RE: I need help getting from Lion to Sierra after reformatting my hard drive
Hi Jerry, Easy enough to do if you have the sierra installer! If you don’t then it’s trouble. Either way it’s going to involve wiping your entire machine back to out of the box state. Do you by any chance have the sierra installer app available and are able to create a USB Flash Drive installer. The first thing I did was label the unlabelled buttons. Press shift Vo H on each button to hear the help tag for each button, most will have one, then Copy what is said to the clipboard with shift VO C and then bring up the Voiceover Labeller by pressing VO / and then pasting in the contents of the help tag. You can label the vast majority of buttons with this method. This may help you get started. You also need to go to the menu bar and select quicktime as your output codec. Tweaking Mountain Lion
Now for some smaller questions. In Mail (Mountain Lion) is it possible to simplify things and get rid of Smart Folders? Or at least have a setup like that used in Thunderbird where I only see my mail accounts in the left pane, open one and only see the associated mailboxes. I am not using a unified mailboxes there. Also in Thunderbird it has Local Folders to which emails can be moved to be stored on the local drive. If Mail uses that concept, does it have a similar name? Is Preview the archiving utility? Is it all one needs or is a 3rd party app like The Unarchiver needed? I have Voiceover set to my liking but when system related information is spoken, its I think using default settings. Can this be changed? Currently I use iTunes in Windows to backup my iPhone. How should I transfer this task over to the Mac? This is it for now, I hope. Thanks. Re: The end of all OS X Lion support, patches included, is likely just weeks away
At the moment, Apple supports Lion, which is two versions back. But Lion is the last version of OS X for many Macs, just as Snow Leopard was previously. In other words, it seems to have shifted from supporting one version prior to two versions. Perhaps that's intentional, perhaps not. Perhaps Apple will go back to supporting one version back, in which case it will support only Mavericks, or perhaps it will support two versions back, in which case it will be supporting Mountain Lion as well, but it will no longer support Lion. Or, perhaps it will give Lion users a bit more time, as it did with Snow Leopard, in which case it would be supporting three versions behind. Who knows? There's really no way to read Apple's support policy. Apple doesn't take appeasing security people very seriously, sadly. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: The end of all OS X Lion support, patches included, is likely just weeks away
If your Mac was made in 2007 or later and has a discrete GPU, you ought to be alright. It's the poor sods with Intel GMA950 who are in real trouble, because 64-bit drivers were never made for it; that means that Lion, which although it was a 64-bit OS could still start a 32-bit kernel, was the last practical release of OS X that could run on that hardware. As to running Lion on older hardware, unfortunately the performance is horrible with limited amounts of RAM, which means that using Windows or Linux may very well be the only way to recover the hardware. That is, of course, if Lion is maintained at all; otherwise it's obviously going to be a requirement. It's nice to see Apple trying harder to upgrade older hardware, but ultimately they're a hardware company and they really don't care how old your OS is as long as you keep buying new stuff from them every five minutes. Also, as I've said before, I'm not very enthusiastic about Apple's current focus with OS X, which effectively appears to be to attract as much of the iOS-using population as possible. Yes, I know it's good business, but I'm not interested in making Apple more money, I'm interested in being a happy customer. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. While Apple hasn't said -- it never does -- when it will release Mavericks 10.9.5, it's almost certain to be the last update that includes non-security bug fixes, the kind of performance and reliability improvements that Mac owners hunger for, or changes to existing features in the OS, Keizer reports. Both Lion (OS X 10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8) reached x.x.5 and no further, for instance... [It's] likely that Apple will deliver Mavericks 10.9.5 some time in September. More important than the delivery date for the last non-security Mavericks refresh is the fact that the same day will also mark the end of security patches for 2011's Lion, or OS X 10.7, Keizer reports. Halting patches for OS X Lion customers would, of course, be painful -- and potentially risky -- for them, but Apple probably won't blink an eye. As of July, Lion accounted for just 10% of all versions of OS X in use, according to metrics company Net Applications. By the end of September, Lion's user share will be about 8%, assuming it continues to drop at the rate it has over the last six months. That will be less than half of Snow Leopard's share when Apple pulled its plug last year. -- Christopher Hallsworth Student at the Hadley School for the Blind www.hadley.edu -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: how to create a Mavericks installer USB drive using a mountain lion machine?
