifi. One can still use the Triple Click Home function, once it's configured, but this is just another way to quickly toggle some accessibility features on and off. You can also tell Siri to go in to the Accessibility Settings menu by saying “open accessibility settings”. One mainstream feature that some may be concerned about is the automatic updating of apps. By default, this is set to on. As anyone who runs apps can probably tell you, developers sometimes unintentionally break accessibility when updating various parts of their apps. As such, many users may wish to disable this feature. To do so, go in to Settings\iTunes App Store and under the SHOW ALL heading, you’ll find Updates. Double tap to toggle this setting on and off, or tap once if not using VoiceOver. VoiceOver changes: The list of gestures with VoiceOver continues to grow with each major release of iOS. This time around, one addition is the 4 finger double-tap. This enables VoiceOver help from anywhere. So instead of having to go in to Settings\General\accessibility\VoiceOver\VoiceOver practice, you can now do this gesture from anywhere and then do gestures and keyboard commands to find out their functions. This of course, is already accomplished through VO plus K on the keyboard and space with K with braille displays. Another new gesture that was added is the quadruple 3 finger tap. This will copy the last spoken text to the clipboard. This is a handy feature, which will save a lot of time since you will no longer need to go to the rotor to find Edit and then copy the selected text to the clipboard. This also eliminates some need for selecting text via gestures, as these seem to be confusing to many of the clients I work with that choose to utilize only the touch screen. A 3rd new gesture comes out of a new feature. To access the Control Center, which gives you quick access to many popular toggle settings within the iDevice, you must first tap the status bar, then swipe up with 3 fingers. You will now be in the Control Center. Double tapping any of the options (single tapping without VoiceOver) will toggle settings on and off. To exit the Control Center, do a 2 finger scrub on the home screen, or the equivalent keyboard command to activate the back button on your external device. Old gestures, new function: Previously, the slide to unlock button was located directly above the home button on iDevices. This is no longer the case. To

Re: it's the little things
Hi, Jean. I can at least answer your first question about how to extract yourself from an edit field. If you tap anywhere on the screen outside of the keyboard, your cursor should flip to that area, and voiceover should start reading from that point. At that point, a right or left gesture should help you navigate. As far as the at symbol, on the iPhone's virtual keyboard, it usually appears to the right of the , when it is included with characters. If in the symbols mode of the virtual keyboard, it is located on the right-hand middle, by the! An apostrophe. I agree, it's a pain to hunt out sometimes. On a standard keyboards, as I'm sure you know, it is a shift of the number two key. I do not know if or why this would change on a Bluetooth keyboard. Hope this helps. Be well. Re: Media File downloading instead of playing
I didn't notice a reply to this one. As far as I know, what the browser does with a media file depends on what kind of file it is and what the web server tells the browser it is. If it's identified correctly the browser can pick it up and play it. If it is misidentified or a format the browser doesn't understand then it might just download it instead. Re: Sharing VO Speech over a Skype or VOIP Call
I used to live right near a guitar center. Good thing I moved as it was making it hard to keep on budget. The mixer I used was a Machie 1202, which today is the 1202VLZ4 which runs about $270 most places. You can probably find the original for about $100 used. I just had a Shure SM58 on a table stand. iTunes Question
I have downloaded the newest iTunes, the one you have to have before upgrading to IOS7. It seems to be snappier, but now I am having an issue with podcasts. If I tell it to delete a podcast episode before it's downloaded, it won't let me delete it. I have had to unsubscribe from several podcasts because there are way too many episodes that are not downloaded that I have already listened to. Is this fixable? Ok, I was afraid of that, whoever made that made it sound amazing, and easy as ever, but go figure. As for the button you're supposed to press, all I see is the link for the voice itself, which I vo+space, space, press return on, and vo+shift+space on, and most of the time, that does nothing, so have no idea what to make of this. Every once in a blue moon, they'll play, and right beside the link I see an image that's pretty much inaccessible, which I press return on, and that seems to do next to nothing, so have no idea what's going on with their site. Re: Anyone else having difficulties with the iOS 7.0 install?
To be clear, to gesture to reach the control center is the upside down of the jester to reach notification Center. Thus, tapping in the status bar line at the top of the screen and then a three fingered flick up anywhere on the screen will get to the control center. This is also true of the notification center and a three finger swipe down. I still cannot find post to Facebook or twitter in notification Center, and don't see an easy way to do this, other than going through the App Store cells. Braille Simulator for Mac
Hi all, My wife needs to download a braille simulator for her braille course and work. I understand that there is Perky Duck, but although I found a link for Mac, it says that I can't run it because Classic view (whatever that is) is no longer supported. I'm guessing this is because I am running Mountain Lion and it expects an earlier Mac OS. So, does anybody know any simulated braille programs that work on Mac? Hi. This is normal. Apple wants to verify the actual device installs. So, if the server is not able to verify the activation, it will fail. You need to just be patient, and try again. Re: Anyone else having difficulties with the iOS 7.0 install?
Hi guys I had absolutely no problem with the install, except that it takes for ever. The only way you can tell if your iPhone is still with you is that the screen gets warm while it's doing it. This happens after it's shut itself down. But if I don't if I had to guess I would think it took 20 to 30 minutes after the iPhone shut itself down. I had to get my sided husband to look at the screen, and it told him that it was doing progress. The only thing is that I can't figure out how to get rid of the extra artist that I acquired when I did my update. It put back some of the ones that I had taken off the iPhone. I can't figure out how to do it anymore. I hope somebody is pretty please going to tell me that I don't have to connected to iTunes. I was not given the option to delete like it was before. Hi Everyone! I just got finished updating my I pad mini and now i am waiting for my I phone 4.s. to finish installing the I.O.S. 7 update. Hi there This is not a VoiceOver thing because my sighted husband had to bail out on installing the update on his iPhone 4.
