That looks like 1/8 viton .. 3.175mm.. sounds close enough. What about
abrasion resistance? How much pressure do those lines see-- it is gravity
rated only. (and also not bend radius rated) BTW it is almost impossible
to clamp anything on the barbs of a 606 injector since they sit pretty

Did you ever get nervous because things seem too good?
Pulled an oil sample today, thanks again to Larry for his excellent oil

Anyway even after pulling the pittance needed for analysis (half pint?) my

max. This is after 5000 miles. The previous owner told me it would leak a quart
in 5000 miles. I replaced the leaking (obviously leaking) oil cap seal but
nothing else.

Curt - I had an occasional steering wobble on my SD - only felt it at
highway speeds with a mild left curve. Finally the tires stopped in the
right spot so that I could see a flat spot developing. Changing the tires
took care of it.

Phew! Good stuff! Lots of perspectives. That was truly funny that that
Harley rider mistook the Kawi for one. It's like how? In terms of
mistaking,
it's getting harder to tell a Harley from a Euro bike because they have
been
trying to hard to emulate (though this may be dying back now). But some
of
the Japanese bike makers have actually de-designed their engines, going
to a
pushrod config. just to achieve that Harley sound. Sometimes they
actually
fool me audibly from a distance these days.

Re: [MBZ] tire prices

2006-05-18 Thread RELNGSON
I bought Yokohama tires for my LandCruiser at Tire Rack(good
prices, no sales tax) and had them installed at a new Super WalMart(new
balancing machines) with lifetime balance and rotation for $7.95/tire(I
think they have since stopped doing this for tires not purchased at WM) and
watched through the window as the tech used a torque wrench to tighten the
lug bolts..

I have been buying from Discount Tire at TireRack prices (just ask) which
means no mounting charges (I do pay for balancing) and includes lifetime
balancing and flat repairs. And local warranty service.

They do add on a fee to approximate the freight charge I would have had to
pay if I bought from TireRack.

TireRack, now the country's largest tire retailer, pretty much sets the
prices for every tire store. If you are smart enough to ask.

You are right, The clips and gasket have no bearing. I copied the whole
list from John's earlier post when he did his 606.

The 82 617 should have the newer style pump, because my 81 240D does. (not
vacuum governor) I am not sure if the delivery valves are hex or
serrated. Either way, the o-ring and copper seal number should be the
same. I believe they are the same back to the OM 621 engine at least, and
that is 1960 or so. The mechanical governor pumps are all essentially the
same in the delivery valve area.

[MBZ] DIY tire repair

2006-05-18 Thread Harry Watkins
I bought Harbor freight and JC Whitney equipment, a few patch supplies and I
now do my own.

After experiencing the same kind of bad things I hear about and read on these
lists, I am giving it a try. Actually, even though its grunt work, I get real
satisfaction from doing a quality repair.

I first use soapy water to find and mark the leaks, do a quick clean, dismount
the tire, do an inside inspection with a spreader, wire brush the rim, patch
from the inside with a mushroom patch, remount, apply bead seal, air it up,
check for leaks, balance and reinstall with proper torque

The first one took me two hours but I've cut that in half.

Anyone out there that can share knowledge and experience with me?

The 0-ring goes on the delivery valve holder, and seals the upper
feed chamber in the pump. when they go bad, the pump leaks fuel
around the delivery valve holders. The copper seal is inside (on top
of the valve body on the 60x pumps, under it on some others). The
copper ring seals the delivery valve/injection line interface, and if
it leaks it will leak back into the fill chamber, not externally. That
leak will cause late (or no) injection at idle, as the pressure in the
line falls off well below the pop pressure.

[MBZ] Shudder upon shutoff

2006-05-18 Thread Zoltan Finks

Does the shaking that the diesel engine does upon shutoff cause motor mounts
to wear out more quickly than in a gas engined car? I wonder about this
every time I shut off the engine. It would seem that it has to put a
considerable strain on things. Perhaps the mounts are designed to take it? I
am talking about my 83 240D and like vehicles.

Those who don't appreciate such a simple question, simply delete, please.

Brian
83 240D

excerpt from Edmunds.com review of E300 CDI

Perhaps the most obvious sign that there was a diesel under the hood was an
occasional shudder when the engine was shut off.

None of mine shudder much unless the mounts are bad -- the 300D thumped
horribly until I got both mounts in, then it was very smooth. The 220D
and my brother's 75 300D both shut down nicely, but then they both have
new mounts.

