Hi, Anne, I see the Show Word count option, but it is not a button. Pressing it simply changes the menu item to Hide Word Count. I managed to see the word count a couple times while looking around in the document layout area, but I can’t reliably find the info. Hi! I have a problem. I was trying to import a mailbox which is saved in thunderbird i think. When opening the import settings there seems to be some radiobuttons that voiceover can not found. I can tab in the dialog box and i find one of the five radio buttons. Is there a simple or other way to help me out? I agree about the Braille. I have not used my Braille display very much with the Mac because of what William says in his message. I thought by now as the Mac Operating Systems matured and developed, we'd have better Braille support. May be Freedom Scientific best give them a hand since they may go bust if GW Micro and Microsoft become more compatible as all Jaws users may switch to Windoweyes as well as all the organisations to have Freedom Scientific in their pockets. Hi, If it’s a genre that you’ve entered yourself, once you eliminate all instances of that genre within your iTunes database, it will no longer appear. If it is one of the default ones that iTunes generates themselves, then I’ve never tried, but I don’t believe that there is a way to delete them. Later... Can I change the speed of a recording with Amadeus Pro?
Hi all, I have an old tape that I think was recorded at 1.78 inches per second. I have just obtained a real to real recorder that will only run at 3.3/4 or 7.5 inches per second. Can I slow the speed with Amadeus by half so I can hear the original recording? The original tape was recorded 45 years ago and is very important to my wife and I. Thanks again for any advice. Hello, Have you looked at textedit on your Mac? I see in the preferences an option to display html code. I should imagine it will be very much like gedit. It’s been some years since I looked at Gnome. I’ve used emacs within a console. It’s just about useable. I haven’t tried vi for working on code. I think most of these were installed via Mac Ports but nano is on by default. VoiceOver is not great in the console and as you are used to working in Gnome I guess you prefer a GUI. But the languages you suggested are typically very text orientated. Did you use orca to access GEdit ? I would checkout the macports project or brew if you like ruby. Hi, Anne and all, After closing Pages and relaunching, I am now able to see the word count plain as day. Before, I was looking at a Word document that I had brought into Pages, and I was seeing a lot of information that appeared very graphical in nature. Something about rectangles and placeholders. Not sure what was going on there, but after relaunching Pages, I can easily find the word count in a practice document I created plus the original Word file I was playing with. so in itunes 12.1, I noticed that doing VO j to jump lands you back to the column browser instead of in the LCD section like it did before. I too must confess that I am not a braille user on the Mac so cannot comment on how frustrating this is. however there do seem to be a lot of people using Braille happily on the MacVisionaries list so perhaps there is some expertise you can tap into there to get support. Apart from that I agree with all Barry has said. I also agree that there are areas that the experience on the Mac can improve but equally I could compile a much longer list of complaints / disappointments with Windows and the various Screenreaders and Windows OS problems. . . Only today I was experiencing the frustration of Jaw’s inability to accurately copy and paste text to and from ,html content. This is a long standing annoyance at what should be a basic function which has existed for me since Jaws 14 and shows no sign of being resolved in 16. I can work around it by using NVDA but this and other deficiencies definitely exist on Windows. I still prefer the Mac overwhelmingly for many functions, including web browsing. The Mac also provides for free a voice dictation and command interface which forme personally outperforms anything I have bought on the Windows platform, including Dragon Naturally Speaking. I agree that there is a problem with the implementation of advance Office support on the Mac. However this is to a large extent about the lack of depth in the compilation of strategies compared to the information, tutorials and guides available on the Windows side. Apple has relatively little interest in promoting Microsoft Office and will pay lip service only to supporting this format in many cases. This is understandable given the competing nature of their suites. Hopefully there is a lot to look forward to when the allegedly fully Voiceover accessible version of Microsoft Office is released later this year. I am in the fortunate position of having access to Mac and Windows. For some things only Windows will do. For example Safari seems to fall over with my bank web site. Equally there are things I will always if given a preference will do on the Mac side. In general for me as long as it works, I prefer doing things on the Mac now. However I want to advance my capability on all platforms. I try to learn as much as I can about not just Windows and Mac OS, but also iOS and Android. Unfortunately I have never been able to get a Linux/vinux environment working properly otherwise I would be delving into that as well. Some might see this as a geeky approach but my view in the struggle to overcome visual impairment we should, if we can afford it, utilise every useful option open to us. In the spectrum of options available I think both MacOs and iOS have defensible and honourable records. hi all. i am trying to play simple midi files on my mac air, running the latest yosemite and, i have absolutely no idea how to do it? when i activate the button on the website to start the midi, it opens up garageBand. i don’t know where to go or what to do from there. i do not see the name of the file, any play or start or some such. is it necessary for me to learn garageBand to play these files or, is there another way to play them? and, if i do need to use garageBand, is there any super simple, really really easy beginner tutorial or podcast somewhere? thanks much. Some External Hard Drive Questions
