Didn't someone (Curt?) say tht HF wire was no good and we must buy good wire
from a regular welding supply dealer?
Also, he should be sure pants legs go down over shoe or boot tops. A drop of
liquid steel down in the shoe is a common event that can cause wild dancing and
serious burns. Don't ask me how I know.

[MBZ] Dumb trick.

2015-05-24 Thread Gerry Archer via Mercedes

When I found it took a very long shop jack to reach the front lift point on the
Prius,
I bought a pair of ramps instead, centered them on the front wheels, drove up
on the ramps, put on the emergency brake, and then decided to move the car
further back in the shop.

When I had backed half way down the ramps with the emergency brake dragging,
both ramps shot out from under the wheels, knocking the woodworking bench down,
and kicking out one leg on the general purpose bench.
I sat there for a minute trying to figure out why the ramps kicked out with
such force, and then it dawned on me: Front wheel drive car after 40+ years of
working on rear wheel drive cars!
Fortunately there was was no significant damage.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Having a very bad day leads to a product recall

2015-05-21 Thread Gerry Archer via Mercedes

I just checked the telephone book for this relatively small county and found
that there are 32 pages of lawyers and only 21 pages of physicians and
surgeons. The U.S. still has a free market for small businesses, so public
demand dictates the number and type of lawyers who go in business for
themselves. If the public was not willing to pay for the services of these
local lawyers whom they obviously consider a necessity, there would not be 32
pages of them listed in the phone book.
When Joseph Stalin took over the USSR, one of the first things he did was send
the Russian lawyers to Siberia, and we all know what happened to the USSR.
Lawyers are a huge contributor to domestic peace in Western nations. In the
past we might have shot our neighbor during a dispute, but now we hire a lawyer
and sue him.
Lawyers are obviously a very necessary component of Western civilization.

Re: [MBZ] [PhilosophicalM] FW: Gates vs Ford Motors

2013-12-02 Thread Gerry Archer

Windows vs. Ford Motor Co.

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way
computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the
computer industry with the auto industry and stated, If Ford had kept up
with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25
cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon. In response to Bill's comments,
Ford issued a press release stating: If Ford had developed technology like
Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash.twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a
new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for noreason. You would
have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the
car, restart it, andreopen the windows before you could continue. For some
reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turnwould cause your
car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to
reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable,
five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five
percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator, warning lights would all be
replaced by a single This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation warning
light.

7. The airbag system would ask, Are you sure? “before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and
refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned
the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to
drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same
manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the Start button to turn the engine off.

When all else fails, you could call customer service in some foreign
country and be instructed in some foreign language how to fix your car
yourself!

Don Marquis, a popular journalist / author of many years ago, wouldn't use
capitalization / punctuation either. One of his editors insisted he use
them, so Marquis sent him a half dozen pages of single spaced punctuation
and capitalized letters and told him to insert them wherever he saw fit.

While driving to church Sunday morning, I noticed that the hood star on
our 1982 240D/3.0 was crooked. When we got to church, I got out and tried
to straighten it. Eventhough it had snowed and was in the mid-20s, I did
not think of ice. When I tried to move it, the star broke off in my hand.

So, Kaleb, do you have a W123 hood star? If so, how much?

[MBZ] iPad Air catches fire; fire department called.

2013-11-23 Thread Gerry Archer

Apple fanbois around the world are on red alert after one of the latest
fruity fondleslabs caught fire and exploded in an Australian Vodafone shop.

A demonstration model of the new iPad Air caused a fire so intense that the
fire brigade were called.

Although no-one was hurt in the fire, fanbois around the world will be
sleeping a little less easily tonight.
A photograph obtained by the Daily Mail shows Apple's hottest (sorry)
fondleslab looking like it had been baked in a dirty oven.
The newspaper quoted a Vodafone spokesman who saw a burst of flames shoot
out of the iPad's charging port.
An Apple iApparatchik was straight on the scene to work out why the Air had
caught fire.
There have been several examples of iPhones and dodgy Chinese chargers going
pop, but this is believed to be the first time an iPad has ignited.

If I were in Craigs position I would vounteer as a physics, chemistry, or

I would be sure and include that prominently on my CV in further

the high school prominently displayed and the application titled: UPDATED

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that Craig has had no recent
experience teaching high school students physics, and that
applicants who have are the ones who got the jobs for which Craig applied.
At a small college Craig would very likely be teaching students who are less
than one year out of high school, so the teachers aid experience could be
very valuable to him after he finds such a job.