Re: [MBZ] Torque for delivery valve holder

2006-05-18 Thread Joe Knight

You're quite right, Bob - this list can be a real hoot. If you go
deep enough into Bruce's pump to find an o-ring the pump's prolly due
for a trip to the test stand for recalibration. The copper seal for
that pump is 005 997 45 48 and the proper torque is *40-50 Nm on the
pipe connection in one step*, unless there's been a tsb radically
revising that procedure to something approximating what's appropriate
for an OM603 pump for which btw the appropriate final torque is
something more like 27 ft-lb than 30 (at least I think that's right,
but I'm miles from home and without my trusty tdm). But then what's a
margin of error of 10% more or less, between friends... ;(

I think the mini shocks by the motor mounts help to control shudder. A
shutoff valve that is starting to leak might also causes a shudder -
the fuel isn't cut off quickly.

I thought that most shops had moved beyond using impact wrenches on wheels.
But maybe that's just what they tell you if you ask.

I bought some Fuzion tires from TireRack. Just wanted to save money. No
complaints yet. Supposedly from the makers of Bridgestone. I only have some
5k mi. on them yet though.

I had a hard time finding a place that would mount someone else's tires -
especially for a decent price. A few places said they had a higher rate for
doing tires they did not sell you. Of course, a few places gave me a
different story each time I'd call. That is disturbing.

The good news is that I found a nice source for inexpensive
moutning/balancing. This will only help those of us in rural regions. The
Farm and Fleet store. Here, it's called Fleet Farm. Of course, I imagine
that they'd not be too sensitive to tourquing things properly. I didn't wind
up using them, as I had an exhaust pipe fall off (not talking about the
Mercedes) and thus had to take it in to Midas - they mounted the tires
there.

Brian,

Don't trust Midas If you haven't done so, loosen each lug
bolt and retorque to the proper ft/lbs or lbs/ft (whichever) I
think 80-85 is recommended. Wiser minds will probably chime

Some shops will use torque bars on their impact wrenches that (I'm
told) apply proper torque to the lugs. Never trusted them and always
requested the good old manual torque wrench..

[MBZ] 1987 300D turbo timing chain replacement questions....

2006-05-18 Thread RICHARD FIne
I asked for a bid from my local Mercedes dealer (Yakima, WA) to replace the
timing chain in my 1987 300D turbo, 300K miles. The first response I got was
that it was not needed unless the timing chain was making lots of noise. I then
told him, that as far as I knew, I should replace it because of the high
mileage, that I didn't want to risk destroying the engine in case of failure.
I asked for an estimate, and after 3 or 4 phone calls and 2 days time, he
finally gave me one.
He then, changed his story, telling me because of my mileage, I needed to
change all the gears, sprocket, and related parts. The price of the parts was
going to be $1200, and the labor was going to be $800. He then went on to tell
me that all the years he had been with the dealership (he is the service
manager, and has been there a long time) he has only known of 2 or 3 such
replacements.
I told him, well, I guess I won't be needing the work done, as, I surely was

Thanks. As a follow-up, I wanted to ask the list: Does having the
traditional tap-on style wheel weights on the outside of your allow wheels
bother you at all? It really bothers me. I mean, you have this nice slick
alloy wheel with this crude weight tacked onto it. I notice this when I look
at a vehicle and I dislike it.

Years ago I had Discount Tire use tape-weights on my Cragar Drag Stars for
my old Dodge. They have not come off in over ten years. However these days,
every place I've asked about them has told me no, you shouldn't mess with
those.

Any cause of incomplete combustion is consistent with the low
compression (as carbon builds up in the rings). Check of valve
adjustment is essential before any compression check can have ANY
meaning. There is almost NO diagnostic value to notice that one cylinder
hammers as there can be almost a dozen possible causes off that. A
perfectly running engine with just a little fleck or two of loose carbon
rattling around can sound worse than an engine about to throw a rod.

Here are a couple of diagnostic tests to help you.

#1 Determine which cylinder is missing at idle by cracking open the injector
lines.
#2 Do your valve adjustment, look at cam to make sure lobes are good.
#3 Do compression check.
#4 Squirt ATF in cylinder then spin over to get excess out.
#5 do compression check again (ones that came up to normal will have
worn/stuck/carboned ring.
#6 If compression is low on missing cylinder and came up with oil, then swap
injectors with known good cylinder. Drive for a day or two and see if miss
moved, if so get a new injector.
#7 If after injector swap your miss is still with same cylinder and
compression is still low then you need a rebuild.

