Re: transferring music into itunes library and then to my iphone
Hi Deneise: Should be pretty easy transfer. If the material you want to bring in isn't on your mac, copy the folder(s) to a flash drive and bring that to the Mac. Now, use the copy and paste to put them into your automatically add to iTunes folder. This is located in home, under music-itunes. If I've confused you, you can email me off list and I'll try harder to confuse you more.:) Take care. Oh, BTW: Once thos are added, they'll appear in your itunes library, and you can make whatever playlist(s) you wan to. They'll go to your iPhone the next time you plug it in and sync. These audio element control tool bars are doubtless familiar to you if you've pressed VO+space on an mp3 file from say www.blindcooltech.com to play the file right off the servers. anyhow, I decided to take a closer look, so, I searched for a title I knew was there; I mean on the site. When I found the book I was looking for, I nnavigated to it and, guess what, next to the word sample, there was an audio element control tool bar. At this point, I would have to conclude that the people at audible have heard us and made some major change to their page so that we no longer need to use the mouse method to play samples. As a qualifier, I must hasten to add that I have the anti flash extension, (I forgot the proper name of it for the moment), and, when I looked at the settings I had made for it, I found that it was set to buffer and start playing the video content automatically. With this in mind, I have two questions. 1. For those of you who also have this flash extension, have y'all noticed this difference in audible.com? 2. Re: considering iphone
Hi Greg: Well, I think you would probably really enjoy the iPhone immensely. I have just given mine up because of my hearing issues, and I miss it terribly. I'm transitioning to the iPad, but my whole life seems to have become so intricately tied into that iPhone in terms of keeping track of people, things, emails, even my prescriptions that a day doesn't go by when I don't lament having to give it up. Probably the most difficult thing for me was doing things with phone calls, because of the amount of dexterity required. Combine a tendency to screw things up when trying to hurry with a severe hearing loss, and you have a little idea what was a struggle for me. My best advice: Go into an Apple or att store. Get someone to set up Voiceover, and link up with someone you can call and talk with. The sister group to this one viph...@googlegroups.com is an excellent resource. A lot of people make good use of things like voice command to get the phone to call contacts, and also some use bluetooth headsets for more private operation of the device. Good luck. Hi Jane: I'm assuming you mean with itunes? If that's the case, you should have a purchased right berlow the itunes store in your sources list. Try going into mail and double tapping on the Reply button. You will get a popup in the top right hand corner. It is like a little menu that has various options, ie Reply, Reply All, Forward and Print. These options are below each other in a popup window. So if I had hit the Reply button instead of the Delete button and then wanted to cancel I could touch anywhere else on the screen other then in the popup menu and VO would say double tap to dismiss popup. IPad questions
Hi listers: I sent my first ever email on the iPad to this group. What do you know: it got rejected. It said the message was rejected by the recipient, and that I should check with the recipient's domain. That makes no sense, as it is receiving emails from this group. Any thoughts? Re: Switching Windows iTunes Library to Mac?
Hi Brianna: Guess I get to be the bearer of good news today!:) You can very easily transfer your pc itunes library to your mac. There are actually several ways. Probably the simplest would be to plug your touch into the Mac. Itunes should open, or if not, open it. It should tell you that your device is synced with another library and ask you if you want to synce, or transfer purchases. Another way you can do it is to turn on home sharing on both computers (assuming you have a wireless network). On your mac, look in the sources list for a remote library. Then, if memory serves correctly, you can import that into your mac's library. Finally, if these seem too risky in terms of messing with your device, you can copy the library to a flash drive and add the contents of the library to your automatically add to iTunes folder. (that folder is located in an itunes folder if you go to home and find the music folder. Re: Using a Macbook/MacBook Pro as Primary Computer?