[MBZ] mete8y4u Pilot Error

2013-11-20 Thread Gerry Archer

Russian crash investigators find voice recorder

The last word the pilot of the Boeing 737 uttered was circle. Moments
later the jetliner slammed into the ground, investigators said Wednesday,
killing all 50 people on board.
The Moscow-based Interstate Aviation Committee, which investigates plane
crashes across the former Soviet Union, concluded a day earlier that the
crew failed to land at first attempt, began to stall in a steep climb,
then overcompensated -- plunging the plane into a near-vertical dive. The
report was based on the data retrieved from the plane's flight parameters
recorder, which also showed that its engines and other systems were
working fine until the plane hit the ground.
On Wednesday, search teams found a tape of cockpit conversations -- a
crucial piece of evidence that was missing when its container was found
the day before. The recording is expected to shed light upon the motives
behind the series of faulty maneuvers that led to the crash.
Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee, Russia's
main criminal investigative agency conducting its own probe into the
crash, said that recordings of the crew's conversations with the control
tower sounded routine.
The pilot reported that the plane was in a wrong position for the landing
and confirmed getting a traffic controller's command to circle the airport
prior to making a second run. The final word the pilot said before the
crash was 'circle,' Markin said in a statement.
The Tatarstan Airlines plane was flying from Moscow to the central city of
Kazan, 720 kilometers (450 miles) to the east.
Moscow's Interstate Aviation Committee's report concluded that to prepare
the jet for a second try, the crew switched off autopilot and put the
plane's engines on maximum power, raising the plane's nose to an angle of
about 25 degrees. The abrupt move apparently caused the jetliner to lose
speed.
The normal procedure during an aborted landing is to apply near-maximum
power and assume about a 5-to-7 degree nose-up attitude, said Kevin Hiatt,
a former Delta Air Lines chief pilot and president of the Flight Safety
Foundation, a U.S.-based nonprofit.
Twenty-five degrees nose-up is excessive. There's no question about that
whatsoever, Hiatt said. Why they determined they needed to go to that
high an angle will be part of the investigation.
At an altitude of about 700 meters (2,200 feet), the crew then tried to
gain speed in order to avert a stall by putting the nose of the plane
down. The report said the plane then went into a dive of about 75 degrees
and hit the tarmac.
Airplanes can sometimes recover from steep dives but they must be at a
sufficiently high altitude.
The committee said it took only 45 seconds from the moment the crew put
the engines at maximum throttle until the moment the Boeing smashed into
the ground.
Such loss of control accidents are responsible for more deaths than any
other type of plane crash because they are rarely survivable, according to
the Flight Safety Foundation, an industry-supported global aviation safety
nonprofit based in Alexandria, Virginia.
The head of Tartarstan Airlines, Aksan Giniyatullin, said Tuesday that the
plane's two pilots had sufficient experience, ranging from 1,900 to 2,500
hours, but admitted that they apparently had no experience with attempting
a second landing.

Re: [MBZ] [Banned_misfits] My, but I'm one boring driver.

2013-11-19 Thread Gerry Archer
The Senate passed a bill, MAP21, Wednesday that requires all new cars to be
equipped with data recording devices starting in 2015.

Lots of cars already have these so-called event data recorders. Forbes'
Kashmir Hill says: They've been around since 1996, are found in at least 60
million vehicles, and are a feature in 85% of new cars every year. Some
insurance companies, like State Farm and Progressive, offer customers a
reduced rate if they install the recorders. But MAP-21 is the first attempt
to make the technology mandatory.

The bill specifies that only the owner of the vehicle would have access to
the information collected, unless 1) the owner consents otherwise; 2) a
court authorizes another party to view the data; 3) certain specified types
of investigations require the information; or 4) a medical team needs the
information to give proper treatment.
Venture Beat's Sarah Mitroff argues that since so many cars already have
this little black box, the bill is not a big deal-and actually be a good
thing for drivers. She writes, Despite privacy concerns over the bill, it
may end up reducing privacy problems in the long run. It explicitly states
that the owner of the car owns the EDR data, an issue that has been debated
in the past.

As a child during the 1930s I would marvel at the very high seat backs in
the interurban cars that ran from Jeffersonville, In to Louisville, Ky and
return. In a childish way I assumed the seatbacks were high because people
would sleep on that long (25?) mile trip. They were luxurious compared to
the minimal seats in the trolley cars.
The trolley car barn in Louisville was an interesting place for a child;
streetcars constantly coming and going, people transferring to other
trolleys, and occasionally a knife fight in front of the seedy bar across
the street. I never saw the police come to a fight. BIL, who worked
downtown, told me that as soon as one of the knife fighters drew blood;
usually a small wound with a pocket knife; the contestants would go back
inside and start drinking again.

