Navigate to the table and turn tracking off. Use the VoiceOver cursor to read
the list. You won't get any alerts. If you VO Space on anything, that'll select
it.

The accessibility API has an option for custom menus where voiceOver would
announce "has alternate items." I know I've seen this before but I cannot

Re: Pro Tools with VO? is it any good?

2018-02-26 Thread Slau Halatyn
The basic version of Pro Tools is $99 per year as a subscription after an
initial cost of $199 for the first year which includes support. While the
subscription is active, all updates are free. It's actually not expensive in in
general. For those who put the time in to learn it, it's the most accessible
audio platform but it's perhaps overkill for some folks.

Re: Pro Tools with VO? is it any good?

2018-02-23 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi Michael,

Pro Tools is quite accessible and has been improving over the years. Flo Tools
is a set of macros that make using Pro Tools far more efficient. FloTools.org
<http://flotools.org/> has a bunch of information along with tutorials, etc.
One thing to consider is that there is currently nothing out there in the way
of Pro Tools-specific tutorials from a blindness perspective. There was
something called ProToolsWithSpeech.com <http://protoolswithspeech.com/> but
that's quite out-of-date at this point. That said, it can be learned pretty
much by reading the pdf manuals, although it's daunting given the sheer amount
of info. It's absolutely not for the faint of heart but, it's worth it if
you're serious about audio. Essentially, you'll get out of it what you put into
it. There's an email list and a WhatsApp group. Feel free to contact me
off-list if you'd like more info.

Cheers,
Slau

Keyboard Maestro version 8 slated for accessibility fix

2017-10-03 Thread Slau Halatyn
For those of you who might be using Keyboard Maestro, version 8 has a bit of an
issue where the trigger is no longer visible in the Macros scroll area.
Triggers are still visible in the edit detail of each macro. The developer is
aware of the issue and it's been fixed for the next release. There was an
update yesterday so the next update won't be for a little while but at least we
know it's been addressed. Just an FYI.

Re: FileMaker, or other database?

2016-07-26 Thread Slau Halatyn
FileMaker is accessible for the most part. I haven’t tried creating new
templates but I’m using a database I created back around 1992 with FileMaker 4
and it’s working just fine. Dialogs and such are fully accessible. I found it
just a tad confusing when trying to create a brand new database within
FileMaker 12 but I’m sure with a little sighted assistance, I could get around
that initial hurdle. I simply haven’t had the need since I have that template I
created back in the day.

El Capitan and multiple voices

2016-07-20 Thread Slau Halatyn
I used to be a big fan of using multiple voices for various categories within
the Speech pane of VoiceOver preferences. At a certain point, things got kind
of screwy and I stopped using that option and just kept everything set to Alex.
I recently, perhaps hastily, upgraded to El Capitan right before going on
vacation, which was probably not a brilliant move. Anyway, I figured I’d
revisit the multiple voice thing. I noticed a day or two later that VoiceOver
would stop, or at least, I heard no voice. It happened a few times and all I
could do was force shut down the computer. I finally realized that the voice
would cut out right when either an attribute changed or a link was encountered
which meant that a different voice was a bout to be triggered. I was using at
least one third-party voice from Cepstral among the voices. I have a feeling it
could be a potential conflict. I’ve switched off additional voice options for
the time-being and, so far, so good. Just thought I’d mention it for the sake
of others.

Re: here's an application that'll move the mouse in fixed increments

2014-10-16 Thread Slau Halatyn
Sure. This is just one example and there are others. In Pro Tools, there's a
plug-in window in which parameters can be edited to affect selected audio. In
the case of the Normalize plug-in, the gain parameter (which appears to be
labelled and one would assume is accessible) is not accessible even though
other parameters like it are editable when you interact with the parameter. In
actuality, the edit field is nine-tenths of an inch to the right. Routing the
mouse pointer to the focused control requires you to move the mouse exactly
9/10 of an inch. You can't do that with Mouse Keys reliably. You could possibly
examine the mouse pointer coordinates, use the track pad, constantly query the
coordinates until you've moved the required distance to the right, making sure
you haven't moved down in the mean time. With Move Mouse, it's possible to move
left with a few strokes of the keyboard shortcut in a matter of a second or two
and you're done.

asking for confirmation of web site fail

this behavior on their machine? bTW, When first landing on

Much appreciated,

Re: itunes 11 is out

2012-12-01 Thread Slau
Here's what you need to do to get the behavior you used to see in the previous
version of iTunes:
1. Select the Songs radio button.
2. Make sure the Column Browser is visible, then under the Column Browser
submenu uncheck the Genres option and check the Artist and Album options.

