Re: [MBZ] Initial thoughts of 240D was Re: Instrument cluster Fuse?

2021-01-24 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
You need to develop a "feel" for how much adjustment is needed to change the
gap by a thousandth or two. You can only measure the gap with the jam nut
tight so it's: measure, loosen, tweak, tighten, and measure again; then
repeat until it's in spec. After a the first few valves you should be able
to "nail" each adjustment in two or three tries. Don't over-tighten the jam
nuts. The cam lobe should point directly away from the rocker contact point
(not exactly vertically down). I have always been able to turn the engine
with a wrench on the power steering pump pulley nut, easier than turning at
the crank, IMO. Turn ONLY in the direction of normal engine rotation.
While the valve cover is off, measure chain stretch (several times) by
aligning the marks on the cam tower and then reading the angle off the
crankshaft pulley. You might need to clean the crank pulley up first if
it's gunky. Replace the valve cover gasket if stiff or condition unknown.
Don't overtighten the valve cover fasteners. I always use a piece of paper
(actually a picture copied from the manual) to keep track of the valves
(and final gap values) as I adjust them. I always wear gloves when working
on a Diesel engines because the soot (in oil) is hard to remove from bare
hands and gloves give me a better grip. I buy Nitrile gloves at Harbor
Freight by the box of 100. The special bent wrenches are a bit faster but
regular wrenches will work. It seems there are always one or two valves
that try my patience.

I've never done them on a 240D. For the OM617, I bought a pair of cheap
wrenches and bent them like the "special" ones. Definitely helpful. But yes
it's not a bad DIY job, though I'd suggest gloves as you'll get some black
oil on your hands. Also replace the gasket on the valve cover. It's a good
idea regardless, but especially if it's old it won't seal up well again.

What Curt said - -
I set the valves every spring and fall on the OM615, 616, and 617 engines.
I never bent the wrenches, just used them straight, though I can see that
it would have been a bit easier if I had. Of course, I had been setting
valves on VW's for years before that, as well as MGs, Triumphs, etc.

standard across manufacturers? My tire shop has a little poster about

Valves are absolutely something you can do yourself on a 240D. I've only done
them once but I was struck by 2 things:
1. It was much easier than I expected. I planned on 2 hours, I think it took 1
and it would go faster the more I did it.2. The car started and ran MUCH better
and quieter after the adjustment.
I don't like having people do valves because they're supposed to be set dead
cold and I don't think most mechanics do that. I can plan to leave the car
overnight so its ready for me to set them the next day.
You only need a set of feeler gauges, a reasonable set of wrenches and a
screwdriver. $20-$30 at Harbor Freight would get you all the tools. I know they
sell special wrenches but I don't think they're needed on a 240D.
Which reminds me I should look into setting the valves on the ASV. Nobody knows
how long its been since thats been done. I've got 30 or so hours on the
machine. The last guy probably had 100, its been like 6-8 years...

Ok. Good thoughts. I’ll start with the linkage to see anything obvious.

In terms of maintenance, I figured I would start with stuff I can do like Fuel
filters. I have a diesel purge kit too.

I am thinking I should probably have the valves adjusted/checked.  I noticed
when it starts up, it runs a little rough until I give it more fuel. It smooths
out.  It also has quite a bit of whitish gray smoke. My old worn out 82 300D
with 400K miles would blow out black smoke.

I’m wondering about the glow plugs too.  Isn’t there a way to check them with a
multimeter?  I remember changing the plugs on my 617. I thought I would start
with the hardest one. It turned out the one right in the middle was the
hardest. With rough running and white smoke and low power, couldn’t that be a
bad glow plug?

A little hard to start and white smoke could be a glow plug. Or leaky valves.
Anything that keeps the temperatures in one or more cylinders down below
ignition temperature when the fuel is squirted in. Clouds of unburned vaporized
fuel are white-ish, and smell like diesel. White smoke that smells like burned
antifreeze is, well, burned antifreeze.

Re: [MBZ] 240D purge

2021-01-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The gauge sender is often glommed up after years of crud in the tank. It’s an
easy fix that I’ve written up several times. You can do this with a pair of big
channelocks, you don’t have to have a 36mm socket.

Here’s the archive of it:

https://web.archive.org/web/20020311143203/http://www.mbz.org/info/articles/fuel_system/fuelsender.html

Ful text:

Tools Needed:
36mm Socket

8mm socket or wrench to remove seat back bolts Lots of clean shop towels or
rags.

Plenty of room around car for seat bottom and back to clear doors while
removing. Fuel tank as low as you dare to go with it.

Procedure:

1.) On a 126 and some 123 chassis cars: Remove rear seat bottom by releasing 2
red clips on forward bottom edge of seat frame. Pull to one side on the clips
while lifting up - you'll feel the seat frame come up as soon as they release.
Lift up on the forward part of the seat bottom and pull towards the front of
the car. Carefully remove seat bottom from car. On most 123 chassis cars the
sender can be accessed through the first aid kit box on the parcel shelf. Check
your car before yanking anything out!