Hi Georgina and Sabahattin, Thanks so much. The problem is solved. Mavericks now runs freshly on my macbook. With ml and earlier, it was easy to simply unpack the big dmg file for the operating system, found in the downloaded app bundle. to a USB drive. This new way of doing it was unknown to me. This time I did not have to go through these hoops, but I'm definitely saving your messages for future use. I found out about an interesting change in disk utility in Mavericks, when compared to the older mountain lion version, just for those interested. In ml and earlier, if you booted from the recovery mac partition, command r after the chime while turning the computer on, then we could not delete the macintosh hd partition with disk utility, as long as it was still encrypted. The process was tedious. I used to have to boot up normally, turn of filevault, then let it do its decryption process which takes hours, and only then can you reboot into the recovery partition, and delete the macintosh partition from there. Now with Mavericks, this is different. Whether or not macintosh hd is encrypted, you can now wipe it using disk utility, before doing a reinstall from the recovery partition. Paul. Re: how to create a Mavericks installer USB drive using a mountain lion machine?
Yep, the reason for that you can't use Disk Utility to repartition is that it doesn't yet support manipulating CoreStorage groups, which is what FileVault-encrypted volumes and Fusion Drives are made from. So if you have one of these, you have to drop to the command line to delete the CoreStorage group before you can go back to partitioning with Disk Utility. In your case though, erasing the volume was perfectly sufficient to get you reinstalled, so you should be fine. Re: how to create a Mavericks installer USB drive using a mountain lion machine?
This can be done, yes, but it's a bit tougher because the tool that Mavericks supplies for creating media only itself runs on Mavericks, rather unhelpfully. In summary, what you must do is restore the base system disk image, BaseSystem.dmg, onto your freshly-formatted USB stick, and then copy over the packages in the installer. The BaseSystem.dmg file is inside the InstallESD.dmg file, itself inside the app bundle. Restore that image to your USB stick. Finally, delete the Packages alias from /System/Installation on your stick, and replace it with the Packages folder from your outer InstallESD.dmg image. If you like, when I've got more time, I could set up an environment with which to test and get you step-by-step directions. In the meantime, hopefully someone else can help you, but that's the face of it. Cheers, Sabahattin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Going back to mountain lion
Hi, I'll state this mantra. Always backup your hard drive before a major OS update. Repeat it daily. At least in the US, the access to Mountain Lion in the app store is not available Apple wants you to run Mavericks. SO, unless you have a version of the ML installer saved, or you have a backup of your old drive, let me welcome you to the world of Mavericks. So, where is your backup of Mountain Lion? Because the answer is different depending on your answer. Best, --k Faith doesn't give you the answers, it merely stops you from asking the questions. Re: problems with trying to reinstall lion
Good Day: Did you try looking in the window chooser. Generally, this is how I have found the dialog for signing into the App store. Note that if you do find the dialog with the window chooser, you may have to use the VO commands to move the mouse on to the field for the Apple ID and click before you can actually enter the required information. Hopefully, that make some form of sense. HTH: Henry Education never ends. It is a series of lessons with the greatest for the last. Safari in Mountain Lion
Last night I took a stab at using Safari in Mountain Lion. It got ocnfusing so hope I can get some pointers. First a basic question. When I load a page VO reads it all non stop. In a nutshell,, what is a typcal way to navigate in Safari? I know I will get used to it eventually. Now specifically, I had bought an app and need to go find it and see where it went. I went to the Purchases tab and there were 4 apps that need attention (not siftware yupdates but something about Apple needing to verify eligibility). I think there was an accept button to act on the 4 apps but could not land on it. Then the app I paid for last night. I got lost while verifying my Apple ID since it was the first time used on the Mac. Straightened that out. Now I need to know how this process is handled, when one buys an app on the Mac. Need to buy another one later so would like to learn what to expect so its smooth sailing. Part of this learning curve is knowing how to navigate a web page. Thanks for any assistance in this regard. problems with trying to reinstall lion