Now you can just use first letter navigation and arrow keys to select artist
and album and the music table will be in a list view rather than grid. The one
behavior I can't replicate is the ability to simply press space bar on a
different album to play that new album. iTunes 11 will continue to play the
previously selected album until you bring up a contextual menu and hit the Play
option. I think it might work by pressing the Play button as well but I'm not
sure.

As far as libraries, yes, it still uses them, although I’m not quite sure

Re: What's the difference between Artist and Album Artist?

2012-12-01 Thread Slau
I know you resolved this issue but, for the sake of others who might not have
figured it out, here's an example where artist and album artist can help:
On the most recent Tony Bennett album, Duets 2, each song's artist label
includes Tony Bennett and his guest's name. So, in itunes, you get twenty
different artists pertaining to that one album. In order to play the album, you
couldn't just arrow down to tony Bennett and select the album. You'd have to
view things differently or search or whatever.

In a case like this, selecting all of the songs in the table and getting info
will bring up a dialog to simultaneously edit the ID3 tags. By putting in Tony
Bennett as album artist, the album now shows up under a single artist's name.
Each individual song still has tony and the guest listed as artist but the
album shows up under the general artist folder for Tony Bennett.

Hope that helps someone,

Slau

trying to identify a bug with VoiceOver in Mountain Lion

2012-11-12 Thread Slau Halatyn
There seems to be a bug with VoiceOver under Mountain Lion that didn't exist
under Lion or Snow Leopard. Within Pro Tools, there are a bunch of counter
displays and buttons that don't read correctly. This is expecially puzzling
since the programmer followed Apple's guidelines to make the application
accessible. Emails have been sent to Apple regarding the problem but it was
also suggested that, if we find another instance of text fields or multi-state
buttons not reading correctly under Mountain Lion but correctly under Snow
Leopard or Lion, it might lend a bit of urgency as this situation is, well,
urgent. Anybody aware of any such scenarios with other programs?

Cheers,

Slau

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way in Pro Tools. One can move to the name

there's something about the way the mouse sometimes follows the cursor and

Re: unlabeled checkbox in Carbon Copy Cloner

Even though VoiceOver sees this as being a checkbox, it doesn't appear as a
checkbox to sighted users. It's an icon that is sort of a help icon. When one

It does seem kind of redundant since CCC already indicates that the volume will
be bootable in the text area that follows the supposed checkbox.

Today, I received the Apogee Symphony Mobile card which is an Express 34 card

no attention because I figured, as usual, it'll be a pain to navigate to it and
it's not necessarily essential.

well, at some point, I meant to check my Airport status and pressed VO-m twice

Well, not in real time like a chat thing or such. It is capable of multiple

typing into one pane while the other pane translates on the fly.

I didn't see this thread earlier but I thought I'd respond. Yeah, it's
maddening how VoiceOver keeps reading from the top. One method that will work
for setting a placeholder is to use a hot spot. If, for example, you
Command-Tab over to Pro Tools or something, pressing the VO-hot spot number
will take you directly back to the spot you left in Preview. It's not the best

Re: how do i use the hot spots feature in voice over?

2010-11-30 Thread Slau
Trahern,

1. Navigate to any field, object or control you wish to set as a hot spot.
2. Use VO-Shift-with 1 through 0 on the numbers row to set a hot spot.

Once you've set a hot spot, you can use VO plus the number to instantly move
the focus to and speak the status of the hot spot. If you want VoiceOver to
read the hot spot without navigating to it, use VO-Command and the number. If
you want VoiceOver to automatically speak the contents of the hot spot whenever
it changes, use VO-Command-Shift and the number.