2.) In the center of the seat back below the armrest is an 8mm screw. Remove
it. On either side at the lower corners of the seat back are metal brackets
with 8mm screws in them. Remove these as well. Climb into the center of the
back seat area and lift the seat back straight up. There's a metal lip on the
back of the seat that hooks on two "ridges" just below the parcel shelf. Lift
the seat back off of these and carefully set it down in the back of the car.
CAUTION: Use two people for the next step!!

3.) With another person's help lift the seat back and remove it from the car.
Why two people? Because if you try to do this yourself the seatback is too
heavy. You'll end up dragging one of the corner brackets across the top of the
wheel well or somewhere else around the door area. I have the scars to show for
it. Now is a good time to apply some Leatherique to the seat back and bottom
while you have the whole thing out.

4.) After wading through the spare change, candy, Cheetos, etc, you'll find
some black insulating/sound deadening material draped down the back of the
seating area. On the left rear (driver's side) there will be a cut-out just
below the parcel shelf. Carefully pull this portion back. underneath is a large
(3"-4") diameter plastic plug. Pry it out of the opening it seals.

5.) You are now looking at the top of the guage sender. Carefully remove the
electrical connector and move it out of the way. Place your socket on top of
the sender and turn it counterclockwise. Once unscrewed all the way, get ready
with some shop rags/towels.

6.) Carefully and SLOWLY lift the sender assembly out of the hole. As you lift,
fuel will be draining out of the cylinder. There are two holes in the side, one
near the top, another near the bottom, with still a third in the base. Look
down into the tank as you get close to the bottom of the sender or listen
carefully to tell when the fuel has stopped draining from the sender. Have some
towels or rags ready, as when you remove the sender from teh tank there will
still be fuel dripping from it. Be patient! Too many of us have pulled the
sender out prematurely and gotten baptized with #2 diesel. Yuck! Take the
sender to a clean work area where you can disassemble it and lay the parts out.

7.) Start by wiping the outside of the sender with a clean towel. You'll be
amazed at the nasty black stuff all over. get used to it -you're going to see
more . . . On the bottom of the cylinder is a small round "nut". Carefully
unscrew this with a pair of pliers and put it aside. Gently twist on the bottom
of the sender and it will start to come apart. Be prepared for more fuel!
Here's what you will find:

A.) Flat metal disc that covers the bottom of the plastic plate and acts as the
"floor" for the maze.

B.) Plastic disc that is the closure plate for the bottom. Lots of convoluted
grooves in it, like a little maze. Make sure these are cleaned out, as they act
as a damper for fuel to flow in and out of the sender cylinder.

C.) Outer tube of the sender. Two small holes in the side, both should be open
and unclogged. These allow fuel to flow in and out of the sender so the float
will register properly. The inside will be messy as well. Clean it. I pass
paper towels (or better yet, a non-fuzzy shop rag) through it.

D.) Sender float and guide rod/wires. Here's where the fun begins

8.) Clean all the individual pieces, saving the float/guide rod assembly for
last. You can use any number of solvents for this, just use them in accordance
with proper safety practices. My cleaner of choice is an electrical contact
cleaner.

9.) Take the float/guide rod assembly and carefully clean it, using a cotton
swab or something appropriate. Handle it carefully, as the fine copper wires on
the sides are very important as you will discover! On the bottom is a

Hard starting could be some tight valves.

White/blue smoke is unburned fuel, could be some injectors are still
dirty dispite the purge. Drive it for a few weeks with some more Italian
tuneups, Techron additive in the fuel. Check the air filter and intake
for any mouse nests or general filth etc.

Check throttle linkage for missing bushings and other looseness.

If the tank gauge is working normally otherwise, the reserve light could
maybe be a bad ground? The reserve light is always dimly on in my 300SD,
and I have not sorted out why.

Thats a pretty good price. I ought to consider a bucket to have at camp. I've
been running "Traveler" brand 15w40 in the 1952 Farmall Super M for some years

If I manage to find a backhoe I'll probably start using more of the stuff, all

New fuel filters and some diesel purge / Italian tune ups should be in your
future. On the flat a 4spd manual 240D should make 87.5mph. They don't strain,
they're governor limited, the engine just won't turn any faster.
Best fuel economy I ever turned in in something like 100,000 miles across 2x
240Ds was 32mpg, average was around 28 so it sounds like you're doing fine
there. A couple 0-60 runs should tell the tale, IIRC it should be around 20
seconds.

My '78 had an issue where the pedal wasn't moving the rack the whole way
reliably. I don't remember exactly but there are several linkages and ge-gaws
and whatnot. IIRC some people complain about the rubber joint right at the

caused it to only go to about 3/4 of the pedal. Once I fixed that it was much

I made it all the way home.  I stopped a couple times to take a break and tried
to figure out instrument cluster and fuse issue. Never did have luck.

