The CD is live, meaning that you can then boot to the CD and it will run Linux straight off the CD without installing anything on your hard drive. If you have a high speed internet connection, Mepis should detect this also and give you internet connectivity straightaway. You can try the Konqueror browser on Mepis- I have found that it often does a better job of rendering MicroSoft created pages than does Mozilla and others. Re: [MBZ] Premium Gas or Not?
Look in the owners manual and all will be revealed. The problem is that low octane fuel will make the engine run like poo because the thing will retard itself to compensate and therefore you will have less power and higher fuel consumption. I run my 230E on 95 octane (over here 91 is standard and 98 is ultra premium) which it seems happy with. I have tried 91 but it sounds like a diesel (no self retardation in the K-jetronic setup) and with 98 there seems to be no difference when compared to 95. Not only power but mileage as well. 87 is cat wee not fit for Benz consumption. It has to be remembered that Merc engines are build well and need good food to do well. If you want to cheap out buy a cheap brand car. By the way, the later engines are self adjusting as far as timing goes so there is no need to get the timing light out. Re: [MBZ] OT: Browser that's a close approximation of IE page displays?
Not to start an argument, but the reason non-IE users have trouble is IE/Microsoft -- they are almost as bad as Apple for strange implementations of standards. This is not an accident, but deliberate attempts to prevent anyone else developing a usable product. I don't use IE for several reasons (mostly lousy support for my Macs, but also ActiveX virus susecptibilty) -- I strongly resent web pages and so forth that won't run properly on other people's browsers, most of which outperform IE when incompatible code is removed. If I'm forced to quite using Macs, I will switch to Linux -- the hassle of making Unix operate is more than worth the effort to get free of Microsoft. 'nough said. Peter

Re: [MBZ] Premium Gas or Not?
My rule of thumb on the octane issue is thus: If you have KE-Jetronic and no knock sensor, do NOT use anything but premium on the highway. Midgrade is OK around town, but you really need the knock protection on the interstate as the engine cannot retard the ignition timing if it knocks. Burnt valves is the usual result. On later models with LH-Jetronic and knock sensors, remember that retarding the timing will reduce both power and milage -- you will have to run both, keep accurate records, and decide whether the lower price is actually a savings for you own particular circumstances. I know that on several of my older cars, including my Mom's old Fairmont station wagon and the work van (with 300,000 miles on it!), the accumulation of crud on the piston crowns raised the compression ratio enough that regular rattled pretty badly. Premium cured the spark knock, and the increase in power and milage more than paid the difference. It is entirely possible to have the milage drop so badly from retarded timing that it's more expensive to run regular than premium. You also risk damage to the catalytic convertor/oxygen sensor running late timing on acceleration all the time. Peter

Hey Peter, I've always found that a good rule to follow regarding octane is the higher the engine compression the higher the octane. High octane fuel burns slower which allows for a more complete combustion. Most engines with a 10-1 or higher compression require higher octane fuel because it burns slower and because higher compression engines will knock severely if the fuel burns to fast just my 2 cents 69 280 SEL 120,000 Miles 72 350SL 108,000 Miles 2004 VW Passat 4 Motion 1999 Mazda Miata -Original Message- From: Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thu, 19 Jan 2006 18:18:15 -0600 Subject: Re: [MBZ] Premium Gas or Not? Re: [MBZ] 190DT Head Gasket
On Thu, Jan 19, 2006 at 07:59:58PM -0500, frederick w moir wrote: Hi, All. I'm planning on doing the head gasket (to music wearing funny blue clothes) on my '87 190DT this weekend and I've a few question to ask about what i may find:- 1. Turbo oil supply, is it just remove and replace? 'o' rings? No suitable o-rings in gasket set or midget gaskets either. 2. Assuming that the head has not been grossly overheated, may the head be just cleaned, checked for cracks and flatness and re-installed? 3. Anyone with pearls of wisdom please respond. (I know I'm asking for it.) Assuming a 602 is like a 603, whatever seal was on the turbo oil supply I was able to reuse. The head on a 602 is more durable, so the likelihood of fatal cracks is pretty low. There might be some cracks, but the head will probably still pass a pressure test. Examine the head gasket upon removal, and see if it was a gasket failure that caused the problem. Also assuming a 602 is like a 603, you'll need a pin puller to pull the pins that hold the timing chain rail to the head. I made one with a M6-1.0 bolt about two inches long, a handful of flat washers (four to six, I think), a 3/4 long nipple (from the plumbing section), and a nut that threaded onto the bolt. This was obviously cheaper than buying the correct tool. Speaking of tools, you're going to need an XZN (triple square) driver to get the head bolts off. If you reuse the head bolts, you'll need a dial gauge/ verneer calipers to measure the maximum allowable stretch. Again assuming the 602 is like a 603, the head will come off with the header and turbo attached. While the head is aluminum, it isn't exactly light with the exhaust manifold and turbo attached. Above all, do NOT do this without the procedure for removing the cam. The cam is hollow, and will snap if you remove the bolts holding the cam down in the wrong order. If Brian Toscano is still lurking around, he did this about a year and a half ago on a friend's 190Dt. Good luck. K

