We currently run an Azure environment. I’ve got a bunch of data scientists running their own environment in our tenant and they’re spinning stuff up daily. I’ve pointed out that every time they spin up a new instance of something the meter is running, but they don’t seem to care. Not sure who’s handling the accounting side of their stuff, but this just started a month or two ago, so I’m guessing they haven’t gotten the first invoice from Microsoft yet.-DOn Jun 18, 2021, at 10:43 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote:Cap-ex vs Op-ex. Re: [MBZ] Engine number

2021-06-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It does. Most won’t even acknowledge the existence of the VMI. Mine won’t let
owners see it, and if a service writer catches you with one they freak out. I
know because I showed one to a service writer for the now Okie E320 CDI to
check for the sunroof recall and they freaked out. “Where did you get this?
You’re not supposed to have this!!” Blah, blah blah.

I told the guy that I had been a commercial customer of theirs before he was
born. Right then the GM walked by and said “Hi!” to me. That pretty much shut
him down.

Hee.

Re: [MBZ] Becker radio codes

2021-06-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The guy at the parts counter is probably looking up the VMI on his computer by
searching the radio serial number field, I presume. Never asked if it’s
searchable by the different fields in the document - I’ll ask next time I’m
over there. It may also be searchable by the build sheet in the EPC, possibly.
Still easiest way to get it is with the last 8 of the VIN.

It’s a “Day-Date” 40 in white gold, a somewhat plebeian Rolex that is nice but

Re: [MBZ] Becker radio codes

2021-06-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Uh, yes it does. The code is in the VMI which is referenced by the VIN. You
give the dealer the VIN, they look up the VMI, which has the factory supplied
radio code in it.

That goes back well into the 1980s.

I’ve pasted a screen shot below of the VMI for my former 1990 350SDL’s VMI with
the radio code and serial number in it. As my posts with attachments typically
get stripped, it probably won’t show up, but I”m more than willing to forward
it to anyone who questions this.

Re: [MBZ] OT OK this just really p1$$e$ me off to no end

2021-06-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Local Frod dealer does this in their “$25 quicky oil change lane. When I used
to have a couple of Focii in the stable I would take them there for oil
changes, as it was cheaper than the local oil change place, and I knew the
materials would be better quality. A couple of times they went through the hard
core upsell thing until I told them I was a former NIASE certified mechanic
that didn’t currently have a place to the do the work myself. After that I just
got the, “Hey, looks like you’ve got a worn belt, want us to change it?” and we
were good. And I had them do some minor work, as I didn’t have time or a place
to do it then.

I agree, however, it’s clear they prey on various types of people to get work
into the shop.

Richarde pops up on the Vet’s list every once in a while. You could always call
Shane, his watch guy in Toronto. He would gladly speak to you and give
recommendations, and who better since he makes a living fixing high end
timepieces. No email or Internet, he’s totally old school. Phone or snail mail
only.

If you want his contact information let me know. Nice guy, easy to speak with,
definitely a subject matter expert many times over. Did a heck of a job on a
rebuild for a Rolex I have that I no longer wear.

Re: [MBZ] OT proud papa

2021-06-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Wife’s breast surgeon, a self-professed “boob guy”, is into fishing and Jeeps.
Like many doctors, he has the mechanical agility of a small child. He would
come into the exam room with his hand/fingers bandaged up on a regular basis,
the result of him “changing the oil in the Jeep last weekend.”

Her reconstructive surgeon, who works directly with this guy and socializes
with him, often pondered to us as to why he would risk damaging his hands since
they’re how he makes a living…

That’s why I stopped wearing watches, even before cellphones became common. I
tended to bang them up.

I like the Apple watch for the health and fitness tracking features, but not
enough to wear one.

2021-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Exactly. But they have been known to show up in person if you dodge them. I
worked for a guy who failed to pay his employee’s withholding taxes for some
time, and regularly dodged the collection calls. One day (after I had left his
employ) a GSA car rolls up, two IRS employees get out, walk in, tell everyone
to leave after which they padlocked the doors and posted an order of attachment.

“Vishing” is the practice of calling someone and claiming to be someone you’re
not to get money out of them, such as posing as an IRS agent and threatening
the recipient with arrest if they don’t whip out their credit card and pay the
“taxes owed”.

“Voice phishing”.