Nothing flew off! Thankfully.  I do understand what others have said about how
slow these are. And yes, it takes some planning ahead.
It was good on flat stretches. I could maintain 70-73 mph. A few times, if
there was a pretty good hill I could get close to 80.  Having the new tires was
much better. I would have been nervous with old tires.

I had heard some people say that when these cars are at maximum speed they are
really straining.  It definitely didn’t feel that way to me. When I was getting
up to speed it definitely generates some RPMS, but once I shifted into 4th, it
seemed to just settle in. It’s not fast — at all.  But, once it’s in 4th and
cruising at 70 mph, it felt like it wasn’t straining.  It was like it was
saying, “ok, here we are at cruising speed. This is what you get. I can do this
all day, but I’m not pushing too hard.”

I had the pedal Floored for pretty much the whole time.  But, at 70 mph it
didn’t feel like it was working too hard.

I did check the mileage. I had to guess a little based on mileage traveled on
my GPS because the odometer quit.  My calculations are probably pretty close.
27.5 mpg.

DOP certification is quite stringent, I believe. Though not sure who

Funny that you mention cooking oil! The most recent EVOO I got from Costco
is Italian Olive Oil that has a DOP certification. The quality and flavor
is noticeably better than their previous oils. It has a distinctly
fresher, fruity, peppery flavor. I also notice that the Vinaigrette

Highly recommended!

GP's affect cold starting. Valves, when they first become too
tight, also only affect cold starting. (If they get tight enough
it'll affect running, and can result in burned valves.) GP's,
the parallel kind, should measure about 0.7 ohms when cold.
It's easy to do from the GP relay plug. You need a decent
meter that can reliably read sub-ohm values.

These are both good tests/adjustments to do on any new-to-you
vehicle. Also look for fuel leaks, dirty filters, etc.

The glow plugs only affect starting, then they turn off - they have no

I’m wondering about the glow plugs too. Isn’t there a way to check them with a

The Albatross' stop adjustment on the pump was way off. I looked at it and the
other two 300D engines that I had accessible to me, and made it look more like
those. Good enough at that point.

Bingo: throttle linkage issues are very common and rob power.  That would be

I agree, if you had it floored most of the time something is wrong. While
they’re not fast, they should easily get up to highway speed to the point
that you have to back off unless you encounter a steep hill. Keeping the
pedal down will bring you to 85-90mph pretty easily.

Start with linkage, and all the maintenance stuff of course

In a 240D, not too much to worry about with today's speed limits.

And pray the oil pressure gauge doesn't drop to zero.

Too bad about that Italian tune-up the car didn't get.

27.5 mpg.

After dropping that car off I headed to OKC to look at another 240D.

Was on CL listed as them having bought it from original owner, bad
transmission. I asked about rust and they said very little. When I get
there car is way more rusty that I planned on. Has some underbody rust, and
rust along the back of the rear windshield. Car fired right up immediately
and runs great, but does not go into gear. They said it was low on fluid,
who knows. I was really going to pass due to the rust. They were asking
$700, I offered $400 and we settled on $450. I will have to look at it
closer but I’m not sure if this will be a parts car or something to get
going and flip. Will get pics and you can decide. Back in the day it would
be a parts car, but now days not so sure.

[MBZ] crackish

2021-01-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

   Mercedes W123 (North America)

**1**3h**r**s** ·
Hi all, sadly I'm going to have to sell my old reliable 1980 240D as I'm
moving out of the country. Pictures and full details coming soon but for
now I just want to share this info in case there's someone in Northern
California looking for one. I'm in Oakland.
It's a medium (royal?) blue with light tan MB tex interior, 4 speed,
broken odometer so unknown mileage. It must be 250K+

Just done:
Center mount for the drive shaft, front and rear flex discs ($1300 job)
New wheel bearings, brake calipers, pads, rotors in front ($1900 job)
Recently done:
All four glow plugs.
Does not leak oil and runs great.
Paint is oxidized but could be buffed out.
A small rust spot at base of front passenger door.
Dash is cracked
A/C is installed but inop.
Heat works like a charm.
Headliner needs TLC as it is sagging at the rear.
Rear passenger side window needs regulator or some TLC.
Otherwise a good car that I would love to keep restoring and driving.
Anyone interested? I'm thinking about $5500. Thoughts?
Stay tuned for pics.

Re: [MBZ] Instrument cluster Fuse?

2021-01-24 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
As mentioned, it's the rheostat. You can wiggle it back and forth
carefully for several minutes and you might get lucky and get the lights to
come on a bit. The real fix is to take it apart and clean the contacts
well. If the resistive coil inside has come out of its place in the
ceramic body, then there isn't much hope to fit it.

Good news is they're available new from Mercedes again. I just bought one.