sure about the portable part as it does need to be fastened down
to a concrete slab otherwise you aren't ever going to get

you remember to put the tire/wheel on there very gently. If you
drop it too hard the pin that the balance cone rides on will

[MBZ] OT: Plane crash

2013-11-12 Thread Gerry Archer

From: Kaleb C. Striplin ka...@striplin.net

A Mu2 crashed the other day in the woods near the airport here killing one
our senators son. Have not heard about one crashing in a while. I have
flown a lot on one of them back in the early 90s.
___

Concerns have been raised about safety; there have been 330 fatalities from
MU-2 crashes. As of October 2005, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
has begun a safety evaluation of the aircraft and decided that the aircraft
has met its certification requirements - it is safe when operated by
properly trained pilots who operate properly maintained aircraft. The FAA is
in the process of mandating training specific to the MU-2 as it has in the
past for other aircraft. When such mandated training was required outside of
the U.S. the MU-2 accident record was vastly improved.

Because the MU-2 offers very high performance at a relatively low cost,
some of its operators lack sufficient training and experience for such an
advanced aircraft.

A design feature of the MU-2 is its high cruise speed while having a low
landing speed. This is accomplished by using full-span, double-slotted flaps
on the trailing edge of the wing. These flaps give the MU-2 a wing area
comparable to a Beech King Air in landing configuration while having a wing
area comparable to a light jet while in cruise mode. The full-span flaps
meant that over-wing spoilers were employed instead of conventional
ailerons. These spoilers are highly effective, even when the MU-2 wing is
stalled. Some fatal accidents have occurred because normal engine-out
procedures for light twin aircraft are not effective when flying the MU-2.
The commonly taught procedure of reducing flap following an engine failure
on take off leads to a critical reduction in lift in the MU-2 due to the
highly effective double-slotted flaps. When pilots were taught to retain
take-off flap and to reduce climb rate in the event of an engine failure,
MU-2 accident rates reduced to almost nil.

Since our rolling stock seems to be rolling and the list is slow; here is a

the center compartment that hold the radio, climate control, and ashtray

The only explanation seems to be that the plug and cable have slipped down
inside the center console out of sight.
If anyone on the group has had this happen, I would appreciate knowing where
they found it; right, left, front, back, etc. A flexible grabber might
pull it up if its likely location is known.

The following shows the back of the radio. The plug inserts in 1, 2, 3, and

Re: [MBZ] OT - a mess

2013-11-11 Thread Gerry Archer

We were sort of rich during the 1930s Depression since father had a secure
job.
The result was that my parents and three older working sisters spoiled
their sickly little brother with Christmas and birthday gifts.
I had a Lionel train set, an Erector set, a crystal radio, and a single
cylinder steam engine with a brass boiler that was heated by a 110v coil.
The safety valve was a tapered (lead?) plug on a lever which had a moveable
weight that could vary the pressure in the boiler and the speed of the
piston / flywheel.
Occasionally the safety valve would stick, the piston-flywheel would build
up enough speed to make the steam engine walk around the floor, and when
it came unstuck; hot water and steam would come blasting out of the safety
valve. It's a wonder the brass boiler didn't blow up and/or me and my
friends didn't get burnt by the steam / hot water.
My son now has that little steam engine, but I don't think he has ever ran
it.

Tried to build one plane, a Winnie Mae, but never finished it. put together
a Cox control line plane for son, which his sister promptly dove into the
ground. then built a balsa wood boat designed for the little motor off the
wrecked Cox.

We would fire it up and head it out into the lake by a friends house. The
little boat had a mind of its own. It would go one way for while and then,
for no visible reason, decide to go in another direction.
One day it made a great circle and headed back for the dock pilings. We
thought it was a goner but it sailed through the narrow space between two
pilings and ran out of fuel.
I think my son still has that boat as well as the steam engine and the
Lionel train set.

Built a pushmobile out of crate wood and the axles off a rusted out red
wagon that was very popular with the neighborhoods little girls since they
could drive it with their skirts down, but that's another story.

Electric engine model planes seem to be the currently most popular. This
big subdivision where I live has a model plane airport which I think is
exclusively for electric planes since fuel engine planes could cause fires
if they crashed in this wooded area.
Old friend in Tallahassee built and flew electric model planes equipped with
cameras after he gave up his PPL and 183R due to age. Some of the videos he
took from the plane are remarkable.

My sister had a boyfriend who gave my brother and I his old Cox two
cycle airplanes.

I took the PT-19 with the rubber bands that held it together. My brother
got a Stuka dive bomber.

I flew the PT-19 all the time. Fly it into the ground? Boom! Parts
separate and you just put them back together, maybe break a rubber band at
worst.

My brother was afraid to fly the Stuka, fearing that he might crash and
destroy it.