Re: how do i use the hot spots feature in voice over?

2010-11-30 Thread Slau
Hi Ezzy,

I'm not sure if I understand your question, exactly. Think of it as having 10
points available to you, anywhere on your Mac, in any application. You can use
any number hot spot in any application but you can't use number 1 twice, that
is, in one application and also another application at the same time.

If you wish to change a hot spot, you needn't necessarily delete the old hot
spot. You can simply set a new one with the same number and now that'll be the
new hot spot for that particular number. If, however, you simply wish to get
rid of a hot spot, pressing VO and the hot spot number a second time will
unassign that hot spot.

Hi Ester,

Just one thing, hot spots are actually persistent through reboots, FYI. Cheers!

I'll add a little more information to Slau's excellent response to explain
hot spots. Hot spots are meant to be used for temporary purposes. They don't
persist if you log out of your account, or quit an app, or restart your
machine. A good example of setting a hot spot would be if you're reading a
book or document in Preview, but need to switch to another application for a
while, but want to return to the same reading location. Although Preview
lets you set bookmarks, and you can also return to the app by switching
through your currently active apps with Command-Tab, this only gets you back
to the same page that you were reading. If you want to return to the same
point on the page, you would set a hot spot before you left the page, and
then use the command to return to that hot spot when you got back to the app.

Hot spots can also only take you to places that VoiceOver can navigate to.
It's possible to use other accessibility features of the Mac, such as Mouse
Keys, to move your mouse cursor position independently of VoiceOver. I've
used this to play sound samples on the Audible web site, by figuring out how
many pixels to move from a control that VoiceOver does recognize to get to
the player controls and click. (This keeps changing, incidentally, as they
re-design their web pages). You can't save this position as a hotspot,
because VoiceOver doesn't know how to get there independently. The hot spot
is basically a temporary snapshot of your use configuration in an app.

As far as easily getting to different web sites, such as the ones for Twitter
or Facebook with a single keystroke, Safari will already let you do that. If
you bookmark a web page with Command+D, and use VO+Space to press the pop up
menu for the location to be saved, then select Bookmarks Bar, you'll be
able to access the first 9 bookmark entries by pressing Command+the number of
the bookmark. So in Safari, Command+1 takes you to the location of the first
bookmark on your Bookmarks Bar, Command+2 takes you to the location of the
second bookmark on the the Bookmarks Bar, etc. The only thing to watch out
for is that when you add bookmarks to the Bookmarks Bar, your newest bookmark
becomes the first bookmark, and all the others get bumped up by one.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

accessibility of Adobe Audition

2010-11-24 Thread Slau Halatyn
As some of you might already know, Adobe recently released its public beta for
Audition for Mac, a relatively popular digital audio workstation originally for
Windows. It's most often used for basic multitrack recording, editing and audio
restoration. Most people working in the post-production world who are on
Windows use this program and, by all accounts, it's quite a mature program.

Well, it's no surprise, having come from Adobe, that the program is not at all
accessible. Now, with Pro Tools being quite accessible, I have no interest in
Audition but, of course, it's nice to have options and, frankly, all programs
should be accessible. Anyway, my personal attention has always been and will
continue to be focused on Pro Tools. If there's anyone on the list who would
like to contact Adobe regarding the accessibility of Audition, I think it would
be a good idea, if only to remind them of accessibility as a serious
consideration. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to mention how Pro Tools and Logic
have come along. Perhaps it won't amount to anything in the end, I don't know,
but perhaps it might lead to an alternative. Again, having options is good.

How much can you do with protools? Can you do automation, audio, midi,

for audio production, and they're using PT8. I've been trying to get them to
use 8.1, but my teacher doesn't seem to want to go through the process of
updating. I feel that is unfair to me, because it feels like all I'm there
for is to give people musical substance for their projects if that makes any
sense... I play all the music, while they're doing everything in Protools.
It's really aggravating and I'm considering dropping the course... I don't
want to take it out on my teacher, he's tried working with me to make sure I
get some of the substance, but it's just really pissing me off that all I
can do is pretty much sit their when the music's done, and wait for them to
edit. Then if they do something wrong, then I want to fix it but can't...
 lol.
OK, I'm done ranting, any insights you all can give would be great!!!