Here is a reference to it in IRS docs:

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/how-to-know-its-really-the-irs-calling-or-knocking-on-your-door

Buddy in the DIA also has something similar that they use when challenged,
often when doing security clearance checks. The old “door to door” thing where
they chat up my neighbors and ask them if you would trust me with the secrets
of the country and if I am doing anything wild or bizarre. With a number of
neighbors who are contractors at MacDill AFB with TS clearances, I get them

2021-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I just ask them for their HSPD-12 ID information.

U.S. Government employees, such as with the IRS or other agencies are provided
an HSPD-12 upon employment for verification of their employment. On the HSPD-12
is a number you can call to give the information on the HSPD-12 to and get a
confirmation that the person is a real U.S. Government employee.

They typically don’t have any idea of what I’m talking about so they hang up.

Re: [MBZ] Issue......Online Parts Vendor www.mercedesgenuineparts.com !

2021-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Bob,

Glad you were able to work things out.

For reference, all of those pretty but consistent looking web sites you see out
there for Mercedes parts are nothing more than a web “front end” that Mercedes
offers to it’s dealers for online parts sales call “Revolution Parts”, often
abbreviated as “RevParts”. Each dealer has to maintain the inventory offered on
their respective instance as well as determining the pricing model to use as
well. Because the domains they use for these sites don’t necessarily tie back
to the dealer who is hosting it, it can be difficult to determine who is
actually behind it.

Re: [MBZ] Maybe I do need to sell mine

2021-06-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Andrew,

When you get an email notification from BaT, it’s got metadata embedded in the
link that identifies you and your connection with BaT so that when it’s clicked
on they know it was you who “clicked back”.

If you click on a BaT link that you got in an email notification from them,
there’s a bunch of additional metadata on the end of the link. Click on one and
look at the address field in your browser.

Open another browser window or tab, and navigate directly to BaT and search for
the auction they sent you the link for. Once you get there, look at the address
in the browser window now.

A lot shorter, eh?

This is how they gather metrics to see how effective an email campaign is, or
what auctions are getting the most attention from members, for example.

Just another way that Big Brother is looking over your shoulder.

Re: [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 Air Conditioner issue

2021-06-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
If it’s the pressure switch you would need to evacuate the system, replace the
switch, pull a vacuum and charge. Do you have the tools necessary to do these
things? If not, leave it to your mechanic.

AC work isn’t rocket science, but you have to have the proper tools to do it.
It’s not something you can swag.

Re: [MBZ] My Friends Last Ride

2021-06-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Point well taken. I don’t care what they do when I’m expired, as I’ll be dead.

When we lived in WI and I was traveling a lot, Mrs. Dan had a pact with a
neighbor lady to assist her in moving my body should I expire at home. The plan
was to transport me to Chicago and put me in a hotel at O’Hare, after which she
would call work and ask where I was. The idea being that my life insurance had
something like triple indemnity if I kicked it while traveling for work.

Worth a shot. All I could think of was the movie S.O.B. If you haven’t seen it
that won’t mean anything. A great Blake Edwards film. Robert Preston was
awesome in that film. "I could sue you for calling me that, Polly! A shyster is

Probably because of miles.

Found a 2002 ML320 on the local FB Marketplace. Has BAS light and the owner

Re: [MBZ] Yesterday was...

2021-06-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is a problem we’ve had in my neighborhood for some years. We have
excellent sidewalks, but the bike riders who choose to ride in the street,
often the “Tour de France” wanna-bes, ride in the middle of the road, won’t
yield, and rarely, if ever, signal or observe signs, like stop signs.

I was driving my 220SEb one day and discovered the fuel pump was starting to
crap out. I was nursing the car home, hoping to make it all the way and not
being terribly attentive (my fault.) A local rider went through a three-way
intersection in front of me without stopping, and I nearly hit him. He
proceeded to yell at me and express his displeasure non-verbally. Pulled up
along side him and asked if he would like to get a ticket for running a stop
sign, to which he said, “I don’t have to stop if I don’t want to.”

It’s this mentality that pits people against idiots like this.

There was a section of a major road in our neighborhood that was three lanes
wide, marked as a two lane road with very wide lanes. Local bike advocates
bitched constantly to the local government about how dangerous it was because
of speeding cars along this stretch. They actually got the County to put in a
center median to close down the road to two regular width lanes, which no
longer accommodate bikers. Along with this they went around the whole
neighborhood and put down these green reflective “bike lane” markers on the
road, despite the roads all being standard two lane widths. not sure what
that’s supposed to accomplish.

