"Ban Chicago"

Chicago kills more kids some weekends than were lost at the FL high

Knives kill more kids than guns

"Ban Bathtubs"
Bathtubs are one of the leading killers in the USA.

Re: [MBZ] I’m in love

2018-02-22 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
In Japan, that is a BIG tractor. Here, it is a tiny tractor. Yanmar
and satoh (and kubota) are pretty well made. Unfortunately, the kubota
is 95% 'merkinized, with lotsa advertising and marketing overhead. (and
prices reflecting that) Yanmars are now almost all painted green, also
with big advertising and marketing overhead. Satoh seems to have
disappeared. I's love to have a real little Japanese tractor, with the
plates still in Japanese, not one made for the "merkun market with 3
point hitch to use as a garden tractor (not a lawnmower)

Some of the IH and MF diesel garden tractors from the 70s are great
little japanese tractors, but a lot of them don't have 3 pt hitch or
PTO. Once in a while I see a little kubota garden tractor for sale,
but most of the sellers want silly money. Most of the used "garden
tractors" for sale now, are not; They are just glorified lawnmowers.
If you really want a lawnmower, the zero turns are best, or the really
old one like Curt has is good.

A little 10-15 hp japanese 2 cyl diesel garden tractor with a tiller,
disk, harrow and planter makes gardening for a family easy. The 3 pt
bushhog is a good thing too, especially if you don't have a 40 to 125
HP tractor to do that stuff.

If I were looking for something more recent, I'd look at Mahindra.
Mahindra is the former International Harvester India. Their 15-40 hp
tractors have much in common with the old IH A, B, C, H and M tractors,
with quite a few parts still interchangeable.

I ran a 45 HP kubota pulling a PTO air sprayer for a day. The fan alone
takes 45 HP at the PTO, so the poor thing was overworked. I ran the
engine full bore all the time and drove it with the hydrostatic trans
lever and the brakes and steering wheel. For being so underpowered (30
GPM pump takes another 10-15 HP, plus a couple HP to move all the weight
over the ground) I was impressed with how well it did. On a downhill
run I could get full RPM on everything, on the level it was maybe 90-95%
rpm, and doing uphill, because it was a Diesel, it was maybe 80% rpm. '

Most of the time we ran that sprayer with a 1530 JD that was also
underpowered (45 HP) but most of the time we could keep the fan speed at
100% with the JD. I pulled the same sprayer with a MF 275 one year (75
HP and it was great, except for going downhill was scary. It had the
equivalent of a TA, so the tractor would run away going downhill, unless
you could hold it back with the brakes. (No engine braking) Most of
the time I kept under a half tank for the hilly part, and if you
remember to do it before starting downhill, there was a lever to lock
the TA, so you would have engine braking. One time the ground was
really wet and I remembered to lock up the TA. I started down the hill,
and the engine was braking. Then the RR tire started spinning in
reverse due to the open differential as we peeled off the sod and slid
downhill. I was really busy trying to make sure the thing did not
jackknife and roll the tractor. To keep it from jackknifing and
rolling, I finally quit trying to hold it back, pushed the clutch and
let the whole thing run away to the bottom of the hill, where I was able
to get control again. That was a scarier ride than when I rolled a
tractor.

The next year I pulled the same sprayer with the yanmar (JD 5500) (80
HP, with MFD). It was a much lighter tractor with much smaller tires,
and in place of being 7 ft wide, it was barely over 4' at 50" wide. I
was amazed at how it pulled the sprayer uphill and down in conditions so
squishy that the tires pushed the sod down 4", but never broke the sod
like the MF did. It was a wonderful tractor. It took half the fuel of
either the MF or the JD 1530. With $5.50/gal fuel, I really appreciated
that fuel economy. The MFD was a pain at row ends, because it would
not turn tight enough to turn into the next row, so I had to turn
partway, then back up and go at the turn again to get into the next
row. That wasted a lot of time, but all in all the benefits outweighed
the pain of not being able to turn tight enough. In some blocks, I
could develop a pattern of skip a row or 2, then pick up the skipped
rows by skipping 3 or 2 at the other end.

can be realized in modern designs but not everything is stupid-proof.
Here is a life principle illustrated in military pilot actions - quite

A buddy replaced a sump pump the other day. It seems to cycle very
short - 2 seconds "on" seems short. The "off" time was very short
when first replaced since there was lotsa frozen water that was in

seconds for the "on" cycle seems unusually short. For the past 30

[MBZ] I’m in love

2018-02-22 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I have a friend who had this little 12 acre horse farm sort of place. I keep
some of the projects there, Max has his bits there in the barn too.

She has let the place go, and little pine trees have sprouted up over a lot of
it. I’ve been mowing it to keep the grass down but the pine trees are taking
over.