Hi Brianna: I've found myself booting up my old Dell less and less frequently, in favor of the MBP.:) The battery is actually built in such a way as to not be affected adversely by memory. That is, it doesn't remember how much was left before you charge it. So, there's no adverse affect in that way. I guess I'd say the MBP has become my primary computer for most things, save scanning and printing labels. My little Dell and the Canon scanner are a pretty hot team to beat, and I'm afraid my dear Mac-alexander just can't beat them for convenience. I confess that at times, emails are easier to read at times with Jaws. But, even Safari is beating out my Firefox browser and I very rarely surf wit the Dell anymore. Questions are a good thing. more about laccessibility also itunes
Hi Everyone: I learned about some things today that for me were new and interesting. For some this may be old stuff. But, I consider the following things pretty interesting. This is regarding my one to one training today. 1. We looked at the website I had issues with. What it has is a lot of immages, and some text that is sort of in the background. We looked at it with Lynx, and certainly it made more sense. However, given that it involves terminal commands, my trainer suggested I not use Lynx until I'm a little mre seasoned, and I am completely in agreement with this. So, next, as an experiment, she went into browser preferences and under appearance she turned off display images when page opens.Well, not too cool for a sighted user. But, all of a sudden those text items in the background read very well. We also went to another difficult website, (my local grocery is at Kingsoopers.com). It too worked much more cleanly. Of course, the down side is a sighted person would be pretty unhappy with the screen as it is. So, good to know how to turn images back on when you're done.:) 2. I have a cd that for whatever reason imports very quiet in iTunes. Sound check didn't render any improvement. So, there are two places where one can make adjustments of which I was unaware. In preferences, weinteracted with the toolbar, chose playback, checked the box for soundcheck, and also oosted playback volume. When that didn't make the desired change, we went to get info, (command I), and to options. There another volume slider was available for the cd. Boosting that slider, the cd plays at the same level as other stuff now. Perhaps old stuff for some of us. But, these might be helpful to someone else so thought I'd share. Thanks for reading. Now I have to figure out or remember how to turn on images again.:) All part of the learning process. Take care everyone, and I'll be the first out on the limb to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, if you are celebrating. Re: safari questions
Hi Marlaina: Here's something else you can do to start to feel more comfortable with your mac. Press the command key and spacebar. This is called spotlight search. Now, type in either users guide or getting started. All of this info is actually right here on your mac, or easily reached on line. You just have to decide who's boss, and then just explore with things like spotlight search, menu browsing and interactive help windows when they come up. Also, you may want to go into VO utilities using CTL-option-f8. Re: changed iTunes server but purchases don't go there
Hey Marlaina: When you make a purchase, it goes into which ever user's name is loged in, and into their music section of the library. If you have differing accounts on the same computer, you would still be in your own library, and that's where purchases would go, unless you are using the same passwords. Re: My Eyepal demo is here.
Hi Erick: You have so hit the proverbial nail on the head here. I've been trying very hard to make vuescan work, to make anything work in terms of scanning. I have had absolutely no luck, even with a version that works for some, even with an Apple trainer very generously spending time with me on things. I finally took 100 pieces of mail and booted up my old Dell pc with it's even older version of openbook. I found a lot of missing stuff, and found out which bills I didn't pay while I was trying like heck to scan with my mac, and now have a credit ding. Strictly my fault. But, I was being obsessive/determined to get the mbp to scan for me. so, you've just laid it out in far nicer terms than I've been feeling just now. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is feeling like the MBP is a lot of things, but not a very good scanning solution for the average user. Thanks for spelling this out so succinctly. I was beginning to really beat myself up for not being able to make this work. Take care Carolyn Haas On Dec 12, 2010, at 6:01 AM, erik burggraaf wrote: Well now, Hold your horses, smiles. 2 grand is too much for this baby. No doubt about it. It's a testing ground for anything and everything and I'd take my crashing issues to a couple of actual windows pc's before I really worried about them. The unfortunate thing about the crashes from my standpoint is that I can't show the unit to a client if that's what it's going to do . Now having said all that, we've got a couple of off the shelf solutions for the mac for around a hundred bucks. You know what? They suck. I know a few really ambitious people on this list have gotten it to fly for them, and that's great, but a fare few of us here are high end computer users. You've got to realize, The vast majority of blind people are over the age of 60. They have interests and poppies and things they like to do and a computer is a great help to them, but they can't be having to worry about hardware compatibility, and they don't want 5 or 6 steps and 3 programs to do a simple scan and read. I'm not gonna take them through image capture, then fine reader, then text edit, only to find out that what they scanned didn't OCR properly. The first time that happens I'll lose my audience. You've got to face the fact that there is nothing for OCR on the mac that is simple as openbook or kurzweil, and you've especially got to face up to the fact that there's no one program on the mac that has as many features in one place as either of those two packages. For two grand, EyePal doesn't support enough languages. It's not integrated with all the services like RFBD and bookshare. It doesn't have a spell check, dictionary or thesaurus. it doesn't read currency. It doesn't have automatic calibration features that will optimize the camera settings for the particular text you are reading, lighting conditions and so on. What it does do, is handle large books really and I mean really well. It will allow my elderly mac-wealding clients to walk up, put down a document, hit a button and find out what's on the paper just like my windows clients can. Is that worth 2 grand? I'm not convinced, but I'm not ready to writhe it off until I get to see current software working on a real platform of my choosing. Meanwhile, I suggest you pour yourself another cup of coffee and mellow out. I know exactly how you feel. I felt the same way when the original knfb reader came out. Now that product is a stone-age brick and I could probably have one for $500 if I asked around. I'll tell you what though. I got those so and so's right where it hurt. You know what I did with there $3600 piece of astonishingly portable, nice-looking and effective technology? Oh ho ho you'll never believe this... I left it in the store. *rubs hands together with glee* That showed 'em. Now I've been working in AT for almost 3 years, all be it on the very bottom most rung of the ladder, and It's not like it was 10 years ago. They're still charging stupid amounts of money for high end screen readers and braille displays, mostly because it's tradition. They can charge it and people are paying, so you can't very well blame them. Newer technologies though are subject to the same laws of depreciation as every other damn thing. EyePal pricing just dropped in December. I'm hoping that applies to canadian sales as well. Next year it will go down again. The year after that, abisee will introduce something else and you'll be able to have one of these for a fraction of the cost
Re: My Eyepal demo is here.