After he had watched me fly (and crash) the PT-19 for several months I
finally convinced him to let me try and fly the Stuka.

We set it up, get it running, and off it goes into the air with me on the
controls. About a minute into the flight, one of the control lines breaks
and it lives up to it's namesake and dives directly into the ground. The
results were not pretty.

Fortunately, my flying skills were not at fault, since there was nothing I
could do to recover with no controls.

And just to clarify, these were the Cox brand planes that you flew in a
circle with the control lines. Made you dizzy as heck until you got used
to them...

Re: [MBZ] 126 Lower Ball Joints

2013-11-10 Thread Gerry Archer
Okay, if Scott has a very heavy duty vice, a breakover handle, a cheater
pipe that fits the breakover handle, and a local Autozone, he can try the
cheapest way to remove it. Autozone loans the tool free. You pay new price
and they refund when you bring it back.

Don't know if 126s are similar to 123s, but I found that Autozones biggest
ball joint remover would fit over the king pin balljoint(s?) in my 123. I
chucked it in a big, heavy duty vice and used a piece of pipe over a
breakover handle for more leverage. It took a good bit of strength , but
suddenly there was a loud pop and it was out.
Don't remember how new one was installed, but I didn't take it to a shop.
Been about 100K miles with the car and everything is still tight. That was
ten years ago, so description may not be exact.
Gerry
P.S. I let it soak in Rust Eater (Autozone), WD-40, Blaster, and 3 or 4
other
potions over night before removing it, but I don't think that had much
effect.

P.S. #2 Might pay to call A-zone first to be sure they still loan tools.
.

You want to have a Benz shop press in the new ones. Getting the old ones
out involves a BFH and the knuckle on a vise or something that can take
the pounding. A little PB might help, and the hot wrench, but mostly just
the BFH.

joint
but so far it appears not to have moved. The main problem (I think) is
holding the knuckle still while I try to drive the old BJ out. Does

My backup plan is to take the knuckle and the new ball joint to a local

Myrick is a not uncommon name; many here in Florida. It has an interesting
history:

This ancient surname recorded in the spellings of Meyric, Meyrick, Merrick
and the American Myrick, is of Anglo-Welsh origins. The first of which is
Welsh, and derives from Meyric, the Prince of Cardigan, and head of the
North Wales tribe based upon Bodorgan, in the Isle of Anglesey. It is
claimed that the Welsh origin is of Norman descent, being a form of
Maurice, and dating back to King John of England in 1199. The second
origin is Norman, and may be the same source as the first. It derives from
the Old French personal name Maurice introduced into England after the
Conquest of 1066. This name is composed of the Germanic elements meri or
mari, meaning fame, and ric, meaning power. The third possible
origin is Scottish, and as such a locational surname from the place called
Merrick situated near Minigaff in Dumfries and Galloway. This placename is
derived from the Gaelic word meurach meaning a branch or fork of a road
or river. Early examples of the surname recordings include Henrye Merriche
in the Poll Tax rolls of Yorkshire in 1379, David Meyrick of Bodorgan, North
wales in the year 1415 and Richard Merrick, who married Martha Tither in
London in 1610. One of the earliest settlers in the New world was, John
Merrick Esq., who in 1678 was recorded in the parish of St. Andrew's in the
Isle of Barbados, as having 266 acres of land and six servants. The first
recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Meuric de Hope,
which was dated 1272, in the charter rolls known as 'Testa de Neville',
during the reign of King Edward 1st, known as 'The hammer of the Scots',
1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal
taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries,
surnames in every country have continued to develop often leading to
astonishing variants of the original spelling.

[MBZ] BP and Shell 'rigged Brent oil price for a decade',

2013-11-06 Thread Gerry Archer

BP and Shell 'rigged Brent oil price for a decade', traders claim
Oil giants BP and Royal Dutch Shell are accused by traders of manipulating
the Brent crude oil price for more than a decade.

European investigators have said the alleged price-rigging could have had a
'huge impact' on the cost of oil Photo: ALAMY

By Emily Gosden
11:15AM GMT 06 Nov 2013
BP and Royal Dutch Shell have been accused of manipulating the Brent crude
oil price for more than a decade, in allegations filed in a lawsuit in New
York.
The North Sea oil benchmark is used as the basis for trades across the
global commodity markets, affecting the price of thousands of consumer
products from petrol to food.
The class action claim, brought by four traders, was lodged last month in
the wake of the European Commission in May launching an investigation into
alleged price rigging by the companies.
The court filing alleges that the companies - along with Norway's Statoil,
Morgan Stanley, Trafigura, Vitol and others - monopolized the Brent Crude
Oil market and entered into an unlawful combination, agreement, and
conspiracy to fix and restrain trade in, and intentionally manipulate Brent
Crude Oil prices and the prices of Brent Crude oil futures contracts.
It alleges the rigging took place through the companies deliberately
reporting inaccurate, misleading, and false information regarding Brent
Crude Oil prices and transactions to Platts, one of the key price-reporting
agencies.