hello everyone. I tried to do a clean install of Lion yesterday and got only as far as the dialog verifying computer eligibility with the appstore. It sat there and did nothing. I even waited an hour and still it did nothing. I restarted and retried and still got stuck at that point. I checked my internet (working and machine connected) and checked anything else that may have contributed to this. I even used wireshark on a linux box to monitor the connection. What I got from that was that the machine tried to communicate with the app store but there didn't appear to be a return response. Anyone have any clues here? The reason I am going for a clean install is that my old installation (which I am using from a time machine backup) has some problems. THese problems include: excessive CPU usage on some apps, random crashes and voiceover lockups. anyone have suggestions? -eric -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Brandon, Thanks. I have not gotten back to this yet but will. I have been texting on the iPhone and when I have opened the conversation, I only need to get to the edit field and type in it. It does not work like that in Messages? When you say I interact with the table and select the one I want (which I have done), then activate the compose button, I still need to select the recipient? I can understand doing this if there are no conversations. I sure will also try to chat using the steps you outlined. Thanks. Quote of the nanosecond . . . Resolved the calendar problems in Mountain Lion
Hello Jim all, I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I was using VO-spacebar to open up the Event Details, which was not the correct command to use with this item. I needed to interact with it, which resolved my problem of not being able to access the event details area. Although I have been able to figure this out for the Mac, I am still having some difficulties in finding the list button in the calendar app on my iPhone4 using iOS 7.0.6. May be others on this list can give me some pointers on how to access the list view on the phone. When I perform the CMD-N in calendar, it brings me to a quick view in the inspector. I have never use this function, so are there any tips tricks inputting the right buzz words to have the info placed in the right edit fields? I look forward to any suggestions to utilize this function more efficiently. thanks in advance. Ok now that I am back home, I am going to tackle this again. I dont recall setting a keychain password so this part confused me today and I should not have rushed into resetting the login password. So I need to understand this. What is the keychain for, and is it the same thing as the iCloud keychain on the iPhone? One of the options I saw earlier was to create a new keychain. I take it that is what I want since I dont remember setting one before. And hopefully, once I am done with this,, I can get to work. :) Quote of the nanosecond . . . It is usually something that the user has little interaction with as it unlocks with their login password. Basically, it encrypts and keeps all of your secure data in one place. Hi Robert, Glad to see you here. I made the switch from windows a few months ago and haven't regretted it. Are you aware of the interactive tutorial for vo? To start the tutorial press command vof8. It's divided into several sections with a section to practice what's been discssed for that particular tutorial section. Since you're in the tutorial, you don't have to worry about accidently performing some action. Check it out if you haven't already. Robert, Do you happen to have a bluetooth neckloop. Mine works very well. Don't useit much now that I've lived with the speech for a while, but it was a real when getting started. Also I had to adjust some of the speech settings for better understandability, especially the intonation setting, but the settings really are personal. I do suggest playing around with them though. I haven't tried this myself, but you might also get a wired loop to work through theheadphone jack. Just some ideas. At first, I alsoslowed the speech rate down a bit, but I've gotten used to it, so havespeeded it back up. Don, Yes, have done that and found Alex the perfect voice tho I usually prefer female. Could buy more voices but was told Mavericks has better ones already so will wait until I upgrade, which will be a while. When I know what I will hear, I get it pretty well. Also have been using the VO w-w command tho it goes faster than the speech rate I set. Oh and the neckloop, yes got those too. Right now using wired. Quote of the nanosecond . . . About to tear my hair out trying to search in iTunes Store on My old MacBook with Mountain Lion and iTunes
Hello all. Although Apple claims that one has access to purchased movies across devices through iCloud, this is apparently not true if you download originally on your iPhone. So, I got Apple to reestablish the ability to purchase the movie I originally downloaded to my iPHone via the iTunes store. Now, however, I cannot get to the movie. I cannot find a search box anywhere. I select movies, then action and adventure from the pop-up menu, but I cannot locate the search box. I have tried looking under browse, explore, and quick links. I have gone through headings, links, etc., with the rotor. I have typed in the word search using search, but am getting that annoying error sound. I can determine absolutely no way of finding this movie on my MacBook. I have done a Google search trying to locate workarounds. If someone can assist, I would appreciate it. Check your library. The key for entering the search is command+F. IF you are using the new standard view, you want to look just to the right of the search box. There is a pop up menu which, when you open it, will take you to different parts of your library. Also, you might want to make sure that show content for Icloud is turned on. This, I believe, is done from the store menu. Sent from my Mac, the only computer with full accessibility for the blind built-in! Re: lion is pretty good
