[MBZ] Nokia screwed

2018-05-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Some of y'all may remember I put nokia Entyre 2.0 on the dogde last
oct. Over the weekend, one of them went flat. Seems if got a screw
in it too close to the sidewall to be repaired. So, I am out $100 plus
mounting for a new tar. Other than that, the first 5k miles or so has
been ok.

Meanwhile, I put some green slime in it and it is holding. I may just
move it to the rear, and put the new one on the front when it comes in.
It will be interesting to see if it makes 60-80k miles or not

[MBZ] Steering column boot Wuz: 240D window seals.

2018-05-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
yeah, my 240D needs a new boot on the steering column. That must be
where the water came in while driving through torrential rain.

I am guessing the easiest way it to unbolt the steering gear from the
frame, then unhook the flexible coupling to the steering column, then
change the boot.

Anyone done that before? Is there a better way?

I am not familiar with RedHat ways...

Try "ip link show", or "ifconfig -a"

That should show all the interfaces that the system knows about.
On Debian, the Wi-Fi will be listed as "wlan0", "wlan1" and the
wired "eth0", "eth1", etc.

If it's not listed, then it is probably missing the needed kernel
module.

If it is listed, then the tools I'm familiar with are iwlist,
iwconfig, wpa_supplicant, ifconfig (been replaced by "ip" in
systemd).

ifconfig wlan0 up

iwlist wlan0 scan

iwconfig wlan0 essid "My WiFi" mode managed

ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.1
   or
dhclient -v wlan0

There are GUI tools, but I can't give advise on any of them...

[MBZ] SLK

2018-05-17 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I looked at this SLK and it’s pretty nice and probably realistically priced. If
I was excited for a summer toy I’d buy it. Looks well maintained though no
records, belonged to the guy’s FIL who gave it to him when he left the area a
few months ago. Guy has no real interest in it and with the stick his wife
can’t drive it. It would be a pretty fun ride though, strong runner.

If anyone wants another toy let me know. He has a coupla other lookers coming.

Re: [MBZ] Here's a good solution to excess disposable income

2018-05-17 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Yep. Archer Road and 39th were two lane country roads. The landing strip at
Stengel Field extended from near the intersection on back into woods, and the
hanger was near Archer Road, further to the west, and bordered by a trailer
park.

Having moved to Gainesville when it was a small cracker town with nearly all
the stores clustered around the courthouse, it seems unbelievable that it has
become what it is today. America changes so fast, I guess you can't go back; at
least in Florida.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Activating wireless service on CentOS 7 / MATE

2018-05-17 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Though, I gotta ask, why CEntOS? Are you running it in an Enterprise /
Production environment? I mean, if you are that's great. Red Hat work pays
for my bacon. But otherwise, the stability comes at the cost of newer
technologies that most home / laptop users would want. Fedora / Ubuntu
would be a better choice from that perspective.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (RHEL7 / CEntOS7) has a very good WiFi
interface. As long as you installed the appropriate packages, it should
recognize the wireless nic and ask you to walk through setup.

Any suggestions on how I do that?

OK_I thought that was just non 240D's. I thought 240D's had steel wheels
all the way through.
I have an extra set of Bundts in my cellar, Guess I will bring them to the

IIRC poor Rich can't get the darn car to run, so all this debate about the

the fuel tank filter (screen) if he has not already done so.

OK good points.  I absolutely don't need another car, but if it would be
worth something as a flip I could do that, but it probably doesn't have
much upside at even $3k.  I guess it would be fun but fun is not in my
future at the moment car-wise so I guess I will take a look at it and
see what is going on with it, just be a tire-kicker.

Speaking of tires, I took the old set of wheels/tires off the E300 to
the shop to get the new Kumhos mounted, I bought a new wheel at the
junkyard that had a good Michelin on it, told the kid I wanted the tire
for a spare, he says sure.  Some $ in it.  Go to pick up the new mounted
tires, no old tire to be found.  Guy said they would look for it, get
back to me.  No call since Saturday so I called and whatever guy I
talked to was quite evasive about it.    So now I have to argue with
them if they don't find it. Why do simple things have to be so hard?

The resale values on these is right about where it’s priced. Certainly many
folks price them higher, but with the miles this one has the price is pretty
much in the ballpark.

If you can get it for $3k it’s not a bad deal. Even at that price you would be
hard pressed to flip and make a profit.