So this other friend of ours says he has a little tractor with a bush hog I
could borrow to cut this stuff down. Turns out it is a little 2cyl Yanmar
diesel tractor, 4WD, paddle tires, low/high 3pd, 3spd PTO, maybe 4ft bush hog.
It’s the real deal, just a basic solid well made blunt instrument. This thing
is a total beast. It is unstoppable. It could probably climb right up a wall.

Yesterday I cut about an acre of these pine trees and other scrub that were
growing around the house. 3 low, 2300rpm, PTO in 2, the thing just slogged on
and on cutting pine trees up to about 2in dia maybe 6-8ft tall. In 2 hours it
burned about a gallon or gallon and a half of fuel. It mulched up almost
everything, not much chunks of anything left. I was amazed at what it did. The
blade has tremendous inertia like a big flywheel, a solid bar with flying
blades on the end, very sharp.

Another acre or so of stuff to cut, it gets boring but this little tractor is
great fun.

My buddy has been trying to find a little bucket loader/forks for it but they
are very hard to find and pricey. I thought maybe he could find one in Japan
and ship it over. I guess that would be pricey too. I feel like I want to go
there and buy one, I am totally in love with this thing.

Love hurts!

Re: [MBZ] Good idea or will it kill

2018-02-22 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Yes, current aircraft are for the most part no different than they were 70
years ago. There are slow, minor improvements coming in instrumentation and
engine management that might bring us up to 1970's cars -
FAA regulation is largely to blame - keeping the public safe from anything
that hasn't been put through the approval cycle that adds MUCH money to the
costs of anything new.
Dealing with navigation, air traffic control, weather, and avoiding other
traffic can be a full time job, then add flying the airplane on top of that
- autopilots do most ot the later, allowing the pilot to focus on the first
items. Aircraft are often times traveling 2 to 4 times faster than a car .
. .
I love the results of the new ADS-B system - I can see other aircraft on
the screen LONG before I can visually locate them. It makes me feel
(perhaps wrongly?) much more secure in busy airspace (training areas around
airports, etc) - so improvement is coming, slowly.

So far, while everything is still working as new, the "smart assistance"
features in the Subaru are better than I am - telling me I'm getting close
to the lane lines, coming up on a car or other object too fast, etc. I
haven't let it try to keep me in the lane yet - it just yells at me if I'm
too close to the edge.

No, I'm not ready for a self-driving car, but I can see it coming. Of
course, the hackers will have a grand time with them, as very few of these
companies have any idea about security, and the parts will come from China
- who has a vested interest in hacking all things elsewhere.

But the trains are run by computers already. The big board know and controls
all. The guy in the engine is watching things, and trying to intercede if
things go tragically wrong. The Empire Builder train (skAmtrak) had a
repeating failure when it pulls into Spokane around Midnight. The train is
split, with the scenic cars going to PDX. SEA is the front of the old train.
When the cars split, the onboard computer craps itself and refuses to reboot,
sometimes for hours on end.

Imagine what happens when your car poots a sprocket while zipping along the

Which is pretty much why private aircraft have made so few advancements in the
last seventy years. Perhaps Ipads have replaced steam gauges, but to my
understanding, that's about it. ‎Perhaps one of our private pilots can chime in
on that. As far as autonomous vehicles, before that becomes a reality,
Shakespeare's Henry Vl , Part 2, Act lV, Scene 2 will have to become a reality.

happens when the sensors get dirty? My truck has a backup camera which
is a wonderful device but sometimes (like right now) it is so dirty as

Aircraft have been flying along on autopilot for a long while but
professional people who are well trained to react in an emergency are at
the controls ready to do their best to remedy any problem that may
arise. If problems do arise, there is a fair bit of room to manoeuvre up
there. Not so much on a 2 lane highway where one is only a few feet away
from the truck going the other direction. We know people will not
concentrate on the task of driving if the car is on autopilot. They
don't do so good now. They text etc when they should be paying
attention, so we cannot rely upon a "driver" in a driverless car to be
ready to take over if the electronics are not doing a good job of it. We
have already had the case of the Tesla owner who got himself killed by
not paying attention to what the car was doing.

Re: [MBZ] CL idiot

2018-02-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
The demographics for our group cut across a wide swath of socioeconomics. You
would see people asking for clothing and stuff on a regular basis, but I had to
put a stop to a lot of it, mainly because people would not make specific
requests. If you’re not familiar with FreeCycle, one of the tenets is to ask
for specific items, not make a general request for something like “household
goods” or “anything you can spare”. This ends up having people try and turn
the place into a charity, which is not the intent.

It was clear there were some who would try to get things just to resell them,
which is also a no-no. Same thing with pets. Most groups ban the FreeCycling
of animals for this reason. Our group did the same, after a member was caught
trying to sell puppies they had gotten (for free) from another member.