By providing false or inaccurate information and engaging in false or sham
trading, defendants undermined the entire pricing structure for the Brent
Crude Oil physical and futures markets, it alleges.
The lawsuit does not name Platts as a defendant but alleges that the method
by which Platts collects data to set the price can be easily gamed by
market participants that make false, inaccurate or misleading trades.
It warns: Crude oil is one of the most vital commodities in the world,
serving as the essential product for modern end-use applications varying
from household plastics to transportation.Brent Crude Oil is in high demand
and serves as a benchmark for two-thirds of the world's
internationally-traded crude oil supplies.
In May the EC raided the offices of companies including BP, Shell and
Statoil. It warned that even small distortions of assessed prices may have
a huge impact on the prices of crude oil, refined oil products and biofuels
purchases and sales, potentially harming final consumers.
The US Federal Trade Commission in June launched its own investigation into
the allegations. It is understood the US regulators asked Shell to provide
them with the same information it had provided to European authorities, but
that the Anglo-Dutch giant referred them back to Brussels.

BP and Shell both declined to comment.
Shell's chief executive, Peter Voser, has previously declared that the
company has nothing to hide.

.1 and .2 does not sound like it would make things very soggy.
And, yes, we are not anxious to have snow either. It has been all around
us I think but not here yet.
Had a good Sunday doing yard work. Ran the mower around without the bagger
and mulched a bunch of the leaves. Got the leaf blower out and sucked up a
bunch of the leaves that were in the areas under shrubs etc that could not
be mowed. Drained the rain barrel which had about a 2 inch thick plug of
ice on the top. Etc. Was tired at the end of the day.
Still have things I want to do outside so hope that the weather holds for
a bit more. Want to change the oil and grease the snow blower etc. Most
winters it is used very little but I like to keep it in good shape and
ready to go in case we get a blizzard that buries us. Most of the time I
just shovel the walks and we don't have a big driveway - garage opens onto
the back lane so not a whole lot to clear most of the time.
Would also like to fire up the generator and make sure it runs etc. Always
things to do and some get put off to the next year if it snows too soon.

[MBZ] Fuel Cell Toyota

2013-11-03 Thread Gerry Archer

Toyota has developed a new long-range electric vehicle powered entirely by a
cutting-edge fuel cell. The project represents a dramatic departure from the
goal of developing a mass-produced, effective, battery-driven electric car.
But what does it mean for our future?.snip

At this year's Tokyo Motor Show in late November, Toyota is planning to
unveil a sedan that will be the world's first series-produced fuel-cell car
to be sold on the market. According to Toyota, it will be available for
purchase in 2015.snip

No one can predict whether the fuel cell car will ultimately be the key to
our automotive future. But the competition is certainly impressed by
Toyota's dedication. I have great respect for Toyota, because they think on
a long-term basis and they don't engage in technology hopping, says Herbert
Kohler, head of RD at Daimler.
Daimler has since invested more than ?1 billion ($1.37 billion) in fuel cell
drives, has entered into an RD alliance with Ford and Nissan to bring down
costs and is preparing for possible series production of the
technology..snip

BIL was a Studebaker fan. Had a '46 Studebaker pickup that got 26 mpg with
big tires on the back.
Then he bought a sedan with a little propeller on its pointy grill.
Finally a little four door V-8 hotrod. Dealership closed and he was never
happy with his Fords or Chevys until the GM Saturn. He was still bragging
about his Saturn the year he died.
Gerry

Studebakers weren't so bad. The little Superhawk was a nice car. I knew a
fellow who drove one for a very long time. Black with a white stripe on
the side. V8 and a manual transmission with overdrive.
Quite the little hotrod for its time in the early 60's.
And how about the Avanti?

I had an uncle who drove a really ugly one. 4 door sedan that was somewhat
rounded and sort of a pinky tan colour. But he put a lot of miles on the
silly looking thing.

This must be the season for colonoscopies. I'll be seeing a gastro on
Tuesday and will probably be scheduled then.
About ten years ago he found a polyp and removed it. Had I not had the
colonoscopy then, I most likely wouldn't be here today; having died a
protracted and painful death.

I'm overdue for this one due to having had kidney surgery, but since I
haven't had anymore polyps since the first one was removed, there is reason
to be optimistic.