He's right, modulo the measured chain stretch also being OK. At that
mileage it's worth a check, especially since you know it hasn't been
checked in some time.

How's that car holding up? I remember seeing it when I picked up
your old 300D. (It's still slumbering in our back lot as a backup

of spare cars.)

I then told him, that as far as I knew, I should replace it because of
the high mileage, that I didn't want to risk destroying the engine in
case of failure.

It [stretch] an easy test, and worth doing. I had our SDL's chain
and tensioner done, at less miles than you're talking about, but it
_was_ making noise.

going to be $1200, and the labor was going to be $800. He then went on

Next time I'm doing my own, up 'til now I've hired it out. If only
the chain needs to be done, and not the other crap, it's supposedly
quite easy and no retiming is required.

Is there any valve work that I should also consider while doing this?

I don't think so. Vacuum pump maybe?

Anyone know of other good shops in the Yakima, Washington area that
I could trust working on my 300D?

Coeur d'Alene has one that I know has done a 603 chain or two.
I've personally taken him one 603 and two 117's to do.

[MBZ] 126 AC system

2006-05-18 Thread Jim Cathey

After recharging our SDL the compressor was definitely cycling when set
on MIN, even though the 52-degree vent temperatures aren't really that
low. It may be that the evaporator temperature sensor is a bit out of
whack, I've heard of this happening, but spot-checking it by getting a
real thermometer on there is not easy. Any thoughts out there?

Thats good to know Bill,

I had a ball joint and tierod end done not too long ago so hopefully tomorrow
dear wifey is going to get the car in for an alignment and saturday I'll get
some new sneakers on her.
Friday driving home in the rain as the puddles were first getting huge I
found out one tire (what I now belatedly realize is the ugliest one) had leaked
down to like 20psi. I found out because I hit a puddle and that tire wanted to
take a quick left turn... Pretty scary. Now with proper pressure its not so bad
but bad enough to replace 'em.

Curt - I had an occasional steering wobble on my SD - only felt it at
highway speeds with a mild left curve. Finally the tires stopped in
the
right spot so that I could see a flat spot developing. Changing the
tires
took care of it.

The account of the violence in Atenco is, to the best of my knowledge,
incomplete and innacurate. I have been following this issue, as I am
interested in the Zapatista movement.

What happened is that flower sellers were peddling their wares in the outdoor
market, and a large number of police showed up to evict them. This is
believed to be in large part because Walmart wants to build a superstore
there. The flower sellers resisted, and it was Mexican police with guns and
tear gas against peasant farmers with rocks and machetes; by the end of the
day there was at least one peasant farmer killed and 400 detained or in some
cases dissapeared. The citizens in the area joined in on the side of the
flower sellers, obstructing the police, barricading roads, etc, and it may be
at this point that police were beaten.

For what its worth, NAFTA and the spread of global industry is hitting Mexico
hard; it is common for industries to move in and tap into the water sources
which the local farmers depend on, effectively destroying the agrarian
economy. The destruction of the agrarian economy and consequent displacement
of the farmers is a major factor compelling the wave of immigration north of
the border.

President Fox is a buffoon and a sock puppet for US financial interests. He is
widely detested. Obrador offers hope of reform, but Marcos has been
conducting what he calls the other campaign, which is not about electoral
politics at all, but rather traveling throughout the rural areas, calling
together the people threatened by the invasion of multinational corporations,
etc and discussing what they can do directly to protect themselves, their
land, their water, their way of life.

I can't imagine why it is a bad idea. The only problem is that copper
sells for almost $4.00 a pound now, so the welding shops will probably
NOT give it away. The good clamps are about $10 for a set of two. You
will spend $20 on clamps and a bit on the wire. If you do not count your
labor, it will probably cost you more than $30. You can buy a GOOD set
of 20' 2/0 cables for $40. OTOH if you have all the parts free, it makes
sense.

Welding cable, plugs, and sockets are what I used in my big

good at handling vibration, too.

I suppose the stricture against _used_ welding cable is that
the insulation may be dangerously frayed. I think, however,

All,

While welding cable is good because it is flexible, and usually 00 or
bigger, I have read that it is not ideal for 12V DC use because the strands are

very fine and DC current travels down the core of the wire. IE: larger
diameter strands are better, within reason, as too few strands will affect
flexibility. Before someone asks, most arc welders are AC, though some have
DC and DC
reverse options. With AC, current travels down the surface of each strand,
making multiple strand cables lower in resistance.