Hi Dan: There are two and actually 3 programs in this thread: The first is a scanning device known as the eye-pal, which works in conjunctionn with a pc or Mac to easily scan and read printed material. The issue with that is the software to make it work on a Mac appears to require an additional $150. The second program is one that does both scanning and OCR. It's name is Vuescan, and it costs around $40. Drawbacks are that it worked well in trial but not so once I downloaded the updates. Also, It doesn't address orientation. So, you might have difficulty if you don't know which way a page is supposed to be oriented. finally, the third program being discussed isAbbyy which apparently has the best OCR, but has to be fed an image from either vuescan, or iPhoto. The printer mentioned apparently works with Abbyy. HTH Carolyn ]On Dec 12, 2010, at 6:58 PM, Dan Roy wrote: So, if I go out and buy an Epson TX110 and Abby I should be able to use it without VuScan? I don't want to go and beg for charity at this or that organization for a device which can rationally and marketably be proposed for half the price if not more with solid components. A church or a beneficial organization can instead then concentrate on real applications and research to benefit all the blind people at mid term instead of benefitting the little portion of blind people who will go to lengths to apply for subsidies and other protracted measures aimed at giving governements the clout to claim equality of rights. This money is not wanted, at from my perspective, as it creates an enteprise which is not up to par with what is really possible to do. Take for example the US government which shifted it's internal systems from buggy, slow and extremely expensive software from contractors to a mainstream platform. This is exactly what i mean though i can't criticize a device i have never touched and am just using this as a general direction . As for the makers of JAWS, i find it satirycal obviously and blatantly ludicrous and effectively wasting subsidy money to spend a year's worth of developement for a ffeature which allows you to Check basball and hockey scores. This totally broke the deal for me at a point when i thought i might have to get it for my cross platform network setup. Honestly, do they really think blind people are just cultured for baseball and hockey? It's such a an ironic situation that i almost cried after laughing my butt off listening to the freedom scientific guys talk about it's rich features in looking into details of the pro baseball season. On the other hand, this clarifies a much better view of the blind community. There are many elderly blind individuals who have had sight before and were probably fans of those sports, and this is where the money is going, feature requests. And therefore those organizations with money are pouring it in for basball and not interactivity or solutions to help younger blind users increase their cultures and capacities. Make them batmen and not baseballers. You'll hear VoiceOver say, Save as hotspot 1. Then, you can switch applications with Command-tab, do something else, and when you return to Preview press VO-1 to get back to your hot spot location so you can resume reading where you left off. This is a workaround, and the hot spot won't be saved if you have to restart VoiceOver or if you log out. This is a bug in Preview. If you can't read continuously after interacting, check your PDF Display settings under the View menu on Preview's menu bar (VO-M to the menu bar, press V to go to the View menu, arrow down, press P to go to PDF Display, right arrow to the submenu, then arrow down to see which display mode is checked. The default is Single Page Continuous. If Single Page is checked, VoiceOver will stop reading at the end of each page. This setting can be useful if, for some reason your PDF book starts reading each page in the middle due to a conversion or format problem. In Preview you can Command-Right arrow to move to the next page, Command-Left arrow to move the previous page. Also, if your PDF supports Table of Contents organization, and you have navigated and interacted with the Outline View where the contents are listed and selected a section (e.g., for one of the Take Control guides, after downloading and opening the eBook in Preview, tab to Outline View, Table, no selection; interact, and select a section, then stop interacting and VO-Left arrow to the main document section of Preview, you can then use Command-Up arrow to move to the start of the previous chapter and Command-Down arrow to move the start of the next chapter. These correspond to the places you would select by navigating up and down in the Outline View. If the sidebar is not showing Outline view, but is instead displaying thumbnails or search results because you used Command-F to find a string in the document, you can use item chooser menu to search for Menu Button (e.g., VO-I, then type b u t, press return, and arrow down to the selection and either press return or VO-Space), then bring up the contextual menu (VO-Shift-M) and arrow up to Table of Contents. VO-Up arrow to the Outline view, interact, and select a section from the contents. This only works if the PDF document was constructed with a viewable table of contents -- you won't find this menu option in PDF files you simply create by printing with Command-P and saving to PDF. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. If you're not sure, you can simply google open office. On that site, search for your download link. It might say, click here to download, or download link, or just give the software name, in this case, open office. It will probably display as an EMG file, which is a common format for apps to download in. Assuming you've located the link, simply vo space to select it, and vo space to begin your download. The window will change to display download list, and you'll be downloading your file. It will give you an option to press clear. which you can safely do to help you determine if your download is done. It won't close that down unless it's finished. You can also close that list window and continue about your other business. If you try to shut Safari downn before the download's through, it'll warn you. Ok, now your file is very likely in downloads. You can go command H to home, and/or get yourself to downloads and find that file and open it. It will either start installing, or show a file to start the process. Hopefully, this will at least give you a rough idea what the process should be. Re: not getting copy of sent messages
Hi Mafk: You can also do this through filters with Google rememberng that the field that is marked to gets the group name, and the field that says has the words also gets the group name. Hello Ezzy: There is also something handy called the web item roter which you can set up to allow you to move quickly to links, headers, frames etc. You can invoke the roter by pressing VO-keys U.