Gerry

From: Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com

I have to prep starting on Sunday. He said I could wait until Monday
morning, but I am off all that week so I figure I'll start a little bit
ahead so I'm nice and clean inside. I was asking about his ADR percentage,
which he said was in the high teens. He prefaced it by stating that this
measurement can be skewed by patients who don't prep properly or with
enough time, so it's not an absolute when you come to comparing doctors.

In fact, he said that it's not beyond him to start and see that someone
hasn't prepped well and stop the procedure, something he said that other
doctors might not do. He said that he's had more than one patient who he
has told to reschedule the procedure if they're not clean because they
cheated when it came to the prep.

I picked this guy carefully. I wanted someone who had privileges at Tampa
General, the leading teaching hospital in the area. In the part of town I
live in, all the local practitioners go to a smaller suburban hospital
that has a less than stellar reputation. He only schedules two patients
an hour, so I had a good 20 minutes (or more if I wanted it) to speak with
him.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Bilateral Knee Replacement

2013-10-30 Thread Gerry Archer
There are many variables: Skill of surgeon (less trauma), age of patient,
weight of
patient (some surgeons will not do knee/hip replacements on overweight
patients.)

pain threshold of patient, general condition of patient, etc.,etc.

BIL, age 65, in Quarryville, Pa was up and walking the next day after
surgery. He
was an active farmer whose bones and muscles were probably in excellent
condition.

He was very thin.

From: Greg Fiorentino gf...@dslnorthwest.net

That is hard for me to imagine. Just the level of pain meds I have been
on
precludes driving, but even without I don't feel like I have the muscular
capability yet for driving. Perhaps he had some bilateral orthoscopic
instead of total replacement???

My old D.O. had his done together.
Don't know what brand of replacements he got, but he drove to my office a
couple of days after the surgery to pick up his grandsons (my boss was his
son).
He'd closed his office for the whole week and got bored after two days of
recuperation.

I don't know how you would, unless the hose arrangement in the particular
car you're working on was such that you could remove all attachments in
situ from the compressor and attach a flushing system in a fluid-tight
way. Certainly in a 124, for example, there's no way that's going to
work. When I replaced a leaky manifold in the '87 and refilled it two
summers ago, I took the compressor off the car and repeatedly filled it
with mineral spirits, operated the pulley manually, and turned it over
several times to make sure the solvent was distributed well. Then gave it
a final flush with acetone the same way.

2013-10-16 Thread Gerry Archer
It is, but the car is in such good condition inside and out, I figured it
would only add to its value. I've had some significant offers for it,
possibly because it's stick-shift, manual climate control, crank-up windows,
and it's general condition.
Thought about it, but what could I buy to replace it that would be as safe,
reliable, and easy to drive? At 27 mpg road and city the fuel-saving
numbers don't add up if I sold it and bought a late model or new car.

Re: [MBZ] Compressor seized

2013-10-16 Thread Gerry Archer
Back in the R-12 days a buck stepped in front of my Dodge on a foggy night
and broke several A/C lines among other things. At the A/C shop the
mechanic shot something through the condenser that smelled like mineral
spirits and he verified that it was mineral spirits.
I buy quart cans of A/C flushing solvent and pump the contents repeatedly
through all components after installing a new pump; which seems to work
okay, but I've always wondered if much cheaper mineral spirits could be used
in larger quantities when converting from R-134 back to R-12 or one of the
propane-butane mixes.
Also, when cleaning the system that way, do you flush the pump as well, and
if so, how do you get all the solvent out of the pump without removing it
from the car?

Thanks,
Gerry

You really need to get all the old oil out, and do a very good job of
leak repair and vacuum -- R134a produces hydrofluoric acid in the
presence of heat and water, very corrosive. Absolutely dry is a must,
unlike R12 which breaks down less (but not that much less).

The ester or polyol oils used for 134a do not mix with the old mineral
oil at all, with the result that there is a mist of mineral oil suspended
in the gas stream instead of dissolved in it, and that can cause trouble
too.

In a clean system with the correct oil, 134A systems will run as long as
R12 systems.

Got the laptop apart and found that it doesn't have a filter. I'm guessing

[MBZ] Electric motorcycles

2013-10-09 Thread Gerry Archer
Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck made a surprising entrance at the Los
Angeles Police Museum last month when he stealthily zipped into the parking
lot on a souped-up, racing-style, all-electric motorcycle.
An avid motocross racer, Beck parked the bike just yards away from where
retired police cars from the 1930s to 1950s now rest.
It was a striking study in contrasts and a visual of the LAPD's continuing
efforts to upgrade its technology. The department, under Beck's direction,
is now testing two types of electric motorcycles as part of an effort to
increase efficiency, decrease its carbon footprint and ultimately cut costs.
Such electric bikes are already used by a growing number of police
departments across the country, from New York to Oregon, and around the
world, including in Bogota, Colombia and Hong Kong...