To put a cherry on top of these improvements, a couple of months after the
center median was put in a speeding car wrecked along this stretch of road,
running into a tree and killing the driver. They also hit a bicyclist when they
wrecked, having to airlift them to the local trauma center for their injuries.

So much for that bright idea, eh?

As a former cross country cyclist when I lived in WI, like trips of 20-50 miles
a day, I have nothing but respect for other users of the road and did my best
to comply with the rules and regulations. That being said, I truly believe
there are idiots out there driving cars who purposely brush riders back or
attempt to sideswipe them on purpose.

Inefficient because in low ambient situations they fall back onto resistive

Re: [MBZ] OT: Water heater

2021-06-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Interestingly, I did some research only to find out that the industry has
established a standard (CTA-2045) for the connectivity of water heaters,
boilers, etc., but initial research shows that control of such devices doesn’t
suggest that the investment is worth the effort. I found a bunch of
presentations and papers on it from a couple of utilities who did studies using
it a few years ago, and the outcomes weren’t that great.

A.O. Smith had a deal with Lowe’s starting back in 2014 with a platform called
“Iris” for connectivity to such devices, and it’s dead. There’s a third party
that’s running with the CTA-2045 specification who has an app available but
there doesn’t seem to be many manufacturers on board with it. You can drop $220
to get a communications module and interface, but there’s not a lot of
documentation on what exactly you can do with it.

I’m not a big believer in IOT devices mainly because their security often
stinks. I’ve used them from time to time, but I wouldn’t go to a lot of effort
to deploy any on my home environment.

2021-06-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have one similar to it that I bought from Advance Auto. It’s really great for
filling differentials as you can screw it on the top of the bottle and just
pump away. Takes a bot of time, but does the job well and with minimal mess.

I used to use one of those oil “sucker” things to do it and it was always a
mess. This method is far superior.

Mine isn’t “smart” in that it’s an IOT device, no. It does have a socket for
some sort of module for a utility to “talk” to it to make it shut off or turn
it down, however. I never investigated those functions as my utility doesn’t
offer them. Maybe if one got one of the modules you could do that, I don’t know.

Mine does have “vacation” settings that you can do though the front panel. It
will also come out of certain settings after a predetermined time as well, but
I don’t recall the details. I would have to go back and read through the
documentation.

A hybrid water heater uses a heat pump, just like you would have on a house, to
extract heat from the surrounding atmosphere and use it to heat the water. Very
efficient compared to a resistive heating element.

My hybrid water heater costs about $150-$200/year to operate, if that. Compare
that to a similarly sized heater with resistive elements that will cost 2x-3x
that.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Water heater

2021-06-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would research this heavily, as one of the things I saw when I was looking
into them was complaints from people in northern climes who mistakenly
installed these in unheated areas of the house that ultimately discovered they
were horribly inefficient if the ambient air temps dropped below a certain
point. They have heating elements like a conventional heater, too, which kick
in if it can’t get enough heat out of the heat pump section.

You can look at the various review sites as well as reviews for them on Lowe’s
and Home Despot’s web sites for more information.

They do a great job with decent ambient air temperature. Understand that both
of mine have been in the garage, where today it’s easily 90+ if not more. My
hot water costs dropped easily in half when I changed from a conventional water
heater to a hybrid one in my last house. I’ve got one in my “new” house, too.
With your rebate that’s a heck of a deal.

Either that or just carry them in as you suggested. I’ve done that on a couple

True. Up to 2003 or possibly later you can do the towing thing with some
aftermarket bits that are relatively inexpensive - I did it with the 2002 I
had, and it’s easy, took me all of maybe 20 minutes to install everything.

I like the trailer idea, too. Thanks!

I did. A 2002 ML500 that was a beater bought for beater stuff. It had some
bizarre gremlins that I was never able to get sorted, but it did what I wanted
during my ownership and I sold it at break-even, so I’m not at all unhappy with
the experience.

Other than the gremlins, it was a good car/truck. Mileage sucked, but it’s a
truck, so that wasn’t unexpected.

I may be going nuts, but I’m seriously considering adding an ML to the stable

2000 MY or later, a 320 would be preferred but I would go larger if it was a

I’ve seen a few in my neighborhood but they’ve had issues, like peeling
clearcoat or poor maintenance. I could go as late as a 2005 most likely.