Re: Stickies?

2010-11-24 Thread Slau Halatyn
Stickies visually emulates what so many people sometimes do with sticky notes:
they literally stick them right on the screen. If the program is running, the
notes will be visible on screen. They do have an option for transparency so
people can leave them up and not be too distracted. I don't know of any
reminder functionality. I suppose it might be useful but I think it's really
meant to emulate a real sticky note stuck to the screen. You can create
multiple notes and save them. When you launch the program, all of the notes
appear. You can cycle through them with Command-` (accent). I use Stickies all
the time just to jot down quick bits of information for later transfer to
whatever area is appropriate. For example, while it's possible to enter a
contact into Address Book, it's often way too inefficient, especially if one
needs to use some customized fields and change work/home settings, etc. Now, I
haven't tried this but, if Stickies could detect data like address or date to
be able to bring up a contextual menu to add to Address Book or create new
ical event, that would rock.

Re: Music Notation software

2010-11-14 Thread Slau Halatyn
Even on the windows side of things, dancing Dots no longer develops the scripts
for Sibelius which is now up to version 6. The last accessible version through
scripts was for version 3.x. There was someone developing open source scripts
for version 5 but I'm not sure where that currently stands. Notation is
especially difficult to deal with from an accessibility standpoint. What made
it a bit easier in sibelius was the fact that there was a sort of control panel
that displayed all of the parameters for the current note position, that is,
pitch, duration, position in measure, articulation, etc. What made it possible
to have JaWS speak the various parameters was, of course, the scripting.
Unfortunately, the whole success rested on having all the windows positioned
just so and if anything was moved or out of place, there would be errors. Also,
if a new version came out, many things were broken and people were chronically
left behind in terms of versions.

I have to say, it's one of those things that's sorely missing for blind users
in general but especially on the Mac side of things.

Re: garage band 11 some simple step by steps?

2010-11-09 Thread Slau Halatyn
Keep in mind, also, that there's a hardware controller specifically made for
GarageBand which, I think, is made by M-Audio but I don't recall for sure. At
any rate, it used to be sold in the Apple Store so there would be a good place
to look first. Its layout is modeled after the GarageBand interface and it's
just a little quicker to reach for a hardware control sometimes rather than
navigating the interface with a screen reader. It's not that expensive either—I
seem to recall it being somewhere around $99 or even less.

HTH,

Slau

Re: Move addict now completely accessible

2010-07-08 Thread Slau
Hi Jon,

I don't know that the developer would necessarily get into creating a System
Preference pane now that he's completed the application in it's current form,
although it's entirely possible he might consider it in the future. I suppose
it would be a question for him if someone's interested in asking. Personally, I
think this application, which runs in the background, does essentially one
thing and does it seamlessly and transparently so I don't feel it's something
that requires a preference pane in System Preferences. Once the couple of
parameters are set, I doubt anyone would have a reason to change them.

That said, creating an alias would probably work just fine. It's not something
that someone could create on a given system and share with others since it's
specific to the paths of a given OS file system. Creating an alias, though, is
a very simple thing and, now that it's an easy prospect to simply move the
alias with MoveAddict, one can create the alias within the Resources folder,
cut it and paste it to the Applications folder. I'll give it a test run and, if
it doesn't work, I'll report back.

Re: Move addict now completely accessible

2010-07-08 Thread Slau
Hi Ray,

MoveAddict is a utility application that, once installed, runs in the
background and simply supports functionality that allows one to cut and paste
files within the Finder. Normally, files are copied and pasted, then the
original is deleted. A sighted user can simply drag a file to move it but,
until drag drop is implemented successfully, the only option for VoiceOver
users is to copy and paste. Now, with MoveAddict, it's possible to simply cut
and paste.

it a test run and, if it doesn't work, I'll report back.

Re: alias

2010-07-08 Thread Slau
An alias is simply a small file that points to another file. Much like
shortcuts to files on a Windows desktop, they can be used to point to other
documents or applications. Opening an alias opens the file it points to
elsewhere in the file system.