There was a used, propane fired steam cleaner about the size of a handtruck
on Ebay for $400 and I was really tempted to order it. Nearly every town
used to have a number of places that did auto steam cleaning. I had it done
several times and never had anything damaged.
If you get a pressure washer nozzle set just strong enough to clean an
engine, and then get it just a little too close to wiring, tubing, and
belts; it will eat the rubber right out and leave the fabric if there is
any.

Gerry

From: clay redgh...@comcast.net

About steam hot - 100c. Much less than flame hot of 400+.

I did not find damage being done to the rubber or plastic parts the steam
contacted. I used it on the vinyl flooring which also did not melt, but
it did blast filth from the crevices. I held the nozzle to the offending
area for extended periods until the crud left. Around 30-45 seconds in
one spot. On the engine area, there was a bunch of metal that took time
to heat up to the point the goobers could slip off. I hit a few wire bits
as well. Steam is less calorie heavy than the engine.

I used one of the big ones when I worked a research contract at a Vet
Science Research Center. It was used to sterilize the area where they
did autopsies on large animals. It did a great job cleaning auto
engines but too much danger of getting burned when cleaning the
underside with the car sitting on the ground.

I looked all over the county for a place that would clean the engine and
underside of the MBs to no avail. Some of the dealers do it but they
only clean the cars they repair.

IMO it does the best possible job on autos.

[MBZ] Four-legged, DARPA-funded, running war robot unveiled (VIDEO)

2013-10-06 Thread Gerry Archer
Developers at Boston Dynamics, an engineering company specializing in
robotics, have released video of an untethered robot capable of standing and
mobilizing on its own.
WildCat is a four-legged outdoor runner capable of rising, turning, and
reaching running speeds up to 16 mph on flat ground.

WildCat is a close cousin to Boston Dynamics' Cheetah, another quadrupedal
robot that was unveiled a year ago, running at speeds over 28 mph on a
treadmill - quicker than world's fastest man Usain Bolt's top speed of 27.78
mph. However, unlike WildCat, Cheetah was connected to a power source.

The runner carries a large - and very loud - motor to operate its four
limbs, though the weight hampers its speed and agility.

Boston Dynamics has not detailed what is next for WildCat, but it is known
to have been developed for military use, as the project is part of the
Maximum Mobility and Manipulation Program funded by the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency, or DARPA.

astronomer gave me a private tour, put the huge telescope through it's paces
(the whole dome rotates very precisely), and explained their current major
project which involved shooting a high powered laser through the telescope
at the moon.
The moon astronauts had left highly reflective multisided spheres on the
moon (I was shown one and allowed to hold it); the telescopes laser beam was
bounced off the spheres, and the returning beam was intercepted at precise
locations within its range. The purpose was in getting very accurate
measurements of distance between the observatory and the places of
interception; something that was probably impossible to do any other way
back then.

Since it was noontime and the nearest restaurant was a long drive, he
invited me to lunch. The only restaurant I've ever been in that was
comparable was a UF cafeteria full of noisy students. Each place setting
had pencils, pens, and a pad. Half of the 20-30 people there were either
writing furiously on their pads or loudly arguing with each other. One
sitting next to me suddenly turned, stuck out his hand, and said, I'm

and immediately went back to his writing.

Re: [MBZ] scooters

2013-10-06 Thread Gerry Archer
So did I, so being a DIYer even at that young age, I bought a half completed
angle iron/wheelbarrow wheel motor scooter without a motor that a local
mechanic had built and then couldn't find a motor for it. I had a gasoline
motor out of an old washing machine, so I mounted it, added pedals and
levers, cranked it up with a pull rope, and headed for the shopping district
in our small town. Got almost to the student hangout and the motor froze.
In a few minutes it cooled enough to start and I roared up to the drug
store since there was no muffler. Some fellow students were intrigued but
most thought it was a riot.
The clutch was engaged by sliding the motor via a pedal which tightened the
drive belt.
There were no brakes, but stopping the motor with a kill switch stopped it
pretty fast anyway.
Why that motor didn't eventually permanently freeze, I'll never know. It
would go about two miles and freeze, cool down, go another two miles,
freeze, and so on. An external pushrod operated the exhaust valve, but the
intake valve was simply spring loaded.

Soon as I got my license and my sister loaned me her car since she couldn't
find tire during war time, I sold the scooter to a younger kid for $25; much
to the displeasure of his mother. Driving the '35 Chevy on tires without
treads is another story.