Yes The easiest way to determine which is to unscrew the line going to the brake booster and start the engine and see if you have vacuum. Alternately, you can separate the tube at the first junction and plug in a vacuum gauge. If you have vacuum, than the booster or something else in the line is suspect. Re: [MBZ] 190DT Head Gasket
I'd take it to a machine shop and get the head checked, valve guides checked and replaced if worn, new valve seals, etc. while you have it off. Good luck. Re: [MBZ] mistakes ... now OR gas rant
My understanding from having ridden in OR and having a bunch of us descend upon a station, as well as having a pal as DM for BP. The pump monkey is able to service a number of cars simultaneously while he can only do one bike at a time. More anal bike riders get peeved when the monkey scratched the paint of his pretty bike, and spilled fuel really got them going. If there are six pumps, the bikes will take all the hoses and be gone in five gallons. More time is spend processing payment. With six cars, the pumps are doing 10-20 gallons and there is time to deal with each individual client. Also found that with a diesel, the monkey will ignore you and allow you to pump, since he is not interested in smelling like fuel, and more able to service the petro cars On Thursday, January 19, 2006, at 12:21 PM, Levi Smith wrote: Personally I think self-serve bikes in a full-serve station makes no sense. learn something new everyday. Tim C wrote: Heh, I'm new to the diesel fold and so far am finding it very cool. I find it especially interesting that I was warned how slow the car would be, even with turbo, etc - ok, it's not that fast (and neither is my 944, so I'm not really used to blinding acceleration) - but it's certainly better at moving than I thought. In other words, anyone that says diesel is not cool just doesn't know how good reasonable amounts of torque feel. I've already surprised a few people with El Barge. It also amuses me that, due to the aforementioned 2-3 shift flare, I've been taking it easier - waiting till 3rd to really get rolling - with just a little patience, it gets to the torque band and isn't really all that slower than if you thrash it in 2nd. Yeah, diesel IS cool! Also - it is not correct (or, actually, is nothing special) to say the guy urinated in the back of the car. Urination is the process by which the kidneys secrete urine to the bladder, and this is a constant process. Micturation is the actual operation of voiding the bladder. The regular dictionary doesn't quite get this right...anyone that tells you otherwise is simply stercoraceous. T -- Kaleb C. I love hitting the dealer in Gump and looking really scruffy. Pick up my part, and then hang out REALLY close to the showroom cars. Get really close so that maybe the buttons on the 501s will scratch the finish. Gets them on their toes and offering you coffee to walk away from the expensive cars. and by the way, I think its insane to have to be approved to sign up for a list and be moderated at first. Its stunts the growth of the list and puts everyone in a state of fear. Yea, and its the reason MBZ.org started, which in turn is the reason for this list. You see, Sexton, Hursty, myself, then a few other people were banned and sexton started mbz.org. (Don't worry, I'm just heading to parts, man) LOL...been there, done that. At Star Motorcars in Houston, you used to have to walk through the showroom to get to the parts desk. When they built the new showroom, they put the parts desk entrance outside so us peons could get in without anyone seeing us. Mercedes Houston North even built a separate building, although the parts desk is right next to the service waiting room. Last time we (wife and I) walked into a Benz dealership (Des Moines, to buy a couple of $1 parts) they INSISTED that I sit in a 600-series SL. Sales lady asked what I thought, and I was honest, telling her that my white ass felt really good sitting there in a $140K car. Then I told her that my salary was sub-$30K a year. [MBZ] OT - Genset - MD-3
In '58, on flightline at Lincoln AFB, NE, a flt crew was starting engines (gas turbine, of course) on a B-47. The engine starters were electric. Normally, when starter switch was engaged, the sudden call for more amperage by the starter would cause the aux. ground power unit (MD-3, driven by reciprocating, gasoline engine in this case) to rock a bit as it suddenly surged and groaned to produce the required power. As this crew engaged starter for one of the engines, the MD-3 did a couple of flips/rolls. The jet engine had seized, causing the starter to suddenly overload the MD-3. Wilton

Re: [MBZ] 190DT Head Gasket
Hi Fred, In addition to the excellent post by Kevin, I'd definitely change the valve guide seals while you have easy access. Ask Rusty for the Genuine Mercedes seal kit. Wouldn't hurt to have a machine shop check it for flatness, etc... cracks should be visible to the naked eye if there are any (probably won't be on a 602). This is also a good time to change any noisy lifters... when you squeeze the button on the underside of the lifters, it should be quite firm, even solid. If it squishes in easily, it's probably a bad lifter. I had 5 of 12 old ones fail this very rudimentary test. All the new ones were rock solid, and quiet. About $25 each from Rusty. Check chain stretch while it's apart, replace chain if stretched 4 degrees or more. Replace the upper chain guide rail (it's really cheap), and you may need two new rail pins, if the old ones don't look healthy upon removal, or were damaged when removing. The OE/dealer XZN head bolt tool is quite reasonable, btw - under $20 last time I checked. If you want/need to pull the prechambers for any reason, I'm selling the tools for that and will be happy to make you a deal! :-) +dm -- Date: Thu, 19 Jan 2006 19:59:58 -0500 From: frederick w moir [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [MBZ] 190DT Head Gasket Hi, All.