Annie,

To activate it:
1. copy your license number.
2. Navigate to MoveAddict in your Applications folder.
3. Bring up the contextual menu with Control-Option-m and select View Package
Contents.
4. In the Contents window, navigate to the Resources folder and find the
application named MoveAddict Preferences and open it.
5. Navigate to theabout tab and you'll find the License button which will
open a window with a field for your email address and a field for your license

Note that there seems to be a dialog box that sometimes appears. The last image

Re: any news on pro tools?

2010-05-30 Thread Slau Halatyn
Actually, there's voice feedback that they've worked on over a couple of years,
apparently. I was almost one of the testers and it literally came down to a
choice between the RADAR and Pro Tools while a RADAR demo system was being
loaded onto a truck to be delivered to the studio. Anyway, there's still always
that option for the future. PT is, of course, a completely different animal and
serves a different purpose and transferring sessions from RADAR to Pro Tools
continues to be a tedious prospect. Anyway…
On May 30, 2010, at 1:49 PM, Bryan Smart wrote:

In a lot of ways, the Radar should be just accessible out of the box. Not in
terms that it will speak to you, but just for the fact that it has a physical
control for just about every function. It isn't a full DAW, but is mainly
just a multitrack digital recorder. The really popular thing about the Radar
is that, because of all of the physical controls, it is also a magnificent
machine for editing. I don't mean a cut and paste here and there, but, if you
have a project where you must slice it up in to many tiny pieces, and
reassemble all of those pieces in a different way, or manually edit timing
mistakes, and you've memorized all of the shortcut commands, then you can
edit at a speed that someone working with a mouse would never be able to
match. Oh, if only there were a full DAW like that. However, the mind
boggling amount of keyboard-based editing support from Pro Tools isn't too
far away from that goal. Pro Tools keyboard support is way deeper than even
highly keyboard-focused DAWs like Sonar and Logic.

 Hi Frank,

Yes, from what I understand, IZ Technologies has worked with a few blind
individuals to make the RADAR accessible. For those who don't know, the RADAR
was conceived as a replacement for analog multitrack recorders. It is widely
regarded in the audio industry as being perhaps the best sounding digital
recorder in terms of it's analog to digital conversion. You can contact them
directly to get more information regarding accessibility.

I don't use a braille display. Also, the only instance where I need to refer to
the screen reader while monitoring audio is when taking levels. At that point,
I'm not really monitoring for sound, per se, just for signal so I simply dim

Hey Frank,

I had the same Otari remote. Physical switches are nice but not really
practical these days unless you're tracking to a RADAR which, by the way, is
accessible.

Anyway, when tracking live bands, one would simply arm all the tracks with one
keyboard command so it's not really an issue. Further, a control surface would

I am concerned about how efficient I can be when tracking. I used to record
using the remote for the Otari mx80 which had actual mini toggle switches for
track arming and play/record/repro. I have actually found someone who can
build me a remote with real switches for around $5,000. If I can have the
braille display cursor routing keys toggle the armed state and display the
state then I can have the same functionality but also get a braille display
out of the deal. I guess I'm going to have to learn how to do some Apple
 scripting.

I plan on doing lots of live tracking with full bands where I feel as though
I will need to have a speedy way of knowing the track armed state with out
having to listen to 24 or 32 status messages. I am really looking forward to
trying out the level monitoring. Do they have a tone generator following the
amplitude or just a numeric value with a peek hold setup?

Thanks for keeping us all informed.

Some buttons, since they're not automateable, are not seen in the plug-ins

someone who can build me a remote with real switches for around $5,000.
If I can have the braille display cursor routing keys toggle the armed
state and display the state then I can have the same functionality but
also get a braille display out of the deal. I guess I'm going to have to
learn how to do some Apple scripting.

I plan on doing lots of live tracking with full bands where I feel as
though I will need to have a speedy way of knowing the track armed state
with out having to listen to 24 or 32 status messages. I am really
looking forward to trying out the level monitoring. Do they have a tone
generator following the amplitude or just a numeric value with a peek hold
 setup?

Thanks for keeping us all informed.