Hey all. Today I bought an external hard drive because of that freak accident with my Mac a few weeks ago. So I got a few questions about it. 1. I want to do a time machine backup of my entire HD. However, I have a whole bunch of youtube videos I copied onto another system other than my Mac. Can I copy over those videos onto the external drive without partitioning it? 2. Well, as I don’t use braille, I will not comment to much on that except just to say that I think it’s a little odd to seemingly not egknolege the significance of an off the shelf system with braille support out of the box and not find away to make good use of it. With that said, there are some problems with some of your assertions that I feel need to be addrest since nobody else has done so yet. I Also should point out that it is unclear to me at times whether or not your points are in reference to braille or speech. So, there may be some occasional misunderstanding on my part. 1. Third party icons on the status bar are accessible with Voiceover. Specifically the Dropbox app. Any problems that may occur will be more to due with the third party developer rather than Apple. I don’t understand why you said they can’t be accessed with Voiceover. 2. The idea that there should be some kind of constant indicator that quicknav is turned on is your opinion. It is not an accessibility issue. This could be classified as a feature request however. 3. What do you mean by network stations? I have no idea what button in finder that you are referring to that connects to all available network shares at once. I know of no such button nor have I found any reference to this function in the help documentation. Finding and connecting to network shares in finder is quite easy to do with voiceover and if you want OS X to automatically connect to shares on your network, you can easily set this up in user preferences. So, I see no accessibility issue here. It’s possible however that I’m not understanding what you are referring to, but in any event I fail to see how this one thing could impact the usability of OS X for blind people to the extent that one would email Tim Cook. 4. Your subject is quality of osx with voiceover for people with dissablities. However, I don’t see how iWork compatibility with MS office has anything to do spasifically with blind people being able to use OS X. 5. With regard to manipulating the mouse with vo, there are some valid concerns that need to be addressed, but emailing Tim Cook is not the correct way to do that. I think it should also be said that flooding Apple with invalid complaints will increase the risk that the valid ones will go unnoticed or be ignored. in fact you can. I just listened to Jonathan Mosen’s excellent AmadeusPro tutorial where he demonstrates just such a technique. He had some very old cassette tapes that were recorded at half speed, and he showed how he ws able to bring them into AP, clean them up by removing tape hiss and then save them to a file. I highly recommend getting his tutorial. For the price you’ll learn much about AP including this technique. I have had to start using Nisus Writer Pro to read PDFs as I no longer find Preview usable. Interestingly I can no longer find the scroll area you describe. I have experimented with single page and continuous scroll view but might appear to work. I find is something called PDF content group, if I interact with that all I find is something call static text. If I interact with that I simply get an error sound if I try and reading or navigation commands. Shall we start a report-an-accessibility-bug-Friday tradition? Now, for my feelings on the matter: I would argue that iOS is increasingly not seeing the accessibility love that it requires, either. People are using it now purely for lack of choice. For OS X, while there may be indeed be choice, it appears to be between technical superiority and accessibility, and neither is appropriate to have on its own. I’m still in the Mac for now, but I think mostly because I appreciate the platform better—when even basic functionality stops working, or I lack the time to work around VoiceOver bugs, I will simply have to quit and make do with an inferior platform solely for its efficiency. I really, really don’t want to have to do this. FWIW, I still believe OS X as an ecosystem is the best there is for the lowest cost—sorry Windows apologists, but NVDA is no match for a commercial screen reader yet, IMO. For my favourite bugs: no indentation indicator, broken navigation of text by line on the web, losing position in HTML and/or text areas. Phil I have tried everything and get nowhere. In OS 10.9.5’s Mail; I get an email with a PDF attachment. I click on the attachment and the PDF is loaded into Preview. You should be able to play a midi file using iTunes. It’ll just use the built in instruments on OS X so it’s not going to sound great. I’m having trouble reading message headers. somebody sends me an email and also sends it to another person so we can connect. I can read the sender’s name, my name and the other person’s name but not their email address. is there a way to do this? Thanks. typically I find that i have to interact twice in the scroll area to get at the text. Once there I can use the VO reading commands like VO + arrow keys, or VO + function + command down / up for sentence and VO + function + shift + up/down arrow for paragraph. This pertains to files I open from the finder, and not from within the mail program, but I don’t think that should matter much.