Hi, I have someupdates regarding the topic of operating systems on the mac. I since had to buy 2 chargers including the one i posted about because they broke. Ever since the last post, I've updated to Mavrics on my mac and has been great. the integration of iCloud with my mac and iPhone has been a lot easier since i can readily access my reminders mail and contacts on both computer and phone simultaneously. I also got a new bag to carry my laptop around when I go to my internships and it fits my braille display with its other components and papers pretty easily with room to spare which is necessary since I commuted from home to the city. It does get heavy because of the equipment I need to lug around which sometimes makes me sore, but it's worth the effort to be productive. Maybe I should lighten the load a bit, but I need most of the stuff to get me through the day. The other when I put my computer to sleep in Mountain Lion on an iMac 2010 with command option F12 or whatever the key is right after the F12 key my computer a minute or two awakes. I have been putting my computer to sleep like this for years. I now have to mute VO and just leave it on all night. Any clue to what could be happening here? Thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Two New Weird Problems in Mountain Lion
Hi Brian, The key beside the f12 is the Eject key. Check in the Energy Saver System Pref pane, in the Power Adaptor tab, make sure the “Wake for Network Access” is not checked. This normally isn’t supposed to affect your machine if it is not plugged in but it could be a bug. Alternatively, if you have one of the newer units that can “Power Nap”, it could be waking for some backing up or syncing process that can occur during it’s nap. As for iTunes launching, my first thoughts are that you may have plugged in an iDevice, or have pressed an iTunes media key or a button on a remote for your bluetooth speakers. Saving attachments in Lion
Hi all. I'm running Lion on my macbook. I receive the today show as a podcast in my email. How can I save the mp3 file to listen to it on my victor reader stream? When I try to save attachments in the file menu it says that option is dimmed. Thanks for any help. Re: What is the name of Nuance's voices called in Mountain Lion?
Hi Shawn, interesting. I wonder if Nuance have brought those extra voices then. I personally wouldn't use them myself but its good to know that there around for someone who may like those voices. I have another question if I may. Basically, in the other world of computers I was using Windows and have a purchase copy licence of Jaws 12. With this version of Jaws it was using the real speak solo direct version of Nuance. If you know, could you tell me say what version of this TTS engine this is in Nuance's terms and how many versions does it differ from Mountain Lion which I'm using on my Mac. Anyone for that matter if you know then feel free to inform me. Hi Daniel. I can't remember but I think Jaws used version 4 of RealSpeak solo. Hi Daniel. I think that it's version 4 because Nuance after that made Vocalizer Automotive which you can also download in Jaws. What is the name of Nuance's voices called in Mountain Lion?
Hi all, a quick question. Its purpose being just simply curiosity. Using Mountain Lion what is the name of the Nuances voices actually called in this version of the OS? For instence, I understand it to be Vocalizer Expressive in Mavericks. I may have some follow-up questions down the line but this 1st will do for now. Re: What is the name of Nuance's voices called in Mountain Lion?
Hi Daniel. Well, in Vocalizer expressive they've made more voices, including 4 voices that used to be in Loquendo, Alison, Susan, Kate and Vina. Also they improved the voice quality to some of the voices like the Australian Karen voice. -- Shawn Sent From My White MacBook Using SamNet -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: What is the name of Nuance's voices called in Mountain Lion?
Hi Brian, I was asking about the actual name/version of the TTS's that Nuance are using with Mountain Lion. So, my question was more about the name of the version that Nuance call them on Mountain Lion. Not the actual names of the individual voices you can get e.g. Karen, Samantha etc. I hope this makes sense. Sorry if I've comfused you. lol You can find out about your voices by going to VO utility, speech in the table VO right to the pop up button. open with VO space and arrow down to custom VO space again. A new dialog box should open. navigate to the search field and type in here the word english and after that you should have all the english voices you can use with Voiceover. hth Daniel On 2 Dec 2013, at 18:33, Brian Fischler blindga...@gmail.com wrote: How do you know if this is the voice that is installed, as I think I just have names of voices. Hey Daniel, No worries, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on some better voices as I am constantly hearing about people buying voices, so was curious to where people have been getting them.