Gerry

From: Rich Thomas richthomas79td...@constructivity.net
That retro-reflector was developed by a company called Arthur D. Little,
Inc. in Cambridge, MA where I got my first real job (and met my wife!). I
had the pleasure and privilege to work with some of the engineers who
developed it and saw it launched and placed on the Moon. Last I heard it
was still there and working quite nicely some 40+ years on! It consisted
of a bunch of right-angle corner reflectors about 1.5 diameter placed in
a stand that could be set up and aimed at the Earth more or less. It did
provide very accurate measurements, sub-centimeter I think, and was used
to measure perturbations in the orbit, seismic activity, and various other
things the scientists could divine.

There were a few of the reflectors in a case in the lobby, and I think
someone had one of the prototypes in their office. Wonder what happened
to that stuff, the company went out of business a few years back, and a
friend and colleague who attended our wedding was the last president of
the company, sadly. At one time there was a laser/telescope on the roof,
they would go out there and shoot at it just because...

There was also a silk purse in the display that had been made from sow's
ears. They also developed the major contribution to western civilization,
Cap'n Crunch cereal, and a bunch of other really cool stuff.

[MBZ] UPDATE! Front mats for '83 240D

2013-10-06 Thread Gerry Archer

UPDATE: The Ebay mats look pretty close to the color of the
seats/upholstery so I went ahead and ordered them. Price was $181.xx
including shipping in case anyone else wants a set. Many thanks to Chris
who provided a lot of information, and to others who offered info and
suggestions.

Gerry

Neither of those numbers on the build plate, Chris. No numbers besides 123
beginning with 1.
This was a custom ordered 240D picked up in Germany. Would that have
anything to do with the absence of the numbers?

I would call the exterior sheet metal color light brown (probably beige).
The seat and upholstery is a slightly darker shade of light brown; possibly
with a very slight reddish tinge. But to repeat: I'm very poor with
colors. If I can get my old Nikon working, I'll send pictures to the list.
Gerry

From: Chris James c_ja...@gmx.com

Both beige palomino (MB-Tex/Leather/Velour) upholstery was available
on the later W123's. Highly unlikely that you have leather or velour, so
look for code 154 (palomino Tex) or 155 (beige Tex) on the radiator
cross member build plate.

Since some of the premiums being quoted currently by health insurance

well established model that would bring premiums down. This is currently

We have an '83 240D.
Otherwise, try the manufacturer.
?140D? - I like it.

It's only a 140D when I hit the wrong key.
A 140D would be slow but might get fantastic MPG.

anyone i deal with has anything to say about floor mats

Buy cocomats.

*That may be what's in there now on the passengers side, Dimitri; coarse
brown material.

Drivers side probably wore out and was discarded.

Re: [MBZ] Adventure of the day

Where did you get the steamer, Clay? My pressure washer is a PIA with all
the water flying around, and it doesn't do a very good job anyway.

Thanks,
Gerry

#1 boy finally decided that he would show some interest in his car. We
had been working on making the car functional enough to pass state
inspection so it could be registered. Got that out of the way and he
slacked off. With the W140 on the road, he wants to put some shine to it.

Anyway, he drags me out to see what is making the grease spots on the
street where he parks. From the top it looks like nothing, but I get him
to put it on ramps and take off the covers. It is a pit under there and
the belly pans are loaded with asphalt and crud. Gave the pans a good
scrubbing and they are ten pound lighter.

We scraped the crap off the underside of the engine. Soaked it with
citrus degreaser. No matter how much we dosed it, the stuff kept flowing
off black and thick. Wire brush to the cruddy parts with thick coating
and found aged cosmoline or some yellowed coating. Brake cleaner cut the
mounds of gunk on top of the sub frames. Boy got it off ramps and drove
it in the rain. When he got back there was lots of oily drips all over
the place. Looks like there is a good leak going on.

Door locks and other vac stuff is not working. I got tired of dealing
with the kid whining about oil and gunk getting in his hair, so I told him
to work on the vac lines. I have no idea if the pump actually works, but
he got happy playing with my vac tester and making the door locks work.
We will have to figure out the rest of that mystery when he has another
day off.

I spent the afternoon with the steam machine blasting away at the built up
snot on the oil pan and the rest of the stuff under there. It was flowing
and plopping all over, and the crust was disappearing to the point that
what was once black was beginning to look about 150k miles newer. I
finally got it clean enough that any new black drips will be very obvious
and I will be able to see any real leaks. And the underside is all shiny
and pretty. Even found that the suspension may have been replaced within
the last 12k miles. All the bolts, once cleaned, were looking like new.
I can see that this 300SE could be a sweet ride for show and shine. Now I
am going to have to spend a number of hours with the steamer getting
Frosch ready