I have owned a set of Sears 20 foot 2/0 cables for many years. They never
get hot and they jump my diesels without fail. They still sell them for about
$40 and you can catch them on a half price sale once in a while. The extra
length comes in handy if the cars are parked front to back, which is much
safer along the roadside.

You're correct about the skin effect of AC. DC will travel down the
entire wire; it doesn't really care whether the strands are fine or
thick, so I think the cables will work fine as jumper cables, assuming
they're all copper.

High voltage power lines often take advantage of the skin effect by
using a steel core. Steel is strong, but a relatively poor conductor.
Because of skin effect, though, the AC current flows mostly through the
outer part of the wire, which is usually aluminum, and the steel serves
only a a structural support.

material did not go far enough back to
tell them the proper torque specs. They took an educated guess and begged me to
come back in a day or two so they
could check them. I checked myself and did not worry about it after that.

[MBZ] Engine numbers

2006-05-18 Thread Zoltan Finks

I'm looking at the manual on CD, and I'm trying to figure out how to relate
the engine number that I see on my engine block to the numbers that they
provide in the PDFs - for example, the PDF has numbers such as: engine
numbers: 601, 602, 603

My entire enginge number is 616 912 102 681 24

I don't see 601, 602, 603 in my engine number.

Then the numbers in the PDF don't apply to your engine.

Uh, negative on the Mobil 1, but it's well known in the auto trade that the
Michelin tires sold through discount outlets (Wal Mart, in Canada also
Canadian Tire) are produced offshore in the Third World.

In the case of Michelin, I know at one time the tires they sold to the
discounter market even carried different model designations (for example,
the X-One was called the X when bought through Costco). Not sure if that is
still true, but if you are comparison shopping check that the entire model
name AND the treadwear and load rating specs are the same.

BTW, this is also happening here in Canada with Bosch parts sold through
Crappy Tire stores (mostly starters and alternators). You are in for a
surprise when you try to pull one and get core or warranty for it, from an
actual Bosch dealer. Bosch won't accept them back as cores or warranty them.

Of course, you KNOW that the current joke among German mechanics is: What
does 'Bosch-Germany' labelled on a part mean? Answer: 'Made in India'. LoL.

current travels down the surface of each strand, making multiple
 strand cables lower in resistance.

The skin depth (where the current is down to 37% of the value at the
surface) of AC current at 60 Hz is something like 0.375 - 0.5 INCH, so
unless your wire is 0.75 - 1.0 inch, you won't really have a problem with
line frequency AC on the wire. The smaller strands in welding cable are
for flexibility. (Now in the megahertz region, there is Litz wire for just
this problem, but at those frequencies the skin depth is MUCH less.)

Welding cables (with good insulation) will work just fine for jumper
cables.

Re: [MBZ] Tire Purchase

2006-05-18 Thread Levi Smith

I think they key thing is that are different models of tires.
Michelin is a brand name. Just cause they make a really great tire,
doesn't mean they don't make some really crappy ones as well.

I don't exactly consider B.F. Goodrich to be my favorite tires, but I'd
consider them a good name. However, my 83' 300D came with a set that the
guy got at Sam's. At least two of them have had bubbles in the sidewalls
since I got them. I pretty well view them as crap tires.

The difference is:
Wal-mart sells CHEAP TIRES.
Tirerack sells GOOD TIRES CHEAP...

Not to say you couldn't find a crap tire at Tirerack, or a good tire at
Wal-mart. But personally, I buy what I can look on tirerack and see good
reviews for both from tirerack and other customers, and then take it to
Wal-mart or whereever to have it mounted and balanced.
And every time I've checked so far, it's still been cheaper than just
getting whatever no-name brand crap tire that Wal-mart had and having them
mount and balance it...

Personally, I haven't looked up the exact specs, but for the size that was
previously listed where Michelin's were got at Wal-mart for $165, I would
have just paid $85 for Kumho's from Tirerack and had Wally world mount
them. I've had great luck with the Kumho's I've gotten so far... (I don't
know what model the michelin's were, but tirerack did have a michelin in
that size that was $160...)

Re: [MBZ] The wave

2006-05-18 Thread Levi Smith

Well, if it's warm out, I'm quite possibly in shorts and a t-shirt.
I didn't spend all the money for real protection with some sort of armour
in it, so in my mind, if the bike goes down, I'm doubting that pair of jeans
are going to make a whole heck of a lot of difference. Maybe I'll have an
extra 10th of a second before the jeans rip and wear off against the
pavement...