If it had mileage more common for these, typically below 125k, it would
probably command between $4k-$5k because it’s a stick.

Otherwise, these are pretty simple and fairly reliable cars for the vintage.
Interior plastics are their Achilles heel, as they break down and peel rather
badly. Not tough to fix, but cosmetically sucky. The sticks are pretty fun to
drive. I’ve been looking for one to try and entice the wife out of her SL500
for economics. It’s a great car and I’m not parting with it, but the way she
drives it the overhead is a killer.

[MBZ] OT: Activating wireless service on CentOS 7 / MATE

2018-05-17 Thread Craig via Mercedes
So I finally put CentOS 7 on our laptop and then added MATE for a
graphical user interface.

I have been using it with a hardwired Internet connection, but I now need
to get it working with a wireless connection.

Any suggestions on how I do that?

Thanks,

Craig

Re: [MBZ] the cabin interior headliner has been removed and a dolphin painted in its place

2018-05-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Don’t buy this as a flip, you’ll never recover your costs.

There was once a flying club near the University of Florida at a small field.

One day a ministerial student cracked the throttle from wide open instead of
idle, the plane started rolling, and he grabbed the end of a wing as it went by
and hung on. The plane made a full circle and ran into the side of the hangar.
The plane wasn't heavily damaged, and the student wasn't hurt, but the members
bought out his share of the flying club and suggested he take up another

The 40 hp J-3 was an interesting plane. In a strong headwind you could almost
take off straight up. If you were flying to another town, you had better not go
if you had a strong headwind. You could run out of fuel or daylight before you
got there. That might have been because the engine wasn't in the best condition.
An auto mechanic down the road did the maintainence and rebuilds and the A and
E at the city airport signed off on them. That was back around 1960.

Re: [MBZ] E300td oel and EGR?

2018-05-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
That’s a function of the detergents, I believe. Using that logic, wouldn’t it
make sense to have fresher oil in the engine to get the most benefit from the
additives?

I’ve only had one car in my life that showed a noticeable difference from
running synthetic oil in it, and I’m not totally convinced it was the reason
why the lifters quieted down, as part of the problem was a few bad oil tubes.
In fact, running synthetic in my 400E has caused the thing to leak like a
sieve. I’m going to change it back to high mileage Dino juice to (hopefully)
get the seals to swell up.

Again, I’m no maniac about oil types. I use both. In some cars I do it based
on manufacturer’s recommendations, in others, fiscal concerns.

Re: [MBZ] E300td oel and EGR?

2018-05-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Mobil1 averages about $26/5 quarts. I can buy 2-1/2 gallons of Delo 400 LE for
$26.00, which makes it about $2.60/quart, or half the price of Mobil1. I’m not
sure where you’re buying filters for $8.00, I’m paying around $10.00 for Mann
or Hengst.

So a five quart oil change is actually under $25.00.

If you’re doing oil analysis properly, and as someone who did oil analysis on
literally thousands of diesel industrial engines from maybe 50 to 2500 HP for
many years, you’re sampling on a regular basis, let’s say twice a year. That’s
what, $40-$50?

So if you sample and use M1, you’re spending roughly $75/year with a single oil
change based on 10k/miles/year. If I change twice a year based on time or
interval (5k intervals) with no sampling, I’m spending $50.

So I’m running fresher oil for $25 less a year. As I stated previously, if
Mobil1 wasn’t a group 3 base stock I would go that route. However, since they
downgraded the product I don’t see a lot of value in using it over more
frequent changes using Dino oil.

To each his/her own, of course. That’s just my take on it.

Can I see the breakdown of costs please? I don't believe I pay $70 for a change
with M1. $30/gallon on sale, $8 for a filter...

LE is cheap.  I can do a complete change with Delo 400 LE on the 95 E300D for
under $35 every 5000 miles and not have concerns.  If I used Mobil1 it would be
near twice the cost.  Since Mobil1 is a group 3 base stock it’s not that much
better than conventional dino juice in my opinion.

Oh yeah, if I drop another $20 on oil analysis I’ve driven my costs up even
more.

Re: [MBZ] E300td oel and EGR?

2018-05-17 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You have to get the oil tested to be sure but I see no reason why not. I change
at 10,000 on both the Golf and Jetta as analysis shows both happy in that and
it's about one change a year. When I was driving a lot more it was twice a
year. I took a 190D up to 12,000 with no problem from the analysis, as Don says
15k is probably fine too but 10k fit my schedule better.