And what’s with an ML that has 4Matic? Don’t they all have AWD anyway? What

While I don’t have a huge affinity for British sports cars, I’ve always thought
that the Triumph TR3 would be a cool car to have. It somewhat resembles the
bug-eyed Sprite.

I was doing some work at Wallops Island for the nearby Naval Surface Weapons
facility, and a guy I worked with there had a TR3 completely disassembled for
restoration in his garage. He had gotten bored with the project and asked me if
I wanted it for $3k. I went so far as to inspect it and check everything out,
which was well catalogued and sorted (he was an engineer) but I couldn’t figure
out a way to get everything back to WI for a reasonable price or minimal effort.

Oh well…

The ML500 isn’t a bad ride if you don’t mind the clearly truck-like aspect of

prepare for a visit to the chiropractor afterwards.

If I have to source a vehicle for a future home in Flagstaff I may very well
consider an ML. It would be ideal for the area, and stand out amongst all the

Re: [MBZ] OT insurance, full coverage or no?

2021-05-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m in absolute agreement with you. My point was as my Dad always said when we
were school aged people:

“Your “job” as it were is to focus on your studies and become educated.”

We had to work for spending money, but things that weren’t easily attainable
working no more than 20 hours a week at minimum wage were either provided to us
or subsidized in some manner. The point being is that it’s easy for a young
person to lose focus on what’s important at that time in life and go off the
rails, for example, work too much in order to generate money and let education
slip. That was not acceptable in my household, as everyone was expected to have
their nose in the books and be a successful student.

Providing funding for essential needs, like car insurance, doesn’t derail or
redirect someone’s performance. Not only that, making sure there is an
understanding of the significance of such benefits has value as well. And no
one gets a free ride - that assistance comes with strings attached, such as
responsibilities around the house.

While in principle I agree with you, as when one is paying for something out of
their own money it suddenly has value, it’s not realistic in places like
Florida where a teenage driver’s insurance can be several thousand dollars a
year. That and I don’t want my kids having to work their bottoms off trying to
pay bills when they need to be focused on learning and getting good grades.
Once they get out in the workforce or leave home, certainly, they can assume

focused on learning.

Re: [MBZ] OT insurance, full coverage or no?

2021-05-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is a loaded question. More importantly, what’s your level of comfort with
the risk of having to replace a $5,000 car on short notice? And what’s the
difference in cost between full coverage and minimal coverage?

I carry collision on both of our cars because the difference would take 3-4
years to recoup. For that I would rather spend the money up front and transfer
the risk to the insurance company. I can afford to lay out $5k on a “new” car
on short notice, if necessary, but if it’s only costing me a few hundred
dollars a year for full coverage, it will take a long time to use up that $5k.

Re: [MBZ] Just so you know, I’m not out trying to buy ever car I can find like normal.

2021-05-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Exactly. It’s like the old trope of putting a new set of tires, a tune-up and
other maintenance items and expecting to add that to the value of the vehicle.
It simply doesn’t work that way.

Andrew, I’m not picking on you, but the “extensive body work” doesn’t translate
into significant added value. The condition of the car does, and that certainly
reflects the added value the bodywork brings to it, but attempting to recoup a
significant amount of the cost is usually a futile effort unless it’s something
substantial such as a major restoration on a concours-quality car.

Best thing to do in my opinion is to test the waters with a submission to a
good online auction site like Cars and Bids and see what the response is.
They’ll have far more insight into the market and the value of the car relative
to it and any of us ever will, and again, it costs you nothing but the time it
takes to prepare everything, which you’re going to have to do anyway if you
expect to net top dollar out of the car.

Re: [MBZ] Just so you know, I’m not out trying to buy ever car I can find like normal.

2021-05-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Agreed. I doubt it’s a BaT candidate because of the miles. Cars and Bids is a
possibility, but I’m doubting they’ll give you a $10k reserve. Without knowing
more about it and seeing extensive pictures, it’s tough to say, but the miles
are going to be your biggest detriment. One thing that could potentially offset
that is service records.

Put your information together along with lots of detailed pictures and submit
it to C Worst case scenario is they turn you down, it doesn’t cost anything
to try. The more effort you make to market it the more likely you are to get at
or near your price.

What’s your ask, Andrew? You’ve been tap dancing around this for a while. Let’s
hear what your expectations are and see if they’re realistic.