Don't get me wrong, I'll fully agree that real protection is the way to go.
But I don't want to spend more than my bike cost (about $600) for something
that would really protect me, and the time and pain to put it all on and off
for a 15 minute ride, or just the trip to work...

Heck, I'm riding my electric bicycle about 6+ miles each way to and from
work, and on the one steep hill where I'm holding both brakes to keep it
around 30mph max, I'm thinking how a helmet probably would be a good idea,
since falling off a bicycle at 30mph is probably going to hurt about as much
as falling off a motorcycle at that speed...

Re: [MBZ] Tire Purchase

2006-05-18 Thread Steve MacSween
My my, counsellor, would this be a good time to suggest you switch to decaf
;-)?

If you want to find out about something in the auto trade, then I'd suggest
you sit around and chew the fat with people who work there. That would be a
good start. Or have close friends in it who share information. Or all of the
preceeding, including having worked in it, as I did.

Tire Rack and Discount Tire Online are volume sellers who operate via the
Net with low overheads, but they are TIRE DEALERS.

DISCOUNT OUTLETS would include WallyMart, K-mart, Costco. They sell tires. I
would not define them as tire dealers, any more than a supermarket with a
big aisle of vitamins and toothpaste qualifies as a pharmacy.

What I have said about tires applies to many items sold through discount
outlets. That is why you MAY find you have trouble if you comparison-shop
SOME things (e.g., small appliances) between, say, JC Penney and, say
WallyMart, when you try to match up actual model numbers on products.

Some manufacturers produce model variations solely for sale through
WallyMart or other discounters. In the case of WM I would not suggest that
this has any quality implications, as WM is tough on suppliers.

As to whether Michelin has a different warranty, I have no idea, however one
point to check would be if Michelins bought at (for example) Costco are
covered at all Michelin dealers, or just through Costco outlets.

2006-05-18 Thread Desert Rat

Agree 100 percent Levi,

Point is Michelin doesn't make a XXX tire for everone but Wallyworld
and then let Wallyworld sell a XXX tire which is inferior to others.
Just not going to happen.

Bought Kuhmo's recently from Tirerack mounted and balanced and then
drop shipped to my Indie. Great tire and great deal. No complaints at
all, for the money anyway.

On 5/18/06, Levi Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

2006-05-18 Thread Smith, Todd
Hello Levi,

I really like Tire Rack but I find that in West Virginia that shipping to my
local indy eats up the cost saving and that the similar tire from Wal-Mart is
cheaper counting 6% sales tax. The last couple of sets I ordered from Tire
Rack were well over comparable tires at Wal-Mart. The big difference for me is
selections since I can get any tire that I want from Tire Rack and only a few
from anywhere else.

I didn't spend all the money for real protection with some sort of armour

Including a bit of Phoenix ashpalt still embedded in my hand after 30+
 years.

[MBZ] I wanted AquaTread 3s but

2006-05-18 Thread John Berryman

I bought these instead.

I'll let y'all know what I think of them after some miles.

I personally never heard much about Falken Tires, so I asked around
and got good feedback from a few friends in the auto repair biz and
someone from this forum also claimed that they liked them. Good
consumer reports.
I have found that 201s are more prone to hydroplaning than larger
heavier MBs and the new Bridgestone BT70s tires I put on in December
are plum wore out. I guess I did a little driving since then.
I never loved those tires and they were terrible in the wet, worse
in snow. I bought them at the only place that could supply, mount and
balance the tires on the only day I could take the time to have it
done. I hope the new tires give me what I want.

Re: [MBZ] Engine numbers

2006-05-18 Thread Jim Cathey

provide in the PDFs - for example, the PDF has numbers such as: engine
numbers: 601, 602, 603

My entire engine number is 616 912 102 681 24

I don't see 601, 602, 603 in my engine number.

Because you have the venerable iron-headed 616 4-cylinder engine. The
617
is the 5-cylinder version, and the 617A is turbocharged. The 60X
engines
are the newer aluminum-headed ones. The 615 is the 2.0 or 2.2 liter
engine
in the old series, and there are even older ones in the 621 and 636
series.

[MBZ] update on my 2.5 turbo

2006-05-18 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Im still not sure if it has a blown head gasket or just delivery valves.
After getting it good and warmed up it seems it idle worse than when
cold. Also, the oil pressure will drop WAY down at idle and not hit 3
till about 2k or so. The oil level is REAL high, not sure why. I
suppose its possible its diluted with fuel or something. Anyway, oil
change should help that. Now going to need to find some info on the
delivery valves.
